The sta are very commi ed to providing a high level of educa on and care for the students and make an amazing e ort everyday to ensure that all the experiences of school and learning are maintained. Thank you for all your support and pa ence in these challenging mes as we all endeavour to keep keep each other safe and healthy. Hopefully the informa on shared last week does make it somewhat easier for families in rela on to the a endance of children at school.

Whole School Ini a ves
At Infant Jesus School, we are con nually asking children to do their personal best. Excellence is a core value that mo vates children to expect great things of themselves and of each other. Alan McLean in his book “Mo va ng Every Learner” (2011) states that “mo va on is the glue that holds everything together, the hub around which most school developments can be considered. It’s a way of thinking that needs to permeate the whole school about the power of mo va on in the classroom and about the core condi ons for e ec ve teaching and learning. It is both pupil and teacher mo va on. It resonates with, supports and wraps around many current ini a ves and so is a unifying focus to schools and authori es.”
Infant Jesus School Whole School Ini a ves Each year ini a ves are implemented to support children and their learning. One of these ini a ves, i-Succeed, con nues to focus on quality student learning and the teaching that enables it to support improvement and enable children to be successful learners. Parents will be very familiar with some aspects of the i-Succeed ini a ve including •
learning inten ons that are shared every week for each year level. This assists in strengthening the partnership and collabora on between home and school as both teachers and parents work together to support the children each week.
•
the learning environment where spaces, displays and resources created by the teachers support and engage children to work successfully in various areas of the classroom and enable them to independently access resources to assist with tasks. Aspects of the learning environment are also changed to support the focus of the learning. Our digital resources have enabled parents to ‘see’ into the classrooms throughout the term.
•
integra on where knowledge and skills from various learning areas have been included within a task. Children are supported to successfully select relevant informa on to enable the problem to be solved or the ques on to be answered. Gradually the children become more successful in linking all the learning.
•
the digital por olio (PP – Year 6 for 2022) where the learning progress of the children can be viewed more o en throughout the year. By the end of this term some of this por olio will be available for
The purpose of educa on is to prepare people for a meaningful life. At Infant Jesus School, our goal is to develop a learning community which fosters lifelong learning and an a tude which promotes achievement of full poten al in an environment embedded in our Gospel values.

At Infant Jesus School, we believe that: • Children are competent and bring a wealth of experiences and knowledge to the learning task. • Learning is a life-long process. • Our community fosters an a tude which promotes achievement of the full poten al of all individuals in an environment embedded in our Gospel Values. • Children work independently and collabora vely on their individual learning journey. • Learning is individualised. Each person is supported to take risks and develop an a tude of responsibility for their own learning. • Mo vated students make the classroom more engaging and inspire them to #ExpectGreatThings.

We o en view the season of Lent as an opportunity to give up a food that we tend to eat frequently or to fast between meals. But the true and original meaning of Lent, is to put ourselves in the place of Jesus. He spent forty days in the desert without any source of food. He was tempted on several occasions. He gave his own life for the forgiveness of our sins. The purpose of these forty days leading up to the resurrec on, is to challenge ourselves. To give up or commit ourselves to something other than the usual. As we are not yet halfway through Lent there is me to re ect on the selec ons we have made. We might have selected a speci c task for Lent as these 40 days are an opportunity to make others happy and to share God’s love with those around us. We could try cheering up anyone that we no ce who looks or sounds like they are feeling down. Making others happy can help spread happiness and gratefulness and impact the lives of others much more that we might know. In doing this we also help to share more about our faith and the meaning of the Season of Lent. During Lent we could also spend more me together and be humble for the gi s that we were all given as together we pray, share and give thanks for each other. Lent is a me where we can all show each other kindness and hospitality. Jesus gave us this example and we can all help others and to make them feel welcome. Lent is a me to follow the example of Jesus more closely, to strengthen rela onships, to walk with others, to be kinder and to be more grateful for all the blessings that we have received.
Some Lenten ideas for this week • Be kind - let someone else go rst • Be grateful – say thank you • Be kind – share with others • Be grateful – give everyone in your family a hug • Be kind – clean up without being asked • Be grateful – be observant of others and give a compliment • Be kind – smile – others will probably smile back
COVID update Very High Caseload Se ngs Last week the Minister for Health, Hon AmberJade Sanderson and the Minister for Educa on and Training, Hon. Sue Ellery, announced that WA was to transi on to the very high caseload se ng for COVID-19 management. These new protocols are based on the latest health advice and mean that more students will be able to keep a ending school in a way that e ec vely manages the risk of COVID-19 as cases approach their peak. Under the new tes ng and isola on protocols speci c se ngs apply to schools. This includes the ability for some asymptoma c close contacts to return to school to work or study. If your child is unwell they should not a end school and if anyone in your household displays any of the COVID-19 symptoms they should seek tes ng immediately and follow the public health requirements.
Self-Repor ng RAT & PCR Results – New Online Form It is vitally important that parents and caregivers inform the school if their child tests posi ve for COVID-19. To support our planning for your child’s a endance, please con nue to no fy the Infant Jesus School if your child returns a nega ve PCR/ RAT result, a er: Being iden ed as a close contact (Day 1 test to return to school as an asymptoma c close contact), and/or Being iden ed as a household close contact (Day6/7 test to conclude quaran ne) To help streamline this process a COVID-19 Selfreporting Form for Students and Staff members has been developed by Catholic Educa on WA (CEWA). Parents and caregivers can now inform the school of their child’s posi ve or nega ve COVID result via this LINK. The informa on will go directly to the Principal, promp ng our COVID response. The link is also available on the Infant Jesus School website h ps://www.infantjesus.wa.edu.au/coronaviruscovid-19/ Please do not underes mate the importance of informing Infant Jesus School of a posi ve COVID case. Your ac ons will ensure the risk to others is minimised and that we do our very best to limit the spread of the virus across our community.
A endance All children are required to a end school unless they are unwell or have immunocompromised health condi ons.

Sta , students and parents are not to a end school if they are unwell (symptoma c) or test posi ve to COVID-19, un l permi ed under public health requirements.
Normal processes for advising the school of a child’s absence will apply for any parent who keeps their unwell child at home. I provide every assurance that your child’s wellbeing, health and safety at school remains our highest priority at Infant Jesus School.
Parent-teacher interviews Parents and the broader community play a vital role in suppor ng successful learning outcomes for our children. Research tells us that the most meaningful partnerships are those where schools, parents, students and the community work together to focus on student learning. Parent and community engagement that is e ec vely focused on student learning can deliver powerful outcomes. Parents are encouraged to play an ac ve role in the educa on of their children and the ParentTeacher interviews in Week 9 are an ideal forum in which to discuss the children/s progress so far this year and also help enrich the learning opportuni es for students by building partnerships between home and school. This year, due to COVID-19 and the government restric ons in place for schools all ‘mee ngs’ will take place via a call. Bookings are only made via PTO.
NAPLAN 2022 NAPLAN (Na onal Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essen al for every child to progress through school and life. Next term, across Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 par cipate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, wri ng,
conven ons of language (spelling, grammar and punctua on) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the me of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and repor ng process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, educa on authori es and governments with informa on about how educa on programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important educa onal outcomes in literacy and numeracy. More informa on about NAPLAN Online for parents and carers will be distributed to families this week and can be accessed using the following link h ps://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/naplan-informa on-brochure-forparents-and-carers.pdf
Kindergarten 2023 – Applica ons are Now Due Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023. Families with children eligible for Kindergarten in 2023 (born from July 2018 to June 2019) are required to ll out an Infant Jesus School Applica on Form. Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.
Pre-Kindergarten 2022 This week the Pre-Kindergarten children commenced the whole day program. This program will be in place for the remainder of the school year. It is a very exci ng me for all these children and the Pre-Kindy sta , Mrs Limerick and Mrs Boogaard. The half-day program con nues unchanged and takes place each Thursday morning. For any further informa on please contact Cheryl at the school o ce on 92761769.

When asked “what do you want most for your kids in life?” most parents answer “to be happy”. While much of what has in uenced kids’ mental health and happiness in recent years is outside the realm of in uence, their
long-term happiness is something you can cul vate by implemen ng and teaching happiness habits and prac ces. Following is an important selec on of these represented them by the acronym FLOURISH. Flow Flow is the experience where kids lose all sense of me. When in ow they’re beau fully engaged in their ac vity, an experience o en described as being ‘in the zone’. If ow is to be experienced, children and young people need to have an appropriate level of skill to rise to the challenge at hand. When the balance is just right ow feels wonderfully sa sfying and produces happiness. Laughter and play Laughter makes kids happier while at the same me helps them breathe more deeply, calming their nervous system and reducing stress. Research shows that the number of mes kids laugh each day reduces as they get older. The same applies to play. You can change that by crea ng ample opportuni es for both. Games like Pic onary and Pie Face ck both boxes! Op mism Op mis c thinking can be taught and has been shown to reduce the likelihood of depression. A great strategy to teach kids relates to 3 Ps- personal, pervasiveness and permanence. When things go wrong help your kids to understand that what happened is not personal, pervasive (a tendency to spread) or permanent. Unite for family meals This is a game changer! More family meals together equate to be er grades, fewer depressive symptoms, less adolescent smoking and less drinking of alcohol among kids. Family meals also bring families closer, strengthening rela onships which are at the heart of lifelong happiness. Rela onships Having more friends and good rela onships is a strong predictor of happiness in childhood and beyond. You can help boost your kids’ social networks by opening your home to their friends and encouraging your kids to spend me with friends from a variety of social circles. Connec ng in-person and online helps bolster kids’ friendships. Intensive exercise Kids need at least an hour a day of exercise, preferably outside and including high intensity fun. Exercise promotes the produc on of ‘feel-good’ chemicals which boost happiness and helps reduce the stress response. Help your kids make connec ons between the ac vity they do and how good they feel during and a erwards to encourage exercise for life. Self-regula on Kids’ ability to self-regulate is an important piece of the happiness puzzle. Their ability to delay gra ca on predicts their ability to cope be er with frustra on and stress. Help your kids build self-regula on skills in a variety of life domains including ea ng and drinking, sleep, play, screen- me, homework and catching up with friends.

Helping others
Being kind makes kids happy and you can nurture kindness in your kids through what you do. Genuine compliments, handwri en notes of thanks, saying good morning to a stranger or even picking up li er are all acts of kindness you can role model. Kids are said to close their ears to advice but open their eyes to example. It’s comfor ng to know that there is a lot you can do to promote a sense of happiness in children and young people. The FLOURISH acronym is a reminder of a powerful framework you can use to boost your kids’ wellbeing and content over the long-term. Paren ng Ideas - Dr Jodi Richardson
Prayer Recognising and celebra ng St Patrick and some Irish tradi ons and customs in Australia takes place today – 17 March, which is the feast of St Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints. He died on March 17 in or around the year 493. St Patrick worked as a missionary in Ireland and it is believed that he used the shamrock, a small plant that grows in Ireland to describe the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
St Patrick’s Prayer Christ be with me. Christ be beside me. Christ be before me. Christ be behind me. Christ at my right hand. Christ at my le hand. Christ me with me everywhere I go. Christ be my friend, for ever and ever. Amen. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy in the week ahead, Clare Mo at

Sound Waves Sound of the Week! Week 8 - d/dd d/dd is most frequently represented by the grapheme d (e.g. dog, garden, head). The grapheme dd for is seen in the middle of words, a er short vowel sounds (e.g. paddle, ladder). The su x ed can represent (e.g. called), (e.g. helped) or (e.g. wanted).
Week 9 - i i is used at the start and in the middle of words, but never at the end of words (e.g. it, quick). The grapheme y can represent (e.g. syrup, myth). Words containing y for i usually originate from Greek. The grapheme o in the word women is an unusual way to represent i . The grapheme i is an unusual way to represent i (e.g. pre y, English).

Students may wear their sports uniform with something orange on Monday 21 March to celebrate our cultural diversity and the theme of ‘Everyone Belongs’, encourages everyone to experience, explore and appreciate WA's wealth of cultural, religious, linguis c and ethnic diversity.
St Patrick’s Day! Thank you to all those families that purchased a green jelly cup for St Patrick’s Day. We raised a total of $145.10 which will be donated to Lismore Parish Flood appeal. Thank you to everyone who supported this fantas c fundraiser.
Chris an Service Ministry! Today, the Chris an Service Ministry assisted with the delivery of the Jelly to the classrooms. In the previous ministry mee ngs, the students discussed ways we could be innova ve in the current climate. During Lent, students at Infant Jesus School would o en sell various items to raise money to support Caritas and various other Catholic Organisa ons. To engage the school community, raise money and provide delicious treats, the Chris an Service Ministry created IJ Eats. Today the IJ Eats students provided contactless delivery of jelly to the classrooms. Students pre-ordered their jelly cups and enjoyed them at recess.

Saint Patrick was born in England, but was captured as a teenager by Irish pirates. He was taken to Ireland as a slave. A er six years, Patrick escaped and returned to England where his family was s ll living.
Saint Patrick became a priest, and he traveled back to Ireland as a missionary so that he could teach the people about God. One day, Saint Patrick compared the Trinity to a shamrock. He said that the shamrock has three leaves, but it is only one plant. In the same way, God is three persons— Father, Son, and Holy Spirit —but one God.
Level Two Restric ons at Infant Jesus Parish Infant Jesus parish con nues to support and to comply with both WA Government and Archdiocese of Perth direc ves. Our parish is large and the weekend Mass a endances usually exceed that 150 limit. Mass a endance is rst in best dressed basis. As the limit applies to both in the Church and outside the Church, it will not be possible for anyone to stay outside once the limit is reached. Please also be aware of the following: • The use of hand sani ser is strongly encouraged. The use of contact registers and masks are a condi on of entry. Masks are required for children from Year Three, and older. If you are feeling unwell, or have u-like symptoms or fever or have been in contact with a person/s suspected to have or who have been diagnosed with COVID 19, please do not a end church/parish centre. • Entry to the church is through the le hand door (marked “Entry”) and exit through the right hand door (marked “Exit”) before and during Mass. Exit is also permi ed through the double glass doors at the conclusion of Mass. • Appropriate physical distancing must be observed between people of di erent households. Signs will, again, be placed on the ends of pews to inform everyone of this requirement. • Frequent cleaning / disinfec ng of the church and parish centre will be carried out by parish sta .
Project Compassion- Second Week of Lent This week through Project Compassion we learn about Biru who lives in a rural village in India’s east. He lost mobility in one of his legs, a er contrac ng polio as a child. Biru worked as a shepherd, looking a er other people’s ca le, to support his wife and four daughters. Keeping up with the ca le was a challenge. Biru taught himself how to repair bicycles by watching other people, but he never dreamed of using those skills to start his own business. With your generous support, Biru was able to access an entrepreneurship and livelihoods training program, run by Caritas Australia’s partner, Caritas India. He gained the support and skills he needed to start his own bicycle repair business. Now, Biru earns enough money to support his family.

We have had a busy few weeks in Year One, learning all about family structure. We looked at the di erent roles carried out by family members and what tasks members in our own families do around the house. Turns out, some of us are great at doing chores to help our parents at home. During Art, we created a Kandinsky-inspired family tree! This needed a lot of focus on our use of line, shape and colour. We loved crea ng these so much that we then went on to making a family branch, where all our family members can hang out!

Code of Conduct at Infant Jesus School The person of each individual human being, in his or her material and spiritual needs, is at the heart of Christ’s teaching: that is why the promo on of the human person is the goal of the Catholic school. The Child Safe Framework and the Code of Conduct are clearly linked as both focus on the safety and well-being of our children. At Infant Jesus School the purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The Code applies to sta , students, volunteers, parents and guardians and all who come to our school. The term ‘parents’ includes guardians. Infant Jesus School has a Code of Conduct in place, and as parents, you sign this and agree to this. All sta are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct. Conduct Statement 3: You act in accordance with the values of the Gospel as de ned in the Code of Ethical Conduct.

Commonsense Media As children grow older, their circle of in uence expands, and they may come home asking to download, watch or read things that you have not heard about. Addi onally, the digital world is so fast paced, what was suitable for kids to access one day, may have a se ng change the next day that means it is no longer suitable for children under 12.
