From the Principal Dear Parents Tomorrow we celebrate Infant Jesus Day. This is a me of great excitement for the children who have been eagerly an cipa ng this day since the beginning of the year. We are looking forward to families joining us from 11.30am when we gather at Infant Jesus Church for a Eucharis c Celebra on.

This year the theme for Infant Jesus Day, ‘Faith in the Future’, recognises our beginnings, our journey and the charisms and tradi ons that support and inspire us in our ongoing mission. Our vision of ‘A LEADing Learning School’ provides the inspira on for where we want to be as a Catholic school today and in the future.

History of Infant Jesus School Our Beginnings and Our Journey

First Holy Communion

Infant Jesus School was established in 1954 by the Dominican Sisters to support the Catholic families in the Parish and to provide a quality Catholic Educa on for the community. The rst School was opened on a site in Walter Road and was called St Paul’s. The school opened with an enrolment of 22 children. The two teachers in charge of the school were Sr Joseph and Sr Dominic.

Book Week

The Dominican Order – Mo o “Veritas” (Truth) Dominic Guzman founded the Dominican Order in Southern France between 1206 and 1216. Now referred to as ‘The Dominican Family’, the order comprises Friars, Sisters, Nuns, Dominican Lay men and women, the Dominican Youth Movement, Dominican Volunteer Movement and countless other groups who lay claim to the charism of preaching the gospel.

The Dominican Mission, which we proudly inherit, is to study, explore and discover be er, ever more e ec ve and newer ways to disseminate the Gospel message of Truth.

The logo of the school up un l the late 80’s was that of the Dominican order because of their close involvement in the teaching sta of the school. Black reminds us that self-discipline and penance are a necessary part of Chris an life. White is the symbol of innocence inspiring us not to sin. Veritas sums up the whole idea of the mo o – Truth.

The Carmelites – Faith – Carmelite Gathering Place The rule of life given to the Carmelites by St. Albert Avogadro between the years 1206 – 1214, was nally approved in 1247.

The Carmelite Rule states that it is basic for a Carmelite to “live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ. To live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ, the Carmelites bind themselves especially to: developing the contempla ve dimension of their life, in an open dialogue with God praying together or alone several Ames a day doing manual work, as Paul the Apostle did living as brothers in poverty, placing in common what li le they may have loving the Church and all people – Celebrate the Eucharist every day conforming their will to that of God, seeking the will of God in faith, in dialogue and through their ac ons.

In the Carmelite tradi on, coming from the inspira on of St. John of the Cross, the goal of life is seen as the ascent of Mount Carmel which is the place of union with Christ in faith, in hope and in love.

The Carmelite logo has the theme of the cross as the centre of the universe. The cross is in a central posi on beneath the stars of the Southern Cross. The circles behind the cross represent the sun, the earth and the moon. The cross stands on a semi-circular mountain which is Mount Carmel.

The core value of love underpins all the Dominican and Carmelite values. At Infant Jesus School we recognise the importance of Jesus’ greatest commandment to ‘love one another.’

In 1956 the Carmelite Fathers took over the parish. By the end of 1960 the school in Walter Road had become too small and was unsuitable as children were now enrolled in the school from Year 1 to Year 7. Late in 1960 a four-acre block was purchased at the corner of Smith and Russell Streets and a new building was built at a cost of 14500 pounds. The new school had four classrooms and was built in plain white bricks.

On Infant Jesus Day we re ect on all those who have been part of our Infant Jesus family. We pray that their me here has helped them to grow into God centred and Jesus focused people who, as lifelong learners, make a di erence to our world. Above all this, we con nue to put our faith and trust in Jesus as the cornerstone of the community we strive to build.

Today, we are very fortunate to have quite remarkable school facili es. Our students and sta are very fortunate and blessed to be educated and work in a school like Infant Jesus.

We give thanks on Infant Jesus Day to all those who have gone before us and contributed in some way to make Infant Jesus School what it is today.

With Jesus as our guide and with God’s love, we hope, trust and have ‘Faith in the Future.’

Last week the Year Four children received the Eucharist for the rst me. It was fantas c to see families and extended family members join the children at this very special me.

We are very grateful to our Parish Priest, Fr Greg, who has been very involved in the prepara on and visited the children at school and at the retreat. The First Eucharist

Celebra ons were led by Fr Greg and Fr John and were very prayerful and memorable for the children and the families.

As a school, and during this term Miss Myles and the Year Four teachers, Miss Leesa Hermans and Miss Jade Rotondo, worked very collabora vely the Parish Sacramental Team, led by Theresa Choo and assisted by Sue Goodwin, to ensure that the Sacramental Program is Family Focused, Parish Based and School Supported.

Father’s Day Fathers bring unique strengths to their rela onships with children and, children with both a mother and father, can bene t from more caring, as well as a variety of caring styles. For example, dads have a more rough and tumble approach to physical interac on in which they challenge their children to explore their own strength and their ability to do new things. Their play introduces healthy compe on and demands respect for limits and boundaries.

There is an agreement amongst psychologists that children with secure a achments to their father have an increased chance to be happy, successful and well-adjusted as children, adolescents and during their progress into adulthood.

Furthermore: • Dads are more likely than mothers to provide problem-solving competencies and independence in children. Father-involved children are more con dent and successful in solving complex mathema cal and logical puzzles.

• Dads help curb violence in boys by teaching and modelling to them socially acceptable ways to express their masculinity.

• Dads who have a warm involvement with their children in their early years, help raise children who become empathe c and compassionate adults. Girls with involved fathers are happier, more con dent and willing to try new things than girls without that father’s involvement.

• Children who felt similar to, admired and wanted to resemble their dads are strong in personal moral judgement, moral values and respec ng rules.

Dads who live with their children and are ac vely involved with them, have high levels of good health and high levels of self esteem.

There is no doubt that every child has a longing to be held and loved by a father- gure and to be mentored through to their adult life by a father who is there for them.

To celebrate our dads and thank them for all the special things they do for us, we will be holding a ‘Donuts with Dad’ morning next Thursday 2 September at 7:30am followed by a whole school mass at the parish.

Performing Arts Fes val Today the Infant Jesus School Choir represented Infant Jesus School in the Primary Choral Singing sec on of the Catholic Performing Arts Fes val.

They performed with great enthusiasm and demonstrated both excellence and crea vity during their presenta on.

They have a busy week as they will also be leading the singing at the Eucharis c Celebra on tomorrow.

Special thanks to Mrs Carroll for her energy and commitment in preparing the School Choir over many, many weeks.

Book Week Congratula ons to all students (and parents) for their e orts with Book Week yesterday. A special ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Jenny Houwen for all her work in organising and co-ordina ng every aspect of Book Week. It takes a considerable amount of me and much crea vity to prepare all the compe ons and to make it so enjoyable for the children. It is an event the community look forward to every year.

The Library has been ‘the place to be’ with children trying solve all the compe ons and nding out the answers yesterday. Yesterday it was wonderful to see all our children and sta dressed as a Book Character!

Tomorrow the Library will s ll be ‘buzzing’ as the Book Fair will be open a er lunch on Infant Jesus Day.

2021 Safeguarding Sunday The Catholic Church in Australia will mark Safeguarding Sunday on September 12 this year. This has previously been known as Child Protec on Sunday, but the Bishops Conference approved the change of name late last year to be er re ect the Church’s policies and protocols to protect and support children and adults at risk.

The Perth Archdiocese will con nue to celebrate Na onal Child Protec on Week from September 5 – 12 2021 and will acknowledge the Sunday of this week as Safeguarding Sunday to align with other Catholic Dioceses in Australia.

The Safeguarding O ce is the Perth Catholic Archdiocese abiding commitment to promo ng the safety, welfare, and well being of children and vulnerable adults. The Safeguarding Program is informed by a fundamental belief that children and vulnerable adults have the right to physical and psychological safety at all mes and that the Church, as a Chris an ins tu on, should now and into the future be at the forefront of e orts to make this a reality. Crea ng a safe church is a dynamic process that involves ac ve par cipa on and responsibility by all leaders, clergy, church workers, and the wider church community including parents and families. The Archdiocese is commi ed to making this possible through collabora on, vigilance, and proac ve approaches across legisla on, policies, procedures, and prac ces.

The Safeguarding Program aims to raise awareness of our collec ve responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults within the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth. Pre-Kindergarten Applica ons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Pre-Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022. Families with children eligible for Pre-Kindergarten in 2022 are required to ll out a PreKindergarten Enrolment Applica on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Tuesday and Thursday.

Pre-Kindergarten places are limited, so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

As a father and father-in-law to three young dads, it’s great to see each of the embracing the life-changing nature of fatherhood and becoming fully involved in their children's lives.

I see myself in these young fathers and, and in doing so I’d like to guide them away from making the same fathering mistakes I did. However, knowing that these young dads are loath to take fathering vice from a member of the previous genera on, I'll give the following advice to my younger self instead:

1.Play to your strengths Men generally parent di erently to women based, on their based on their biology. Fathers o en parent in a more ac ve or ac on-oriented way than mothers so games, play and physical ac vity become important parts of a man's paren ng repertoire. Your partner may not always appreciate your more ac ve approach, par cularly if

you play with the kids just before bed me then leave it to her to calm them down.

Prac cal advice: Be yourself but this part about it!

2. Lighten up - don't take yourself too seriously It's easy to get caught up in your own importance, taking yourself and your work too seriously. For many men a bad day at work translates into poor, or at best, distracted experiences when they’re with their families. Consider pu ng a strategy in place, such as exercise, that will help you leave work and the moods it engenders behind.

Prac cal advice: Be present in mind as well as embody when you're with your kids.

3. Have something in common with each child.

It would be wonderful to say that you can always connect with your kids, but family life is not that straigh orward. There'll always be a child who we struggled to connect with or a developmental stage during which a child seems alien to us. In these cases in mes it helps if you share a common interest (such as the love of sport or music) with a child so that you always have something that will bring you together, even though you may not always see eye to eye.

Prac cal advice: Be prepared to take an interest in your child's interests.

4. Take it easy on your son Many dads are tough on their boys and have expecta ons way above their son’s interest and ability levels. It helps to remember that it takes a li le longer for boys to mature. Resist the tempta on to turn every game and every joint ac vity into a lesson and avoid giving advice when all your son wants is some understanding.

Prac cal advice: See the boy as he is now not the future man when we spend me with you 5.Enjoy the outdoors with your daughter The biological nature fathering causes most men to be very protec ve of their daughters. But that doesn't mean you should put your daughter on a pedestal and treat her like a li le princess. Expect a lot from her. Play with her, and get her outside into nature as it will do wonders for her con dence levels.

Prac cal advice: Enjoy spending me with your daughters on a daily basis 6. Be ready for kids to knock you o your pistol Most children in preschool and middle to late primary school years look up to their dads. “My dad is bigger/ be er than your dad” is a type of mantra that’s familiar to many parents. Make the most of it as this Superman Syndrome doesn't last. Young children soon become adolescents and will go on to great lengths to prove that you're Clark Kent a er all. Expect they will stop laughing at your jokes, raising an eyebrow at your well-inten oned advice and even stop being friendly to you in public.

Ouch! It can be hur ul to a man who just wants to be the best dad he can be.

It's a very personal re ec on as each man's experience of fathering is as unique as the children they are raising. I invite you to re ect on your own fathering as well as the contribu on that fathers - whether their own dad or someone else’s - have made to your own life.

7. Give your kids a compass and a map One day your children will become independent of you. Don't worry! You won't be irrelevant, just redundant in a prac cal and managerial sense. There are two things you can do to help your kids safely navigate the world when you're not around. First, help them develop a set of posi ve values including integrity, honesty and respect that will act as their moral compass when they have di cult decisions to make. Second, reveal your personal story over me as this narra ve will become a personal map that will reassure them when life gets tough. It's good to know that they are not in uncharted territory when they nally strike out on their own.

If your child is exhibi=ng COVID-19-like symptoms, according to Government Regula=ons they must return a nega=ve COVID-19 test result before returning to school.

Reinforce Hygiene Messages Children should be told there are simple steps that they can take to help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illness such as influenza. These include: • Wash hands frequently (alcohol-based hand cleaners are useful if soap and water is not easily accessed), especially a*er coughing and sneezing.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a =ssue when coughing or sneezing and dispose of the =ssue in a rubbish bin a*erwards.

• Avoid contact with people who are unwell.

Parent Presenta<on: Cyber- Safety In Term Four, our school will have the pleasure of hos=ng Paul Litherland for a third =me. Paul is a renowned cyber-safety speaker and owner of Surf Online Safe. He will be presen=ng one parent session, to be held on the 10 November at 6.00pm in the Hall (Week Five). Last year parents thoroughly enjoyed this session and acknowledged the great wealth of exper=se shared with them as parents.

Paul will share his experiences as a WA Police Officer in the Technology Crime Inves=ga=on Unit and speak about the need for children and parents to remember the impact of their digital footprint, maintain levels of privacy when using apps and apply methods to remain safe in an online environment.

Paul’s parent presenta=ons will cover a wide range of topics and will last between 1 to 1.5 hours depending on ques=ons. Subjects covered may include: • Cyber Bullying – Legisla=on surrounding this and how it is affec=ng our children.

• Digital Ci=zenship – Where our children are going online, the Apps they are using and the informa=on they are sharing.

• Online Footprint – How easy it is to find children online and what they can do to minimise their risk.

• Social Networking & Networking in general – How the systems work and how to overcome their reach.

• Online Gaming and Website Use – Risks and uses.

• Tips & Tricks – How to keep an eye on your children through so*ware and hardware. Easy instruc=ons on what we can do to keep them safe.

Paul is very much in demand and has been presen=ng to children and parents at a number of schools over the years. Coincidently, Paul’s family are parishioners at the Infant Jesus Parish and Paul’s grandfather helped to build the original Church and school!

Learning Journeys – Parent Teacher Online

Learning Journeys will be held this Term for Kindergarten - Years 6 on 14 September, Monday of Week 9 from 3.30 – 6pm. The interview booking system will go live on the 30 August at 9.00am.

For these interviews we are con=nuing to use the internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher OnLine (PTO). It will save =me for parents, staff and students! Using this system, you will be able to book the interview =mes that suit you best from any internet-connected device. A computer will be available in the library during school hours if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere.

Please access the system as follows: • Click on the following link – hPps://www.infantjesus.wa.edu.au/pto/ • Click “Obtain PIN/Password” and enter your email address. Your PIN will be emailed to you. This will email you your password to access PTO. Please note that the email address is the email address that you have provided as contact details with the school.

• Full instruc=ons are provided to you a*er log in. Please note the following points: • When you log on, the system displays only your own child/children.

Bookings are made for individual parents/guardians, not for couples.

Couples can however log on to the system simultaneously to coordinate bookings. If two parents/guardians wish to aBend a single interview =me slot, one parent/guardian should make the booking then both can aBend.

• You will only see =me slots that are available at the =me you are using the system. As =me slots are booked for teachers, those =me slots are no longer displayed as available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians.

First Communion Last week our Year Four children received the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first =me. This long-awaited day held many treasured memories for our children and their families who helped prepare them throughout the year for this very special occasion. For the children, this day was the first of many mee=ngs with Jesus in the Eucharist.

Receiving Communion: At Communion =me, the priest, acolyte or Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist offers the consecrated host to the person receiving communion, and says, ‘The Body of Christ.’

The communicant responds, ‘Amen.’ Those who are not Catholic may go forward at this =me for a blessing. They indicate this by crossing their arms over their chest. People return to their seat respecSully. This is a =me for people to be in silent prayer giving thanks to God.

St. Rose of Lima When St. Rose of Lima was born in Lima, Peru on April 20, 1586 she was named Isabel de Flores. She received the name Rose when a housemaid, gazing upon her when she was s=ll an infant, remarked: “She’s as lovely as a rose.” Her mother decided that Rose would be her daughter’s name, and later she was given that name at the =me of confirma=on.

As a young girl growing up, Rose began to fast and pray. Her parents denied her permission to enter a convent, and because she decided not to marry, she endured much misunderstanding from her parents and friends. Rose con=nued; however, to remain at home, but she lived a secluded life. To do her share in suppor=ng the family, she did needlework and sold flowers that she grew. When she was twenty years of age, she joined the Third Order of St. Dominic and converted a licle hut in the backyard into a retreat, where she oMen went to pray.

Rose also transformed a room in her parents’ house into a hospital, where she cared for des=tute children and elderly people. During this =me, Dutch pirates invaded Lima’s harbour and defeated the Peruvian fleet and they intended to loot the city and burn the buildings. The women, children and religious of Lima took refuge in the churches and Rose urged them all to pray. When the pirates burst into the church, they were confronted with the terrifying spectacle of a young girl ablaze with light, holding the Blessed Sacrament. They turned away and fled to their ships, which sailed away.

Rose died on August 24, 1617, at the age of thirty-one, and she was canonised by Pope Clement X in 1671.

In Australia, we celebrate St Rose’s Feast Day on August 23 each year.

Class News Year 4 First Eucharist Receiving Jesus for the first 7me is a very special 7me in our lives.

This term in Year Four, we have been preparing ourselves to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. During the special celebra7on the community came together with our families to celebrate and support the students receiving communion for the first 7me.

To prepare us for the Sacrament we read gospel stories like Feeding the five thousand, The Last Supper and the Passover Meal. We also par7cipated in a retreat day to learn more about the Sacrament and reflect personally on what it means to receive our First Holy Communion.

This Sacrament is the beginning of a special journey of a lifelong connec7on and friendship with Jesus.

Year 3

Learning about Malaysia!

In Year Three we have been learning about Australia’s neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea.

We explored some of the cuisines tradiDonal to each country.

We then made Nasi Goreng - a dish which is tradiDonal in Malaysia. The students enjoyed cooking and eaDng the spicy food.

The 800m event The 800m event at Infant Jesus is a compulsory event to all Year 6’s. As this event is now classified at Inter-school as ‘Open’, any Year 5’ student’s who would like to take part in this event and challenge themselves are welcome!

Year 3-6 400m Time Trials Like last year, we will hold Xme trials for the 400m event. The top 8 girls and boys in each Year level will go through to the final held on the day of the FacXon AthleXcs Carnival. These Xme trials will be held on the school oval at 1:20pm.

Science News Science Week The Year One students celebrated Na5onal Science Week (August 14-22) with a Science Explora5on on Friday, August 20. The 2021 Science Week School Theme was ‘Food: Different By Design’. This is an important theme for everyone because food is our fuel for life and we need to sustain that fuel.

Students took up the challenge of helping the canteen grow, harvest and design a menu that contains leRuce. Students rotated between student directed and teacher led interac5ve ac5vi5es, such as researching how to grow leRuce seeds into plants, plan5ng leRuce seeds, drawing a predic5on of how the leRuce will look as it grows, designing an environment for the seeds to be protected and crea5ng a recipe to use our freshly grown ingredients.

There are many budding farmers and cooks in Year One!

Class News Science Science Week 2021 This year for Science Week, we did an Elephant Toothpaste experiment and made sherbet. The children par>cularly enjoyed watching the experiment and just how much it fizzed when the reac>on happened.

The children had lots of fun making and tas>ng the sherbet.

We used 4 teaspoons of icing sugar, a 1/4 of a teaspoon of citric acid, 1/4 of a teaspoon of bi-carb soda and 4 drops of food colouring. Tas>ng the sherbet was an interes>ng experience for many because of the fizziness caused by the bicarb soda!

YouTube Kids YouTube Kids is a kid-targeted version of YouTube that features curated, adsupported TV shows, music, educa<onal videos, and user-created content. It's designed for kids preschool age to age 12 and is available as an app and a website. YouTube Kids allows you to create individual user profiles for each of your kids, so they can each log in and watch videos geared toward their age. One of the best features of YouTube Kids is the <mer, which lets you set a limit (up to an hour) for your kids to play on the app.

To set up parental controls on YouTube Kids, log in with your Google account. Parents can create a personal passcode, which acts as a master key for accessing the app's seJngs, or you can use the random mul<plica<on quiz each <me you want to get in. (The quiz presumably prevents kids from gaining access.) The app allows profiles for up to eight kids, each with its own avatar and individual seJngs, including <me limits and a personal passcode for each kid so they can't access each other's profile.

YouTube Kids doesn't offer content filters. To limit what your kids can view, you can use the parental controls to allow only content you've approved. Otherwise, the app aims to show videos based on the age range you've specified (kids 4 and under see more early learning content while 8- to 12-year-olds see more gaming videos, for example). If there's something you definitely don't want your kids to see, you'll have to block those videos when they come up.

Infant Jesus Soccer Club Recently, the eleven Infant Jesus Soccer teams were playing at our home ground. The weather was beau6ful and our volunteers were serving up tasty treats in the canteen.
