From the Principal Dear Parents We are certainly living in very interes ng mes. Never before has the world, Australia and now Western Australia seen a pandemic that has spread so quickly. For Western Australia 2022 may be a year that we all remember for some me to come. Along with the many changes to assist everyone to keep healthy and safe, children from Year 3 to 6 have had their rst day of wearing a mask at school. Although it is something di erent for the children, they, with your support and their teachers have adapted very well to the WA Premiers announcement that the Department of Health (WA Health) has upgraded the public health and social measures to High Caseload, Level 2 commencing today.

I know that the last 24 hours would have been stressful for you and your child and that you will have had to adjust your personal arrangements in some cases in signi cant ways. However, your child's health safety and wellbeing have been at the forefront of every decision made. I would like to stress that at all mes we have followed WA health advice and acted with in accordance with an abundance of cau on.

Throughout these mes it is important to keep the lines of communica on open and remain calm, posi ve, pa ent and grateful as we navigate each day by ensuring that the children in our care are nurtured and supported to con nue to be mo vated and successful learners in all areas of the curriculum.

Ash Wednesday & Lent During this Season of Lent Pope Francis reminds us that ‘we should never grow red of doing good, for in due me we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all.’ (Gal 6:9-10). As Chris ans we are called to sow goodness our en re lives, but even more so during Lent. The rst fruit “appears in ourselves and our daily lives,” radia ng the light of Christ to the world. Each day we are invited to con nue sowing goodness ‘for the bene t of others’ as we share the Good News.

Yesterday, on Ash Wednesday we commenced our 2022 Lenten journey – a very signi cant me in the Church year. Ashes received on this day connect us as followers of Christ and as people who share the message of the Good News through the ac ons of our lives. These ac ons and words give others an insight into our Christ-centred community of faith.

During the next forty days of the Season of Lent we have the opportunity to focus on an area of our life that needs rebuilding. We can re ect on how we are going, how we can change, how we might be more compassionate, more tolerant, more courageous, more forgiving, more loving, more of everything that was given to us in the person of Jesus and the Good News.

Catholic Learners As a child-focused and Christ-centred community we are called to share our faith in all that we do and to be the Good News for others. As Catholic Learners, during the Season of Lent, we have many opportuni es to learn about and share our faith. We develop a deeper understanding of God’s love for us and how our gi s and talents contribute to Good News that others see in us.

As Catholic Learners at Infant Jesus School we are a welcoming and re ec ve community coming together to live out our faith. We provide an authen c Catholic Educa on for all families and emphasise the development of each child as a unique human being.

The family is the rst and most important in uence in the development of religious faith in the child. Parents who enrol children at our school are asking us to share with them the responsibility of bringing up their children as Chris ans under the guidance of the teachings of the Catholic Church. Kindergarten 2023 – Applica ons are Now Due Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023.

Families with children eligible for Kindergarten in 2023 (born from July 2018 to June 2019) are required to ll out an Infant Jesus School Applica on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

Pre-Kindergarten 2022 Commencing from Week 7 (Tuesday 15 March 2022) the children in Pre-Kindergarten will be a ending a full day program every Tuesday for the remainder of the 2022 school year.

The half-day program con nues unchanged and takes place each Thursday morning.

From my readings Five forgo en skill sets that contribute to student success At a me when we hear a great deal about growth mindsets, good mental health habits and crea ng digitally savvy students, we can easily overlook the skill sets that form the building blocks of long-term school success. These are skill sets that are also easily forgo en when we narrow our focus onto numeracy, literacy, performing arts, STEM and other academic areas.

While all these other mental skills and academic areas are important, the skills I want to focus on here are ones that can be taught, or at the very least drawn out, alongside every other skill when we as parents and teachers know what to look for.

Following are ve skill sets that contribute massively to overall student success and contentedness at school.

1. Friendship skills The ability to get along with others is hugely important for children and teenagers. Those students with a strong set of friendship skills are easy to like, easy to relate to and easy to play with. The skills they possess include knowing how to win and lose well, how to approach others to join in a group and how to lead rather than boss.

2. Organisa onal skills The ability to organise your me, your space, your items and other aspects of your life is a massive plus for any student.

The best way to help children who are organisa onally challenged is to introduce them to systems and processes to help them organise themselves. These processes include the use of visual reminders, anchoring (i.e. linking new behaviours to habitual behaviours) and the mapping out of ac vi es.

3. Op mism skills It may seem strange to see op mism as skill set, but as leading psychologist Professor Mar n Seligman discovered through his research, op mism can be taught. Seligman found that while some children are more inclined by nature to see a glass as half empty than half full, all children are capable of developing an op mis c explanatory style through exposure and direct teaching. The skills of op mism include being aware of self-talk, reframing nega ve events into posi ve events and the prac ce of perspec ve-taking.

4. Coping skills Kids will generally face a number of challenges during the course of their school lives including overcoming the disappointment of not being picked on a team, working their way through di cult learning situa ons and dealing with rejec on. The impact of these challenges will depend on each kid's own spirit, the support they receive and their coping skills. The good news is that coping skills can be taught or, at the very least, encouraged if adults know what to focus on. Coping strategies include parking problems for a while, normalising di cult situa ons and accep ng and moving on. Some kids will use coping strategies quite naturally, while others need parental and teacher input to help them cope with even seemingly minor challenges.

5. Relaxa on skills The ability to relax and get away from it all is vital for the maintenance of mental health, which in turn a ects a student's ability to perform. Many of today's kids live with pressure. That pressure needs to be released through relaxa on and play, otherwise it can lead to anxiety and other mental illnesses. The ability to relax and unwind is paramount to your child's school success. Relaxa on techniques include mindfulness and medita on, par cipa ng in hobbies and enjoying crea ve pursuits.

These skills are part developmental and part environmental. That is, kids will naturally develop many of them as they mature but the skills also need to be nurtured environmentally. They need to be recognised, encouraged, taught and modelled by adults who children and teenagers respect and admire. That makes parents and teachers 'Very Important People' in the process of acquiring them.

Harmony Day! In Australia, Harmony Day is celebrated on 21 March every year. It is a day to celebrate our culturally diverse society. In order for everyone to live peacefully and happily in Australia it is important that everyone feels equal.

We can learn much from our di erences as they make us unique and special. In WA Harmony Week 2022 is from celebrated from 15 – 21 March and Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week.

Tradi onally, orange signi es social communica on and meaningful conversa ons. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

Ash Wednesday begins our forty-day season of Lent that leads to Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we come together like the people of the Old Testament to

remind ourselves that we do not always follow God’s ways and that we need to ask for God’s mercy and forgiveness. Like God’s people in the me of the prophets, we wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, and to have a change of heart, so that we can live in peace and in joy with God and with each other.

This year, in line with the church’s policy of Distribu on of Ashes in Time of Pandemic, the school par cipated in a live stream liturgy before ashes were sprinkled on their heads. Father Greg and some Year Six Leaders broadcast the liturgy from the library into the classes around the school.

Level Two Restric ons at Infant Jesus Parish Infant Jesus parish con nues to support and to comply with both WA Government and Archdiocese of Perth direc ves. Our parish is large and the weekend Mass a endances usually exceed that 150 limit.

So from this weekend- 5th of March, Mass a endance will be a rst in best dressed basis. As the limit applies to both in the Church and outside the Church, it will not be possible for anyone to stay outside once the limit is reached.

Please also be aware of the following: • The use of hand sani ser is strongly encouraged. The use of contact registers and masks are a condi on of entry. Masks are required for children from Year Three, and older. If you are feeling unwell, or have u-like symptoms or fever or have been in contact with a person/s suspected to have or who have been diagnosed with COVID 19, please do not a end church/parish centre.

• Entry to the church is through the le hand door (marked “Entry”) and exit through the right hand door (marked “Exit”) before and during Mass. Exit is also permi ed through the double glass doors at the conclusion of Mass.

• Appropriate physical distancing must be observed between people of di erent households. Signs will, again, be placed on the ends of pews to inform everyone of this requirement.

• Frequent cleaning / disinfec ng of the church and parish centre will be carried out by parish sta .

Project Compassion- First Week of Lent We begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey by learning about Anatercia, a 12-year-old girl living in a small village in southern Mozambique. She began to take on more and more adult responsibili es as her mother has chronic health issues. She did most of the household chores and had to travel up to ve hours every day to collect clean water. Water scarcity also meant that harvests were poor and there was never enough to eat.

With your support, Caritas Australia’s local partner, Caritas Regional Chokwe, was able to help Anatercia’s family to irrigate their farm to improve their food security. They also improved water access for households in the village, delivered sustainable farming training, and provided Anatercia with essen al school supplies.

Anatercia’s health, educa on and quality of life have improved, along with the outlook of her whole community for all future genera ons.

Class News Year 2 A Busy Start to the Year The Year Two children have had a fabulous start to Year Two. We have been using our very own iPads to explore di erent apps such as PicCollage, Cha erkids and Book Creator.

To prepare for Lent, we learnt about Shrove Tuesday and also got to eat pancakes on this special day.

In Art, we have been learning about shape, line and colour, and have already created some exci ng art pieces.

The Infant Jesus Gold Rush In HASS, We have started our Australian Gold Rush unit.

Unfortunately due to COVID restric ons we weren’t able to go to The Perth Mint. So instead, our teachers brought The Perth Mint to us! We began our inquiry into The Gold Rush with a scavenger hunt. We teamed up into groups to learn fun facts about The Perth Mint, The Gold Rush in WA and how we have gold here at Infant Jesus School!

We ended our scavenger hunt on a quest for Gold Nuggets and were rewarded with gold chocolate coins!

Class News Chris an Service Ministry Project Compassion Launch 2022 On Shrove Tuesday, the Chris an Service Ministry par cipated in a virtual Liturgy and talked about what we could do fundraise for Project Compassion.

We were lucky enough to share a morning tea of pancakes together for Shrove Tuesday. We also got to have a live Q&A with Sister Ivy who works with the disadvantaged in Africa, and learn about her life in Mozambique. She taught us what she and others use the Project Compassion dona ons for.

We also learnt more about Project Compassion and that this year’s theme is ‘For All Future Genera ons’. We were very grateful to par cipate in this virtual celebra on and look forward to seeing how the Infant Jesus School Community can help Project Compassion this year.

Microso Teams As part of our students Microso 365 license students in Years 3-6 have access to Microso Teams.

Microso Teams is a collabora ve applica on that allows students and teachers to share content and resources with one another. This applica on also allows students to par cipate in video calls.

To support our students in naviga ng this digital resource, a list of protocols have been developed with teachers and students.

2022 Netball Club Netball Tryouts If your child would like to try out for the Infant Jesus Netball Club, this will be held at Noranda Netball Associa on- at Noranda Spor ng Complex on Tuesday 15th March at 3.30pm.

Children can play in their normal summer school uniform – please remember your hat and a drink bo le.

Keyed Up Music Lessons Keyed Up Music will be teaching guitar, keyboard, violin, woodwind and drum lessons this term during and a er school. Lessons start from $19.80 for a small group lesson and from $24.75 for individual lessons.

Infant Jesus P&F has now registered for a Scheme ID for Containers for Change. You can take your eligible cans, bo les and containers to your nearest recycling centre and our school can earn 10c for every item deposited. Save this Barcode into your phone/device and scan it at the recycling centre to donate your money to Infant Jesus School.
