From the Principal Dear Parents At the beginning of this week we gathered with the Parish to celebrate the Feast of All Saints. It was wonderful to be ‘back’ at Infant Jesus Church for a 9.00am Mass – the last me we joined the Parish was at the beginning of 2020! Gatherings such as these highlight our journey in faith.

On Monday 8 November and Thursday 11 November, the children in Year Three will receive the Sacrament of Penance (Reconcilia on). This is a very signi cant me in their lives and in their faith journey. It is also a very important me for their families, their teachers, the school and the parish community.

The Sacrament of Penance, is a truly special and wonderful gi that the children, and everyone who has received this sacrament, now have the opportunity to par cipate in as o en as they like.

As people, we have probably all experienced periods of ‘unresolved con ict’ at some stage of our life or maybe are aware of it in the life of a friend. A quick look around the world will show us how misery ourishes when di erences are not resolved. Two things are needed for the restora on of any rela onship. The rst is forgiveness. The second is a resolu on to change what ever caused the rela onship to su er in the rst place. This is what happens in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on (or Penance). The rela onship with God is restored to the best it can be at that very moment in me!

Christ showed us how to do this as he dealt with people who were part of his life – the Magdalene’s, the lepers, the blind and even those who were responsible for his death. To elect to follow Christ means that we endeavour to replace “our hearts” with the “heart of Christ”. This enables us to forgive as Christ did and does. This is what St Paul meant when he remembers that each day, he dies a li le so that Christ can live more in him.

Family Mass On Saturday 13 November at 6.00pm our rst Family Mass since the beginning of last year will be celebrated at Infant Jesus Church. This is a me to gather as a community and to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. The choir will be singing at this mass and all families are encouraged to join us for this celebra on.

The e ec ve running of a school requires the generous contribu ons of all sta . Individuals and groups of sta have various talents and gi s that are all vital to the school. One of these groups are the Educa on Assistants and another is the Administra on Sta . Both groups greatly assist the students and the teachers in our school community.

Administra on Sta As the rst point-ofcontact, the o ce sta provide the interface between the school and the public. To keep a school, such as ours, running smoothly much me and e ort is required. The ‘O ce Sta ’ willingly give of themselves each day to ensure the day-to-day opera ons of the school are carried out. On many occasions the ladies in the o ce go beyond their normal du es to assist many di erent groups within the school and parish community.

Among some of the numerous du es they perform, they are the ‘face of the school’ and the rst point of call for all families, especially new families and parents. They are also the ‘emergency centre’ when a child injures themselves in the playground. The o ce sta are impera ve in ensuring communica on between home and school is maintained.

The Educa on Assistants’ role within a school is to support the classroom teacher and the students.

They perform this duty in many ways from taking small group work, to making teaching aids, to cleaning up a er the children, to caring for the individual needs of our students and carrying out school du es. i-Excel On Monday a selec on of students par cipated in an extra curricula i-Excel opportunity promo ng Mathema cs. At the AFG Numero Challenge students showed great sportsmanship, collabora on and fun and our two teams were placed h and seventh.

On Tuesday 9 November the Inaugural Technology Inter-school Challenge will take place at Sacred Heart School in Thornlie. This day will see students, in a senior and a junior team, use their knowledge of coding and robo cs to complete technology challenges based around the theme of the book, Uno’s Garden.

Special thanks to all the sta who have seen the opportuni es and assisted in the ‘training’ to ensure that all children are well-prepared for these experiences.

Whole School Assessments As part of the ongoing focus of improving learning outcomes, children from Pre-Primary to Year 6 will complete literacy and numeracy assessments before the end of the school year. The informa on from these assessments greatly assists with future planning for each year level and provides a ‘whole school picture’ in the areas of literacy and numeracy. This informa on will assist teachers in planning for the future educa onal needs of the students in the school.

School Disco Many thanks to the P&F Execu ve for organising the School Disco last week. There were many very excited children who enjoyed the evening.Special thanks to the small group of parents who helped set up the hall for the disco and those who remained behind to assist with the cleaning up. It was much appreciated.

School Advisory Council Members of the Infant Jesus School Advisory Council provide a service in the Chris an tradi on, serving the school community according to their par cular skills. It is a shared ministry and as such draws upon the collec ve wisdom in its members working together as Chris ans, both to support the ethos of the Catholic school and to provide for the material needs of the school. it is important that School Advisory Council draw their membership from a broad cross sec on of the community.

Best Wishes Today we recognised and thanked Mrs Kerryn McLaughlin for her many contribu ons to Infant Jesus School during the last 27 years.

Kerryn’s family have had an even longer associa on with the school as her children were also students here for many years.

During her me at the school Kerryn has assisted more than 2000 children have come and gone and more than 200 sta (approximately). Kerryn commenced her posi on in 1994 and worked in Pre-Primary before her last role in the rst half of this year in middle and upper primary.

During all this me there has been a consistent approach from Kerryn and all the children, and parents, would know of her willingness to encourage all children to try their best and improve from day to day. Kerryn always demonstrates care, professionalism, pa ence and

school o ce so an appointment can be made with me at a convenient me.

Kerryn also has great ini a ve, is very exible and easily adjusts instruc ons or resources to support the needs of individual children. Children know that in addi on to the focus on learning Kerryn is very caring and kind.

Raising Mighty Boys

Pre-Kindergarten applica ons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence PreKindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022.

Families with children eligible for Pre-Kindergarten in 2022 are required to ll out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Tuesday and Thursday.

Pre-Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

Paren ng Ideas – Michael Grose Understanding what makes boys ck is the key to teaching and raising them. Here are twelve essen als in order to connect with our sons and help raise well-adjusted boys.

Raising and educa ng boys is a hot topic in Australia and other parts of the world. From my experience those adults who do best teaching and raising boys have a signi cant understanding of what makes boys ck.

Here are twelve key understandings that will help you regardless of your gender or family situa on raise well-adjusted boys: 1. You must like them Approval is at the heart of raising boys. Most will walk over hot coals for you if they know you like them. In a sense, this need for approval holds many boys back in school, as they can shut for a teacher who doesn’t like them. If you can feel comfortable with their boisterousness, live with their lack of organisa onal skills, and not be confronted by their in-your-face ways then the chances are that they’ll respond to you.

2. Boys like to blend in Boys are group-oriented by nature. They want to t in. They tend to play group games and form themselves into structured groups.

Boys don’t want to stand out from the crowd. Don’t put them down in front of their friends and understand that they make poor friendship choices rather than be in a group of one.

They’ll generally prefer the wrong friends rather than

no friends at all.

3. They are hierarchical by nature Boys need limits and boundaries as they make them feel safe and secure.

They like to know someone is going to enforce those rules, so don’t be afraid to take the lead with them.

4. Many boys hide behind a mask Some boys wear a mask to protect them from being hurt. The mask can take many guises including; ‘tough nut’, ‘cool dude’ and ‘class clown.’

Refuse to communicate with the mask. Make them feel comfortable, joke with them, even ckle them. Do whatever you can to get behind the mask.

5. Boys are just as sensi ve as girls Despite the fact that research shows that boys are more easily stressed and more fragile than girls parents will ask daughters how they feel more o en than they ask sons. Also when daughters get hurt, parents tend to comfort them more than they comfort sons. Boys are sensi ve you just need to use di erent language to get them to open up than you do with girls. For instance, a boy will more than likely tell you how he feels if you ask him how he thinks about something. Also, he generally needs more me to process his feelings so bedrooms can become their caves that they’ll retreat to when they need the space to work out what’s going in their hearts.

6. Boys are tac le by nature Ever no ced how li le boys are more likely than li le girls to pop new objects in their mouths. That’s because taste and touch are two important ways that they take in the world.

That tac le nature of boys needs to be nurtured, not ignored. One way is to hug them –lots! Boys need to be touched two to three mes as much as girls to release the same amount of oxytocin (a feel-good chemical in the brain) that is released during a hug.

7. Boys learn from experience Many parents know the extreme frustra on that comes from impar ng their wisdom on to their sons, only to see it completely ignored. If you have boys in your life then you need to get used to the fact that boys like to learn many of their life lessons for themselves. Experience, for be er or worse, is a teacher than many boys can relate to.

8. Loyalty is a high-driver Understand that a boy’s loyalty to his friends and family is a key driver and you’ll unlock the key to the male psyche.

They are incredibly in uenced by their peers, which can hold them back, stopping many from ge ng too far ahead of the pack. Loyalty also gets many boys into strife with authority. Call a boy’s sister or friend an insul ng name

and you’re asking for trouble!

There’s no doubt that raising boys tends to be more of a challenge for parents than raising girls.

Understanding and apprecia ng the di erences is a great start. However I think parents who really connect well with boys somehow develop the wisdom to step as well as speak up at the right me, and the smarts to know when to stand back and allow their sons to work things out for themselves.

Paul’s is very much in demand as his ability to share his knowledge and exper se in this area is always very engaging and informa ve. Infant Jesus Na ve Bush Food Garden Some families may have no ced the beginnings of a garden next to the Kindergarten/Pre-Primary parent carpark. This is a na ve bush food garden that has been designed by the Year Six students during their technology lessons.

Students researched, planned and mapped sugges ons for what the garden could look like and contain, and these sugges ons were then used to create the nal garden.

So far a variety of na ve plants including Gulalung (Finger Limes), Bain (Coastal Pig Face), Boobialla ( Na ve Juniper), Western Boobialla (Waterbush) and salt bushes have been planted. More will be planted in the coming weeks.

This garden was created with the assistance of a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant.

Remembrance Day On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 an armis ce was signed that stopped the gh ng in World War I. Since then, and a er World War II, this day of remembrance became known as ‘Remembrance Day’ so we can remember the people who have died in all wars.

We Are Called Sockball A sock ball is a ta ered, misshapen ball made of recycled material like socks, t-shirts and plas c bags, ed together with string and is a popular homemade toy with children in slums around the world.

It’s this kind of ball that a young boy named Jorge Mario Bergoglio kicked around with his friends in the streets of Buenos Aires some 75 years ago. As he eventually rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a priest, an archbishop and a cardinal, Jorge never forgot where he came from, and his love of soccer remained a constant. Today, he is known as Pope Francis, the rst pon from a majority third

world country, and his special connec on with children from the world’s poorest communi es is symbolised by the iconic sockball they all once played with.

These universal links make soccer the most powerful example of Pope Francis’ ini a ve, Sport at the Service of Humanity. The movement was developed in 2015 to promote the values of sport as a vehicle for fraternity. Its core principles are compassion, respect, love, enlightenment, balance, and joy, which should be inherent in all sports, and which inform our service to others.

Above all, sport unites people from all walks of life. No ma er how di erent people are in age, gender, ethnicity, religion, ability and wealth, they can share a common bond through a love of sport. No sport be er captures

this than soccer. The sockball helps students to understand the reality for children who cannot a ord to play with the balls to which we are accustomed in Australia.

This week students at Infant Jesus School brought home a ‘Socktober’ sponsorship card, as during Week 6 they will be par cipa ng in goal shootouts during their class sport lessons using a sockball. These balls will be created by children at our school and will allow students to experience how less fortunate children around the world play.

Catholic Mission would be grateful for any dona ons raised during this event. Dona ons will go towards helping the poor in countries such as Thailand.

Reconcilia on Retreat The students enjoyed spending a day with 24:7 Youth Ministry to learn more about the Sacrament of Reconcilia on.

A variety of games kept the students entertained together with opportuni es for them to re ect on the step they are about to take in their Sacramental journey. The students had a fantas c me mee ng other Infant Jesus Parish children and working with them to deepen their understanding of the Sacrament of Penance. 'The ‘Sin Experiment’ was a highlight, where substances were added together in a visual of Jesus cleansing individuals of their sins when they receive the Sacrament of Penance. ‘ I enjoyed making forgiveness prayer cards and placing them in front of a picture of Jesus.’

The students began by iden fying that a robot is a piece of hardware that follows speci c instruc ons called a ‘code.’ They then created a series of rules to make sure the Sphero was used appropriately and safely in the classroom.

The task was to programme the Sphero to move in the shape of a square, light up and create sound. Each student was really engaged and even experimented with crea ng di erent paths for the Sphero to follow.

AFG Interschool Numero Challenge In Week Four, as an extra-curricular component of i-Excel, some students from Year Six competed in the AFG Interschool Numero Challenge.

In prepara on, students a ended a weekly ‘training’ session to become familiar with skills required for the day. The compe on took place at Embleton Primary School. The students were nervous but also excited to compete against 18 other teams from schools in the Perth metropolitan area.

Numero Club

Sport Fac on Athle cs Carnival On Thursday, 14 October we held our Fac on Athle cs Carnival and what a fantas c day it was! We were back at Dianella Reserve (Inglewood Li le Athle c Centre) and we were blessed with a beau ful spring day. It was wonderful to see all the children trying their best to earn points for their fac on. All the children from PrePrimary to Year Six must be congratulated for their e orts, teamwork and cheering. In the end we had an extremely close nish, and it was Sienna who won the 2021 Fac on Athle cs Carnival by 85 points!!! Congratula ons Sienna.

Class News

On Friday, 29 October our Athle cs squad made up of selected Year Three – Six children represented our school at the CPSSA Interschool Athle cs Carnival. It was a great pleasure to witness the way our children competed against the other schools, but also their sportsmanship on the day. The team showed great pride in their school and should be commended for their e orts. Each child tried their best in their events, with many children taking home place ribbons and achieving personal bests. Well done to all of our athletes.

I would like to thank Mr Colangelo and Mr Haydon for their amazing e ort in marshalling and looking a er our children. Term Four Swimming Training In prepara on for the 2022 swimming program, we will be o ering swimming training for any children in Year 3 to Year 6. We would like to stress these are not lessons and is only open to those children who are competent swimmers: children must be able to swim 100m con nuously.

Days: Every Friday in Term 4, commencing Week 4 Venue: Bayswater Waves Swimming Pool.

Time: 7:20am – 8:00am.

Breakfast: As li le treat for our swimmer’s, breakfast will be provided in the school hall immediately a er swimming.

WA Spor ng Schools Football West Program: Year 3-6 Infant Jesus has been very lucky to have partnered up with Football West to deliver an exci ng four week soccer program for our Year 3-6 children. Richard Changadzo from Football West will lead our students through the program and teach students a variety of technical soccer skills. The students are extremely excited to start and can’t wait for their rst session.

Code of Conduct at Infant Jesus School

The Code applies to sta , students, volunteers, parents and guardians and all who come to our school. The term ‘parents’ includes guardians.

Infant Jesus School has a Code of Conduct in place, and as parents, you sign this and agree to this. Last year our students also wrote their own Code of Conduct. All students are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

The Code of Conduct focuses on the safety and well-being of our children. At Infant Jesus School the purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

Informa on Technology

Screen Time and Children Many people are o en concerned about about children’s ‘screen me’ and if young children are overexposed to smartphones, tablets and laptops? ‘Banning’ these technologies doesn’t work, but instead we need to look at how children use technology, focusing on using it well and carefully and sharing children’s experiences.

1. Set a good example by limi ng your own screen me—put your device down to give your a en on to children when they ask for it. Phones and tablets are more a rac ve to children when they see adults using them all the me. If you can model the importance of giving someone your full a en on and pu ng the phone away to engage in conversa on, that will help children learn to regulate their own technology use.

2. Use the device together—avoid going solo. Encourage young children to share the screen with you or another child (or screencast on a bigger screen). Using technology together or in a way that encourages communica on and collabora on is be er than children passively watching content. Ideally you would have children next to you while they use the technology so you can talk to them and engage in the

3. Teach children to use apps that support crea vity, movement and physical ac vity—show them how to play a favourite song, bust out some dance moves, solve a puzzle, use the magni er or snap images. Ac vi es which promote movement, interac on, learning and decision-making are be er for children’s cogni ve and physical development than watching videos, or playing repe ve games. It is important to teach them to use technology to create and communicate rather than to consume.

4. Break up screen me into short bursts of 10-20 minutes— help children learn to put devices down and do something else a er a short me. Explain to children that it’s not good for their body (par cularly posture and eyesight) to look at a screen for too long. It might help to use a mer or have another favourite ac vity to move on to next.

5. Make sure the technology is safe for children to use—avoid games or media with adver sing, turn on parental controls, check voice-ac vated so ware, take care with internet-connected toys and devices and use other safety strategies to keep children safe from adult content or games that mimic gambling behaviours.

Stay nearby as they play, learn and work with technology and talk to them about what they are doing.

Lastly, parents are best placed to iden fy what is in their child’s interests. If you need 30 mins to cook a nutri ous meal, don’t feel guilty for giving your child a technology ac vity that will allow you to take that me. But remember that you are in control of what the child does when they are using technology— you can put limits on both the nature of the ac vity (eg talking book or playing music) and me they have on the device. As adults we are the driver of children’s experiences with technology and so we need to remember to keep hold of the steering wheel.

Containers for Change Infant Jesus P&F has now registered for a Scheme ID for Containers for Change. You can take your eligible cans, bo les and containers to your nearest recycling centre and our school can earn 10c for every item deposited. Save this Barcode into your phone/device and scan it at the recycling centre to donate your money to Infant Jesus School. We will have a designated Containers For Change bin at our next major event for parents and students to put their empty bo les/cans/juice boxes etc into.

MAD Camp 2022 MAD CAMP 2022 will be held on Friday 25th Sunday 27th March at Point Walter Recrea on Centre.

Community News WA Ballet- The Nutcracker At Infant Jesus School our students are always achieving great things.

One of our students a ends a pre-professional ballet training programme. This student dedicate herself not only to their school work but also to elite ballet training up to 4 days a week.

The spectacular Christmas ballet The Nutcracker returns to Perth this December for a limited season at the stunning His Majesty’s Theatre.

This fan favourite ballet has been thrilling world audiences for over 100 years, and will bring the magic of Christmas to life just in me for the holiday season.
