From the Principal Dear Parents Last week Infant Jesus School was privileged to hosted a very large mee ng for Catholic Educa on Western Australia. There were over 90 a endees including the Execu ve Director of Catholic Educa on WA, Dr Debra Sayce, the CEWA Execu ve Team, Principals and Leadership Teams from this area and beyond.

Feast Of The Assump on

This was a unique opportunity for Infant Jesus School to share with all the a endees including the CEWA Execu ve, Principals and Leadership Teams from many other primary and secondary schools the vision of the school. Throughout the day sta and students adapted easily and assisted in welcoming and sharing the school facili es and learning spaces.

The a endees were impressed with the professionalism and generosity of the sta and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the students that they both observed and interacted with during the day. There were also some very excited Year 6 students who assisted with leading the prayer for this mee ng. It was fantas c to also listen to comments from the Year 6 students who proudly took many CEWA leaders on tour of the school.

Feast of the Assump on Next Monday, 15 August, we will celebrate the feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a special Mass. This feast day celebrates Mary’s Assump on into heaven and the Church has made this a Holy Day of Obliga on.

Mary loved God and always trusted in Him, doing all that God would want of her. Although she became the mother of Jesus, Mary was a simple woman who lived according to the customs and tradi ons of her Jewish faith. On the Feast of the Assump on we remember and celebrate that Mary was taken to heaven body and soul by God. This special privilege was given to her because of her sinless and exemplary life and total trust in God.

Last Monday three Year Six students par cipated in the Speak Up compe on. This event provided these students with an exci ng opportunity to share their public speaking skills with a wide audience and students from a variety of schools.

Infant Jesus School will be undertaking our School Registra on Audit next week. This is an audit that every school completes every 4 - 5 years and is a requirement for each school to maintain their registra on. There is a variety of informa on that we are required to communicate with the school community as part of our compliance expecta ons in Educa on, Community and Stewardship. We do this throughout the year via avenues such as enrolment interviews, the ACM, the newsle er and the school website.

Pre-Kindergarten 2023 Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023. Families with children eligible for Pre-Kindergarten in 2023 are required to ll out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica on Form.

A endance - Children who are three years of age can a end this program.

Program - Full day program every Tuesday half-day program each Thursday morning Pre-Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

Infant Jesus Day This year we celebrate Infant Jesus Day on Friday 26 August 2022. All the children, and families, very much look forward to this day as we recognise, honour and acknowledge the charisms, history, tradi ons and heritage of our school.

In 2022 we con nue to be very grateful and apprecia ve of our past and the all those who have contributed in so many ways to the Christ-centred and child-focused community that was established at Infant Jesus School and con nues today and in the future.

Our faith- lled and vibrant community is evident through all its members; the children, the sta and the parents. As a community we aspire to achieve our shared vision and work together to con nually improve. Our mantra of #ExpectGreatThings is embedded in all we do and we are always endeavouring to develop as lifelong learners through a focus on Exceeding Expecta ons.

This year our Infant Jesus Day celebra ons focus on the saints and charisms of our school. Both Dominican saints – St Dominic, St Catherine, St Thomas and St Rose and Carmelite saints – St Teresa of Avila, St Therese of Lisieux and St John of the Cross shared the gi s that God had given them to model the charisms and be the Good News for all.

Today we con nue to be inspired by the example of these saints and the way that they shared their many gi s. The Dominican saints are re ected very prominently in our school through our fac ons. · St Dominic (Calaroga) through sharing Jesus’ message of Truth through his preaching and life · St Thomas (Aquina) through demonstra ng great faith in God and was an example of the Good News for others.

Today and in the future, children, sta and parents con nue share the charisms of the Dominican and Carmelite saints in our community. We are grateful for their example and are also inspired to con nue to be the message of Jesus, as they did, through our prayer and by sharing God’s love, faith, hope and trust in serving others.

Infant Jesus Day Schedule From 12.00pm families and the community are invite to join us at Infant Jesus Church for a Whole School Mass.

Following the Mass at Infant Jesus Church, the children and parents will walk to school for a Sausage Sizzle lunch.

All Pre-Primary to Year Six children will stay on the Oval where the Sausage Sizzles will be distributed by teachers. Parents need to collect a Sausage Sizzle from the tables in the Piazza and return to the Oval.

Following the Sausage Sizzle the Stalls are open.

Children and families are invited to a range of stalls organised and run by the students. Your generous support of all the stalls will assist Catholic Mission in their work in many countries around the world.

Once stalls conclude children will return to class.

Anniversary of the Dedica on of Infant Jesus Church On Sunday 28 August 2022 Infant Jesus Parish celebrates the Anniversary of the Dedica on of Infant Jesus Church. The celebra on commences with Mass at 9.30am followed by a gala day.

We are very grateful that Infant Jesus Church and the community con nues to provide an invi ng and re ec ve space for our community of faith where we can pray, celebrate, support and connect with others.

First Eucharist Later in the term the Year Four students will receive the Eucharist for the rst me. This week parents a ended a Parent Informa on Evening and this weekend families will a end a Commitment Mass. During the next few weeks, the prepara on will con nue with a visit to the year group from Fr Greg, a Parent and Child workshop, a retreat and reconcilia on before the celebra on on Saturday 10 September 2022.

The Eucharist is a celebra on that leads each person to live, act, hope and dream in the spirit of con nuing the mission of Jesus in love and service to others. The word ‘Eucharist’ comes from the Greek word for ‘giving thanks’; it is an act of giving thanks to God. When people join in the celebra on of the Mass they give thanks to God for all they have been given, especially the gi of Jesus. During the Mass, people remember the words and ac ons of Jesus at the Last Supper.

Every me people go to mass, the gi s of bread and wine are transformed so that Jesus who gives himself for humanity becomes present. Through the bread and wine, Jesus himself gives life to transform his followers, so that they enter into communion with him and all his followers.

In the Eucharist, people draw on God’s power to transform the world. People pray that Jesus will help them to celebrate and live the Eucharist to transform the world into a place where people live as Jesus taught.

Catholic Performing Arts Fes val Today we were provided with a ‘preview’ of the choirs who will be represen ng Infant Jesus School at the 2022 Catholic Performing Arts Fes val.

The Infant Jesus School Choir have been working very hard preparing for their performance on Wednesday 24 August 2022 in the Primary Choral Singing sec on of the fes val.

This year to provide students with addi onal opportuni es to share their gi s and talents all Year Three students are in the Year Three Choir. They have also been very enthusias cally rehearsing for their performance which is also on Wednesday 24 August 2022 in the Primary Choral Singing sec on.

We wish Ms Carroll, Mrs King, the School Choir and the Year Three choir all the very best for their performances.

iShow, iExplain, iLearnt At Infant Jesus our goal is to develop a community which fosters life-long learning and an a tude which promotes achievement of full poten al in an environment embedded in our Gospel values.

It is also a me for the children to re ect and to share their knowledge and skills and how they con nue to #ExpectGreatThings of themselves in all areas of learning. iShow, iExplain, iLearnt is also a me to recognise all the teaching sta , teachers and educa on assistants, who with great care, enthusiasm and exper se cater for the individual needs of every child. This year in addi on to the iShow, iExplain, iLearnt experience in the classrooms children will share their learning in other curriculum areas including Science, Health, Chinese, Physical Educa on and Music.

COVID Update Earlier in the week families were no ed of RATs to be collected from school. Each child receives an alloca on of 20 RATs. This alloca on supports the strategy to keep the school community COVID-19 safe.

Use a RAT to test your child for COVID-19 if they have symptoms or are a household close contact. If your child is a close contact, they are required to a end school, as long as they receive a nega ve daily RAT result, remain asymptoma c, and wear a mask (Year 7 and above).

If your child has COVID-19 symptoms, they should stay home and be tested. 8 con dence-building strategies every parent and teacher should know (Michael Grose – Paren ng Ideas) Ins lling con dence takes more than heaping praise on kids. Here are 8 prac cal con dence-building strategies for parents and teachers of children and young people. Children with healthy self-esteem and selfcon dence learn more, achieve more and are generally happier than those with low con dence levels. Building children’s and young people’s con dence is complex. It’s more than being a praise robot and heaping posi ve comments on a child at the rst sign of them doing something well. Con dence building requires a number of approaches that impact on how they think, how they feel and what they can do.

Here are eight prac cal strategies that you can use to build real selfcon dence in kids of all ages: 1. Model con dent thinking Kids soak up the language, thinking and behaviour of those closest to them in their environment. Parents and teachers, play a part in modelling con dent thinking and behaviour par cularly when it comes to tackling new ac vi es. In par cular, let kids hear posi ve self-talk when you tackle something new. They should hear something like, “I’ll have a go at this. If I don’t do so well then I can try again tomorrow.” This is far more e ec ve than “I’m no good at this. I’ll probably stu it up.”

2. Focus on e ort & improvement Current thinking shows that people who believe that they can increase their intelligence through e ort and challenge actually get smarter and do be er in school, work, and life over me. One way to develop a growth mindset is to focus your language on e ort and improvement rather than on the results of what they do. By linking success with e ort you are teaching them success comes from something other than purely their ability, talents or smarts.

3. Praise strategy While e ort is key for achievement, it's not the only thing. Kids need to try new strategies and seek input from others when they're stuck. They need this repertoire of approaches – not just sheer e ort – to learn and improve. It helps too to focus language on be er and smarter ways on improving. Comments such as “That was a smart idea to tackle the hardest task while you were fresh!”(strategy) and “You recognised the rst few steps were the most important but then a er that you were right” are descrip ve statements that have signi cant instruc onal value for kids.

4. Develop self-help skills from an early age A child’s self-esteem comes as a result of his or her successes and accomplishments. The most important competencies to build con dence are basic self-help skills. These form the building blocks upon which other competencies such as organisa onal skills and many social skills are formed.

5. Give them real responsibility From a young age start giving children responsibility for some aspects of their lives. By giving kids responsibility for many aspects of their lives we are sending a powerful message that we think they are capable. Also they are learning the skills necessary to care for themselves.

7. Expand their horizons Some kids are con dent and capable at home but are fearful and nervous when it comes to new social situa ons and unfamiliar environments.

Children today, have less opportunity than those in the past to nego ate and explore unpredictable situa ons. Wherever possible look for opportuni es to expand children’s horizons to include unfamiliar places and unfamiliar loca ons including catching public transport and walking to friends’ places una ended when capable.

8. Recognise improvement Focus your comments on children’s e ort and improvement rather than on winning the game or ge ng top marks. Help kids set realis c goals in line with their capabili es and interests. Learning ve new spelling words a week maybe more realis c than 20 words that his school may require.

iShow, iExplain, iLearnt (Learning Journeys) Parent Teacher Online iShow, iExplain, iLearnt (Learning Journeys) will be held this Term for Kindergarten - Years 6 on 14 September, Monday of Week 9 from 3.30 – 6.00pm. The interview booking system will go live on the 26 August at 9.00am.

For these interviews we are con nuing to use the internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save me for parents, sta and students! Using this system, you will be able to book the interview mes that suit you best from any internet-connected device. A computer will be available in the library during school hours if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere.

Mary MacKillop is known as ‘Australia’s Saint’ as she is the rst Australian born ci zen that has been canonised.

We celebrated St Mary MacKillop as a school community at our Monday morning assembly.

In Year Six, some students wrote a ballad to celebrate St Mary MacKillop.

She soon started teaching The poor kids in the town A priest told her to keep doing it And not to back down During the me of ‘66 Mary and the priest soon were able to create Australia’s rst orders of nuns They also made a school in a stable MacKillop devoted herself to teaching and to charity She insisted the nuns would live a life of poverty So they could nd their clarity

She died in August 1909 And the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart were sad In 2010 she was canonised And people in Australia were so glad.

Catholic Mission Last week, the Director of Catholic Mission Australia, Ma Poyn ng and WA School Engagement O cer, Miss Judith Nyamuli came to visit the Year Six students to congratulate the school on their fundraising e orts last year. As a school our Socktober fundraiser helped raise money for Catholic Mission to support underprivileged families in Thailand.

Ma and Judith shared stories about missionary work with the children and reminded them of the great gi s they are to each other and to the world. The Year Six students shared the mul ple ac vi es they will undertake to fundraise for Catholic Mission this year during Infant Jesus Day.

Bread, Bread, Bread!

The humble lunchbox sandwich can be made with many di erent bread varie es: wholemeal, sourdough, whole grain, white, mul grain, rye, pita, at breads, crisp breads, naan, english mu ns…

Which bread is best?

Wholegrain

varie es have grains and o en seeds added to the wholemeal ow for extra nutri onal value. Wholegrain breads (including rye and wholegrain sourdough and wholegrain wraps) have up to four mes the bre of white breads and have extra vitamins and minerals. These wholegrain foods, may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes.

They will also keep you fuller for longer.

Be careful with mul -grain breads. It sounds be er for your health, but mul -grain bread is simply white bread with grains added to the loaf. Whilst it is a step up from white bread, try to buy bread that uses wholemeal our so that the bran and wheatgerm is s ll present. You even have to be careful with some packaged wholemeal breads, check the ingredients to make sure it actually contains wholemeal our.

Class News Sport Well, what a busy term it has been for sport. The Athle cs program is in full swing with each year level working extremely hard in trying to improve their personal best mes/distances. It has been amazing watching the dedica on and commitment of our students in striving for their best!

Inter-School Cross Country Carnival On Tuesday 26 July, a group of 48 energe c students ventured to UWA Sports Park to compete in the 2022 Inter-school Cross Country Carnival. The students and parents all had a great view of the amazing runners as they competed in their respec ve events. It was wonderful to see the children trying their best to earn points for Infant Jesus. All the children from Year 3 to 6 must be congratulated for their e orts, teamwork and cheering. The compe on was extremely erce this year and in the end Infant Jesus nished in 9th place, well done everyone!

Class News Year 2 Magni cent Mul plica on This term the Year Two children have been working on their mul plica on skills. To support their learning they have been exploring equal groups of items, repeated addi ons and arrays.

The children had fun searching for arrays in our everyday environment. They enthusias cally found arrays in the classroom, took a photo and circled each group of numbers.

The children then wrote the corresponding repeated addi on and mul plica on sum to match the array. They enjoyed working with their peers to consolidate their mul plica on learning using hands-on materials.

We then inves gated real-life mul plica on problems such as, quickly coun ng and nding the total number of cookies on a tray and legs on animals.

Class News Year 4 It’s Time to Code… Sphero Style!

In Year 4, the students are exploring the world of coding through the use of Spheros. The students were tasked with crea ng an algorithm for the Sphero so that it would move in a square, change colours at each corner and make a sound.

Coding the Sphero to complete all of those tasks was challenging and the students needed to apply their persistence and problem solving skills. They are so proud of their nished results.

Online Safety Issues - Parents Guide Did you know that the E-Safety Commissioner produces a book that covers some of the key online safety issues for young people and includes a range of prac cal ps and advice on what to do if things go wrong? You can also nd a list of important services that can o er extra support if something does occur online or your child comes to you with a di cult topic.

Father and Son Camp 2022 Registra ons Registra ons for this year's Father and Son Camp will open to Year 6 families (only) on Thursday, August 18 at 7am.

Registra ons for the rest of the school (Years 1 to 5) will open the following week, on Thursday, August 25 at 7am.

What you need to know: The camp will be held at Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup from Friday, October 28 to Sunday, October 30. The cost is $300 for families with one child and $350 for families with two children. This will cover all food, accommoda on and ac vi es over the weekend.
