From the Principal Dear Parents Welcome back to the start of Term Four. I hope everyone both parents and children had a very relaxing break and enjoyed the me being out of the rou ne of school. It is hard to believe that Christmas is not that far away – only about nine weeks. This term is always a busy me in schools. Students are encouraged to con nue to work hard and apply themselves to all their learning as their e ort each day assists with the progress that they con nue to make throughout the year. Each day is an opportunity to re ect, to improve as learning is life-long.

Leaders as Learners
The summary of our submission for which we received a Merit Award is ‘To recognise 200 years of Catholic Educa on, Infant Jesus School celebrated with a Liturgy to acknowledge and celebrate Catholic Educa on. We gave thanks for the many opportuni es that Catholic Schools have provided for their sta , students and families. A video re ec on was also created to showcase the way that school has developed since it was established in 1954. In the a ernoon, students par cipated in various ac vi es some of which involved re ec ng on their favourite memories of Infant Jesus School. The students had a lot of fun experiencing how school life has improved and are thankful for the many opportuni es that they receive today.’ The movie that was also included in the submission can be viewed here h ps://youtu.be/ gMNnngJOzRQ
Friday 29 October 2021. Thank you to all of our sta for your work on the morning of the carnival, during the day and a er school. The se ng up early in the morning, scoring, marshalling, packing/unpacking and crowd control was very much appreciated and made for a smooth carnival. Our sta are always very enthusias c and generous with their me in assis ng in so many events throughout the school year – including the Athle c Carnival. Thank you to the Wellness Ministry who had a very busy day organising their team and ensuring that everyone was on me for their races and the games. The Ministry also showed great leadership skills in suppor ng and encouraging every member of their fac on and our younger students in various events. We are also very grateful to the parents who assisted on the day, either marshalling, judging, distribu ng ribbons etc. Without your involvement and support we could not run the carnival. Congratula ons to Siena the winning fac on on the day. The last me Siena were the winners of the Athle c Carnival was over 15 years ago, so it was amazing for the children, especially the Year Six students, that they were able to achieve success in athle cs. Congratula ons also to all the medal winners in each age group.
Athle c Carnival 2021 We congratulate all compe tors for their e orts and their sportsmanship throughout the day last Thursday at the Annual Athle c Carnival.

Thank you also to the P&F Execu ve, par cularly Vanessa Ga and Jenny Allpike, for all their work in organising the food and drinks for the day. Thank you to the many parents who kindly donated all the food and to the parents who assisted with selling all the food and drinks on the day and ckets for the P&F carpark bay.
We keep all our Year Three students in prayers during the next few weeks as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of the Reconcilia on (o cially called the Sacrament of Penance, and also known as Confession) for the rst me. Parents have a ended a Reconcilia on Informa on Evening and Fr Greg has visited the Year Three classes this week. On the weekend families will also be a ending a Commitment Mass. Prepara on to receive this Sacrament also includes a Retreat next week. Children learn that the Sacrament of Penance is a sacrament ins tuted by Jesus Christ in his love and mercy to o er us forgiveness for the mes we have sinned and turned away from God. At the same me, we are reconciled with the Church because it is also wounded by our sins. Every me we sin, we hurt ourselves, other people and God. In Reconcilia on, we acknowledge our sins before God and the Church. We express our sorrow in a meaningful way, receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church, make repara on for what we have done, and resolve to do be er in the future. Our children will receive the Sacrament on either Monday 8 November or Thursday 11 November 2021. The children are guided through the process by Fr Greg and the other assistant priests. All family members are encouraged to come and support their child in receiving the Sacrament of Penance. An invita on is also extended to all families to receive the Sacrament at this me if they wish.

This small addi on involved the installa on of café blinds to create another learning area on the balcony. As this area is now enclosed it provides greater exibility with the workspaces for the upper primary students. The area is also ‘weather proof’ – keeping both the cold and heat out and maintaining the same working condi ons as being in a classroom.
World Teachers Day World Teachers Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate teachers around the globe. In 2021, the celebra ons of World Teachers’ Day, which focused on the theme "Teachers at the heart of educa on recovery". Australia will celebrate and thank the teaching profession on World Teachers’ Day on Friday 29 October 2021. Teachers (with support from parents and carers) have ensured educa on con nues across the country this year, despite major challenges. It’s reinforced the signi cant role teachers play in the lives of children and students, their families, and communi es. In West Australia we have much to be grateful for as teachers and sta have been at school every day this year – except the rst week of the year. We are very fortunate that the delivery of educa on in West Australia has not been impacted as it has in the Eastern States of Australia and around the world. At our school we are also very fortunate that we have very adaptable and mo vated sta who have the exper se to con nually create teaching and learning programs that can be ‘transformed’, within hours, should we need to provide for remote learning.
In the last weeks of Term Three we conducted a parent survey at our Learning Journey night. We received some 260+ responses and these are some of the results as viewed by parents of the school. Of the 260 responses received from parents, the percentage score below represents those parents who rated the school (in percentage terms) at three stars (good), four stars (very good) and ve stars (excellent) in these areas of school performance. Leaders as Learners “The power of collec ve capacity is that it enables ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. – for two reasons. One is that knowledge about e ec ve prac ce becomes more widely available and accessible on a daily basis. The second reason is more powerful s ll – working together generates commitment.” Michael Fullan (McKinsey & Company Report). Each child at Infant Jesus School, is encouraged to be a global ci zen, who understands their ac ons contribute to building their community’s values and prac ces. The children have opportuni es to develop sustainable habits and an apprecia on for our world. Social jus ce is promoted throughout the school and all of the children are encouraged to share their gi s and talents with the community. At Infant Jesus School, we believe in: • A con nual focus on leadership for learning. • Empowering all students to be leaders. • Developing high standards of professional prac ce, and strong instruc onal leadership. • Se ng high expecta ons and promo ng a community of learners who share explicit and ar culated learning goals. • Developing a passion for learning, knowledge of current research and the concept of con nuous improvement. • Developing leaders who are mo vated to inspire and engage others in ar cula ng the shared vision of #ExpectGreatThings.

We are very fortunate that we have very commi ed and enthusias c sta who assist all the students with their learning and re ec on where the students set high individual expecta ons for themselves and con dently work together by sharing ideas and assis ng others in their learning at school and for life now and in the future.
2021 Ini a ves This term the i-Excel ini a ve will provide an extra curricula opportunity for some of our Year Six students to share their gi s and talents. At the beginning of November the small team of students will par cipate in the Numero (mathema cs) Compe on. Throughout last term students were provided with many opportuni es to further develop and apply their mathema cal skills and knowledge through Numero. This opportunity requires the students to work in a team to quickly solve mathema cal problems within the card game. The students have been very commi ed and have spent signi cant amount of me a er school each week to prac ce and re ne their skills. These prac ces have been coordinated by Mr Silla through Numero Club last term. There has also been some ongoing work this term to further enhance their skills in prepara on for the compe on.

Best Wishes Congratula ons to Mrs Julie Merrells who will be commencing a Social Worker posi on at Mary’s Mount Primary School from the beginning of the 2022 school year. This is very exci ng for Julie as she will be establishing the Social Worker posi on for the school. Julie has been a sta member at Infant Jesus School since the beginning of 2019. We have all greatly bene ed from her experience, knowledge, skills and exper se in her work with many children, sta and families. During the last three years Julie has been very commi ed to improvement and has implemented many very e ec ve strategies to assist and support the children and sta . We are all very apprecia ve of her very posi ve, caring, consistent and professional approach. We are also very grateful for Julie’s involvement and work with families in strengthening the links between home and school. The social work service con nues this term as Julie starts her new posi on at the beginning of 2022. We also wish Mrs Jenny Houwen all the very best as she will not be returning to Infant Jesus School in 2022. For the last eleven years Jenny has very e ciently coordinated all aspects the Library including being involved in upda ng the Library space, expanding the selec on of books and resources, organising special events such as the annual Book Week and the Book Fair, and in every day of her work wonderfully promo ng literacy, books and a love of reading for the children, sta and the community. uniform is a major investment by parents, and it is important that ALL clothing should be clearly marked with the child’s name. If parents have di culty with the school uniform, please make an appointment to see Miss Mo at.
School Fees As we are in Term Four and drawing closer to the end of the year we ask that all families please ensure fees are nalised as per the your payment plan. Opportuni es are con nuously provided to all families who are experiencing di cul es to discuss their situa on with me. Some families have acted on this, and I thank them for their sincerity and honesty. If you are experiencing legi mate di cul es in rela on to your school fees, please contact Mrs Irene Baginski at the school o ce so an appointment can be made with me at a convenient me.
Outreach Last term some of the students at Infant Jesus School wrote le ers and made cards which were sent to the Carmelites at Varroville/St Ives in/near Sydney to let them know that we were thinking of them during the me they were in lockdown in the Eastern States. The community/priory were extremely grateful for all the thoughts, le ers and cards and sent all the students at Infant Jesus School a le er of thanks.
We con nue to think of and pray for the health and safety of all those who are separated or su ering from COVID-19 or the challenges of the pandemic.
PreKindergarten applica ons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Pre-Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022. Families with children eligible for PreKindergarten in 2022 are required to ll out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica on Form. Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Tuesday and Thursday. Pre-Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.
From my readings The power of gra tude for a happier life (Paren ng Ideas – Dr Jodi Richardson) More than just a nice feeling, gra tude is integral to happiness. If we can inspire and cul vate gra tude in our children, we’re doing so much more than teaching them to be polite by saying 'thank-you'. We’re helping them develop a strength that will posi vely a ect their mental health and wellbeing over a life me. It’s that powerful.

Remember how many mes you had to remind your kids to use their manners all those years ago?
I know, probably too many! S ll reminding? You're not alone! In the same way good manners eventually become a part of daily life, sincere gra tude will too. It’s worth persevering.
Bene ts of a grateful mindset The science tells us that compared with those who don’t, people who prac ce gra tude are more enthusias c, more determined, perform be er at school, are more likely to avoid risky behaviours, experience less depression and envy, are more kind and helpful, sleep be er and are 25 per cent happier. Adolescents with a grateful mindset are more op mis c and experience greater social support, which is essen al to their health and happiness. They experience more ful lling friendships and family rela onships, are more content in themselves and with their school, have higher grades and are less focused on material possessions. There's simply no down side! Prac cing gra tude is a sure- re way to boost happiness, something we absolutely want for ourselves and for our children. In addi on, teaching our children genuine apprecia on helps them develop strong rela onships over the course
of their lives, and we know that strong rela onships are cri cal to our overall happiness. Gra tude isn't just good for the giver either. It's wonderful for the recipient too. Do you remember how you felt the last me sincere gra tude was expressed to you? It li s our spirits, boosts our mood and inevitably strengthens our rela onship with the person expressing their thanks. Where do I start? The best way to teach gra tude is for us as parents to role model it. When you're feeling grateful, tell your kids and explain why. If you do something kind for someone to thank them for helping you, share your story over the evening meal. Like all values we want for our kids to embrace, it's 'monkey see, monkey do'. Di erent families teach gra tude in di erent ways. The trick is to introduce a gra tude prac ce that doesn’t feel like a chore. Even if there’s a li le resistance at rst, don’t give up. It feels good to be grateful, so it should eventually become something that doesn’t need too much of a nudge. Suppor ng your child to become more grateful begins with teaching three fundamental ideas: 1. Awareness that someone has purposefully done something to bene t them. 2. Awareness that taking ac on to provide you a bene t cost that person in some way. 3. Understanding that the bene t of that person’s ac ons is valuable to them. There are loads of fun ways to prac ce gra tude. Here are a few to get you started: • Regularly express sincere gra tude to your partner and to your children, explaining why. • Prompt your kids to note things they’re grateful for in colourful textas on poster paper on the fridge. • Paint a wall in chalk paint for your family to ar s cally (or not!) express their gra tude using chalk. • Stop to savour and appreciate the li le things like a beau ful ower or a colourful sunset. • Find the silver lining in di cult circumstances. • Hold hands at the dinner table and thank the person who prepared the food. • Ask the kids to take photos of the things they’re grateful for. • Keep thank-you notes at the ready and let the kids know when you write one and why. Encourage them to do the same. • Encourage a contribu on from your kids' pocket money towards something they want. • Start a gra tude journal and invite the kids to make contribu ons. • Encourage your kids to help others. • Help your kids re ect on what they're grateful for, last thing at night. • Start a gra tude jar and each weekend spend me reading over the notes within.

It’s really about nding the right t for your family. You may need to try a few di erent ideas. You don't even have to do it everyday, even just a few mes a week works well, though it is good to get into a rou ne with it.
Knowing this we can also be on the lookout for opportuni es to fan the ames of our childrens' passions and yearnings to make a di erence in the lives of others. Step-by-step, day-by-day, we can raise grateful young people who are happier because of their perspec ve, and who lead rich and ful lling lives because of what they do for others. (Paren ng Ideas – Dr Jodi Richardson)
Prayer At the Eucharis c Celebra on this morning we re ected on the example given to us by St Teresa of Avila. Throughout her life she was very faithful to God and used the gi s that she had been given to ‘be’ Jesus for others. This is also shared in the following prayer a ributed to St Teresa. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses the world. Lastly, Associate Professor Je rey Froh, a leading authority on gra tude in young people, tells us that "the deepest sense of gra tude in life comes from connec ng to a bigger picture, to an issue that ma ers to others, and doing things that contribute to society down the road.”

We Are Called Glorious and Luminous mysteries are re ected on as we pray.
The Rosary The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This coincides with the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on 7 October and was ins tuted to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary in gra tude for the protec on that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful.

The Rosary is a simple, repe ve prayer by which we re ect on the life, death and glori ca on of Christ through the eyes and heart of his mother. The Rosary is one way we can prayerfully contemplate the mysteries of our faith. Joyful, Sorrowful,
Joyful Mysteries At the joyful me in her life an angel, Gabriel, announces to Mary that she is to be the mother of Jesus. Mary then shares this news with her cousin Elizabeth. Jesus is born and then, as a baby, He is presented in the temple. Later, as a twelve-year-old, Jesus shares a special message with the teachers at the temple. Sorrowful Mysteries During the sorrowful part of her life, Mary watched as Jesus prayed in the garden before the soldiers came to take him away. She was there when He was crowned with thorns and led o to die. She saw Jesus does on the cross.
Mysteries of Light (Luminous Mysteries) In October 2002, Pope John Paul II added the Mysteries of Light to the Holy Rosary, calling us to pray the Rosary daily; for our families - and for world peace. Each mystery re ects on some of the important moments in Christ’s life.
All Saints Day Mass On Monday 1 November we celebrate the Feast of All Saints. It is a me when we remember all of those saints now in heaven, both known and unknown and re ect on their lives. Saints are great role models. Saints hold a special posi on within the life of the Church. A saint is someone how has a deep commitment to Christ and the power of God has been experienced through the saint by others in the same way. Such divine power may have been experienced through miracles, inspira onal examples or some extraordinary work. The children are very familiar with some saints as our fac ons are named from the Dominican saints including St Dominic (Calarouga), St Rose (Lima), St Thomas Aquinus (Aquina) and St Catherine (Siena). We are also very familiar with some of the Carmelite Saints including St Therese of the Flower Jesus, St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross. Elements of the tradi ons of the saints from both the Dominican and the Carmelite tradi ons have been included in the print of the Summer Dress. We will join the Parish in giving thanks for all the saints at the Eucharis c Celebra on on Monday 1 November at Infant Jesus Church commencing at 9.00am. When se ng up the age restric ons you can choose based on the age that is most applicable for your children. The op ons are U, PG, 12, 15 and 18. Remember that this is the oldest age ra ng that they will be allowed to watch, so for example picking 12 will allow your child to watch shows and lms rated 12 and below. To do this:
Go to Ne lix.com/account. Scroll to ‘Pro le & Parental Controls ’and click on the pro le you want to manage. Click ‘Change’ next to the Viewing Restric ons se ng. Enter your Ne lix password. Set the maturity ra ng for the programmes and lms you want to allow in that pro le. You have the op ons of U, PG, 12, 15 and 18. Under Title Restric ons, type the name of the tle and click the tle when it appears. You will see a list of restricted tles listed in red. 8. Select Submit. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Set up PIN protected pro les You may have di erent accounts set up for di erent members of your family, but did you know you can prevent other family members from accessing each others’ accounts? When you log into your Ne lix account on a computer, tablet or TV you come to a screen which asks you to select your pro le. Each pro le has its own name, pro le picture and content which is age appropriate to the viewer. In the latest update you will now need to enter a four-number pin code to access each pro le. This can help ensure that only the person who the pro le is set up for can view the content on it, stopping younger children or teenagers from going on their parent’s accounts to view lms or tv shows intended for older audiences. Each pro le will have a di erent pin, and the parent or carer who has created these se ngs can lock or unlock the pro les on your account. To do this: 1. Go to Ne lix.com/account and log in to your Ne lix account. 2. Scroll down to ‘Pro le & Parental Controls’ and click on the arrow next to the name of the pro le you want to lock. 3. Change the Pro le Lock se ng. 4. Enter your Ne lix account password on the screen. 5. Tick the box that says ‘Require a PIN’ to access the selected pro le. (if you need to remove the PIN requirement, un ck the box). 6. Enter four numbers into the PIN eld. This will be your Pro le Lock PIN. 7. Stop children bypassing these se ngs by adding a new pro le to your account without entering a PIN. Select Require PIN to add new pro les. 8. Select Submit.

Disable auto-play Ne lix has a se ng called ‘autoplay’ where once you have nished an episode of a show the next one plays automa cally a er a 10 second countdown. Looking at viewing history By looking at your child’s viewing history you can see what has been viewed on each of the pro les and on which date. This can help you to monitor what shows your child is enjoying, as well as seeing how many shows or movies they are watching each day. This can be a great way of star ng a discussion about the types of things you children like to watch. To do this: 1. Go to Ne lix.com/account. 2. Scroll to Pro le & Parental Controls se ngs. 3. Click on the pro le you want to check the history of. 4. Click ‘Viewing ac vity’. Viewing ac vity will show you all of the tles, and when they were streamed for that pro le. Have an ongoing conversa on Parental controls can be helpful, but they are not a replacement for ongoing discussion and involvement with your child’s online life. Watch shows together, talk about their favourite things to watch and play a part in your child’s decision-making process when they want to start a new series.
