2022 as an

Lexile- Literacy Pro

Comprehension is an essenBal reading skill that allows us to understand the meaning of text, pictures, movies, songs and more. As a way to enhance the comprehension skills of our older students, we have a home reading program- Literacy Pro- that is used in Year 3-6.

Literacy Pro measures each student’s reading ability using a fast, adapBve online test. Children iniBally complete an online test at school which is assessed by the computer-based Lexile analyser. This gives students a reading level from BR (Beginning Reader) to 1500. This is oben referred to as a Lexile reading level or score. It enables teachers to monitor student progress throughout the year and keep track of their comprehension and vocabulary development.

Students are able to choose from a range of books which match their Lexile level in their library Bmes. AddiBonally, there are digital books available online in the Lexile site and your child may even find their favourite book from home has a quiz available. Choosing a book that is at their level ensures that students are challenged but not frustrated by their chosen book. Aber each book is read, students complete a quiz online which consists of 10 quesBons about the book they have just read. Students need to score at least 7/10 quesBons correct in order to pass the book and earn designated points for that book. This quiz is part of the Infant Jesus School homework program. Please note, if your child does not get 7/10 this is not seen as a problem, but rather that the book was too difficult, and they either need to re-read the book, or the program will recalculate their level. CerYficates are handed out during

our Monday morning assembly for those children are passing Lexile levels to congratulate them of their progress.

Our main aim is for the children to read for enjoyment and develop a love for reading. Our students have been progressively taught how to work through the process in their classrooms; however, they may need support with the process unBl they develop confidence and familiarity with the program. It is important that they ask for help as soon as possible. If problems arise please contact your child’s class teacher.

We Are Called

St Dominic

Infant Jesus School was established by the Dominican Sisters in 1954.

The Dominican Order was founded by St Dominic many centuries ago. St Dominic was very faith-filled and was a very engaging preacher and proclaimer who inspired many to join him in sharing Truth and the Good News through their work and prayer life.

Today the Dominican charism of Truth and the example of St Dominic conBnues to inspire all in our school community and many more in Australia and around the world. Our facBon Calaroga is also linked to St Dominic.

Next week, in Australia we will celebrate the Feast of St Dominic on 3 August.

Dear Lord, We are called together as members of the Dominican family to celebrate and acknowledge the giis of one another. As proclaimers we share the Good News in our classrooms, schools, homes and communiYes. Dominic’s light has always shone brightly and it illumines the way to reveal the Dominican pillars of community, prayer, study and service.

May we all be strengthened by the love of Christ and remember our modo – Veritas as we conYnue to search for the Truth in the footsteps of Jesus and St Dominic. Amen.

Year Six

MigraYon Stories

This term in Year Six we are learning about migraBon, and the push/pull effects that cause people to move away from their homeland.

The students have been interviewing a family member or a friend who has moved to Australia. They will use this informaBon to create a digital account of the person’s migraBon story.

This week the Year Six children learnt about forced migraBon and refugees. Aber listening to the story, ‘The Li`le Refugee’ by Anh Do they measured out the dimensions of the boat that Anh’s family escaped on and reflected on how forty people lived on board such a Bny boat.

Year One

100 Days Smarter

From the very first day of Year One, we have been counBng how many days we’ve been in school. This week, we FINALLY reached 100 days! To celebrate, we had a 100 Days party. In Maths, we spent a lot of Bme learning our numbers to 100 and all the different ways we can represent it. Did you know, 100 is made up of ten groups of ten?

We started off our day creaBng bucket lists containing: things we want to see; places we want to go; people we want to be; and the things we want to have by the Bme we turn 100! We also had a gallery walk where we viewed all of the different representaBons of 100 that our friends had brought in from home!

To finish off the celebraBon, we spent the abernoon doing fun STEAM acBviBes and even completed 100 reps of exercise. There were lots of 100 year olds jumping about on the oval for this! We wish we could count all the way to 200 for another fun celebraBon of all our learning!!

FacYon Cross Country Carnival

Last term, students from Years 1 – 6 ventured to Lightning Park for the annual FacBon Cross Country Carnival. The students worked extremely hard throughout the term and were extremely excited to put their running skills on show. Aber cancelling the first date due to bad weather we finally managed a beauBful day for running! The determinaBon, effort and sportsmanship shown was simply amazing. Well done to Lima who were the winning facBon on the day! I would like to thank the children for the effort they showed, the Infant Jesus staff for their support, and the wonderful parent helpers.

The Year 6 Winter Lightning Carnival

Also last term the Year 6 students competed in the annual Winter Lightning Carnival. The Winter Carnival consists of three sports: Netball, Soccer and AFL with shorter games being played in a round-robin format. The purpose of the Winter Carnival is parBcipaBon, no scoring takes place so the students are there to have FUN!. Infant Jesus competed with one AFL, three netball and two soccer teams. The students were extremely excited to compete in their first Winter carnival and the day did not disappoint. The students displayed great leadership and sportsmanship skills as they competed against seven other schools in our CPSSA.

I would like to thank the amazing parents who helped coach and/ or umpire. We had many parents/siblings give up their day to support our Year Six students so for that we say THANK YOU!

Healthy EaBng

Myths Busted!

MYTH: Freshly squeezed juice is a healthy opYon

600ml of freshly squeezed fruit juice has about 16 teaspoons of sugar, which is a similar amount of sugar found in coke! This amount of sugar is well over the recommended amount of sugar per day. How is this so? When you juice fruit, you use a lot more fruit and you squeeze all the sugar into the glass and throw out the fibre- which is the best part that helps our digesBve system. Two pieces of fresh fruit is BEST.

MYTH: Culng out food groups is good for my health

There are so many diets like no sugar, no carbs and no gluten- do any of them actually help the average person stay health and happy? Research shows that restricBve diets can lead to negaBve health outcomes, they are difficult to maintain in the long run and they create social anxiety. Instead of going along with the latest fad diet, focus on eaBng a variety of whole foods from the five core foods groups. It is also important to model healthy and balanced eaBng habits for your kids.

MYTH: Reduced fat dairy has added sugar

Dairy products whether reduced fat or full fat, have similar sugar contents per 100ml. Also, even though the fat has been reduced; this does not mean that the amount of calcium and protein has been reduced. Low fat milk: 4.8g/100ml of sugar, 120mg/100ml of calcium, 3.7g/100ml of protein and 1.3g/100ml of fat Full fat milk: 4.6g/100ml of sugar, 107mg/100ml of calcium, 3.5g/100ml of protein and 3.5g/100ml of fat. *Be careful with flavoured yoghurts or milk because the sugar content can be very high in those products.
