From the Principal Dear Parents Welcome to the beginning of Semester Two 2022. Hopefully families had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday, kept healthy and safe and were able to spend some me together during the break.

First Eucharist

It was fantas c to see children arriving at school last week happy, mo vated, refreshed and ready for an exci ng term of learning. They were excited to catch up with their friends and shared some of their holiday ac vi es which included travelling and visi ng places around WA, in Perth and interstate, going to see the latest movies and spending me with family and friends. Perhaps Mums and Dads were happy too that Term Three had started.

At the end of last term all students from Pre-Primary to Year Six received their Semester One 2022 report online. Hopefully parents have had the chance to share these reports with their children and have congratulated them for their e ort and achievements. Informa on in the report also presents opportuni es to look for areas of development and improvement during the next six months.

First Eucharist We will con nue to communicate with parents using familiar pla orm of Seesaw. It is fantas c that parents can be involved through the communica on that they receive from the teachers about the learning planned for the term and the learning planned each week. Working together strengthens the partnership between home and school and ensures the best outcomes for all the students at our school.

We will endeavour to ensure events can take place and as close as possible to the dates indicated, however, as with all events in the community, the na on and the world we need to con nue to be very adaptable and pa ent.

Next week Infant Jesus School will host a large mee ng where the CEWA Execu ve and CEWA Leaders, and many principals and their leadership teams will be in a endance. This is a wonderful opportunity for the CEWA Execu ve, leaders and colleagues to be able to observe the vision of the school whilst a ending the mee ng.

Last week we gathered as a whole school for a Eucharis c Celebra on in the School Hall which was led by Fr Ferdie and assisted by Brother Ad. Fr Ferdie is currently assis ng Fr Greg and Infant Jesus Parish. This celebra on was a wonderful way to come together as a school community to pray,

This term we are focusing on the Year Four students and their teachers and families as the students prepare to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist for the rst me on Saturday 10 September 2022.

Receiving Jesus for the rst me it is very signi cant occasion. First Holy Communion is a key step in the ini a on of the person into the community of the Church. At this prayerful and memorable me, the parish community celebrates with the family and welcomes the person receiving Communion.

First Holy Communion is the beginning of a special journey of in mate lifelong connec on and friendship with Jesus. Through receiving the Eucharist, we are united in a special way with Jesus, and we are nourished and strengthened to live good lives and become Jesus in the world today.

People live a Eucharis c life welcome Jesus in the world today through their ac ons, words and way of being when they: • show love for others • act with kindness • care for people in need • share with others • look a er God's crea on • choose to do what is right

Earlier this week families of the Year Four children received informa on regarding enrolment. In the coming weeks parents a end an Informa on Evening and parents and children a end a Commitment Mass and a Parent and Child Workshop.

Interschool Cross Country Congratula ons to our Interschool Cross Country Team who par cipated in the compe on last Tuesday at the UWA Sports Park.

Sixteen schools were represented at the carnival this year and our students tried excep onally hard with some achieving be er than their personal best. Overall our school was placed ninth.

Special thanks to Mrs Jenkins, assisted by Miss Witkowski, for all their e ort in preparing the team with addi onal early morning training sessions at Peter’s Place.

Infant Jesus Family Our sincere condolences to the Bingham family (Sophie - Year 2W) on the sad loss of their father and husband, Sean. Sincere condolences are also sent to the Parise family (Cris an- Year 4W and Joshua- Year 6B) on the sad passing of their father and husband, Anthony.

May God’s presence provide them with love and peace at this me.

Welcome We welcome Ms Fei Liu who has joined our sta this term. Fei is replacing Candice and is teaching Chinese from Pre-Primary to Year Six. We hope that Fei nds her me at Infant Jesus School both ful lling and very rewarding.

Code of Conduct A reminder that every member of the Infant Jesus School community must behave in the manner described in our Code of Conduct.

Our Code is like the 40km/h speed limit outside our school in the mornings and a ernoons. It de nes behaviours that keep our students safe: at school, and elsewhere. Children and young people surrounded by adult and peer behaviours described in the Code are more likely to recognise and choose healthy rela onships for themselves. We each keep our students safe by following our Code of Conduct and encouraging and reminding each other to do so. For Sta , our Code of Conduct is a lawful direc on and forms part of their employment agreement and for parents, compliance is a condi on of your entry to school premises.

There are twelve Conduct Statements in the Code of Conduct that everyone must adhere to. Speci c informa on and examples for Statements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 have been included in previous newsle ers in 2022. Further informa on will con nue to be included throughout the year with informa on rela ng to Statement 8 included in this newsle er.

Student Code of Conduct Included in the Safe School Framework sec on of each Newsle er is informa on regarding the CEWA Child Safe Framework and the Code of Conduct. There are twelve Conduct Statements with examples for Sta , Parents, Students, Volunteers and Visitors. The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe the minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

In following the CEWA Child Safe Framework recommenda on and guidelines to support the safety and well-being of all students Infant Jesus School also has a Student Code of Conduct. All students are familiar with the aspects of the Student Code of Conduct which focuses on Support, Safety, Respect, Inclusion and Con dence. Students, at their developmental level, are able to recognise how they are responsible for their ac ons and words and how they can also support their peers to further enhance their well-being and awareness of safety in our school environment.

The Student Code of Conduct and Student Behaviour Expecta ons support all children to be happy and safe at school. Students always have access to addi onal support when needed through the Student Process for Concerns.

Pre-Kindergarten 2022 The Pre-Kindergarten children are now a ending a full day program every Tuesday.

The half-day program also con nues each Thursday morning.

Children who are three years of age can a end this program.

Talking to kids makes them smart Michael Grose – Paren ng Ideas The links between school achievement and parents’ ability to talk with kids from a young age are now well established.

The language s mula on children receive when they talk with parents is one factor. But engagement in conversa on with parents bene ts kids in a far broader sense. In many ways it is through conversa ons that kids get a real sense of us as parents. It is through talking with kids that we impart some of our knowledge, ideas, wisdom and thoughts while also gaining access to a window into their worlds and the way they think.

In the current age of digital distrac on, talking with children and young people can be a challenge. Busy schedules, homes designed for individual enjoyment rather than group living, a plethora of screens compe ng for a en on and kids that clam up at the rst sign of a chat are some of the conversa on blockers parents must overcome.

You need to be cunning, proac ve and inven ve to get some chat going at home. These are some ideas that will help.

1. Turn screens o . Are you compe ng with televisions, computers and electronic games for your kids’ a en on? If so, take control of the screens to create some conversa onal space. Start with a screen-free day each week or screen-free hour each day if you have a home full of young hard-core screen junkies.

2. Turn screens on. If you can’t beat them, join them.

Some television programs provide great conversa onal fodder, par cularly for older children and teens. Topics can range from “Who’s going to win My Kitchen Rules?” or “What happens to the winners of My Kitchen Rules?” to “What is the point of My Kitchen Rules?”

3. Have regular meal mes. The family that eats together talks together. Meals are great social

occasions – more than just refuelling stops. They provide terri c opportuni es for families to get together and talk. It’s no coincidence that families who enjoy and appreciate food generally enjoy close rela onships as well. However, for this to work it's important that meals are screen free, so turn o the television and ban phones at the table.

4.Move more. If si ng and cha ng is not your child’s thing then try to get some ac on happening. Boys, in par cular, tend to talk more when they are playing, walking or involved in ac vity with an adult.

5.Talk with kids on their own turf. Many children will open up in the privacy of their own bedroom where they tend to feel more relaxed and secure. If you have something important to discuss then choose a comfortable place and a me that promotes good conversa on.

6. Try shoulder-to-shoulder paren ng. Travelling together in a car with the radio o , washing the dishes together or playing a game can all provide opportuni es for talk.

Paradoxically, many teenagers will talk more when they don’t have to concentrate or make eye contact with the other person. That’s why cars can be great conversa on catalysts for parents.

Every family has their own way of ge ng the talk happening. Figure out what works for you and make sure it happens. The best communica on in families happens when no one is working at it, however busy modern families need to work on their communica on rather than leave it to chance.

iShow, iExplain, iLearnt (Learning Journeys) Parent Teacher Online Learning Journeys will be held this Term for Kindergarten - Years 6 on 14 September, Monday of Week 9 from 3.30 – 6.00pm. The interview booking system will go live on the 26 August at 9.00am.

For these interviews we are con nuing to use the internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save me for parents, sta and students! Using this system, you will be able to book the interview mes that suit you best from any internet-connected device. A computer will be available in the library during school hours if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere.

Lexile- Literacy Pro Comprehension is an essen al reading skill that allows us to understand the meaning of text, pictures, movies, songs and more. As a way to enhance the comprehension skills of our older students, we have a home reading program- Literacy Prothat is used in Year 3-6.

Literacy Pro measures each student’s reading ability using a fast, adap ve online test. Children ini ally complete an online test at school which is assessed by the computer-based Lexile analyser. This gives students a reading level from BR (Beginning Reader) to 1500. This is o en referred to as a Lexile reading level or score. It enables teachers to monitor student progress throughout the year and keep track of their comprehension and vocabulary development.

Students are able to choose from a range of books which match their Lexile level in their library mes.

Addi onally, there are digital books available online in the Lexile site and your child may even nd their favourite book from home has a quiz available. Choosing a book that is at their level ensures that students are challenged but not frustrated by their chosen book. A er each book is read, students complete a quiz online which consists of 10 ques ons about the book they have just read. Students need to score at least 7/10 ques ons correct in order to pass the book and earn designated points for that book. This quiz is part of the Infant Jesus School homework program. Please note, if your child does not get 7/10 this is not seen as a problem, but rather that the book was too di cult, and they either need to re-read the book, or the program will recalculate their level. Cer cates are handed out during our Monday morning assembly for those children are passing Lexile levels to congratulate them of their progress.

Our main aim is for the children to read for enjoyment and develop a love for reading. Our students have been progressively taught how to work through the process in their classrooms; however, they may need support with the process un l they develop con dence and familiarity with the program. It is important that they ask for help as soon as possible. If problems arise please contact your child’s class teacher.

Class News Year Six Migra on Stories This term in Year Six we are learning about migra on, and the push/pull e ects that cause people to move away from their homeland.

The students have been interviewing a family member or a friend who has moved to Australia. They will use this informa on to create a digital account of the person’s migra on story.

by Anh Do they measured out the dimensions of the boat that Anh’s family escaped on and re ected on how forty people lived on board such a ny boat.

Year One

100 Days Smarter From the very rst day of Year One, we have been coun ng how many days we’ve been in school. This week, we FINALLY reached 100 days! To celebrate, we had a 100 Days party. In Maths, we spent a lot of me learning our numbers to 100 and all the di erent ways we can represent it. Did you know, 100 is made up of ten groups of ten?

We started o our day crea ng bucket lists containing: things we want to see; places we want to go; people we want to be; and the things we want to have by the me we turn 100! We also had a gallery walk where we viewed all of the di erent representa ons of 100 that our friends had brought in from home!

To nish o the celebra on, we spent the a ernoon doing fun STEAM ac vi es and even completed 100 reps of exercise. There were lots of 100 year olds jumping about on the oval for this! We wish we could count all the way to 200 for another fun celebra on of all our learning!!

Class News Sport Fac on Cross Country Carnival Last term, students from Years 1 – 6 ventured to Lightning Park for the annual Fac on Cross Country Carnival. The students worked extremely hard throughout the term and were extremely excited to put their running skills on show. A er cancelling the rst date due to bad weather we nally managed a beau ful day for running! The determina on, e ort and sportsmanship shown was simply amazing.

Well done to Lima who were the winning fac on on the day! I would like to thank the children for the e ort they showed, the Infant Jesus sta for their support, and the wonderful parent helpers.

Class News Sport The Year 6 Winter Lightning Carnival Also last term the Year 6 students competed in the annual Winter Lightning Carnival. The Winter Carnival consists of three sports: Netball, Soccer and AFL with shorter games being played in a round-robin format. The purpose of the Winter Carnival is par cipa on, no scoring takes place so the students are there to have FUN!. Infant Jesus competed with one AFL, three netball and two soccer teams. The students were extremely excited to compete in their rst Winter carnival and the day did not disappoint. The students displayed great leadership and sportsmanship skills as they competed against seven other schools in our CPSSA.

Healthy Ea ng Myths Busted!

MYTH: Freshly squeezed juice is a healthy op on 600ml of freshly squeezed fruit juice has about 16 teaspoons of sugar, which is a similar amount of sugar found in coke! This amount of sugar is well over the recommended amount of sugar per day.

How is this so? When you juice fruit, you use a lot more fruit and you squeeze all the sugar into the glass and throw out the bre- which is the best part that helps our diges ve system. Two pieces of fresh fruit is BEST. MYTH: Cu ng out food groups is good for my health There are so many diets like no sugar, no carbs and no gluten- do any of them actually help the average person stay health and happy? Research shows that restric ve diets can lead to nega ve health outcomes, they are di cult to maintain in the long run and they create social anxiety. Instead of going along with the latest fad diet, focus on ea ng a variety of whole foods from the ve core foods groups. It is also important to model healthy and balanced ea ng habits for your kids.

MYTH: Reduced fat dairy has added sugar Dairy products whether reduced fat or full fat, have similar sugar contents per 100ml. Also, even though the fat has been reduced; this does not mean that the amount of calcium and protein has been reduced.

Informa on Technology

Podcasts Podcasts are a great way for your child to learn more about the world and spark conversa ons between family members about new and interes ng topics.

There are many great bene ts of listening to podcasts.

• Listening encourages conversa on. Kids o en have ques ons a er listening to a podcast, giving families a chance to look things up (What does lava look like when a volcano erupts?) and con nue learning together long a er the episode is over.

• Storytelling podcasts foster imagina on. Shows like Stories Podcast by Wondery are perfect for bed me, and Story Pirates by Gimlet always capture imagina ons (for grownups and kids!).

• Podcasts keep kids curious. Some great podcasts, like NPR’s Wow in the World, invite curious kids and grownups to explore the world with entertaining hosts, and engaging characters.

• Podcasts are free. Most podcasts available from Spo fy or Apple Podcasts for free. No special equipment is required!

Infant Jesus Day Infant Jesus Day is coming up soon and in order for the P+F to supply a sausage sizzle to each child, sta member and parent, we need volunteers.

If you are available to assist during the morning on Friday 26th August, please contact Vanessa Ga at president.pafc@gmail.com. We need volunteers to cook on the BBQ from 9am, and other volunteers to help in the canteen with making and delivering the hotdogs from about 11:30am.

If you can spare a couple hours to assist, we’d love to have your help.

Dr Cris na Lledo Gomez The Commi ee for the Council for Catholic Women Perth warmly invites you to three talks by Dr Cris na Lledo Gomez at James Nestor Hall Catholic Educa on O ce 60 Ruislip St West Leederville.

Cris na is the Presenta on Sisters Lecturer at BBI-The Australian Ins tute of Theological Educa on where she promotes women’s spirituali es, feminist theologies and eco-theologies. Cris na is inspired by Karl Rahner SJ and has lectured at Boston and Berkeley Universi es USA. She is the author of The Church as Woman and Mother and has published many ar cles covering her stated interests. Married with 2 children Cris na is proud of her Filipina heritage.

Father and Son Camp 2022 Save the date and call for commi ee members Father and Son Camp is BACK for 2022!
