2022 Netball Club Keyed Up Music Containers for Change

From the Principal Welcome to the start of the 2022 school year at Infant Jesus School. It was great to see all the children so excited, enthusias c and happy to be back at school. A er expec ng to be walking into school as we concluded last year they have all adjusted extremely well to another year with a di erent start. The independence, op mis c approach and resilience demonstrated by all the children has enabled them to se le quickly and easily into the rou ne of the school day and the rou ne of being in a new classroom, with a new teacher and with a di erent group of friends. The dedica on, exper se, organisa on and planning of all the sta have ensured that the rst day enabled all the children to easily se le back into the expecta ons and rou nes of school. Teachers also have had to be adaptable, crea ve and pa ent as they organised learning for the term and the year. With all the an cipa on it was fantas c to see the e ort of the teachers as they planned interes ng and engaging learning experiences that mo vated children on the rst day and will con nue to engage the students throughout the year to have success as life-long learners.

To support Learning and the Learners at Infant Jesus School the ini a ves focus on providing students with new, and poten ally, challenging opportuni es. At home, some children may have shared the following ac vi es from the rst dew days of school.

Sincere thank you to all the parents who also once again were very accommoda ng and though ul which also contributed to an enjoyable start to the school year. Parents were very suppor ve enabling their children to independently organise themselves with all that is required for the day and entering the classrooms con dently by themselves. Once again, thank you parents for your e orts ‘behind the scenes’ in preparing children as this greatly assists in strengthening the partnership between home and school. We can be grateful that our community is as safe and healthy as possible, however, we also think of those who need extra care and considera on at this me and those who con nue to wait pa ently to see and or visit loved ones. We know and con nually keep in our prayers and thoughts our families, our communi es and countries around the world who are su ering in any way due to the pandemic. As we look forward with excitement and an cipa on to 2022 we integrate a Christ-centred and child-focused approach in all that we do as we con nue to work together to a ain our aspira on of A LEADing Learning School.

In all our work and life at Infant Jesus School we are always striving to improve in all that we do. For this to happen we con nue to #Expect Great Things of ourselves and others and work together to enable our community to ourish and to Exceed Expecta ons.

New Families and Sta In a special way, I would like to welcome all those who are new to the family of Infant Jesus School. My prayer and hope for you is that your associa on with the school will be long and las ng, and one lled with many rewarding memories. This year has been an interes ng start for all families. We recognise and support those new to our school community and assist them by providing them with empathy, gentleness and care as they se le into a new environment. Along with new families, we also have some new faces who have joined our sta for 2022. Congratula ons This morning our Year Six students were commissioned as leaders for 2022 at Infant Jesus School and presented with their Leadership Badges by Fr Greg. It is a very exci ng me of the year for these students as they re ect on the responsibili es that they now have and how they will be an example of leadership for all in the community through their words and ac ons each day. It was great that so many parents could join us to celebrate this very important occasion.

During 2022, I am looking forward to this group of Year Sixes taking on the responsibili es of leadership. Throughout their me as leaders, they will be involved in the work of two ministries as well as some general work within the school.

The Sustainability Ministry aims to provide opportuni es from the school community to ac vely engage in the care of our environment. The Sustainability Ministry promotes the care of our environment by monitoring environmental concerns and crea ng sustainable prac ces within our school. The Wellness Ministry aims to promote a healthy life-style through regular tness and healthy ea ng. The Wellness Ministry is responsible for the organisa on of the lunch me sports equipment, assis ng at carnivals and arranging health challenges within the school. The Media Ministry aims to create and work at promo ng and enhancing the digital footprint of our school, as well as sharing digital communica on about what is happening at our school with the community. The Public Rela ons Ministry aims to promote ac ve public speaking and organisa on skills by leading, assis ng and presen ng Assemblies, Masses and liaising with classroom teachers.

Medical Condi ons/Family Details If your child has a medical condi on, e.g. anaphylaxis or asthma, the required paperwork should have been completed and given to the School O ce. Students in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Pre-Primary will have medica ons stored in the classroom; however, the School O ce will s ll need to be no ed of your child’s medical condi on. Please also ensure that Family details are current including address, phone numbers, email and emergency contacts.

Communica on At all mes communica on is vital for all in our community. This year the Veritas will con nue to be published fortnightly. The school will also use SEQTA/SMS to alert parents and families to refer to important messages posted by the Leadership Team on Seesaw via ‘Announcements.’

Class Teachers will con nue to use Seesaw to keep parents informed of class ac vi es. Parent-Teacher Informa on Pack This year, with the current health and safety situa on, we will be providing a digital ParentTeacher Informa on Pack to all families tomorrow. We greatly value the partnership between home and school and have created this resource to share informa on for the year and expecta ons to support your child’s progress during the year. The pack, which includes a • movie presenta on • digital copy of the booklet • hard copy of the booklet This will enable exibility for all families. We strongly encourage parents to access the presenta on and the booklet and to contact the class teacher if any further informa on is needed. The year level Parent-Teacher Informa on Pack is a valuable resource that parents are encouraged to refer to throughout the year. Parents are encouraged to submit any ques ons regarding the school year to teachers on the form posted to Seesaw tomorrow.

School Uniform Thank you to all the parents for your e orts in ensuring your children had the correct uniform for the start of school on Monday. It was fantas c to see everyone in the Summer Uniform introduced in 2020. Our uniform dress code reinforces in students pride in their appearance, ins ls recogni on of themselves as an integral part of belonging to our school community and assists in developing pride in represen ng their school. The Fac on Polo and Hat will con nue to be worn each Friday. We are looking forward to the rst ‘Fac on Friday’ of 2022 where we will welcome the Year One students as we con nue to develop fac on ‘spirit’ when we sit with other children in our fac ons at recess and lunch. Parents are reminded that the Infant Jesus School uniform can only be purchased at One World Uniforms. Parents looking for alterna ve navy shorts from other shopping outlets or suppliers will clash with the correct school uniform. This was one of the reasons why we had to change our uniform as there were so many varia ons of the shorts the boys were wearing to school.

2022 Term Calendar Update With the constantly evolving situa on some events have been reorganised. We thank parents and families for their pa ence and exibility with the rescheduled dates and events which are s ll subject to change.

Code of Conduct

Our Code is like the 40km/h speed limit outside our school in the mornings and a ernoons. It de nes behaviours that keep our students safe: at school, and elsewhere. Children and young people surrounded by adult and peer behaviours described in the Code are more likely to recognise and choose healthy rela onships for themselves. We each keep our students safe by following our Code of Conduct, and encouraging and reminding each other to do so. For Sta , our Code of Conduct is a lawful direc on and forms part of your employment agreement. For parents, compliance is a condi on of your entry to school premises. Informa on regarding the Code of Conduct is included in the Safe School Framework page/s of this Newsle er. All members of our community need to comply with the 12 statements at all mes.

Student Code of Conduct Included in the Safe School Framework sec on of each Newsle er is informa on regarding the CEWA Child Safe Framework and the Code of Conduct. There are twelve Conduct Statements with examples for Sta , Parents, Students, Volunteers and Visitors. The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe the minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

In following the CEWA Child Safe Framework recommenda on and guidelines to support the safety and wellbeing of all students Infant Jesus School has also developed Infant Jesus School Student Code of Conduct. All students are familiar with the aspects of the Student Code of Conduct which focuses on Support, Safety, Respect, Inclusion and Con dence. Students, at their developmental level, are able to recognise how they are responsible for their ac ons and words and how they can also support their peers to further enhance their wellbeing and awareness of safety in our school environment. In signing the Enrolment Applica on for Infant Jesus School all parents/guardians have agreed to abide by the procedures and direc ons of the school and the Catholic Educa on Commission of Western Australia. This includes living out the Catholic Ethos of the school and suppor ng a Christcentred approach to all we do within our Infant Jesus School community. Within this signed agreement, Infant Jesus School expects Parents/Guardians to make responsible choices when using Informa on and Communica on Technologies at school. The guidelines outlined for Sta and Students equally apply to Parents / Guardians and the extended community. Parents need to be aware that using emails to communicate with sta will not receive an instant reply. In fact, response mes may vary. Urgent ma ers must be directed by phone to the school o ce. Speci cally, and in addi on to the guidelines for Sta and Students, Parents / Guardians need to adhere to the following. As parents we need to: • Understand that correspondence during school me can only occur through the school o ce. Parents may not email children directly during school hours. • Understand privacy laws pertaining to photography. At school or a school func on parents may take photographs of their children, but they may not take photographs of other children without the permission of the children’s parents. This permission needs to be in wri ng and presented to the school prior to the speci c func on in ques on. • Understand that privacy laws do not allow parents to comment on, or post photos of people/ children of Infant Jesus School. •Understand that privacy laws restrict parents in their reference to Infant Jesus School. All reference needs to uphold the Catholic Ethos of the School. •Understand that any reference pertaining to Infant Jesus School may not be made on social network sites, email or other technology unless it is approved by the School and upholds the Ethos of the School and CEWA Inc. •Understand that the digital footprint that is established the minute a person begins pos ng items, messages or photographs on social network sites will be there forever. •Understand that the use of ‘Class Facebook Pages’ are only to be used to share informa on pertaining to the class and not used as a vehicle to discuss individual concerns or general conversa on. It is important that as parents we look at sharing the ‘Good News’ about our school.

Once again, the school has con nued its partnership with the OSH Club to provide before and a er school care for our school children. If your family is intending to use this service in 2022 – more informa on can be found on the Infant Jesus School website or from the front o ce.

Kindergarten 2023 – Applica ons are Now Due Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023. Families with children eligible for Kindergarten in 2022 (born from July 2018 to June 2019) are required to ll out an Infant Jesus School Applica on Form. Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

From my readings… A new school year means a fresh start for students. Regardless of your child’s performance last year, they start school with a clean slate. A break o ers students the chance to begin new habits and adopt new behaviours. Here are seven ideas to help you make the most of the fresh start and make this year your child’s best year ever year at school: 1. Commit to your child going to school every day on me One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day – and gets there on me. Kids spend more me asleep than at school, so we need to maximise every day to get full value. 2. Help kids start each day well A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and some words of encouragement from you will help set a posi ve tone for a day of learning. This may mean that you adjust your morning rou ne so that kids have plenty of me to get up, eat and get ready for the day. Consider taking a leaf out of the book of a friend of mine who gets her children to make their beds each morning which sets the tone for a produc ve day ahead. 3. Establish work & study habits The most successful students are those that develop regular study habits that suit their lifestyle, their study style and their school’s expecta ons. Find out the work expecta ons from your child’s or young person’s school and help them establish a work rou ne that matches their personality, lifestyle and family style. Be exible here as one size doesn’t t all when it comes to study rou nes.

4. Make sure your child gets enough sleep I encourage you to make a big focus as this year as many children and young people are sleep-deprived, which impacts on their well-being and their learning. A good night’s sleep consolidates learning, as well as assis ng future learning. Children need between 10-12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a

minimum of nine hours. Help kids get su cient sleep by having a regular bed- me and get-up me each day. Have 45 minute wind-down me each night, and remove screens and mobile phones from bedrooms. 5. Get your kids outside more for good physical and mental health Kids today get less exercise than those of past genera ons, which is an impediment to learning and mental health. Health professionals recommend a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise per day for kids of all ages. Encourage kids to play sport; promote free and ac ve play and look for ways to make moving part of their daily lives. Consider increasing your child’s green me and decreasing screen me for good physical and mental health. 6. Focus on being friendly Schools are very social places requiring kids to nego ate many di erent social situa ons each day. Encourage kids to be open and tolerant; to be friendly; to be involved in plenty of ac vi es and to be social risk-takers. Some kids close down their friendship opportuni es through self-centredness, poor a tude and unwillingness to take social risks. 7. Develop self-help skills Successful students are o en well-organised, self-directed and self-mo vated. You can foster organisa onal skills and self-direc on by developing simple, age-appropriate self-help skills related to their every day lives. Also use visual paren ng techniques to aid organisa on and encourage independence. Such skills as making lunches, packing school bags, and organising a er school schedules can be great lessons that impact on how kids perform at school. At the start of the school year kids are likely to adopt changes than at any other me. Make the most of the opportunity by focusing on two or three areas to really target and you’ll nd that the rest may well fall into place.

Prayer For The Beginning Of The School Year Heavenly Father, At the commencement of this new year, We praise and thank you for the gi of life and for the opportunity of growth awai ng us. We thank you for love – the love and concern of our families, our friends, and our teachers. We ask you to bless each of us in the year ahead. Help us to grow in faith, in hope and in love. Create in us a capacity for giving and courage to be discerning in all that we do. Let wisdom be our guide. And may each of us be a messenger of the Good News. Assistant Principals' Corner Hair and Jewellery To protect the health and hygiene of all children at our school, we ask that all hair that is collar length or longer is ed up. Hairstyles should not be radical and hair should not be dyed. Children with hair that dangles in front of their face will be asked to clip it back. Hair ribbons/scrunchies must be the school colours of navy or white and hair elas cs may be black, navy or white. Children need to take responsibility for their own jewellery. Children may wear one plain gold or silver stud or sleeper in their ears, and wear a simple gold or silver cross or chris an medallion on a necklace. Simple wristwatches are encouraged.

Please note, the use of smartwatches is discouraged due to the distrac on they cause in class. The use of smartwatches is governed by the school’s ICT guidelines and any incorrect use will see the smartwatch being sent to the o ce and a parent being ask to pick it up.

Drive-Thru Families with children in Years 1-6 are able to u lise the two drive-thrus when picking up their children in the a ernoon. The drive-thru behind the hall is accessible via Peter’s Place and there is another drive-thru o Russell Street. As in previous years, all families with children in Year Six are asked to collect their children from the Russell Street drive-thru. All other families are also welcome to collect their children from this drive-thru. If you wish to walk into the school to collect your child, parking is available in the church carpark.

Parking Around the School Parking around our school is limited. Please be aware of council restric ons and our neighbours when parking on public roads and at Peter’s Place. Parking in the carpark accessible o Russell Street is only for parents picking up children in Pre-Kindy, Kindy and Pre-Primary. As members of Infant Jesus Parish, all families are welcome to park at the church and walk to the school.

Please be courteous of all members of our school community when parking and do not park in the ACROD bays unless you have a permit. Some family members in our school rely upon these bays to drop/collect their children safely and it is extremely frustra ng when able-bodied members of our community park in them.

Cash for Cans

As part of our Stewardship focus for 2022, we have implemented a juice box/water bo le recycling system at recess and lunch. The children have been encouraged to recycle their juice boxes and disposable bo les in this system. These items will then be collected and money raised given to the P&F. By recycling our juice boxes, milk cartons and plas c bo les we will be helping the environment and our school.

Sound Waves Sound of the Week! Week 2 - B The sound ‘b’ is most frequently represented by the grapheme b (e.g. ball, table, web). The grapheme bb for is seen in the middle of words, a er short vowel sounds (e.g. rabbit, cabbage). The grapheme pb is an unusual way to represent (e.g. cupboard, raspberry).

Week 3 - A The sound ‘a’ is used at the start and in the middle of words, but never at the end of words (e.g. apple, black). When the le er ‘a’ is before the sound m, n, or ng it sounds slightly di erent than when it is before other consonant phonemes. You can say pan and pat to hear the di erence. The sound ‘a’ is almost always represented by the grapheme a with very few excep ons (e.g. salmon, plait, meringue).

Reminder: All students from Year 1 to Year 6 are able to log into Sound Waves with their class code. Class codes are available from classroom teachers.

Lunar New Year! 恭喜恭喜新年快乐! You may have no ced the lanterns hanging in the piazza. To kick o Lunar New Year, students have been busy crea ng a collabora ve art piece by thumb prin ng stripes on a ger. In Chinese, Yang Lao Shi has been busy assis ng the students to develop an understanding of this important celebra on. This week your child will receive a card with a gold chocolate coin. Tradi onally in Chinese Culture, children receive coins in a red pocket. These coins are handed out as they represent wealth and abundance. Chinese coins were once a currency in Ancient China.

The Lunar New Year holiday lasts 15 days and there are plenty more exci ng things planned for our Infant Jesus students!

Parent Volunteers Workshop At Infant Jesus School we recognise parents as the rst educator in their child’s life. Studies have shown the impact parents who are involved in their child’s school life have on their studies. Volunteer Workshops will be held on Thursday 22 February at 9:30am and 5:00pm in the school hall for parents wishing to help in the classroom or a end excursions with classes. All parents who have not a ended previously, need to a end the volunteer workshop if they wish to support classrooms with special ac vi es. Twosday! On Tuesday the 22 February 2022, Infant Jesus School will celebrate Twosday. Twosday is a special event that only happens once in a life me when the date only contains the number 2- 22/2/22!

To celebrate Twosday, we ask that all students wear something that represents the number 2. Some ideas may include wearing two crazy socks, a shirt with the number two or it could be wearing your hair in two pigtails. More informa on will be provided closer to this special day.

We Are Called This Gospel

Each week we listen to the Gospel. The Gospel tells us the good news of Jesus Christ’s coming and dying for our sins.

Luke 5:1-11 - Sunday 6 February Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, teaching the people as they crowded around him to hear God's message. Near the shore he saw two boats le there by some shermen who had gone to wash their nets. Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Simon and asked him to row it out a li le way from the shore. Then Jesus sat down in the boat to teach the crowd. When Jesus had nished speaking, he told Simon, "Row the boat out into the deep water and let your nets down to catch some sh."

"Master," Simon answered, "we have worked hard all night long and have not caught a thing. But if you tell me to, I will let the nets down.” They did it and caught so many sh that their nets began ripping apart. Then they signalled for their partners in the other boat to come and help them. The men came, and together they lled the two boats so full that they both began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this happen, he kneeled down in front of Jesus and said, "Lord, don't come near me! I am a sinner.” Peter and everyone with him were completely surprised at all the sh they had caught. His partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were surprised too. Jesus told Simon, "Don't be afraid! From now on you will bring in people instead of sh." The men pulled their boats up on the shore. Then they le everything and went with Jesus. Peter and his friends were experienced shermen; they knew what they were doing. They had shed all night without catching a single sh. So when Jesus told Peter to row out into the lake and lower his net again, it took a lot of trust from Peter. Peter obeyed Jesus because he trusted in him. Talk together about what Peter must have been thinking when Jesus gave the instruc on, and when he saw all the sh in that net. Are there things in your life that you need to trust Jesus with?

Luke 6:17, 20-23 - Sunday 13 February Jesus and his apostles went down from the mountain and came to some at, level ground. Many other disciples were there to meet him. Large crowds of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the coastal ci es of Tyre and Sidon were there too. Jesus looked at his disciples and said: "God will bless you people who are poor. His kingdom belongs to you! God will bless you hungry people. You will have plenty to eat! God will bless you people who are crying. You will laugh! "God will bless you when others hate you and won't have anything to do with you. God will bless you when people insult you and say cruel things about you, all because you are a follower of the Son of Man! Long ago your own people did these same things to the prophets. "So when this happens to you, be happy and jump for joy! You will have a great reward in heaven."

Class News Pre-Primary Welcome to School The Pre-Primary children have had an amazing start to the school year. They have learnt new songs, and are star ng to make new friends. Some of the new things they have done this week is going to Music with Mrs Carroll, visi ng Mrs Bonomi in the Library, having a Sport lesson with Miss Witkowski, learning Chinese with Yang Lao Shi, exploring Science with Mrs Mansergh and being taught Health by Mrs Middleton.

We are so excited to guide, nurture and develop these li le minds this year.

Class News Kindergarten Our First Week of Kindy! The Kindy children have had an amazing rst week at school. The children have made lots of new friends, had fun exploring all the learning centres and outside area and shown the sta just how resilient they are! The children have had fun pain ng, drawing, building and playing in the water trolley.

The Kindy children are so excited to come back to school next week and learn all about each other.

Safe School Framework

Child Safe Framework at Infant Jesus School As a Catholic school within the Catholic Educa on System of Western Australia we are commi ed to be a child safe organisa on. We believe our children and young people have the right to be safe, feel safe and to be able to ourish in their learning and development. At Infant Jesus School, the safety and well-being of our students is a highest priority and is of utmost importance. We are commi ed to child safety and ensuring that we have a child safe culture at our school. Safe School Framework

All sta at Infant Jesus School have been trained in Mandatory Repor ng and have Police Clearances and Working with Children accredita on. Mandatory Repor ng training is updated on a biennial cycle, and Working With Children clearance needs to be updated every three years. Conduct Statements 1. You act safely and competently. 2. JAMF Parent At Infant Jesus School, our BYOD 1-1 iPads are managed using Jamf. There is also a parent version that parents are able to access available on the Apple App Store and the Android Jamf Parent is an app that allows you to manage your children's school-issued devices. Using Jamf Parent, you can restrict and allow apps and device func onality on your children's devices. Jamf Parent is available on iOS and Android. No Stopping Areas

Areas in and around schools present potential parking problems as there may be speeding motorists,busy roads and limited parking bays.

The City of Bayswater Officers conduct regular school parking patrols during school times and are happy to help with any parking concerns your school may have. We can attend your school to remind parents about safe parking and follow up by issuing infringements if needed.

• Parking over footpaths

No Stopping areas can be defined by signage or a continuous yellow line painted along the edge of a road. A driver is not permitted to stop on a length of road or in an area to where no stopping restrictions apply. Vehicles may only stop in these zones to comply with other regulations (for example at traffic lights or to avoid an accident). Drivers are not permitted to drop off passengers or goods in “No Stopping” areas.

How can parents help? • Walk or cycle to school when dropping off or collecting children • Park nearby and walk a short distance to the school • Plan your trip so you arrive on the school side of the road

• Parking on a verge without the owner’s consent

• Form a School Road Safety committee (contract your Principal or P&C)

How can schools help? • Educate students about parking procedures around the school • Encourage children to educate their parents and guardians on safe school parking • Establish a supervised ‘Kiss and Ride’ facility or traffic policy which can be published • Notify parents of any problems via school newsletters

Double Parking A driver must not stop a vehicle so that any portion of the vehicle is between any other stopped vehicle and the centre of the road.
