From the Principal Dear Parents It is hard to believe that three quarters of the school year has been completed. The weeks have just own by – especially during Term Three.

Many ac vi es and events have taken place at Infant Jesus School that have involved a number of people to whom we are very grateful. Most importantly, has been the prepara on of the students in Year Four for the Sacrament of Eucharist. This is a very important me in the faith journey of the students and we congratulate them again on receiving this very special and sacred sacrament.

We also recognise and thank a number of people for their e orts and contribu ons during the past ten weeks. The teachers, support sta and ancillary sta at Infant Jesus School are welcoming and professional in their support and educa on of the students within their care and their commitment to the progress and improvement of the whole school. The addi onal Support Teachers and Educa onal Assistants that we provide each year level is signi cant and greatly bene ts the children by facilita ng addi onal and purposeful teaching programs to assist all children in their learning journey.

Uniform Reminder

Much has been realised in a rather busy Term Three and it is very rewarding to see the achievements in the class and in the school. The students have worked produc vely, amid the many ac vi es and events to produce some quality work and pleasing results. The ‘Learning Journey Night’ showcased many of these achievements.

In partnership with parents, your support and a rma on of our students and sta play a big part in crea ng a conducive and s mula ng learning environment. We appreciate your ongoing assistance in these areas and acknowledge the strong rela onship that exists between home and school.

We also recognise the e orts of both the School Advisory Commi ee, and our P&F Associa on led by Mr Sam Modica and Mrs Vanessa Ga respec vely. Their level of support along with their commi ees is enormous and we are most apprecia ve of all that they do for our school.

Learning Journeys As our students and families gathered on Monday 13 September for the Learning Journeys it was fantas c to see the children sharing their learning with their parents. The Learning Journey session provided an opportunity for parents, children and the school to come together to support, share and celebrate each child’s learning. It was both rewarding and mo va ng to hear the students discuss their knowledge, interests and abili es as they explained their learning, e ort, progress, achievements and goals with their parents. The children are very proud of the work that they do, as are their parents.

Performing Arts Congratula ons to the Infant Jesus School Choir who par cipated in the Catholic Schools Spirit of the Arts Fes val which included both Performing Arts and Carnivale.

The School Choir received an ‘Excellence’ Award for their performance on Thursday 26 August 2021 in the Primary Choral sec on.

NAPLAN Individual reports for the assessments that Year 3 and Year 5 students sat in May were sent home yesterday. These assessments in key areas of literacy and numeracy provide parents and educators with a snapshot of how students are progressing — individually, as part of their school community and as a na on.

NAPLAN results enable parents and teachers to see how students are progressing, not just within their class, but also against na onal standards that have been agreed upon by all state and territory governments.

As Infant Jesus School is double stream school, we are very fortunate that we can provide the opportunity for classes to be reset each year. This annual process supports students to enhance their

social and emo onal skills to enable them to work successfully and coopera vely with all students in their year level.

Each year teachers put a great deal of thought into the development of new classes as it is exci ng to mee ng new and di erent people throughout our lives. As new classes are created each year it is our role as parents and teachers to support our children through change rather than protect them from it.

If there is something excep onal that needs considera on in this process, we would presume that this has already been communicated with the school previously or in the last two weeks or at the very latest by the last day of this term. In this annual process we respec ully ask that you do not request speci c teachers for your child/ children as this is not excep onal.

Athle cs Carnival 2021 The Infant Jesus School Athle cs Carnival will take place on Thursday 14 October 2021 (Week 1, Term 4) at the Inglewood Li le Athle c Centre (Dianella Regional Open Space).

The day will commence at approximately 9:15am and should conclude around 2:30pm. All children are to arrive at school for the usual start me.

Buses will leave school at 8:50am at the latest.

Similar to last year, the carnival will take on a tabloid format involving a rota on of team games as well as relays and individual races.

Children are asked to wear their fac on polo shirt. We also encourage them to wear sunscreen because they will be out in the sun for the majority of the day. All items need to be clearly marked with their name. Mascots, hair ribbons and banners are allowed to encourage team spirit; however, No hair dye or face paint will be allowed (Coloured zinc is permi ed).

On the day, children will need to bring their recess, lunch, hat and a bo le of water.

If parents wish to take their child home at the comple on of the carnival, a le er needs to be given to class teacher. Please note, children will not be permi ed to go home with other parents or friends. Parents are only permi ed to take their own child from the Athle c Carnival. Please do not ask on the day as the request will be denied as we have a duty of care and a responsibility of keeping accurate records. We know that the children are looking forward to a fun day where they can showcase their athle c skills!

Best Wishes As many families would be aware, today is Mrs Sophie Jorrisen’s last day at Infant Jesus School for now as she takes parental leave commencing next week. Mrs Jorrisen and her husband Ma are expec ng their rst child in November.

Sophie has been part of the Infant Jesus School community since 2018, teaching in Pre-Primary and Year One. Sophie always approaches her teaching and her work with enthusiasm, exper se and happiness and we are sure that she will make a wonderful Mum. We wish Sophie and Ma all the very best as they embark on this new chapter in their life.

Thank you to parents At Infant Jesus School both the Soccer and Netball Clubs have had a busy and produc ve season. There are many parents who have assisted with the various teams as coaches, assistant coaches, managers, umpires, commi ee members and supporters. Without YOU the children would not have the opportunity to par cipate in these compe ons.

Both Mother and Daughter Camp and the Father and Son Camp are also organised by some very generous and enthusias c parents. The Mother and Daughter Camp was held earlier in the year and the Father and Son Camp will be held next term. These camps are quite unique in a primary school and we THANK the parents who take on coordinator roles and con nue these valuable ac vi es for our school.

Uniform – Term Four A reminder to all students and parents about the Infant Jesus School Uniform. The uniform at Infant Jesus School is a symbol of the school’s community and it assists children to develop a sense of unity and belonging. Wearing the uniform encourages a sense of personal pride in the school. Whenever the uniform is worn at school or public places it must be worn in accordance with the school policy.

Children at Infant Jesus are expected to wear full school uniform at all mes. A Uniform Schedule is available on the school Web page or the school o ce. The uniform is a major investment by parents, and it is important that ALL clothing should be clearly marked with the child’s name. If parents have a di culty with the school uniform, please make an appointment to see Miss Mo at.

Expecta ons Children are expected to be well groomed and have a sense of pride in their appearance. Children are expected to look clean, neat and dy at all mes.

Hair For health reasons all shoulder length hair needs to be ed back securely. If hair is longer than the bo om of the collar, it must be completely ed back with an elas c band in school colours. The school colours of blue and white should be used when using ribbon. Also; •Children’s haircuts need to be conserva ve and appropriate to uniform expecta ons.

•Hair must be a natural colour. Extremes in hair colour and styles are not acceptable. ffi

THANK YOU to all the parents who have very generously contributed in various ways to the development of each player, not only on game day, but at all the training sessions and various mee ngs throughout the season.

•Children should avoid excess use of hair gel or hair products.

•Dreadlocks or coloured beads are not permi ed.

•Excessively short hair is not permi ed. A cut shorter than a number two is unacceptable.

•Hair must be clean, brushed and kept o the face.

Jewellery/ Make-Up • Children should not wear valuable jewellery to school. Apart from the fact that it can be lost or broken it is a distrac on to themselves and others around them.

• For safety reasons the only acceptable earrings are studs. Children who wear studs may wear only one in each ear.

• Make up and nail polish is not to be worn while in school uniform.

Since 2019 there have been many no ces in the school newsle er regarding the Infant Jesus School Uniform. The following informa on is from the Veritas Week 2, Term 1 2020 and was included as a reminder in the Veritas Week 6, Term 1 2021 and is s ll current.

‘Parents are reminded that the Infant Jesus School uniform can only be purchased at One World Uniforms. Parents looking for alterna ve navy shorts from other shopping outlets or suppliers will clash with the correct school uniform.

This was one of the reasons why we had to change our uniform this year as there were so many varia ons of the shorts the boys were wearing to school.

I want to be very clear about the transi on to the new Infant Jesus School Uniform. This was outlined to parents in Semester 2, 2019 and the NEW

uniform was displayed for a number of weeks in the hall at this me. It was also discussed at the ACM in 2019. ALL students a ending Infant Jesus School will be required to wear the NEW School Uniform (Winter, Summer & Sports - all with the new logo) by 2022. We feel this, gives parents enough me to transi on from the old uniform to the new uniform.’

Pre-Kindergarten applica ons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022.

Families with children eligible for PreKindergarten in 2022 are required to ll out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Tuesday and Thursday.

Pre-Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible.

Helping kids feel good by doing good Michael Grose – Paren ng Ideas We all want our kids to feel good. Ice cream, days at the beach and play dates may bring kids joy, but once they’re nished the good feeling o en disappears.

These feel-good ac vi es give kids a rush of euphoria, but leave them craving for more. This can lead to an addic ve cycle known as ‘the hedonic treadmill’ where one cookie isn't enough. They'll need two. Maybe the next week, they’ll need three.

Good deeds Doing good, however, is the key to living a more meaningful and happier existence. The ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle knew it was true, and modern research bears out the fact altruis c behaviours are associated with be er wellbeing, health and longevity. In short, we feel good when we do good.

Kind Kids Every parent wants happy kids. The easiest way to help kids a ain happiness is to encourage them to be kind.

Many studies show that our kids want to be kind. They know it makes them happy! Research shows that children from as young as fourteen months want to help others achieve individual goals and cooperate with others to achieve shared goals. This desire to help is something they’re born with – even that child of yours who doesn’t seem to want to help anyone!

A recent landmark study showed even very young kids nd helpful and kind acts to be intrinsically rewarding. Two year olds showed greater happiness when they gave treats to others, compared to when they received treats themselves.

Teaching Our Kids to Do Good If kids want to help because it helps them feel great, it’s our job to help ful l this natural inclina on by guiding them to age-appropriate opportuni es to do so.

Here are 5 ways to do just that: •Role model helpfulness and kindness. Children and teenagers learn to be helpful and kind by copying the signi cant adults in their lives.

•Encourage them to perform small acts of kindness. Being kind, giving a compliment, helping to dy up- these small acts are just as powerful and e ec ve as larger tasks such as mowing the lawn for a neighbour.

•Make helping a family project. Get your kids involved when you take a meal to a family who have just had a new baby, or visit a sick friend in the hospital.

•Be a good neighbour. Help your kids learn to keep an eye on others, whether it is a neighbour, or a boy on their sports team. Teaching your kids to no ce what’s going on

in the lives of people in their community promotes awareness and empathy.

•Be grateful. Expressing gra tude is one of the best ways to do good. In fact, nothing can improve your life (and the life of others) like gra tude.

• Doing good deeds is what makes us human. It li s burdens from others, and li s us by ac va ng the joyful part of our brains. Teaching your kids to do good is the best way to help them have las ng ‘feel good’ feelings. Of course, they should eat cake too. Even be er, share it with a friend for a las ng feel-good e ect.

Prayer -St Vincent de Paul On 27 September, we celebrate the feast of St Vincent de Paul. He was born in France in 1580 and spent his life loving and serving the poor, especially children. Today, St Vincent de Paul Socie es, which have been named a er him, supply food, money and clothing to those in need.

The following prayers re ect the life of St Vincent: • WHEN YOU WERE HUNGRY, we felt the presence of the Holy Spirit among people in all places. We are blessed by the friendships that grew among us and we received so much more than we gave.

• WHEN YOU WERE THIRSTY, we were touched by your emp ness and we rediscovered our own deeper thirsts as we listened to yours. We came to realise how much God cares for us in the midst of our weaknesses.

• WHEN YOU WERE A STRANGER, we were enriched as you broke down our racial fears and cultural stereotypes to share your life with us. We were blessed when you helped us to move beyond “us” and “them” simply to WE. Blessed will you be today and always in your dedica on to serving the poor and vulnerable.

Prayer Loving God, Help us walk in the footsteps of St Vincent de Paul and look a er those in need.

Guide us to make a di erence by helping others.

Let us bring hope and joy to those less fortunate.

May we put a smile on people’s faces through our ac ons and prayers.

May we always think and pray for others especially those a ected by COVID-19 in Australia and the world.

School Uniform- Shoes A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, ins ls recogni on of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in represen ng their school.

Our school uniform not only provides a sense of belonging and pride of associa on in students at Infant Jesus School, but also promotes the safety and security of students by allowing for the ready iden ca on of students as belonging to our school. Equality is fostered through this Uniform Policy, common to all students.

The Infant Jesus School uniform policy requires children to a end school in black lace up school shoes. Recently children have been wearing black sport shoes in place of school shoes. Please ensure that your child is wearing appropriate uniform at all mes.

Parent Presenta on: Cyber- Safety In Term Four, our school will have the pleasure of hos ng Paul Litherland for a third me. Paul is a renowned cyber-safety speaker and owner of Surf Online Safe. He will be presen ng one parent session, to be held on the 10 November at 6.00pm in the Hall (Week Five). Last year parents thoroughly enjoyed this session and acknowledged the great wealth of exper se shared with them as parents.

Paul will share his experiences as a WA Police O cer in the Technology Crime Inves ga on Unit and speak about the need for children and parents to remember the impact of their digital footprint, maintain levels of privacy when using apps and apply methods to remain safe in an online environment.

Paul’s parent presenta ons will cover a wide range of topics and will last between 1 to 1.5 hours depending on ques ons. Subjects covered may include: • Cyber Bullying – Legisla on surrounding this and how it is a ec ng our children.

• Digital Ci zenship – Where our children are going online, the Apps they are using and the informa on they are sharing.

• Online Footprint – How easy it is to nd children online and what they can do to minimise their risk.

• Social Networking & Networking in general – How the systems work and how to overcome their reach.

• Online Gaming and Website Use – Risks and uses.

• Tips & Tricks – How to keep an eye on your children through so ware and hardware. Easy instruc ons on what we can do to keep them safe.

Paul is very much in demand and has been presen ng to children and parents at a number of schools over the years. Coincidently, Paul’s family are parishioners at the Infant Jesus Parish and Paul’s grandfather helped to build the original Church and school!

We Are Called St Teresa of Avila

At Infant Jesus School we are fortunate to be connected to the Carmelites through our parish. One of the most dis nguished of all Carmelites is St. Teresa of Avila.

St Teresa was born in 1515 in Spain. Her family was prominent, and she grew up in an upper-class Spanish family. When Teresa was fourteen her mother died, and at age een her father had her move into a convent. In the 1500s it was common for young girls from wealthy families to go to a convent to be educated.

When Teresa was 20, she became a nun, but she found it hard to pray at the convent. Teresa couldn't concentrate there because the families of the girls who were going to school at the convent would visit and stay for dinner. She felt she wasted a lot of me at the convent.

Teresa prayed a lot about living a simpler life, and when she was forty years old, she started a new convent called Saint Joseph. Teresa and thirteen nuns lived there and all agreed to live a simple, hard life devoted to God. The sisters in this new convent all decided that would live simply and spend their days studying and praying. The sisters in this new convent wore sandals instead of shoes and habits made of coarse fabric. Teresa wanted the sisters to change their way of thinking. She didn't want them to be worried about clothing and fashion. She thought if they changed what they wore on the outside, it would help them change on the inside. The nuns in this convent also had to be silent as Teresa wanted them to devote themselves to studying and praying about God. She felt that if you talk too much, some mes it is di cult to listen to God.

Throughout her life, Teresa founded seventeen convents all of which had the same rules as the St. Joseph convent. She knew that prayer was very important and she wrote many books about prayer. Her books taught and encouraged people to pray. Teresa was made a Doctor of the Church because the books she wrote were important in helping people learn to pray and become friends with God. Saint Teresa died in 1582 when she was 67 years old.

Saint Teresa of Avila's feast day is October 15.

The Teresian Carmelite family has at its heart the Order of Discalced Carmelites made up of friars, nuns and secular members. These women and men wear sandals to signify their radical commitment to Jesus and so are known as Discalced (barefoot) Carmelites.

The Carmelite nuns came to Australia from Angouleme in France in 1885. The friars came from Ireland in 1948 and there are now over a dozen Carmels throughout the region. The friars have houses in Varroville and St Ives in New South Wales, and Morley in WA. Today, Teresian Carmel has spread throughout the world. The nuns con nue to live in contempla ve communi es in widely di erent situa ons and cultures. The friars live the contempla ve life, but also serve as missionaries and are ac ve in varied ministries - especially those concerned with the spiritual life such as our wonderful priests at Infant Jesus Parish.

Chinese China Day Today we celebrated China Day. This day recognises our close links with our near neighbours and celebrates our partnership with our sister school, Chiang Jiang Experimental Primary School in Hangzhou, China.

A er recess the children learnt about, and explored links between our culture and the Chinese culture. In addi on to the class ac vi es all children par cipated in an incursion where they experienced a Lion Dance or a Chinese Dance.

In addi on to all the lessons throughout the year China Day provides another valuable opportunity to assist our students in developing their knowledge and understanding of the people and cultures of the Asian region.

The Great Vegie Crunch!

At recess on Wednesday our school joined together to crunch, munch and consume vegetables and see how loud we could crunch!

Students learnt how ea ng fruit and vegetables can provide us with nutri ous minerals, vitamins and bre. Students were encouraged to eat vegetables as most West Australian primary school children do a great job of ea ng enough fruit, but only 1 in 6 students are ea ng enough vegetables. Vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and dietary bre that promote healthy growth and development. Ea ng plenty of vegetables also reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Chinese Spring Rolls Last week students in Years 1-6 joined Yáng Lǎo Shī 楊⽼師 in making spring rolls 春卷.

This fun incursion not only allowed the children to experience tradi onal Chinese cooking, but also allowed them to prac se their Chinese language skills as they expressed how they felt about ea ng spring rolls.

The children also met other Chinese people and prac ced their gree ngs and sentences, and learnt the di erent Chinese ingredients and sauces used in authen c Chinese cooking.

A Visit from Chisholm Ex-students, from the class of 2020, Aus n Tu & Tahlia Gonsalves, came and spoke to the Year Four students about a day in the life of a Chisholm student.

Below is a recount from the children in Year Four: A er recess on Thursday 17 September, two Chisholm students Aus n and Tahlia (who were exInfant Jesus School students) arrived at Year Four and spoke to us about life at Chisholm Catholic College. They shared with us the di erent subjects we could study in high school. These include woodwork, cooking and sewing. We learnt the Chisholm rules - if you get 5 strikes, you get an a er- school deten on!

Finally, we watched a video about Chisholm and asked a lot of ques ons. It was a great experience for us. We were very excited to nd out that each student will get their very own locker in high school and that Chisholm o ers many sports.

The person of each individual human being, in his or her material and spiritual needs, is at the heart of Christ’s teaching: that is why the promo on of the human person is the goal of the Catholic school.

The Child Safe Framework and the Code of Conduct are clearly linked as both focus on the safety and well-being of our children.

At Infant Jesus School the purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

The Code applies to sta , students, volunteers, parents and guardians and all who come to our school. The term ‘parents’ includes guardians. Infant Jesus School has a Code of Conduct in place, and as parents, you sign this and agree to this. All sta are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Containers for Change Infant Jesus P&F has now registered for a Scheme ID for Containers for Change. You can take your eligible cans, bo les and containers to your nearest recycling centre and our school can earn 10c for every item deposited. Save this Barcode into your phone/device and scan it at the recycling centre to donate your money to Infant Jesus School. We will have a designated Containers For Change bin at our next major events for parents and students to put their empty bo les/cans/juice boxes etc into.

2021 Disco The 2021 Disco is going to be held on Friday 22nd October in the school hall. We will hold two sessions: Session 1: PK - Year 2 @ 5pm - 6:15pm Session 2: Year 3 - Year 6 @ 6:45 - 8:15pm Tickets will be on sale soon via Flexischools App and EFT. Snack bar with cash sales will be available on the night.
