FROM THE PRINCIPAL Year Six Graduation & Dinner Dance
Pre-Primary Nativity Play
DEAR PARENTS As we prepare for Christmas let us ponder a while on three human beings like ourselves: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We try to imagine how they reacted to the extraordinary events in their lives. In a vulnerable, fragile and beau=ful new-born baby, God’s gi[ of love was made known to us. The baby Jesus challenges us to live with the tenderness he s=rs in our hearts. How will Christmas be this year? Hopefully, it will be a family celebra=on that builds treasures of memories for our children which will include a respect for Christ’s humble entry into our world. As Chris=ans, we are a community that should be known for its compassion, care and love without discrimina=on. Christ came for all people, but especially the disadvantaged; we need to be bearers of his a^tude to the people who come in and out of our lives. The mystery of Christmas is the demonstra=on of the immense love the Father has for humanity and all of crea=on. Because of that love, God our Father has sent the Son to redeem humanity and offer the way to salva=on to each person. It is this that Christmas Day celebrates. We celebrate the birth of our Saviour with our brothers and sisters in the faith around the Table of the Lord at Mass, where we are offered gi[s of peace and hope to strengthen our hearts.

Kindergarten Christmas Concert
We will celebrate Christmas, as well, around another table, along with those we cherish in our lives. If we are fortunate, it will be family that we will join. Friends may invite us to join them and their family at their table. Regardless of where that table may be, Christ will be in our midst, and if we remember this, the =me together will be one of true joy and blessing. When we realise that Christ is with us and who he is, we should not be surprised to experience peace and a special communion among us. This Christmas let us turn towards the life-giving compassion of Jesus Christ, who offers blessings and joys to you, your families, and those who are seeking and searching for meaning in their lives. In this way, we move beyond those narrow expecta=ons and defini=ons o[en imposed on people through ignorance and fear. Saint Paul says in the first reading on Christmas morning to Titus, Jesus came amongst us “for no reason except his own compassion to save us”. The message of Christmas is eternal and offered to all. Where will the gi[ of Christ be born this Christmas; ‣ in the retelling of a well-loved family story? ‣ in a reconciling phone call to an estranged family member or friend? I take this opportunity to wish all God’s blessings on the Year 6 Students who are leaving us this year. They have been an outstanding group of students who we have all watched grow and mature. I have certainly been most impressed with the level of leadership they have offered the school this year. I pray for God’s guidance as they enter the next phase of their learning journey. I would also like to recognise the families who are leaving us at the end of this year. Thank you for all your help, support and involvement with the school over the years.
The Advent Wreath Advent is a season with its own special mood, colours, sounds, words and joys. The colours of Advent are violet, mauve or magenta. An Advent Wreath is a circle, usually of evergreen branches, with four candles placed in or around it (usually three purple and one rose), one for each of the four Sundays of the season. The circular wreath is a sign of God’s loving and never-ending care. During Advent, one candle is lit every week. • The purple candles are for the sorrow we feel for not loving Jesus enough. • The rose candle is for the joy surrounding the impending birth of Jesus. • The evergreen symbolizes God is with us always and will never change. • The circle symbolizes that God is eternal, with no beginning and no end. This Sunday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent where the Rose candle will be lit.

Year Six Graduation & Dinner Dance Thank You to the Year 6 Parent organising commifee consis=ng of Irene Giana^ and Anna Williams, and their many helpers, who spent numerous hours planning and preparing this special evening for the Year 6 students. The organising commifee and the band of helpers did a BRILLIANT job – the children were very spoilt. The food was delicious, music and dancing entertaining were most enjoyable! We also would like to thank the staff who came along for the students, serving them their meal and joining in with the dancing. The children had a fantas=c =me!

We believe that the girls in the NEW original summer dress designed for our school, as well as the boys in their navy shorts will both look very smart and present well for our school.
Staff Farewells It is always difficult and sad at this =me of the year to say farewell to those members of staff who are leaving us at the end of the year. Par=cularly, as each of them have made such a posi=ve impact on the lives of the children the teach, but also the colleagues they work with and the members of the school community. We wish the following staff members all the very best for their future and thanks them enormously for all that they have done at Infant Jesus School in their =me here: •Miss Mitzi Phoebe •Miss Sophie Keeffe •Miss Penny Mulholland •Mrs Dianne Scoble •Mrs Pat King •Mrs Janelle White

Thought for the Week
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Christmas Prayer
Infant Jesus School con=nues to make a las=ng impression on the lives of those who are associated with our beau=ful school. Many of our successful outcomes are achieved because of the fantas=c rela=onships forged between staff, children and their families. I am extremely proud of the endeavours of our staff who work diligently to make our vision become a reality. It is evident that they are deeply commifed to their voca=on and con=nue to support our children to ‘#ExpectGreatThings’.
Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us: for shining star and angel's song, for infant's cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a lifle Child. We behold his glory and are bathed in its radiance.
May God’s blessings be given to you, your family and friends this Christmas, and may He bless all your hopes and aspira=ons for 2020. I wish all of you a very happy and holy Christmas
Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, Wiseman. Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen.
May God’s blessings be given to you, your family and friends this Christmas, and may He bless all your hopes and aspirabons for 2020. I wish all of you a very happy and holy Christmas and I look forward to catching up with you all Paul Hille Principal #ExpectGreatThings

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ CORNER P&F Back to School Picnic Friday 21 February
School Holiday Learning The long summer holiday is the perfect opportunity to explore some of the more crea=ve and magical ways to keep children engaged and focused on learning.
Our Back to School Picnic will be held on Friday 21 February on the school oval. Please put this date into your calendar. This is a fantas=c way to commence the year and welcome new families to the school.
Sure, it's great to give the kids a break from the drudgery of school work over the holidays, but you don't want them forge^ng what they've learned throughout the year. These fun ideas will keep their brains =cking over.
2020 Term DatesTerm 1 Term 1 Monday 3 February - Thursday 9 April Term 2 Wednesday 29 April - 3 July
While no child on the planet wants to do boring maths sheets or spelling quizzes during the break, the holidays are a perfect opportunity for them to keep on learning. It’s a chance to build upon the valuable concepts and skills they’ve gained in school, while also discovering new and cool things beyond the classroom walls. The key is just not to let them pick up on the fact that they are doing anything remotely educa=onal!
Term 3 Tuesday 21 July - Thursday 24 September Term 4 Tuesday 13 October - Friday 11 December
Pupil Free Days 2019 Friday 28 February Tuesday 28 April Monday 20 July Friday 25 September Monday 12 October
Here are some sly and fun ways to slip in learning, when the kids have slipped into thongs and holiday mode.
10
Get messy in the kitchen and bake
Thrill them with tongue twisters
Have the kids been learning about frac=ons in school? Then pull out the baking cups and measuring spoons, because it’s =me to bring those classroom lessons to life! Lifle ones just love ge^ng messy, so why not bake a cake with them? Let them do the scooping, measuring and mixing and they’ll be applying their mathema=cal knowledge, as well as learning about the chemistry of baking. Following a recipe is also good prac=ce for them in following instruc=ons.
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers ... and sent all the children into fits of laughter! Tongue twisters are fun, especially when kids say them as fast as they can, but did you know they are also used as a speech therapy exercise? If your child struggles with reading aloud, or stumbles over words, have him prac=se some tongue twisters in the holidays. Reading may just be a lifle easier for him when school returns.
Build a worm farm
Have some fizzy fun
Did you know worms are great for your garden? They also wiggle, squirm and delight kids to no end! Liflies can make their own compos=ng worm farm. Sure, they might have learnt about recycling and biodegrading at school, but seeing their worms nibble food scraps, that then turn into compost, will have them really grasping the concept. They will also love caring for their worms and learn that even the smallest creature can produce something that contributes to the ecosystem.
What kid doesn’t love to watch things pop, change colour or fizz? Turn your kitchen into a laboratory over the holidays and have some science fun. Kidspot has over ninety one easy science experiments that will wow lifle ones and cement those scien=fic principals they’ve been learning at school. Classic ones like the egg in a bofle or the colourful milk swirl experiment are always a hit.
Pull out a deck of cards Remember how you loved playing Go Fish as a child? Guess what? Your kids will too! Introduce them to the fun world of card games and they’ll be prac=sing their number and pafern recogni=on skills, without even knowing it.
Has your young schoolie been learning the alphabet? Simply paint on some lefers and ask your child to line up their peg characters in alphabe=cal order. Older kids can also prac=se their spelling by forming word forma=ons, and even older kids will probably extend this game further to words we wished they didn’t know (!).
Give their brains a screen time workout
Go day tripping
Tempted to ban screens during the holidays, for fear of the kids doing absolutely nothing else? DON’T! So long as you monitor what they consume and the =me they spend glued to them, handheld devices can be a mobile classroom. There are loads of cool educa=onal apps out there, with some even being designed to help parents manage the holiday learning void.
Pack the day packs, drink bofles and sunscreen and go exploring in your city. Day tripping is not only fun, it’s also a great way for kids to discover new things about the world they live in. Check out if there are any exhibi=ons on to do with topics the kids have been learning at school, or just see where the day takes you! You never know what cool things are down a lane or in a big city park.
Make alphabet peg dolls
Teach them to knit Don’t let all that handwri=ng improvement over the past year go to the wayside over the break. Kni^ng, hand sewing and croche=ng are fun skills for liflies to learn that will also exercise their fine motor skills and help to build finger dexterity. If your kids are too young for needles, try this fun finger kni^ng which will see them make yarn chains that can be turned into friendship bracelets! Cute.
11
Rock their world with riddles Kids love riddles but what they don’t realise (while giggling their heads off!), is that they are actually giving their brains quite a workout. Riddles require us to think outside of the square and find solu=ons to problems that aren’t obvious. When kids do brain teasers or riddles, they are opening up new thought processes that will help to develop their problem solving skills.
Visit the local library Nothing turns kids off reading more than being forced to do so (think school readers - snore). But when they discover a book or author they love, the joy of reading is born. Encourage them to spend the holidays engrossed in the pages of a book (or 10) by visi=ng your local library. Let them choose whatever they would like to read, or learn about, and watch their love of reading blossom.
Grow some food Teaching your kids to grow their own food is a fun way for them to learn about where food really comes from. Building a veggie patch, plan=ng a fruit tree or cul=va=ng a herb garden are all ways for kids to grow edible crops that the whole family can enjoy. Being able to bring their homegrown produce to the dinner table will give kids a real sense of accomplishment and, with any luck, a new apprecia=on for food.
Play board games and puzzles Board games like Scrabble, Monopoly, Pic=onary or even Snakes and Ladders, are fantas=c for exercising lifle minds. Pull out a boxed game and your kids will be prac=sing their numbers, lefers and shape recogni=on skills, improving their hand-eye coordina=on, or honing in on their visual percep=on and colour iden=fica=on skills. Plus, board games are the perfect, "Mu-um, we're bored" an=dote on holiday rainy days.
Go on holidays! Whether you head to the coast, country or to another city, going away is one giant excursion for kids, minus the worksheets. Take the =me to chat to them about where they are, what’s interes=ng about their surrounds and explore the local area. Don’t get too hung up though on the educa=onal experience, when everyone just wants to relax. Just going somewhere different is enough to get their lifle minds firing and asking ques=ons. Also, remember that half the fun of a trip starts before you get there. Involve your child in the holiday planning by looking at a map to find ci=es, tourist afrac=ons and to es=mate distances. hcps://www.kidspot.com.au/

CLASS NEWS
Music News This has been a very busy and exci=ng term in Music. The children worked very hard to learn, memorise and perfect their songs and choreography during their Music classes, in prepara=on for their musical numbers for the Christmas Concert, which took place on Tuesday evening. It was a joy to see the enthusiasm and effort that all the children have put in this term. The smaller dance groups really enjoyed rehearsing their extra concert dance numbers each week, and also the group of budding Year Six actors who were successful in audi=oning for the opening scene of the Christmas Concert. They rehearsed with Miss Condipodero each week to work on the staging and blocking of their scenes. What a wonderful way to end the 2019 school year! Congratula=ons to each and every student on your wonderful performances on Tuesday evening, what talented students we have here at Infant Jesus School. I am incredibly proud of you all!
Choir News The Infant Jesus School Choir finished off the year so beau=fully with their final 2019 performance at the Christmas Concert. They really enjoyed being able to lead the school community in song and share in the spirit of Christmas on Tuesday evening. They have put so much hard work and effort into being part of the Infant Jesus School Choir this year and have shown an incredible amount of commitment and enthusiasm. I am very proud of how far you have all come this year and I look forward to seeing you all con=nue to shine and flourish in 2020. I wish all of the depar=ng Year 6 Choir students the best of luck and hope that you all have the opportunity to con=nue your singing and musical journey into high school. Congratula=ons to you all!

i-Perform News

The Year One students have all been par=cipa=ng in iPerform Dance classes this term with Miss Condipodero. On Monday 2 December, they were given the opportunity to perform their choreographed dances for their peers, their Year Six buddies and their parents and families. The four dierent Year One groups have par=cipated in i-Perform Dance classes each week for the past eight weeks, which involved dance warm-ups, stretches, and learning a fun choreographed dance! Congratula=ons to all of the Year One students for performing so wonderfully and with so much enthusiasm, you are all superstars! It was so lovely to see the excitement of the children each week in their i-Perform sessions. Thank you to parents for organising costumes for the children and to all who were able to afend the performances on Monday and giving such thunderous applause! Miss Claire Condipodero Music Teacher

Sport News Despite the heat we have s=ll managed a lot of fun in Sport this term! The Year 5 children were fortunate to take part in a basketball clinic conducted by the Perth Lynx Women’s Basketball team. The children first par=cipated in some basketball fundamentals followed by a modified basketball game. The players also spoke to the children about what it takes to be a professional athlete and the commitment to the game. Go Perth Lynx! The Year Four children have just finished their four-week tennis program with Tiny Tots Tennis. The children loved playing a variety of tennis games all whilst learning the valuable skills of the game: footwork, forehand, volley and backhand. Even in the hot weather the children gave 100% to each session and cannot wait to con=nue their tennis next year. The Year 6’s finished their PE life at Infant Jesus taking part in Orienteering. Controls were placed around the school and the children had to locate these controls using their mapping and compass skills. Using the compass was definitely a challenge, but it was great to see their dedica=on to learning this new skill. This term the Year 5’s enjoyed their =me learning Volleyball. The children had fun learning the three skills: dig, set and serve. Some lessons were definitely a challenge, but by the end of the program they looked like they had been playing for years! Our early childhood year levels have been amazing in this heat. When we managed to get to the oval, the children took part in modified soccer and t-ball games. The purpose of these games was to learn the importance of team play and sportsmanship. At various =mes it has been too hot to go outside so the children have taken part in some dancing and classroom ac=vi=es. Last Friday, we celebrated our final swimming training with a sumptuous breakfast back at school. Our Friday morning swimming squad commenced training bright and early at 7am at Bayswater Waves. To commend them for their hard work and determina=on, a yummy breakfast was wai=ng for them in the school hall! A big thank you to Mrs Ienco for preparing the amazing food and to Mr Hille for cooking the sausages on the barbeque. What a great way to end the year! Swimming training will re-commence in Term 1, Week 3 on Friday mornings, 7:30am at Bayswater Waves. Let’s get swimming! What a year it has been in sport and I can’t wait to do it all again next year! Remember to always ‘Love Your Sport’. Lauren Jenkins Physical Educa=on Teacher

Science and Health News Year 2 Health In Health this term, the students con=nued inves=ga=ng the ways ‘Health Messages’ and ‘Health Slogans’ are communicated in the media and how they can influence personal choices. We’ll explored medicines and poisons and devised a poster for parents that demonstrated appropriate ways to ensure the safety of young children. Finally, we addressed road, water and outdoor safety which helped to develop the children’s knowledge in readiness for the holidays.
Year 1 Physical Science This term, the Year Ones have been inves=ga=ng how light and sound are produced by a range of sources. We conducted experiments that demonstrated how vibra=ons and sound waves move through the air and made our own musical instruments using everyday objects. We learned that sounds can be loud or so[, high and low depending on how the vibra=ons are moving. The children also learned that light can be both come from a natural and ar=ficial source and how we use light in our everyday lives.

International Day of People with Disability Jesus welcomed everyone at all =mes and always recognised the uniqueness of every person. There are many stories and demonstra=ons of this from the life and work of Jesus. The following example is from the gospel of John. ‘As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” (John 9: 1-3) On the 3 December we celebrated Interna=onal Day of People with Disability within our classrooms. We believe that is important that the children have an understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contribu=ons. To highlight this day children par=cipated in various ac=vi=es including • listening to a story called “Fergus and Delilah” which was about a lifle boy who had Au=sm and always
• • • • • • • • • • • •
played on his own. A lifle girl named Delilah tried to play with Fergus, but it wasn’t un=l her fourth afempt that she managed to join in. They became good friends. brainstorming the quali=es of a good friend and deciding that accep=ng people’s uniqueness and differences was of par=cular importance. illustra=ng the quali=es of a good friend on a friendship flower. discussing different ways they could be an inclusive friend. sharing stories about our family members who live with a disability and lis=ng ways we ensure we include them in our lives. crea=ng short videos explaining how children believe they are an inclusive friend. watching a video about what it means to have a learning difficulty. crea=ng a acros=c poems for the word “INCLUSIVE” and designing posters on Pic Collage to showcase the acros=c poem. discussing the difference between learning and physical disabili=es and sharing what it’s like to have Dyslexia. researching the Paralympic Games and crea=ng a presenta=on about a specific type of game in the Paralympics. discussing and learning that we shouldn’t focus on what people with disabili=es can’t do, but what they can do. acknowledging that people with disabili=es need a lifle extra help to achieve their dreams and we can be suppor=ve and inclusive. a discussion with Father Greg about how people with disabili=es can make our world a befer place and the Personal Advocacy Mass which is held every third Thursday.
