FROM THE PRINCIPAL School Christmas Concert This year our School Christmas concert will go ahead as ‘normal’.

Year Six Graduation This year we have decided to do things a liYle different…

Dear Parents Every now and then, we all need a liYle ‘stop and ponder’ moment, just to take stock of how our life is going along. The following few lines might give us a “ponder” or two on an all too familiar topic: “We’re too busy it seems to take Lme for dreams or to go for a walk in the sun. Too busy today, no Lme for play too busy just geSng things done. Too busy to watch the children play we don’t hear half the things they say. Will our hearts be filled with misgivings, when we learn we’ve been too busy for living?” It is true that the more we expect of life the busier it becomes and the more complicated and cluYered it gets. Inevitably, this leads to less <me we have available to appreciate the good things we have in life. Confucius definitely had it right when he said, “Life is really simple, but we insist in making it complicated.” ` How much of our business and life cluYer is brought about by our being caught up in the consumer culture that focuses on making money and then spending it on what we think we need. What were once considered to be luxuries are now seen as necessi<es and, we scramble to maintain and pay for all these new “necessi<es”.

3

Orientation Day This year the students and their families will learn who their 2021 teacher is…

During Advent, we should be making an extra effort to keep Jesus at the forefront of our thoughts and listening to him, rather than the world. Instead of browsing the myriad of catalogues that will pour into our leYerboxes, let us put them aside and take a passage from the bible or our Advent booklet to reflect on. “While we are planning gids for our family and friends, let us not forget our gids for the poor and to make <me for the lonely. Let us start and end each day with a few moments talking to and listening to God. Let these ac<ons be our Christmas gid to him.” Hopefully, our homes will have an Advent focus somewhere within the rooms to help promote the true message of Christmas.

An unfortunate reality of life today is that the new things or “necessi<es” that we forget about what is really important in our lives. There is a danger that our family life can be affected, for at the end of a busy day each family member is both <red and overs<mulated: each person is seeking love in the family as well as healing and emo<onal nourishment.

The Four Weeks of Advent During the first two weeks of Advent we light the first two purple candles. The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday. On this day we celebrate that our wai<ng for the birth of Jesus on Christmas day is almost over. Rose is a liturgical colour that is used to signify joy, so we light the single pink candle on the third Sunday of Advent.

However, all too oden the well is dry! Weariness, frustra<on and irrita<on boil to the surface and family conversa<on can become biYer and sharp instead of gentle and kind. It’s a true case of not being able to give what we do not have, even when it is our loved ones who are in need of our giving. A number of years ago there was a bumper s<cker that said, “Jesus is coming back soon, look busy!” When we look at the Gospels that tell of Jesus’ life, it does appear that he was a busy person. However, Jesus was also a person who celebrated life with enthusiasm from the beginning of his public life at the marriage at Cana to ader his Resurrec<on, when some Apostles came ashore ader fishing all night and found Jesus cooking breakfast for them.

Then on the fourth Sunday of Advent, the final purple candle is lit to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait expectantly for the soon-coming birth of the King of Kings. Tradi<onally, each of the four Advent candles have a deeper meaning. The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolises Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that Jesus is coming. The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolises Faith with the “Bethlehem Candle” reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolises Joy with the “Shepherd’s Candle” reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolises Peace with the “Angel’s Candle” reminding us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

Our “wants” and “desires” can cause our life to rush past us. Probably, we all need to spend more <me on ourselves to ensure our physical and spiritual welfare that: “… Our hearts will not be filled with misgivings, and we’ve not been too busy for living.” This is certainly a promise and commitment I am going to make to myself moving forward!

Advent Advent has commenced and the weeks un<l Christmas will pass quickly. We should all desire to use this <me well, to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child. “… let our every thought, word and deed aim at doing what is pleasing in Your sight”.

We are very grateful to Mrs Ardrian Gonsalves, Mrs Maria Bellesini, and the organising commi[ee who have kindly offered to coordinate this event and have done an amazing job!

I would like to par<cularly to congratulate and thank Mrs Marisa Gulluni and Mrs Maria Bellesini for their service to the Infant Jesus School P&F Associa<on. I would also like to acknowledge the P&F Associa<on for the $18,000 cheque we received on the night. This money will be used to purchase Fac<on Tents for each of the fac<ons, reading resources for the classroom, Chinese resources for Mandarin and manipula<ves for the junior primary classes. We thank Mrs Jenny Allpike for remaining the Treasurer for 2021 and Mrs Vanessa GaS nomina<ng as Secretary for 2021.

Orientation Day This year the students and their families will learn who their 2021 teacher is on Wednesday 9 December. On that day, the children will "move up" to their new classroom and spend around an hour with their new teacher. This will give them an opportunity to realise that they know many other students and gain a sense of the feel of the classroom. As men<oned previously, many factors are taken into considera<on when crea<ng class lists. It is a huge task and is not something that is taken lightly. Fortunately, our Infant Jesus School staff are truly amazing, and parents are assured that no maYer who their child's teacher may be - they will be focused on ensuring the best possible outcomes for each and every child in their care. Our staff also work and plan together across year levels and our children have numerous opportuni<es to work with other children in their year level. Each school year is a new start for everyone and a chance to begin afresh. Thank you for assis<ng in this <me of transi<on by showing your child you trust in their ability to move towards 2021 posi<vely and for helping them to focus on all the wonderful opportuni<es change offers - this builds resiliency.

Student Reports Semester Two student reports will be available to parent on Friday 11 December from 3.30pm. Parents are reminded that this report is a summary of what has been achieved throughout the second semester of 2020. Students can be commended on their efforts throughout the semester and we thank the parents who have supported us by ensuring that students are con<nuing in their learning and development as a whole person. We encourage parents to take the <me to discuss the Semester Two Report with their child/children and, if there are areas of concern, to make an appointment to see the class teacher.

Thanksgiving Mass – Wednesday 9 December 2020 On Wednesday, 9 December we will celebrate the end of the school year with a Thanksgiving Mass. The Mass will commence at 9.00am and all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 will be aYending. This is a formal gathering of the school community where we give thanks for all that has taken place in 2020 and wish our Year 6 students and staff who are leaving all the best for the future.

Staff Farewells The end of a school year is also a <me where we have to say a few goodbyes to members of our community. I would like to acknowledge the following staff who will be leaving us at the end of 2020: • • • • •

New Staff We welcome to the school the following NEW Staff members: • Miss Sophie Keeffe Year 6 • Mr Alexander Elliot Year 5 • Miss Jade Rotondo Year 4 • Mr John Haydon Year 3 • Miss Fay Yang Chinese/Mandarin Teacher

School Uniform A reminder to all parents that all students are expected to abide by the Infant Jesus School Uniform Policy. This isn’t open to interpreta<on and we do not want parents purchasing different varia<ons of items of the school uniform. For example, some students are not wearing the correct Navy-Blue Shorts to school, as they have been purchased from somewhere other than our uniform supplier. One of the main reasons why we changed the school uniform this year is because we had so many varia<ons of the boys’ shorts as parents were buying these from different places e.g. K-Mart, Big W etc. The only place parents are able to purchase the Infant Jesus School Uniform is at One World Uniforms in North Perth. Please ensure that your child has the correct uniform for the start of 2021 school year.

Prayer for the Week This Advent we once again prepare for Christmas. While we look forward to remembering and celebra<ng the birth of Jesus, we also take this <me to prepare our hearts and minds as we wait for the coming of the Christ Child. Just as we all look forward to the end of the school year; we also look towards Christ’s coming with excitement and with joy. Heavenly Father, We remember Joseph and Mary as they awaited the birth of their child and prepared for the journey to Bethlehem. May we learn to trust in God like Mary and Joseph. We recognise that people of different na<ons, cultures and religious tradi<ons will come together to search out new ways of living in peace built on jus<ce. We ask for your guidance as we learn to wait and listen for the good news of the birth of our Saviour this Advent. We offer this prayer through Jesus Christ your Son and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Thought for the Week

Best wishes

“The best of all giks around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped.”

WE ARE CALLED 13

Traditions During Advent, the Church uses the symbol of the Jesse Tree to trace the family line of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, from Crea<on to his birth. The Jesse Tree reminds people of Biblical characters and events that prepared God’s people for the birth of Jesus. It helps people connect the custom of decora<ng Christmas trees to the events leading to Jesus’ birth. Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas tradi<on and first started in medieval <mes. People decorate a Jesse Tree with ornaments that represent the people, prophesies, and events leading up to the birth of Jesus. The ornaments of the Jesse Tree tell the story of God in the Old Testament, connec<ng the Advent season with the faithfulness of God un<l the coming of the Messiah on Christmas day. Crea<ng the Jesse Tree reminds Jesus’ followers of the people who were faithful to God in their wai<ng for the Messiah. Some Jesse Trees have more informa<on (symbols), other have less to trace the family line of Jesus. On the Jesse Tree below, each of the symbols from led to right, boYom to top traces the family line of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, from crea<on to his birth. The line of Jesus family can be found in many books in the Bible including the old testament books (eg. Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Ruth, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah and Jonah) and in the gospels (eg. MaYhew and Luke). BoYom row (L-R) ★ The World represen<ng CreaLon (from Genesis) ★ An Apple Tree represen<ng Adam and Eve (from Genesis) ★ A rainbow represen<ng Noah’s Ark (from Genesis) ★ An empty tent represen<ng God’s promise to Abraham (from Genesis) ★ A ram represen<ng Isaac (from Genesis) ★ A ladder represen<ng Joseph (father of Jacob) (from Genesis) ★ A coat of many colours represen<ng Jacob (from Genesis) ★ A burning bush represen<ng Moses (from Exodus) Fourth row (L-R) ★ A lamb represen<ng the Israelites and the Passover (from Exodus) ★ The stone tablets represen<ng the 10 Commandments (from Exodus) ★ The horn represen<ng Joshua and the fall of Jericho (from Joshua) ★ The corn represen<ng Ruth (from Ruth) ★ The star of David represen<ng King David (from Samuel) ★ An ancient castle represen<ng Solomon’s temple (from Kings)

CLASS NEWS

Kindergarten Class News What a busy term we have had! Looking back, it’s incredible to think that we have incorporated so many events in just eight weeks. Kindy is such a great place to be! Week Two of the term started with our Book Week celebra<ons. As reading is such an important part of the Kindy program, we invited the librarians from the City of Bayswater library to treat the children to a storytelling session. During the week, the children chose their favourite book, shared it with their friends and dressed up in their favourite character. Book Week assembly saw a range of fun and happy children roaming around the school disguised as book characters. With the con<nua<on of “Barnaby Bear traveling around the world in his hot air balloon’ from Term Three, the children discovered countries around the world. Barnaby sent the children a leYer outlining the country’s ag, language, transport, popula<on, famous landmarks and ar<sts. The children received their own passports so they could follow Barnaby on his travels. His ďŹ rst stop was Australia đ&#x;‡Śđ&#x;‡ş . He con<nued his travels through Asia stopping in the Philippines đ&#x;‡ľđ&#x;‡ and India đ&#x;‡Žđ&#x;‡ł , Europe visi<ng Italy đ&#x;‡Žđ&#x;‡š , Ireland đ&#x;‡Žđ&#x;‡Ş , Croa<a đ&#x;‡đ&#x;‡ˇ , Greece đ&#x;‡Źđ&#x;‡ˇ , France đ&#x;‡Ťđ&#x;‡ˇ and Egypt đ&#x;‡Şđ&#x;‡Ź , before deciding which place was his favourite! This unit of work was celebrated by a mul<cultural dress up day and shared lunch which was delicious. The school disco was next on the agenda, it was so much fun! With the COVID restric<ons, the disco took on a dierent format. The disco was held in the school hall and supervised by a few parents, which highlighted children’s independence skills and their ability to dance and have fun with their friends in such a conďŹ dent manner. We have exposed the Kindy children to the importance of having fun, we are so proud of our Kindy children! In exploring our world this term, we have focused on numbers we rely on every day, such as numbers on clocks, leYerboxes, road signs, cars, boats, train sta<ons, etc. Through inves<ga<ons the children focussed on numbers for coun<ng and measuring, and the value numbers have and their order on a number line. We discovered that numbers are dierent to leYers and they are both important in our learning and everyday living. As we come to the end of the year, we focus on the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Our Kindy Christmas concert was a celebra<on of the presence of Jesus within us, our learning and our rela<onships with each other. Our teachers always tell us how AMAZING, CLEVER and PERFECT we are, and we truly believe we are! Merry Christmas and THANY YOU to all our beau<ful parents for their constant support ... we are all in this together!

Pre-Primary Class News As the school year draws to a close, we reflect on all the learning that the students have taken part in and we are so very proud of their achievements. It has been truly amazing to see the students flourish with their reading and wri<ng skills. This was especially apparent when we as a class read the dream<me story “How the Birds Got Their Colours” and the students were able to use a number of reading and comprehension strategies to help them read large sec<ons of the story. It was also very exci<ng to see the detailed oral and wriYen retell they independently created of the story. Many of the students could write a number of sentences, where they included high frequency words, punctua<on and they were able to hear and write many of the sounds in each of the words. In Mathema<cs, the students have had so much fun experimen<ng with different types of balance scales and having the opportunity to weigh objects. They were surprised at how many cubes heavy par<cular objects were. It was lovely to see some students count ‘WEIGH’ past one hundred in order to discover how heavy an object was. Amazing coun<ng skills! We are currently learning about the significance of Christmas. The students have listened to, watched and re-enacted “The Na<vity” story and are in the process of illustra<ng and retelling the key events. The children are so excited about Christmas that we have been coun<ng down the days. Twenty-two days to go! Thank you for such a wonderful year Pre-Primary boys and girls, we are going to miss you.
