FROM THE PRINCIPAL National Child Protection Week We are celebra#ng it in all our Parishes this week.

First Holy Eucharist Last Saturday, saw the first group of communicants receive Jesus for the first #me in Holy Communion.

Dear Parents This Sunday marks the end of NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK. We are celebra#ng it in all our parishes this week. It reminds us of the commitment by our Archbishop to make every part of the Perth Archdiocese safe for children and how we can all help to make this happen. We read in the Gospels about the tender love Jesus had for children and how he made them in their simplicity and trus`ulness as a model for adults in their rela#onship with God, and how we should open ourselves to God’s love. Let us hear again some of the things Jesus did say about children. In Luke, Chapter 9 the disciples were arguing about who would be the greatest in the Kingdom of God. Jesus brought a licle child beside him and said, “Whoever welcomes this licle child welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, for the least among you is truly the greatest.” In Luke, Capter 8, people were preven#ng licle children from running to Jesus. He replied, “Let the children come to me and do not stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” His message was clear, simplicity and trust opens the heart to God. He went on. “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child, will not enter it.”

Learning Journeys Parents are reminded that the class Learning Journeys will take place next Monday a^ernoon…

Again, Jesus spoke of the joy of bringing a child into the world. We read in John Chapter 16 “A woman in childbirth is in distress because her #me is at hand, but a^er her child is born she no longer remembers her suffering because of the great joy a child is born into the world. Jesus wants us to trust him that our suffering now can be turned into joy.”

This weekend we turn our acen#on to the second group of children who will receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist. A couple of years ago, Pope Benedict had a ques#on and answer session with a group of First Communion children. When the Pope was asked about his memories of his First Communion, his response contained the following. “I understood that Jesus had entered my heart, he had actually visited me. And with Jesus, God himself was with me. And I realised that this is a gi^ of love that is truly worth more than all other things that life can give.”

Let us not forget the fury in Jesus words if a child is led astray or harmed or, as we recall this week, abused. We read in Machew Chapter 18, “If anyone should cause one of these licle ones who believe in me to stumble or fall into sin, it would be becer for him to be thrown into the depths of the sea with a large millstone around his neck.” Jesus who blessed children when they came to him was outraged that they could be harmed spiritually, physically, sexually or in any way.

Holy Communion is an incredible gi^ and the amazing thing about the gi^ is that it can be unwrapped #me and #me again in our lives and every #me we do this, the gi^ will be brand new. Each new unwrapping gives us the opportunity to gain a becer understanding of what the gi^ actually is. In 2003, Pope John Paul II published a lecer on the Eucharist which gave a clear insight into the nature of the gi^: “We talk of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, because Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist is a presence in the fullest sense, where Jesus is wholly and en#rely present. The Consecra#on at Mass changes the whole substance of the bread into the Body of Christ and the whole substance of the wine in the substance of his blood.”

We have heard these warnings before and need to respond to the challenge with true commitment. This is a #me for reflec#on to see what else may be required by all of us in our work for God’s kingdom of love and peace.

For us, who have so many distrac#ons in life, we might some#mes forget about God, forget about the Eucharist, forget to pray each day, forget to acend Mass. First Communion day for a family member, can be a #me of renewal for all family members, perhaps a #me to unwrap the gi^ again and discover an understanding that is truly relevant to where we are in life. The Eucharist is the Sacrament of God’s love and love is something that all of us can use plenty of.

We reflect that children all belong to a family whatever difficulty they may be facing. Modern society is not all that kind to families today. They o^en need the help of other families to cope. Specialist services are needed, but the closest families are other families in the neighbourhood who provides help in a non-judgmental way. We need to make our parishes stronger Chris#an communi#es and we need to listen to the voices of our young people so we can be united as members of the Body of Christ, the Church. Its lifeblood is the lifeblood of Jesus himself.

First Holy Eucharist (Communion) Last Saturday, saw the first group of communicants receive Jesus for the first #me in Holy Communion. This was a very solemn and reverent occasion and I thank ALL families for the way they prepared their child/ren for the mass. It was a really special celebra#on. Well Done to all.

The children, their families and their teachers have been preparing for many weeks for this important occasion. The Sacrament of the Eucharist is one of the three Sacraments of Ini#a#on in our Catholic faith – the other two are Bap#sm and Confirma#on. The Eucharist is the con#nual celebra#on of our Chris#an life.

✴ Children are involved in making choices which

We thank our Parish Sacramental Coordinators, Mrs Faith Rico, Mrs Sue Goodwin and Mrs Angela Youens. These ladies have worked #relessly to ensure all our children can receive the Sacraments even in light of the various restric#ons that have been placed on the celebra#on of Mass etc. They, along with Fr Greg have done an amazing job and WE are very grateful for all their efforts.

✤ To allow children to take responsibility and be

✤ To enhance and support parent communica#on

In Holy Communion, Jesus comes to each one of us. Sharing this mystery together makes us one with each other and one with Jesus. We are joined in a special way with Jesus and the family of God. For many of our Year 4 students, these coming weekends will be a special #me when Jesus comes to be one with them as they con#nue on their faith journey and grow into strong and loving people in the family of God.

Parents are reminded that the class Learning Journeys will take place next Monday a^ernoon from 3.30pm – 6.00pm

As a school community, we keep in our prayers the students and their families from the school and parish who will be receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist over the coming weekends and celebrate the communion it brings to us all. Our final group of communicants will receive Holy Communion on Saturday 19 September.

Sacrament of Confirmation The Archbishop, last Friday, gave schools and parish communi#es the ‘green light’ to go ahead with Confirma#on this year. We have had to try and work around Fr Greg’s calendar as well as other events and Sacraments planned for this year. Therefore, the following has been arranged for the Sacrament of Confirma#on:

Learning Journeys At Infant Jesus our goal is to develop a community which fosters life-long learning and an aptude which promotes achievement of full poten#al in an environment embedded in our Gospel values. Our Learning Journey session enables parents, children and the school to come together to support, share and celebrate each child’s learning.

Staffing News Miss Melissa Myles has been appointed to the posi#on of AcOng Assistant Principal for 2021 – 2022. This is an exci#ng #me for Melissa and the school as she steps up into a leadership role at Infant Jesus School. Melissa will bring a lot of experience and exper#se to the role and I am looking to see how the school con#nues to develop under the leadership of Clare Moffat (Principal), Frank Colangelo (Assistant Principal) and Melissa Myles (Assistant Principal). Congratula#ons and well done Melissa. In other staffing news, Mrs Renee Babac (nee Allegreco) will be leaving Infant Jesus School at the end of the year. Renee started her teaching career at Infant Jesus School and has completed eight years of service to the Infant Jesus School community. Renee has accepted a posi#on at Padbury Catholic School as an Upper Primary Teacher and Lead Teacher in IT. Renee will be a fantas#c asset to Padbury Catholic School and we wish her all the best of luck. We welcome Miss Jade Rotondo to the Infant Jesus Staff and community. Jade is currently teaching at Our Lady’s Assump#on School in Dianella and has come highly regarded by the Principal and staff of OLA. We look forward to Jade joining our community in 2021 and I am sure all she will be made to feel most welcome. Miss Sophie Keeffe will be returning to Infant Jesus School in 2021 a^er spending a year at Sacred Heart in Thornlie. Mrs Amanda Edwards will also be returning to school a^er the birth of her second child, Rory. We look forward to both these ladies returning the Infant Jesus School community.

Growing as God Wants: Human Sexuality A Parent Informa#on Mee#ng will be held on Tuesday 15 September from 6.30pm to 8.00pm in the School Hall, during which the Centre for Life, Marriage and Family (An Agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth) will present to parents the content of the program. It is expected that all Year 5 parents acend this presenta#on and Year 6 parents who were unable to acend in 2019. If you are unable to acend, please contact your class teacher. As part of our Religious Educa#on and Health programmes, the Year Five and Six children will be covering aspects of human sexuality and development during Semester Two. O^en Year Five and Six children are aware of these topics from a variety of sources. To ensure that their understanding is accurate, these topics need to be taught. However, our role is to support the family in this area, and it is hoped you will discuss this with your child. In Year Six the Religious Educa#on Unit, “Growing as God Wants: Human Sexuality”, introduces to the children ways in which Jesus always expressed love and goodness through his body. It then presents how he makes his followers ‘new creatures’ through Bap#sm so that they can do the same. The Rite of Bap#sm and symbols used during the Bap#smal ceremony will also be explored.

From My Readings This Week…… Strategies for Successfully Raising Boys

One of the keys to paren#ng success is the ability to adapt strategies and principles to suit the gender of the children in your family. That’s easy if you share the same gender or were surrounded by siblings of that gender in your family origin. It’s not so easy if your experience of children of a par#cular gender is precy thin, or you just can’t fathom what makes a gender #ck. Here are some essen#al strategies to help you successfully parent the boy in your life.

Understand their psychology

Many boys feel uncomfortable standing out from the crowd and will go to extraordinary lengths to blend in – wearing the same clothes, dumbing down rather than standing above the pack, and enjoying the same interests as their peers. The need to fit in impacts so much of their behaviour and aptudes.

6

Work with their physiology Boys are constantly figh#ng their physiology. Differing maturity rates affect boys’ school readiness, their transi#on to secondary school and their transi#on into adulthood. There’s no doubt – it takes longer to grow a boy!

Crack their communicaOon code

Boys will respond if the communica#on method suits them. Time and space are important factors to use in your favour. The use of banter, shoulder-to-shoulder communica#on and movement are some other ways to get young male conversa#onal clams to open up.

Match their relaOonal style

Some boys like to talk, others like to share an ac#vity, some like you as the adult to do something for them. Others are very kinaesthe#c and love to be cuddled and hugged, while some just love gi^s and mementos. Work out the rela#onal preferences of the males in your life and you’ll discover a wonderful way to build or deepen your rela#onship.

Build a management repertoire on respect and fairness

Respec`ul, fair treatment are essen#als if you want to gain a boy’s coopera#on. Many learn from experience rather than the fine words of parents so be prepared to allow them to learn some of life’s lesson the hard way. They also respond favourably to visual measures such as gestures, charts and lists as they play to their strengths and take the authority away from you.

Know that confidence is key

Helping boys feel confident can be tricky. It’s part environmental – that is, allowing them to spend #me in places and ac#vi#es where they experience success. Part personal – that is, they respond to encouragement and private, descrip#ve praise (o^en rejec#ng public praise) and part pa#ence, as it takes longer for many boys to find their feet.

Play to their learning strengths

Knowing a boy’s learning strengths can be the way to unlock his learning poten#al. My own son was not a great reader, but his visual acuity and oracy skills were excep#onal. By allowing him to play to these strengths, while at the same #me working on his literacy, he was able to leave school seeing himself with an abundance of confidence as a learner.

Build their emoOonal smarts

Boys educa#on expert Ian Lillico believes that much of boys’ aggression that plays out at home and at school stems from a denial of their feelings. It’s essen#al to help boys recognise and give voice to their emo#ons safely and in healthy ways so they don’t act out angrily, aggressively and violently.

Defuse their digital focus

The current crop of digital devices and online games that have many boys glued to screens with zombie-like expressions on their faces play right into the hands of boys. The need for balance between real world ac#vi#es and the digital world has never been greater than it is for our boys right now.

Build an a[tude of respect

Create conversa#ons with boys about respec`ul treatment – what it looks like and feels like. Pick them up on disrespec`ul aptudes and behaviour they may show toward others, including siblings. Respec`ul rela#onships need to be a high priority when raising boys. Our daughters depend on it.

7

Coach boys in interpersonal skills

Girls are primed for interpersonal skill development while boys o^en need to be taught the intricacies and nuances of working with and rela#ng to others. Give young boys scripts for making friends, asking a teacher for help or how to solve a problem with a mate. Coach teenage boys in the finer points of talking with adults, speaking in different situa#ons and give them ideas about how they should speak to and treat girls.

In closing

Research tells us that paren#ng boys can be more problema#c than paren#ng girls, par#cularly in the early and primary school years. With a solid understanding of what makes a boy #ck, a toolkit at your disposal of boy-friendly communica#on, management and confidence-building techniques, the confidence to support your boy as a con#nuous learner and a willingness to coach him personal and respec`ul rela#onship skills you will be well-prepared to give your son the support and paren#ng he needs to become a fine and successful young man.

Prayer for the Week Child ProtecOon Week 2020 Gracious God, you love and care for all of your children, especially the smallest and most vulnerable. We entrust to you the lives of children and adults at risk who have been sexually abused, and whose trust and innocence have been destroyed. Help us to hear their cries of pain and to take responsibility for those whose lives have been broken. Help us to recognise the hurt felt by those wounded by abuse, and the failure to be heard. We pray that with the help of your grace communi#es and families will find understanding and support, so that now and in the future their wounds may be healed, and they may find las#ng peace. Let your grace and love fall gently now upon our children, giving them the inner strength, peace and resilience to seek out assistance when required. We ask this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Thought for the Week

A gentle word, a kind look, a good-natured smile can work wonders and accomplish miracles. Best wishes

He will be presen#ng one parent session, to be held on the 16 September at 6.30pm in the Hall (Week Nine). Last year parents thoroughly enjoyed this session and acknowledged the great wealth of exper#se shared with them as parents. Paul will share his experiences as a WA Police Officer in the Technology Crime Inves#ga#on Unit and speak about the need for students and parents to remember the impact of their digital footprint, maintain levels of privacy when using apps and apply methods to remain safe in an online environment. Paul’s parent presenta#on will cover a wide range of topics and will last between 1 to 1.5hours depending on ques#ons. Subjects covered may include: • Cyber Bullying – Legisla#on surrounding this and how it is affec#ng our children. • Digital Ci#zenship – Where our children are going online, the Apps they are using and the informa#on they are sharing. • Online Footprint – How easy it is to find children online and what they can do to minimise their risk. • Social Networking & Networking in general – How the systems work and how to overcome their reach. • Online Gaming and Website Use – Risks and uses. • Tips & Tricks – How to keep an eye on your children through so^ware and hardware. Easy instruc#ons on what we can do to keep them safe.

Learning Journeys – Parent Interview Online Learning Journeys will be held this Term for Kindergarten - Years 6 on 14 September, Monday of Week 9 from 3.30 – 6pm. For these interviews we are con#nuing to use the internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save #me for parents, staff and students! Using this system, you will be able to book the interview #mes that suit you best from any internet-connected device. A computer will be available in the library during school hours if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere.

Collec#ng these items can take place in many ways. However, at Infant Jesus School, we expect that these special items would be le^ at home as they can be damaged or lost. Children may then become upset which then further impacts their learning as they are distracted by their own items that have been lost or damaged. Indeed, if we see these items at school we remind the students that they need to be le^ at home.

Full instruc#ons are provided to you a^er log in. Please note the following points:

If children are bringing their own resources to school eg. ooshies and mini-books etc it also creates a challenge for those children who do not have these items but would like to join in.

If two parents/guardians wish to acend a single interview #me slot, one parent/guardian should make the booking then both can acend. You will only see #me slots that are available at the #me you are using the system. As #me slots are booked for teachers, those #me slots are no longer displayed as available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians. When you have made all the bookings you require, you can download or email a report of your bookings in #me order for prin#ng. Other parents may be making bookings at the same #me that you are using the system. It is possible, though unlikely, that a #me slot is displayed to you as available but is then booked by another parent shortly a^erwards. If you then acempt to book this #me slot it will not be available, and a message will be displayed to indicate this. If you encounter any problems using PTO please contact the school office.

At school, therefore, we ensure that all students are provided with a variety of op#ons before school, at recess and at lunch. Equipment and resources are available for all students to access. We expect that children look a^er and share the school equipment and resources as this further develops both responsibility and their social skills which are essen#al for life.

What To Bring To School And What To Leave At Home? Over the years we have all seen lots of somewhat ‘gimmicky’ but very well-presented items that all children can easily access. One of the latest is from a supermarket where small items (ooshies and mini-books) are collected to make a complete set. These miniature items are much treasured and keenly collected. It is quite a challenge to ensure all the items have been added and there is a great sense of achievement when the set is complete.

WE ARE CALLED 12

Traditions Each year we par#cipate in a very special occasion – receiving Jesus for the first #me in First Holy Communion or First Eucharist. First Holy Communion is a key step in the ini#a#on of a person into the community of the Church. The community comes together to celebrate with the family and to welcome the child receiving communion. First Holy Communion is the beginning of a special journey of in#mate and lifelong connec#on and friendship with Jesus. When people receive Jesus in the Eucharist he nourishes and strengths them to live the good news. The word ‘communion’ needs to be united with someone. Through our faith we believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus and become Jesus in the world today through our ac#ons, words and way of being when we,: • • • • • •

show love for others, act with kindness, care for people in need, share with others, look a^er God’s crea#on and choose to do what is right.

Holy Communion and the whole celebra#on of the Mass is also known as the Eucharist. Eucharist is from a Greek word meaning thanksgiving. We give thanks at each Mass, but we also give thanks each day for daily blessings we receive from God and for the gi^s and talents that we have all been given.

Thankyou On Friday 28 August we celebrated Infant Jesus Day with Mass at the beginning of the day, work in class focusing on our fac#on saints, stalls and tabloid ac#vi#es in fac#ons throughout the a^ernoon. The very generous P&F organised and donated the Sausage Sizzles and the icy poles. All parents also donated very generously to all the stalls by sending in items to buy or have as prizes and also ensured that their child/ren had loose coins, and more, to spend at all the stalls. Our latest tally of funds raised from the stalls is $2064.30 which will be sent to assist those in need. Thank you to all the parents who assisted us in so many ways in preparing for and celebra#ng Infant Jesus Day.

CLASS NEWS

Year Three Class News In Religion, we have been learning about Bap#sm and how we become part of God’s family once we are bap#sed. We par#cipated in role-plays to show the important words and ac#ons demonstrated by the priest at Bap#sm ceremonies. Some classmates even shared their experience of Bap#sm with everyone. Finally, we discovered that John the Bap#st bap#sed people in the Jordan River. Through Bap#sm we know that the Holy Spirit strengthens us to do what is right. In Humani#es and Social Sciences, we have been busy learning about Australia’s neighbours, in par#cular Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. Currently, we are in the process of wri#ng blogs on Sway to show our understanding of each country. Some facts we have included within our blogs are how people live in their countries, how the climate changes in rela#on to the environment and what flora and fauna live there. A few wonderful parent volunteers shared their experiences based on Indonesia and Malaysia. Check out our Greenscreen photo which make us want to go travelling to Australia’s neighbours.

Halo! My name is Ariel. I am currently waiting at an airport to fly to Indonesia with my family. While we waited, an airport worker called Jane, according to her name tag, gave us some satay chicken and rice or sate and nasi as they call it in Indonesia. It was delicious! But my brother Henry, did not like it because he thought it was spicy, and started running around with his tongue hanging out! When the plane finally arrived, we hopped on the plane. The captain flying the plane had sent a message saying, 'Please keep in your seat at all times'. Then he started singing while the speaker was still on! It was mid-afternoon after we finally ate some food. We were served fish (ikan) and rice (nasi). Everyone loved it! But, the vegetables were not everyone’s favourite. After a few hours we finally arrived. We got out and we were ushered into a beautiful room at our hotel. While my family was unpacking, I read a book I found in a beautiful drawer. It was full of facts about Indonesia. Did you know that there is nearly over 267 million people in Indonesia? Wow! Sometime later, we unpacked and were eating dinner at a luscious restaurant. After dinner, we decided to go to a shop because it was so hot! The shop called in English, was Grama’s Batiks and Kebayas. We bought some clothes and decided to go to a giant park called the Komodo National Park. Did you know that Komodo dragons weigh 76kg? The next day, when we were all awake, we had a delicious breakfast. When we were done, we put on our bathers and went to a big lake called Lake Toba. We swam until we were hungry, we had brought a big basket of delicious satay and rice with us. My brother did not like the satay, he had rendang instead (a spicy curry). When it was getting dark, it was still so hot! Did you know that in Indonesia, the average temperature is 26 degrees? We arrived at home at 8pm. We watched TV for a while and ate some popcorn. Did you know that the meal satay and nasi is a traditional dish in Indonesia? Wow! Tomorrow we are off to Malaysia. Can’t wait to see Malaysia! From, Ariel

Year Four Class News We were very excited to go on an excursion to the Perth Zoo on Monday. In our Integrated lessons we have been looking at the main characteris#cs of the con#nent of Africa. We researched the climate, landforms, na#ve animals, and compared these characteris#cs to Australia’s. During our excursion we met Leah, who taught us all about the dierent adapta#ons of African animals. We also got to pat the protec#ve shell of a small tortoise! It was a fantas#c day of exploring and making connec#ons to our learning. Thank you to our parent helpers for volunteering to spend the day with us at Perth Zoo!

School Banking We need your help with the School Banking program in 2021! Our students really enjoy par#cipa#ng in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help. The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribu#on of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same #me each week and will only take a small amount of your #me. The Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. Currently, School Banking day is on a Tuesday morning. Changes to the day can be discussed based on the volunteer’s availability. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please contact Maria Bellesini by email (mariabellesini@bigpond.com) or by phone 0410 151 110.

Infant Jesus Soccer Club The old Infant Jesus Soccer Club uniforms have been put to good use with a recent dona#on now on its way to Kenya thanks to Uniform Rescue. Uniform Rescue takes uniforms that cannot be reused locally due to branding, and organises their delivery to students in less privileged communi#es interna#onally, suppor#ng the students’ educa#on while diver#ng usable garments from landfill. We really hope our much loved old jerseys will put a smile on the faces of some soccer loving, Kenyan children.
