FROM THE PRINCIPAL Positive Feedback There are so many ‘good things’ happening in our school…

Year 6 School Camp Camp is an exci3ng 3me for our Year 6 students.

Dear Parents Acceptance . . . We all Crave it One thing most craved for by all humans is acceptance by other people and most in need of this are children and teenagers. Acceptance means to treat people with respect; respec3ng their individuality, their uniqueness, their feelings and their abili3es. Quite o]en children going through adolescence quickly learn how to create differences to hide their feelings and opinions and to safeguard their self respect. They fear that if you know them as they really are, you will reject or ridicule them or be horrified. If these barricades are allowed to grow, then children can commence to distance themselves from their parents, because they feel they are not accepted as the people they really are at that stage in their lives.

However, acceptance does not necessarily mean approval. It simply means accep3ng, with understanding and compassion, the facts as they are. One of the best ways of communica3ng acceptance is simply to listen without interrup3on.

Listening means not only hearing the words being said but also, trying to pick up the unspoken messages, pu`ng oneself in the shoes of the other in order to guess how the other feels. Listening means checking to see if you have correctly understood, le`ng the person know you have, then telling them that you are really with them.

What content are children watching?

Some people who have experienced this kind of acceptance, who have let

out whatever anger, hurt or anxiety that was boOled up within them, can then talk themselves into a solu3on to their problem or decide on a beOer way of ac3ng. Others, once they do not feel they are being judged and that their problem has been well discussed and understood, are ready to have their behaviour evaluated, ready to listen to advice or sugges3ons that are proposed to them.

I suppose that part of the meaning of “family” is being able to accept all members for the persons they are.

Lord, I ask for your guidance not only in my personal life but also in my role as a parent.

Who I am is greatly influencing who my child will be.

Please, be always available to me.

Positive Feedback Over the past few weeks we have been conduc3ng interviews for Kindergarten placements at Infant Jesus School for 2021. We have had numerous applica3ons for our sixty Kindergarten places, which is very encouraging. The feedback from parents with whom we are interviewing, par3cularly new to the school, is very posi3ve. Parents look at all possible alterna3ves for the educa3on of their child, not just the convenience of the closest. I think parents are much more discerning these days and do speak to other Mums and Dads of children already enrolled in the school. I believe that parents who send their children to this school are the greatest adver3sement we have. To receive this posi3ve feedback about the school, the staff, the students and the community from new parents is fantas3c!

There are so many ‘good things’ happening in our school due to the efforts of so many different groups of people. Our teachers and ancillary staff; our School Board and P&F CommiOee, and our parent helpers - all contribute to make this school ‘a good place to be!’ It is through the endeavours of many that we are able to provide the students with the best opportuni3es to achieve success. Keep spreading the ‘Good News!’

Nine Key Drivers ~ Life-Long Learners At Infant Jesus School, we believe in the development of the whole child and that our children must be equipped for the future. We understand that the children of today do not live in the world of yesterday and as such believe in an innova3ve, curiosity driven educa3on based upon tradi3onal and new pedagogy and understanding.

Infant Jesus School offers so many exci3ng opportuni3es and I encourage students and parents to aOend relevant events and to be as involved as possible in the life of the school. Our aim, at Infant Jesus School, is to provide a world-class Catholic school where students and staff flourish. Our students and staff are very much aware of these nine key drivers. You will see them in classrooms and on banners around the school. I thought I would share the thinking behind each of these over the course of the year. The first driver I would like to share is Life-Long Learners.

At Infant Jesus School, we celebrate parents as the first and most influen3al educators and recognise that strong collabora3ve partnerships between the parents and the school are essen3al. The staff of the school work collabora3vely with parents to foster children’s spiritual, cogni3ve, physical and social and emo3onal learning and growth.

Students are taught to become life-long learners by focusing on informa3on literacy skills, inquiry and research processes. Students are encouraged to iden3fy, locate, evaluate, organise and effec3vely create, use and communicate informa3on to address issues or problems at hand. We give children opportuni3es to construct their knowledge in a posi3ve rela3onship with others and for each child to be open to different ways of learning.

Teachers will make fair and reasonable professional judgements regarding student progress and performance given the work they have collected from the students whilst at school and also while working on the Remote Learning Program. School Fees Thank you to the many parents who have made effort to pay their school fees early this term. This term’s accounts have been sent and all families are asked to pay these accounts as soon as possible. If any families are experiencing difficulty paying their fees, they are asked to contact the office (Mrs Irene Baginski) to make an appointment with Mr Hille.

Reporting Procedures ~ Semester One 2020 The delivery of teaching and learning in our schools has been severely disrupted by COVID-19 and adjustments have been made to repor3ng requirements to reflect this context. This is the situa3on in ALL schools within Australia this semester. Infant Jesus School, like every other school, will take into account the disrup3ons of COVID-19 and report on the curriculum taught this semester.

School Traffic As parents would be aware the traffic around the school, par3cularly of a home 3me is very congested and slow moving. As a school we are constantly looking at ways we can enable the traffic to flow more smoothly and efficiently. Paramount in all our decision making is the safety of the children.

The staff have done an outstanding job assis3ng children in and out of cars (in all weather condi3ons) as well as doing extra du3es each day to assist with these procedures. Without this level of help and generous support, I am not sure where we would be!

We have spoken to the City of Bayswater regarding up pick-up and drop-off procedures and they are extremely sa3sfied with what we had in place. In fact, they said it was the ‘best’ in the City of Bayswater.

But now we need your help! We have had a few complaints (three) from neighbours about the traffic conges3on of an a]ernoon, par3cularly along Smith Street. Parents coming from Camboon Road and wan3ng to turn le] into Russell Street is the main area of concern, holding up traffic and blocking residents’ driveways. The conges3on lasts for a maximum of 15-20 minutes each day. It must be said that some days are beOer than others.

Our students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 are not dismissed from their classrooms un3l 3.00pm, so parents ge`ng to school earlier than this 3me is of no benefit as the children are s3ll in class. I implore parents maybe to leave the ‘collec3on run’ to a liOle later as this may ease the flow of traffic along Smith/Russell Street and into the Basketball Court Drive-thorough pick-up area. Teachers are on duty, so the children will be supervised. Alterna3vely, parents can park at the Church or at Peter’s Place and walk into school to collect their children.

School Cross Country Championship Next week, the children in Year 1 - 6 will be running their Cross Country in their scheduled Physical Educa3on/Sport lesson on the school oval. Due to recent CEWA changes, parents will be able to watch their child's run, please have a look at the document for the running 3mes for each year level: PLEASE NOTE: ★ The only access to the oval will be through the

Basketball Court Gates.

★ Parking will be available at Peter’s

Place or the Church.

★ Due to the limited area on the oval,

there will be designated areas to watch (under verandah and middle of the school oval). ★ To limit the number of people on the oval, parents are to watch their own child's race then depart back through the Basketball gates at the conclusion of the run. ★ Medals will be handed out at the end of each race. ★ Children need to wear their coloured Infant Jesus fac3on sports top on the day of their run.

Year 6 ~ School Camp We have been fortunate (given the COVID-19 restric3ons) to allow the Year 6 Camp to go ahead this year. I must admit there was a 3me there where I felt this would not be happening which would have been tragic for our Year 6 students.

Camp is an exci3ng 3me for our Year 6 students. The students and staff will be se`ng off in Week 10 of this term to Forest Edge Bush Camp in Waroona. The purpose of this camp is fundamentally about developing the leaders of the school. The school camp builds confidence, resilience and responsibility, turning students into empowered, inspiring leaders.

All children learn from the unique experience of community living; sharing, working and living as a team.

Being inter-dependant with peers affords the child an opportunity to make new friends, to view each other out of the context of school, and to witness and appreciate the different talents of others. School camps expose children to different environments that they would not normally experience in daily suburban living.

Out of this they build personal competencies such as self-iden3ty, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership and self-respect.

Camps help develop self-esteem as children learn to try different ac3vi3es in a suppor3ve and friendly environment. Professionally trained, outdoor instructors help children feel secure and capable. This will help children grow by providing a supervised, posi3ve environment that has safety as a primary commitment.

Students par3cipate in ac3vi3es they have never experienced before and are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Camp is therefore a wonderful experience for all children as they learn new skills and develop a sense of autonomy and trust in their decisions.

The aims of the camp are: ★ to develop within the students their leadership skills. ★ to build and develop new friendships. ★ to build personal competencies such as self-iden3fy, selfworth, self-esteem and self-respect. ★ to par3cipate in ac3vi3es that perhaps students have never experienced before. ★ to develop new skills and develop a sense of autonomy and trust in their decisions.

‘Thank You’ To Our P&F Committee This Friday our wonderful P&F Execu3ve and CommiOee will put on a “Special Lunch” for all the staff at Infant Jesus School. The P&F wanted to express their thanks and gra3tude to the teachers for the ‘amazing efforts’ the staff went to keep the learning program ‘alive’ and func3oning while the school was in lockdown for a number of weeks.

As I have men3oned previously, the posi3ve feedback we have received from parents has been overwhelming. I take this opportunity on behalf of all the staff to thank Mrs Marisa Gulluni and her team for this kind and generous offer and level of support. Thank You

What Content are Children Watching?

There’s a rising trend of children watching adult content. Sex scenes, violence and inappropriate language, once shown on television during an adults-only 3me, are becoming staple viewing for many of today’s children.

In a recent poll of 1,800 US parents, 40% admiOed allowing their children to watch movies that are unsuitable for their age group. A recent discussion by this writer with parents suggests that the trends are similar in Australia. Very few of the parents I spoke with referred to the classifica3on guidelines when choosing content for their children.

The increase in ‘adult-only’ anima3on is one factor that blurs the line of suitability for children. Adult-only genres such as Marvel movies and X Men franchise and television programs such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead thanks to streaming now count children among their devotees. Computer games, so popular with many children and young people, also cross the line of acceptability in terms of behaviour and a`tudes on display.

Can we become DesensiTsed Over Time?

Viewing standards, like standards of acceptable behaviour, have subtly shi]ed over 3me. Sex scenes, physical violence or violent language is now a common part of adult content, which has a desensi3sing effect on parents. Desensi3sa3on leads to acceptance and a higher level of exposure to children.

Does FiVng in Play a Part?

Adver3sers know that children’s pester power can play a significant role in the type of foods that go into the shopping trolley, which influences how food is packaged and promoted. Pester power plays a similar role in the choice of movies and television programs that we allow children to watch. “All the other kids have seen this movie?” is the type of comment from a child that hits a nerve for many parents, who righyully want their child to fit in with their peers.

What are the Risks?

There are many concerns about children being exposed to adult content in movies, television programs and the computer games. Here’s a summary: Developmental Risks Exposure to content that requires complex adult interpreta3on can be deeply confusing and disturbing to children. They o]en have difficulty discerning reality from what they are viewing on television so that they can develop a warped world view. The impact may not be immediate but will show itself increasingly over 3me when children’s a`tudes towards sex, their peers or authority reflect the on-screen content they’ve been viewing.

Impact on aVtudes and behaviour Children are like sponges soaking up what they see and hear. Viewing parent-sanc3oned programs that display disrespecyul behaviour toward women, abuse of alcohol and drugs, and shows violence as normal have a powerful impact on the a`tudes and behaviour of children. Viewed o]en enough, young minds can interpret these types of inappropriate behaviours as normal.

Impact on wellbeing According to the Australian Council on Children and Media (ACCM) there is significant evidence that exposure by children to adult movies and programs leads to the development of exaggerated fears; causes loss of sleep and increases childhood anxiety. ACCM claims that “these fears are not insignificant and can be long las3ng.”

What can You Do? There are a number of ac3ons you can take to ensure the content that children consume is appropriate for their age level, including: ✴ Follow classificaTon guidelines

Become familiar with the Government classifica3on guidelines for movies, television programs and games.

Understand what they mean and develop the habit of checking the classifica3on ra3ng of each new piece of content that children will be watching or interac3ng with.

✴ Find out

It’s easier than ever to find out for yourself the suitability of content for a child or young person. Research methods include ve`ng a television program yourself for suitability; searching online for views and opinions before allowing your child to watch a movie; reading reviews of online games to ascertain suitability.

✴ Talk with other parents

It’s easy to feel isolated as a parent, which makes you more suscep3ble to children’s pester power. Just as children have a propensity to gang up on parents (“Everyone in my class is watching that movie”), parents can gain the strength that comes with numbers when they talk with each other (“I’ve just checked with some mums and no one is allowing their child to watch that movie”).

Many current community concerns about children such as the increase in anxiety levels, disrespecyul rela3onships and a propensity towards aggression is mirrored in the content many children consume in movies, television and games. It would be folly to suggest that inappropriate content consump3on is the root cause of these maladies, however winding back the viewing habits of children to reflect more closely their developmental levels would have a surprisingly posi3ve impact.

May you not forget the infinite possibili3es that are born of faith.

May you use those gi]s that you have received, And pass on the love that has been given to you.

May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence seOle into your bones, And allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

Sacramental Program Fr Greg and the Parish Sacramental Team have revised the dates for the Sacramental Program for 2020. Parents of the children who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first 3me this year have been no3fied of the new dates and 3mes of the First Communion Masses.

At a later date some more informa3on regarding other aspects of the program will be provided. This includes the Commitment Masses, the Parent and Child Workshop and the Retreat and Prac3ce.

Parish News COVID-19 Phase 3 of W.A. Roadmap in Infant Jesus Parish We commit Infant Jesus Parish to support and comply with all government direc3ves and associated public health advice in our response to this emergency. In accordance with Phase 3 of the W.A. Roadmap our Parish Church will be open at normal 3mes. I want to thank all those volunteers who have enabled us to open the church for mass this past week and will enable us to remain open during Phase 3.

Next term, the Parish will also send families of children preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia3on some updated informa3on.

Sacramental Program Sacrament of First Eucharist

Up to one hundred (100) people may be present in the church at any one 3me. There needs to be two square metres of floor space per person and a physical distance of 1.5 metres from persons of other households. There is no need to book for weekday mass, but bookings are required to ensure a place for Sunday masses. Priority will be given to those who have booked, but if space is available others will also be admiOed un3l the limit of 100 people is reached.

Following the recent changes as to numbers of people allowed to gather in accordance with the Covid-19 Phase 3 Roadmap, we are pleased to advise that the Sacramental Team in our recent mee3ng have now set dates and 3mes for the First Eucharist celebra3ons. The team necessarily had to plan with the current regula3ons in mind and to work within the restric3ons in place at the moment.

New dates for First Eucharist Celebra3on: • Saturday, September 5th at 3:00 pm OR • Saturday, September 12th at 3:00 pm OR • Saturday, September 19th at 3:00 pm.

To register for Mass on the weekend go to www.eventbrite.com.au and search ‘Mass at Infant Jesus Church' and follow the prompts.

Parents/guardians enrolled for First Communion are reminded that the current limited numbers allowed in the church also mean that the number of immediate family members you can bring may be very limited.

However, we are all hoping the Government will soon relax the current restric3ons to be able to accommodate more immediate family members.

Please see the recent email sent to all the First Eucharist families regarding the changes and please reply by email with your FIRST and SECOND preference of the three Saturdays.

One Science News

This term, the Year One’s explored Earth and Space Science with a par3cular focus on ‘Observable Changes that Occur in the Sky.’ The children began by looking at the Earth and how day and night is made and where the sun rises and sets. Next, we studied the moon and learnt how the phases affect the Earth. Following this, the children explored the weather and seasons and how the changes in this affect what we wear, do and eat.

Year Two Health News In Health this term, Year Two’s explored the physical signs that happen to their bodies when they are both in a safe and an unsafe situa3on.

Then they learned how to dis3nguish between an emergency and nonemergency situa3on which led to being able to iden3fy what emergency service would be required if an emergency arose. The children watched YouTube videos on how to make emergency calls and prac3ced making these from a script they had wriOen.

Sport News Well Winter is definitely here! The children have been fantas3c with adap3ng to some last-minute Physical Educa3on class changes due to the weather. As part of our Cross-Country training and PE assessment, the Year 4-6 children have taken part in the ‘Beep Test’ in the hall. It has been awesome watching the children strive to achieve their very best score whilst developing their fitness.

The Year 5 and 6 children are also in the middle of their Soccer Tournament. The children have been placed in small teams and must compete in a round-robin compe33on with seven-minute games. The children are being assessed on their interpersonal skills and basic team strategies/tac3cs. The games are all very close so we are in for an exci3ng finish!

The Year 4 children have just finished Basketball where the focus was dribbling and passing. We finished most lessons with a game of Golden Dragon which displayed their amazing teamwork skills!

The Pre-Primary to Year 3 children have been prac3sing their locomotor and object control skills in a tabloid sports format. Hopefully the rain can stay away so we can finish the term outside!

Our ministry is all about helping or serving others in the community. We have looked at how we can show this by either helping the Parish or school be it helping out in the Canteen or other ac3vi3es. We have also begun wri3ng prayer books for all classes in the school. We cant wait to share them with all the classes. We strive to be the best leaders we can be. #ExpectGreatThings!

Public Relations Ministry The Year Six Public RelaTons Ministry have reviewed aspects of their Charter and looked more closely at the school uniform expecta3ons. They have listed some reminders to help the Year One to Six students.

Remember to ‣ always treat our uniform with pride so that everyone will know that we are students at Infant Jesus School. ‣ always make sure our uniform is neat and 3dy.

For the boys this means ‣ shirts tucked in ‣ top buOon done up ‣ straight 3e ‣ collar is kept down ‣ laces done up ‣ school socks only ‣ hair is out of your eyes For the girls this means ‣ hair can only be out if it is shorter than shoulder length ‣ hair must be up if longer than shoulder length ‣ ribbons / scrunchies are navy blue or white (can have black elas3cs or clips) ‣ make sure to tuck your shirt in ‣ make sure your top buOon is done up on your shirt ‣ wear only school socks ‣ wear only navy-blue 3ghts (op3onal to wear 3ghts) ‣ pinafore must be worn properly with all buOons done up (Year 1 – 3) ‣ make sure to wear your skirt with all buOons done up (Year 4 – 6) We have included a photo to assist with wearing our uniform correctly.

Sustainability Ministry The Sustainability Ministry will be collec3ng ring pulls for Wheelchairs for Kids. Ring pulls are the parts on top of so] drink cans that you use to open them.

Please put your ring pulls in the green bins next to the lost property box/iLab. We will hand them in on behalf of the school to Wheelchairs for Kids. All money from the sale of recyclable aluminium ring pulls will be used to buy materials to buy wheelchairs.

Please don’t put any rubbish in the green bins; only ring pulls. Thank you!

P&F NEWS

Well, what can we say, the first half of the year has certainly been very different for everyone.

Like everyone else the P&F laid low due to various restric3ons and the uncertainty of these 3mes. But we are looking forward to hopefully ge`ng up and running next term.

The P&F will be providing a delicious lunch for all the Infant Jesus School staff on Friday, who have gone to great efforts in ensuring our children con3nued their educa3on and felt safe in doing so, whether it was at home or school. Their efforts have been amazing, pu`ng our children's educa3onal needs first.

The school has gone to great lengths to implement COVID-19 cleaning requirements to keep the whole school community safe. Also the huge effort in coordina3ng our pick up and drop off procedures, which we know would have taken a fair bit of 3me, ensuring all the children were safely ge`ng to and from school.

We truly are very fortunate as a school community to have such dedicated staff. Thank you Infant Jesus School staff for all your efforts during these 3mes. We can’t wait for some normality.

Trinity College Trinity College warmly invites you to aOend an Open Day for prospec3ve students on Wednesday, 1 July 2020. Families are welcome to aOend the 9:15am or 4:15pm session.
