Volunteer Mass and Morning Tea To be held on on Thursday 28 November.
DEAR PARENTS Every now and then, we all need a liAle ‘stop and ponder’ moment, just to take stock of how our life is going along. The following few lines might give us a “ponder” or two on an all too familiar topic: “We’re too busy it seems to take 7me for dreams or to go for a walk in the sun. Too busy today, no 7me for play too busy just gebng things done. Too busy to watch the children play we don’t hear half the things they say. Will our hearts be filled with misgivings, when we learn we’ve been too busy for living.?” It is true that the more we expect of life, the busier it becomes, and the more complicated and cluAered it gets. Inevitably, this leads to less 7me we have available to appreciate the good things we have in life. Confucius definitely had it right when he said, “Life is really simple, but we insist in making it complicated. How much of our busy-ness and life cluAer is brought about by our being caught up in the consumer culture that focuses on making money and then spending it on what we think we need. What were once considered to be luxuries are now seen as necessi7es and, we scramble to maintain and pay for all these new “necessi7es”.
3
Kindergarten Information Evening Will be held on Monday 2 December at 6.00pm
An unfortunate reality of life today is that the new things or “necessi7es” that we forget about what is really important in our lives. There is a danger that our family life are most probably can be affected, for at the end of a busy day each family member is both 7red and overs7mulated: each person is seeking love in the family as well as healing and emo7onal nourishment. However, all too ogen the well is dry! Weariness, frustra7on and irrita7on boil to the surface and family conversa7on can become biAer and sharp instead of gentle and kind. It’s a true case of not being able to give what we do not have, even when it is our loved ones who are in need of our giving. A number of years ago there was a bumper s7cker that said, “Jesus is coming back soon, look busy!” When we look at the Gospels that tell of Jesus’ life, it does appear that he was a busy person. However, Jesus was also a person who celebrated life with enthusiasm from the beginning of his public life at the marriage at Cana to ager his Resurrec7on, when some Apostles came ashore ager fishing all night and found Jesus cooking breakfast for them. Our “wants” and “desires” can cause our life to rush past us. Probably, we all need to spend more 7me on ourselves to ensure our physical and spiritual welfare and so that: “. Our hearts will not be filled with misgivings, and we’ve not been too busy for living are cared for/looked ager.” This is certainly a promise and commitment I am going to make to myself moving forward!
Season of Advent This Sunday (24 November) the Church will commemorate the final celebra7on in this liturgical year with “The Feast of Christ the King”. Over the past 365 days we have lived the en7re liturgical year and celebrated Jesus Christ's life, death, resurrec7on, and ascension into glory. The Sunday following (December 1) we enter into the joyous season of the Advent. The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." The focus of the en7re season is the celebra7on of the birth of Jesus Christ in his first Advent and the an7cipa7on of the return of Christ the King in his second Advent. Our prayers at this 7me remind us that Advent is a season of wai7ng. Advent is marked by a spirit of expecta7on of an7cipa7on, of prepara7on and of longing. Advent is one of the few Chris7an fes7vals that can be observed in the home as well as at church. With its associa7on with Christmas, Advent is a natural 7me to involve children in ac7vi7es at home that directly connect with worship at church. In the home an Advent Wreath is ogen placed on the dining table and is lit at meals. An Advent Calendar is a way to keep children involved in the en7re season. There are a wide variety of Advent calendars, but usually they are simply a card or poster with windows that can be opened, one each day of Advent, to reveal some symbol or picture associated with the Old Testament story leading up to the birth of Jesus.
The Advent Wreath
Advent is a season with its own special mood, colours, sounds, words and joys. The colours of advent are violet, mauve or magenta. An Advent Wreath is a circle, usually of evergreen branches, with four candles placed in or around it (usually three purple and one rose), one for each of the four Sundays of the season. The circular wreath is a sign of God’s loving and never-ending care. During Advent, one candle is lit every week. • The purple candles are for the sorrow we feel for not loving Jesus enough. • The rose candle is for the joy surrounding the impending birth of Jesus. • The evergreen symbolises God is with us always and will never change. • The circle symbolises that God is eternal, with no beginning and no end.

Volunteer Mass and Morning Tea As parents would be aware, Thursday 28 November, there is a Volunteers Mass at Infant Jesus School commencing at 9.00am, followed by a morning tea in the Hall to say ‘thank you’ to all the parents who have assisted with school ac7vi7es throughout year. We recognise that parents are a very important link between home and school and we greatly value and appreciate the support they have provided the staff and students of Infant Jesus School. Please click on this link to RSVP your aAendance to the morning tea:
Annual Community Meeting As parents are aware, our Annual Community Mee7ng will take place on Tuesday 26 November at 7.00pm. See the links below for more informa7on and nomina7on forms. We encourage parents to consider assis7ng the school community by serving on one of these commiAees. At this mee7ng the Execu7ve from both CommiAees will report back to the school community in regard to the opera7on of the school for the current year. It is also important because the next year’s members for the CommiAees are elected. Our aim here is to achieve a parent representa7on which will ensure a wider involvement of our families in school life.

Infant Jesus School Board Members of the School Board provide a service in the Chris7an tradi7on, serving the school community according to their par7cular skills. It is a shared ministry and as such draws upon the shared wisdom in its members, working together as Chris7ans, both to support the ethos of the Catholic school and to provide for the material needs of the school. It is important that school boards draw their membership from a broad crosssec7on of the community. The School Board is responsible to the Conference of Bishops through the Catholic Educa7on Commission of WA for planning and for the financial management of the School. We thank the 2019 School Board members for their commitment and service:
It is tremendous to have this level of interest displayed in the development of both the children and the school as a whole. Many ac7vi7es could not be planned without the involvement and generous commitment of 7me and energy that is given by all our volunteers. To all our parent helpers and volunteers - THANK YOU.

School Fees
Parents are encouraged to nominate for a posi7on on either the School Board (one posi7ons or P&F Execu7ve CommiAee for 2020 and assist with the valuable contribu7on that both these parent representa7ve organisa7ons make to the Infant Jesus School Community. Nomina7on forms for have been distributed to the community and at this stage there is one vacancy with two of the current Board Members renomina7ng for their second term on the Infant Jesus School Board.
The year is drawing to a close quite rapidly, and there are s7ll a number of families who have outstanding School Fee Accounts. We ask that all families please finalise their School Fees by 22 November. Opportuni7es are con7nuously provided to all families who are experiencing difficul7es to discuss their situa7on with me. Some families have acted on this, and I thank them for their sincerity and honesty. If you are experiencing legi7mate difficul7es in rela7on to your school fees, please contact Mrs Irene Baginski at the school office so an appointment can be made with me at a convenient 7me.
‣ Ability to listen and to share ideas. ‣ A desire to give service to the Catholic School Community. ‣ A keenness to promote Catholic Schooling. ‣ An ability to work coopera7vely and construc7vely with all other board members.
“The role of parents in educa7on is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate subs7tute.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church)
P&F Committee 2020 At this year’s ACM we will be calling for parents to nominate themselves to be on the P&F CommiAee. We will require at least two parents from each year level to form the Infant Jesus School P&F CommiAee. At the first mee7ng in 2020 we will be elec7ng the various Execu7ve posi7ons (e.g. President, Treasurer and Secretary) for the year.
2020 Enrolments As the school undertakes the process of prepara7on for the upcoming school year, it is important that we are aware of possible movements both in and out of the school community. The end of any school year is a busy 7me for many families insofar as transfers due to work or other personal circumstances. With posi7on vacancies at a premium and with wai7ng lists already for par7cular year levels, it is essen7al that we are made aware as soon as is prac7cable of either new enrolments or of families who may be transferring.
I ask that parents give some considera7on to both serving on the commiAee and nomina7ng for one of the Execu7ve posi7ons.
P&F Student Disco Many Thanks to the P&F Execu7ve for hos7ng the School Disco last Friday night. While it was very warm the children had a fantas7c 7me. Thank you also to the small band of people who helped set up the hall for the disco and those who remained behind to help the cleaning up. Well Done.
Kindergarten Information Evening There will be a Kindergarten Informa7on Night on Monday 2 December in the School Hall commencing at 6.00pm for all parents of children aAending Kindergarten in 2020. The Kindergarten Informa7on Night will provide parents with the opportunity to find out more about the school and the Kindergarten Program in 2020.

when you are dog-7red; or when you want a cosy Sunday morning in bed), not the first one you use when you want your kids to behave well.
From My Readings This Week…
Avoid Doing Deals with Kids
Here are 5 alterna7ves to ‘doing deals’ with kids: 1. Catch them doing the right thing: Make a bit of a fuss when your kids behave as you want. Tell your face that you are pleased with your kids so it lights up, and kids get to no7ce you are happy with their behaviour. This is based on the premise that parent recogni7on (“Mum/ Dad is happy with me”) is a high driver for many kids. 2. Reward them ager the behaviour you want: Avoid saying, “If you behave well on our shopping trip I’ll buy you a matchbox car.” This is bribery, which is 7ed up with the art of dealing. Instead, show your apprecia7on with a treat ager they have behaved well. The order of events makes a huge difference! 3. Manage like a cat: There are 7mes when a child or teen needs to know that “No means no” rather than “No is just a sugges7on”. A message delivered with firm body language, a s7ll head and a clear, flat voice without intona7on indicates to a child or teen that you are serious and that no further communica7on is to be entered into. This non-verbal communica7on is quite cat-like, thus the cat metaphor for parent credibility. 4. Let consequences be your friend: Let your ac7ons, or lack of ac7on, do the talking. Rather than nego7a7ng with kids to pack their toys away, put toys that are leg around into the ‘mystery bin’ for a 7me. You may need to hold firm to a tantrum when you use this method but hang tough so your child sees that you really mean what you say and do. 5. Focus on you, not them: Want them to go bed on 7me? Then start reading their bed7me story at the agreed 7me whether they are there or not (This works well if your child is a reader! Not so good if your child isn’t interested in books. It’s the principle that counts). Resist calls for ‘that’s not fair!’ as not being in bed at an agreed 7me is not fair on you either! The simple shig from telling them what to do to telling them what you will do makes a massive difference par7cularly when you have a child who doesn’t like to be told what to do.
Have you ever said something like this to one of your kids? “If you eat all your dinner up, I’ll let you use my iPad for five minutes.” Most kids under the age of ten would empty their plate in an instant with that sort of carrot dangled in their face. But it’s a tricky game you play when you start to do deals with kids to win their coopera7on. For a start, you need to be prepared to raise the stakes as the novelty of five minutes of iPad use will soon wear off. This would also mean you need to be prepared to keep dealing with your kids, as they soon learn that if they hang out long enough, Mum/Dad or whoever will offer me a juicy en7cement to win my favours.
You Get What You Negotiate Keep doing deals with kids enough and they learn that they get what you nego7ate. That’s fine in the business-world, but hard work in families. I’ve seen mums who deal with kids because they just want peace and quickly. I’ve also seen dads deal with their kids because they simply enjoy nego7a7ng. They see it as a game. That’s hard work for their partner who doesn’t use those methods.
Kids Who do Deals Some7mes it’s kids who do the nego7a7ng. “You want me to go to bed at 8.00pm do you? Well I’ll go to bed at 8 o’clock if I can have a TV in my room” says a born nego7ator. It takes a savvy parent to say, “Actually, no. That’s not going to happen.” Some7mes we become involved in child-ini7ated deals before we’re even aware it’s happening. Again, kids can take advantage of busy, 7red or 7me-poor parents.
The Last Resort If doing deals with kids to get coopera7on is a strategy you use then it should be a strategy of last resort (to use when your mother comes to visit,
7
Nothing works all the 7me, so smart parents know they need to have a number of different strategies at their disposal when they want coopera7on from their kids. They also have a hierarchy of responses that places ‘making deals with kids’ their last resort, rather than their first op7on. In fact, it may be best to leave doing deals out of your paren7ng armoury altogether and focus on using other communica7ons methods instead. By Michael Grose

Reading Comprehension
Summarising Summarising is a strategy that can be used in almost every learning area and can be used for a paragraph, a page, a chapter or an en7re book. When using this strategy larger pieces of text are reduced so the focus is on the most important elements. Summarising is most ogen used ager reading and is useful for; ‣ helping children learn to determine essen7al ideas and consolidate the important details that support them. ‣ helping children to learn how to ignore irrelevant informa7on. ‣ enabling children to focus on key words and phrases of an assigned text that are worth no7ng and remembering. ‣ teaching children how to take a large sec7on of text and reducing it to the main points for more concise understanding. ‣ teaching children to integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. ‣ improving comprehension by helping children to process the informa7on they read with the goal of breaking down content into smaller pieces. ‣ helping to improve wri7ng as children write summary notes. ‣ strengthening vocabulary skills as the text is reduced.

Propor7onal Thinking is All Around Us
With lots of experience in making comparisons, your child will eventually progress to propor7onal thinking – that is, being able to make comparisons by using mul7plica7on.
The new Mathema7cs Challenge will be drawn at the Monday Morning Assembly.
Qualitative comparison: “The adult is taller than the child.”
Additive comparison: “The adult is 100 cen7metres taller than the child.” Multiplicative comparison: “The adult is twice as tall as the child.” Look for situa7ons involving propor7onal thinking in real life. Have your child explain his or her thinking. Some examples are provided here: •

Next 7me you are at Mass observe the ac7ons and words of the priest at this significant 7me during the Mass.
Parts of the Mass
Sign of Peace
As the Sign of Peace concludes the breaking of the bread commences and is carried out with great reverence. During this prayer the priest uses the large consecrated bread. The ac7on of breaking the bread was done by Christ at the Last Supper which in Jesus’ 7me gave the en7re Eucharis7c ac7on its name and signifies that the faithful are made of one body by receiving Communion for the one Bread of Life, which is Christ.
In your prepara7on consider how the Eucharist strengthens you to use the gigs and talents that God has given you to be an example of Jesus for others.
St Vincent de Paul donations for Christmas Many thanks to everyone for their generosity in dona7ng to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal….we had more than 30 boxes!!

Jesus is the Lamb of God who gave himself for us and saved us. At this special 7me we pray for God’s mercy and peace. CLASS NEWS
Pre-Kindy Class News In Pre-Kindy, we have been inves7ga7ng creatures and plants that live in the ocean. We completed an observa7onal pain7ng of our favourite sea creature and conducted an experiment using bicarbonate soda balls and vinegar to reveal a creature inside that were asked to iden7fy and describe. We used our crea7vity to design a seascape using a variety of collage materials and chose a creature to make from air dry clay which we painted with edicol dye. We were involved in an art project that took two weeks to complete and involved many steps. Puppets and ocean animal toys were used to tell stories and a variety of books, both fic7on and non-fic7on, helped us learn some interes7ng facts and understand the need for us to take care of our oceans. By the end of five weeks, our classroom was transformed into an underwater world filled with the ac7vi7es completed during our inves7ga7on as well as lots of photos of sea creatures. It proved to be a great topic.

Kindy Class News The Kindy children have con7nued to be excited about the learning experiences in the classroom. With the introduc7on of an airport and aeroplane roleplay area the children learnt about different countries Barnaby Bear, visited around the world. There was a real sense of wonder about different countries, what they look like, their cultural characteris7cs, their forms of transport and their different foods. From this we started to create leAers to each other about the things we enjoyed the most. We celebrated our many different cultures during a mul7cultural day in which we dressed up in our favourite country’s dress and shared different cultural food. We acknowledged our sister school in China through our China Day celebra7ons by sending them especially made cards. Over the last few weeks we have been discussing growth and change. When we started Kindy we set ourselves some goals to enable us to learn and grow this year. In Term Four, we have achieved most of our goals and are reflec7ng on how we have developed into independent and successful learners. This week we commenced our Christmas prepara7ons. Our main focus will be on the Holy Family and how we celebrate the birth of Jesus. The children will have the opportunity to role-play the story of Jesus’ birth and focus on the Chris7an meaning of Christmas. We will also perform our Kindy Christmas Concert in Week 8 as a celebra7on of an amazing year in Kindy. It has been an amazing journey already and its only Week Six! We look forward to the following weeks events as we prepare for the birth of Jesus and our journey to Pre-Primary next year.

Pre-Primary Class News As the school year draws to a close, we reflect on all the learning that the children have taken part in and we are so very proud of their achievements. The children have par7cipated in many tasks to help them appreciate the gig of life that God has given them. They have come to the understanding that they need to take good care of themselves as a way of thanking God for their amazing bodies. We have also been exploring the concept of memory and what this actually means. The children happily shared a special memory with the class and created spectacular illustra7ons of this event using many different mediums. Everyone is now looking forward to learning about the significance of Christmas. It has been truly amazing to see the children flourish with their reading and wri7ng skills which has been evident in all curriculum areas. This was especially apparent when we, as a class, read the dream7me story “How the Birds Got Their Colours” and the children were able to use a number of reading and comprehension strategies to help them read large sec7ons of the story. The expression that they used made the story very entertaining and everyone read at a steady pace with fluency. It was also very exci7ng to see the detailed oral and wriAen retells each children created about the story. Many of the children were able to write a number of sentences including high frequency words and also tried very hard to hear and write many of the sounds in words. The children have had so much fun experimen7ng with different types of balance scales and having the opportunity to weigh objects. Cubes were used to measure and the children were surprised at ‘how many cubes heavy’ par7cular objects were. It was lovely to see some students count past one hundred in order to discover how heavy an object was. Amazing coun7ng skills!

In Health, the children have been learning about healthy ea7ng and are very aware of why we need to eat these types of foods and the importance of avoiding foods that are high in sugar and fats. This will be further consolidated when we visit Woolworths at the Galleria and the children will be exposed to the various rainbow colours of fruit and vegetables that our bodies need for our health and well-being. During the visit the children will locate some of these foods in the store and then make a yummy fruit salad that they can eat. The children have been very engaged with the dream-7me stories they have listened to and were intrigued by the connec7on the Aboriginal people have with the land. They were especially interested with the Aboriginal artwork and were very interested in the symbols what they signiďŹ ed.

Sport News Interschool Athletics Carnival On Tuesday, 5 November our Athle7cs squad made up of selected Year Three – Six children represented our school at the CPSSA Interschool Athle7cs Carnival. It was a great pleasure to witness the way our children competed against the other schools, but also their sportsmanship on the day. The team showed great pride in their school and should be commended for their efforts.
Each child tried their best in their events, with many children taking home place ribbons and achieving personal bests. The day was very exci7ng as Infant Jesus started at the top of the leader board and remained a front runner for the whole day. We ended up coming a close fourth. We must make special men7on to our girls who won their division…Go Girls!!! Well done to all of our athletes. I would like to thank Mr Colangelo and Miss Fo7 for their amazing effort in marshalling and looking ager our children. I also want to make special men7on to the parents who helped out on the day: Mrs Pillera, Mr Tiniakos, Mrs Mammone, Mr Iela7 and Mr Marino-Dayan. It was extremely warm down on the track and I am very grateful for their efforts!

SAFE SCHOOL FRAMEWORK
Communication Tips Young people ogen tell Kids Helpline they find it difficult to communicate with their parents. Here are some 7ps around helping you and your child communicate well together.
What is great communication? Conveying our message is only one part of communica7on. Great communica7on goes further and allows us to build trust, self-esteem and strong healthy rela7onships. • Great communica7on is a two-way process. Listening is as important as talking • Your child’s brain is s7ll developing including learning to handle their emo7ons and communicate well • Successful communica7on with your child depends on what, how, when, where and why you say things. What you don’t say is also important! CommunicaIon styles The way we communicate differs based on gender, cultural background, age and the situa7on. It’s likely you and your child have different communica7on expecta7ons because of the genera7on gap. However, in general there are three communica7on styles. The first is more helpful when compared with the other two.
22
What if communication has broken down? You might feel powerless when you and your child can’t talk effec7vely about difficult maAers. • You could try s7cking to safe topics, while you work out what to do. • Tell them you care and will do all you can to work this out. • Some7mes it can help to have a calm third person involved to support communica7on between you. • If you have concerns about your child’s development of communica7on skills for their age, check in with your doctor. Remember, you and your child are not alone - they can talk to Kids Helpline and you can talk to a Parentline counsellor in your State or Territory.
