Dear Parents Building Resilience Children love to be praised. It is one of the joys of living and working with them to see them display pride and happiness when they do something well and we, whether parent or significant other, observe their achievement. Most importantly, children love to please those they care about the most - their Mums and Dads!

As parents, this can be difficult to remember at Omes, parOcularly a[er our children have done something mischievous or wayward; or we’ve had a busy, demanding and Oring day; or we are just not feeling that well.

The task of being a parent is, to say the least - quite a challenge! There is no instrucOon kit available, user manual, or teachers’ guide to follow - that comes with the privilege of being a parent. However, what is available is the support and experience of those we love and trust, our parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours who, through their life experiences, may be able to assist us with the challenges we face each and every day.

As parents we want to help our children to deal with life’s challenges, as well as build the necessary skills to deal the with these when they arise. We want to help develop resilience in our children. Resilience is defined as our ability to cope with problems and change and bounce back a[er these challenges. Below are some pracOcal Ops for parents about how to develop posiOve connecOons with your child’s school.

COVID-19 Update Parents will be permiUed to enter the school grounds as of next week

Resilient people have: ✦ Self-esteem –feel good about themselves and have a sense of being special and value just because who they are ✦ skills to cope with stress and challenges ✦ Support – Good Role Models – at least one caring adult Outlined below some of the ‘Ops’ for how parents can help children become more resilient: ✦ Parents are the most important people in a child’s life. There are many things parents can do to foster resilience. ✦ Show children you love them and accept them just as they are. Assure them whether they succeed or not, they have the same intrinsic value. ✦ Model posiOve adtudes and values. ✦ Have realisOcally high expectaOons for achievement and behaviour. ✦ Foster success – encourage your children in whatever area they are good at and value. ✦ Take Ome to listen to your children. ✦ Teach your children to solve problems and make decisions. ✦ Teach children about spiritual awareness – the capacity to reflect, to know their life is valuable, to know they have inner resources, to be prayerful.

Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures – from June 8 The COVID-19 pandemic has provided us with the opportunity to examine our Pick-Up and Drop-Off procedures for our school.

Feedback from parents regarding the new Pick-Up and Drop-Off procedures implemented due to the COVID-19 restricOons has been overwhelmingly posiOve with many parents requesOng it remains in place because it has made their life more streamlined and their children have become more independent, responsible and resilient.

The City of Bayswater has commended our school on the procedures implemented and, of all the schools in the City of Bayswater area, Infant Jesus School (Parents and Staff) has been one of the most successful at implemenOng appropriate and well-thought out procedures for student collecOon. They have received nil complaints about our school.

At this stage, I would really encourage parents to read the leUer that was emailed to all families yesterday and complete the short survey by 5pm this a[ernoon (if you haven’t already done so).

COVID-19 Update – Catholic Education Western Australia As announced by the Premier, parents will be permiUed to enter the school grounds as of next week (Monday, June 8). However, in line with the latest State Government and Department of Health advice, current Term 2 arrangements have been reviewed and the following will apply from Monday 8 June 2020:

✴ Pre-arranged parent/caregiver meeOngs can proceed, adhering to physical distancing and hygiene protocols.

✴ Parents and caregivers are allowed onto school grounds to drop off and collect their children. To ensure the

2m2 rule is adhered to, parents are asked not to enter classrooms at the beginning or end of the school day.

✴ If parents want to meet with the teacher this needs to be a designated Fme organised with the teacher via

I am pleased to say that we had a very posiOve response rate from our parents, so I Thank You for this support.

Response: 98% of our parent responses were either saOsfied to extremely saOsfied with the how the school performed in conOnuing the educaOonal program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I once again thank the many parents who took the Ome to complete this survey. All data has been shared with the staff and will be used to look at ways in which we can improve our pracOces at Infant Jesus School.

Three-Year-Old Program 2021 The Three-Year-Old Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School is an educaOonal program for Pre-Kindergarten children.

The program at the school is very much play-based and helps the children develop independence and creaOvity by offering interesOng and fun acOviOes, that are developmentally appropriate, in a semi-structured form.

The program follows a rouOne similar to Kindergarten where the children are in the care of a teacher and a teacher assistant for the duraOon of the session, but parent help is encouraged.

Who May AUend the Program?

The 2021 program is offered to children who will have turned THREE by 30 June 2021 and plan to conOnue aUending Infant Jesus School in 2021 and beyond.

RegulaOons prevent us from taking children unOl they have turned three years of age. Please note that enrolment at the Infant Jesus School Three-Year-Old program does not guarantee a place in the Four-Year-Old Kindergarten Program. Interviews will be conducted for both places.

Interested parents are asked to contact Mrs Cheryl Macpherson at the school office for enrolment forms for 2021 Three-Year-Old program.

Conquering kids’ Techno-Tantrums

by Dr Kristy Goodwin Many of us have witnessed our kids or teens emoOonally combust when asked to switch off their gaming console or put their phone away. I colloquially call these ‘techno-tantrums’. Many of us fret that this signals that they’re ‘addicted’ to technology and find ourselves worrying about why they behave in such intense ways.

So, what makes technology so psychologically appealing for kids and how can we help them to unplug so that screen-Ome doesn’t end in scream Ome?

Technology is so appealing Technology has been intenOonally designed to cater for our kids’ most basic psychological drivers. As humans, our three most basic psychological needs are the need for connecOon, competence and control.

Technology caters for these needs in very clever ways. For example, our need for relaOonal connecOon explains why many of our boys are obsessed with mulO-player video games and girls are infatuated with social media. These online tools have also been designed to help young people experience competencygamers see tangible measures of their performance by their levels of aUainment, or baUles won. Scrolling through YouTube and ‘selecOng’ which video they’ll watch next also enables young people to experience a sense of control and agency over their lives – something they biologically crave.

Here’s what technology does to their brains and bodies Digital technology impacts on children and young people in the following ways:

‘It feels good’ When our kids use a screen it’s usually a pleasurable experience for them. Their brains secrete the neurotransmiUer dopamine, which makes them feel good. This means, when you demand that they turn the device off, you’re terminaOng their producOon of dopamine (pleasure response). It’s beUer to provide a choice of more appealing transiOon acOviOes when you want them to move away from a screen. For example, suggest that they ride their bike, or walk the dog a[er they’ve switched off the device.

‘I want more’ The online world has no stopping cues, so our kids and teens never feel ‘complete’ or ‘done’. They can always refresh social media; conOnue to play to aUain another level in a game; or watch another YouTube clip. This is also referred to as the state of insufficiency.

One parenOng Op that works is to give your children and teens hard end points. Rather than giving them a quanOty of Ome (for example, you can watch an hour of TV today), give them the finish Ome (for example, I’d like you to switch off the TV at 4:30pm).

‘It’s so novel’ Our brains are wired to seek out new and interesOng sOmulus. The online world is always instantly graOfying, fast-paced and requires minimal cogniOve effort. In comparison the offline, real world doesn’t always offer novelty. The real world is a lot slower-paced, and it’s not always instantly rewarding and interesOng like our kids’ digital world.

Ensure your kids and teens have ample Ome to experience boredom. Our brains were never designed to be switched on and processing informaOon as they are in the digital world. OpportuniOes for boredom allow the brain Ome to reset and help our kids become accustomed to not always being ‘switched on’.

We praise you for the light you give our hearts, the light that lets us find great joy together because we become one in you, one in your Spirit, one in awaiOng your promised good.

Grant that we may be your children. May we always find the paths where you can go with us and give us what we cannot give ourselves.

May our whole life glorify you and our every breath belong to you.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ CORNER Parent Survey - Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures Update Survey As announced by the Premier, parents will be permiUed to enter the school grounds as of next week (June 8).

However, it is unclear at this stage, whether parents will be allowed into the classrooms. Therefore, parents choosing to walk their child into the school grounds will need to drop their child at the classroom and then leave the school grounds.

In considering the feedback we have received from parents to date, it is our intenOon to conOnue to operate the School Pick Up and Drop Off in its current format. That is: 1. A drive through adjacent to the Basketball Court for Kindergarten, Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 students.

2. A drive through at the Canteen Carpark for students in Year 3, 4, 5, & 6.

Trinity Sunday (Sunday 7 June) This day recognises and celebrates that one of the Mysteries of our Faith – that God is three persons in one.

These three persons are very familiar to us and we know them through ✦ God the Father who made everything ✦ the Holy Spirit who guides us towards God the Father ✦ and Jesus who shows us the way.

Corpus ChrisF (Sunday 14 June) On this day we take Ome to remember how Jesus gave Himself to us through the Eucharist. The first Ome this was celebrated was at the Last Supper. We conOnue to celebrate this every Ome we receive Jesus in Holy Communion as this also strengthens us to conOnue to share the Good News.

Yesterday, as a school, we focused on LifeLink and how this is ‘Faith in AcOon.’ This week reflect on how this could be conOnued with your families and friends.

Traditions in the Archdiocese of Perth LifeLink 2020

Yesterday we parOcipated in a virtual launch of LifeLink 2020. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton and the ExecuOve Director of Catholic EducaOon WA, Dr Debra Sayce thanked us for our prayers, messages of hope and support to help those in need.

The theme of ‘Together, we WILL make a difference’ is evident in the work of all the LifeLink agencies as they demonstrate Faith in AcOon and provide hope to those in need.

At school we have explored the work of some of the agencies and made some prayers and messages for those in need. We have developed a greater awareness of the needs of others and the amazing work of many people in the Archdiocese of Perth who generously share their gi[s, talents and Ome to help those in need.

COVID-19 Phase 3 of W.A. Roadmap in Infant Jesus Parish We commit Infant Jesus Parish to support and comply with all government direcOves and associated public health advice in our response to this emergency. In accordance with Phase 3 of the W.A. Roadmap our Parish Church will be open at normal Omes. I want to thank all those volunteers who have enabled us to open the church for mass this past week and will enable us to remain open during Phase 3.

Monday to Friday masses: 7.00am and 9.00am Saturdays and Public Holidays: 8.30am Sunday masses: 6.00pm (Saturday), 7.30am, 9.30am and 11.30am (Italian) and 6.00pm Sacrament of ReconciliaFon: Saturday 10- 11am and 5.00 – 5.30pm Up to one hundred (100) people may be present in the church at any one Ome. There needs to be two square metres of floor space per person and a physical distance of 1.5 metres from persons of other households. There is no need to book for weekday mass, but bookings are required to ensure a place for Sunday masses. Priority will be given to those who have booked, but if space is available others will also be admiUed unOl the limit of 100 people is reached.

Please only sit in the marked places. AUendance records are kept with name, contact details and Omes of arrival and departure. The COVID Safety Plan is visible in the entry to the church.

Year

Two Class News

The Year Two’s cheeky monkeys have run away on an adventure. So far they have travelled to the conOnents of South America, North America, Asia, Africa and Europe. The Year Twos have taken the opportunity to learn about the conOnents as they follow Chocolate and Coco’s adventures.

For South America they enjoyed Peruvian hot chocolate and they created their own llamas in Art. They learnt about some of the wonders of Peru, including Machu Picchu and the Rainbow Mountain. They also had a virtual incursion from Columbia. The Year Twos learnt some snappy South American dance moves and explored some of the local community in Bogotá.

In North America the Year Twos learnt about the arOst Andy Warhol and used his arOsOc style to recreate their own soup cans. They made their own s’mores and they were delicious.

The Year Twos found out about the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Grand Canyon and Disney World.

The students followed Chocolate and Coco to the conOnent of Asia as they visited the country of Thailand. They learnt about some of the amazing landmarks in Thailand such as the Phi Phi Islands, the floaOng markets and some amazing temples. The students cooked and ate yummy Pad Thai and created their own Thai On elephant in art.

Last week the monkeys travelled to Africa where they visited the country of Kenya. The Year Twos learnt that the equator runs through Kenya, and that snow falls on the tallest mountain, Mt Kenya! The Year Twos cooked Irio which is made with mashed potato, peas and corn. In Art they painted a silhoueUe of the Kenyan Savannah.

This week the monkeys sent the students a Vlog from France, which is in the conOnent of Europe. They have learnt about the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the palace of Versailles and the Louvre where the Mona Lisa is kept. The students cooked Palmiers, a French pastry, and designed their own packaging for their biscuits. In Art, the students studied Vincent Van Gogh and recreated his famous painOng of sunflowers.

The students can’t wait to see where their cheeky monkeys turn up next!

Year Five Class News Our LifeLink Day acOvity involved watching a great video created by Irene McCormack Catholic College about how LifeLink helps 32,000 WA people in need. The children brainstormed the beneďŹ ts of Lifeline and created a pic collage.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Early Childhood Online Safety Initiative Playing IT Safe has been designed to help parents and carers support their child’s learning in early learning sedngs, by providing access to resources and online play-based acOviOes that they can play with their child.

Playing IT Safe provides parents, carers and their children with a safe pla|orm to play online and learn about the internet. It is important that parents and carers undertake these acOviOes with their child to build trust and an understanding of their role in supervising and approving the content children see and how they interact online (both now, and as they get older).
