i-Read ‘The Principal’s Reading Challenge’

DEAR PARENTS Season on Lent Which type of person are you, a risk taker or as security seeker? Some people really love taking risks as is instanced in the emergence of extreme sports; these par?cipants love the rush of adrenaline in the feeling of escaping the ordinary. However, most of us are not risktakers, but security seekers commiHed to a lifestyle of playing it safe.

Strange as it may seem, Jesus told a story that seemed to encourage risk-taking.

The ‘Parable of the Talents’ tells a story of the wealthy man who was about to go on a long trip. He called his servants and, according to their ability, gave one 5000 gold coins, another 2000 gold coins and the other 1000 gold coins. He told each to take care of what had been given to them.

The first two servants invested the money and made them equal amount, but the third servant buried the money and made nothing. When the wealthy man returned, he applauded the enterprise of the two servants who had made the successful investments and promoted them to posi?ons of greater responsibility.

The third servant he deemed to be useless and threw him out of the household.

Risk-taking is actually part of everyday life and is taken for granted in maHers from food consump?on to travelling by car. It has been said that it’s risky when a plane leaves the runway, but that’s what planes are for. It’s more risky for the plane to sit there and accumulate rust. There are shades of the ‘Parable of the Talents’ in this thinking.

The Season of Lent is upon us again and it is a ?me for us to focus inten?onally on what helps or hinders our commitment to Christ. We need to consider what each of us can do as we are all made in the image of God, but we may not be so Christ-like in our behaviour from ?me to ?me. Maybe this Lent we need to take part in some risk taking to get the best out of ourselves.

Assembly Congratula?ons to both our School Choir and School Band who did a magnificent job of entertaining us last week at the first School Assembly for the year. The students involved with both the School Choir and Band make a huge commitment assis?ng the school in various events and occassions, par?cularly at School Masses, Assemblies and the Catholic School Performing Arts Fes?val later in the year. Many thanks to Miss Claire Condipodero and Mr Sewell as they assist the students to develop their poten?al in the Performing Arts.

i-Read - Principal’s Reading Challenge In 2019, we commenced an exci?ng ini?a?ve called i-Read - ‘The Principal’s Reading Challenge’.

The goal of this ini?a?ve was to inspire all children to love books (and reading) and to be highly mo?vated readers and successful literacy learners. This proved to be very successful last year, so we are con?nuing it in 2020.

This program provides an exci?ng opportunity for all children to be further engaged in reading enabling them to set individual goals and to monitor their own progress. We believe that i-Read ‘The Principal’s Reading Challenge’ will assist in further developing excellent comprehension skills (which is a school focus area this year) that will then be applied across all curriculum areas to improve outcomes and enable all children to flourish.

Over the next few weeks the class teachers will be discussing this ini?a?ve with the students. In class children will be guided in selec?ng an individual reading goal each term through class discussions where teachers will share the books that have been given to the year level so that children can make their own choice. There are 100 books for each year level covering a range of topics and interests. The children will be amazed at the selec?on!

All the books for the year level are stored in a bookcase placed between the two classes to ensure that all children have easy access and can change books as needed. Each child also has an i-Read ‘The Principal’s Reading Challenge’ folder where they will write their reading goal for the term which is then shared with me. This is an individual goal and is focused on achieving their personal best.

Engagement in reading, and choosing a reading goal, has many posi?ve outcomes including: ✴ Improvement in concentra?on, memory, vocabulary and language skills ✴ Improvement in wri?ng ✴ Developing self-esteem and independence – the more you read the more educated you become ✴ Developing imagina?on, crea?vity and ideas ✴ Developing informed opinions and viewpoints

During Week 8 of this term, parents will have the opportunity to meet with their child/ren’s teachers to discuss their progress so far this year. Parents are encouraged to play an ac?ve role in the educa?on of their children and these interviews are an ideal forum in which to help enrich the learning opportuni?es for students and to build partnerships between home and school.

In Western Australia, Harmony Day is celebrated on 21 March every year. It is a day to celebrate our culturally diverse society. In order for everyone to live peacefully and happily in Australia, it is important that everyone feels equal. Differences are not a bad thing, they makes us unique and special.

On Harmony Day, our students may wear something ‘orange’ for a gold coin dona?on on Friday 20 March. This will show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. All money raised will be donated to Caritas.

This year we will con?nue to use Parent Teacher Online (PTO), a web-based and app based online booking system for Parent Teacher mee?ngs. We know that it will save parents ?me and is quite easy to use. Using this system, you will be able to book the interview ?mes that suit you best from any internet-connected computer. A computer will be available in the Library, during school hours, if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere.

A leHer has also been sent today via the school app Connected explaining in more detail how to access PTO. PTO will become acIve for parents to book appointments from Friday 13 March at 2:00pm.

Student Code of Conduct Last year we worked with a number of classes to develop a Student Code of Conduct. From this work the following five key statements were developed: At Infant Jesus School we want to feel supported, safe, respected, included and confident.

1. In order to feel supported, we will help each other through the challenges of life. When someone isn’t feeling this way, or there is conflict, we will set a good example for others and be with that person.

2. In order to feel safe, we will be kind to others and think through our words and ac?ons. When someone isn’t feeling this way, or there is conflict, we will stand up for them.

3. In order to feel respected, we will be listening to others’ ideas and use our manners. When someone isn’t feeling this way, or there is conflict, we will seek help from each other and from our teachers.

4. In order to feel included, we will acknowledge others and their feelings and share our ?me with others. When someone isn’t feeling this way, or there is conflict, we will we will support the person to stand up for themselves.

5. In order to feel confident, we will encourage everyone to have a go and celebrate achievements. When someone isn’t feeling this way, or there is conflict, we will provide suppor?ve words or ac?ons.

We support children to build trust and rapport with each other and with staff. As we move through the year our aim is to con?nue to develop these posi?ve rela?onships and enhance children’s confidence, resilience and self-esteem.

Bullying. No Way! Friday, 20 March, marks the 2020 NaIonal Day of AcIon against Bullying and Violence. It also coincides with Harmony Day which is about everybody belonging. This day aims to encourage inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural background, and celebrate core Australian values. This annual day gives schools a plalorm to say Bullying. No Way! and to reinforce the message that bullying and violence at school (or anywhere) is not okay at school at any ?me.

Paren?ng educator, Michael Grose describes bullying as “an insidious behaviour that transgresses children’s natural right to feel safe and secure.” He explains that it can adversely affect children’s learning, emo?onal well-being, future rela?onships and self-esteem.

It is important to remember that bullying is not to be confused with random acts of violence, conflict, teasing or conflict. According to New South Wales Educa?on and Communi?es, bullying is defined as repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behaviour that is harmful and involves the misuse of power by an individual or group towards one or more persons. The key word here is repeated. Children open tease or fight, and this should not be confused with bullying.

Listed below are a few ?ps for parents regarding Bullying and how we can assist our children: 1. Listen to their story: Children who are bullied need someone to believe their story. Take them seriously and avoid dismissing complaints as tell-tale. Use common sense to differen?ate between bullying and more random, nonselec?ve an?social acts. Kids can be nasty to each other, yet this doesn’t cons?tute bullying.

2. Deal with their feelings A child who is bullied probably feels scared, angry and sad. Boys are more likely to display anger and girls claim they feel sad. The degree of emo?onal intensity is an indicator of the amount of bullying.

Recognise and validate their emo?ons. Let them talk about how they think (remember boys respond beHer to ‘think’ language) and it’s normal to feel sad, scared or just plain confused.

We are legally responsible to report via an electronic program, all absences every day, including con?nual lateness to school. Please make sure you are compliant with this legisla?on and please assist by contac?ng the school by 9.00am of the day of absence. Please also send a note upon return even if you have been contacted by phone from the school.

3. Get the facts: Get a clear picture of what happens, including who is involved, the frequency and what happens prior to any bullying. Get your child to be as specific as possible by asking good ques?ons. An accurate picture will help you determine your next course of ac?on.

Football Season I am not sure if anyone has no?ced but there has been a real is a sense of excitement in the air has this week! Why, you may ask? Well it is Football season again! We have all experienced a bit of a tough ?me over the past six months as we struggled through weekend aper weekend without games of football to watch, or games of football to discuss and dissect! Thankfully, we have had AFLW to watch in recent weeks, and even more noteworthy is that the Dockers and doing so well in this compe??on.

4. Give them coping skills: With a clear picture you can start giving your child some help about how he or she may deal with bullying including using avoidance strategies, being more asser?ve and changing poor body language.

5. Get the school involved: Bullying is best handled when parents and teachers are involved. Approach your school through the appropriate channels (class teacher), make yourself aware of your schools’ an?-bullying procedures and programs. (See School Website)

Thank God things return to normal next week as our famous Australian game is back and we all get the chance to breathe a liHle easier. Looking forward to a BIG season for both of our AFL teams in the West (not really . . . there is only ONE Team)!

Kindergarten 2021 – Applications are Now Due

For further informa?on on the Infant Jesus School Bullying Policy please refer to the school website.

Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2021. Families with children eligible for Kindergarten in 2021 are required to fill out a Kindergarten Enrolment Applica?on Form.

Attendance It is not okay to stay away from school for any reason except legi?mate illness and extreme family circumstances. Any unexplained absence and extended holidays during school ?me, without a note of explana?on, are all considered illegal by the Department of Educa?on and the Federal government.

Infant Jesus School will con?nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of aHendance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica?ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the office.

From my Readings this Week . . .

Is Your Child Ge`ng Enough Sleep?

At this ?me of year, when the first term of the year is drawing to a close, rou?nes are established and clubs, sports and outside school ac?vi?es are well underway, it is natural for children to be ?red at the end of the week. Maintaining sleeping rou?nes is just as important to staying healthy as ea?ng the right foods and being ac?ve.

According to Professor Harlene Hayne, head of the Psychology Department at the University of Otago, increasing the amount of sleep children receive is one of the most powerful strategies for improving their mental health and well-being.

Educator Michael Grose alerts us to the fact that lack of sleep over ?me can lead to sleep depriva?on, which is like jet lag. Lack of sleep can result in irritability; memory lapses and has links to poor mental health including anxiety and depression. He also asserts that when children get enough sleep, confidence and wellbeing improve.

Sleep maximises the brain growth which occurs with toddlers and teens.

Sleep also consolidates learning. Sleep research has shown that the brain prac?ses what it has learned during the day when a child or young person is asleep. So, sufficient sleep consolidates past learning as well as keeps children fresh to maximise their future learning. We can help children to establish good sleep paHerns. Children usually carry good sleep habits into adolescence. If you struggle to get young children to sleep or constantly baHle kids who want to stay up longer, some knowledge of good sleep habits may be useful.

Good Sleep Habits Include: 1. Regular bed?mes: Kids may fight this, but make sure kids keep regular bed?mes during the week and allow them to stay up a liHle later on weekends. Children need between 10 and 12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a minimum of nine hours.

2.

A 45 minute wind-down ?me before bed: This includes: removing TV and other s?muli, calming the child down and limi?ng food intake (and caffeine for teens). The wind-down ?me informs the body clock that sleeping-?me is near.

3.

A bed?me rou?ne: Have a bed?me rou?ne, such as story-reading and teeth cleaning, that signals psychologically that it is ?me for sleep. A set rou?ne means that kids can predict. It also means that some children will fight bed?me, so you need some good strategies in place to get kids to bed and make sure they stay there.

4.

Keeping bedrooms for sleep: Bedrooms that resemble caves are recommended. It gets tricky with mobile phones and other informa?on technology, but it’s smart to keep mobiles and laptops out of bedrooms at sleep-?me. This goes for parents too. Most parents sleep in technology-free bedrooms (apart from a clock-radio) yet their kids will have technology-full rooms.

5.

Maximise the three sleep cues: These include: darkness (maintaining a cave-like bedroom); lowering body temperature (baths can be good for this); and melatonin (work within their cycle).

With mental health being on the agenda for all Australians and New Zealanders there is no beHer start than aHending to good sleep habits. If your kids get less sleep than they should, check out the five habits above and work out which of these you can adjust to move things in favour of them gevng more sleep.

Year 4 – 6 Swimming Lessons CongratulaIons to the Year 4, 5 and 6 for their organisa?onal skills during the swimming lessons at the end of last month.

These lessons only take place once a year and the children are responsible for organising both their swimming ‘gear’, their school sport uniform and what they will eat during breaks between the lessons. They were also responsible for all their own items both at school, on the bus and while they were at Bayswater Waves. It was great to see that there were almost no lost or misplaced items during the four days of lessons demonstra?ng responsibility and good organisa?onal skills.

Good organisa?onal skills – both in and out of the classroom have a posi?ve effect on learning as they allow children to come up with a plan and follow through to get work done. This skill can be transferred to any aspect of learning and problem solving where they may need to think crea?vely and laterally to answer a ques?on and delve deeper into their learning.

NAPLAN Information

The challenge is to summarise in their own words what has been read.

Last week the parents of our Year Three and Five children received informa?on regarding the NAPLAN tes?ng for 2020. This brochure highlights informa?on for parents of children in Year Three and Five in regard to the NAPLAN Program for 2020. Please read this informa?on. If you have any ques?ons or concerns about NAPLAN this year please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher to arrange an appropriate interview ?me.

A further challenge may emerge when the main idea is implied. This requires children to pay careful aHen?on to the text by analysing the details to infer the main idea.

All that is needed is to find a book, perhaps one that has not been read before and start reading.

Remember - the books can be shared and parents are encouraged to read to and with their children. When having the book read to them children need to listen carefully to iden?fy the main idea. They are always invited to look at the text and the illustra?ons and to reread the book to enhance their knowledge of what has been read.

Reading Comprehension Finding the Main Idea Finding the main idea is an essen?al reading comprehension skill. Students who can iden?fy the main idea will benefit from it far beyond school. From the small print of an insurance document to wri?ng a book review, the ability to comprehend a text and iden?fy its central idea is a crucial life skill.

Finding the main idea requires the reader to iden?fy the topic of a piece of wri?ng and then uncover what the writer wants us to know about that topic. It is a strategy that beginning readers use to levels by loca?ng the main idea in a sentence before building up to loca?ng it in a longer paragraph. As students gradually build their confidence in iden?fying the main idea in paragraphs, they will soon be ready to move onto longer texts in the form of chapters and fulllength books.

To find the main idea in all text types students need to iden?fy the most relevant informa?on from the text and use it to develop what they perceive the main idea to be.

Lent The Season of Lent

In Kindy Blue last week we received the ashes from Mr Hille. We learnt that the ashes represent Jesus’ love for us. This week we are discussing that Jesus shows us his love through the story of The Washing of the Feet. Being a friend means we can also show love to others in the way we treat them.

During Lent, in prepara?on for Easter, we focus on prayer, almsgiving and fas?ng. We pray to become closer to God, we give alms to help others and fast or go without things to focus on further developing our friendship with God and others.

When praying we would o par?cipate in the Eucharist each week par?cipate in spontaneous prayer, for example, by finding a quiet place to ‘talk’ (pray) to God o pray some of the tradi?onal prayers we know well, for example, the Our Father and the Hail Mary o par?cipate in prayer at the beginning and end of the day , for example to show our gra?tude to God, or ask for his help or pray for others and their needs o say grace before and aper meals

In Year 1B we have been very busy learning about Lent and Easter. First, we all created our Lenten Promise and shared this with our parents by uploading our first video to Seesaw! We picked something we will take up for Lent to help those we love. This week we are learning about all the wonderful things that happen across the world with Project Compassion. We have explored different communi?es where people need help to provide their children with clothes to wear to school, seeds to grow vegetables and even chicks to help with farming. Together we have chosen to aim to raise $150 for Project Compassion and are planning a fundraiser for Week 8. Watch this space!

When fas?ng we go without things that we like to focus more on our friendship with God. This might include o less screen ?me for example, less computer games and TV ?me, to spend more ?me with family members o limi?ng lollies and treats to give this to those in need o making an effort to eat healthy food – even if we might prefer something else.

During prayer, Year 2B have reflected upon the Project Compassion stories of Shirley and Pharny.

We have seen how Project Compassion has helped these women develop skills that will enhance their lives. This week we held a fundraiser selling icy poles. We were very proud to raise over $350 which will be donated to Project Compassion.

When almsgiving we might o help others by doing good work and by giving special aHen?on to helping out in the family, for example, younger brothers and sisters. o be observant and include others in play, for example, those children who may be alone o helping out with school work rather than having free ?me. o collect money for Project Compassion

Lent and Project Compassion

As a school community we have been focusing on Lent and the tradi?ons of this season which include prayer, almsgiving and fas?ng. Classes have also looked more closely at those in need especially countries and stories highlighted through Project Compassion.

Year 3B began their Lenten reflec?on by making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. They then aHended Ash Wednesday Mass and discussed in class, the meaning of Lent and the three tradi?ons of Lent. Individually, the children created a Lenten promise that either required them to pray, give up something or show love and care for others. To accompany their Lenten promise, the students drew a picture of themselves with ashes on their forehead in the sign of a cross, to represent penance.

Bushfire Appeal On Thursday 20 February we were encouraged to wear free dress and bring a gold coin dona?on for the Bushfire Appeal.

We thank all families for their generosity in suppor?ng this appeal. With all the dona?ons we raised just over $1000.

Sacramental Program Thank you to all the families who aHended the Eucharist-Enrolment Masses last weekend.

As we are now into our third week of Lent and we make progress through the Religious Educa?on guidelines, Year 5B have been learning about the consequences of our ac?ons. We have been given a variety of opportuni?es to reflect on, discuss and learn about the importance of striving to become closer to God through prayer, fas?ng and almsgiving. The Year 5s were inspired to raise money for Project Compassion, by opening stalls to sell different items, including handmade origami, books and treats.

A gentle reminder to all the parents/guardians who wish to enrol their child for the Sacrament of First Eucharist to please submit your child’s enrolment form with the necessary aHachments as soon as possible as the program has already started. The due date for enrolment form submission is on Thursday 12 March. Thank you.

In Year Six Blue, we have been learning about people who are in need all over the world. We have discussed different ways to raise money for Project Compassion. At home we have been fas?ng from things we like and using the money we would have spent on that item to donate to Project Compassion. As a class, we have decided that we would like to raise $1000. This amount will go towards training 200 young people in beekeeping and the remaining amount towards buying vegetable seeds for families in Cambodia.

The Project Compassion story this week highlights Pharny from Cambodia. A few years ago she had to leave her family and her village to find work in the city as she was unable to make a living from growing rice.

Today, through Project Compassion, she has learnt about and implemented more produc?ve farming, irriga?on and water management to combat the drought. She has shared this with her village and everyone is now using her knowledge and exper?se.

Year Three Class News This term our HASS topic is ‘Our Community’. The children have been busy bees in Year Three designing a collage backwall display, learning how to define what a community is and naming a community they belong to. These Innova?ve Learners used their technology skills to create either a ChaHerPix or Clips video based on the leaders in our community. Scan the QR codes to learn about who our local community leaders are. Be entertained!

They were all worried because they had forgoHen food. Suddenly, they heard the big boat leaving to start the fireworks! It was 7:59pm when… Archie remembered there were food vans that had arrived at 6pm. “I know how to solve this food problem!”

She said. Soon they all had yummy food and everyone was calm again. Finally, everyone felt happy. Archie learnt that things don’t always go your way so there is no point worrying. It’s always best to stay calm and find a solu?on.

Australia Day Disaster By Chloe Boom! Went the fireworks. Tahlia was launching fireworks into the sky. Tahlia had short hair, brown eyes and was very small. Tahlia and her friend Chloe were at a party celebra?ng Australia Day at the park. Tahlia and Chloe went for a walk along the river. They began to feel like something was wrong.

“Tahlia, I think there is a problem,” exclaimed Chloe.

“No, everything is going to be fine,” whispered Tahlia.

Narra?ve wri?ng has been a focus this term in English. The children have been working hard to follow the text structure correctly. They have also tried hard to include dialogue, onomatopoeias and descrip?ve language. Checkout some narra?ves that have been published by our crea?ve liHle authors.

Great Firework Show By Seth Splash! Jimmy was having a great ?me in the pool un?l his mum shouted, “Jimmy I have two ?ckets for the firework show tonight.” It was Australia Day. Jimmy had black hair, was super tall and he was a teenager. Jimmy stood up and checked the date. He suddenly jumped up with joy.

Tahlia and Chloe were heading back to the party.

Suddenly, they heard a loud crash! The girls looked around and they no?ced that the crash came from the fireworks. The fireworks had gone the wrong way and had landed on the ground. Everyone at the party shouted, “Ahhh!” Tahlia and Chloe looked at each other and wondered what to do. Luckily, the girls found a fire ex?nguisher close by. Tahlia took the fire ex?nguisher and used it to put out the fire.

“Hooray!” Everyone shouted. The girls had successfully put the fire out and had saved the Australia Day fireworks show.

That night, Jimmy and his mum both went to the beach. When they were there mum suddenly forgot the BBQ in the van. She said, “Jimmy stay there I’ll go get the BBQ!” As mum lep, Jimmy saw his friends, so Jimmy went to his friends Rob and Tom. Jimmy said, “Hey guys!” Rob had some chips and Tom had some gummies and juice.

Tahlia and Chloe were so happy that they had saved the Australia Day fireworks show. Both the girls had learnt it is always helpful to have a fire ex?nguisher close by.

It was 7:45pm. The boat was moving with fireworks, but three big fireworks fell off the boat. Then the fireworks went off towards the beach and set a fire on the beach. Jimmy ran to his mum and shouted, “Call 000.” Mum quickly called the fire department.

Soon they came and put out the first and Jimmy and his mum watched the rest of the fireworks.

Jimmy and his mum were so happy that they made it out alive. They learnt that they should stay away from fireworks because the fireworks might cause a fire and travel to them.

Australia Day Problem By Ariel Boom! A liHle girl called Archie was at the foreshore to see the fireworks at 8pm. Archie was eight years old and had orange hair with blue eyes. When they arrived, they saw big food trucks and a big boat.

She was soon sivng on a sop rug with her friends and her mum and dad. They enjoyed the ?me un?l… they no?ced that they had forgoHen food!

Year Four Class News Kaya! This means ‘Hello’ in Noongar. During our Integrated lessons we have been learning all about Aboriginal Peoples before SeHlement. We have used OneNote to research and plan an Informa?on Report including facts about the Dreaming, Totems, Art and Sacred Sites. We have incorporated this into our art lessons by crea?ng our own Australian Na?ve Birds using the Dream?me Story ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours as inspira?on.

In prepara?on for the Infant Jesus Swimming Carnival we completed two days of swimming at Bayswater Waves. Our focusing was on improving our swimming technique and endurance skills. We had a lot of fun at the pools and are looking forward to our first Year 4 to 6 Swimming Carnival.

Overall, we have had a very busy, but exci?ng start to the year!

Sport News Wow, what a busy couple of weeks it has been in sport! Here’s what’s been happening so far: Year 4 - 6 Swimming Sessions The Year 4, 5 and 6 students started the term with their swimming sessions. The Bayswater Swim School facilitated these sessions and took the students through their stroke development and concluded with the 50m ?me trials. The children were fantas?c in their efforts and showed great determina?on in their ?me trials. Bring on the Fac?on Swimming Carnival!

Students will need to wear their swimwear to school and bring a towel, recess and lunch and a bag to carry them in (NO canteen orders).

As this is an outdoor venue, hats and sunblock are mandatory.

Our Year 6 Leaders will be providing extra support on the day, both in and out of the water.

Parents are welcome to aHend the Swimming Carnival, but must provide their own transport and pay the spectator fee as set by Bayswater Waves.

The program will be released shortly.

This year we will be concluding the carnival with a Teacher/Student/Parent race. If there are any parents who are interested in forming a team please let me know!

Morning Skipping Star?ng Week 7, we will have a morning skipping program on the basketball court run by the Wellness Ministry. Every Tuesday and Wednesday morning from 8am come on down to the basketball court for some fun, fitness and skipping!

‘Freo Fundamentals’ and ‘Let’s Go Freo’ Program Last week the Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 children have commenced the Fremantle Dockers Football programs. Pre-Primary and Year 1 children are taking part in the ‘Freo Fundamentals program. Freo Fundamentals, with its emphasis on fun and enjoyment, introduces simple play ac?vi?es designed to fit into outdoor play sessions that promote fundamental motor, communica?on and social skills. Freo Fundamentals has been designed to match the needs of young students and develop competency in fundamental play skills within the WA Curriculum Framework Outcomes.

The Year 2 children are involved in the ‘Let’s Go Freo program. This program is split into two sessions. Session one is the player visit from Fremantle Dockers AFLW. Players will run a fun introductory football session focusing on fundamental motor skills and in session two, a Fremantle Dockers player will conduct an interac?ve in-class session on Healthy Lifestyle.

The children have been loving their football clinics and developing some awesome new football skills!

Year 4-6 Cricket Sporting Schools Program Last week the Year 4-6 students commenced the Cricket Spor?ng Schools program. This is a 4-week program conducted by Cricket Australia and is made up of prac?cal cricket ac?vi?es that focus on fun, fitness and friends with the aim of increasing the par?cipant’s confidence and competence in the sport of Cricket. Daniel, from Cricket Australia, came out and led the first week of the program. The students showed great enthusiasm and enjoyment whilst par?cipa?ng in these fun ac?vi?es and we can’t wait for the second session!

Friday morning swimming training: Our Friday morning swimming training is in full swing now. It has been great to see so many children aHending the early morning swimming sessions and working hard to improve their swimming. Training will con?nue all term with our final session on Friday, 27 March. It’s not too late to join, if any child wants to start training please email me on lauren.jenkins@cewa.edu.au.

Year Two Fremantle Football Club Incursion On Tuesday aper lunch the Year Twos met some AFLW Dockers players. Their names were Roxy and Anya.

We met the players because we are learning about footy in sport.

First, we got to do some shuing with the ball. We had to make a ďŹ gure eight between our legs.

Next, we learnt how to throw and catch the footballs. This is called a handball. We did it alone and then with a partner. It was called Footy Circus and it was fun.

Then, we played a game called Simon Says. You had to do what they said. When they said ball you had to grab the ball before your partner did.

Finally, we sat down and listened to jokes and ques?ons.

We loved our incursion with Fremantle Football Club!

Choir and Band News The Choir and the Concert Band have both had a great start to the school year, receiving their well-deserved 2020 Choir and Band badges at the first assembly of the year last Thursday. The Band also performed two songs at this assembly, which was a lovely way for them to share their talents with the school community.

This year we have welcomed 31 new Choir members who were successful in audi?oning for the Infant Jesus School Choir! We now have 53 members in the Choir, and our rehearsal sessions and prepara?ons for the Catholic Performing Arts Fes?val are well underway.

The Choir sang at our first Family Mass on Saturday evening – they all sang beau?fully and did an outstanding job represen?ng Infant Jesus School. Thank you to all the Choir and family members who aHended the Family Mass, I was so pleased to see almost all of our Choir members present at this Mass and the commitment shown by the students and families! I look forward to a wonderful year ahead of music making.

Student Ministry News Pastoral Care Ministry This is the Pastoral Care Ministry leaders who have chosen to help us make our school beHer than it already is for Semester One 2020. We hopefully will be upda?ng all of you during the next couple of weeks at future assemblies. We have been preparing to take part in everything we do and we are so eager to share to you what we think is best for our school so far! Our Pastoral care team members have been talking about con?nuing the Brothers Ollies Ringpulls for Wheelchairs, star?ng a LifeLink day Appeal and maybe one appeal per term for St Vincent De Paul! The Pastoral Care Ministry is all about having empathy towards others, being kind and respec?ng others at all ?mes. By showing these things we will be need to be doing some fundraisers and dona?ng some things to anybody who needs it.

For doing this we would like you to par?cipate as well! We know that they’re many people that need some help or happiness in their lives and we would like some people to do that everyday, like you all should be kind and help them out even if it’s just something like smiling at somebody if they are upset!

Christian Service Ministry PROJECT COMPASSION 2020 At this ?me last year, our total for Project Compassion was around $1750. This year, as in the past, classes and groups of children have planned fundraising stalls that will hopefully raise this total beyond this amount #ExceedingExpecta?ons.

LENT is our opportunity to think beyond ourselves and follow in the footsteps of Jesus, to love one another and to serve those who most need our help. CHANGE is in our HANDS! A dona?ons thermometer will be displayed in the piazza to indicate where our dona?ons are currently at by the end of each week. There will also be an opportunity to see what our dona?ons can provide supported by the Project Compassion ini?a?ves.

Please give generously and support our 2020 Project Compassion ini?a?ves during this LENTEN SEASON and help our Infant Jesus Community make the CHANGE.

A Book Club Organiser plays an important role in our school and is involved in collating and returning the orders to Scholastic and distributing the ordered books to classrooms — the task is that easy!

Running Book Club enables our school to earn Scholastic Rewards, which can be used to purchase additional learning and literacy resources for classrooms. You would also be helping provide children and families with access to age-appropriate and affordable books all year round.
