It is a day that we recognise, honour and acknowledge our heritage and the tradiAons of our school. It is a special Ame to appreciate our past and all the people who in different ways have contributed to the vibrant community that we have today.

The aim of Infant Jesus Day is to gather together as a community to celebrate the journey of Infant Jesus School over Kme. This year our theme is ‘A LEADing Learning School’.

Our theme calls us to be the best people we can be.

It challenges us to be be?er tomorrow than we were today. Schools are communiAes where staff, parents and students come together for the common good, which encompasses the welfare of all and the educaAonal progress of each individual student. As a school, we try and support parents in the educaAon of their children. As parents, we are role models not only to our children, but others associated with this school.

For our school community to offer an environment of harmony, goodwill, opportunity for individual development and the exercise of ChrisAan virtues, it is important that we constantly remind ourselves to think about what we are saying and how we go about saying it, parAcularly in the presence of children. We look forward to our celebraAon next week with much pride, but also a sense of graAtude for all the people that have worked so hard to make Infant Jesus School what it is today.

The day will commence with a Whole School Community Mass in the school hall at 9.00am. Following the Mass there will be a morning tea which will be provided by the Infant Jesus School P&F for the parents and guests to enjoy.

Following morning tea, there will be a Choir and Band performance to experience our school’s amazing talented musicians. Shortly a\er the performances, parent and guest are invited to our ‘Open Classrooms’ session which will enable everyone to experience the creaAvity and learning environments at Infant Jesus School.

It is important that parents sign only their own child out of their classroom (with the classroom teacher) and return them to the classroom teacher by lunchAme. Then we will begin to assemble for our picnic lunch for students and parents, provided by the P&F, on the oval. For catering purposes, please ensure you have registered your a?endance.

This will be reflected in the displays set up in the hall and is the focus of the ‘quiz’. This is an opportunity to work with your children scanning QR codes and listening to voice recordings whilst viewing images from 1954 unAl the present day. There will be an acAvity sheet provided for this acAvity and all parAcipants will go in a prize draw to win some special Infant Jesus School merchandise!

Contingency in Case of Rain If it does rain on Infant Jesus Day we will try and remain with the same schedule with the following adjustments: • Parents may join children who are eaAng lunch in their classrooms (this is to facilitate for children and staff seing up stalls in the Undercover Areas and the Hall) • Mini Fair – venue for all acAviAes – Hall and Undercover Areas • Normal classes will resume at 2.00pm Reminders: • Parents must sign students out of the class and then sign students back in so teachers are aware of students no longer in the classroom. If you are taking your child home before 3pm they must also be signed out of the classroom.

• Morning Tea in the hall at recess Ame will be for parents only.

• The canteen will not be open for regular orders at recess or lunch, but each student will be provided with a sausage sizzle lunch.

School History – Infant Jesus Week Infant Jesus School was established in 1954 by the Dominican Sisters to support the Catholic families in the Parish and to provide a quality Catholic EducaAon for the community. The first School was opened on a site in Walter Road and was called St Paul’s. The school opened with an enrolment of 22 children. The two teachers in charge of the school were Sr Joseph and Sr Dominic.

In 1956 the Carmelite Fathers took over the parish. By the end of 1960 the school in Walter Road had become too small and was unsuitable as children were now enrolled in the school from Year 1 to Year 7. Late in 1960 a four-acre block was purchased at the corner of Smith and Russell Streets and a new building was built at a cost of 14 500 pounds. The new school had four classrooms and was built in plain white bricks.

The Dominican Order – Motto “ Veritas” (Truth) Dominic Guzman founded the Dominican Order in Prouilhe and Toulouse in Southern France between 1206 and 1216. Now referred to as ‘The Dominican Family’, the order comprises Friars, Sisters, Nuns, Dominican Lay men and women, the Dominican Youth Movement, Dominican Volunteer Movement and countless other groups who lay claim to the charism of preaching the gospel.

The Dominican Mission, which we proudly inherit, is to study, explore and discover be?er, ever more effecAve and newer ways to disseminate the Gospel message of Truth.

The logo of the school up unAl the late 80’s was that of the Dominican order because of their close involvement in the teaching staff of the school. Black reminds us that self-discipline and penance are a necessary part of ChrisAan life. White is the symbol of innocence inspiring us not to sin. Veritas sums up the whole idea of the mo?o – Truth.

The Carmelites – Faith – Carmelite Gathering Place The rule of life given to the Carmelites by St. Albert Avogadro between the years 1206 – 1214, was finally approved as the true and proper Rule of Carmel by Innocenzo in 1247 and later underwent miAgaAons which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that it is basic for a Carmelite to “live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ. To live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ, the Carmelites bind themselves especially to: • develop the contemplaAve dimension of their life, in an open dialogue with God • pray together or alone several Ames a day • do manual work, as Paul the Apostle did • live as brothers in poverty, placing in common what li?le they may have • love the Church and all people – Celebrate the Eucharist every day • conform their will to that of God, seeking the will of God in faith, in dialogue and through their acAons.

The core value of love underpins all the Dominican and Carmelite values. At Infant Jesus School we recognise the importance of Jesus’ greatest commandment to ‘love one another.’

We recognise the Carmelite and Dominican sisters and religious who established and developed our school.

We also acknowledge the many staff members, children, families and friends who have contributed in so many ways. We pray that their Ame as part of our Infant Jesus family has helped them to grow into God centred and Jesus focused people who make a difference to our world. Above all this, we conAnue to put our faith and trust in Jesus as the cornerstone of the community we strive to build.

The logo has the theme of the cross as the centre of the universe. The cross is in a central posiAon beneath the stars of the Southern Cross. The circles behind the cross represent the sun, the earth and the moon. The cross stands on a semi-circular mountain which is Mount Carmel.

In the Carmelite tradiAon, coming from the inspiraAon of St. John of the Cross, the goal of life is seen as the ascent of Mount Carmel which is the place of union with Christ in faith, in hope and in love.

Today, we are very fortunate to have school faciliAes that are quite remarkable. Our students and staff are very fortunate and blessed to be educated and work in a school like Infant Jesus. We give thanks on Infant Jesus Day to all those who have gone before us and contributed in some way to make Infant Jesus School what it is today.

Not only does this keep your partner in the communicaAon loop, it helps you work as a united front.

From My Readings This Week…

CreaKng a Consistent ParenKng Storyline “My partner needs to hear this!”

This is typical of many comments I’ve been hearing lately from parAcipants at our Anxious Kids seminars and workshops. It’s a healthy recogniAon that parent consistency is a significant element in successful parenAng, parAcularly when facing a child’s behavioural or wellbeing challenge. It’s also recogniAon that one of the biggest challenges for many couples is creaAng the same parenAng storyline. It’s a common challenge.

Defer to your partner Kids have a habit of puing their parents on the spot, parAcularly with issues such as going out or buying the latest fad. Rather than responding to children’s requests yourself, get into the habit of deferring to your partner. Not only does this keep your partner in the communicaAon loop, it helps you work as a united front.

You may be strict, while your partner is lenient. You may value family mealAme highly, while your partner is ambivalent about breaking bread as a family.

Share insights with your partner into your own childhood and family These types of reflecAve conversaAons can lead to a deeper level of understanding and o\en reveal why you both feel strongly about different parenAng ma?ers.

Differences in parenAng are natural, reflecAng past parenAng experiences, gender differences and personal experiences of children. They are a sign of independent thinking, and can provide a sense of balance to family life.

Differences can be stressful Different approaches can cause discomfort, stress and anxiety to one or both parents, parAcularly when communicaAon and empathy levels are down.

Divide areas of responsibility Don’t keep all the responsibiliAes to yourself. Bring your partner into the loop, and give them a share of the parenAng jobs.

In some cases, the differences can lead to inconsistent parenAng where there is no agreement on rules and standards of behaviour and inconsistent follow-through when kids behave poorly. It’s like driving a car when there are two sets of road rules.

There’d be accidents in the first five minutes.

Similarly, there is chaos in a family when there’s more than one set of rules. The rules and boundaries the govern children’s behaviour and family life need to be agreed upon.

Communicate concerns to your partner about differences. Avoid disagreeing openly in front of the children. Find a Ame later to air any concerns you may have and generate alternate strategies or ideas for your partner to try.

CreaKng the same storyline Agreeing to the same parenAng storyline as your partner takes work. It can be done whether you and your partner live together or not. Here are some ideas to help Keep your partner informed It helps if the primary parent can keep partners informed about what’s going on in children’s lives.

These can include updates about behaviour, educaAonal achievements and their general wellbeing.

Work out your family brand.

In my book Thriving, I showed parents how to establish a strong family brand. That is, work out the type of family atmosphere you’d like to establish; the values and aitudes that are important to you; your preferred parenAng style and idenAfy the family tradiAons and rituals you’d like to nurture.

From my experience, parents can get away with parental differences when kids are young, however it can become a big problem in adolescence. Some teenagers are become adept at driving a wedge between parents who are on different wavelengths. They generally go to the parent who will give them the answer they require when it comes to the tricky areas such as going out, access to alcohol and relaAonship issues.

That’s why one of the greatest gi\s you can give your children is the consistency they experience when both parents work together using the same parenAng storyline.

Performing Arts During the next few weeks students from Infant Jesus School will parAcipate in the Catholic Schools Performing Arts FesAval. Children will represent the school in the Choral (School Choir) and in the Liturgical secAons of the fesAval. The fesAval includes students from Catholic schools around the state. It is a Ame of great excitement for our budding musicians as they share their hard work and talent, through voice or on instruments, with the wider community.

Staying Healthy in Winter Winter is o\en a welcome change in Western Australia a\er our long, hot summers.

But while we live in a temperate climate, winter in most parts means significant drops in temperatures, greater rainfall and storms.

when we listen, speak, read, and write. When we are listening we need to know to understand what we hear. Speaking consists of the words we use when we speak. Reading focuses on the words we need to know to understand what we read and wriAng consists of the words we use to make our wriAng interesAng and informaAve for the reader.

Vocabulary is important for reading readers o\en use the words they hear orally to make sense of the words they see in print. Kids who hear more words spoken at home learn more words and have larger vocabularies. This larger vocabulary pays off exponenAally as a child progresses through school.

If Your Child Is Unwell Children who have influenza-like-illness should not a?end school unAl they are well. Parents should not send their child to school if they are unwell. Fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose or nasal congesAon are all flu like symptoms. The children should stay away from school unAl they are completely recovered.

As an example, what happens when a child comes to the word ‘dig’ in a book. As they begin to figure out the sounds represented by the le?ers d, i, g, they recognises that the sounds make up a very familiar word that they have heard and said many Ames. It is harder for a beginning reader to figure out words that are not already part of their speaking (oral) vocabulary.

Reinforce Hygiene Messages Children should be told there are simple steps that they can take to help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illness such as influenza.

These include: • Wash hands frequently (alcohol-based hand cleaners are useful if soap and water is not easily accessed), especially a\er coughing and sneezing.

Vocabulary is important for reading comprehension as readers can find it very difficult (or impossible) to understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. As children learn to read more advanced texts, they learn the meaning

of new words that are not part of their oral vocabulary.

Younger children learn the meanings of most words through everyday experiences including • engaging in daily in oral language

Young children learn word meanings through conversaAons with other people, especially adults.

As they engage in these conversaAons, children o\en hear adults repeat words several Ames. They also may hear adults use new and interesAng words. The more oral language experiences children have, the more word meanings they learn.

Ask your child to esAmate how many of a grocery item (for example, a type of fruit or vegetable, bread or pet food) your family will need for the week. Ask, “Why do you think that amount will be needed?” At the end of the week, have your child count the number actually used.

The EucharisAc Prayer is the highpoint of the Mass and it is also quite long. This week we focus on the beginning of this prayer.

The EucharisAc Prayer begins with the priest saying “The Lord be with you,” and everyone responding ‘And with your Spirit.’ We are then invited to turn to the Lord in prayer. The priest then asks us to li\ our hearts to the Lord and to give thanks and praise to God. This part of the EucharisAc Prayer is the introducAon which gives a specific reason for our thanksgiving. The next part is prayed by the priest alone and it changes daily depending on the season and the theme of the Mass.

LaAn, on the 1960 corner-stone of the former parish church, now the Parish Centre. Fr Hilary gave the parish this Atle because of the devoAon of Sts Teresa and John of the cross to the Infant Jesus.

Our shrine of the Infant Jesus being held by Mary with Sts Teresa and John of the Cross leading us to him illustrates our dedicaAon. It has been understood that flowers were not to be put in front of this icon. This is a misunderstanding. So, I encourage everyone to visit the shrine and pray to the Infant Jesus, his Mother and the saints for our Church at this Ame. Flowers express our love and devoAon. As long as they are not too big, or touch the icon, they are very suitable!

The beginning part of the EucharisAc Prayer concludes with the Holy, Holy, Holy in which everyone joins the song of the angels giving praise to the Father in heaven. It is one of the oldest parts of the Mass. A\er we sing the Holy, Holy we kneel for we realise the presence of God and the sacredness of this part of the celebraAon. Next Ame you are at Mass may be tomorrow at Infant Jesus Day. Listen carefully a\er the Priest invites us to pray. As it is the Feast of St Rose (one of our facAon saints) the prayer focuses thanking God for the example of faith that she given to us.

Saint Rose (1586-1617) Lima (Red Faction) Feast Day: 23 August Isabel de Flores was born in Lima, Peru. Her skin was so so\ and pink that they called her Rose and that became the name she was known by. Rose joined the Order of Saint Dominic when she was twenty. She also worked to help her parents support their family of eight children. In addiAon to this, Rose also opened a free hospital for the poor who had no access to medical aid.

Lima is a coastal city and was o\en a?acked by pirates. In one incident the pirates got through a navy blockade which was trying to protect the city.

The pirates stormed the cathedral where the women and children were sent for safety. When the pirates crashed though the door, Rose faced them fearlessly, standing directly before the altar.

The pirates were so taken aback, they le\ the city without harming anyone. Rose became the most celebrated person in Lima. This had li?le effect on her and she conAnued her work regardless.

However, long hours of work took their toll.

At the age of thirty, she got ill and died. All of Lima grieved for a woman they believed had saved their city.

At Infant Jesus School it is our aim to ensure all children become successful readers as reading is also very important for many other learning areas. Reading is also important for life – long a\er children leave school.

Care Bags - Because Children In Care Matter In 2018, 1095 children were taken into protecAve care - that’s three children a day. O\en they arrive without anything but the clothes they are wearing. Care Bags is an iniAaAve to provide these children with a backpack of essenAal item which they can call their very own. This gives the children some sense of place and control of their situaAon. This iniAaAve was started and is run by a 100% volunteer effort and relies purely on donaAons from generous supporters. A policy of the Care Bags iniAaAve is that all items, including backpacks, are brand new. This tells the children that this gi\ is especially bought for them and is not a hand-me-down.

If you have children’s clothing (size 1-16) , so\ toys, backpacks small comfort items (hair bands, colouring books, card games etc) at home which are brand new, but not needed, you could drop them off at the parish office to be included in a pack for a child. If you would like to make up your own complete pack to donate to a child, there is a complete list of items on the poster on the “News” board in the foyer - or check out their Facebook page - “Care Bags - because children in care ma?er.”

Pre-Primary Class News

CLASS NEWS

The students have had a very producAve term building on a number of skills and concepts through many play-based learning experiences. They have been interested in many of the different types of animals they have seen throughout our books, so therefore we have integrated this theme into our learning.

The children have conAnued to be immersed in literacy tasks that have helped them to become moAvated readers and writers. They have enjoyed reading various informaAve and imaginaAve big books about animals and then including some learnt facts into their wriAng. The students have conAnued to take home reading books and it has been lovely to see the students excited about choosing a book and having the opportunity to share the reading of this book with their family. The children have conAnued parAcipaAng in the Sound Waves phonics program, where they are consolidaAng their understanding of le?ers and sounds as well as being introduced to digraphs and common high frequency words. This has assisted them with their reading and wriAng. In MathemaAcs, the students have conAnued to astound us with their ability to formulate and read some very complex pa?erns. They have been working hard to form numbers correctly and recognize the number words from one to ten. The students have also been exposed to the concept of addiAon and have discussed and used different strategies to assist them in geing the correct answer. This week we will be tackling subtracAon, using a number of concrete materials and some interesAng number stories.

We were shocked to find that our classroom had been burgled and the culprit was the Number Taker. He was holding our even numbers for ransom and would only return them if we wrote him a le?er persuading him otherwise. The numbers are yet to be returned.

The students have been thoroughly engaged in learning about the Past and the Present in HumaniAes and Social Sciences. They have been intrigued to see the way people lived in the past and how there have been many changes in what we wear, the toys we play with, the way we communicate, the houses we live in and the transport that was used. The students were parAcularly fascinated with the historical objects that their peers brought to class that had significant value to their families. They were very enthusiasAc about sharing the informaAon and we learnt so much about their families’ past.

Kindergarten Class News The kindy children have returned to term 3 with a sense of wonder and curiosity about the learning experiences set up around gardens and planAng in the classroom. There is a real buzz of excitement in the room as we start our journey exploring God’s garden. We have planted some seeds and have been watching them grow into seedlings and plants. The plants are watered each day and put in the sun outdoors to help them grow. We have noAced that they are all growing at different rates, just as we have grown in our own individual way.

Over the last few weeks we have created a worm farm to help us learn about sustainability and how we can all contribute to helping our environment. As most of the children’s lunches are presented in a bento style lunchbox, we have minimised the plasAcs we use each day.

Therefore, the next step for Kindy was to introduce a means of breaking down our food scraps that can be?er our environment. We decided that a worm farm would be a great way of doing this. We have also invited the Year 6 Sustainability Ministry to join with us in our cause.

Last week we celebrated Book Week. The children dressed up in their favourite book characters and a?ended the Book Week assembly with the whole school. What a great day it was!

This week we are preparing to celebrate our Dads. In week 6 we have invited them to join us for a special Father’s Day Kindy morning, which includes a Bunnings incursion around gardening. We are excited to show our Dads how we learn and how proud we are of them.

This term has been very busy as we have introduced morning groups, in which the children’s learning is focused in the areas of Literacy and MathemaAcs. This group work enables us to focus on specific skills for different children. Our group work is displayed in our classroom.

It has been an amazing journey already and its only week 5! We look forward to the following weeks events!

Our Book Week CelebraAons have been a huge success. The children have enjoyed the Book Week book fair, compeAAons in the library and the book parade.

Everyone was highly entertained by the fabulous costumes the children (and the teachers) wore at the Book Parade Assembly. Well done to all the family members who created them.

Sport News Sporting Schools: IAAF Kids Athletics Program This term, the Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 children have been taking part in a specialised IAAF Kids AthleAcs program. This program is a parKcipaKonbased program that focuses on the development of running, jumping and throwing skills through fun and engaging games. The children have enjoyed learning and developing these new skills and can’t wait to put them into pracAse at the AthleAcs Carnival.

On Wednesday evening 14 August, parents of the Year Two students came along to an informaAon evening about the Bring Your Own iPad Device Program currently operaAng in Years Three – Six. New and important informaAon was given to parents about device requirements and app distribuAon for 2020 Year Three students only. InformaAon from this night regarding the portal and iPad requirements will be sent to parents over the next few weeks via Seesaw.
