FROM THE PRINCIPAL Year Six Camp Well, all our students arrived safely at the Woodman Point Camp School.

Infant Jesus Day This year we will celebrate Infant Jesus Day on Friday 28 August.

Dear Parents Do you think that you are a model for your children, as to the type of person they will grow to be? It would seem that even if we don’t see ourselves that way, there is no escape for us: “It’s not only children who grow. Parents do, too. As much as we wish to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching to see what we do with ours.” Joyce Maynard. Human beings learn primarily through modelling; in fact, we can’t avoid being an example to our children, whether good or bad. So, being a good example is indeed important to our children. Through parent modelling, children gain informa6on that helps them to iden6fy themselves. A boy is able to see that he has certain things in common with his dad and a girl with her mother. Somewhat subconsciously, they learn that there are two different sexes in life with differing strengths and abili6es. Importantly, in adolescence this learning focus more on behaviour, what is acceptable and responsible and what is not. Parents have a lot of influence in helping their children to become responsible people not only within their family but in society; through their influence on their children, parents do have an influence on society. Children cannot develop a moral compass unless the people closest to them use the clear, unambiguous language of right and wrong. We should help our children to develop their moral compass by promo6ng moral ac6vi6es through our self-discipline, our good work habits, our kind and considerate behaviour to others, and our community involvement. As parents, we want our children to be

Fr Greg Tomorrow evening Fr Greg will celebrate 50 years of his profession as a Carmelite priest.

responsible for their own character development; our responsibility is to provide the physical and moral environment. This licle dicy says it all: “Parents can tell, but never teach, unless they prac6se, what they preach.” Arnold Glasgow.

1973 to February 1974. Returned in 1979 for six months. Then from 1987-1993 and was involved in the building of the new Priory, Church and the Parish Centre. Returned again in 1996-1999. Fr Greg returned to the Parish of Infant Jesus most recently in September 2017. As a school we have been truly blessed with his involvement in our school and our faith journey. Fr Greg is a very visible presence with his regular visits to all the classes in the school and has a wonderful rapport with all the children and the staff. He greatly assists us in maintaining the very strong link between the parish and the school through the celebra6on of Family Masses, Parish Masses and the Family Focused, School Supported Sacramental program. His pastoral concerns for the needs of all in the community is always at the centre of his work.

If we pay careful acen6on to guiding our children’s adtudes by teaching them to have a healthy regard for themselves, then, our children will grow up to be confident, capable and independent individuals. All things considered, “The most important thing that we can teach our children is how to get along without us.” Frank Clark. Children like parents to provide order in their lives and family meals can be a comfor6ng, regular ritual for all family members, even the family dog. Someone, who obviously had a bad paren6ng experience said, “There are 6mes when paren6ng means nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you.” Author unknown. Family meal6mes should have a calm congenial atmosphere with no arguing or lecturing; they can be a great 6me for parents to introduce new foods to their children and to act as role models for healthy ea6ng; how important that is for long term health.

He is very suppor6ve of the School Leadership Team and is ac6vely involved with the School Board. Fr Greg always considers the needs of the school and the staff; he makes himself readily available to the school and any 6me we call on him to do something for us . . . He always says “Yes”. We are truly blessed to have Fr Greg as our Parish Priest. I cannot speak highly enough of him as a person and a priest. He has been amazing to work with over the past three years. He cares deeply about the school, the students, the staff and the families of Infant Jesus School, as well as the parish community to which we belong.

By some quirk of language evolu6on, the word “listen” has the same lecers as the word “silent”. If we are to teach our children to be good listeners, which will be of great advantage to their educa6on, we might find this piece of informa6on to be to our advantage.

So, we Congratulate Fr Greg on this most wonderful achievement – 50 Years as a Priest/Carmelite and send our best wishes for his 70th Birthday. We ask God to con6nue to bless the work of Fr Greg as he guides us all. We hope that Friday night is a very prayerful and memorable celebra6on for a most special man in our community.

Fr Greg Tomorrow evening Fr Greg will celebrate 50 years of his profession as a Carmelite priest. He answered God’s call and joined the Carmelites on 15 August 1970 in Sydney. Throughout his fiiy years he has faithfully served in many parishes throughout Australia, has been involved in university work and inspired all with his wisdom, his stories, his example and his ability to connect our faith with our life. It is also Fr Greg’s 70th Birthday on the 20th August, so we also recognise this achievement at the same 6me. Fr Greg has had a long associa6on with the Infant Jesus Parish. He was first here in from October

Infant Jesus Day This year we will celebrate Infant Jesus Day on Friday 28 August. On this day we recognise, honour and acknowledge our heritage and the tradi6ons of our school. It is a special 6me to be grateful and apprecia6ve of our past and all the people who, in many different ways have contributed to the faith filled and vibrant community that we have today. Our faith-filled and vibrant community is evident through all its members; the children, the staff and the parents. As a community we aspire to achieve our shared vision and work together to make a posi6ve difference each day. Our mantra of #ExpectGreatThings is embedded in all that we do and in 2020 we have endeavoured to con6nue to improve as life-long learners through a focus on Exceeding Expecta6ons. This year, the theme of Infant Jesus Day con6nues the focus of honouring and learning from the tradi6ons of the past by ensuring that these life-long tradi6ons are visible and lived through what we do and say each day. In a very visible way, the tradi6on of ‘school fac6ons’ at Infant Jesus School has strengthened community spirit and provided a sense of belonging for all. The four fac6ons at Infant Jesus School were first introduced in the early days of the school with the associated saints added much later. The fac6ons have provided a tangible link from when the school was first established in 1954 by the Dominican sisters to today. Throughout the history of the school all members of the community; children, staff and parents can all recall the ‘fac6on’ they were in during their 6me at Infant Jesus School. In recent 6mes the values of Faith, Hope, Love and Truth have also been aligned to one of the fac6ons. These values are on the fac6on polo shirts that were introduced for the 2020 school year and are worn every week on ‘Fac6on Friday.’ The fac6on of Aquina is connected to St Thomas Aquinas who joined the Dominican order of preachers. Throughout his life he showed great Faith in God and the work that God had called him to do. The fac6on of Calaroga is connected to St Dominic, who was born in Calaroga, and founded the Dominican order of preachers. This order was inspired to share the message of Truth. The fac6on of Lima is connected to St Rose who was born in Lima. She joined the Dominican order and shared God’s Love with others, especially those who were ill. The fac6on of Siena is connected to St Catherine of Sienna who joined the Dominican order and provided Hope for all through difficult 6mes. All these saints inspire us with their faith, their love, their hope and the trust that they had in God. As a community we endeavour to also con6nue to share this faith, love, hope and trust. Through the Parish we also have a link to the Carmelite tradi6ons. St Therese of Lisieux, St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross all joined the Order of Carmelites. They were remarkable people who devoted their lives to God and sharing his message of faith, hope, love and truth.

5

On Infant Jesus Day, we will give thanks for the example given to us by the fac6on saints. We will learn more about their lives and how we can follow their example. During the day, there will also be a focus on enjoying the ac6vi6es and gedng to know everyone in our fac6on ‘team.’ This year, due to social distancing requirements, Infant Jesus Day will only involve the children. • The day will commence with a Whole School Mass in the School Hall at 9.00am. Fr Greg will lead this

celebra6on for Pre-Primary to Year 6 children and the Staff. At this Mass children will honour our Infant Jesus School saints by sidng with their fac6on.

• Following the Mass, the children will return to class where ac6vi6es will focus on the story of Infant Jesus

School, our tradi6ons and history, the fac6on saints, and their work in sharing the Good News and how we might follow their example through our words and ac6ons.

• Aier recess children will visit a variety of stalls and ac6vi6es including

a cake stall, a lolly stall, funny faces, pop s6cks, quoits, guess the lollies in the jar, chocolate toss. The funds raised from these stalls will be sent to Catholic Mission which supports children in need throughout the world.

• At the conclusion of the stalls, the children will enjoy a sausage sizzle

lunch supplied by our generous P&F.

• During the aiernoon, children will be in teams within their fac6ons for

a tabloid sports aiernoon. Each team will have at least one student from each year level (from Pre-Primary to Year 6). The ac6vi6es will focus on teamwork, coopera6on and lots of enjoyment and fun.

On Infant Jesus Day • All children in Years 1 – 6 need to wear their ‘FacYon Friday’ uniform including their fac6on hat. • All children will need some spending money to par6cipate in the stalls between recess and lunch • The Canteen will not be open for the usual orders as all children will be provided with a free Sausage Sizzle lunch on Infant Jesus Day.

Feast of the Assumption This Saturday, 15 August, we will celebrate the feast day of the Assump6on of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a special Mass. This feast day celebrates Mary’s Assump6on into heaven and the Church has made this a Holy Day of Obliga6on. Mary loved God and always trusted in Him, doing all that God would want of her. Although she became the Mother of Jesus, Mary was a simple woman who lived according to the customs and tradi6ons of her Jewish faith. On the Feast of the Assump6on, we remember and celebrate that Mary was taken to heaven, body and soul, by God. This special privilege was given to her because of her sinless and exemplary life and total trust in God.

Year Six Camp

Safeguarding Project Child Protection Week 2020

Well, all our students arrived safely at the Woodman Point Camp School. As outlined previously, Infant Jesus School has not used the Woodman Point Camp School for some 6me, so I will be interested in the feedback from the students and staff. I am sure their days and nights are going to be filled with new learnings and challenges both individually and collec6vely.

The Safeguarding Office is the Perth Catholic Archdiocese abiding commitment to promo6ng the safety, welfare, and well-being of children and vulnerable adults. The Safeguarding Program is informed by a fundamental belief that children and vulnerable adults have the right to physical and psychological safety at all 6mes and that the Church, as a Chris6an ins6tu6on, should now and into the future be at the forefront of efforts to make this a reality. Crea6ng a safe church is a dynamic process that involves ac6ve par6cipa6on and responsibility by all leaders, clergy, church workers, and the wider church community including parents and families. The Archdiocese is commiced to making this possible through collabora6on, vigilance, and proac6ve approaches across legisla6on, policies, procedures, and prac6ces.

Camp is therefore a wonderful experience for all children as they learn new skills and develop a sense of autonomy and trust in their decisions. The aims of the camp are: • to develop within the students their leadership skills. • to build and develop new friendships. • to build personal competencies such as selfiden6ty, self-worth, self-esteem and self respect. • to par6cipate in ac6vi6es that perhaps students have never experienced before. • to develop new skills and develop a sense of autonomy and trust in their decisions.

The Safeguarding Program aims to raise awareness of our collec6ve responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults within the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth. The program is based on a fundamental belief that all children and vulnerable adults have the right to physical and psychological safety at all 6mes. We aim to prevent harm within parishes and agencies by building a culture that promotes safeguarding, pudng the needs and welfare of children and vulnerable adults first. We aim to ensure our church workers are informed and willing to commit to safeguarding our children and vulnerable adults. We aim to provide policy and prac6ce to create a safe environment and where there is an avenue of responding appropriately to any concerns, complaints, or allega6ons of harm.

Child Protection Week 2020 Every year the Archdiocese Safeguarding Program celebrates Na6onal Child Protec6on Week. The Na6onal Associa6on for the Preven6on of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) first launched Na6onal Child Protec6on Week thirty years ago to recognise the importance of pudng the needs of children first. This year the theme ‘PuZng children first…’ con6nues to resonate and the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth, through our Safeguarding Program, our Church leaders, our Safeguarding Officers and our parish communi6es demonstrate our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people.

1. Let your kids regularly stare into the ‘fire’. Ever sat around a campfire and stared at the flames? If so, you will know how calming it is. No exer6on! No need to think! No need to talk to anyone! Just a chance to chill-out and relax. The TV is the modern version of the campfire. Yep, TV used in this way is good for kids’ mental health.

From My Readings This Week… Helping Your Children Unwind “Busy, busy, busy!” That seems to be the catchphrase from everyone I talk to lately. When I ask, “How are you?”, that is the answer I oien get, even from children. It is not uncommon for some students to have four or five outside school ac6vi6es a week. We do live in a world where things seem to move at a frene6c pace, constantly moving from work to home, to sport, to social ac6vi6es with very licle breathing space in between. I have always been a believer in keeping my own children busy, especially with sports and outdoors ac6vi6es. My mum always said it would “…keep them out of trouble.”!

2. Let kids exercise without rules Kids are the kings and queens of play. Always have been. Un6l lately that is, when their lives have become highly organised and scheduled. Free, childini6ated play is the ul6mate in relaxa6on. Fun games, games with few rules and games that kids control help them to unwind. 3. Let kids experience flow Flow is a state we get into when we are so engrossed in an ac6vity that 6me disappears. It is the ul6mate unwind. We get flow when we pursue our passions so encourage teens to find ac6vi6es that they truly love and get lost in. Free play generally takes young children to flow very quickly so opportuni6es for unstructured play are essen6al.

Paren6ng expert Michael Grose says that there is “Nothing wrong with kids being busy as long as they have plenty of chances to relax and unwind.” He also points out that relaxa6on is the key to good mental health and well-being and is an important life skill for us all to learn. So how do we strike a happy and healthy balance?

4. Help kids calm down around bed6me Have a bed6me rou6ne that calms kids down rather than winds them up. You can become part of this rou6ne by reading books, telling nursery rhymes, providing soothing back rubs and other ways.

One way to ensure busy kids unwind, Michael Gross assures us, is to make sure kids get bored every so oien. There is a tempta6on to fill kids’ days with ac6vi6es so that no 6me is wasted. “I’m bored!” is the last thing most parents want to hear their kids say. Many parents feel compelled to do something to alleviate a child’s boredom.

5. Unwind with your kids Just think about your best memories from childhood. I am willing to bet that some of those would involve doing very licle, or ‘just hanging out’ with family. These 6mes are precious and a great way to rejuvenate and unwind with your children. We want our kids to be busy and involved rather than inac6ve and apathe6c. However, ac6vity needs to be balanced with unscheduled 6me so that perspec6ve as well as everyone’s sanity is maintained.

There is nothing wrong with a licle boredom now and then. Boredom can be good for kids’ mental health and well-being, giving them the chance to muck around and take it easy for a 6me.

Here are 5 ideas to help you unwind your kids:

Prayer for the Week The Assumption Dear Lord, We pray that we will have the same faith and trust as Mary. Help us to know what you want us to do Lord, and give us the courage to follow your will. Mary answered God’s call and became the mother of Jesus. We pray that we will listen to God’s call and, like Mary, say ‘Yes’ to Him. Jesus was always the centre of Mary’s life. May Jesus be as important in our own lives. Mary’s love and faith supported Jesus throughout His life. Bless our own mothers who love and support us in everything we do. May Mary’s life and her reward at the end of her life, guide us and encourage us to be people of faith. May we follow the example of Mary and all the saints in living lives of faith and trust. Help us to have the faith and commitment of Mary. Listen to our prayers loving God, so that, like Mary we might find hope and comfort in you. Amen

Thought for the Week

The world of tomorrow belongs to the person who has the vision today

so taken aback, they lei the city without harming anyone. Rose became the most celebrated person in Lima. This had licle effect on her and she con6nued her work regardless. However, long hours of work took their toll. At the age of thirty, she got ill and died. All of Lima grieved for a woman they believed had saved their city.

Traditions Catholic tradi6ons all have significance and meaning to our lives. This week we look at importance of ‘holy days’ and we also reflect on the life of St Rose, for which the fac6on of Lima is named.

Holy Days

Sacramental Program

In the Church year there are some special days called Holy Days of Obliga6on. Holy days are like Sundays in that Catholics must acend Mass, and if possible, refrain from unnecessary work. The number of holy days varies between countries. In some countries, holy days are public holidays so that people can acend Mass and be with family instead of going to work.

First Eucharist Retreat and Practice On Friday 21 August all Year Four children will par6cipate in the First Eucharist Retreat and Prac6ce at the Infant Jesus Parish Centre. The Retreat and Prac6ce Day will commence at 9.00am and conclude at 2.45pm. All Year Four children need to be dropped off at school and will walk to the Parish with their teachers.

In Australia, apart from Sundays, there are only two holy days of obliga6on - the Feast of the Assump6on and Christmas Day. The Feast of the Assump6on is always celebrated on 15 August. Families can join this celebra6on at the Infant Jesus Parish this weekend on 8.30am and 6.00pm.

Please remember that the Retreat Day is a free dress day. On this day all children need to bring their own recess, lunch and drink bocle. Please ensure that all food is nut free. Children are also encouraged to bring a jacket

St Rose of Lima

At the conclusion of the retreat, Year Four children will return to school with their teachers at 2:45 pm.

Next week we also remember St Rose of Lima as one of our fac6ons, Lima, is named in her honour. We reflect on her life and the example she gave us as we celebrate her Feast Day on 23 August, Isabel de Flores was born in Lima, Peru. Her skin was so soi and pink that they called her Rose and that became the name she was known by. Rose shunned the idea of marriage and joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic. She also worked to help her parents support their family of eight children. In addi6on to this, Rose also opened a free hospital for the poor who had no access to medical aid.

Let Us Celebrate Parish Feast Day - Saturday 29 August Each year we celebrate together the Feast of the Dedica6on of our Church on 29 August. Come and join us for Mass at 8.30am and followed by morning tea in the Parish Hall. Again, due to WA Covid-19 restric6ons, we ask that you register your acendance for the morning tea. You can do this by using the Eventbrite App or go to www.eventbrite.com.au and search “Parish Feast Day - Morning Tea” or by contac6ng the Parish Office or register on the list in the Church Foyer.

Lima is a coastal city and was oien acacked by pirates. In one incident the pirates got through a navy blockade which was trying to protect the city. The pirates stormed the cathedral where the women and children were sent for safety. When the pirates crashed through the door, Rose faced them fearlessly, standing directly before the altar. The pirates were

Sport News Physical Education: Athletics Term Three is all about Athle6cs and each year level have been working extremely hard trying to improve their athle6c skills. Our Year 1 and 2 children commenced the term focusing on their Vortex throw. Standing in a side-on posi6on and transferring our weight from our back leg to the front foot has been our main focus in throwing the Vortex. The children are now working on their team game events. The Year 3-6 children started their training with the Turbo Javelin event. This term the children have taken their iPad to Physical Educa6on and ďŹ lmed their Turbo throw. Filming enables the children to examine their technique and make any subsequent changes to enhance their performance. It has been amazing watching the children iden6fy the changes required to improve their technique. This week the upper primary classes are now focusing on Shot-Put. Our Athle6cs Carnival this year is scheduled to take place on Friday 16 October at Inglewood Licle Athle6c Centre. Please be mindful that in light of COVID-19 restric6ons that this event is subject to change.

P&F NEWS

The P&F held their meeting last Tuesday evening and we had some good discussions and are wai6ng to see with the current restric6ons and the school what event we can organise.

Old Uniforms We will be placing some containers at the school for collec6on of old but reasonable condi6on Infant Jesus School uniforms, since as of 2022 all students will be changed over to the new style. These uniforms will be donated overseas. So stay tuned and we’ll let you know where they’ll be.

Pickup/Parking There was some discussion on pick up and parking around the school, and we heard from the school that the survey that was conducted provided very posi6ve feedback and a big majority of parents are very happy with the pickup and drop off procedures. With thank the Infant Jesus staff for the extra du6es they have taken on making sure our children get to school safely. In saying this, we ask that parents be courteous to other drivers and our neighbour's by not blocking their driveways and most of all obey the road rules and be pa6ent.

Infant Jesus Day Infant Jesus Day will be approaching soon, this year IJ day will be different, so please read the newslecer as the focus will be on the children this year and parents will not be able to acend.
