FROM THE PRINCIPAL New Families Along with new families, we also have some new faces who have joined our sta for 2021

DEAR PARENTS Welcome to the start of the 2021 school year at Infant Jesus School. It was fantas c to see all the children so enthusias c and happy to be back at school on Monday. A er expec ng to be a ending school last week they have adjusted extremely well to a di erent start to the school year. The independence and resilience displayed by all has enabled them to se le quickly into the rou ne of the school day and the rou ne of being in a new classroom, with a new teacher and with a di erent group of friends. Much of the success of se ling so easily back into the expecta ons and rou ne of school is due to the dedica on, exper se, organisa on and planning by all the sta . Teachers also had to be pa ent as they waited an extra week before they could welcome children into their classes. However, all the an cipa on and planning was clearly evident in the enjoyment demonstrated by the children as they started a new year of learning at Infant Jesus School. A special thankyou to all the parents who also contributed to an enjoyable start to the school year. The children were very comfortable and responsible in organising themselves with all that is required for the day and came into the classrooms con dently by themselves. The work that parents do â€˜behind the scenesâ€™ in preparing children greatly assists to strengthen the partnership between home and school.

More locally, the extra holiday me saw many devasted by the recent bush res. We keep our local community in our prayers as they rebuild and the natural environment starts to recover. As a school community we are endeavouring to also assist in a prac cal way through our dona ons. This year I am privileged to have the opportunity to return as principal of Infant Jesus School where a Christ-centred and child focused approach guides all that we do. As we re ect on this focus we recall Jesus’ words to ‘love one another.’ In my role I am very fortunate to be con nuing the implementa on of the vision as we work together to a ain our aspira on of A LEADing Learning School. As A LEADing Learning School, there are Nine Key Drivers that • all focus on the LEARNER – students, sta and parents • are embedded in our thinking • and guide the work we do. In 2021, to support Learning and the Learners at Infant Jesus School the following ini a ves will focus on providing students with new, and poten ally, challenging opportuni es and you may have already heard your child talk about these. i-Succeed

a teacher will focus on the LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Learning Area by teaching Chinese in all year levels from Year One to Year Six.

a program, that includes mindfulness, for all year levels to further support the social well-being and pastoral care within our school community.

this program con nues and will now focus on further developing the skills required in a contemporary educa onal se ng by cri quing, analysing and evalua ng problems and physically crea ng a solu on by using technology tools including three-dimensional (3D) prin ng.

In all our work and life at Infant Jesus School we are always striving to improve in all that we do. For this to happen we need to con nue to #Expect Great Things of ourselves and others and work together to enable our community to ourish and to Exceed Expecta ons.

Although there was some extra holiday me this year we can all be very grateful for the safe environment that we have in Australia. There are many countries and communi es around the world who are less fortunate than us and have great challenges in staying safe and healthy and even a ending school due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a special way, I would like to welcome all those who are new to the family of Infant Jesus School. My prayer and hope for you is that your associa on with the school will be long and las ng, and one lled with many memorable memories. It has been very di erent for families new to our school community as you se le with gentleness and care into a new school environment.

Lent provides many opportuni es for people to choose to do renewing ac vi es, such as visi ng someone who is lonely, giving up something on television, remembering to say our prayers daily and/or as a family, a ending Mass as a family regularly or perhaps even making the Sta ons of the Cross throughout the period of Lent. We need to remember that if we are choosing to do something this Lent it needs to lead us to a posi ve change, which in turn has a posi ve e ect on the people who are daily in our lives. As we prepare for this season of Lent consider how you will renew your Chris an commitment and express Christ’s message of love, care and forgiveness?

Next Wednesday 17 February an Ash Wednesday Mass will be held in the School Hall for Year One to Year Six students. Unfortunately only students and sta will be a ending this Liturgy.

Lenten Thought

Claire has worked at Infant Jesus School for the last three years and we have all greatly bene ed from her exper se and skill and the programs and events that she has organised and implemented including the Class Music Program, Performing Arts, iPerform and the Christmas Concert.

Remember the concept of not only giving up during Lent, but taking up. What can we take up that will improve our lives and the lives of others this Lent?

2021 Term Calendar Update With the lockdown in Week 1 and some con nuing restric ons in Week 2 some events have been reorganised. We thank parents and families for their pa ence and exibility with the rescheduled dates and events.

Lent Lent commences next week and is a me where we have the opportunity to give expression as Catholics to our beliefs. For some of the happy me in Jesus’ life such as Easter and Christmas are o en the focus for celebra on. As “true believers” we should also pray with him on Holy Thursday, join him in prayer and fas ng during the forty days of Lent and stand by him on Good Friday.

When we celebrate Ash Wednesday, in the Catholic Church we commence the season of Lent. It is me of reconcilia on, re ec on and prayer, which prepares us for Easter Sunday. This period we call LENT means ‘spring’, and we celebrate it in memory of the forty days Jesus spent alone praying in the desert. Lent is a me for strengthening our faith, a me to re ect on who we are and where we are going. It is a me for quietness and prayer, a me of penance and medita on, a me to become

aware of our strengths and weaknesses. The season of Lent is one of those mes when the Church gives us the opportunity to address the important elements of our lives in a prac cal way.

New Families

The transi on to the new Infant Jesus School Uniform has been outlined to parents many mes since November 2019. This year, 2021, is the last year that the ‘old’ uniform can be worn as ALL students a ending Infant Jesus School will be required to wear the NEW School Uniform (Winter, Summer & Sports - all with the new logo) by 2022. We feel this gives parents enough me to transi on from the old uniform to the new uniform.

All parents are strongly encouraged to a end these sessions on Tuesday 16 February as this is an important link in establishing a strong partnership between the home and school, as well as sharing informa on and expecta ons to support your child’s progress during the year. These presenta ons are an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher, as well as ask any general ques ons you have at this stage of the year. We are looking forward to seeing parents at the Parent Informa on Evening and thank you, in advance, for your exibility, pa ence and considera on at this me as the health and safety of all in the community is of the highest priority.

Social Media & Parents of Infant Jesus School In signing the Enrolment Applica on for Infant Jesus School all parents/guardians have agreed to abide by the policies and direc ons of the school and the Catholic Educa on Commission of Western Australia. This includes living out the Catholic Ethos of the school and suppor ng a Christ-centred approach to all we do within our Infant Jesus School community.

The mee ngs will commence at 6.00pm in each year level from Pre-Primary to Year Six. For those parents who have two or more children in the school, a repeat of the class presenta on will occur at 6.45pm. If you have more than two children at Infant Jesus School, we invite you to make a me with your classroom teachers to meet and familiarise yourselves with the classroom program.

Within this signed agreement, Infant Jesus School expects Parents/ Guardians to make responsible choices when using Informa on and Communica on Technologies at school. The guidelines outlined for Sta and Students equally apply to Parents / Guardians and the extended community. Parents need to be aware that using emails to communicate with sta will not receive an instant reply. In fact, response mes may vary. Urgent ma ers must be directed by phone to the school o ce. Speci cally, and in addi on to the guidelines for Sta and Students, Parents / Guardians need to adhere to the following.

School Uniform It was great to see so many more students in the Summer Uniform introduced in 2020. The girls summer dress is unique to our school and the boy’s uniform with the navy shorts also makes them look very ‘smart’ and well presented. The Fac on Polo and Hat is worn on ‘Fac on Friday’ and we are looking forward to con nuing to develop fac on ‘spirit’ each week as we sit in our fac ons at recess and lunch.

As parents we need to: ✦ Understand that correspondence during school me can only occur through the school o ce. Parents may not email, FaceTime/sms etc children directly during school hours. ✦ Understand privacy laws pertaining to photography. At school or a school func on parents may take photographs of their children, but they may not take photographs of other children without the permission of the children’s parents. This permission needs to be in wri ng and presented to the school prior to the speci c func on in ques*on.

Parents are reminded that the Infant Jesus School uniform can only be purchased at One World Uniforms. Parents looking for alterna ve navy shorts from other shopping outlets or suppliers will clash with the correct school uniform. This was one of the reasons why we had to change our uniform as there were so many varia ons of the shorts the boys were wearing to school.

Parent-Teacher Information Night

eligible for Kindergarten in 2022 (born from July 2017 to June 2018) are required to ll out an Infant Jesus School Applica on Form. Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

parents to comment on, or post photos of people/ children of Infant Jesus School. Understand that privacy laws restrict parents in their reference to Infant Jesus School. All reference needs to uphold the Catholic Ethos of the School. Understand that any reference pertaining to Infant Jesus School may not be made on social network sites, email or other technology unless it is approved by the School and upholds the Ethos of the School. Understand that the digital footprint that is established the minute a person begins pos ng items, messages or photographs on social network sites will be there forever. Understand that the use of ‘Class Facebook Pages’ are only to be used to share informa on pertaining to the class and not used as a vehicle to discuss individual concerns or general conversa on. It is important that as parents we look at sharing the ‘Good News’ about our school.

SEQTA / SMS and Seesaw In 2021 the Veritas will con nue to be published fortnightly. The school will also use SEQTA/SMS to alert parents and families to refer to important messages posted by the Leadership Team on Seesaw via ‘Announcements.’ Class Teachers will con nue to use Seesaw to keep parents informed of class ac vi es. Thank you to all the parents who have downloaded the Seesaw app as this ensures that communica on can be maintained in a very e cient and e ec ve way including during a school lockdown.

Medical Conditions If your child has a medical condi on, e.g. anaphylaxis or asthma, etc the required paperwork should have been completed and given to the School O ce. Students in PreKindergarten, Kindergarten and Pre-Primary will have medica ons stored in the classroom; however, the School O ce will s ll need to be no ed of your child’s medical condi on.

From My Readings A new school year means a fresh start for students. Regardless of your child’s performance last year, they start school with a clean slate. A break o ers students the chance to begin new habits and adopt new behaviours. Here are seven ideas to help you make the most of the fresh start and make this year your child’s best year ever year at school: 1. Commit to your child going to school every day on me One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day – and gets there on me. Kids spend more me asleep than at school, so we need to maximise every day to get full value.

OSH Club Once again, the school has con nued its partnership with the OSH Club to provide before and a er school care for our school children. If your family is intending to use this service in 2021 – more informa on can be found on the Infant Jesus School website or from the front o ce.

Kindergarten 2022 – Applications are Now Due

2. Help kids start each day well A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and some words of encouragement from you will help set a posi ve tone for a day of learning. This may mean that you adjust your morning rou ne so that kids have plenty of me to get up, eat and get ready for the day. Consider taking a leaf out of the book of a friend of mine who gets her children to make their beds each morning which sets the tone for a produc ve day ahead.

3. Establish work & study habits The most successful students are those that develop regular study habits that suit their lifestyle, their study style and their school’s expecta ons. Find out the work expecta ons from your child’s or young person’s school and help them establish a work rou ne that matches their personality, lifestyle and family style. Be exible here as one size doesn’t t all when it comes to study rou nes. 4. Make sure your child gets enough sleep I encourage you to make a big focus as this year as many children and young people are sleep-deprived, which impacts on their well-being and their learning. A good night’s sleep consolidates learning, as well as assis ng future learning. Children need between 10-12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a minimum of nine hours. Help kids get su cient sleep by having a regular bed- me and get-up me each day. Have 45 minute wind-down me each night, and remove screens and mobile phones from bedrooms. 5. Get your kids outside more for good physical and mental health Kids today get less exercise than those of past genera ons, which is an impediment to learning and mental health. Health professionals recommend a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise per day for kids of all ages. Encourage kids to play sport; promote free and ac ve play and look for ways to make moving part of their daily lives. Consider increasing your child’s green me and decreasing screen me for good physical and mental health. 6. Focus on being friendly Schools are very social places requiring kids to nego ate many di erent social situa ons each day. Encourage kids to be open and tolerant; to be friendly; to be involved in plenty of ac vi es and to be social risk-takers. Some kids close down their friendship opportuni es through self-centredness, poor a tude and unwillingness to take social risks. 7. Develop self-help skills Successful students are o en well-organised, self-directed and self-mo vated. You can foster organisa onal skills and self-direc on by developing simple, age-appropriate selfhelp skills related to their every day lives. Also use visual paren ng techniques to aid organisa on and encourage independence. Such skills as making lunches, packing school bags, and organising a er school schedules can be great lessons that impact on how kids perform at school. At the start of the school year kids are likely to adopt changes than at any other me. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ CORNER

To further assist with pick-up procedures and for ease of iden ca on all families will be provided with a Family Name (e.g. Smith Family) which needs to be displayed on the dashboard or sun visor in each car. This was sent home with your eldest child on Wednesday a ernoon.

Attendance Staying away from school is not okay to stay for any reason, except legi mate illness and extreme family circumstances. As a school we are legally responsible to report via an electronic program, all absences every day, including con nual lateness to school. Please make sure you are compliant with this legisla on and please assist by contac ng the school by 9.00am on the day of absence. Please also send a note upon return even if you have been contacted by phone from the school. Your support is appreciated.

Drop Off and Pick Up Parents are reminded of the Drop O and Pick Up procedures for the school day. Following these procedures greatly assists with the safety of all the children. ❖ Parents may drive from Peter’s Place into the school ‘drive through’ and drop children o by the entrance to the Hall. ❖ Parents then need to drive out into Smith Street. ❖ Please note this is ‘One Way’ only. This is also ‘Sta Parking Only’ to ensure that there are no moving vehicles during pick up and drop o . ❖ At the school 'drive through' there is NO pedestrian tra c.

Visitors Sign in Schools have a ‘duty of care’ to students, sta , parents and visitors on the site. To ful l our ‘duty of care’ to everyone on the school site, all visitors to the school are required to sign in at the front o ce. This includes parent helpers.

Parking

Although this procedure may appear a burden it will ensure that the school can account for all individuals in the event of an emergency and it will help us increase our ability to protect any student, sta or parent on the site. The iPad is situated in the front o ce.

Parking and Drive Through Areas ❖

Parking, especially at the beginning of the year, is very much at a premium. Please be pa ent with the parking situa on. It will ease as the term progresses and more parents use the drive through to pick up and drop o children. We also ask parents to be considerate of others to ensure that tra c ows smoothly. We need to be courteous to our neighbours and follow the No Standing street signs at all mes to avoid being issued with nes. We ask that Year Six students use Russell Street drive through during the a ernoon pick up, to alleviate the very heavy school through on Peters Place.

Administration Carpark This Car Park cannot be used to drop children o in the morning or pick them up during the a ernoon. This again is very dangerous as cars are pulling in and out at all mes. Parents may use this Carpark only for o ce business during the day between 9.30am and 2.00pm.

Drive Through This is for parents who wish to drop o or pick up their child/ren without parking. Students will be supervised by a sta member to ensure they are collected safely by the child’s parent, or someone who has parental permission, at the end of the school day. Parents are reminded to be extra vigilant in their cars at this me as children depart the school grounds.

Church Carpark - This is the general Carpark for our parents. The Parent Carpark is designated as parking zone for Three Year Old Kindy, Kindergarten and PrePrimary parents. This is a ‘One Way’ area — parents drive in from Russell Street and out into Lovegrove Way. Permit passes have been given to these parents as they need to park their car and take their children to the classroom. As this area only holds 40 parking spaces, Kindy and Pre-Primary parents should s ll park at the Church Carpark, along Smith Street or at Peter’s Place.

Supervision It is very important that parents see that their children arrive at school no later than 8.30am so that they can unpack and get organised in order to start school promptly at 8.45am. Morning supervision is from 8.00am and children are not encouraged to arrive at school before this me. Class teachers (except Kindergarten) will have their classes open for the children from 8.30am.

EndÂ ofÂ the School Day Children are supervised between 3.00pm-3.20pm at the 'drive through' near the canteen, the Library entry/exit gate and at the Russell Street 'drive through'. Children who are s ll at school a er 3.20pm will be required to report to the school o ce and stay there un l they are collected. Parents need to park their car and come and collect their children. Any child remaining at school a er this me will be required to report to the school o ce and stay there un l they are collected. Please note that the o ce closes at 4.00pm. The day a er Shrove Tuesday is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday begins our forty-day season of Lent that leads to Easter. Lent is a special me for Catholics, as it is the me before Easter, when we are thinking about how we can improve our behaviour. We also think about how Jesus died for us. During Lent, Catholics o en ‘give up’ things. We do this to remind ourselves of the me that Jesus spent in the desert. We give up luxuries and try to resist tempta on, to prac se self-discipline. We also make me to pray more and to a end church o en. On Ash Wednesday, we come together like the people of the Old Testament to remind ourselves that we do not always follow God’s ways and that we need to ask for God’s mercy and forgiveness. We wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, and to have a change of heart, so that we can live in peace and in joy with God and with each other. This year Pope Francis declared that because of the global pandemic ashes were not to be made into a cross on people’s foreheads. Instead, Priests will say a prayer - blessing the ashes, they will then sprinkle the ashes with holy water and sprinkle them on the head of each person.

Pancakes

Shrove Tuesday

Ingredients 1/2 of a banana • 1 cup of self-raising flour • 1 cup of milk • 3 tbs of sugar • sea salt • butter •

Next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday. It is called Shrove Tuesday because Catholics would go to church on that day to be Shriven. Shriven is an old word that means that people had to confess all the things that they knew they had done wrong. The priest would bless the people, then they would go home and make pancakes using up all the rich and fa y foods that they would abstain from for Lent.

Method 1. To make the batter, mash the banana into a large mixing bowl. 2. Add the flour, milk and a tiny pinch of sea salt. 3. Whisk everything together until you have a lovely, smooth batter. 5. Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and after a minute or so, add ½ tablespoon of butter. 6. Carefully tilt the pan to spread the butter out evenly.

Perhaps your family would like to make banana pancakes for Shrove Tuesday.

7. Add a few ladles of batter to the pan, leaving enough space between each one so they have room to spread out slightly – each ladleful will make one pancake, and you’ll need to cook them in batches. 8. Cook the pancakes for 1 to 2 minutes, or until little bubbles appear on the surface and the bases are golden, then use an egg slice to carefully flip them over. 9. Year One Class News Year One have had an excellent start to the year! We have loved ge ng to know our new classrooms and playing on the oval. Our teachers are very excited for the year ahead. On Monday we got to meet our Year Six buddies who visited us in our new classrooms and played games and read stories to us. They have promised to help us as we get used to the big school. Year Six Class News The Year Sixes are so excited to have se led into their role as leaders of the school. In order to nurture our leadership skills, we went and visited our Year One buddies on Monday. We loved taking a trip down memory lane and playing with the manipula ves in the classroom. The Year Sixes have also shown their capability of taking on important roles such as preparing and cleaning the sports shed, and also helping out younger students at recess and lunch.

At Infant Jesus School, the safety and well-being of our students is a highest priority and is of utmost importance. We are commi ed to child safety and ensuring that we have a child safe culture at our school. To do this, we apply the ini a ve of the Catholic Educa on Western Australia (CEWA) Child Safe Framework which comprises of nine elements that together help our students and children to be and feel safe. These elements are based on the latest research and recognised best prac ces. The nine elements combine to support a child safe culture founded on healthy and respec ul rela onships. At Infant Jesus School, we are using the nine elements of the Framework to iden fy what we believe ‘best prac ce’ is and will con nue to look like at our school. Our aim is to ensure that we have and con nue to develop posi ve rela onships and a child safe environment in our school. The explicit development of this at our school was iden ed in the school’s annual improvement plan. The Child Safe Framework applies to all Catholic Schools and care centres in Western Australia, and also to the sta , parents, volunteers and school communi es. The Framework sets out best prac ce to develop the knowledge, mindsets, prac ce and behaviours that enable and sustain a child safe culture and wellbeing for all students in Catholic Educa on WA. The nine elements of the Child Safe Framework are: ⇒Support and Healing ⇒The Voice of the Child ⇒Culture ⇒Governance and Leadership ⇒Policies and Procedures ⇒Human Resource Prac ces ⇒Inves ga ng and Repor ng ⇒Risk Management ⇒Quality Assurance All sta at Infant Jesus School have been trained in Mandatory Repor ng and have Police Clearances and Working with Children accredita on. Mandatory Repor ng training is updated on a biennial cycle, and Working With Children clearance needs to be updated every three years.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY To celebrate ‘Safe Internet Day’ our Year Two students listened to the story, “Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5.” They learnt ve rules about how to be safe when using technology. ✤ ✤ ✤ ✤ ✤
