Dear Parents
A big welcome back to you all as you return for the final term of the year. I
have no doubt that the two-week break, while all too short, was nevertheless an opportunity to relax and clear the mind of the previous term and regain some energy needed to get us through what is typically a very busy 5me of the year. Nine weeks in length, the weeks will certainly zip by in usual speedy fashion. Already the calendar is fast filling with just so many various mee5ngs, deadlines, events and end-of-school-year celebra5ons. It is hard to believe that there is a li_le over 10 weeks un5l Christmas!! Term Four is always hec5c in schools. Teachers, staff and students no sooner ‘gear up’ for the term before having to ‘gear down’. Teaching programs, reports, end of year celebra5ons, gradua5on and Christmas all have to be crammed into the next nine weeks. I therefore encourage all students to con5nue to apply themselves and work hard with their studies this term as it is cri5cal to their transi5on to the next year level. In the midst of the day-to-day mission of keeping our heads above water, I pray that each of you has a wonderful few months, and find 5me to enjoy and savour the special moments, the friendship and support of one another and the chance from 5me to 5me to celebrate who we are and what we do. All good schools have a sense of unity. A sense of being “all in this together” should be especially present in Catholic schools centred as they are on Jesus Christ. Unity doesn't mean that all of us agree about everything all the 5me. Disagreements and different points of view are a part of life. The fact that those differences occur, does not mean that the deeper unity is dangerously weakened.

World Teachers’ Day is a day for parents and carers to celebrate and be proud of their school, principal and teachers.
We need to take some 5me to remind ourselves that we are not alone; that as people of faith it is important to acknowledge the spiritual side of our lives and spend some 5me in prayer to our God. Despite how difficult and troublesome we may find things there is always something we can be grateful for in our lives so let’s not forget that. Remind your children of this ohen.
itself, I must say that the Sacraments themselves have been celebrated in very meaningful and reverent way. There has been a real focus and a_en5on drawn to the celebra5on and receiving of the “Sacrament” itself. Both the First Holy Communion Masses and the Confirma5on Masses families have been reverent, prayerful and engaged in the celebra5on. This has made the sacrament ‘special’ as was the case last Thursday and over the weekend.
Our Lady of the Rosary
We recognise and thank the many people who have been involved in the candidates’ prepara5on.
The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This coincides with the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and was ins5tuted to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary in gra5tude for the protec5on that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful.

Confirmation Last week our Year 6 students were fortunate to receive the Sacrament of Confirma5on in what were three very special and memorable ceremonies. If there is a posi5ve to be found in the COVID-19 pandemic this year, I would have to say it has been the way in which ‘we’ as a school and parish community have celebrated the sacraments this year. Whilst there have been various restric5ons placed on the number of people a_ending, sea5ng arrangements, and the celebra5on of the Sacrament

Sacrament of Reconciliation We keep all our Year Three students in prayer over the next few weeks as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of the Reconcilia5on (officially called the Sacrament of Penance, and also known as Confession) for the first 5me. We teach our children that the Sacrament of Penance is a Sacrament ins5tuted by Jesus Christ in his love and mercy to offer us forgiveness for the 5mes we have sinned and turned away from God. At the same 5me, we are reconciled with the Church because it is also wounded by our sins. Every 5me we sin, we hurt ourselves, other people and God. In Reconcilia5on, we acknowledge our sins before God and the Church. We express our sorrow in a meaningful way, receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church, make repara5on for what we have done, and resolve to do be_er in the future. The Parent Informa5on Night for the Sacrament of Penance is Monday 2 November at 7pm. Our students will receive the Sacrament on either Monday 9 November or Thursday 12 November. Our students will be guided through the process by Fr Greg and the other assistant priests. All family members are encouraged to come along and support their child in receiving the Sacrament of Penance. It is also an opportunity for family members to receive the Sacrament if they wish.
New School Phone Number With our school upgrading to NBN our school has had to change its telephone number. As of next week, the NEW telephone number will be 9218 1700. The old number (9276 1769) will s5ll work for the next six months, but it may be a good idea for parents to update their contact details of the school while it is fresh and new in everyone’s mind.
Athletic Carnival We congratulate all compe5tors for their efforts last Friday in the Annual Athle5c Carnival. A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs Lauren Jenkins for organising all the events, running the various trials and coordina5ng the carnival. It is a HUGE job. Thank you to all of our staff for your amazing 'behind the scenes' work at the Carnival. The seqng up early in the morning, scoring, marshalling, packing/ unpacking and crowd control was very much appreciated and made for a smooth carnival. We are very lucky to have such an amazing and suppor5ve staff. We are also very grateful to the parents who assisted on the day, either marshalling, judging, distribu5ng ribbons etc. Without this assistance we could not run the carnival. I congratulate the winning fac5on in Aquina, as well as the medal winners in each age group. It was a great day with a really posi5ve atmosphere.
Quality Catholic School Award Last Friday morning, Miss Clare Moffat and I a_ended the Catholic Schools Quality Catholic Educa5on Awards where Infant Jesus School received an award out of (83 entries) for our Power of One ini5a5ve. The Power of One ini5a5ve was an opportunity for Staff to look for ways in which they could “GIVE” to the community without coun5ng the COST. Each staff member contributed one hour a week of Chris5an Service over a selected period of 5me. They worked in a voluntarily capacity, to integrate the principles of Catholic social teaching into prac5cal experiences of service to others in society. This informa5on will assist teachers in planning for the future educa5onal needs of the students with the school.

Summer Uniform A reminder to all students and parents about the Infant Jesus School Uniform. The uniform at Infant Jesus School is a symbol of the school’s community and it assists children to develop a sense of unity and belonging. Wearing the uniform encourages a sense of personal pride in and the school. Whenever the uniform is worn at school or public places it must be worn in accordance with the school policy.
2021 Enrolments As the school undertakes the process of prepara5on for the upcoming school year, it is important that we are aware of possible movements both in and out of the school community. The end of any school year is a busy 5me for many families insofar as transfers due to work or other personal circumstances. With posi5on vacancies at a premium and with wai5ng lists in all year levels, it is essen5al that we are made aware as soon as is prac5cable of either new enrolments or of families who may be transferring.
From My Readings This Week……
Children at Infant Jesus are expected to wear full school uniform at all 5mes. A Uniform Schedule is available on the school Web page or the school office. The uniform is a major investment by parents, and it is important that ALL clothing should be clearly marked with the child’s name. If parents have a difficulty with the school uniform, please make an appointment to see Mr Hille.
Persistence
Term Four looks set to be an ac5on-packed and exci5ng one, with plenty to keep us on our toes. Of course, the end of the school year is when students and teachers are working to achieve learning goals set at the beginning of the year, consolidate their understanding of new concepts learnt and look ahead to new challenges, whether it be star5ng high school or moving to another year level. Teachers will be preparing school reports for the end of term by observing student progress and assessing how each child has fared throughout the year.
ExpectaYons
Children are expected to be well groomed and have a sense of pride in their appearance. Children are expected to look clean, neat and 5dy at all 5mes.
Hair
For health reasons all shoulder length hair needs to be 5ed back securely. If hair is longer than the bo_om of the collar, it must be completely 5ed back with an elas5c band in school colours. The school colours of blue and white should be used when using ribbon. Also; ✴ Children’s haircuts need to be conserva5ve and appropriate to uniform expecta5ons. ✴ Hair must be a natural colour. Extremes in hair colour and styles are not acceptable.
This more than ever, is a 5me to ‘hang in there’ and PERSIST to achieve goals and finish what we set out to do at the beginning of the year. The ability to persist at a task and to see it through is one of the most important success skills that you can teach a child. Every day, each of us faces 5mes when we must persist, rather than take the easy op5on to just give in. When learning any new skill, we must be determined to carry on even when things get difficult or when it seems as if we are geqng nowhere.

Paren5ng expert, Michael Grose has some words of wisdom on the topic of persistence and explains that children need to be able to persist when school-work gets hard or life gets tough. He says that they need what he calls the ‘s5ckability’ to work through difficul5es and keep going when things don’t go their way. He points out that some children are more naturally predisposed to persist than others. They have a determined, even compe55ve streak in their temperament that doesn’t allow them to give in. These children and young people can drive themselves very hard to succeed.
2. Point out to children when they s5ck at a task. Let them see when they have been persistent and that persistence generally pays off. 3. Help children to remember Ymes when they experienced success by ‘hanging in’ when they were younger. 4. Talk about hard work with your children. They need to understand that to be successful they need to do things that are NOT fun or easy. While it would be good if all work and learning was fun, in reality, this is not always the case.
Prayer for the Week
The good news is that we as parents and teachers can help to develop persistence in children. Research suggests that persistence is a temperamental factor that can be improved over 5me. Just as adults can promote persistence, they can also impede its development by making life too easy for children so that they don’t have opportuni5es to persist or hang in there.
How blessed we are in this country of ours With our sunny days and our long daylight hours Our oceans deep and our desert plains Our temperate forests, our tropical rains. May we cherish and protect this beau5ful land This magnificent work of your crea5ve hand.
Parents who allow children to stop work when it gets too hard, stay home from school for a minor reason or give up on a sport because they are not succeeding straight away are not doing their children any favours. They are depriving children of opportuni5es to develop persistence. Parents can promote persistence by encouraging their children to keep going and not give in at the slightest hurdle or difficulty.

May we work together for this “lucky country” Towards harmony and stability for many a century. May we love our country and play our part In building its future with minds, hands and hearts. Parents can be a sounding board for children’s gripes, but they should show confidence in their ability to cope and get through their difficul5es. “You can do it” is far more powerful in terms of promo5ng an aqtude of persistence than “If it is a li_le too hard then try something else.” Let children know that there is a correla5on between effort and success. In fact, they need to learn that by GIVING EFFORT they will more than likely experience more success. The ability to persist in the face of difficul5es maybe an old-fashioned quality but it is one of the best success a_ributes that children will ever develop.

Pick-Up and Car Park Update Thank you to all the parents for your co-opera5on and pa5ence with the changes to the Pick-Up procedures implemented from the commencement of Term 4. All families have organised a pick-up procedure for the ahernoon and a large number have chosen the Drive Through adjacent to the Canteen to collect their children. Parents using this Drive Through need to be very pa5ent due to the significant number of children wai5ng at this Pick-up Area. Parents wishing to stay in their car and collect their children at a Drive Through can also use the Drive Through at Russell Street. The procedure is exactly the same as for the Canteen Drive Through as the children are supervised by teachers un5l they are collected. As there a significantly less children at the Russell Street Drive Through it is much quicker!! We are looking forward to more families considering the Russell Street op5on to collect their children in the ahernoon.
Summer Uniform Next week all students are required to be in the full Infant Jesus School summer uniform. Parents are reminded to have all items of school clothing clearly labelled as we constantly have items of school uniform in our lost property. A reminder that the collec5on bins for old winter uniforms are available outside the front office in the front gates.
Disco This year the Infant Jesus School P&F have organised for the school disco to be held in the School Hall tomorrow evening. We are very apprecia5ve of the P&F Execu5ve and the many parents who have volunteered to assist in organising this event which has required very careful planning to ensure social distancing expecta5ons are followed. As with all events we know that the children will follow the school behaviour expecta5ons to ensure that everyone has a fantas5c 5me.

Traditions Two of the tradi5ons in the Catholic Church take place in the month of October. We remember the feast days of two Carmelite saints and the Rosary prayer. Both Saint Therese of the Child Jesus (of Lisieux) whose feast day is 1 October and Saint Teresa of Avila, whose feast day is 15 October, were Carmelites and link strongly to the Infant Jesus Parish where the Carmelite priests, currently Fr Greg, Fr John and Fr Tadgh, guide, enrich and support the faith journey of all in our community.
All Souls Day Mass On 1 November as a Church we celebrate All Saints Day. The following day, 2 November, we celebrate All Souls Day.
Saint Therese and Saint Teresa were very faithful people who chose to serve God by sharing the Good News with others. They were ordinary people from ordinary families who persevered and never gave up in trying to do be_er.
As a school we will be celebra5ng All Souls Day on Monday 2 November. The Mass will be a special 5me to remember that Jesus is the resurrec5on and the life for all of us and that it is through Jesus we all have the hope of eternal life.
From Saint Therese of Lisieux we learn about being posi5ve in all things and that praying daily helps us to learn more about God’s love. Saint Therese spent much 5me outside, apprecia5ng God’s wonderful crea5on, and was known as ‘the Li_le Flower of Jesus.’ Saint Teresa of Avila taught us about not worrying what is on the outside and the importance of prayer. St Teresa founded many convents and taught others about sharing Jesus’ message. She also wrote many books to help people learn to pray and become friends with God. Through her work she is recongised as a ‘Doctor of the Church.’
Parish News New Altar Server Training
Training for new altar servers (junior) will begin soon. The altar server ministry is looking for dedicated children who have received their First Communion and would like to take part in the celebra5on of the Mass. Parents who wish to have their children trained, please call parish office on 9276 8500 to register your interest.

Sacrament of Reconciliation As part of their prepara5on to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia5on later this term the children in Year Three will be par5cipa5ng in a Retreat at the Parish Centre tomorrow (Friday 23 October). ✦ The Retreat commences at 9.00am and concludes at 2.45pm.

CLASS NEWS
Year One Class News Year One have had a very busy start to Term Four. We had so much fun at the Athle5cs Fac5on Carnival, experiencing the wonderful atmosphere on the day. In class, we are focusing on our families and how important they are to us. Respect is at the centre of our learning and we are exploring what it looks like, feels like and sounds like. In Technologies we discovered that data is all around us. We then collected data during our Mathema5cs lessons and created graphs to organise the informa5on in an easy to read format. Wri5ng has been a big focus throughout Year One and we are prac5sing all of the different genres we explored earlier this year. Each day we focus on a different genre which helps us to apply the correct structure…we are all budding authors in Year One! Our inves5ga5ons in HASS has brought us to explore the meaning of past, present and future. We are looking forward to examining toys from the past, the present and even crea5ng our own toys of the future. Keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming crea5ons!!

Year Six Class News Last week, the Year 6 Children received the Sacrament of Confirma5on. Fr Greg confirmed the candidates in a very respecxul and reverent mass. A special thanks to all those involved in the prepara5on of the students and on the day. I feel privileged that we were able to be confirmed. Confirmation was a great experience and I feel like the Lord is always with me. - Meghan Marino Dayan Confirmation is something I will never forget. It has strengthened my relationship with God and the Church. The experience was really exciting but I was so nervous. - Robert Nguyen I feel very happy that we were able to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, especially considering what has happened this year. Year Six Ministry News The Year 6 Sustainability Ministry would like to encourage people to par5cipate in the ‘Containers for Change’ program. To par5cipate, collect eligible containers instead of tossing them in the waste, then drop them off at a refund point where you can either keep or donate the 10-cent refund. Not only is it great for the environment, but it’s also a great way to make some pocket money or support local chari5es and community groups! How to ParYcipate: Collect Eligible Containers Most aluminium, glass, plas5c, steel and liquid paperboard drink containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible. Take them to a Refund Point There are different types of refund points across Western Australia, so find the right one for you. Sport News FacYon AthleYcs Carnival
Last Friday we held our Fac5on Athle5cs Carnival and what a fantas5c day it was! We were back at Dianella Reserve (Inglewood Li_le Athle5c Centre) and we were blessed with a beau5ful spring day. It was wonderful to see all of the children trying their best to earn points for their fac5on. All of the children from Pre-Primary to Year Six must be congratulated for their efforts, team work and cheering. In the end we had an extremely close finish and it was Aquina who won the 2020 Fac5on Athle5cs Carnival by a mere 5 points!!! Congratula5ons Aquina!
I would like to thank all of the parents and teachers who helped throughout the day. Without your support the day would not have run so smoothly. I would also like to thank the Wellness Ministry who did a fantas5c job helping in their bays and suppor5ng wherever they were needed. A big congratula5ons to all our Championship winners:
Interschool AthleYcs Carnival
Some of our athletes will compete in the CPSSA Interschool Athle5cs Carnival. This will be held on Friday, 30 October 2020 at the State Athle5c Stadium, Perry Lakes. Permission slips and programs will be distributed to those selected children ASAP. Please note the following regarding COVID-19: • Parents are welcome to a_end the carnival, but must adhere to the COVID-19 safety requirements. • Parents will need to abide by the 1.5m social distance rules and must stay in the allocated sea5ng area on the grass around the perimeter of the running track. Parents will not be permi_ed to sit in the stands with the school.

The teams have been finalised and the children will begin prac5cing their chosen sport in their designated sport 5mes. As we have 9 teams par5cipa5ng in the carnival we will be requiring parent help on the day. Any parents who are able to help coach/support please let me know via Seesaw or email. School Disco
Friday 23 October
WOOHOO! It’s finally here, the Infant Jesus School Disco, and I bet the kids are bus5ng to show off their disco moves. If you haven’t bought your 5cket yet, you can purchase at the door “Cash Only”. Names will be at the door no actual 5cket will be distributed. A few things to remember: Parents will be limited to entering the Hall, you are more than welcome to wait in the Piazza if you plan on staying. We have plenty of volunteers on hand to supervise the children. The snack bar is just that a snack bar, with party pies, sausage rolls, chocolates, lollies, icy poles, jelly cups, glow s5cks, juice, water and soh drinks for sale. The snack bar is CASH ONLY. We will have a pop-up snack table set up in the Piazza for purchasing of items to eliminate conges5on in the Hall and for parents to assist younger children purchasing items Children are to remain in the School Hall at all 5mes, unless with an adult or needing to use the toilet. Children are to a_end their session only. The rest of the school grounds are out of bounds. Our volunteers have given up their 5me, so please be courteous and respecxul to them.

School Banking We need your help with the School Banking Program in 2021! Our students really enjoy par5cipa5ng in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help. The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribu5on of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same 5me each week and will only take a small amount of your 5me. The Commonwealth Bank will provide support on how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly beneďŹ t students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. Currently, School Banking day is on a Tuesday morning. Changes to the day can be discussed based on the volunteer’s availability.
