FROM THE PRINCIPAL iHour The Year 4 -6 students gave Shark Tank a run for their money last week with very innova<ve ideas!
DEAR PARENTS It is hard to believe that three quarters of the year has already passed. This term, in par<cular, has just flown by. Many things have taken place at Infant Jesus School that has involved a number of people and to whom we are grateful. Most importantly, has been the prepara<on and par<cipa<on of the students in Year 4 in the Sacrament of First Eucharist. We congratulate these students once again on receiving this very special and sacred sacrament. It is appropriate to thank a number of people for their efforts and contribu<ons over the past ten weeks. The teachers, support staff and ancillary staff of this school are most professional in their support and educa<on of the students within their care and the progress of the school as a whole. The addi<onal educa<on Support Teachers and Educa<onal Assistants that we provide each year level is quite amazing and I know that the children definitely benefit from this addi<onal purposeful teaching programs. Much has been accomplished in a rather busy Term Three and it is most gra<fying to see the achievements of so many. The students have worked produc<vely in class, amid the disrup<ons to produce some quality work and pleasing results. The ‘Learning Journey Night’ was testament to this. Well done to you all.

Year 2 Assembly Our Year 2 students had a busy last of week of school! They finished off the term with a fantas<c assembly.
Leadership – What style should parents choose?
It has been said that running a country was a lot like running a cemetery: you have a lot of people under you and nobody listening! These remarks seem to suggest that being a leader is a liNle more difficult than it might appear to be. The leadership role of parents in their family situa<on is likewise more difficult than it appears to be. The degree of difficulty depends somewhat on the style of leadership we choose to use and our reasons for choosing that par<cular style. If we choose to use an autocra<c style where we totally dominate and use the benefit of adulthood to impose our will on our children, then, we will be in for a power struggle and we’ll have to use threats or punishments to achieve what we want. Unfortunately, our children will probably feel unsafe, unloved and untrus<ng of us. Very strict rules and suffoca<ng structures will cause our children to yearn for freedom, to be rid of us and our heavy-handed style of paren<ng. If we choose the opposite extreme and select to use a permissive style and elect to be physically or emo<onally absent, don’t set limits, be afraid to say “no” and NEVER hold our children accountable, then, we will reign over chaos. Our children will think they have the right to do anything they like and, because they don’t respect us, they will not respect other forms of authority. Unfortunately, our children will probably be perplexed by life, lack mo<va<on to achieve because they have never known structure in their lives, and they will find themselves easy prey for people who do not have their best interests at heart; they too will live in fear and feel unloved. If we choose to be in the middle of these two styles we will be choosing and authorita<ve – democra<c style. This style is based on respect, love and trust, very posi<ve communica<on and coopera<on are enjoyed on a daily basis. Our children will probably feel safe, loved and accepted yet free to be who they are. If we are proac<ve and foresee problems before they can fully emerge, if we can welcome opinions and offered choices while not guaranteeing that the children will always get what they want, then, our children will be confident, able to think for themselves and able to make decisions that have a posi<ve outcome. If our leadership has a confidence, fairness and respecfulness about it, it will inspire and help children to take up the leadership role in the own lives Our leadership style is of vital importance to the children because, for beNer or worse, paren<ng styles tend to repeat from one genera<on to the next. The good news is that everyone has the capacity to develop a good paren<ng style and to be aware and not to repeat paNerns that expose children to nega<ve and destruc<ve experiences. It also provides us with the knowledge that in giving into our children at every moment and not apprecia<ng that there are always two sides to every story, we are teaching our children poor life lessons and impac<ng nega<vely on their life experiences. Our children will feel loved and secure, if they witness the manner in which we go about living our lives and engaging with our children, other children, adults, teachers etc. in a posi<ve and friendly manner. Our children will sense that comfortable and upliging atmosphere and environment that allows them to be relaxed and op<mis<c about life - our children might even agree with the comment “Your ac<ons speak so loudly I can’t even hear what you saying.”

Learning Journeys
It was wonderful to see our families gather on Monday night as the children shared their learning with their parents. The Learning Journey session provides an opportunity for parents, children and the school to come together to support, share and celebrate each child’s learning. It was fantas<c to hear the students share their learning, knowledge, interests and abili<es with their parents. The children really feel proud of the work that they do, as I am sure Mums and Dads feel the same way. Well done to all involved.
Thank You
I would sincerely like to thank Miss Mitzi Phoebe for all her hard work and effort over the past 10 weeks, as she stepped into the role of Assistant Principal. Mitzi has been amazing in this role, accep<ng and dealing with all challenges presented extremely well. She has thrown herself into her work, making herself available to staff and the school administra<on, assis<ng where possible. As we have already recognised, this has been an extremely busy term on a number of different levels and Mitzi has certainly added value to the Leadership Team over the past 10 weeks. No doubt, it has been a wonderful learning experience for Mitzi as well.
Apple Dis<nguished School
Clare Moffat, Frank Colangelo and Melissa Myles will be travelling to Sydney over the first week of the holidays, aNending the Apple Dis<nguished School Conference. Infant Jesus School has been invited to aNend and at the same <me our staff will be conduc<ng a workshop on ‘School Leadership, Visioning and Implementa<on’ for delegates in aNendance. I am sure that Clare, Frank and Melissa will do an outstanding job! Best Wishes from all of us!

Faction Carnival We congratulate all competitors for their efforts last Thursday in the Annual Athletic Carnival. A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs Lauren Jenkins for organising all the events, running the various trials and coordinating the carnival. It is a HUGE Job. Thank you to all staff for your amazing 'behind the scenes' work at the Carnival. The setting up early the morning, scoring, marshalling, packing/unpacking and crowd control was very much appreciated and made for a smooth carnival. We are very lucky to have such an amazing and supportive staff. We are also very grateful to the parents who assisted on the day, either marshalling, judging, distributing ribbons etc. Without this assistance we could not run the carnival. Thank you once again to our FANTASTIC P&F Association for the morning teas and lunches provided. It was a great day and I congratulate the winning faction Lima, as well as all the medal winners in each age group.
School Uniform Next Term our students move into their summer uniform. As is always the case, the students will have a two-week transi<on from their winter to the summer uniform. From the beginning of next term, the updated school uniform will be displayed in the school hall. As parents would be aware, all children in Year 1 – Year 6 in 2020 will be given a new Fac<on Sport Polo and school hat. Students in Pre-Primary will be given a Pre-Primary Polo shirt and School Hat. Students have been ‘measured up’ for these new shirts and hats and these will be made available from the commencement of next year. The other items of the school uniform will be available at One World Uniforms from the beginning of November.
Capital Development Works Work on the extension to the School Administra<on block – Stage 8 (staffroom) has commenced. As acknowledged already, this construc<on will see some adjustments having to be made being made to parking alloca<ons around the school. This will mainly affect the staff car parking area but should not impact on the agernoon drive-through. However, as there will be some major capital works within the school grounds, I ask all parents to be most vigilant with the safety of our students at both drop off and pick up <mes.

The Performing Arts Fes<val for Catholic School and Colleges was held earlier this term. Across the school we had many par<cipants in this annual event.
We hope all families have a wonderful break and enjoy spending <me exploring, discovering, learning and visi<ng some familiar and perhaps new environments. Listed are a few ideas that you could use during the break.

NAPLAN Parents of children in Year Three and Year Five will receive an individual NAPLAN report with the results from the assessments completed earlier in the year. As a school, our mean results in all assessments (Reading, Wri<ng, Spelling, Punctua<on and Grammar and Numeracy) in both Year Three and Year Five are at or above the Na<onal Mean. This is extremely pleasing for our school. Well done to all!
Holiday Reading Throughout the last two terms all children and families have enthusias<cally joined in i-Read ‘The Principals Reading Challenge’. This has been developed to inspire all children to become highly mo<vated readers who love reading. Through i-Read each child set an individual goal and monitors their own progress. During the holidays: ‣ Provide <me to read on most, if not all days. Some days there may be <me to read than others. But if families gave a love of reading this <me can be part of every day. A <me might be set aside each day just to read which can including b being read to or silent reading. ‣ As parents model your love of reading. Children copy their parents - if they see parents excited about reading and enjoying reading every day they will develop a love of reading. ‣ Providing variety of books for children to read. Visit the local library to find more!!

China Day In November, our Sister School will move to their brand new campus and increase in size to cater for students in primary and middle school. The school will be renamed Hangzhou Guancheng Experimental School. In recogni<on of our partnership with Hangzhou Guancheng Experimental School and as a celebra<on of Chinese culture, staff have planned a ‘China Day’ to allow students to learn about and experience Chinese culture and history. Students will learn about the Great Wall of China, inves<gate Chinese wri<ng techniques and par<cipate in ac<vi<es such as Tai Chi and learning how to use chops<cks. China Day will occur 8 November 2019 and more informa<on on this day will be given in Term 4.

In the last reflec<on we explored the first half of The Eucharist Prayer. This prayer is led mostly by the priest and we pray silently and join in the responses. Ager we have acknowledged the great miracle that just occurred before us – that is the great mystery of faith of the bread and wine becoming the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, we remember the great events of the death, Resurrec<on and Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We then offer, through prayer, the gig of ourselves that we will become more like Jesus through receiving His Body and Blood. We then pray for those who have died and for ourselves in acknowledging how we have sinned.
In the last reflec-on we explored the first half of The Eucharis-c Prayer. This prayer is led mostly by the priest and we pray silently and join in the responses.
The priest then ligs the Host and the Chalice praying the words of praise linking the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, star<ng with ‘Through him, with him in him….and concluding with our response of all joining in ‘Amen.’ Amen means ‘I believe it. So be it, ‘It is true.’ Joining in ‘Amen’ is a fipng way to conclude the Eucharis<c Prayer in which the extraordinary miracle takes place.
Reconciliation Sacramental Program The children in Year Three con<nue their prepara<on to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia<on next term by aNending a Commitment Mass at 6.00pm on Saturday 19 October, or Sunday 20 October at 9.30am or 6.00pm. The Reconcilia<on Parent Mee<ng will be held on Monday 28 October. The children will receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia<on in Week 4 next term on either Monday 4 November or Thursday 7 November. The Parish will be providing more informa<on for parents as the children con<nue their prepara<on to receive this sacrament.

CLASS NEWS
Year Three Class News During Humani<es and Social Sciences, the Year Threes have been busy learning about Australia’s Neighbours, in par<cular Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. They have explored how people in these countries live, how the climate changes in rela<on to the environment and what flora and fauna live there. The students wrote entertaining blogs on Sway based on facts from each country. These lucky Year Threes even had a special visitor come to share tradi<onal dishes. At the beginning of the term, the students aNended an excursion to Brownes Dairy where they learnt about the Milk Process. In English, they were required to write an Explana<on based on the produc<on of milk and in STEAM, they designed and created dioramas that showed the steps involved (from farm to supermarket). Working in small groups, the students then completed oral retells of the processes using the app, Clips. Their favourite part about the excursion was gepng to milk Daisy the Cow. For the Year Threes Father’s Day present idea, the teachers organised a Bunnings Incursion. The students hammered away madly to make their Dad’s a wooden tool box. Feedback from the Dads was that the students definitely ‘nailed it’. At end the term, the Year Threes went to Woolworths at Morley Galleria to learn all about what’s good to eat and where fruit and vegetables come from in a fun and interes<ng way. The students par<cipated in a guided tour where they visited ‘behind the scenes’ (e.g. fridge, collec<on/drop off point) and sampled different types of fruits.

Year Four Class News Wow…Term 3 has been a whirlwind for us! We had a very busy term with lots of different events! We travelled to Herdsman Lake on an excursion where we saw a variety of birds, examined the invertebrates living in the lake and we even got to meet a long-neck turtle! Infant Jesus Day was such a rewarding day, where we had the opportunity to fundraise for the missions, we had a quoits stall which raised $472.50!! For those of us who love to sing and are a part of the school choir, we had Performing Arts which was an exci<ng experience and we felt very proud to represent our school. The highlight of this term was definitely receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist. On Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of September, we arrived at Infant Jesus Church where we made our First Holy Communion. It was such a special day for us where we got to gather our families to celebrate receiving our final sacrament of ini<a<on. We are looking forward to sharing all of our Term 3 learning with our parents during our upcoming Learning Journeys… our parents will be surprised to see all we’ve achieved, even with our jam-packed schedule this term!

iPerform On Wednesday 25th September, the Year Two students, who have all been par<cipa<ng in iPerform drama classes this term with Miss Condipodero, were given the chance to perform their plays, which they had memorised and rehearsed, for their peers and parents. Congratula<ons to all of the Year Two students for performing so wonderfully, you are all superstars! The students put so much hard work, enthusiasm and eort into their plays over the course of the term, it was an absolute joy to see. Thank you to all parents who organised costumes for their children and for suppor<ng the children by aNending the performances on Wednesday. 2019 Faction Athletics Carnival Last Thursday we held our Fac<on Athle<cs Carnival at Noranda Spor<ng Complex and what a day it was! The day commenced with a sprinkling of rain and just as the first team game started, the heavens opened! Ager 10 minutes of rain the clouds disappeared and thankfully the sun returned. We managed to finish the rest of the carnival in the sunshine and it turned out to be an amazing day! It was wonderful to see all of the children trying their best to earn points for their fac<on. All of the children from Pre-Primary to Year Six must be congratulated for their efforts, team work and cheering. In the end, it was the relay’s that decided the overall winner:

What's happening in our service This term we focussed on nature play and using more of natural resources for our art and craft projects. Children have also been putting their thoughts about Reuse Reduce and Recycle in a Journal which we discuss during mat sessions.
