FROM THE PRINCIPAL End of Term Congratula>ons to all the students for their efforts over the term.

Semester One Report Format Just a reminder to all parents…

Dear Parents End of Term As we approach the end of another school term we can reflect on some enriching, memorable and successful undertakings that have taken place at Infant Jesus School during the term. We have many very commiUed and enthusias>c people (including staff, parents and children) give their own >me and talents to create a posi>ve atmosphere at this school. Congratula>ons to all the students for their efforts over the term. It has certainly been a different term for all of us as a community, as we embraced the challenges that COVID-19 pandemic was presen>ng, individually and collec>vely, as well as the impact it has had on the teaching and learning program here at Infant Jesus School. As we have shared previously, the transi>on to remote learning by our staff and students was handled extremely well and we have received lots of posi>ve feedback from parents, staff and students. Given all these complexi>es the students can be proud of their achievements this term, for the effort the have applied and the results they have achieved.

School Cross Country Championship Congratula>ons to all our students…

All parents will be able to access their child’s report, via SEQTA, from 3.00pm on Friday aKernoon. As shared in the last newsleUer, the reports this semester will look a liUle different (see below) to previous Semester One Reports, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the remote learning children were required to do from home for a period of >me. Pleased be assured, that class and specialist teachers will make fair and reasonable professional judgements regarding student progress. Teachers (class and specialist) are required to grade students according to: ✦ the achievement standard for a par>cular year level, ✦ the work that they have produced and in accordance with this achievement standard and, ✦ the evidence they have collected (e.g. assessments, work samples both at school and from the Remote Learning package etc) I have read all the student’s reports and I have been very impressed with the level of effort the students are applying to their studies. This is most pleasing. However, there is always room for improvement, and this is the challenge presented to the children in Semester Two. Therefore, the conversa>ons that parents have with their child/ren are cri>cal. Take the >me to sit down and discuss your child’s report and look for areas for praise and encouragement. Teachers’ comments are important and should be used as ‘indicators’ in areas which a child may work towards improving. I encourage parents to arrange interviews with class teachers if there is some area of concern, so as to develop a collabora>ve approach towards assis>ng the child with their schooling. I would like to take this opportunity to THANK ALL the Infant Jesus School Staff for their efforts over the course of this semester. Each member of staff has been OUTSTANDING in their commitment to the school and students in these most difficult of >mes. They have approached their work with professionalism, enthusiasm and dedica>on, always taking into account the needs of the students. In many ways they have been the unsung heroes through all of this. They are certainly deserving of a well-earned break. I am very proud of all the staff at Infant Jesus School and the way in which they approach their work and #ExpectGreatThings of themselves and their students at all >mes. I would par>cularly like make men>on of our Assistant Principals, Miss Clare Moffat and Mr Frank Colangelo. Both Clare and Frank put in numerous hours before and ader school, as well as weekends, planning and organising events, planning schedules, dealing with students and parents. They wear more hats in a day than they take off students and they certainly go above and beyond what is wriUen in the duty statement! Their support and aUen>on to detail over the past semester has been excep>onal and I am very grateful for the efforts and assistance over what has been a very “different” semester to say the least.

Semester One Report Format Just a reminder to all parents that the Semester One 2020 report will include: ✤ Informa>on about student general learning progress to date in all learning areas ✤ Progress (achievement) reported as: o Above Expected Level o At Expected Level o Below Expected Level ✤ Each learning area will include ‘key descriptors’ that highlight some of the more important outcomes taught

over the semester.

✤ Effort grading for each Learning Area ✤ Personal and Social development ✤ General Comment

children are in the care of a teacher and a teacher assistant for the session, but parent help is encouraged.

School Cross Country Championship Congratula>ons to all our students on the successful par>cipa>on in the Infant Jesus School Cross Country carnival held last week. It was tremendous to see parents cheering on their child and the various fac>ons. The spirit of ‘sportsmanship’ was very evident with our students as they encouraged one-another to complete the course. Many thanks to Mrs Lauren Jenkins for coordina>ng the carnival. Thank you also to the band of helpers (parents and staff) who assisted throughout the week.

Who May A^end the Program? The 2021 program is offered to children who would have turned three by 30 June 2021 and plan to con>nue aUending Infant Jesus School in 2021 and beyond. Regula>ons prevent us from taking children un>l they have turned three years of age. Please note that enrolment at the Infant Jesus School Three-Year-Old program does not guarantee a place in the Four-Year-Old Kindergarten Program. Interviews will be conducted for both places. Interested parents are asked to contact Mrs Cheryl Macpherson at the school office to collect an Enrolment Form for 2021 Three-Year-Old program.

Congratula>ons to the individual place geUers and the Champion Boy and Girl in each year level. The results of all year levels are shared in the ‘Class News’ sec>on of the Veritas. We also congratulate AQUINA for winning the overall carnival. The results of the carnival were as follows:

1st AQUINA on 2400 points 2nd LIMA on 2181 points 3rd SIENA on 2168 points 4th CALAROGA on 2101 points

Sacramental Dates Please refer to the “We Are Called” sec>on of the newsleUer to see the dates for First Holy Communion and Reconcilia>on. Confirma>on is yet to be determined. Also please take the >me to read the latest direc>ves regarding the Catholic Church and its response to the COVID-19 pandemic from The Most Reverend Timothy Costelloe, Archbishop of Perth. This may be found on the school website.

School Fees Thank you to the many parents who have made an effort to pay their school fees early this term. This term’s accounts have been sent and all families are asked to pay these accounts as soon as possible. If any families are experiencing difficulty paying their fees, they are asked to contact the office (Mrs Irene Baginski) to make an appointment with Mr Hille.

Caring for Kids in an Online World With the holidays upon us, some of the informa>on below may provide mums and dads with some >mely informa>on to remind our children about the appropriate and safe ways in which we use the internet. The Internet offers a near limitless range of informa>on and resources for children of all ages and introduces them to a new world of socialising and entertainment. It also brings risks, such as exposure to inappropriate content, online predators and personal informa>on disclosure. Cyber safety is now more important than ever before.

Pre-Kindy (Three-Year-Old) Applications Three-Year-Old Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School is an educa>onal program for Pre-Kindergarten children. The program at the school is very much play-based and helps the children develop independence and crea>vity by offering interes>ng and fun ac>vi>es, that are developmentally appropriate, in a semi-structured form. The program follows a rou>ne similar to Kindergarten where the

Online safety fps for parents

✴ Use family-safe tools to filter the internet and protect users from offensive

material and online hazards.

✴ Set clear rules as a family for internet use at home. ✴ Teach your child to be responsible online. If your child is using a social

networking site become an ‘online friend’ so you can monitor interac>ons.

✴ Insist that your children do not share personal informa>on i.e., real name,

address, numbers or passwords.

✴ Encourage open communica>on with your children. ✴ Talk with them about computers and be open to ques>ons and curiosity. ✴ Discuss online lives, friends and ac>vi>es as you would do in the off-line

world.

✴ Keep internet-connected computers in an open area for easy supervision. ✴ Teach your children not to download programs, music or files without your

permission.

Some Holidays Ideas . . .Spending Quality Time with your Child ✴ talk with and to your child - promote and encourage conversa>on... try to find out as much as you can

about your child’s day. Finding out even small things gives you a common experience to discuss.

✴ find out what is happening at school ...e.g. the current topic/theme special event. ✴ make the best use of >me… play word games, have discussions in the car on the way to holiday ac>vi>es,

holiday des>na>ons, spor>ng events etc.

✴ to make the best use of the holiday >me - leave household chores un>l later if possible! ✴ have an organised / expected >me of the day / evening to share the experiences of the day, stories etc... ✴ Use the holidays to ‘catch-up’ on literacy ac>vi>es—e.g. visit or join

the local library.

✴ If your job involves literacy in any way, try to make this a part of

your child’s experience, e.g. visi>ng mum/dad’s workplace, watching mum/dad with the work that they bring home ✴ Involve children in everyday literacy ac>vi>es, e.g. reading a recipe, instruc>ons, labels on food items, menus, TV guides, the newspaper, making a shopping list, doing the shopping, wri>ng a leUer, sending a birthday card. Lastly, I hope all members of our community, par>cularly our students and staff, have a very enjoyable, relaxing and refreshing two-week break. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing everyone ader the holidays.

From My Readings . . . Resistance Words to Avoid when Talking to Kids (By Michael Grose)

Our choice of words when communica>ng with kids makes a huge difference when trying to get their coopera>on. The more we push a child who is resistant, the more likely they are to push back and display greater opposi>on. Some>mes one word can cause a child to fold their arms and thrust out their jaw in ‘youcan’t make-me’ defiance. Let’s take a look at some words that invite resistance, especially from strong-willed children who like to have their own way.

Resistance Words ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣ ‣

Must – for example “You must be on >me!” Never – for example “You should never be rude to your teacher.” Always – for example “You should always clean your teeth before bed.” You – for example “You need to go to bed now!” Don’t – for example “Don’t yell at your brother.”

6

If you can’t eradicate “Don’t” then develop the habit of ending on a posi>ve. For example: “Don’t yell at your brother. Speak quietly.”

Why They Invite Resistance ‘Must’, ‘Never’ and ‘Always’ are absolute terms. They cannot be modified in any way. Absolute terms invite resistance from children and young people who do not like to be told what to do. Strong-willed children and young people oden view these terms as open invita>ons to resist. If you have more than one child there is a good chance you have one of these children. If you were to say “You must be nice to your brother”, a young resister thinks “We’ll see about that”.

Words MaUer Your choice of words makes a huge difference in terms of geqng co-opera>on from more challenging kids. Of course, some parents believe that their kids should always do as they say, so their language is peppered with absolutes and nega>ves. This invites resistance and can lead to an ongoing baUle between parents and children. If this is the case, then maybe the language you use could benefit from a liUle tweak.

Healthy Alterna>ves To help with this, you can replace absolute terms with more moderate alterna>ves that don’t back a child into a corner. For example: ‣ Try “Please be on >me” rather than “You must be on >me.” ‣ Try “It’s best to be polite to your teacher” rather than “You should never be rude to your teacher.” ‣ Try “Clean your teeth before bed” rather “You should always clean your teeth before bed.”

Let Them Know What You Will Do Many children do not like to be told what they should do. They like to think they are calling the shots. These children are not misbehaving – they just want to feel that they are in control. Which means some>mes, their ins>nct to resist becomes greater than their desire to follow. Instead of telling your child what to do, let your child know what you will do. It’s a subtle but powerful shid. For example: ‣ Try “I’m saying good night now” rather than “Go to bed now.” ‣ Try “I’ll put the meal on the table when it’s set” rather than “Set the table!” ‣ Try “I’m driving you to school at 8.30” rather than “Get ready by 8.30.” You need to follow through if this is to be an effec>ve use of language.

Avoid Ending an Instruc>on on a Nega>ve Ending an instruc>on on a nega>ve only drives the nega>ve behaviour deeper into the sub-conscious mind of your child. Saying “Don’t yell at your brother” will ensure that your child will keep yelling again and again. Instead, say the behaviour you’d like in posi>ve terms. For example, say: “Speak quietly to your brother” rather than “Don’t yell at your brother.”

Prayer for the Week

We hope that everyone will have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break, spending fme with their families and friends. We thank you Lord, for this Term. For the challenges, the successes and the mistakes from which we have learnt. Be with us over the holidays as we spend our >me with family and friends. Give us strength and courage to do what is right to be witnesses of our faith. Help us to be prac>cal these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give >me and effort to help others, to be peacemakers in our family. Keep us safe in our ac>vi>es, give us good rest and good fun. Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new Term make us ready, aUen>ve and available to hear you. We thank you for the gid of being able to rise each day with the assurance that you walk through it with us. We thank you for the gids of crea>vity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use. May all that we are, all that we try to do, may all our encounters, reflec>ons, even the frustra>ons and failings all be placed in your hands. WE ARE CALLED 12

In the coming weeks we will see an increase in the number of people aUending Mass. In the Gospel this weekend Jesus provides us with some messages about reaching out to people in the words ‘Come to me all you who labour and are burdened.’ Jesus assures us that he will always be with us in our lives as we follow his ways.

Planning for the Sacrament of Confirma>on has been placed ‘on hold.’ We are hopeful that there will be some more informa>on ader the holidays. Children in Year Three will receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia>on (Penance) in Term 4. The prepara>on for this sacrament commences with the Enrolment Masses are on the weekend of 19 and 20 September. The Parent Mee>ng has been scheduled for Monday 21 September and the Commitment Masses have been organised for the weekend of Saturday 17 October and Sunday 18 October. During the prepara>on the children will par>cipate in a Retreat on Friday 23 October with children receiving the Sacrament on either Tuesday 3 November or Thursday 5 November.

In the weeks that follow there are a series of very familiar parables. A parable is a story that can help us to understand the readings so that we can become close to God. Jesus, the master story-teller, used parables to explain his Gospel teachings. He based them on the everyday events of the people of his >me. In the first parable a farmer is sowing the seed of his future harvest. Jesus taught the people that ‘the seed is the Word of God’ and the different kinds of soil invite us to reflect on which kind of soil we are for the Word of God. We think about how the Word of God is demonstrated through our ac>ons and words each day.

Parish News We have commenced Phase Four in our parish on Saturday 27 June, which means that we are no longer required to keep an aUendance register or to book a place to come to Mass. With current direc>ves of 2 square metres per person and 1.5m physical distancing, our Church can accommodate up to 366 people for each Mass. Everyone can come to Mass now without the need to book first. However, we are s>ll required to sani>se our hands as we enter the church and keep a safe 1.5m physical distancing from others (except family group). Our parish will con>nue to maintain regular cleaning and hygiene. Fr Greg has a recorded a video message for the Phase 4 COVID 19 roadmap. Please click on the following link for Fr. Greg's latest pastoral video.

In another Gospel Jesus gave three small parables to explain ‘The Kingdom of Heaven.’ The Kingdom of Heaven is described as ‘treasure hidden in a field’ a ‘pearl of great price’ and ‘a net cast into the sea.’ Jesus encourages us to reflect, to pray, to deepen our faith and share His love and example with others in making the Kingdom of Heaven visible here each day.

Sacramental Program

https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=rKOYZKT5Bhs&feature=youtu.be.

Fr Greg and the Parish Sacramental Team have revised the dates for the Sacramental Program for 2020. Parents of the children who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first >me this year have been no>fied of the new dates and >mes of the First Communion Masses which have been scheduled for Saturday 5 September, Saturday 12 September and Saturday 19 September. All First Communion Masses commence at 3.00pm.

Readers at Mass

The proclama>on of the Word is one of the ways in which Jesus is present in the celebra>on of the Eucharist. You are invited to join the Proclaimers ministry in our Parish as we are always looking for people who are passionate about the Word of God and able to read with confidence during the Mass. The commitment can be as liUle or as oden as you wish and involves being on a roster with another proclaimer, to share the readings. Training will be provided. Please consider becoming part of this ministry which is so central to our liturgy. Please contact the Parish office on 92768500 if you would like to know more.

Prepara>on for First Communion will also include the Parent and Child Workshop which will be held at the school this year. Parents will be no>fied of the date early next term. The children will also par>cipate in a Retreat and Prac>ce on Friday 21 August at the Parish Centre and Church. Please contact sacramental@infantjesusparish.org.au for further informa>on.

Student Ministry News Our Year Six Students have completed their first rota>ons in Student Ministry. Below are some of their reflec>ons:

What is being a leader like? Being a leader is like being yourself but in a much more mature and responsible way. When you are a leader, you guide younger or older people into doing the right thing every day. Kaila Newman Being a leader can be challenging but also a lot of fun. Many people look up to you and you’ve got to be doing the right thing all the >me. This is because the younger years will look up to you, so we need to set good examples. Sayla Buckley Being a leader can be quite scary because we have a lot of responsibili>es which can be overwhelming. I like being a leader because I get to help the younger kids! Kai Blanchard
