FROM THE PRINCIPAL China Day Celebrations Tomorrow is China Day, a day where our children celebrate and learn about the cultures and tradi4ons of China.

Dear Parents All Saints and All Souls The beginning of this week saw us as a Catholic Chris4an community commemorate two important feast days namely, The Feast of All Saints, which celebrates the recogni4on given to ordinary people who developed their personal quali4es to an exemplary degree, and The Feast of All Souls, which celebrates the life of people, especially those people who have gone before us in our own family and who are now part of the resurrec4on that Christ showed and promised.

The concept of “holy souls” is somewhat easier to grasp than that of “sainthood,” for we have all experienced the departure of family or friends. We pray for them a^er they have gone and hope that they are with God and enjoying the perfec4on of whom they strove to be whilst they were alive.

However, “saints” are far more difficult to comprehend as we have never had first-hand experience of a “saint” and tend to rely on the tradi4onal names.

Probably, we have never thought too much about some of the ordinary people in our lives as being saints in the making, or that we are called to sainthood from the 4me of our Bap4sm.

Some4mes, when I read the story about Jesus and the liTle children coming to him, I think what a wonderful expression of love and concern. However, a^er a few minutes Jesus could hand them back to their parents who were the real carers and who had the real experiences - not always posi4ve - of trying to provide total care. The following insight into paren4ng has a nice balance of reality and ideal:

Oh, but help me remember that no less real in their curiosity, their openheartedness, their zest.

Nowhere, but in children, do we see such recep4ve, eager and humble learners.

Parents are the ones with the responsibility to provide a “home” where children can develop and learn to discern what is helpful and what is harmful; where they can ask ques4ons without fear of rejec4on; where they can discover their own iden4ty and develop the esteem and confidence to eventually leave home and travel on. So, in effect, children are “guests” to whom we respond and never “possessions” to use for our own ends.

We teach our children that the Sacrament of Penance is a Sacrament ins4tuted by Jesus Christ in his love and mercy to offer us forgiveness for the 4mes we have sinned and turned away from God. At the same 4me, we are reconciled with the Church because it is also wounded by our sins. Every 4me we sin, we hurt ourselves, other people and God.

The canteen will also be serving a variety of different foods on this day instead of the usual recess menu.

On Friday the canteen will have chicken dumplings, fortune cookies, spring rolls, veggie crackers and bubble tea for sale. Our Friday lunch menu will remain as usual.

Sacrament of Penance On Monday night our Year 3 parents aTended the Reconcilia4on workshop with Fr Greg. This was a very well aTended and informa4ve night as Fr Greg outlined to the parents some of the deeper understandings of the Sacrament of Penance and its origins.

In Reconcilia4on, we acknowledge our sins before God and the Church. We express our sorrow in a meaningful way, receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church, make repara4on for what we have done, and resolve to do beTer in the future.

Addi4onally, we have this wonderful role to encourage children to “sainthood” by allowing them to develop their quali4es to the highest degree. As well, I suppose we are revealing ourselves to them by what we do do and say to them; I wonder what type of “holy souls” we’ll be remembered as being!

Our students will receive the Sacrament on either Monday 9th November or Thursday 12th November.

Our students will be guided through the process by Fr Greg and the other assistant priests. All family members are encouraged to come along and support their child in receiving the Sacrament of Penance. It is also an opportunity for family members to receive the sacrament if the wish.

China Day Celebrations Tomorrow is China Day, a day where our children celebrate and learn about the cultures and tradi4ons of China. In 2017 our school signed a sister school partnership with Hangzhou Guancheng Experimental Primary School in China. Our school has remained in contact with HG Experimental with the children sending leTers, videos and artwork to each other.

On Friday, the children will par4cipate in a range of ac4vi4es that celebrate Chinese culture. Students will play Ping Pong (the most popular sport in China), create Chinese fans, par4cipate in a tea ceremony and learn about the importance of Koi fish in Chinese culture. Our teachers have also been working closely with HG Experimental School teachers to read a collabora4ve story- where HG Experimental teachers will read a story in Mandarin, and Infant Jesus School teachers will read the same story in English.

As connected learners this day assists our children in recognising the diversity within and between our

NAIDOC Week NAIDOC Week celebra4ons are usually held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, due to COVID-19 restric4ons, NAIDOC Week was moved to November.

NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for our community to celebrate the contribu4ons that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have made to our great country, as well as acknowledge the wrong doings that have been done to them. In 2020, the theme for NAIDOC Week is 'Always Was, Will Be' and celebrates that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scien4sts, first diplomats, first astronomers and first ar4sts.

Remembrance Day On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 an armis4ce was signed that stopped the figh4ng in World War I. Since then, and a^er World War II, this day of remembrance became known as ‘Remembrance Day’ so we can remember the people who have died in all wars.

On Wednesday 11 November at 11.00am, the school community will par4cipate in a Remembrance Day prayer service which will be held in the piazza area.

New School Phone Number With our school upgrading to NBN our school has had to change its telephone number. As of last week, the NEW telephone number will be 9218 1700. The old number (9276 1769) will s4ll work for the next six months, but it may be a good idea for parents to update their contact details of the school while it is fresh and new in everyone’s mind.

School Fees The year is drawing to a close quite rapidly, and there are s4ll a number of families who have outstanding School Fee Accounts. We ask that all families please finalise their School Fees as soon as possible.

Opportuni4es are con4nuously provided to all families who are experiencing difficul4es to discuss the situa4on with the school Principal. Some families have acted on this, and we thank them for their sincerity and honesty. If you are experiencing legi4mate difficul4es in rela4on to your school fees, please contact Mrs Irene Baginski at the school office to make an appointment to see me.

Annual Community Meeting ~ Tuesday 24 November A reminder to all parents about the Infant Jesus School Advisory Council and P&F AssociaYon Annual Community MeeYng which will be held on Tuesday 24th November in the school hall commencing at 6pm.

Informa4on regarding this mee4ng has been sent home this week, as well as the relevant Nomina4on Forms.

We have three posi4ons on the School Board with each Board member re-nomina4ng, which will see out their terms in 2021.

The P&F Execu4ve posi4ons of President and Secretary are available with Marisa (P&F President) and Maria Bellisini (P&F Secretary) standing down a^er three years in these roles.

Please show your support and come along to the Annual Community Mee4ng.

2021 Enrolments As the school undertakes the process of prepara4on for the upcoming school year, it is important that we are aware of possible movements, both in and out of the school community.

The end of any school year is a busy 4me for many families insofar as transfers due to work or other personal circumstances. Currently, our enrolment numbers are full with ‘No vacancies’ across the school. However, we have a number of families on our wai4ng list, so if you do know that you won’t be returning in 2021, please write to Mr Hille so as to allow other families the opportunity to gain a posi4on at Infant Jesus School. This allows the school to plan for next year’s classes and new enrolments.

From My Readings This Week……

How Do You Know If You Are A Good Parent? (by Michael Grose)

At the end of a recent parent evening I was approached by two mothers asking the same ques4on – ‘How do I know I’m doing a good job as a parent?’

Top ques4on, and one I’d never really addressed directly before.

You don’t get a lot of feedback as a mum or a dad to know if you are on track.

Without becoming too technical here’s a rough guide to help you assess if you are doing a good job as a parent. Ask yourself these ques4ons (I’m using the principles outline in Thriving! as reference points.): 1. Are your kids, by and large, happy and content (even your grumpy child)? The no4on of happiness & contentment is an indicator of a child’s well-being. It indicates that there is some stability and predictability at home, which kids need to thrive.

2. Is family-life rela4vely predictable & stable? Most kids like rou4ne and order as it enables them to focus on what they are meant to be doing – which is growing, learning and developing. When there is order and rou4ne kids can focus their energies on these things, rather than try to work out what may be happening next.

3. Is the environment you provide psychologically and physically safe? Some kids grow up in toxic environments where cri4cism and bullying is rife, and kids can do as they wish, which puts their safety at risk. Encouragement, praise, posi4ve feedback, catching kids doing the right thing or being brave all make up a psychologically safe environment.

4. Are kids learning and developing? This is an indicator that things are going well for kids. I know some kids experience difficulty, but effec4ve paren4ng involved clearing the path to learning for all children.

5. Do you feel like you are in charge, or do children rule the roost? Someone needs to be leader of the family, and it’s best if it’s an adult. Okay, all kids push the boundaries. It’s their job. But parents, by and large, need to direct the daily ac4on and make wise decisions for kids. Kids should make some decisions, but only according to their age and stage of development.

6. Do you give kids opportuni4es to socialise with other kids and adults? As a parent you have some say in direc4ng the socialisa4on process for kids. They need to learn to get along with others and move from ‘me’ to ‘we’. You help this process by providing opportuni4es to socialise, teaching manners and reminding them (all the 4me) about ‘geqng on’ with others.

7. Are you developing the skills of independent living? The job of every parent is to work toward redundancy so effec4ve parents do more with kids, and less for them.

8. Is their love and affec4on in the air (balanced by firmness)? Kids need to feel loved and that they are loveable. You let kids know they are loved through your ac4ons and words. Being told ‘I love you’ by an adult you respect and admire is an incredibly reassuring, empowering thing.

9. Is family-life fun… at least some of the 4me? Humour and fun are the building blocks for mental health (& rela4onships too). They relieve tension and stress. That’s why dads who tell jokes (even if they’re really bad!) are welcome in families.

Someone has got be lightening the atmosphere at home.

10.Do other people think you’re doing a good job? How would most people assess your paren4ng? There will always be some people who think you are doing a poor job of it (some4mes they are related to you), but what would the majority of people say? Would they give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down?

11.Are you happy in your role? This is tricky. We all get down on ourselves and our kids from 4me to 4me. But hopefully you are geqng some joy from your paren4ng. If so, this will show through to your kids in lots of ways. If not, then perhaps you need to work out what is stopping you, then make planes to change the situa4on. That could be working on your paren4ng skills (lack of skill prevents many parents from enjoying their paren4ng), or even geqng some professional assistance if you feel that you are stuck in a paren4ng or personal rut.

Hopefully, you read this list and nodded your head far more than you shook it. It’s not meant to be an objec4ve, comprehensive list. It’s more of a subjec4ve, common sense checklist to help you work out that in fact, YOU ARE DOING A GOOD JOB AS A PARENT !

We all try our best, and some4mes we mess up. But, by and large, kids forgive you your transgressions. But there is one thing that they all want. That is, they expect and rely on your fair dinkum, honest commitment to always trying to act in their best interests. In some ways, that’s the best test of effec4ve paren4ng.

NAIDOC Week 8-15 November 2020

NAIDOC Week celebra4ons are held across Australia each July (this year due to COVID-19 this week has been rescheduled to 8-15 November) to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communi4es, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to par4cipate in a range of ac4vi4es and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘Na4onal Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance CommiTee’. This commiTee was once responsible for organising na4onal ac4vi4es during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. Find out more about the origins and history of NAIDOC Week. hTps://www.naidoc.org.au/about/naidoc-week In recogni4on and celebra4on of NAIDOC Week 2020, our students will par4cipate in a collabora4ve artwork with Noongar ar4st, Rebecca Casey. Ms Casey will tell the students stories as they paint. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will par4cipate in this ac4vity and it will be available for all the see upon comple4on. In addi4on to this incursion, teachers will be organising ac4vi4es in their classrooms to acknowledge and celebrate the Indigenous history of our country.

BYOD Requirements Year Three 2021 In Term Three, an informa4on night was held for the current parents of Year Two students regarding the 2021 Bring Your Own iPad Device program. Infant Jesus School requires students in Year Three – Six to bring an iPad to school.

The iPad required for our Year Three students in 2021 is an 8th Genera4on WIFI 128GB. This iPad was released in September of 2020 by Apple and is the latest iPad which should last students through to Year Six.

Purchasing Requirements

Parents are free to source an iPad and case from whichever provider they choose; however, the school has been able to set up an educa4on portal through JB HiFi and a result, can offer parents discounted prices on items. Please note, these prices will be through an online portal – not direct from a store. Op4onal discounted accessories will also be available through the portal. This includes the insurances which are available to purchase at parent discre4on.

Interschool Athletics Carnival Tomorrow a team of student will represent Infant Jesus School at the CPSSA Interschool Athle4cs Carnival at the State Athle4cs Stadium, Underwood Avenue, Floreat, Entry via Challenge Stadium. Our Year Three to Six children will be depar4ng school at 7:50am and returning at 2:40pm.

It has been fantas4c seeing so many people on the oval leading up to the carnival. Many children have already been out there training hard and it has been wonderful to see their will to improve.

Due to the early start I ask that the children come to school on the day at 7:40 am dressed in their sport uniform ready for the bus. More details can be found on the permission note.

Students will need to bring, food, snacks, water and a hat in their Infant Jesus School bag and are required to be in their full sport uniform.

Parents are welcome to aTend. Please see Mrs Jenkins if you are able to assist on the day.

School Uniform It has been fantas4c to see so many students already in their summer uniform.

A reminder that next week all students need to be wearing the summer uniform.

Pick-Up Update Thank you to all the parents for your co-opera4on and pa4ence with the changes to the Pick-Up procedures implemented from the commencement of Term 4.

All families have organised a pick-up procedure for the a^ernoons and a large number have chosen the Drive Through adjacent to the Canteen to collect their children. Parents using this Drive Through need to be very pa4ent due to the significant number of children wai4ng at this Pick-up Area.

Parents wishing to stay in their car and collect their children at a Drive Through can also use the Drive Through on Russell Street. The procedure is exactly the same as for the Canteen Drive Through as the children are supervised by teachers un4l they are collected. As there a significantly less children at the Russell Street Drive Through it is much quicker!! We are looking forward to more families considering the Russell Street op4on to collect their children in the a^ernoon.

in the same way we need to be willing to forgive others who do wrong against us. ✴ God’s forgiveness which focused on recognising that we have done something wrong and are in need of the forgiveness of God. God grans us this forgiveness so we can come to be closer to him.

Traditions The month of November is a tradi4onal 4me to honour the gi^s of others and their holy lives .

Earlier in the week we reflected on All Souls Day during the Mass and All Saints Day, celebrated the day before. Learning about the saints, their gi^s and how they shared the Jesus’ message in serving others.

The children shared some of their thought about the Reconcilia4on Retreat Aaron-“I enjoyed all the fun games that the 24/7 School Ministry leaders played with us.”

Arianna- “The sin experiment performed by the 24/7 School Ministry was exci4ng to watch.”

Throughout their 4me at school students learn about the Dominican saints associated with our school and the Carmelite saints linked to our Infant Jesus Parish. As part of their prepara4on to be confirmed the Year Six students chose a saint that had and would con4nue to inspire them throughout their lives.

Next week on Monday 9 November and Thursday 12 November the children will receive the Sacrament of Penance (Reconcilia4on). We keep the children and their families in our prayers during this special 4me.

Some of the saints chosen by the students in Year Six were: ‣ St Albert because he is really knowledgeable and that’s how I aspire to be. (Jai) ‣ Saint Columba because she always led by example. (Akira) ‣ St Elizabeth because she inspires me to be a beTer person. Her main mission was to help those in need. (Erin) ‣ St Catherine because she is a good role model as was always kind to others. (Joanna) ‣ St Rose because she inspires me to be a beTer person. St Rose always did the right thing.

(Maddison) ‣ St Francis because he always did the ‘right thing’.

There are many examples from the life of St Francis where he chose to do the ‘right thing’ which makes him a great role model. (Jayden)

St Vincent De Paul Donations The Pastoral Care Ministry have been very busy co-ordina4ng the dona4on of food at the end of Term Three and the beginning of Term Four to assist those in need. We thank all families in the school for suppor4ng this by generously dona4ng pre-packaged food items. Last week the local St Vincent de Paul collected all the dona4ons.

During the next few weeks the Pastoral Care Ministry will focus on encouraging everyone to donate to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. They have organised for each year level to focus on different items. We extend our sincere thanks to all families for your generous dona4ons to assist those in need.

Sacrament of Reconciliation On Friday 23 October the Year Three students par4cipated in a Retreat at the Parish Centre as part of their prepara4on to receive the Sacrament of Penance (Reconcilia4on).

The Retreat was facilitated by the 24:7 Youth Ministry Team and provided many engaging and reflec4ve ac4vi4es that focused on developing a deeper meaning of the Sacrament of Reconcilia4on.

Throughout the day the children were very enthusias4c par4cipants and learnt more about ✴ rules and rites which focused on coming to understand the need for God’s rules on our own lives and the need for reconcilia4on when we don’t follow the rules as we should ✴ forgiving other as God forgives us where the children developed a greater understanding that we have done wrong and need forgiveness and

Year Two Class News In Year Two we have been learning about how the Noongar people have remained connected to their land. We know that the Whadjuk Noongar people were the first people to live in Perth and they have looked a^er the land for thousands of years.

Natasha from SERCUL (South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare) came and spoke to us about the Noongar Seasons. She also brought some plants to show us. Natasha explained how the Whadjuk Noongar people used, and some s4ll con4nue to use, these plants as food, to catch fish, as rope and as a source of heat.

We have con4nued to research the six noongar seasons, Birak, Bunuru, Djernan, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang. These seasons are not calendar date bound, but change depending upon the environment. For example, we learnt that the Noongar people know it is Kambarang as the Australian Christmas Tree begins to flower. The seasons also tell you when it is the right 4me to hunt a specific animal, or to pick a par4cular plant.

Year Five Class News Our school holidays now seem a distant memory, as we are now immersed in our end of year learning and assessments in Year Five. We began Term Four with an ac4on-packed day at our sports carnival, followed in Week Two with Book Week celebra4ons, where we to dressed up as a favourite book character.

A significant learning focus for us in STEAM is Digital Systems and the different parts of a computer. We learnt that the housing, motherboard, central processing unit, hard drive, random access memory and opera4ng system are some of the main components that make a computer work. We compared the computer to the parts that make up the human body. This has been a fascina4ng educa4onal journey for us, as we navigate the systems which drive our technological learning.

Year Six Ministry News ChrisYan Service Ministry Half-way through Term 3, the Chris4an Service Ministry students and teachers began handing out SPIRIT AWARD TICKETS as points towards each FACTION. These points were awarded to students for demonstra4ng the Values and Expecta4ons of our school, in class and in the playground.

The Chris4an Service Ministry announced the winner of the SPIRIT AWARD for TERM 3 going to LIMA with a total of 335 points. A representa4ve from LIMA from Year 1 and Year 6, came forward to accept the award on behalf of their fac4on at our last assembly.

The year level who accumulated the most points were the students in Year 2. Mr Hille presented all the Year Two children with their Principal’s S4cker Award on Monday. The children were very excited.

Well done everyone and thank you for your eort to maintain our school Values and Expecta4ons. We look forward to seeing who will win the Spirit Award for Term 4.

As the year is almost coming to an end, all the posi4ons on the P&F will become vacant, and you will have the opportunity to nominate for any of them. Nomina4on forms were made available this week.

SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAM IN 2021!

The School Banking Program will be finishing at our school at the end of this year as we look for a new Banking Co-ordinator to help us facilitate the program. Our students really enjoy par4cipa4ng in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribu4on of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your 4me, one day a week, and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support on how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday. This day can be changed to suit the new co-ordinator. There are currently a couple of volunteer helpers but they are unable to commit to the co-ordinator posi4on. If you are interested in volunteering for this great posi4on and program, please contact Maria Bellesini on 0410 151 110.
