From the Principal Dear Parents This year we will celebrate Infant Jesus Day on Friday 27 August 2021. It is a day that all children excitedly look forward to every year.

On this day we recognise, honour and acknowledge our heritage and the tradi>ons of our school. It is a special >me to be grateful and apprecia>ve of our past and all the people who, in many different ways have contributed to the faith filled and vibrant community that we have today. It is also a >me to celebrate the present and to look with great hope to the future.

The theme of Infant Jesus Day this year, ‘Faith in the Future’, con>nues the focus of honouring and learning from the past by ensuring that our charisms and tradi>ons are visible and lived through what we do and say each day. Our focus is always on the children with Christ at the centre. We recognise and are inspired by many people including families, staff and children who have walked with us in in the ‘yesterdays’. Today we con>nue to inspire and mo>vate each other to use our giGs to strengthen our community spirit to ensure all are welcome and belong.

Our vision of ‘A LEADing Learning School’ provides the inspira>on for where we want to be as a Catholic school today and in the future. As we look with faith and hope to the future our vision drives the work that we are doing. Families and the community are invited to join us at Infant Jesus Church for a Whole School Mass where Fr Greg will be our main celebrant.

12.45pm (approx.) Following the Mass at Infant Jesus Church, the children and parents will walk to school for a Sausage Sizzle lunch.

Pre-Primary to Year Six children will return to class where class teachers will distribute a Sausage Sizzle to each child.

Parents need to collect a Sausage Sizzle from the tables in the Piazza.

Families can share lunch on the School Oval (weather permi]ng).

First Eucharist Holy Communion is an incredible giG and the amazing thing about the giG is that it can be unwrapped >me and >me again in our lives, and every >me we do this, the giG will be brand new.

Each new unwrapping gives us the opportunity to gain a beRer understanding of what the giG actually is.

In 2003, Pope John Paul II published a leRer on the Eucharist and gave a clear insight into the nature of the giG: “We talk of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, because Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist is a presence in the fullest sense, where Jesus is wholly and en>rely present. The Consecra>on at Mass changes the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the Body of Christ and the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his Blood.”

The people who lived and associated with Jesus, had the comfort and support of his actual presence. Jesus foresaw the need for his presence to remain with them so they could carry on with his mission and so, the events of the Last Supper. For us, who have so many distrac>ons in life First Communion Day can be a >me of renewal for all family members, perhaps a >me to unwrap the giG again and discover an understanding that is truly relevant to where we are in life. The Eucharist is the Sacrament of God’s love and love is something that all of us can use plenty of.

“Jesus, we ask you to bless the children who are to receive you in Communion for the first >me.

We ask you to bless each one of us, so that we might have a renewed understanding of your giG of love.

Amen.”

The Sacramental Program is Family Focused, Parish Based and School Supported. We thank our Parish Priest, Fr Greg and our Assistant Principals Miss Melissa Myles and Mr Frank Colangelo and our teachers, Miss Hermans and Miss Rotondo who have spent many weeks organising the Eucharist programme which has included mee>ngs, a Commitment Mass, a parent and child workshop, a retreat, reconcilia>on and daily lessons at school. We also acknowledge and thank the Parish Sacramental Team, lead by Mrs Theresa Choo and supported by Mrs Sue Goodwin for their efforts and support in preparing the students for this wonderful Sacrament and celebra>on.

Code of Conduct A reminder that every member of the Infant Jesus School community must behave in the manner described in our Code of Conduct.

Our Code is like the 40km/h speed limit outside our school in the mornings and aGernoons. It defines behaviours that keep our students safe: at school, and elsewhere. Children and young people surrounded by adult and peer behaviours described in the Code are more likely to recognise and choose healthy rela>onships for themselves.

We each keep our students safe by following our Code of Conduct, and encouraging and reminding each other to do so.

For Staff, our Code of Conduct is a lawful direc>on and forms part of their employment agreement and for parents, compliance is a condi>on of your entry to school premises.

There are twelve Conduct Statements in the Code of Conduct that everyone must adhere to.

Specific informa>on and examples for Statements one to eight has been included in previous newsleRers in 2021. Further informa>on will con>nue to be included throughout the year with informa>on rela>ng to Statement Nine included in this newsleRer.

CECWA Policy Implementabon Transibon The new CECWA Policy and Execu>ve Direc>ves structure was promulgated throughout the Catholic Educa>on System on 22 February 2021. All Catholic school principals must now lead the transi>on process, make sure

any school-based policies are replaced by CECWA Policies and Execu>ve Direc>ves, with school-based procedures only being produced to provide addi>onal guidance within their Catholic school community.

We have successfully navigated the first half of the policy suite updates. You will now be able to see on our school’s homepage a link to the policy suite. We will now begin the process of uploading any procedural opera>ons specific to Infant Jesus School. This process does take some >me and I thank you all for always suppor>ng CEWA and Infant Jesus School procedures.

State Budget Submission Informabon As you are aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed a range of addi>onal demands on our system. ARached to this newsleRer is a leRer from the Execubve Director, Dr Debra Sayce, outlining some of the addi>onal demands placed on our schools and the system as whole. The Execu>ve Director has outlined her concerns in recent mee>ngs with the Minister for Educa>on and Training, the Hon Sue Ellery. Please take the >me to read this informa>on as it outlines some of the key funding measures that Catholic Educa>on Western Australia is seeking equity in for our schools.

Informabon Technology We are always looking for ways that we can provide resources to further enhance the engagement of all students in the learning. This term we have been very fortunate to install six large screens in each of the Year One to Year Six ‘wet areas’ (shared areas between the two classrooms). We are very grateful to the P&F for their support of all school ini>a>ves - the staff are very thankful as they can use this resource in their teaching, in comparison to a laptop or iPad screen and the children are very excited as many children can see the large screen clearly (in comparison to trying to view everything on the ‘small screen.’)

Performing Arts The Infant Jesus School Choir have been working very hard preparing for their performance at the Catholic Performing Arts Fes>val on Thursday 26 August 2021. We were provided with a ‘preview’ at the last assembly, and this can also be viewed at hXps://youtu.be/rI06g7OebYg. On Thursday 26 August the Choir will represent Infant Jesus School in the Sacred Choral and Choral Performance sec>ons of the Fes>val. We wish Mrs Carroll and the School Choir all the best for the performance.

Book Week Each year Australia celebrates Book Week, a >me for schools and libraries to spend one glorious week celebra>ng books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. This years Book Week theme is Old Worlds, New Worlds and Mrs Houwen has done a fantas>c job at conver>ng our school library and organising a range of compe>>ons and ac>vi>es for the children to par>cipate in.

On Wednesday 25 August, children from Kindy to Year 6 are invited to dress as a favourite book character to celebrate a love of reading. Thank you to Mrs Houwen for all the hard work she has put into organising this event.

P&F Survey Thank you to all those parents who have taken the >me to complete the P&F survey. Countless studies have found that students perform beRer in school when their parents are involved. Assis>ng the P&F not only benefits our school in organising important social and fundraising events, but also provides parents with an opportunity to socialise and meet other parents and community members.

Pre-Kindergarten applicabons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Pre-Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022. Families with children eligible for Pre-Kindergarten in 2022 are required to fill out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica>on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con>nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of aRendance being Tuesday and Thursday.

Pre-Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica>ons as soon as possible.

From My Readings Teach kids to problem solve When parents solve all children's problems we not only increase their dependency on adults, but we teach them to be afraid to make of making sites as fer>le ground for anxiousness and perfec>on which oGen go hand in hand.

Kids get used to bringing their problems to parents solve.

Of course, if you keep solving them, they'll keep bringing them. “Mum, my sister is annoying me?” “Dad, can you ask my teacher to pick me for the team?” “Hey, I can't find my socks!”

It's temp>ng if you are in a >me-poor family to simply jump in and help kids out.

You can take a problem-solving approach, cuing them to resolve their own problems and take responsibility for their concerns. “What can you do to make a stop annoying you?” “What's the best approach to take with your teacher?” “Socks, where might they be?”

Here are five ques>ons you can ask kids to encourage them to resolve their own problems: 1. “Can you solve this yourself?”

Get kids thinking they can do it 2. “What do you think needs to happen?”

Start kids thinking about solving problems.

3. “What's the first step?”

Some>mes just ge]ng kids started is enough to get them working out issues for themselves.

4. “How would you like me to help?”

Get kids considering the type of assistance they need.

5. “What's the best way to do this?”

Get kids assessing and priori>sing.

Problem solving is one of the four major skills (op>mism social skills and independence being the others) that resilient kids share, yet it's the one that many of us aren't equipped to develop. Start by stepping back and asking good ques>ons when kids bring you their problem to solve.

Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop – 8 August Last Sunday, 8 August, we celebrated the life of Mary MacKillop. Mary MacKillop was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI on 17 October 2011 and became Australia’s first saint.

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. AGer what was considered a challenging childhood, Mary was forced to leave home at the age of fourteen to work and provide money for her family. By the >me she was fiGeen, Mary had decided she was going to become a religious sister.

She wanted to devote her life to God and to assist the poor. Through her words and ac>ons, Mary reflected and shared with others the presence of God and her calling to serve.

Mary MacKillop truly lived and passed on the Gospel values. Her love, faith, trust, commitment and enthusiasm live on in our lives today. Mary is a wonderful inspira>on and model for all.

Assistant Principals' Corner School Uniform- Shoes A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, ins4ls recogni4on of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in represen4ng their school.

Our school uniform not only provides a sense of belonging and pride of associa4on in students at Infant Jesus School, but also promotes the safety and security of students by allowing for the ready iden4fica4on of students as belonging to our school. Equality is fostered through this Uniform Policy, common to all students.

The Infant Jesus School uniform policy requires children to aEend school in black lace up school shoes. Recently children have been wearing black sport shoes in place of school shoes. Please ensure that your child is wearing appropriate uniform at all 4mes.

BYOD Night As you may be aware, our personalised 1-1 iPad Program will be moving into its tenth year at Infant Jesus School. The children’s learning has been enhanced with the use of this technology. It has enabled the learning to occur in a variety of meaningful ways and it has empowered them to integrate tradi4onal learning with the use of technology to further improve their understandings.

Icy Pole Fundraisers Our Year Six students will be selling icy poles at lunch4me to raise money to support the breakfast club of a local school. The money will be used to purchase ingredients and Infant Jesus staff members will make meals a^er school which will then be donated to the school. This is part of our Power of One ini4a4ve, where the Power of One group can make a big difference in the life of others in our community.

Juice Box Fundraiser Thank you to all families who supported the recent juice box fundraiser. Our Year Six students generously gave up their recess and lunch play 4me to man the stall and raised $200. This money was used to purchase gi^ cards which were then donated to the parish to give to those in need.

Absent Students Thank you to the parents who have followed the school absentee procedure. This is a requirement established by the Department of Educa4on and all absentees must send in signed notes.

To ensure the safety of children parents, are asked to no4fy the school by 9.00am if a child will be absent on a par4cular day. The Department of Educa4on has confirmed that whilst a phone message is not a subs4tute for a signed note when repor4ng absences, an email mee4ng the following criteria is accepted.

Please make sure that these details are included in your email as this is a legal document; • the name of the student • the class/roll group of the student • the reason for the absence • the full name of the parent/guardian at the end of the message (the ‘from’ email address is not sufficient as it does not necessarily have the full name of the person sending it).

Parents need to also be aware that an absent message sent via Seesaw does not follow the school procedures as class teachers may not be accessing Seesaw at the beginning of the day.

Parents must provide the teacher with a wriEen explana4on as to the cause of a child’s absence or a doctor’s cer4ficate. A note is also to be given to the class teacher if the child is absent for an extended period e.g. holidays.

Derby Dress Up Day Students are invited to wear their favourite Eagles/Dockers clothing or accessories to celebrate the Western Derby.

Children not participating may wear their Faction Friday uniform.

Each year, across Australia, The CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) brings children and books together celebrating Children’s Book Week, the 2021 theme is “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. Books are judged in four categories which are Early Childhood, Younger Readers, Older Readers and Picture Books, some of these books are on display in our Library.

To help celebrate Book Week all children are invited to dress up as their favourite character from a Book for the Assembly. A “Dress Up Pass” needs to be filled in and placed in the correct box in the Library. These passes will be put into a raffle draw and the winners will be announced during the Assembly.

We Are Called The Assump*on of Mary On Sunday, 15 August we celebrate the Feast Day of the Assump?on of Our Lady when according to our faith, Mary, “having completed her course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”

The Assump?on signals the end of Mary’s earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. While

the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between the Assump?on and the Resurrec?on. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary’s body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son. Because the Solemnity signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obliga?on, which means all bap?sed Catholics are obliged to aRend Mass.

Travel Vlogs in Year Five!

In HASS the Year Fives have been learning about North and South America. Students have been researching many interes<ng facts about countries in North and South America and experimen<ng with Green-screens to make travel vlogs and Sway to share and present their knowledge.

In Wri<ng, students have been learning about fantasy texts types and geFng a deeper understanding of the elements and structure involved to help us write our own fantasy story. We will conclude our inves<ga<on of the unit by draGing and publishing our very own fantasy text.

Class News Year 2 Chocolate & Coco’s Adventures We have had an exci1ng start to Term Three. Our class pets Chocolate and Coco have decided to take a trip around the world. So far they have explored the countries of France, Brazil and Africa. They have sent us books outlining their journey and their adventures. A highlight for us is Coco's Recipes and we have made Palmiers from France, Brigadeiros from Brazil and Irio from Africa. It has been delicious tas1ng different cuisines. We have used MinecraM Educa1on to create significant landmarks from the places Chocolate and Coco have visited some of which have included the Eiffel Tower, Christ the Redeemer and the Safari. We can’t wait to see where they go next.

Class News Science Na#onal Science Week In 2021 Na.onal Science Week 2021 commences on Saturday 14 August 2021 and concludes on Saturday 22 August 2021. Na.onal Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contribu.ons of Australian scien.sts to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in.

To highlight and celebrate Na.onal Science Week, Cecily Arkell, Educa.on Officer, from Australian Earth Sciences Educa.on has been working with our Year 2 to Year 6 students this week.

Australian Earth Science Educa.on (AusEarthEd) aims to create, produce and deliver innova.ve, valuable earth sciences experiences; to further the recogni.on of earth sciences as an integral part of STEM; to improve the quality of the talent pipeline for industry; to increase awareness of the wide range of career opportuni.es that earth sciences provide; and to emphasise the importance of earth sciences in understanding contemporary issues.

Working along side Mr Capolingua the incursions this week are based on the Australian Curriculum (Western Australian version) for Earth and Space Sciences.

Child Safe Framework at Infant Jesus The person of each individual human being, in his or her material and spiritual needs, is at the heart of Christ’s teaching: that is why the promo?on of the human person is the goal of the Catholic school.

The Child Safe Framework and the Code of Conduct are clearly linked as both focus on the safety and well-being of our children.

At Infant Jesus School the purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

The Code applies to staff, students, volunteers, parents and guardians and all who come to our school. The term ‘parents’ includes guardians. Infant Jesus School has a Code of Conduct in place, and as parents, you sign this and agree to this. All staff are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Informa?on Technology

Online Gaming A study on Youth and Online Gaming in Australia found that 81% of children aged 8 to 17 have played an online game and 64% have played a mul?player online game with others. With online gaming becoming more common, there are ways parents can help their child to stay safe when gaming, as well as develop healthy gaming habits.

Build good habits • • •

Help your child to protect their privacy online — get them to use a screen name that does not reveal their real name.

Teach your child not to click on links provided by strangers, like ‘cheat’ programs to help with game play, which might expose their device to viruses or malware.

Agree on strategies to help them to switch off, like a ?mer that signals game ?me is nearly over, with consequences for not switching off.

Stay involved •

Talk regularly with your child about their gaming interests and who they play with online.

Help them understand the risks.

Play alongside your child to get a bePer sense of how they are handling their personal informa?on and who they are communica?ng with.

Monitor the ?me your child spends online and keep a look out for any changes in their ac?vity, school or social behaviours.

Encourage your child to tell you if they experience anything that worries them or makes them uncomfortable.

Games vary in their level of violent or sexual content, and may contain themes, language and images that are unsuitable for your child.

You can check the age guidelines and classifica?on for an individual game on its website or product packaging, or from the • Australian Classifica?on Board’s public database.

The Australian Classifica?on Board also has useful informa?on on violent video games to help parents and their children decide what video games are appropriate for them.

Review sites can also be a good source of informa?on about age appropriate content – check out the Australian Council on Children and the Media.

P&F News

Infant Jesus Day This year Infant Jesus Day will be held on Friday 27 August. The children really look forward to this day with the games and stalls and the free sausage sizzle lunch.

The P&F will be supplying and cooking the sausage sizzle for all the students, teachers and parents, so we would appreciate volunteers to cook the barbecue and pack the sausage sizzle orders for each classroom and the parents for lunch. If you can assist with this for a couple of hours on the day please contact Vanessa Ga at president.pafc@gmail.com .

Wellington Street Crossing Guard The P&F are s ll seeking assistance from the parent community to volunteer to carry out a tra c and pedestrian count on Wellington Street to see if this area is eligible for a Crossing Guard.

The rst step in this applica on to the Children’s Crossings and Road Safety Commi ee involves having a school parent / rela ve or other member of the Infant Jesus community, volunteer their me for one hour before school and one hour a er school on that same day (at a date to be con rmed) to count or monitor the pedestrians and cars. Whether or not the applica on can progress and what type of Crossing Guard it shall require, will depend on whether the number of users of the intersec on meets the criteria imposed by the Commi ee.
