Germany is now the top choice for Indian students pursuing higher education. DAAD data shows 49,483 Indian students enrolled in the 2023-24 winter semester, a 15.1% increase from last year, surpassing China as the largest international student group.
In a statement issued by DAAD in early September, it was emphasized:
“The population of Indian students in Germany has surged twofold in the past five years. For the second year in a row, they represent the largest international student group in the country.”
The trend of Indian students choosing Germany for higher studies has seen consistent growth over recent years. Here’s a look at the increasing enrollment numbers:
2018-19: 20,810 students
2019-20: 25,149 students
2020-21: 28,905 students
2021-22: 34,134 students
2022-23: 42,997 students
2023-24 Winter Semester: 49,483 students
By comparison, the number of Chinese students in Germany stood at 39,137, followed by students from Syria (15,563), Austria (14,762), and Turkey (14,732).
