Liz the ultimate quiet achiever

By her own admission, Liz Marshall likes to fly under the radar. But when she recently won Sorrento’s prestigious "Women's Bowler of the Year Award" there was simply no avoiding the spotlight.A member at Sorrento for ten years, Liz beat a hot field to take out the award after a stellar season which included wins in the Pairs, Fours and Mixed Fours as well as being runner up in the Singles, Triples and 100-up Championships.

The quietly spoken Liz lets her bowls do the talking when she steps onto the bowling green and her relentless accuracy as a lead has become legendary. Yet she and her husband, Ian, an icon at our Club who served as President and is now a Life Member, met, not on the bowling green, but on a badminton court. That was when Liz, who grew up in the northern Sydney suburb of Hornsby, moved to Tom Price at the age of 15 when her father got a job with Hamersley Iron.

Liz also went on to live at Paraburdoo and Goldsworthy but it was at Port Hedland that she began her bowls journey. It was there that Ian had rolled up his sleeves and apart from playing the game, his roles there were so diverse they ranged from Club President to greenkeeper. “He was never home so I decided I might as well join him and that’s where I first started playing bowls in 1998,” Liz said. Fast forward 16 years and Liz had improved to the extent that she won the Sorrento Singles Champion title.
