Message from our President

S

eason's greetings to all our members and their families. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. The past 18 months have been difficult and frustrating. Hopefully 2022 will be a better year with lots of bowling, croquet, darts and social activities.

In September Brian Lucas advised the Board that he was stepping down from his role as the Appointed Director of the Governing Council (GC).

Brian has served in this role for the past six years and prior to that served as President for three years, Vice President for one year and Treasurer for two years. He was awarded life membership of the Sorrento Dart Club in 1997 and of the Sorrento Bowling Club in 2013.

Members may know that the role of the Appointed Director is non-operational and has specific responsibilities for strategic planning, governance, compliance, awards and grants. In this role he has helped the Club secure over $150,000 in grant funding in addition to the over $300,000 associated with the new synthetic green CSRFF grant.

Brian said that he has found his roles with the Club both rewarding and challenging. He said that he gained great satisfaction from seeing the Club’s membership double to over 800 moving from having a Second division top bowls side to gaining First Division and then Premier for both men and women, having six State bowls representatives this year; and of course since 2015 seeing the Club win three Bowls WA Metropolitan Club of the Year awards, five Clubs WA Club of the Year awards, entering the Clubs WA Hall of Fame in 2019 and also

in 2019 being runner up in Bowls Australia’s Bowling Club of the Year award. None of which he pointed out would have been achieved without the dedication of the Club’s 100 plus regular volunteers which includes the members of the GC. He expressed enormous gratitude to the Club’s unsung heroes. Those volunteers who continue to give generously of their time and energy and ask for nothing in return. He cited the times when on a chilly night he has sat in the warm and cosy bar with other members and watched our volunteers freezing out on the green while looking after social groups. He said that members should never take our volunteers for granted and in fact should join them.

During my six years as President, I can testify that Brian has been a tireless contributor to the GC, working collaboratively with other GC members and helping plot the future direction of the Club that has heralded much success.

He said that he is making his announcement with the expectation that members might come forward to volunteer their time to perform the role that he has been undertaking and offered to provide support and mentoring if required.

He asked me to pass on his appreciation to the other members of the GC for standing tall during the torrid times of Covid and staying true to their determination to see Sorrento remain “the best bowling club in Western Australia”.

We all thank Brian for his efforts, loyalty and commitment to our Club and for his contribution as a volunteer over so many years.

enise and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a happy Christmas and a great 2022.

In our June Quarter edition we paid tribute to our 22 Life members and in our March Quarter edition we recognised the tremendous contribution our volunteers make to the on-going success of our Club.

In this edition we have focussed on the etiquette of bowls and how this impacts on sportsmanship. We also have some more articles on "Getting to know our members".

Some more "Did you know" and "Did you hear" Did you know that Ray Stapledon loves feeding birds? He buys meat and seed and as a result seven magpies, dozens of corellas, pink and grey galahs, butcher birds, wattle birds, willie wagtails, mudlarks, a green red parrot and five kookaburras visit regularly.

Did you know that Chris Lander has been bowling since he was 15 years old? He reckons that he has put down about one million bowls! It is not surprising that his body is starting to complain a bit. Fifty years of bowling equates to 20,000 bowls per year, or nearly 400 bowls per week. That means he will have played the equivalent of nine 21-end Pennant matches every week.

Did you hear that Pat Dichiera reckons all his medical problems started after he took up lawn bowls? According to him he was not advised that it is such a physically demanding sport! He reckons he might have been better off by taking up footie or mountaineering!

Did you hear that on a Thursday afternoon when it was raining and we went to play under cover at Innaloo, Colin Bangs arrived without his bowls? He then had to borrow one bowl from three other bowlers and ended up playing brilliantly in spite of each bowling being different!

Did you hear that John Farmer is offering a prize to the first person who lets him know who the people are in this photograph from the West Australian's Real Estate page? He requires their full names and dates of birth before he will award the prize.

Did you know that we are no longer allowed to call the target we all go for "Jack" or "Kitty" anymore? It’s apparently not gender neautral,rude and offensive and not politically correct. Also Kitty is offensive to dogs!

Match Committee Reports Safeway Security Screens July Dash for Cash The wettest July in Perth for decades made the likelihood of holding the third scheduled Dash for Cash of 2021 an unlikely proposition, particularly as a couple of cold fronts passed through Perth earlier that week, but a decision was taken on Thursday to proceed, trusting

in the slightly more optimistic forecast for Saturday to remain largely dry. A couple of teams elected to drop out, but 24 teams of hardy men turned out for the event, Four rounds of 10 ends were played, with a soup-and-a-roll lunch provided by our team of volunteers being especially welcome to enable some thawing of cold bowlers. Ultimately, play was completed with only a brief break for a passing shower in the early afternoon. The greens (E and C) proved playable, albeit quite slow, as would be expected in the middle of this wet winter.

Safeway Security Screens August Dash for Cash The fourth and final Dash for Cash for 2021, again sponsored by SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS was held under grey but fine skies on Saturday 28 August. 22 teams of men had registered for this event but unfortunately, only 21 teams turned up, which meant a frantic search for players to make up an extra team. This search was ultimately successful, and a team was cobbled together of injured and part-time bowlers, including one lady, taking to the greens slightly later than planned.

Four matches of 11 ends were played, with two matches in the morning and two in the afternoon separated by the customary, but nevertheless

welcome, soup-and-a-roll lunch. Thanks to the ladies who provided the lunch, but also the morning tea prior to play. In total about eight ladies volunteered to help during the day, and their contribution was very much appreciated.

After the morning rounds, only four teams had won both matches, and by the end of the third match, only two teams remained undefeated, with one of these falling at the final hurdle. While there were 39 visiting bowlers of the 88 competing, Sorrento players dominated the results.

Masters Mixed Fours The third annual Dyenamic Masters Mixed Fours carnival was conducted over the Sunday and Monday of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. This event was sponsored by the Sorrento Bowling Club.

The weather forecast was not too bright, but apart from one small rain interruption the event was completed on time under cool and cloudy skies.

Over 80 Premier and many State players entered this event, with three rounds of 15 ends played on Sunday and the top eight teams progressing to the knockout rounds on Monday. Six teams won all three matches on Sunday and automatically progressed, but there was a very tight battle for the 8th and final spot, with only percentage separating three teams who each had two wins and a shot differential of plus 17 shots. Sean Mawdsley’s composite team was the lucky team to progress. Notable teams not to progress were the two previous event winners skippered by Cody Packer and Blake Nairn.

The quarter-finals saw two of the four matches requiring an extra end to separate the teams that were to progress to the semi-finals. Sean Mawdsley continued his run by beating Chris Lander’s rink in one extra-end match, with Bruce Eagles’ composite side beating Rhett

Butler’s in the other. The final two semi-final spots went to Anthony Einfeld’s Mt Lawley combination who beat Jim Buchanan’s Joondalup side, and Darren Wilkinson’s composite team from the Bunbury area who defeated Glen Pauling.

In one semi-final, Darren Wilkinson, with Kerry Ward, Gail Ecclestone and Gary Giblett triumphed over Sean Mawdsley 15-11, and in the other, Bruce Eagles with Coral Smith, Kerry Hutchinson and Murray Hulbert comfortably accounted for Anthony Einfeld 19-9.

In the final, the Eagles combination pulled away to lead 10-3 after 8 ends, mainly due to astute running shots from Bruce, but then dropped a six and a two in consecutive ends to fall behind 10-11 after 10 ends. Steady bowling for the next four ends saw the Eagles side lead 15-12 coming to the 15th and final end. Despite their best efforts and extremely narrow misses, the Wilkinson team could not bridge the gap with the final score 17-12 in Eagles’ favour. The crowd appreciated the constant cut and thrust of the final, with the advantage changing several times each end. Congratulations to Coral, Kerry, Murray and Bruce for bringing the trophy “home” to Sorrento for the first time.

Thanks to the Match Committees for their part in organising this very successful and popular event, particularly to Dan Greig and Cheryl Greig, with help from several others such as Pauline Marsden, Ian Wittber, Wendy Flack, Trevor and Anne Orton, plus the morning tea team of volunteers.

Divorced Pairs Wednesday 29 September saw our annual Divorce Pairs competition, with 30 teams participating on what turned out to be a mixed weather day. The morning was chilly but playable, but after the lunch break, the weather allowed only five ends to be played before the heavens opened and all players scurried for cover. Despite the weather, the day was an enjoyable opportunity to compete. A huge thank you to Duncraig Plumbing Services (Wayne Raffaele) for sponsoring this competition.

The morning winners were Pauline Marsden and Adrian Rose (18 shots up) who, together with the afternoon winners Shelley Jeffs and Spider Webb (16 shots up), enjoyed prize money of $25 each. Runners-up were Kaye Martin and David Dunstan (24 shots up) who won $50 each. Overall winners pictured alongside were Bruce Eagles and Shona Carter (35 shots up) who enjoyed $90 each. Following the shortened playing time, all participants enjoyed a sausage sizzle. Thank you to Alan Susta for the preparation of the sizzle and the salads.

Men’s 100-Up Championships The finals were completed on Sunday 10 October in mild conditions with a light to occasionally moderate breeze. In the quarter finals, Alan Walton had a convincing win over John Sturk, while Ross Cunningham prevailed over Frank Tyson and Paul Knight beat Jan Konig in closer matches. Barney Fleiser open up a good early lead over Gary Bayne before Gary fought back to win a cliffhanger 101 to 99.

strongly and never being headed, although Gary put in some good counters to extend the game to 19 ends. Paul had to work harder against Alan, with the game being tied at 75 apiece after 15 ends, but Paul finished strongly to win 101 to 89.

The final between Paul and Ross was a very close affair, with some classic draw bowling and the occasional on shot, watched by an appreciative crowd. Ultimately the slightly more consistent bowling of Paul narrowly prevailed, but not without major twists to the script in the last two ends.

On the 19th end, Paul was lying with nine points, which would have given him the win, before Ross came precisely through the head to move the jack back, tie the end and leave the score at 94-96. Down on the last end Ross took control of the head Runner up Ross Cunningham, and was lying seven points, Marker Alan Walton, Winner Paul Paul’s final drive – the first Knight and organiser Dan Greig one of the match – took the jack back to the ditch giving him eight points and the win.

Women's 100 Up Singles Championship In early October five sections of three players played this annual event.

In an alignment round between Kaye Martin and Jackie Maxwell the score was very close for the entire game, with the result coming on the final bowl of the game in Jackie's favour, winning 101-99. In the semi-finals, Jackie played Pauline Bourne and Robyn Woodward played Liz Marshall. Both Pauline and Liz were too consistent and the final was set for a rematch of last year's event.

Liz started strongly notching up a 23-7 lead but Pauline settled and the scores levelled within a few ends.

Both players put down fine draw bowls and the scores remained close. With several strong ends late in the game, Pauline took the lead and held it to eventually win the game 101-89. It was good to see the players supported by spectators who witnessed some great ends, close games, and good sportsmanship over the two days.

Our Newest Life Member

C

ongratulations to our newest Life Member, Trevor Orton. At our last AGM Trevor was presented with his Life Membership award by Joondalup Deputy Mayor, Russ Fishwick. He becomes the 23rd Life Member of the Sorrento Bowling Club. This is Trevor's third life membership award. His two previous life memberships were awarded by the Shell Social Club where he spent over 20 years serving as the President, the Secretary and/or the Treasurer. His other life membership award was in recognition of his six year contribution as Treasurer of the Perry Lakes Basketball Referees Association.

Trevor joined Sorrento in 1999 and for the last 20 years has been on the Match Committee where he has been highly effective in organising, promoting and running a plethora of different events such as: • Social bowls • Weekly twilight bowls throughout the winter • Nominated and drawn pairs • Triples and fours • Parent and child competitions • Sorrento versus the Police competitions • RSL and Master Builders competitions • Evening community bowls • 100 Up competitions • Sponsored events such as Dash for Cash and Trevor Carpets • Our annual Club championships, • State and National tournaments and many more.

Trevor is well regarded by Bowls WA and sits on their Fixtures and Events Committee. In 2020 he was elected as a member of our Governing Council in the position of Vice President (Sports and Participation) and in 2021 was re-elected unopposed.

Trevor has always shown exemplary skills in running smooth and well organised events, representing the Club well, working constructively with volunteers and management, and maintaining enthusiasm and harmony. His planning and organisation skills, knowledge of the game and rules surrounding the running of events, computer and technology skills, interpersonal, presentation and finance skills are of the highest quality.

He is patient, tolerant and innovative and possesses a sense of humour – all attributes required to overcome members' objections.

Organising over 100 events per year while maintaining a professional reputation for the standard and conduct of events, including State and

National tournaments and championships, speak highly of Trevor’s dedication, skill and knowledge. As one of the best bowlers in our Club, he has won a number of competitions and always does well in Pennants. He is never one to stack his team with 1st Division bowlers and is prepared to support new and old members.

Trevor's award was immediately recognised with 64 congratulatory messages on Facebook. We are indeed lucky to have someone with Trevor's skills and attributes in our Club.

Our Training and Development program

T

his year the Club has had many brand new bowlers join and it was decided that their training and development needed to be a priority. Eight bowlers participated in a pilot six week program designed

by Bruce Eagles and Richard Bone. The programme combined theory along with on green drills and the aim was to teach new bowlers the fundamentals of the game.

Gamesmanship/Sportsmanship/ Etiquette Definitions Bowls, croquet and darts are our Club sports but they share the same psychology as other sports like golf, cricket and football. All sports share the same ideals of sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is defined as fair, generous, and polite behaviour and is always important in sport. Etiquette covers the formal rules of correct or polite behaviour and is a combination of good manners, sportsmanship, and sociability. Gamesmanship is a tactic often used contrary to the concept of sportsmanship and the etiquette guidelines for a sport. It is the use of dubious (although not technically illegal) methods to win or gain an advantage. It is described as pushing the rules to the limit by bending the rules, but not breaking them, to achieve a desired end. It is often about intimidating and/or winding up the opposition hoping this will put them off their game.

Gamesmanship in action We have all seen this in action, be that overly bouncing a tennis ball or wanting excessive time outs for toilet breaks or by distracting an opponent by commenting, laughing, criticising or even filming their action on their mobile phone. One classic example was a golfer asking his opponent, who was playing a sensational game, whether he was breathing in or was breathing out at the time he made contact with the ball. The player started to think about this, became distracted, lost focus and his game fell away. In AFL some players resort to "Staging" through excessive exaggeration of contact in an unsportsmanlike manner. Soccer players fall in agony pretending they were deliberately fouled hoping to be awarded a penalty. The

moral question here is whether such tactics, while not breaking any rules, is in the spirit of game.

Some more examples

There are plenty of such examples of bowlers not ready to bowl; taking excessive time to deliver their bowl; needlessly following their bowl up the green; deliberately standing in a position to distract their opposition; and making annoying comments with the intention of being overheard by their opponents. Croquet players will sometimes laugh or ask a question as their opponent is about to play. Talking, jingling spare change, or rustling a lolly paper are also used for a bit of gamesmanship.

pering using trouser zippers, sandpaper or sticky lollies.

During important Darts games tactics used to unsettle your opponent are, as they are about to throw, standing behind them and clicking your darts together, talking within earshot, shuffling your feet, clinking the water jug and glass, clearing your throat and coughing and whistling. It might also be achieved simply by making silly faces behind a players’ back.

Some people have the rare attribute of being extremely annoying without even trying to exercise gamesmanship, often to the detriment of their own team. Examples include coaching their own players, telling teammates what they are doing wrong and explaining how they would do it, commentating on the actual bowls trajectory and giving players information that they clearly already know, such as “you’re short again”. Perhaps this is “ reverse gamesmanship”.

So, back to the original moral question “is gamesmanship part of the game and therefore OK? In a tri-series cricket final in 2006, Sachin Tendulkar was given out caught behind off a ball that had hit his shoulder. Ricky Ponting, the Australian Captain, and his team discussed what should be done and then requested the umpires to call him back to the crease. We all remember the "Hand of God" scored

by Maradonna in the 1986 World Cup. Many years after scoring the controversial goal, Maradonna confessed on a program La Noche that the goal was actually scored with his hand.

Conclusion Would this occasion be more favourably remembered by Ricky Ponting than a victory that involved destroying a young batsman’s confidence through not being honest or playing the game fairly. Would you enjoy a victory from a tussle that was based on merit and the best team winning or beating a better side by upsetting them? Personal

choice of course but in the end your behaviour reflects on you, your team and your Club.

Horrible Bowls Etiquette

H

ere are some more ways you can deliberately upset your opposition with a bit of gamesmanship which is the art of winning without actually cheating. If it's applied against you it’s dirty play; the other way round, it’s clever psychology. Here are some suggestions: Obscure the peg Stand in front of the peg. A number of bowlers use the peg to get their line. A variation on this is to surreptitiously move the peg or the marker being used by your opponent.

Foot faults As your opponent is about to bowl remind him of the foot fault rules to make him aware that you’re watching his feet and put him off.

Talk to the opposition’s bowls Shout or laugh at your opponent’s bowls.

Comments such as “miss everything” or “no wicks", are particularly useful. If you get a lucky wick claim that it was deliberate. If your opponent gets a wick describe it as lucky.

Argue and kick Argue vehemently about the number of bowls removed from the head during measuring. Kick counted bowls away so that there’s additional confusion. Deride the opposition if they put down a duster for placing counted bowls.

Insist on a measure Some bowlers will insist on a measure even when this is not required.

"If you want three you measure" is a way of getting into the opposition's head.

Encourage the drive at a critical stage This is a good strategy to adopt especially if the person has been drawing beautifully all afternoon.

Swap stickers If the opportunity arises swap the small and large Pennant stickers on your opponent's bowls so that they play a wrong bias.

Long ends Playing long ends in a friendly social when the green is slow and your opponent is old and can't reach the head.

Exaggerate problems Whenever the opposition complains about the rink you should immediately agree that the backhand is impossible to play. Exaggerate the problems! Sympathise excessively with the moaning opponent who grizzles about the team, the green and the wind. Finally remember: “If you want to beat somebody on the bowling green, just get into their heads by making them mad.”

Opening Day for 2021/22 Season

N

inety members enjoyed Opening Day on Sunday 19 September.

Guests included our patron, City of Joondalup Mayor, Albert Jacob, as well as COJ Councillors Russell Fishwick, Christine Hamilton-Prime and John Raftis. Our President, John Abercrombie, welcomed all and Mayor Jacob congratulated our Club on once again being awarded the Medium Club of the Year by Clubs WA, and reassuring us that work of the much-anticipated synthetic green was still on track. We were pleased that a number of Life Members and their partners were able to attend the festivities.

Announcements and presentations to last season’s Championship winners then took place. Congratulations to the winner of the Men’s Bowler of the Year, Kyle McIlroy, and Women’s Bowler of the Year, Pauline Bourne.

Those assembled then took to the green for the traditional Club photo.

The ceremonial rolling of the first bowl for the season followed, with Russell Fishwick showing the benefit of being a regular bowler and drawing closest to the jack. Next, the striking of the first croquet ball demonstrated John Raftis’ hidden talent.

After lunch we went back onto the greens under cool and cloudy skies to do battle in the annual Des Bennett Trophy match between mixed teams of “men” and “women”. The men emerged triumphant by 178 shots to 164, and now lead five wins to four since the trophy was inaugurated.

Thanks to the Croquet ladies Thora Lay. Kerry Bomford, Trish Klemp, Diana McGivern, Judith Skeet, Jan Craddock and Sandy Boon who provided the excellent morning tea, and to Cheryl Greig, Shelley Jeffs, Anne Orton, Pauline Marsden and Trevor Orton for their help in organising the day. Cheryl's flowers were beautiful and were zapped by members who wanted to take them home!

Getting to Know Our Members

B

rian Staples has sometimes been restricted by a crook back, but when it comes to putting his shoulder to the wheel it’s a totally different story.

Becoming a recent and highly-valuable member of our Club’s Match committee is just another addition to the list of achievements Brian has managed since his early days in the tiny town of Witchcliffe in WA’s South West.

In those carefree days his sporting prowess was already on display as he and his siblings,

Graham, Rhonda and Trevor belted a tennis ball around on the grass court their father Ron had fashioned alongside the family home.

Other sports abounded down there as well and Brian later became a very good golfer – but, given his family’s sporting genes, that came as no surprise either. The name Staples is deeply entrenched in modern day West Australian sport with Perth based husband and wife jockeys Craig and Lisa Staples being closely related.

Craig’s father Rod, who was also a successful hoop, is the Staples siblings’ cousin. And Brian’s sister Rhonda Prosser has also made her mark in the sporting world and, after starting at Sorrento, is now a Premier division player at North Beach and a Skip in WA’s Over-60’s squad.

During those formative times at Margaret River primary school, the word is that Brian was a quiet achiever and simply just got things done, rarely getting into trouble in the process.

Over time the Staples family, father Ron and his wife Ada as well as Graham, Brian, Rhonda, and Trevor all drifted up to Perth to begin a variety of ventures Brian started in an office job with the TNG Group before moving to Brisbane in the tube making industry. He and his wife, Thea, have four children and are now proud grandparents seven times over.

For not the first time Brian’s back, about which he never complains, gave him grief and he had to reluctantly give golf away. But with an attitude which still prevails to this very day when he sets his mind to it, nothing stood in Brian’s way. Deciding he needed a change of scenery he chose to become a postman. The major barrier was that he couldn’t ride a motorbike. But for someone as determined as Brian,

that problem was quickly resolved. He must have been extremely popular on his delivery rounds because, come December, he was also often on the receiving end of Christmas presents.

After giving golf away Brian was persuaded by his brother-in-law, Rhonda’s husband Ron, to take up bowls. (Rhonda and Ron pictured alongside). Although it’s not obvious, below the surface Brian has an extremely competitive nature, as evidenced by his high success rate with his partner Stu Wright in Sorrento’s weekly 2x4x2 competition.

Now aged 68, Brian likes to think he has pretty much retired but his love of photography and his long involvement in maintaining a family tree keeps him busy. Then there is the task of being a time consuming extreme fan of the East Perth Football Club. Brian has never given up hope that the Royals will return to their halcyon days of three premierships in a row twenty years ago. He also is very obliging when associates in the industrial pumps industry ring and ask if he could give them a bit of a hand. Brian is always willing to help out. But then again, that’s just the sort of bloke he is.

Our Ladies Captain Cheryl Greig

W

ith such a diverse list of jobs on her CV, Cheryl Greig shouldn’t have any trouble slotting into her latest challenge as Sorrento’s new Ladies Captain.

From the moment she started working as a secretary/sign writer, Cheryl has been an achiever in a wide range of jobs and the signs now point to her continuing that success in her latest venture with our Club.

The second-youngest of eight siblings, Cheryl learnt from an early age that knuckling down to the task is absolutely necessary for success and her attitude in that regard has not changed to this very day.

Cheryl was born in the far north Queensland town of Innisfail, reputed to have the second-highest rainfall in Australia after Tully, which lies 53kms further south.

Her early days were awash with fun as she and her three sisters and four brothers kicked around town and attended the East Innisfail State Primary School. Cheryl rounded off her education at Charters Towers before returning to Innisfail to take on her first job.

She later moved to Cairns where she married a local lad, John, in 1975 and the pair instantly took off in a newly acquired caravan to begin a three-year working holiday. They stuck to the capital cities where work was guaranteed, Cheryl gaining employment as a personal assistant for a boss at Lloyds of London in Melbourne and then as secretary to the manager of TAA in Sydney.

She and John then decided to move to Perth in 1984 and set up a fruit and veg business in Lynn Street, Trigg. Then followed a stint at their ice cream parlour, a venture Cheryl describes as “geographically crazy” as she had to drop her kids off to school where they lived in Karrinyup and then drive all the way to Midland to open up shop.

Cheryl remarried (to Jim) and for a while worked as a retail assistant at the prestigious John Walker chocolatier shop in the Karrinyup shopping centre. Then followed a stint as the manager of Rellim

Booksellers in Hay Street and later in a newsagency back at Karrinyup.

That job fortuitously led to Cheryl’s introduction to bowls in 2016 when the staff decided to hold their Christmas bash at the Scarborough Sportsman’s Club. While there she bumped into Sorrento stalwart Ray Stapledon, who offered some free coaching and an introduction to our bowling club. The rest is history and Cheryl now has her name in gold type on the Sorrento honour board along with Jackie Maxwell and Kath Harris as winners of the Club Championship triples in 2020-2021.

Cheryl is extremely family orientated, an attitude which indeed extends to the Sorrento Bowling Club. “There are some really good people at Sorrento and I’d love to see the Club get going again in terms of absolute unity,” she says.

She is naturally immensely proud of her three children and seven grandchildren as well as her three step children and their two children.

Her eldest, son Mark, lives in Switzerland and has two sons named Jann (eight years) and Finn, who is rising four. Her daughter, Sharnie, lives close by and has three daughters including six-year-old twins Evelyn and Charlie plus nine months old Madelaine. Son Clayton also lives in Perth and has two children named Johnny (8) and Imogen (5).

And rounding off her extended family are step grandchildren Thomas (11) and Autumn (7).

Help Needed!

A

t a recent company director’s course, the presenter informed participants that the most vulnerable business organisations operating in Australia are the not for profits – including community clubs like Sorrento. Why? Because not for profit organisations are subject to the same level of compliance scrutiny as large corporations but don’t have the resources to employ the necessary skilled labour, instead relying on volunteers.

One of the major components of a governance framework is the organisation’s policies and procedures. Sorrento currently has almost thirty major policies.

We are seeking the services of a volunteer or volunteers to help maintain these policies and on occasion, to develop new policies as the need arises.

To undertake the role, you need to have research and analytical skills and reasonable written skills. The role is not onerous as far as time goes because the policies have already been developed and mostly require review and where necessary updating.

Naturally you will work closely with the Office Manager and the Governing Council.Sound like you? If so, then please contact the President or a member of the GC to discuss further.

Another Award for Sorrento

o win a Clubs WA Club of the Year award is a major achievement for any club, but to win five such awards for excellence is quite something else. Some members think that winning these awards is simply about being able to write a good submission. While a good submission is certainly necessary, it's not why a club wins such accolades.

Clubs WA is an association that has over 500 member clubs ranging from football clubs, bowling and recreational clubs through to yacht and golf clubs, all of which are eligible to apply for an annual Club of the Year award in their particular category (small, medium and large clubs). A great many clubs submit their annual nominations for these prestigious awards. Each club must demonstrate excellence against wide ranging and comprehensive criteria that include: • T he growth, sustainability and diversity of membership • Their processes that ensure compliance with statutory laws and regulations • Their processes to ensure financial strength, sustainability and transparency • Rigorous strategic and operational planning and forecasting procedures

• T heir adherence to the Associations Incorporations Act and good governance standards • Their organisation structure, role statements, delegations and communication strategies • Volunteers' contribution to the operations of a club by its members • Other achievements and innovations.

Can’t you just make this up someone said to me? Well, no, as our Club is visited by an awards judge who checks the veracity of our submission by observing and questioning the claims made in the document.

The examination is thorough. During the judge’s visit for this award, he spent a substantial amount of time painstakingly asking questions of our management and staff, checking the premises and management structures, checking our licensing and liquor and gaming compliance documentation and examining every policy and procedure in operation. These ranged from occupational health and safety, member protection, alcohol, COVID procedures, harm minimization through to cyber security.

What’s the point in winning these awards someone asked? As well as providing an external and independent evaluation and assessment of our Club’s ongoing performance. These awards carry great weight with our key stakeholders such as • Local members of Parliament (both State and Federal) • City of Joondalup • Our Sponsors Winning these awards assists in gaining grants and new Sponsors; improving Sorrento’s reputation within the community and among other clubs; and helps us attract new members. But most importantly these awards recognise and are a testimony to the hard work and passion showed by our many regular volunteers and the stewardship

of the Club’s management. Every member should be justifiably proud of what Sorrento has achieved over the past five years. We have a wonderful Club and it was a bit irritating one Saturday afternoon, at the Osborne Park Bowling Club, to hear one of our members telling everyone, around the table, that "Osborne Park has better greens, cheaper beers and higher prize money than Sorrento!" Perhaps he should resign and join Osborne Park.

Finally we need to say a special thank you to Life Member Brian Lucas who has for many years prepared the detailed and comprehensive documentation required for our annual submissions for both the Club's WA and the Bowls WA awards. Without his input we would not have won all the awards shown alongside.

Tribute to Ted O'Grady 1933-2021

T

ributes flowed, the good times recalled and Ted McGrady’s love of Liverpool highlighted at the recent funeral of the Sorrento stalwart. Ted was farewelled as Gerry Marsden’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” football anthem reverberated and family and friends celebrated his 88 years of life.

Edward James McGrady was born on the 22nd of April 1933 in Liverpool, the eldest of six children. Growing up through the turmoil of World War II saw Ted’s father leave to take up active service and though Ted was just a child, he took on many responsibilities in looking out for his younger siblings and helping his mother. With Liverpool a target for German bombing raids, the family moved to

Elllesmere Port for safety only to have the bombs continue to fall there.

At his funeral, some of Ted’s attributes were listed as patience, being a gentle soul, a quiet character, dependable, always present in his family’s lives, having a great sense of humour, being a story teller, a great handyman and having a deep love of sports and animals.

In his early days after War broke out, Ted played for the local MostynAlbion soccer team in Wales and joined the Navy at the age of 20 and worked as an engine room mechanic. Mourners at his funeral were told of the time when Ted was in Malta and missed the last tender boat from the mainland and decided to swim back to his ship. But being a bit under the weather from the night before Ted started swimming in the wrong direction. A Maltese fishing boat eventually picked him up and returned him to the British Navy – the penalty being losing one of his stripes.

Ted later worked in various roles at two power stations for 30 years before taking early retirement at the age of 58. In the meantime, Ted had met Sonia through his sister and fellow nurse Heather, the pair hitting it off straight away and they were married in 1962. As their family expanded with the arrival of son Ian and daughters Kerry and Sue, Ted and Sonia contemplated buying a house in Spain in order to avoid the harsh British winters.

But after their three kids all moved to Australia, the Spanish plan was abandoned and the pair themselves set sail for Perth in 2004. Ted and Sonia hooked up with the Sorrento Bowling Club pretty much straight

away. Ted might have been demoted after his Malta misdemeanour but he well and truly earned his stripes with Sorrento. He was a longterm Pennants player with our Club, achieving considerable success as a member of Des Bennett’s team as well as skippering on social bowls days.

Ted, typically soldiered on with his bowls for a couple of years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Sonia continued to care for him until he was transferred to hospital where he sadly passed away after a brief time in respite.

The annual Cancer Fundraising Day

T

his event was held on Friday 24 September with 42 players taking part. The weather was lovely but the green quick, which made for some tricky conditions. Winners on the day were John Jackson, Doug Pittaway, Steve Platts and Colin Scott (pictured) with runners up Jennifer Page, Robyn Woodward, Bev Carrigy and Steve Bomford. An amount of $620 was raised for the Cancer Foundation through competition fees and donations from members and the Club. Well done to all!

eet the bowler you may not begrudge losing to. A huge personality and very much larger than life – his presence fills the rink

and overflows onto the rest of the green. You could be two rinks away but you can still tune in to what Bob Mulroy is up to. Pure entertainment with his comments and antics are a most welcome distraction.

Bob has a ton of experience and a treasure chest of stories reaching back over the years. His animated discussions hold our attention and create amusement and merriment during after game drinks.

Bob completely overpowers his surroundings – a terrific bowler and even more enjoyable as a person. Everything he says is tongue in cheek with a sparkle in the eye. Is he joking or is he serious? With his mischief and jocular mayhem, we will never know.

When you bowl against Bob it is very easy to read his game. You can predict exactly what shot he is going to play next and you can envisage his line. If you think that might be good, the bad news is that there is not much you will be able to do about it.

Sure as “eggs are eggs” he will be bang on target and your "ass will be grass". Horrible, to play against guys like these! Could be quite painful if it wasn't for the lively personality and the constant good-natured jibes that take away the some of the sting.

Bob will confess with the deepest sincerity that he fears your ability and would rather not play against you and all the while you will get this strange sensation that someone is cutting the grass under your feet. Moments later your worst fears may be realised when he systematically demolishes your game and proceeds to whip your ass!

Bob exudes leadership and sheer force of personality – this is the guy who helped last year’s Div. 3 to win the season and gain a promotion

to Div. 2. During Pennants Bob can be found striding up and down urging and encouraging all Sorrento teams to spur on their efforts to win the aggregate for the day.

More Help Needed!

rant income is extremely important to the Sorrento Bowling Club, resulting in more than $150,000 into the Club’s coffers over the past decade. We are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to help secure this crucial grant funding for the Club. The role involves scanning the various grant funding sources, mainly federal, state and local governments but also other funding agencies such as LotteryWest and Healthways.

Where opportunities are identified to seek grant funding this role prepares the necessary application in response to the relevant selection criteria and follows up with associated paperwork. Once a successful grant has been completed an acquittal process is required.

To undertake the role, you need to have research and analytical skills and reasonable written skills. The role is not onerous as far as time goes because the policies have already been developed and mostly require review and where necessary updating.

Tribute to Arthur Richards – 1922-2021

T

he life of recently deceased and revered Sorrento bowler Arthur Richards can best be described as remarkable.

For in reaching the age of 99, Arthur was able to accumulate a staggering list of achievements during the toughest of times during the 20th century which included the Great Depression and World War II. But during those troubled times and beyond, Arthur ploughed through and his contribution to a fascinating and diverse range of prominent ventures speaks volumes for his willpower and integrity.

Fast forwarding, from a Sorrento Bowling Club point of view, Arthur was pure gold. He was Club Secretary in 1997-98, President during 1999-2000, Chairman of Selectors two or three times, worked on Match committee, played in the top division as a Skip and was a qualified coach.

Born on 26 June 1922, Arthur grew up in difficult times like countless other kids, and during his primary school education rode a horse seven miles each way to the nearest school at Wedgiegarrup in the Wagin Shire. He finished his secondary school education in Bunbury and at the age of 20 was the sole teacher at Hyden Rock in the south-eastern wheat belt.

Even at that tender age, Arthur had a burning desire to be a fighter pilot but his parents insisted he forge a career before they would sign the papers to enable him to volunteer for the RAAF. Having met that criterion, Arthur learnt to fly Tiger Moths at Cunderdin, before get-

ting a lift on a troop ship to San Francisco and then London on the Queen Elizabeth.

There was no stopping him now but the stark reality was that Bomber pilots were far more in demand over Germany than those who wanted to fly the sportscar like Spitfires. And so, Arthur rose through the ranks, firstly as a pilot on the two engine Wellingtons and the four engine Stirlings before ending up in command of a mighty Lancaster Bomber – then the biggest aircraft in the world with a crew of seven brave souls.

He was posted to the 467 Squadron at Waddington in Lincolnshire and after getting half-way through his obligatory 30 bombing missions, set off for a raid on Koenigsberg. After a heavy hit, which engulfed the Lancaster’s port inner engine in flames, Arthur and his crew had to parachute to safety. He survived the plunge and melted into the countryside for a couple of weeks, after abandoning a plan to steal a boat and reach neutral Sweden, but was eventually captured and spent nine months in a POW camp near Berlin. He and the other 13,000 prisoners there eventually returned to their various homelands and Arthur made his girlfriend his wife.

The problem was that, as unlikely as it may seem, a lot of young pilots of the day had not yet obtained a license to drive a motor vehicle.

When Arthur turned up at the Roe Street police station to rectify that situation, the desk sergeant noticed the wings on his battle jacket and asked, “What have you been flying?” “Lancaster Bombers out of England ,” Arthur replied. The policeman then asked, “Did you have any problem parking them?” To which Arthur casually replied, “No”.

The sergeant then asked Arthur to drive a couple of hundred yards down the road and stop. It so happened the arrival point was outside a hotel. “Let’s go and have a couple of beers, I reckon you deserve them,” the sergeant said. A couple of hours later Arthur was in possession of a licence which enabled him to drive a car, a truck, a motorbike and a passenger-carrying bus.

Arthur went back to teaching, firstly at the Leederville Primary School and later as principal at Wyalkatchem Junior High School.

Postings then included Mt Barker and Albany. In Albany, Arthur got onto the local council and for a period of nine months was the city’s acting mayor.

He loved to gamble at the casino and was often seen at the roulette tables. After retirement Arthur took a position as Chairman of the Great Southern Regional TAFE Committee before being approached by a Malaysian group of educators and businessmen to head up a secondary college in Perth, work which later took him to south-east Asia.

Arthur’s wartime trauma and the respect he had for his comrades never left him and he not only wrote a book called “Silk and Barbed Wire”, he became President of the Royal Airforce’s Ex-prisoner of War Association.

Arthur, like the rest of us, grew old but remained an active Skipper in Sorrento’s lower grades well into his 90’s. So, cheers old buddy. You certainly earned those couple of beers the admiring police sergeant bought you all those years ago.

Croquet Report

he Captain and Committee of the Croquet Section wishes every Club member a very safe and happy Festive Season; with everything of the best for 2022.

Annual Trophy Presentation Members of the Croquet section enjoyed a relaxed pizza lunch following a fun game of “Croquet Bowls”. This was very popular with the members, who made sure that close calls were “professionally”

measured before accepting a result! Coloured golf balls were used as “Jacks” with players trying to hit the croquet ball to stop as close to the jack as possible – only hitting it if it would to be an advantage for the player. It proved to be a very useful exercise in “placing” croquet balls. The main purpose of the day was, however, for the presentation of the 2020/21 Croquet trophies which were presented by Captain Kerry Bomford to the following: • Golf Doubles: Winners Thora Lay and Terry Harvey with runners-up Wendy Price and Margaret Windle • Golf Singles: Winner Jenny Wilmot with runner-up Jan Craddock.

The WA “Champion of Champions” Golf Croquet Singles competition was held in August with Jenny Wilmot representing Sorrento. The competition is open to all winners of their club’s singles championship. There were six players from the City Clubs and six from the Country Clubs, with handicaps ranging from minus three through to Jenny’s of 12.

It was, however, level play meaning that no allowance was made for handicaps. Jenny played some excellent shots and won a few hoops, but naturally was no match against so many State players. Well done to Jenny on her efforts and willingness to compete against such odds!

Sandy Boon, who recently joined Sorrento (having been the past-President of Nedlands) represented us in the Croquetwest Association Croquet ("AC") State Division 2 Doubles held at Gosnell's. She is currently our only AC player and although Sandy felt that she was a bit rusty after 18 months of not playing in competitions, she and her partner managed to place third.

Well done, Sandy!

At the end of August, Jan with Terry Craddock; and Di McGivern with Cheryl Saul, travelled to York for the country Doubles Golf Croquet Competition. A total of 24 pairs entered, including numerous State Players, and again the competition was “level play”. Our pairs placed 3rd and 5th respectively in their initial blocks and both were runners-up in the later play-off blocks. The number of competitors meant that the courts at the Beverley Croquet Club had to be used with competitors travelling 30km to get there from York. Nonetheless, the social aspects of the gatherings, and some excellent catering, made for a most enjoyable weekend.

Several members entered the Spring Festivals held in September at the Mandurah Croquet Club; and at Halls Head. It is great to see that many of our newer members nominated to play in these competitions.

Jan and Terry Craddock proved to be the big winners, by winning both the “B” and “C” Grade Competitions! Congratulations to them both.

Sorrento hosted a Ricochet Interclub Doubles Tournament on 12 October. The Busselton and Como teams tied for first place with Sorrento only narrowly losing out on the number of hoops won within the time allowed. A few years ago Sorrento were well known for their

skill at Ricochet but, unfortunately, interest in that particular game of Croquet was lost. We are now gradually re introducing the game of Ricochet, with new players to the game enjoying the different tactics and challenges.

Club Visit

Six players from East Fremantle Croquet Club visited Sorrento in August to enjoy a game of Golf Croquet and to see how our Croquet section interacted with our Bowling Club; as they are about to change their arrangements by combining with the bowling section of East Fremantle. They were very impressed by our Club and were grateful for the opportunity to learn how well we all worked and mingled together.

Clive and Jan get a Five Year Visa

I

f you think Clive Webber turned up early this season – there’s a very good reason.

For many years now it’s been a most welcome sight to see Clive stride through the door of our Club to spend another summer down under. Towards the end of each year, he and his wife Jan, would fly to Perth from England for

Clive to become a regular member of Sorrento teams. But this year, Clive was spotted having a roll-up a fair bit earlier than normal.

However, there is a logical explanation. Because travelling to and from England became so difficult the Australian Government decided to give Clive and Jan a five-year visa, meaning that we are guaranteed to have Clive in our ranks for quite some time.

Now aged 82 and having long retired as a butcher, Clive and Jan have sold up back in Somerset and have almost completed building their new abode on a large patch of land their son, Edward, bought in Gnangara. There have not been too many plusses to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic but having the affable Clive around our Club permanently is certainly a good example of one.

Beyond Blue Annual Charity Day

n the middle of October we held this special day. A good crowd of thirty social bowlers played on a warm and sunny day and $230 was raised from players' entry fees and some donations.

Club Makes Light Work of Grant

S

orrento was advised in October that it was successful in securing a federal government $8,900 Powering Communities grant to replace our existing fluorescent hall lighting with energy saving LED lights. The outcome from this lighting upgrade will be reduced energy use and therefore cost savings to the Club, improved energy productivity, reduced carbon emissions and a vastly improved lighting system. Sorrento would like to acknowledge the strong support received from the Federal Member for Moore, Ian Goodenough in securing this grant along with other federal grants secured over recent years.

A Reminder for a Smile!

Anyone remember the poetess Pam Ayres? Well, she's 73 and still going strong. This is her latest ode to COVID-19 I'm normally a social girl I love to meet my mates But lately with the virus here We can't go out the gates.

We didn't mind the change of pace Because our lives were full But to bury us before we're dead Is like a red rag to a bull!

So here you find me stuck inside For four weeks, maybe more I finally found myself again Then I had to close the door!

It didn’t really bother me I'd while away the hour I'd bake for all the family But I've got no flaming flour!

You see, we are the 'oldies' now We need to stay inside If they haven't seen us for a while They'll think we've upped and died.

They'll never know the things we did Before we got this old There wasn't any Facebook So not everything was told.

We may seem sweet old ladies Who would never be uncouth But we grew up in the 60s If you only knew the truth!

There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll The pill and miniskirts We smoked, we drank, we partied And were quite outrageous flirts.

Then we settled down, got married And turned into someone's mum, Somebody's wife, then nana, Who on earth did we become?

Now Netflix is just wonderful I like a gutsy thriller I'm swooning over Idris Or some random sexy killer.

At least I've got a stash of booze For when I'm being idle There's wine and whiskey, even gin If I'm feeling suicidal!

So let's all drink to lockdown To recovery and health And hope this awful virus Doesn't decimate our wealth.

We'll all get through the crisis And be back to join our mates Just hoping I'm not far too wide To fit through the flaming gates!

I would like to compliment Neville Odell and Jim Woodward for the fine job they do for our news magazine. I read it from cover to cover. I was amazed by the accuracy of Jim's reporting on newbie bowlers. He absolutely nailed it and captured all the defining characteristics of the individuals involved. Highly accurate reporting. The “Gripes and Groans” article was most useful setting out questions I have asked myself or heard others complaining about. I also enjoyed the interpretation of Skipper’s comments which were incredibly hilarious along with the many tongue in cheek asides from the Editor all through the publication. I never knew Neville had such a dry sense of humour. When reading about our Life Members I was somewhat awed and surprised that my 2-4-2 bowls partner, Ian Wittber, has such an illustrious background and history in our Club. It's raining and I was pleased to have an hour to fill, which I used to perfection by reading our latest Club magazine. It is so superb (as always). I particularly enjoyed the tribute to our life members. You're amazing Neville. Thank you very much.

Hi guys, Just want to let you know how perfect our night was on Saturday. We had around 70 people and we chose to play bowls..and yes the weather just held off. The volunteers were so kind and patient with us especially me as I kept running off to meet guests.

We spent about an hour and a half bowling and then spent the rest of the night partying in the hall. It was such a fun night. The club and staff were so kind, there were such good vibes all thru the night, so much so that I didn't take one photo!

Rob and I would like to say a huge thanks to Chloe, Rikki and Ian and the bowling volunteers for taking such good care of us. We will spread the word if anyone is looking for a place to host a good night
