Welcome to the 2023/24 Bowls Season

Awarmwelcome to all our new members for the upcoming season and it’s great to see some members returning to Sorrento after a break away.

Most pleasing from a club perspective as we start a new season is the filling of all positions. This includes a revitalised Governing Council, along with volunteers who are continuing in roles and the addition of “new blood”.

One of the volunteer groups that has been increased in number is our coaching squad. The continued commitment from Gary Bobridge (Coordinator), David Dunstan and Bruce Eagles has been backed with the introduction of Kerry Hutchinson and Paul Knight to the group. I would encourage all bowlers, both new and experienced, to take advantage of the expertise of our club coaches to improve any aspect of your game.

October sees Sorrento host three Nationals events between 6th and 16th. While there will be some disruption to our preseason, I hope members will remember this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our club.

Our fixtures include a wide variety of events, from the most social of days through to Championships, catering for all levels of involvement. This fixtures booklet has been put together early in the year, so there may be some changes to dates etc as we move through the season.

Finally, I would remind all bowlers to always treat our greens with respect. Our green keepers do a fantastic job maintaining our greens to a high standard all year round.

Here’s to a successful and enjoyable season for our club, both on and off the green.

Guidelines for Pennant Selectors and Bowlers for the 2023/2024 Season

Introduction:

• The Selectors will aim to select the best combination of teams within each division on club Pennant days to bring about on-green success for our Club

• The Selectors will attempt to be fair and reasonable in making Pennant selections

• The Selectors will treat every Pennant player with respect and, in return, expect every Pennant player to respect the Selectors regarding their decisions

• The Selectors will seek to adhere to the following guidelines in determining the makeup of divisions and rinks within divisions.

Guiding principles:

• A player’s ability/skill level will assist in determining the appropriate division to play in

• Playing history will assist in determining the appropriate division at the beginning of the season

• The previous season’s teams placements and results will be considered at the beginning of the season

• Compatibility with other players will be taken into consideration regarding rink formation

• Players with demonstrated people management skills will be preferred for a Skip’s position

• The Selectors will seek feedback from Skippers and team managers regarding the form of players

• Players will be advised prior to teams being announced of any demotion to a lower division. Reasons will be offered leading to the decision

• Promotions will not necessarily be advised prior to teams being announced

• The Selectors will take note of players who train regularly and seek to improve their overall game. “Reward for effort” will be considered in the selection process

• Rink stability will be highly regarded. One bad game will not lead to demotion. Selectors do not want players feeling anxious from week to week wondering if they will be retained in the rink

• Bad behaviour both on the green and off the green will not be tolerated. Respect for the Club, teammates and the opposition must always prevail

• The Selectors will listen to players who question their decisions. This will be arranged at a time conducive to both parties and be conducted in a respectful manner

• If a player makes him/herself unavailable for valid reasons it does not mean that the player will automatically be reinstated to the same rink/division on return.
