The printer had some problems with the margins and as soon as we told him he arranged for the entire order to be replaced. So if you want to keep a copy of our 40th Anniversary newsletter and yours is a bit off centre please feel free to take another copy and discard the badly printed copy.

This man has done so much for our Club and it is therefore important that his contribution over many years is fully recognised.

• Did you know the Kiwis get their geysers to blow at the same time each day i.e. just

as the tourist’s buses arrive. They “induce” them by dropping soap into the geyser so that the bubbles help build up a pressure. This started when prisoners held at a nearby jail accidentally induced the geyser to erupt after adding soap to the natural hot water source in order to wash their clothes.

• Did you know there is a controversial tourist attraction in Otago, in New Zealand. It

is known as “The Cardrona Bra Fence”. In 1998 passers-by began to attach bras to a rural fence. The fence gradually became a well known site as the number of bras grew to hundreds. In 2006, after discovering the fence rested on public road reserve, the local Council determined the bra fence was a “traffic hazard” and an “eyesore”, and ordered the bras on the fence to be removed. The fence’s removal led to an attempt to

make the world’s longest bra chain, at an annual festival in nearby Wanaka, later that year. The chain reached some 7400 bras, over 100 000 short of the world record, but raised over $10 000 for breast cancer research.

• Did you know that every Monday,

Colin Campbell becomes a volunteer driver for the Leukaemia Denise Odell about to donate Foundation tasked to transport leuher bra kaemia patients to hospital for their treatment. The service is provided free of charge every day of the week fully staffed by volunteer drivers. Colin joins Russ Lockwood who drives on Tuesdays and you will often see the two of them comparing notes on their experiences.

• Did you know two Australian lawn bowlers have been slapped with hefty bans for

sparking an all-in brawl between two teams at a top-level game. It’s believed one bowler bumped another while he was celebrating a delivery by running down the rink, jumping over the bowls and high-fiving his team mates. The first bowler allegedly retaliated with a blow to the other’s head, reportedly causing a cut in his mouth.

The incident sparked a melee involving players from both sides, delaying the game for at least 15 minutes. “Bowls Victoria cannot and will not condone this type of behaviour,” Bowls Victoria” said in a statement to reporters. “If you step over the line, you do the time.” They both pleaded not guilty to a number of charges, including acting in a threatening and intimidating manner, and bringing the sport of bowls into disrepute. But the Bowls Victoria disciplinary committee later found them guilty.

• Did you know the International Bowling Board was formed in 1905, the foundation

members being Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales. New Zealand was first admitted in 1928, as also were Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the United States of America. The IBB is now known as World Bowls.

• Did you know that Dick Currie is fluent in Japanese? He learnt the language when he was with the air force and stationed in Japan.

• Did you know that Ted and Sonia McGrady are expert line dancers.? You can see them in action every Monday at the Innaloo Bowling Club,

Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, located in Wellington, there is an exhibit and a movie about a sheep with a GoPro camera on its head. The movie covers the adventures the sheep gets up to during his day. My Aussie mate Skew Wiff Watt has penned this delightful poem alongside.

“Ram – Cam” I’ve been keeping an eye on my mother, For she’s causing some fear and alarm, She’s been ‘snapping” the world with her camera, At various points on the farm.

She says she is making a ‘movie’, Of love and intrigue among sheep, And she’s casting the ‘lead’ to a ‘shepherd’, Who is madly in love with “Bo-Peep”.

She’s been ‘filming’ the ‘extras’ in love scenes, And ‘strange’ sort of things came to pass.

She caught poor old Sam with another old ram, As they wandered around eating grass.

President’s Report

T

hank you to all our members for supporting the new Governing Council elected at our recent AGM.

The support for bowls and social events over the winter has been extraordinary, considering the last few months have been the coldest and wettest in Perth for a long time.

“To gain respect you have to give respect”

All bowls events run by the Women’s and Men’s Match Committees have been well patronised with the number of participants exceeding expectations.

The Saturday open bowls events have attracted an average of over 70 bowlers. By providing excellent greens during the winter months our Greenkeeper Alan has played a major part in getting this support from both our own members and bowlers from other Clubs

The last few social events have been close to a sell out on all occasions. The Social Committee, headed up by Jan Cook, have provided social evenings that cater for all members. I have heard that Jan and her committee have some special events lined up for the coming six months. So watch the notice boards! Thanks go out to all members of these committees for their time spent in organising these activities.

I would also like to thank Barry Bradshaw’s Security Screens for his sponsorship of our “Dash for Cash” event. Barry has sponsored this event for six years with great success and participation. Thanks Barry.

With summer approaching and hopefully warmer weather, Pennants, Club events and State events will be at the forefront of bowls at our Club. Please support these events as we want the Sorrento Bowling Club to be the most successful club in the Metropolitan area.

A new style fixture book of all events will be available on Opening Day. Our Croquet Club hosted the Men’s National Competition in early September.

Congratulations to all concerned in the organising and running of this event. A great event was held with very positive feedback from participants.

W

elcome to the new season for the Bowlers. It does not seem long ago that we finished last season. I hope we can carry on from our great season last year.

It is pleasing to hear that we will field approximately the same number of teams as last season in both Men’s and Women’s Pennants.

The men have their new blue trousers and the ladies are awaiting the arrival of their new shirts. The Club will look as one with uniforms being similar.

A new Pennant structure will be introduced next season and it will be interesting to see the end result and how long they intend to keep the new format.

Darts and Croquet are both performing well with one dart season ending and another starting early October. The season just ended was a good season for our Darts club.

Croquet will be hosting a State event before this goes to print. Well done on being selected to host this prestige event on the WA Croquet programme.

This is only a short note to start the season and more news will be reported as it comes to hand.

Men’s Bowls Captain’s Report

O

nce again I would like to thank everyone for allowing me to be the Men’s Captain for another year and I have to say I am honoured to have been chosen.

The 2016-2017 year will be an exciting one for our Club. We have now officially changed to Junior Navy trousers and shorts. We have over 160 bowlers who have purchased either trousers or shorts and I am so grateful for the ease of the change-over. There have been some funny stories which were published in the last newsletter. Since then there have been some more really funny stories but, to everyone’s credit, it was a great effort and I thank you all for your support.

In the coming year we have a great Governing Council with huge support from all the others elected in various positions. These people work hard to make our Club what it is today, so all we need now is your support to ensure another successful year as we did last year.

Another big thank you to all our members who have purchased the new casual Club shirt.

I have noticed them being worn around the Club. If anyone would like to purchase our new Club shirt with our Sorrento logo, please let me know and I will arrange your order.

There are two colours to choose from : Royal Blue or Navy Blue, at a cost of $35 or $40 if you would like a pocket.

I do hope everyone has a great Pennant Season with abundant success. Remember, you are playing as a team for your Club and not as an individual. United we will perform as one.

My congratulations to Sharon and the Women’s Committee for undertaking the change to the same shirt as the men’s. Again we are all united as a club.

Women’s Bowls Captain’s Report

T

he 2016-17 bowling season will soon be under way. Many of the events that we usually run will be happening as in past years. We look forward to you all being able to attend and take part in these entertaining functions.

The first of these was our annual Fashion Parade which took place on Tuesday 13 September. This function consisted of morning tea, a parade of fashions, raffles and displays and a delicious lunch. The fashions this year were supplied by K’Sara Fashions which is situated at the Duncraig Shopping Centre in Marri Road, Duncraig. A generous 10% discount was offered to Club members on the day and afterwards. Many thanks to Kerri, the owner, for being involved. Five of our lovely ladies ‘super’ modelled the elegant clothing, with the usual flair and expertise displayed at past parades. Photographs of the models will be included in the December newsletter.

The next major event will be our annual Opening Day, which is taking place on Sunday 18 September starting at 10.30am with morning tea. It is being sponsored this year by Barbaro Butchers of Cockman Road in Greenwood. The format is the same as the last couple of years with the official opening activities prior to lunch and then two games of bowls of 11 ends each. The competition is mixed teams with the Men’s Captain’s side versus the Women’s Captain’s side for the Des Bennett Memorial Trophy – so far won each year by the Men’s Captain’s side. Let us hope there is a change to the result this year.

The first of the more major bowling events for the season is the Divorced Pairs which is scheduled for Wednesday 28 September. This is a mixed pairs competition in which the man and woman who team up are not allowed to have played together during the winter 13

season. This is a fun event taking the whole day.

At the end of last season, the women of the Club voted in favour of changing our Pennant shirts to match the graphic design of the men’s current shirt. It is unlikely these will be ready for Opening Day but should be available for the beginning of the Pennant season.

It will be wonderful to see us all, men and women alike, wearing the one stunning club shirt and presenting such a unified front.

I would like to extend a hearty welcome to a number of new players, particularly the female ones, who have joined Sorrento in the last few months to play bowls. Some of these have come from interstate and some from other local clubs. New members continue to add extra strength and skill to our already flourishing club membership. So welcome everyone and I hope you enjoy your time at Sorrento Bowling Club.

I trust everyone will have a great season and really enjoy their games, no matter which club sport they participate in. I hope for continued and/or improved success for our players and teams. And wish you all a wonderful, fruitful and enjoyable season 2016-17.

Presentation on Cyber Crime Tony Krsticevic sponsored a seminar on educating Seniors on safe internet usage. The presentation was aimed at the “Golden Baby Boomers” (also known as the GBB’s) i.e. those born between 1920 and 1950. David Cook who led the discussion said that the main problem areas were • Trojans in e-mails (especially chain e-mails) and users visiting pornography sites • Old routers and modems • Windows XP (no longer supported by Microsoft) • Cafe and other free internet sites (don’t use free wifi for internet banking) • Weak passwords (don’t use 123, birthdays, pet’s names etc. – phrase known only to you is better) Fixture booklet The Match Committees accepted the Sponsorship Committee’s recommendation to have a joint Fixture booklet instead of the separate cards used previously. This has provided us with an opportunity to include all our major Sponsors adverts in this booklet to promote the goods and services offered by our sponsors throughout the season. J

ust like the unassuming person he still is today, Brian Lucas walked into the Sorrento Bowling Club in 1985 like any other newcomer simply looking to take up the sport.

Little did we know at the time but here was a new member whose value to our Club would become unsurpassed by any other person who has ever stepped onto our greens.

Foundation member and long-time coach Graeme Heard easily remembers Brian’s arrival at Sorrento and his first steps as a bowler. “He started in the lower grades like everyone else but he had a natural ability and beautiful delivery and he took to the game like a duck to water” Graeme recalled.

It wasn’t too long before Brian was playing in first division and in 2015 was joint “Bowler of the Year”. But just as significant was his decision to also dip his toe into the water regarding our Club’s administration. It was a path which wound its way through many committees and all the way to becoming Club President. But then Brian’s pedigree as an administrator runs as deep as his wicked sense of humour.

Underlying his calm demeanour is a relentless street-fighter. Brian left school at an early age and, after starting in government at its lowest ranks, studied his way to its high peaks.

He constantly “up-skilled” and worked longer hours than you would normally associate with the Public Service (though typically he’d make a joke about it).

Hidden by that constant supply of jokes which match any conversation, (mainly attributed to a remarkable memory), and a personality most personified by modesty, Brian went on to enjoy a long and highly successful career in Government. During that time he worked in highly-strategic senior management roles, managing hundreds of people and many millions of dollars.

Post his retirement, Brian was seconded by the department of Premier and Cabinet to orchestrate the combining of the Education Department and TAFE, two of the largest organizations in Western Australia.

It goes without saying his expertise in management, human resources and financial control were gifts from heaven as far as the Sorrento Bowling Club was concerned. Thanks to Brian’s efforts, our Club has resurrected itself from being in the doldrums to one of high respectability in the bowling fraternity.

Phil Oldershaw remembers that in 2005-2006 Sorrento had a loss of $1824. The following year we had a surplus of $21 173. In 2007-2008, the first year Brian was Treasurer, Sorrento had a surplus of $17 842. The second year he was Treasurer, that surplus had swollen to $106 469.

Whatever position Brian has held he has always done a remarkable job. His patience, approachability and willingness to listen to suggestions are special attributes. In addition his ability to think both strategically and clearly led to the drafting in 2010 of a long term plan. This helped our Club to address weaknesses and identify a number of activities to improve the operation, whilst increasing our overall membership. Brian updated the plan in 2015 under the name “Continuing to Thrive through 2025 – Planning for the future of the Sorrento Bowling Club 2016 -2025”. This well-thought-through and comprehensive document will again stand us in good stead over the next 10 years.

Another important contribution Brian has made was implementing the organisational 18

change which resulted in our move from an Executive Committee to a Governing Council.

With the support of the members Brian restructured the Club’s Constitution and Bylaws to allow the change to come about in 2015.

Brian also played a major role in preparing the submissions which led to the Sorrento Bowling Club winning five prestigious awards: • Bowls WA 2011/12 Metropolitan Club of the Year • 2013 Metropolitan Club of the Year in the Small/Medium Category.

• Bowls WA 2015/16 Metropolitan Club of the year award, • 2016 Club of the Year (Medium) Award for Excellence.

• 2016 Club Manager of the Year award Through his various contacts he has secured numerous grants which have allowed the Club to benefit. Over recent times he has applied for a: • “Big Ideas” Lottery West grant of $1.3 million to build undercover bowling facility on E-Green (unsuccessful) • “Stronger Communities” grant from the Federal Government Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development for $13 200 to assist with kitchen refurbishment (successful) • “Sports Development Program” grant for $18 750 to undertake a feasibility study for an undercover bowling facility (pending) • “Sports Development Program” grant for $3300 to conduct a marketing strategy session (pending) • “Sports Development Program” grant for $6500 to promote croquet to young people (pending) Brian is fortunately not lost to the Governing Council, as he has accepted an appointed

Director’s position and has agreed to look after our on-going strategic planning, our stake holder’s relationships, sponsorship management, grant applications as well as risk management and compliance. Brian will be calling on members to assist him with these tasks.

Behind every good President there are many willing workers and volunteers and Brian would be the first to admit that all his achievements over the past years would not have been made possible if not for the tireless work of the Committees and our many volunteers.

But wait, there’s more. From the moment Brian walked into the club 31 years ago, he threw a mean dart. True to form, Brian became President of the Darts Club two years later, has held that position for most of the last 29 years and been instrumental in the Club’s success. In 2013 Brian was awarded Life Membership and it goes without saying that, based on his hard work and commitment to our Club in a wide variety of roles over many years, there has never been a more worthy recipient.

by Paul and Barry Bradshaw’s SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS, was held on 25 Saturday June. A bumper enrolment of 26 teams had registered; the best ever for a D4C event, including 38 “visitors” from other clubs.

Showery conditions in the morning looked like they would persist and spoil and possibly end the day early, but by the end of the first of the four 10-end matches, the sun broke through and a sunny but cool afternoon followed.

One of the more remarkable features of the day were the number of drawn matches. In all there were ten drawn matches in the day, with the Kevin Coffey team (with Phil Bilich, Spider Webb and Bob Jeffs) drawing their first three matches. Largely by dint of all the draws, only three teams had registered wins for both matches by lunch time.

A Soup-and-a Roll lunch was again generously provided by our wonderful ladies, with Anne, Shelley, Pauline, Jan, Sharon and Robyn providing a selection of five different and delicious soups. Thank you, ladies.

In the final analysis, 3 ½ wins was enough to carry the day, but there were 10 teams with 3 wins each who battled it out for the minor prizes.

Safeway Security Dash for Cash # 3 The third Dash for Cash was played on Saturday 30 July, and we finally struck some decent weather. A bumper field of 26 teams entered, and despite some early fixturing issues (sorry, folks), and some fixturing-on-the-run, all fours rounds were completed without too many more difficulties. Highlight of the event had to be the come from behind “win” by the rink of Alan Walton, Peter Balcombe, Dion Smith and Rick Munt who snatched a 4 on the last end to win by 1 shot, only to realise that it was a 10-end match and not an 11-end one. Their efforts were in vain and they lost that match by 1 shot.

Overall winners were the composite team of Joe Hofgesang, Tiger Hogan, Ken Giles and John Webb with four wins and a greater shots up margin than Brian Kiely, Brad Ball, Spider Webb and Chris Lander. Third were Neville Odell, John Sanders, Barry Stewart and Trevor Orton. John Dilley, 21

Jerome Clayton, Rob Thomas and Steve Smith were 4th. Lesser prizes were awarded to the best totals of the morning and the afternoon rounds, as well as for each individual round, and for the N.A.B.A. - who we won’t mention by name.

Safeway Security Dash for Cash # 4 Despite forecast of cold and rainy weather (again!) this event went ahead on Saturday 27 August. Safeway Security Screens again sponsored this event, as they have done for the past six years. 28 teams had nominated, but two teams pulled out on the day, leaving 26 to battle it out. The day remained mainly fine, but windy, and all four 10-end matches were completed with only minor weather interruptions. Thanks to the greens team for permitting this event to take place.

The unavailability of the kitchen due to renovations meant that instead of lunch, morning tea was provided. Thanks to all of the contributors and to Jan Cook, Wendy Saul and Fran Bracknell for their assistance in serving and cleaning up afterwards.

Club President John Abercrombie thanked the sponsors and caterers, and made special mention of, and welcomed the visiting bowlers. The growing popularity of this event saw 40 visiting bowlers take part. The club is looking forward to even bigger numbers in following years as word spreads. Barry Bradshaw also spoke of his appreciation to the club and organisers.

Overall winners on the day were the Quinns team of Rob Gray, Steve Newby, Chris Parr and Ian Parker – the only team to record all four wins.

Women’s Match Committee Report

A

s this is my first season as Chair of Women’s Match, for Sorrento Bowling Club, I’d like to introduce myself. I was born in South Africa and have been playing bowls for the last five years. I emigrated to Australia 18 months ago.

I would like to introduce the new Match Committee for this year. They are Carole Ford; Glen Larcombe; Judy Campbell; Nerrida Porteous (Vice) and Robyn Woodward.

Having stepped into Pauline Marsden’s shoes, it will be a challenge to match up to somebody with sheer dedication and I look forward to the up coming season. Many thanks to Pauline.

Nominated Open Pairs The Match Committee contacted the Sponsorship Committee to ask if a Sponsor could be found to support the winter Nominated Open Pairs. We were very grateful they approached Bowra Panel and Paint. As a result of a great promotion by Neville, 68 players took to the greens on Wednesday 29 June 2016 to play in the Nominated Open Pairs sponsored by Bowra Panel and Paint.

This was the first time the event had ever been sponsored and Bowra Panel and Paint did us proud. They provided prize money, a voucher for the raffle and drink bottles for all the players.

Mick Martin and Chris Grisbrook, cleaned up the top prize, winning with 18 points and two bonuses.

In second place with 18 points was that dynamic duo Moira Dean and Annie Taylor. Not far behind with 16 points and three bonuses were Stan and Robyn Van Mosseveld. In fourth place came Rick Munt and Izzy Davies with 16 points.

We would like to thank Bowra Panel and Paint for sponsoring the event. Please support them if you have an accident with your car. Umpires’ Corner New Umpires At the last Bowls WA training course in May this year, the following members achieved accreditation or re-accreditation as National Umpires (including accreditation as measurer and marker): – Ray Slimper, Jan Paniperis, Graeme Heard, Tony Friedlieb, Graeme O’Brien and yours truly. Congratulations to all for their efforts in achieving their accreditations.

Rule changes The following is a summary of those BWA rule changes for the 2016-2017 Season that are relevant to the game and that bowlers should be aware of:New Definition of a ‘Novice Bowler’ A player who has been an active member of an affiliated club in the Bowls Connect database for no more than two (2) years. Previously a Novice was defined as a first or second year capitated player.

Abandonment Delayed or Interrupted Pennant Games. (Extreme weather) - Delays before the start of the game and any subsequent delays during the game have been combined giving a minimum of sixty (60) minutes and a maximum of ninety (90) minutes of delays before a game is abandoned no matter when it starts or doesn’t start.

Protests In Pennants, if a side is considering a protest against an Umpire’s or Club official decision, they must make a decision and their Manager tick the appropriate box on the 25

Pennant Return Sheet before they leave the venue. Both managers are required to sign the Pennant Result sheets acknowledging the provisional result and that a protest against the result has been made. The Home club is to fax or e-mail the Pennant Result sheet to Bowls WA as soon as possible if a protest is lodged. The protesting club has until midday the following work day to submit the official protest in writing explaining the exact nature and circumstances of the protest and to deposit the $50 protest fee to Bowls WA .

T

he month of July was very successful on the social scene. The 40th anniversary Dinner- Dance featuring the Blues Brothers was a sell-out, this was followed by Christmas in July another sell-out and we were entertained by Les Meade who gave us Dean Martin sound alike and songs on request .

In August we had an evening with Wayne Pride who did a great job competing with the West Coast Eagles and GWS game on television a fun night was had by 80+ members, particularly as the Eagles won ,Wayne is booked again in September before he leaves for Nashville.

Thanks must go to you our members and friends who make the effort to support these functions, we are looking forward to holding a variety of evenings throughout the coming year and look forward to your continuing support.

Any successful party requires good food, lively company, a great music mix, entertainment and some of the liquid stuff, but when you add to this an amazing assortment of imaginative period attire a good time is guaranteed for all.

There was an abundance of flower power, Mods and Rockers, Bodgies and Widgies, Hippies galore, Carnaby Street tragics, gangster suited gents, flare revivalists, wig wearers who hid their age, gender and identity and a certain lady with a short, short dress who rarely left the dance floor and always enjoys these evenings (could that be? Yes it was her! ) The dance floor was rarely empty due to our fabulous DJ and his great music choice that provided that” blast from the past” that turned on most party goers. HOW I LOVED THIS ERA. Further entertainment was provided by Roy Orbison, Elmo, the rather rude puppet and the rocking Blues Brothers. All were great.

What a fabulous night! Well done the hard working few and you members for getting “in the groove”, “with it “ or “shaking it up baby” and “rocking around the clock”. It was a Hard Days Night!

Chase the Joker

C

hase the Joker (CTJ) continues to be an attraction complementing the Friday meals night and the meat raffles at SBC. The revised format for CTJ has seen the Jackpot starting at a very healthy $1500 building by $100 per week and stopping at $5000 after 35 weeks if the Joker has not drawn before this target. The previous winner(s) Keith and Marg Cooper collected a cool $3000 in September 2015.

The most recent Jackpot stayed at $5000 for seven weeks. Then on 5 August (week 41) one of the regular syndicates sent Dave Cook up to the cabinet. Dave turned and showed 29

the Joker to a roaring cheer from the large crowd of members and friends. Congratulations to the worthy winners and thank you to all the CTJ supporters. Congratulations, boys!

Interest in CTJ had reached new highs with 100+ stars being sold each week as the jackpot neared $5000. Over this period, 2nd chance draws were introduced and more than 100 2nd chance prizes were given out to members. With continued support of CTJ we hope to be able to continue this practice.

Kevin Coffey has run the CTJ for a number of years and has worked with Governing Council members to introduce the ‘new ‘ format which is proving very popular. Kevin has assembled a team to support him with the running of CTJ as at times it gets very hectic with members scrambling to get their ‘favourite numbers’. Kevin would like to acknowledge the following people for their help and support: Judy Campbell, Bob, Susta, Bisho and Elisabeth, Glen and Trish, as well as ‘Mr. Raffles’ (Brian Self) and Ian Lucas who has set up the number drawing system on the TV screens throughout the club and operates the system at draw time.

Thanks to all these people who volunteer their Friday night time to make CTJ such a success. All volunteers across all areas of the club are essential to keeping costs down and making our club the best in the state.

CTJ is a fund raiser for our club and gives participants the opportunity to win a very worthwhile sum of ‘tax free’ cash. The CJT ‘Rules of Operation’ are posted on the wall near the display cabinet for all to see. Come down and support the CJT and the club and have some fun and a few laughs while you are at it.

Greens and Grounds

T

hanks to our green keeper, Alan McFayden and his assistant Ron Kuziela, the greens have been running superbly throughout the winter. All bowlers have to realise that this takes a lot of work by both Alan and Ron and some of our volunteers to keep the greens to this high standard. Greens are rotated to play on in a certain order each week to try and keep them all to the same standard so please try and understand this and not complain because you think a different green would be better to play on.

When rolling up at any time, please remember to bowl on the pegs as this evenly distributes the wear and tear of the green. Also look at the board at the entrance to the clubhouse to see which greens are open and which are closed. Only the green keeper decides which greens will be played on, nobody else.

The gardens and lawn are also looking great thanks to the regular volunteers who put in their valuable time and effort each week.

Several things are on the go at the moment, i.e., a new shed to replace the three, small sheds; a new pesticide sprayer to complement the current one being used; a secondhand/new trailer is being sort (let me know if you know of one for sale) to transport our equipment when repairs are needed; the rink number bins are being modified so that they do not move if accidentally kicked (this is Bowls WA directive) and an automatic greens sprinkler system is being looked into.

Enjoy the greens, look after them and we will all have a great summer of bowls.

The Bowlering Language – How to Translate

T

he “Sport of Bowls” has its very own language which can totally mystify anyone who hears it, but hasn’t had the pleasure of throwing a bowl in fun or earnest. For the information of the uninitiated, here are a few terms translated into Standard English.

• “Good weight!” = lousy line • “Good line” = lousy weight • “Good back bowl” = you were lucky you didn’t put it in the ditch • “That’s in their way” = that’s in my way • “That could be useful up there” = that bowl is closer to you than it is to the jack • “Get it next time” = you sure didn’t get it this time • “He’s surprisingly good” = you’re surprised he ever makes a shot • “That’s an awesome bowl” = about time you got one close.

• “I’d bowl with him any day” = he always buys the first round – Gavan Ebsworth “MY SKIPPER.!!”

My Skipper is very courageous, But says things at times - quite outrageous, Last week he did cry As my bowls whistled by, “The Kitty’s not sick or contagious!”.

Croquet Corner News A Tribute to Life Member Geoff Bloomfield Geoff died peacefully, aged 95, on 29 August 2016 but he is well-remembered for his many fine qualities, including humour, enthusiasm, leadership, motivation and playing skills.

Geoff was the driving force behind the formation of the Sorrento Croquet Club (SCC), which opened in 1997 with him as Captain – a position he held for over 10 years. This, together with his enthusiastic activities within the Club and his sport, resulted in our courts being named in his honour.

Geoff was a State Coach and State Referee and represented the SCC at our Club’s Executive meetings and at those of the WA Croquet Association, for many years. Geoff was accepted as a Life Member of Sorrento Bowling Club in 2009. Sadly, in 2011, he suffered a serious stroke and was no longer able to play. His absence was sorely missed! He was honoured 32

with a “Croquetwest Service Award” in October, 2012.

Geoff’s other interests, which he shared with Club members and the Community, included his love for Australian poetry and music – he was a keen member of the SorrentoDuncraig Choir of “Sing Australia”. Those members who knew Geoff as a leader and mentor in the Club now remember him with deep and fond admiration and respect.

Vale, Geoff – you set a standard and example to which we can all aspire – our sincere gratitude and sympathies are extended to your family.

Other news from the Croquet Corner “Gosnell’s 12” Competition This annual competition was held over the weekend of 11 and 12 June with Sorrento ladies – Trish Klemp, Di McGivern, Kerry Bomford, Thora Lay, Judith Skeet and Pat Hobson - making up 50% of the entries!! All six players finished in the ‘B’ Group for the final day, with Di and Trish being runners-up of the section. Apart from the very early morning starts and the long drives on each day, the competition was enjoyed by all.

An extract from Stan Patmor whose name has been placed in the Hall of Fame in Arizona for his achievements as a croquet player: This is not the back yard croquet you played as a kid but rather a game that requires the strategy of chess, the hand/eye co-ordination of golf and the nerves of billiards!

“Daft Doubles” Competition Hosted by Cambridge Croquet Club on 26th June, this competition is a serious competition with a twist – daft clothing is encouraged! Judith Skeet and Pat Hobson made up one Sorrento team with Kerry Bomford and Di McGivern making up the other. In this competition all Sorrento players qualified for the top Group for the final day. Unfortunately neither of our teams were placed in the top two spots, but Kerry and Di won a prize for their “crazy” hats – thanks to Kerry’s “wardrobe” of hats to select from!!

Sorrento Bowling Club’s 40th Anniversary and AGM The celebratory dinner held on Friday 1 July was a resounding success and was well supported by croquet members who enjoyed the entire evening with good food, good music and loads of good fun! Our sincere thanks to the organising committee and our caterers for all their hard work!

The AGM, held on Sunday 3 July, was also well attended by croquet members.

Congratulations to Brian Lucas and all the out-going Committees and Sub-Committees for their outstanding work during the past year; and best wishes to incoming President 33

Congratulations to David Ward David was recently welcomed as a member of Sorrento Croquet Club and, as such, represented us at the “Champion of Champions” Association Croquet Competition held at Nedlands Croquet Club on 30 and 31 July - achieving third place overall. David also represented Sorrento at the Annual Geraldton Golf and Association Croquet Tournament where he was placed second in the Golf Handicap Doubles, third in the Association Handicap Singles, and was winner of his Block in the Golf Singles – Congratulations, David!

Golf Croquet Referees’ Accreditation Croquetwest arranged for the Australian National Referee, Mr. Jim Clement, to visit Perth for four days from 9 – 11 July to hold two instructional sessions for players in WA who were selected to try to qualify to become accredited referees; and a further two sessions for players who were interested in learning more about the proper interpretation of the Rules of Golf Croquet. To become an accredited Golf Croquet Referee, candidates were required to: 1. Achieve at least 90%, in a written examination of 60 questions based on: • The Rules of Golf Croquet - November 2013, Adopted ACA 1 January, 2014.

• Official Rulings on the 2013 edition of the Rules of Golf Croquet – 2016 • The Golf Croquet Refereeing Manual - April 2015 • The ACA Refereeing Regulations – October 2015 2. Pass an online general sports officiating test from the Australian Sports Commission.

3. Attend the Sunday lecture course.

4. Pass a further written test on Monday morning.

5. Be examined, and pass, an “on court” refereeing test on Monday Di McGivern was one of ten WA players to become a newly-accredited referee; and Judith Skeet successfully attended a “Rules Workshop”.

City of Joondalup Sports Development Grants Meeting The City of Joondalup is very active in supporting sports clubs located within their city through a series of Annual Grants. A meeting to provide Guidelines for applications for Grants by sports clubs was held on 13 July and was attended by Kerry Bomford and Di McGivern, on behalf of the Croquet Club; and John Abercrombie, on behalf of the Bowling Club. An on-going goal of the Croquet section is to encourage younger people to take up the sport. Di and Kerry will work with John Abercrombie and Brian Lucas to submit an application in an effort to win some funding to meet this goal. Members will be informed if this bid for funding is successful.

State Coaches Invitational Competition Di McGivern was invited to participate in this one-day competition hosted by Nedland’s Croquet Club on Saturday 16 July; and despite the rainy weather on the day, the competition was completed with Di being placed 5th in a field of eight.

York Competition

The six “stalwart” Sorrento ladies – the same ones that entered the Gosnell’s competition (see above) – travelled to York on Friday 19 August to enter this competition, which was dominated by the WA State players using it as a practice tournament for the pending National Competitions.

While our members entered knowing that they could not win or be placed, they wanted to gain the experience of playing against much stronger players to learn new techniques and strategies – as well as having a good time!! On Day 1 three of the six teams in each Block comprised very strong players; resulting in our three teams being placed in the lower Block (as expected) on Day 2. We are pleased to report that Di and Trish finished as runners-up in this Block! A number of players commented on the level of support shown by Sorrento Club at Country events such as this one.

National Championships – 31 August to 11 September 2016 Some of the Men’s Interstate matches will be played at Sorrento Croquet Club on Tuesday 6 September. Di McGivern and Kerry Bomford have attended a number of meetings at Croquetwest in preparation for this major event. Details of all the matches and results can be found on the Croquetwest Website. Derry Ellis says Claire is doing well after her ordeal.

Pat Sweeny is now 92 and is travelling slowly but is doing OK. Mike Thornett says Val is OK and is managing to stay positive.

On behalf of all club members I wish you all a quick and good recovery.

Now the very sad part of my report, “Member’s Deaths”. Ken Vercoe passed away on 19 August 2016. Ken was very positive the last time I spoke to him and I was quite shocked when I was advised of his death. On behalf of all members I posted a sympathy card to Denise.

Another great loss was the passing of Gordon Kirkham on 23 August from emphysema.

Gordon’s funeral was held at Pinnaroo on 30 August. Although not many of our new members would have known Gordon a lot of longer term members knew him. On behalf of all members I sent a sympathy card to Jenni Kirkham.

Lastly I received an e-mail from Pauline saying that Geoff Bloomfield passed away on 30 August. Geoff was the Inaugural President of the Sorrento Croquet Club.

On behalf of all club members I passed on our deepest condolences to all families of the deceased.

Vale Ken Vercoe 1940-2016

K

en Vercoe was a bloke who made an impression no matter what task lay ahead.

Whether at work or at play Ken gave it everything and by virtue of his fairness he made a hell of a lot of friends along the way.

Born in Brisbane in 1940, the second of three children, Ken was taken by his parents to Adelaide at a very young age.

Years later he met Denise on a blind date in Brisbane when on a business trip and the pair were married in the Queensland capital in 1981.

While in Brisbane Ken worked with the Sunny Queen Eggs Marketing Board and Décor.

Previously he served as State Sales Manager for Nestle in Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney. During his lengthy stint in the South Australian capital he became good friends with former Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell when the pair worked at Nestle and played baseball together. Ken quickly earned the respect of Chappell, who always called him “Vercs”.

Denise and Ken moved to Perth in January 2010 with Ken never having played bowls.

His passion had been golf, which took him all the way to being President of the prestigious Pacific Golf Club in Brisbane while playing off a handicap of 12. On arriving in Perth, Ken quickly sold his golf clubs and announced he was joining Sorrento. But in typical Ken fashion, he wasn’t interested in just the bowling side of things It didn’t take Ken long to let it be known he would like to join “The Thumbs Up Club”. Members of that highly regarded, but low key, group meet each Monday morning to assist the green keepers with any sort of work that is required, including looking after the Club’s copious gardens. In a very short time Ken was making lots of useful suggestions on what should be done to the various garden beds. Accordingly, he was asked to take over the gardening section and he did that with such gusto that improvements were quickly noticeable.

But Ken didn’t limit his gardening time to Mondays. If he felt a weed or two needed pulling or something watered he would go down to the club and fix the problem.

On the bowling green, Ken was just as attentive. A couple of seasons ago he figured in one of the greatest upsets in the Club’s history. Resolute skipper John Sturk, his sights set high, put together triples and fours teams someone branded as 1000-1 shots to win the Club championships. But Sturkie, along with Pat Dichiera and Alan Wood managed to do just that in the triples. Jaffa then sought out Ken Vercoe as his lead, Bill Long as his second and Alan Wood, again as his third. The Club’s honour board will record for ever and a day in gold type the winners of that David v Goliath contest.

As recently as last summer Ken again played a big role in Saturday’s Division 4 Blue grand final against Wanneroo at Joondalup. Going into the last game of the season as the afternoon underdogs, Sorrento lost three of their four games, albeit narrowly. But Ken, playing in Skipper Merv Spence’s team helped Sorrento to an aggregate win, and promotion, by virtue of a 15-shot victory. Soon afterwards Ken travelled to Dunsborough to play in one of Ray Green’s two teams in a big Trevors Carpets’ sponsored tournament.

Not long after Ken indicated to The Thumbs Up Club that he was starting to feel the pinch and would have to quit his gardening duties. At the age of 76 it was felt he could be excused from his voluntary work to concentrate on his beloved bowls.

Unfortunately Ken deteriorated and we lost a very valuable member of our group and a great person. Our deepest sympathies go out to Denise, Zoe, Helen and Susan on the loss of your husband and father.

Tips on Positional Play in the Game of Bowls

I

t cannot be stressed enough that the different positions played in a game of lawn bowls have unique responsibilities. The way players carry out these duties will invariably determine the overall performance of the team. It is hoped that this information will be useful to our bowlers, especially Pennant players during the forth coming Pennant season.

THE LEAD The art of lead bowls is to be able to throw the Jack to a length required by the skip, then get two bowls in the head, preferably in the “keyhole”. The keyhole is described as an area 15cms either side of the Jack opening up to a circle approx. 1 metre behind the Jack.

Use the “roll-up” to find the truest hand and discuss this with the Skip.

To sum up: 38To have a good start it is not essential to have the shot every end. Positional

bowls and bowls in the head are equally as important. REMEMBER: If the lead plays a bad hand, usually the rest of the team follows, often with bad results.

THE SECOND The Second position should be regarded as the “engine room” of the team. The Second should consolidate the head and must be a player with all the skills. The Second must be able to: • Draw on either hand • Play positional bowls • Have a firm shot to open up the head To sum up: A good Second should be a “Jack of all trades” to cover all situations that may arise from time to time.

THE THIRD The ideal Third must be a strong bowler who can encourage team performance, be diplomatic, is loyal to his Skip and has to be capable of the full variety of shots: The Third must be able to:

Dead draw on both hands Play a yard on shot Play a firm shot Drive Play a positional bowl

He must accept directions without question. He must be a good judge of a shot, as the Skip will rely on him from time to time to give an accurate assessment of the head. If unsure, call the Skip to the head if you are in doubt. The Third needs to be a capable measurer and be aware of the laws of the game covering this area.

The Third should stand back when the Skip is playing, don’t move or say anything UNLESS ASKED The Third’s primary job is to be in full harmony with the Skip, helping to take the pressure off the Skip.

To sum up: A good Third should be a skilful bowler providing constant attention, loyalty, patience and offer a fair amount of psychological strength to his team mates and Skip.

THE SKIP The Skip should be a competent bowler, playing every shot in the book and some that haven’t been contemplated yet.

The Skip must be able to: 39

• Be in complete control of the rink and the team at all times Withstand pressure Motivate his team Communicate with the team Analyse and plan the head Select the best shot for each bowl delivered

Did you know • that you must always • do what the Skipper tells • you to do? A happy Skip • means a happy team.

• Remember also: “A happy wife means a A Skip must know his players and call shots within happy life” their capability, as well as demonstrate tactical skill taking advantage of opposition weaknesses.

To sum up: A good Skip is a skilful bowler who can manage the Head and work with the Team and use their abilities to the best advantage with the intention of winning the game.

Some comments from an ex member I visited the Club today and was pleased to see the progress that has been made in the last 40 years and wish to pass on my congratulations. I was a 25 year old when the Club started and it was very unusual in those days for someone to be so young playing what was then regarded as an old persons sport.

Peter Wood was my original Pennant Skipper and I can still remember our four winning by 39 shots and earning us the pots and then to be dropped as leader the next week. I can also remember the support I received when I was playing in the inaugural Novice Singles final. I was down 11/1 in the first to 21 final and with encouragement won 21/11.

I now play for South Burnie in North West Tasmania and we would welcome any Sorrento members visiting the Apple Isle to visit our Club. There is social bowls on Wednesday afternoon during summer and on Saturdays in winter.

God’s Plan for Ageing

M

ost seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach and stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good.

So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it’s God’s will.

It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.

Coaching Today Compared to 40 years Ago

O

ne of the major differences today by comparison, is we do have coaches. At Sorrento 40 years ago, as Graeme Herd recalls, there were none. People picked up the game from the more experienced members who were prepared to spend time with them. Most bowling knowledge was derived from books written by some of this country’s more prominent players.

In 1986 the first official coaching manual was produced by the Australian Bowls Council.

This manual became the bible for the correct delivery. It recommended a five step delivery action and became the way everyone was coached.

To obtain accreditation for coaching it was essential to know the sequences, the stances, the grips and various other bowls related questions.

As a coach one would correct a player if they were seen to stray too far away from what could be called the correct or orthodox style.

When the Jack Hi programme began televising the various bowls tournaments with our Australian and international stars competing, it became evident these world class players all had their own individual styles of delivery. Not many if any had deliveries similar to the type we were coaching.

I’m not sure if this fact became the catalyst for change, but it became apparent a new approach to coaching was necessary. Today the coaching methodology is based on a 43

constants and variables principle. The constants being the essentials the variables are where people add their own components to the delivery.

The accreditation course has also changed appreciatively. Coaches are now trained in risk management and player welfare, along with skill development, bowling technique and people skills. In all respects the coaching accreditation course has moved into the 21st century.

Tribute to Lionel Northover 1927-2016

T

he Sorrento Bowling Club lost one of its memorable and long-serving members with the sad passing of Lionel Northover on 23 June, 2016. Lionel’s eighty-eight years included 15 years with the Club. He was a keen bowler and active member .

He is remembered for his outstanding intellect and memory, his fastidious attention to detail and preparation (no matter how late he was), and his dry sense of humour which included the following description when his son Peter was born “Consignment 6lb arrived on schedule, spout intact. All well”.

Lionel lived a very full and colourful life that included being compelled by his mother to learn tap dancing, singing and elocution that saw him on stage with The Ladbrooke’s Studios of Stage and Operatic Dancing.

Lionel’s career started as an office boy and developed into an illustrious newspaper career as a journalist spanning 45 years. He worked with The Mirror, Sydney Sun-Herald, Weekend Mail, Indonesian Observer (an English language newspaper based in Jakarta) and 31 years with the Daily News. He received letters of praise from people including the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Australia and the Indonesian Ambassador.

He occupied the positions of chief sub editor; Sports Editor, news editor, features editor, check-sub editor, editorial writer and even, at one time, stand-in cadet counsellor.

Over his career Lionel worked alongside some pretty high profile people including cricketer Bob Simpson and footballer Hayden Bunton junior. At one time he addressed a group of junior reporters that included Mike Willessee and handled copy from a young reporter named John Cornell (Paul Hogan’s offsider, Strop).

Our heartfelt condolences go to Margaret Clarke, Lionel’s partner of 33 years and longterm member of the Club and the family.

Collins Struggles with Steep Hill

B

rian Collins’ team of Wayne Gray, Vi Willers and Judy Etheridge were buoyed by their narrow three shot victory over Roland Hill’s side of Brian Lucas, Kath Harris and Jan Paniperis, competing in the Exmouth mixed fours competition held in July.

Judy is a lifelong friend of Jan and plays at Mount Lawley.

It wasn’t enough however to head them on the leaders’ board at the end of the two day, six game tournament, finishing four places behind. Both teams won three games but Roland’s side had far more shots up.

Both teams were trumped by Maureen Beard’s side of husband Ray (both great former members of Sorrento before moving to Safety Bay) and Frank and Beryl Tutt. They finished 3 places higher, with 4 wins.

Ian Wittber was a keen observer during the tournament and has been trying out his mechanical bowling arm during his holiday. As was Barbara Hill who had to sit out due to doggie-sitting duties for Portia whilst Roland played bowls.

It was a very enjoyable and well run event with players enjoying the warmth of 26 degrees while Perth shivered. Seventy-six ends in two days challenged the stamina of all players in this highly recommended event.

Darts Report

O

ur winter Darts season is drawing to the end and I am very happy to advise the Club has had another successful year with two sides making the finals of the Sports and Bowling Club Darts Association competition.

In the Blue Water Association, A and B division are possible finalists, subject to the results of the last night of the season ..

Brent Marshall (SBC) and Jeb Woodcock (MACC) won the 45

Blue Water Association handicap pairs.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks Brian Lucas for his efforts over many years in supporting the Darts Club. Brian joined the Darts club in 1985 and became President in 1987, a position he held for most of the last 29 years except for a short period whilst he was working away and recently when he became the Bowling Club President. Brian has been instrumental in the ongoing success of our Club.

The Australian Bowls Carnival

F

or the first time I entered the Australian Bowls Carnival held on the Gold Coast in June. Along with several other Sorrento Members and one from Valley a very enjoyable tournament both on and off the greens.

Jan Cook , Liz Marshall were one of two teams from Sorrento to make the last sixteen teams in the Over 60’s Pairs along with Pauline Bourne and Nerrida Porteous.

Jan and Liz then teamed up with two ladies from Chincilla (QLD) and performed extremely well in the open fours.

Kevin Cook and I teamed up, in the Over 60’s Pairs and ran into a very good pair in the first game at Coolangatta. Our Fours team of Kevin, Tony Bourne, Ross Porteous and myself came off the green after our first game at Helensvalle a little shell-shocked after coming up against a Drakes Pride team whose lead went on to win the Junior singles, their Skip a QLD singles champ and Steve Glasson’s son Ben as Third. Their Second was a bit OK as well.

Kevin Cook performed well in his Open Singles. Ironically I played my first game against a young lad who played at Sorrento in The Australian U18’s. I started well but that was it. Overall a very enjoyable experience and thoroughly recommended.

n vast contrast to our noble, peaceful, quiet and wonderful world of lawn bowls, darts and croquet let us compare the World of the brothers “Oldfield” currently champions in the “sport” of speedway racing. The three brothers Jason, Jamie and Warren race in most tracks across WA as well as Darwin and a few in America.

They have progressed from Mini’s to huge thumping 700+ horsepower Chevies and Corvettes accumulating hundreds of trophies. Their sport can only be described as extremely dangerous, very fast, absolutely noisy and heart thumping.

Some Worldly Advice about Stress

A

young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question: ‘Half empty or half full?’ She fooled them all. “How heavy is this glass of water?” She inquired with a smile.

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied: “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem.

If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued: “And that’s the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.”

“As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden – holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Pick them up again tomorrow if you must.

Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon and some days you’re the statue.

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Be Thankful!

s this a picture of the lawn at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace or a normal lawn in the UK? Actually it is none of these. It is the playing surface of the Andover Lawn Bowling Club in Hampshire England. When I asked “what speed do you reckon it is?” I got the responses “Not sure, but it is in good condition at the moment and running a lot faster than a few weeks ago”; “Possibly as fast as 11 seconds”.

Well I timed it and the fastest I could come up with was about 10 seconds and this is in the middle of summer. So next time members complain about the slow greens which are only running about 12-13 seconds, just be thankful for what we have at Sorrento.

Now We’re Cooking with Gas

T

he Club’s antiquated and aging kitchen has been re-invigorated with a $60 000 refurbishment. The project was funded from Club revenues but also with the support of a Commonwealth “Stronger Communities” grant of $13 200. This Phase 1 project incorporated the installation of a large air extraction unit, new sinks and benches and new equipment including a commercial stove and fryers.

Phases 2 and 3 of the kitchen expansion project, incorporating a commercial cool room and wash up areas, will commence in 2018/19 following the completion of the Western club house extension to be undertaken by the City of Joondalup.

Ross and Trish Cunningham were ecstatic when they saw the new kitchen for the first time – a real wow effect. A huge thank you goes to Wayne Gray for the countless hours that he put in to making sure that this project was a resounding success.

Tribute to Gordon Kirkham 1940-2016

O

ur friend Gordon and dearly loved husband of Jenni, father of Gail and Sarah, father-in-law of Brian, grandfather of Phoebe and Dylan quietly slipped away on 23 August 2016, aged 76.

Gordon came to Australia as a ‘Ten Pound Pom”. He worked at WA Transformers as a transformer winder. He joined the Sorrento Bowling Club in April 1990. He played Pennants both Thursday and Saturday. I remember him being my Skipper with Ken Vercoe as our lead.

The photo below was taken when 4 Gold 1 beat 4 Gold 2 for promotion in the play-off’s. You will spot Gordon in the third row from the back on the extreme right Gordon also always enjoyed his Friday afternoon social bowls.

Those of you who knew Joe Stow will remember that he loved giving people nick names and Gordon was always known as “Flash” after Flash Gordon a sci-fi hero from the 1930’s.

Gordon was one of our volunteers and together with his wife Jenni produced our Club newsletter for a number of years. Gordon was always prepared to help in the kitchen and with numerous sausage sizzles for events such as Community Bowls. Pictured alongside are Dell Cornwell, Stan McCullagh , “Flash” Gordon and Joan Whitham.

Barbara Spence remembers him as the perfect gentleman. Thank you Flash You will be remembered by all your friends.
