in the latest Club Fixture Booklet. We are both getting a bit old and doddery! We had Jan Cook as “Jan Cooke” and managed to fix this before it went to the printer but missed the missing “t”.

Some more “Did you hear/know” Did you know that Barry Bradshaw’s company Safeway Security Screens has been sponsoring the annual Dash for Cash competition for nine years? It all began way back when Ian Marshall was President and Barry Bradshaw was Treasurer. The Lathlain Carlisle Bowling Club had discontinued their popular Dash for Cash event and Barry kindly agreed to sponsor a Dash for Cash at Sorrento. Thank you Barry!

Did you know that we have a member in our club who travels from Mandurah to play bowls for the best club in the metro area – such dedication? With a name like Rhett Butler – “Frankly My Dear I Don’t Give a Dam” Did you hear that at our September Opening Day Emily Dunn was practising her pole dancing? She was spotted swinging around the pole on the edge of the green.

Did you know our friends, Jan and Clive Webber, have returned to our shores for their annual visit.

Our congratulations to Clive who celebrated his 80th birthday on 19 September. May you have a great year, Clive, and we wish you both a happy stay in WA! Did you know that Trevor actually volunteered to take his wife Anne to see “Downton Abbey – The Movie”? He tells me he was one of four men in the audience!

Did you hear that Frank Tyson invited Murray Hulbert to play with him at Cambridge on a Thursday in August? When Frank went into to pay for the game he was advised that he had not entered. Because Frank and Murray had gone there in Bruce Eagles car they had to play each other all afternoon. Warren Elliott tells us no one knows who won!!

Did you hear that Ken Giles got three touchers on one end? We were all a bit surprised but apparently it happens quite often!

Did you know that Peter Davies (pictured alongside) celebrated his 90th birthday in August 2019? We hope that, when we are his age, we will be able to play as well as Peter does with his orange bowls.

Peter has been a member of our Club for more than 18 years.

Did you hear that Tony Friedlieb was shocked when he overheard Pauline Marsden admitting to ABBA that she might have been wrong about an issue? He reckons this is a “first”!

Did you know that “true love only comes once in a lifetime, so when you find it, don’t let it go”?. These are words Harry and Dorothy Clewett live by. This Sunshine Coast couple were married 75 years ago in 1944. Dorothy, now 93, and Harry, 99, have four children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Did you know that Pat Dichiera once considered himself to be a very good chess player? He then decided to teach his young children how to play the game. He was such a good teacher that he stopped challenging them for a game when they consistently beat him. Now he has taken it up again teaching the grandchildren. This comeback will be short lived as soon as they also start beating him. He tells us that his love 8

of lawn bowls comes from his comparison of lawn bowls to chess: “Chess is move and counter move. Lawn bowls is bowl and counter bowl”.

Did you know that the inaugural World Bowls Challenge will hit Australian shores from 29 November? “Team World” has unveiled its star-studded line-up to take on the Australian Jackaroos in a composite, ten-a-side format at Moama Bowling Club. Games will be televised on Foxtel. Team World will be Alex Marshall MBE (Scotland), Darren Burnett (Scotland), Shannon McIlroy (New Zealand), Ryan Bester (Canada), Gary Kelly (Ireland), Jo Edwards MNZM (New Zealand), Colleen Piketh (South Africa), Kelly McKerihen (Canada), Ellen Falkner (England), Katherine Rednall (England). The Australian team will be Kelsey Cottrell, Ellen Ryan, Karen Murphy, Natasha Scott, Rebecca Van Asch, Barrie Lester, Aaron Sherriff, Aaron Teys, Corey Wedlock and Aaron Wilson.

Did you know that in 1844 King George asked his boot-maker to make him a pair of boots? This changed the way boots and shoes were made foreever. What did he do? Peter McIntosh tells us that this was the first time shoes were made for a specific foot! Thank you Peter for this useful bit of information.

Did you hear that Pat Dichiera won the $5000 Member’s Draw in October?

He was assisted by Angelina, his five year old granddaughter, who helped him pick the right card. She had assured him that her selection would be the correct card.

Did you hear about a State bowler (who shall remain nameless) who left his bowls bag at our Club and took home someone else’s bag? In 9

order to try and identify the culprit, the mystery bag was opened to see if the owner could be identified from the contents. The bag was “allegedly” found to contain a hair brush, a small bottle of Jameson whiskey in a Great Northern stubby holder, a spare stubby holder, a kitchen cloth, some Panadol and a medal for a team that had won a triples event at Joondalup.

After some detective work it was established that, as one of these three bowlers had been playing at Sorrento that day, they were able to track the culprit down and exchange bowls bags. “All’s well that ends well.”

Did you know that new member, Sandy Everest, has a horse race, a car, a movie, a mountain and a bowls competition named after her?

She even has “Everest” embossed on her bowls! Sandy and her team of Wendy Saul, Carmel Hyde and Kerry Hutchinson won a “Fifty Badge” when they beat a Bedford team 50-8. Well done all.

President’s Report

embers will be thrilled to hear that, at a Bowls Australia event held on the Gold Coast at the end of October, Sorrento was named as the second-best bowling club in Australia. This is a great achievement as there are more than 2000 bowling clubs in Australia.

The other finalist, the Suburban Bowling Club in Townsville (QLD), was declared as the winner of the 2019 Bowls Australia Bowling Club of the Year. Congratulations to them for all their efforts in winning this award. Sorrento on the other hand should not feel that it has not succeeded. Our past achievements certainly was a big reason in making the final two.

The Sorrento Bowling Club has achieved so much over the past few years winning Bowls WA’s Club of the Year in 2012, 2016,2018, 2019 and Clubs WA’s Club of the Year 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and becoming the first club of any type to be inaugurated into Clubs WA’s Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to all the members and volunteers who have made Sorrento the great club that it is and will continue to be. We have been formally recognised as one of the truly great bowling clubs in Australia.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and their families a Merry Christmas and a great and prosperous 2020. Our thoughts go out to our members who have lost a loved one in 2019.

eautiful Spring weather, sumptuous lunch, record number of attendees, good greens, competitive games. What could go wrong?

And nothing did and what a great day it was. The morning began with fun and fellowship over a delicious morning tea provided by some wonderful volunteer ladies. Thank to Robyn Rowe for organising this.

President John Abercrombie opened proceedings by welcoming the dignitaries and life members. Mayor Albert Jacob was invited to cut the ribbon signifying the official opening of the Western end extension.

Norman swung the first croquet mallet to open the Croquet season.

Lee Leach, Trevor Orton and Jan Cook had spent some time on the previous Thursday working out the teams. After the inevitable last minute changes, Lee produced the colour coded cards for the two teams which were led by the Women’s Captain, Nerrida Porteous, and by the Men’s Captain, John Godfrey, competing for the annual Des Bennett Memorial Trophy.

A tremendous roll-up of 104 bowlers took to the greens, with each team composed of a mixture of men and women. The weather was fine and sunny, but a cool breeze reminded us it was early Spring. The three greens ran at a good pace of around 14 seconds.

In a closely contested series of two 11-end matches, the men recorded 12 wins and three draws, with the women narrowly behind with 11 wins and three draws, so the final result came down to a couple of winning margins. After all of the cards had been located and tallied the “Men’s” team emerged victorious by 17 shots. This was the men’s team’s first win for four years.

Biggest rink winners for the Women’s team were Barbara Lorencs, Paul Kain, Neil McLaughlan and Sylvia McLaughlan (+13 shots) and for the men John Sturk, Cheryl Benn, Derek Lay and Larry Perry were the best (+17 shots) Thanks to all of the day’s organisers, particularly Pauline Marsden, Jan Cook, Lee Leach, Nerrida Porteous, Trevor and Anne Orton and John Godfrey for their efforts. Thanks also to the morning tea providers, and Ross and Trish Cunningham and their team for the delicious hearty lunch.

Snippets from VP Sport and Participation Pennants Congratulations to both Warren Elliott and Jan Cook and their committees on the very good start to the season. Our Men are fielding 124 players on Saturday and 108 on Thursday which is the biggest for any club in the competition. Our Ladies are still fielding four teams on Tuesday but have increased our participation to three teams on Saturday. Members would be aware of the goals of both groups for the season which is in the Club’s Fixture Book. Also, thanks to Trevor Orton who has again produced detailed fixtures for our teams.

Club Championship Events I would encourage all full members to enter as many events as they can as your involvement can not only benefit each individual member’s game but also provide an opportunity to meet other members. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Trevor and Lee Leach and their respective committees for their professionalism in running the events and their endeavours to maximise the number of entries.

Bowls Development Co-Ordinator Congratulations to John Goddard on his efforts so far this season. His knowledge, people skills and professionalism have been apparent and appreciated. His emphasis on regular and beneficial practice has been endorsed and acted on by our members.

Get Involved Our Club provides our members with opportunities to play bowls six days a week whether it be a roll up, social, Pennants or Club Championship events so please get involved.

Another Successful Scroungers Season This seasons Scroungers proved to be the most successful by far. A total of 76 individual players tried their hand in at least one game over the 14 weeks. The stand-out was a gentlemen from Victoria who rang the Club at 10am and advised he was at the Perth airport and could he get a game, having seen it on the Sorrento Club website. Not only did he make the 10.30 am start time but he defeated former Club Singles champion Ross Cunningham in the process. The other stand-out (for me) was Andrew De Cinque walking in Sunday morning and asking if he could have a roll up. I convinced him to try a game of scroungers to which he became a regular and has now joined our Club to play Pennants.

We had players ranging from complete novices to Club champions having a game and enjoying themselves.

The person I would like to thank foremost is my wife Michelle for firstly nagging me to run it again and then supporting the concept all season. Michelle also provided embroidered caps and beanies for the winners and helpers like Ron Taylor pictured alongside. I would also thank Alan “Dreads� Walton, Glenn and Trish McCarthy, Judy Campbell, Robin Rowe, Charmain Harris and Ron Taylor for their support. In fact, Scroungers turned into its own family with many regular players volunteering and providing the after-game eats for all those participating.

(three wins) and Peter Balcombe (two wins). Jan Paniperis was the only lady to win the event this season giving her bragging rights.

Dreads was too good in the final and was a deserved winner.

Joondalup Bowling Club was host to this year’s “Queen of Scroungers” on Friday 20 September. 34 ladies represented 15 clubs from as far as Bylong (NSW), Forrestfield and Bullcreek. Sorrento was represented by Jan Paniperis, Charmain Harris, Jan Siney and Wendy Flack. Jan Siney and Wendy both lost their first game on the final end, Charmain winning hers by one point and Jan Paniperis through comfortably.

Charmain was knocked out in her semi-final but Jan Paniperis came home with a six on the last end to win her semi by one point.

The final was full of controversy with another bowler playing out of turn, but Jan handled it with great aplomb, finishing second overall.

I would also acknowledge and thank the Governing Council of the Club for supporting us with a $50 drink voucher for the winner each week.

Men’s Match Committee Report Dash for Cash #4

The final Dash for Cash for 2019, once again sponsored by SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS, was held at the end of August. With this day being

the last day of winter and after a couple of bleak days, the weather prognosis was not good. But it transpired that it was a cool and breezy 21

day where sunshine prevailed, and all four matches of 11 ends were completed without interruption.

After the morning rounds, five teams had racked up two wins, and as all of these teams were scheduled to play each other in the afternoon, only two teams could emerge as four-match winners.

In fact the last game of the day to finish was the one that decided the overall victor, with the visiting (mostly) Bedford team of John Carlsen, Ian Watson, Bruce Fullagar and Mate Dragicevich defeating Peter Flack, Brian Saul, Andy Elmer and Steve Fewster by 2 shots to emerge overall winners and relegating the Flack combination to fourth overall.

Chris Lander, Ross Cunningham, Brad Marshall and John Smith were the other team to win all four games and overall second place. Shane Rixom, Pat Murray, “Bluey” Smith and Frank Tyson dropped an afternoon game but still managed third place overall.

Although not successful in taking home any chocolates, our sponsor SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS were represented by three generations of Bradshaws – Barry, Paul and Hadyn. Thanks again for the on-going sponsorship, gents, without which we would not be able to attract such strong fields to these events. There were 20 visitors in the field of 72 that 22

competed on this day.

Without the continuing support of the Jan Cook’s team of helpers providing morning tea and five varieties of soup, and Anne Orton helping with the scoring these events would not be as enjoyable or as efficiently run as they are. Thanks all.

Mixed Fours Championship In October Barbara Lorencs (Skip), Juris Lorencs, Pauline Marsden and Brian Lucas won the 2019-2020 Sorrento Mixed Fours Championship.

They narrowly defeated Murray Hulbert (Skip), Kerry Morgan, Jan Paniperis and Peter Morgan 16-12 in the final. Earlier the Lorencs combination had beaten Peter Flack (Skip), Wayne Morrell, Jan Cook and Sandy Everest in one semi-final, while the Hulbert squad had accounted for Stan van Mosseveld (Skip), Bob Jeffs, Shelley Jeffs and Robyn van Mosseveld in the other.

In the final, the Hulbert side raced away to lead 7-2 after five ends and seemed to have the Lorencs’ measure. But steady bowling by the latter tied the scores at 7-7 after eight ends and a 8-7 lead after nine ends. The next two ends were killed as the sides fought for control of the match, before the Lorencs’ pulled ahead to lead by four shots after 12 of the 18 scheduled ends. Great bowling from Jan Paniperis hauled the Hulbert squad back into the match and they trailed by only one shot after 14 ends. Two singles and a double to the Lorencs’ over the 24

next three ends saw them lead by five with one end to play, but despite several attempts to kill the end and force a relay of the end, Barbara and her teammates held out for a well-deserved win.

Women’s Match Committee FRC Construction Nominated Pairs It was such a pity the weather did us no justice, as it was our last day for the season of Nominated Open Pairs.

Anyway we managed to get 10 ends in so as to get a result. Winners were John Abercrombie and John Brown and runners up were Mike and Bev Carrigy.

Divorced Pairs Championship Our first Championship of the new season was the Divorced Pairs. We thank “Eyes On Optometrist” who very kindly sponsored this event.

The main aim in the Divorced Pairs is to have an enjoyable start to the season.

Thirty teams took to the greens in September with players from all divisions teaming up with their ‘unusual’ partners to make this day a little bit different from our usual Championships events. This resulted in a fun day for everyone of all capabilities. We had some great results from some of the “unfancied” teams, which reminds us that “On the Day” anyone can win!

We played two games of 14 ends, one in the morning and the other after lunch. The greens were in good condition, and this was complimented by the beautiful weather we experienced.

We ended the day with a sausage sizzle. Congratulations to the winners Trevor Orton and Lee Leach, and the runners up – Juris Lorencs and Pauline Marsden. Also congratulations to Ray Stapledon and Denise Odell who managed to get an eight off two first division bowlers.

Women’s 100 UP This October event was our first Championship of the new season with 27 entries. Format of play was sectional with nine sections of three players. A lovely day under blue skies made it a great session and this gave us nine winners to carry on to the knock-out rounds.

The following Wednesday required an alignment round giving us eight players for the quarter final. Once again a superb day of bowls, the weather was good, the greens were running well, and we had a few spectators around to watch the play.

Our four semi-finalists were Jan Paniperis who played against Nerrida Porteous, and Barbara Lorencs who played Kath Harris. Nerrida 27

and Barbara were on top form, they both took the lead early on and continued to forge ahead to win their games.

The final saw Nerrida and Barbara compete for the Championship. Both of these ladies have won the 100 UP previously, Nerrida winning it last year and Barbara the year before so it was anyone’s guess as to who the winner would be. Both played well, however Nerrida carried her good form from the morning throughout the final game with excellent play to take the Championship Trophy for the 100 Up. – Charmain Harris/Jan Siney/Lee Leach

Annual Cancer Day

O

ur Annual Cancer Day was held in September. It was a lovely day although the breeze was a bit fresh. Every one enjoyed the bowls with 32 members supporting this special fund-raising day. All the fees paid, together with some donations, meant that we were able to donate $250 to the Cancer Foundation.

Annual Beyond Blue Day

I

t was great to see 32 members turn up for our annual Beyond Blue Charity Day. The good turnout meant that we were able to raise $192 for this organisation. Beyond Blue is an Australian independent 29

non-profit organisation that works to address issues associated with depression, suicide, anxiety disorders and other related mental disorders.

Winners were Merv Gregory, Eric Tompkins, Bernie Smith and Doug Pittaway. Runners up were Helen Eisenmann, Colin Scott, Jenny Gandras and Alan Tait – Barbara Spence

First Aid Lecture and Demo

n August we held an update on first aid and also a demonstration on the use of the defibrillator. As we are fortunate to have a defibrillator on hand it is important that we know how to use it correctly should the need ever arise. There were representatives from Probus and the Sorrento Tennis Club and the feedback from all who attended was that the morning was a great success.

Marie, the instructor, was brilliant passing on her knowledge and doing so in such a comfortable and stress free manner.

Congratulations must go to the male member who asked “What wire?” When told that you can cut the wire on the lady patient’s bra if required. It nearly brought the house down !!

Scammers are increasingly sophisticated in their activities, moving with the times to take advantage of new technology, communications methods, emerging products or services and major events to create plausible stories that will convince you to part with your money or personal details. Often older Australians have more money and accumulated wealth than younger people, making them an attractive target for a scammer.

Scammers will also scour dating sites and social media for older Australians who have recently divorced or lost a long term partner, taking advantage of their inexperience with these sites and their often vulnerable emotional state. Older Australians may also be seen by scammers as generally less internet and computer savvy or familiar with new technology.

Some Common Scams:

• Attempts to gain your personal information: Scammers use all kinds of sneaky approaches to steal your personal details. Once obtained, they can use your identity to commit fraudulent activities such as using your credit card or opening a bank account • Buying or selling: Scammers prey on consumers and businesses that are buying or selling products and services. Not every transaction is legitimate • Dating and romance: Scammers take advantage of people looking for romantic partners, often via dating websites, apps or social media by pretending to be prospective companions. They play on emotional triggers to get you to provide money, gifts or personal details • Fake charities: Scammers impersonate genuine charities and ask 31

for donations or contact you claiming to collect money after natural disasters or major events Investments: If you are looking for a fast way to make money, watch out – scammers have invented all sorts of fake money-making opportunities to prey on your enthusiasm and get your cash Jobs and employment: These scams trick you into handing over your money by offering you a ‘guaranteed’ way to make fast money or a high-paying job for little effort Threats and extortion: Scammers will use any means possible to steal your identity or your money – including threatening your life or ‘hijacking’ your computer Unexpected money: Scammers invent convincing and seemingly legitimate reasons to give you false hope about offers of money.

There are no get-rich-quick schemes, so always think twice before handing over your details or dollars Unexpected winnings: Don’t be lured by a surprise win. These scams try to trick you into giving money upfront or your personal information in order to receive a prize from a lottery or competition that you never entered.

What to do if you’ve been scammed Report it on https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam. You can’t always get your money back if you’ve been scammed, especially if you’ve handed over cash. However, if you’ve paid for goods or services by credit card you have more protection and if you used a debit card you may be able to ask your bank to block or recall the payment.

Finally, protect yourself from scams. A Budding Cricket Commentator at a Bowls Game

D

id you hear about an energetic young cadet sports writer, with the definite goal of becoming a senior cricket writer, who turned up for work one day fully expecting to be sent out to cover the local grade cricket grand final. But the ambitious young man was absolutely aghast when his sporting editor told him: “Sorry son, the grade cricket is going to be handled by someone else – I want you to go out and cover a very important lawn bowls event between North Beach and Sorrento at the Sorrento Bowling Club. Besides it will be a good test to see if you are to become a decent all-round sports writer”.

Realising he had no say in the matter, and keen to impress his boss, the budding young scribe took a deep breath and set off to cover (and watch) his very first game of bowls. He was determined not to botch his unexpected assignment. Later that afternoon he pulled out his laptop and began hammering the keys. He wrote: “Even before the toss of the coin, it was obvious who was going to send down the first delivery – the surface was an absolute green-top and there was a nice little sea breeze to be utilized.

But it seems all the hullabaloo over what Trevor Chappell did, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1981, had died down because players from both sides were bowling underarm grubbers. It was interesting to see that there were only bowlers and no batsmen!

As I thought, right from the start, just about every delivery was either an out-swinger or an in-swinger as the players strove to get close to the kitty – no pussy-footing in that regard.

I must say the batsman and wicket-keeper at the other end seemed overly friendly, standing side by side and completely obscuring the stumps. But the field placings were also totally unconventional, with all the participants standing at either straight hit or on the fence directly at the other end. Yorkers were out of the question as all deliveries kept extremely low because of the lack of bounce.

Sorrento’s captain was soon becoming agitated as his bowlers continually sent down wides. By comparison, North Beach’s captain was a lot happier, especially when his third man signalled a six had been scored.

But with the pressure building, I got the distinct impression things were becoming a bit nasty.

The match umpire, who kept an incredibly low profile, seemed oblivious to the fact that players from both sides continually walked straight up the wicket with no intention of preventing advantageous footmarks on the surface. And, with the aid of my binoculars, I could swear I saw one bowler brazenly squeeze something out of a tube and rub it on his bowl – it looked to me as if it was something called Rippo and not Brylcreem, which players of yesteryear used to apply to their hair and then transfer to the ball.

It looks like he is polishing the bowl with his wife’s pantihose! But a player then rubbing the bowl on his crotch, to enhance the prospect of more swing, was probably not a good idea unless he wanted to end up with a hernia.

Emotions in cricket are still raw after what happened in South Africa 34

last year, but I’m certain I also saw one player pull something yellow out of his hip pocket and give his bowl a good rub. I couldn’t get close enough to see if it had a Bunnings tag on it.

At one stage, the North Beach captain, three times in a row, raised his hat after teammates had sent down three magnificent bowls – it was a bit different, but I guess it was bowls’ version of a hat trick.

Suddenly Sorrento’s players, no doubt aided by bowling mostly around the wicket and into the footmarks, lifted with a five—otherwise known as a Michelle Pfeiffer I am told. But with two excellent bowls, the North Beach team had again hit the lead. Sorrento’s captain remonstrated with his Second who responded, arguing ‘that there was a bit of moisture under the covers this morning and I have gone in without protection’.

Sorrento’s third steeled himself, spurred on by some remarkable body language from his captain. But both his bowls are disastrous, with his last bowl hitting North Beach’s slightly short bowl in for a sixth shot.

His captain asks him “What’s the difference between a bad bowler and Cinderella?” “Cinderella knows when to leave the ball.” The third responds with ‘our team can’t even have a drink; we have no openers’.

I thought sledging was meant for the opposition.

Down again on the next end, the Sorrento captain decides to come off his long run and with his first bowl hits the kitty really hard and sends it flying into the gully. The North Beach captain needs to do something special on the last end to avoid an embarrassing loss and lose all bragging rights with his morbid and downtrodden teammates. Legs buckling, arms like jelly, 35

confidence shot, moisture building in his eyes, he lines up and delivers an overweight bowl which swung so far the wrong way it looks as though it is going out of bounds.

The Sorrento players are delirious. But suddenly the errant bowl hits some bowl on the pitch, causing a major in-swing and slowing its speed. It limps into fourth shot, then third, second and finally, next to the edge of gully, rests just above the kitty for shot. Sorrento’s players are mortified, calling for the UEDRS (Ultra Edge Decision Review System) to see whether the bowl had been tampered with or whether a drug test should be taken.

The umpire who retired some time ago and has not lifted a finger since, saunters down the pitch and rules the North Beach captain’s bowl a fair delivery. It was a narrow North Beach win indeed with two sixers, three fours and quite a few singles, but as I drove away, I was somehow grateful I didn’t have to do this all over again for the next four days.”

Helen Eisenmann Walks the Camino Santiago

O

ur goal was to walk the famous 600 km Camino Santiago in Spain. The reason was that my sister Christine and I, wanted to fulfil a promise to our deceased sisters. We also wanted to do a bit of bonding after almost 40 years of living apart in Australia and Germany.

In addition we wanted to prove that we could do it despite our age and lack of physical condition. The plan was to walk the 600 km in 36

four weeks or about 20km per day. We decided not to sleep in public shelters/hostels or share a room with other snoring, coughing and sneezing pilgrims. We would only carry what we needed for each day in our backpacks and everything else would be transported from hotel to hotel.

Like most pilgrims we started at the French/Spanish border at St. JeanPied-de-Porte. The first day of the hike was one of the hardest as we had to cross the Pyrenees which meant climbing up to 1430m. Usually the reward is a gorgeous view over the mountain range, cattle grazing on green pastures and picturesque farms. We did not see any of it as it rained, and the fog was so thick. There must have been cattle as we could hear their bells. The climb was exhausting and the descent equally demanding.

The hike through the countryside mostly using dirt roads, passing small villages, was picture perfect as the weather improved and we found a winery close to a monastery, that served red wine and water as libation to needy pilgrims!

After having walked through seemingly endless fields of corn and crop, sunflowers and vine, the big cities Pamplona and Logrono were a welcome change. After two weeks we reached Burgos, a medieval city with an impressive cathedral. Our next destination was Leon, an equally medieval city with a beautiful cathedral. Although it felt good to switch the hiking boots for sandals for a day, and enjoy the comfort of the cities, we still had 300 km to go and another mountain range to cross. Unfortunately the weather went from bad to worse with rain, storm, wind and a morning temperature of 10°C. We trudged along more corn fields. The closer we got to Galicia, the more it rained, and cattle were out on pastures and the hike turned into a slalom to avoid the ever-present dung on every path and street.

We developed a routine of starting the hike at 8am and walking until around 4pm stopping whenever there was a nice shady or dry place.

We lived on bread, fruit, yoghurt, coffee and water. All the restaurants we visited offered a cheap pilgrim’s menu consisting of starter, entrée and dessert, including wine. It was comparatively cheap and offered a decent variety of meat and fish.

Over the four weeks we did not miss the radio, TV or the internet which was used to let our families know where we were and that there were no blisters, problems, fights or homesickness. Our trip was exciting and adventurous, and we had a lot of fun, talking about old times, exchanging ideas and plans, contemplating and just unwinding. And of course, there were always our fellow pilgrims who provided topics for conversation. We still wonder whether • the Asian girl with the very large backpack made it beyond the second day?

• the German got around to hiking or whether he is still looking for the cheapest deal in shelters?

• the Englishman finally found someone to proselytize?

One needs to prove a hike of at least 100 km on foot to be eligible for a letter of indulgence.

Our pilgrim’s pass shows stamps from 26 towns/villages, proving that we had covered a total of 598 km when we reached our goal Santiago de Compostela.

I was asked how I could do the hike after I had a knee replacement surgery a year and a half ago. The surgery went very well, and the exercise I was advised to do made me walk around Duncraig probably twice the kilometres of the Camino Santiago although not in one month.

The doctor, a native Swiss and mountain climber himself, encouraged me to go on the hike and I figured if he has so much confidence in 39

his work, then I have to prove him right and show that his work is appreciated and put to good use.

Dyenamic Masters Mixed Fours

T

he inaugural Dyenamic Masters Mixed Fours, generously sponsored by TREVORS CARPETS, was held on Sunday 29 and Monday 30 September. The event attracted a 32-team strong field consisting of many state and premier league bowlers, as well as some hopeful other teams. Master Series and National Ranking points were available for this event. The weather was beautiful and the greens true, and almost all teams spoke highly of their experience.

The Sorrento ladies were once again mobilised to provide a light lunch and morning tea for each day and our thanks goes to them and to Pauline Marsden for her efforts in bringing the sides together.

I would also like to thank the Men’s Match Committee who ran the event.

With 32 teams entered a change to the conditions of play announced on the first morning meant that eight section winners would progress to the Monday playoff games. Of the 17 Sorrento players in the event, six progressed through Sunday’s matches. The quarter-finals were all surprisingly one-sided affairs with the four semi-finalist teams comfortably accounting for their opponents, and all six remaining Sorrento players were unfortunately eliminated.

The Packer team set up an early lead and led 8-1 after five ends. Despite their best efforts, the Alden side could not bridge the gap and by the 11th end were still ten shots behind.

A run of four consecutive end wins to the Packer squad saw them reach an unassailable lead before the match was declared over after 16 of the scheduled 18 ends with the score at 23-7.

Tribute to Bill Leyland

I

have written previously about the infamous Table 13 (located adjacent to the Chase the Joker board) that existed since the 1980’s.

It was the home to some of the Club’s great characters, who over a few beers would debate all manner of things including the merits of bowls selection decisions.

Table 13 consisted of characters like Max Gouldthorp, Mike Smith, Pat Sweeney and of course Bill Leyland. Bill and Pat Sweeney provided the more reasonable and moderating voices. Bill commented to me some months back that the Club had changed for him since almost all those characters at Table 13 had passed away over time and he missed them.

Sadly, Bill Leyland passed away on 25 September 2019 but goes on now to re-join his friends who await him at the heavenly Table 13.

Bill and loving wife May emigrated to Perth in 1973 with their son and daughter and lived initially in a flat in South Perth. They bought their first home in Duncraig. Bill worked at Hollywood Repatriation Hospital making orthopaedic appliances before moving on to work for the then Shire of Wanneroo.

Bill and May were at the doorstep once they learned of a new sporting club for soccer, tennis and bowls being built in Duncraig. From the outset in 1976, Bill became a founding member of the then Sorrento Sporting Club, later to be renamed the Sorrento Bowling Club. He helped to lay A and B greens and continued volunteering for over 30 years. His effort was recognised in 2006 with a Life Membership. May was rewarded for her work with a Life Membership in 2010.

Bill was the consummate gentlemen with never a bad word to say about anyone. I recall his usual greeting “Well how’s it going then Brian”. When he was unable to play bowls, he remained very active in the Club and was always interested and complimentary about what was happening.

Even with his health failing he would visit the Club regularly with May and lifelong friend Ralph Woodhouse and his wife, sitting on the veranda and watching the bowls, beer in hand.

The Homeless Man

A

man was walking down the street when he was approached by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man opened his wallet, took out ten dollars and said, “If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?”

“No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the homeless man replied. “Will you spend this on nomination fees at a bowling club instead of food?” the man asked.

“Are you NUTS!” replied the homeless man. “I haven’t played lawn bowls in 10 years!” “Well,” said the man, “I’m not going to give you money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.” The homeless man 48

was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that?

The man replied, “That’s okay. It’s important for her to see what a guy looks like after he’s given up drinking and bowls.”

ur building extensions are now complete and in use. Numerous volunteers have been busy moving furniture, files and boxes into the new office and boardroom. Volunteers have also been busy doing repair work around greens and gardens. I must take this opportunity to 51

mention our “garden gnome” Robyn Rowe who arrives most Mondays with a home made cake for all of the other garden gnomes. Now I know why Monday garden positions are always full.

Practice Techniques

H

ow much practice do you do on your own? Do you always just play games, and when you do, do you play the hard shots? Do you even think about the shots that you need to work on, or do you think it will just work out each time you go out there?

Think about Tennis – they always know their strengths and weaknesses and they think about their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses – in bowls, we rarely think of these things. Do you know your strengths and weaknesses? Most guess, few know...

To get better you must practice on your own – not all the time, but at least sometimes, and you need to focus – if you don’t want to get better, then don’t worry. Don’t be scared to practice in poor conditions – windy etc. – in matches, we don’t get to just chuck them in the bag if things aren’t going well.

Do different things on different days – work out what works for you…

TUESDAY might be varied length day, FRIDAY might be consistency day, SATURDAY might be just rolling some down…whatever works for you.

If you want to improve your bowls, you need some practice techniques.

It is unproductive to just roll up or get involved in a game of 2-4-2 with your mates. I recommend the following drills: Jack and 2 Bowl Drill Ideal for leads, but still great for anyone wanting to improve their game. Roll the jack to the desired length – only correct the line if it is grossly out of line. Set your own length – the goal is not to be able to score perfectly every time – you need to challenge yourself. Analyse your results after you’ve done your drills.

Weight Control Drill A great drill for adjusting your weight – adding that extra metre after you’ve come up short or dropping weight after you have gone through.

Your first bowl is the marker then go “Short to Long” – you need to pass each bowl in turn, so your second bowl must pass your first, your third bowl must pass the second etc. Now change to “Long to Short” – you need to reduce weight each bowl, so your second bowl should come up short of your first, your third short of your second etc. Give yourself a maximum distance – the BA training squad use three metres between the first and last bowl, so basically a metre every time. Feel the bowl out of your hand on these drills – they are about really feeling the weight.

Grouping Drill This is a great consistency drill – you don’t even use a jack! Your first bowl is the marker, rolled to the length indicated on the score sheet.

You must then get each bowl within your scoring distance from the original bowl – again, set your distance to suit you – don’t aim for perfection, but improvement. Really feel your delivery on this one – this is what it is all about – repetition. If you can get good at this one, playing good bowl after good bowl gets easier. Really concentrate on the feel of your delivery when doing this drill.

Driving Drills You can make up your own here – if you want to work on your drives, setup a drill to do it. Keep your scores to track improvement. Make it harder if you need to.

The Perfect End Roll one jack, draw to it (within your specified distance).Roll another jack, draw to it (again within your distance).Roll a third jack, draw to it (within your distance). Finally, nominate a bowl or jack on the green, drive and hit it. Do all that in one end, and you have the perfect end!

Then do it again.

Drawing to the Ditch You can use Jack and 2 Bowl Sheet as a “Draw to Ditch” sheet – just use two mats to vary the distance instead of jacks, and always play to the ditch – decide the distance you think will give you the best outcomes.

Croquet Report Events Mid July, Croquet held a sausage sizzle at the Club, for our members and their partners. It was well attended, with some of our past and social members attending.

A social lunch was held at the Kingsley Tavern in early September and was attended by 18 croquet members and their guests. The “lucky ticket” draw was won by Liz Woods with lucky number “5”.

Over the long “Queen’s Birthday” weekend at end September, six Sorrento members played in the graded Golf Croquet Doubles Competitions at Halls Head. The Club hosted a total of 82 players 54

from 12 different clubs. The stand-out results came in the “D” Grade Competition, in which four of our newest members played their first formal competition and stunned the opposition with the overall winners being Jenny Wilmot and Cheryl Saul; with Jan and Terry Craddock being placed a close fourth in a field of nine pairs after a hoop countback. The Club is super-proud of the efforts of these players as this was the first time in several years that a club other than Halls Head has won the competition. Special congratulations are deserved by these four players. Trish Klemp and Di McGivern were runners-up in the “B” Grade Competition, with the winners being a couple from Narrogin. Well done to them too! Sorrento can hold its head up high!

The weekend weather was superb, and everyone enjoyed a long day of some memorable games of croquet amongst very hospitable hosts and guests.

Club Championships In our Golf Doubles Trish Klemp and Di McGivern were outright winners on this day with three wins. No hoop count back was required.

In the Golf Singles David Ward and Jan Craddock both scored sevenwins and one loss. A hoop count back was required with David Ward winning by five hoops.

Celebrations This year three of our long-standing members reached an important milestone in their lives – each turning 80 years of age. Our congratulations and best wishes to Terry Harvey, Trish Klemp and Judith Skeet.

Visitors to the Club • Curtin University requested that we host a group of autistic teenagers (and their carers) and introduce them to the rudiments of Golf Croquet. This was a successful occasion with eight teenagers learning how to play under the guidance of Di McGivern, Jan Craddock and Terry Harvey. It was very successful exercise and showed that our Club supports people with disabilities 55

Letter from Autism Association of WA “On Friday 12th October 2019, we attended a morning at Sorrento Croquet Club. We (a group of eight teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder and four adults were welcomed

by Di and her colleagues and were quickly shown the basics of croquet. This was a great opportunity for our teenagers to be exposed to a different type of sport and to experience collaboratively working with other people. The morning was fun, practical and competitive (at times). Despite the rain, we enjoyed being shown how to go through hoops and take it in turns. We all practiced waiting and offering verbal support to each other – lots of cheers and ‘well dones’ were spoken. The teenagers worked really nicely with Di and her colleagues. She was able to model simple, basic instructions for everyone to follow. By the end of the morning, every one of us had attempted to pass to a friend, score a hoop and cheer on our team mates.

Thanks again to the Sorrento Croquet Club; this was a wonderful experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

• Platinum Day once again attracted 40 newcomers with their time being split between about 90 minutes of bowls and croquet • We have recently encouraged members from other croquet clubs to join our members for a few social games of Ricochet and Golf Croquet. This has proved to be beneficial to our members who get the experience of playing with a wider range of players. In addition to this, we have had several individuals who have visited the Club with a view of finding out more about croquet and bowls.

2019 Senior Sides Championships

T

his year’s event was held in NSW. After a very early 4.30am arrival at Perth Airport, we had a very pleasant flight, and coach trip, arriving at our hotel late afternoon.

All States and Territories played a round robin over the next four days.

Both our women and men had mixed fortunes, with excellent bowls from each and every team. The competition is certainly tough but friendly.

The final game was completed on the Thursday and unfortunately neither the men’s or women’s sides won this last round.. The men went down to NSW 45 to 55 and ended up 4th on the ladder. On the women’s side their game ended 46 to 55, very similar to the men’s, and while they fought to keep third position they ended up 5th on the overall ladder.

Both of our Sides played to win against some formidable competitors and should be happy with their performance over the four days of play!

The best performed player accolade for the men was awarded to first time representative John Goddard, (Well done John!) and the best performed player accolade for the women was awarded to Noelene Abe. I’m sure that Chris, John and Liz would all agree that to be able to represent not only Sorrento Bowling Club but also WA is a huge honour, and I will always treasure the experience.

t the recent Bowls WA training course in September this year, the following members achieved accreditation or re-accreditation as National Umpires (including accreditation as measurer and marker): – Russell Ellen, Rosyln Newick-Ellen, Sharon Eggers and Nerrida Porteous. Congratulations to all for their efforts in achieving their accreditations.

The Laws of the Sport of Bowls’ has been recently updated in a new edition (3rd Ed Ver 3.1). The only changes relate to Bowls Australia Domestic Regulations DR 2 – Game Anomalies, and also Law 52, in relation to Bowls Specifications (Law 52.1).

These changes are mainly administrative and do not affect the playing of the game. The only player relevant rule changes from Bowls WA Pennant Competition ‘General Conditions” and ‘Conditions of Play’ for the 2019/20 season relate to the new format of the Men’s Midweek Pennants, which have been previously circulated.

ongratulation to our 3rd Division for winning both the Blue Water and Sports and Bowling Club Winter Championships Our Club had four sides entered in winter darts of which two won their grade championships which would be the envy of any darts club .

Our Sunday presentations day is just around the corner and we are looking at the option of new Sorrento darts club shirts for the coming season. Thank you to all the members who assisted throughout the year in running the Club. See you all at the presentation lunch – Wayne Gray

Letter To The Editor: Pc Or Not Pc Poor old City of Perth’s push to ensure Christmas celebrations should be “representative and inclusive” of multicultural communities is surely “over the top political correctness”.

It also prompted the writer to suggest a happy, feely and precious PC approach be adopted by Sorrento Bowling Club this festive season. Here are some ideas.

• No beers or alcoholic drinks to be sold at the Club on Christmas Day. Duh you say ‘cos it’s closed, but who cares we’re taking a stance.

• Now, Nativity arrangements. I doubt we can find three Wise Men or a Virgin at Sorrento. We’ll just have to have equal numbers of Shepherdesses and Shepherds, I guess. Joseph could be Josephine as gender diversity may dictate. The star attraction, well “Gender Reassignment Laws” could allow the little bub to be marked X on the birth certificate.

• Great care to be taken in the selection of decorations/ adornments to avoid attracting prejudice or offence to all interest groups. Perhaps a diverse committee can be set up to be culturally/gender sensitive to choices made. Have to keep the PC Lovies happy.

I’ve had enough of all this stuff. So this Christmas I’ll dig up some of those old TV shows to watch. You know the ones I mean, Benny Hill, Franky Howard, Alf Garnett, Black and White Minstrels or some Al Jolson. NOT PC but bloody entertaining!
