Some more “Did you hear/know” Did you hear that in a very important game of bowls the Skipper from the adjoining rink shouted out to Danny Condon: “Watch that red bowl coming onto your rink”? Danny duly kept his eye on the red bowl as it collided with a bowl on his rink. When asked he said “I was asked to watch the bowl – not stop it”.

Did you hear that the English Bowling Federation has recently become embroiled in a sexism row after a rule change? Men now have the option to wear tailored shorts or trousers, while playing in inter-county matches and national championships. In contrast, female bowlers may only wear cropped tailored trousers or a double-pleated skirt that covers the knees while competing. “It is blatant sexism,” one female 7

bowler said. “I have been playing bowls for 15 years and it is a fantastic game but it can be so antiquated. In other countries, men and women get to wear shorts of the brightest colours and closer to home, female golf players can wear shorts, so why should bowls players be any different?”

Did you hear that the ACT Government has launched a review into the future of lawn bowls after four Clubs have been forced to shut down over the last decade? Apparently bowls clubs have been the target for developers over the years, with concern rising about the long term future of clubs and whether more clubs would be sold or redeveloped. As a result, the ACT Government and Bowls ACT, are undertaking a strategic review of bowls to assist with future planning. They will detail the: • cost of operating and maintaining bowling greens • the short and long term future of existing lawn bowls facilities • and will look at membership and usage to see how many lawn bowling greens are required in the ACT. Did you hear that 20 years ago when Juris Lorencs and Murray Newman were playing on grass in the Darwin Masters they lost because the “tide came in”? This is the 66th excuse we have heard for a bad bowl! Cricket players have been heard to blame an incoming tide for changing the characteristics of a cricket pitch, but never top quality lawn bowlers.

Did you hear that Sorrento players did well in Dongara when Peter Balcombe, Brian Collins, Brian Lucas and Wayne Gray travelled to Dongara in May to compete in the Port Denison Bowling Club’s competition? The competition consisted of two days of fours and one day of pairs. Losing their first game on the second day of fours proved costly.

Sorrento finished in fifth spot after winning five of the six games played.

Brian Collins and Brian Lucas won all four pairs games to finish third.

Peter Balcombe and Wayne Gray missed out on prize money losing their first game but winning the next three. It’s funny how the first game of the day was lost after they prepared so well the night before.

Did you hear that a mass brawl erupted at a lawn bowls match, in Devon UK, as teens armed with chairs invaded the bowling green and hurled stones at terrified pensioners? They reportedly targeted an elderly man while armed with chairs and stones. Police arrested two 14-year-olds. A 69-year-old man needed treatment for cuts to his face from the attack.

Did you know that, according to John Brown, in the 42 years that he has been bowling, he has never been in a Pennant team that has been demoted? Is this good news or bad news or just clever Selection Committees?

Did you hear that Nerrida and Ross Porteous raised $7300 for charity when they opened their garden to the public on a weekend in May? Their arboretum of deciduous trees provided a riot of colour in yellow, orange and red and the stunning roses were in full bloom. The money raised will be shared between: • the Zonta Service Club Nerrida supports. This club works to end violence against women • women’s refuges, educational bursaries and women’s health • and Open Gardens West Coast. They intend spending that money on enhancing the gardens that surround Woodbridge House, a National Trust property in Guildford, to bring them back to their former glory.

Did you know that Peter McIntosh and Bob Mulroy have just celebrated their 80th birthdays? Also congratulations to Alan and Maureen Gallagher who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June.

Did you know that a new era has dawned in the world of lawn bowling?

There is now an international competition, designed to revamp bowls in the same way the T20 format did for cricket. The new “Ultimate Bowls Championship” in April 2019 attracted over one million viewers as viewers tuned in on 7TWO and Fox Sports. This new competition is designed to introduce people to the sport. The UBC’s modified rules, result in a faster and higher-scoring game.

Did you hear what happened at a Perth bowling club in 2004? According to the West Australian the Gosnells Bowling Club expected a surge in membership following a live sex show on their C green. The Club’s newsletter reported the incident of rumpy-pumpy and gave a blow-by-blow description of the action that had taken place on the green’s bank. A young, plump couple in their mid-twenties had entered via the gate, removed various items of clothing, laid down on the lush bank and performed for about 10 minutes. They then stood up, quickly dressed themselves and left. According to one Club member two buttock-shaped indentations were still visible on the bank days later. A prominent first division bowler was practising on A green when he became aware of something going on near C green. From all reports he out-sprinted other bowlers, but when he neared C green, he realised what was happening and came to a screeching halt and didn’t know whether to give some helpful hints or retreat and observe proceedings with all the other onlookers.

Warning to all bowlers: Next time you tell someone you are going to have a roll on C green, don’t be alarmed if your comment raises a few eyebrows.

Did you know that Sir Alex Ferguson, widely regarded as the best football manager of all time has a win ratio of only 59% or put differently, he 10

didn’t win 41% of the matches he managed? Another example is Roger Federer, the greatest tennis player ever. Again, one could reasonably expect that he would win most of the points he has played in his career, but the figure is only 54%. He has lost 46% of the points he has played in his career. So don’t be too despondent when you lose a game of bowls darts or croquet.

Did you hear that there has been some fighting, swearing and drunken violence at a bowls club in Cornwall? Bad behaviour has now become such a problem that organisers are threatening to ban offenders who abuse officials. The trouble is more widespread. In Southampton in 2017 a player allegedly even head-butted an opponent during an argument about etiquette on the green. Their rules are very strict and clear that there should be no butting while play is in progress. Tempers have become so frayed and abuse of officials so bad that organisers of national qualifying tournaments have sent a letter to all clubs warning that players who see red on the green will be thrown out of tournaments.

President’s Report

D

ear Club Members, I would like to offer my thanks and appreciation to the 81 members who gave up their time to attend our 2018/2019 Annual General Meeting on 23 June 2019. We were very privileged to have both our Patrons, Tony Krsticevic, State Member for Carine, and Albert Jacob, City of Joondalup Mayor, present. These gentlemen spoke very highly of the Club members and Club administration. I also thank you, the attendees, for your support and contribution during the meeting. To the members who supplied the delicious morning tea, many thanks. I would also like thank all the members who were elected to their various positions and roles. As I have said many times we may all have different titles but we all have the same common goal and vision, to be part of Sorrento Bowling Club, the best Bowling Club in Western Australia. For those of you who were not at this meeting herewith my report: In the past 12 months of our Club’s operations performance has gone from strength to strength and we are still the most successful bowling club in Perth. I would like to expand on some our successes over the past year.

Membership Our total membership at end of April 2019 was 800. We have 485 bowlers including recreational bowlers, there are 30 Croquet members and 285 social members. Sixty four percent of our members are male and 36% are female. The average age of male bowlers is 68 and average age of female bowlers is 73, male social members is 58 and female social 12

members is 68. Our goal is to increase membership to 850, targeting the 40-55 age bracket.

Financials Our Financial position is very sustainable. For year end 30 April 2019 we made a net profit of $42,776, this is up $16,635 on net profit for year end 2018. I thank our treasurer Pat Dichiera for the professional way our accounts and Annual report have been maintained and prepared for the past four years.

Projects completed or nearing competition • building extension western end of Club house. This has been funded by the City of Joondalup and is due for practical competition in July • eastern veranda extension funded by Club - completed • additional water fountain funded by grant money • installation of electric roller shutters for bar - completed • upgrade of Club’s audio/visual systems and purchase of new furniture.

Capital works 2019/2020 The following programme has been endorsed by the Governing Council: • the Club refurbishment • a new integrated computer system.

• the fitting out of the new Match Committee office and Boardroom • replacement of equipment for Greens and Grounds.

• the Bar refurbishment • a new external walkway including new shed.

• the synthetic green is a brought forward item which remains on our capital works programme and we will be looking for support and financial contribution from the City of Joondalup and the State Government.

Marketing and Communication Once again, I would like to acknowledge the effort put in by Denis Croker, Neville and Denise Odell for their professionalism and commitment to ensuring all members receive updates on what is happening 13

around the Club. Our website is one of the best and our quarterly news magazine produced by Neville and Denise is of the highest quality and greatly appreciated by all.

Sponsorship Under the stewardship of Barry Stewart most current sponsors have been retained and a few new sponsors have come on board. To date we have 40 Sponsors generating $30,000 worth of income.

Achievements on the Greens To win a club championship in bowls or croquet is a great achievement but to win a State event is a major achievement. I congratulate and acknowledge all Club and State champions. Congratulations Chris Lander, Pauline Bourne and Liz Marshall on representing Western Australia in the over 60’s State Teams. A big well done to Pauline Bourne for winning the Over 60’s Women Bowler of the year. I would also like to congratulate Gavan Ebsworth for becoming an International Bowls Umpire. Gavan has worked hard for this success, maybe we will see him umpiring at the next Commonwealth Games.

Achievements off the Greens Sorrento’s outstanding performance over the past years has been recognised with our Club being awarded Clubs WA’s Medium Club of the Year award in 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018. The last three consecutive years of success have been rewarded by being inducted into the Bowls WA Hall of Fame this year. Our Club has also been awarded Bowls WA Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year for 2018/2019. This is our third win out of the past four years. I would like to thank all our members for the part they played in winning these awards. To be recognised by Clubs WA, and Bowls WA is a great honour for our Club. Without your support and commitment to our Clubs operations, winning these awards would not have been possible.

Strategic Planning Our Club’s Strategic Plan, “Continuing to Thrive Through 2025” was developed in 2015. This Plan has been regularly reviewed. An updated 14

version is now available. I would like to thank Brian Lucas for updating this very important Club document.

Acknowledgements • to all our volunteers who spend so much time helping out at our Club • to our Social organisers who put together our dinner dances and evening functions • to Alan Mcfayden our green keeper and his team of willing workers • our Bar Manager Ian Lucas and his wonderful and patient staff • and of course our members who without them our Club would not exist. Sorrento Recognised as a “Great Club�

Congratulations! We did it again. On Friday 24 May 2019 Sorrento was once again honoured with the BowlsWA Metropolitan Club of the Year 2019 Award. The nominees were Bassendean, Bayswater, Fremantle, Manning, Mosman Park, Mundaring, Quinns Rocks, Safety Bay, Sorrento and South Perth. Can you imagine our delight when the winner was announced as SORRENTO. The Governing Council extends their sincere thanks and congratulations to the staff, volunteers and every member of Sorrento Bowling Club. The Club of the Year is your award and very well deserved.

Affirmation that we are indeed “the best bowling club” needs to come from external, credible sources such as Bowls WA and Clubs WA together with organisations such as the City of Joondalup and government agencies.

Being recognised as a “Club of the Year” is a wonderful achievement that demonstrates the excellence achieved in that year, but the real test of a great club is to maintain that excellence year after year. This is something rarely achieved.

2019 witnessed Sorrento winning the coveted Bowls WA Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year for the second year in succession and the fourth time in six years. 2019 also saw Sorrento being inaugurated as the first club to enter Clubs WA’s Hall of Fame, in recognition of winning their Medium Club of the Year award on three successive occasions and four times in six years. In total Sorrento has won a Club of the Year Award eight times in the past seven years.

Arguably Sorrento is the “best bowling club” if not medium club in the State and testimony to good management and the wonderful contribution of our many volunteers, coupled with the Club’s achievements over the past decade. We should all take a bow.

The criteria used by Bowls WA and Clubs WA differs with Bowls WA placing emphasis on bowls performance and related activities. This includes a focus on the number of active bowlers; Pennant performance; participation in Bowls WA committees and events; promotional activities for bowls and the Club; inclusion; community use of facilities; major works undertaken; and greens and outside facilities.

Clubs WA’s focus is more towards club management and operation and includes strategic planning; governance and compliance; organisation structure and communication strategies; key achievements and benefits 20

provided to members and the community; external stakeholder relations; club development strategies; volunteer management; and member engagement and marketing strategies.

Winning eight awards in seven years plus entering Clubs WA’s prestigious Hall of Fame is something that should give great pride to our members and the Joondalup community at large.

“Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering”

I

t was great to see Brian Lucas getting recognition from Clubs WA for his “Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering”. Brian was a finalist in this category at the Clubs WA awards night. Brian’s contribution to the success of the Sorrento Bowling, Croquet and Darts Club has been outstanding. Since becoming a member in 1985 he has made a tremendous contribution to our Club in the following capacities: • President, Secretary or Treasurer of our Darts Club from 1986- 2019 • Club Auditor 2005 and 2006 • Secretary of the Men’s Bowls in 2006 • Deputy President in 2006 • Treasurer in 2007 and 2008 • President in 2011,2012 and 2015/16 • on the Governing Council since 2015 • member of Bowls WA Board in 2018

Looking back at the wide variety of changes and innovations that Brian has overseen provides an insight into the time spent on these changes.

He has always taken a proactive approach to increasing revenues and eliminating unnecessary expenditure.

The two detailed long-term strategic plans which set in place our vision “to be recognised as the best bowling club in Western Australia” our mission; and the six key performance areas required have helped our Club progress to where it is today.

He has regularly ensured that our Constitution is reviewed and updated to ensure that we comply with legislation, He has also ensured our on-going compliance on OH&S and the Liquor Act. In 2015 in consultation with various committees Brian restructured our management model which resulted with the setting up of the Governing Council and the creation of two Vice Presidents responsible for Operational and Sporting issues.

His marketing and communication skills have ensured that we have a modern website, a quarterly newsletter, regular e-Newsletters and a Facebook presence. He has also professionalised our advertising brochures, booklets and flyers.

Brian played a big part in changing the relationship that the Club has with key stakeholders, particularly the City of Joondalup and our sponsors. This has increased grant and sponsorship income.

Every year he prepares the comprehensive documentation for the submissions which have resulted in our Club winning • Bowls WA’s Metropolitan Club of the Year in 2012, 2016,2018 and 2019 and • Clubs WA’s Medium Club of the Year in 2013,2016,2017 and 2018.

These last three consecutive wins resulted in Sorrento being inducted into Clubs WA’s Hall of Fame Brian has always displayed an empathetic and inclusive nature while remaining focussed on what needs to be done to ensure the prosperity 22

of our Club. The Club has recognised Brian’s contribution over the years awarding him • Life membership of the Sorrento Darts Club in 2003 (to go with his previous life membership with the Warwick Darts Club) and • Life membership of the Sorrento Bowling Club in 2013.

Brian brings a rather unique set of skills and experiences to the Club ranging from strategic planning, policy development through to systems development. He is a good problem solver and a great innovator and over the years has tried hard to transfer as much of his vision and experience to all committees and members.

One of Brian’s main strategies for transferring his knowledge and experience has been to stay on the Governing Council as an appointed Director. We all hope that this continues. Thank you, Brian, for your valuable contribution to our success and congratulation on being a finalist in this most prestigious award.

Bowls Legend Joins Sorrento Team

O

ver 70 bowling members assembled at the Club on Saturday 27 July to hear about the introduction of a strategy that is being developed to improve bowls performance across the Club.

Vice President (Sports and Participation), Rob Tozer informed members that the Governing Council had reviewed the Club’s bowls performance over recent seasons. While it goes without question that Sorrento is a highly successful club, fielding 27 divisions last year without a single forfeit, with half of the divisions finishing in the top four and one-third in finals, three being promoted and two winning Pennant flags. However, the loss of a premier division and failure to get any second division promoted over the past two seasons demonstrates that there is room for improvement.

The Club, Rob said is looking towards a holistic, all-in approach that accepts that members play bowls for different reasons ranging from players who are highly competitive and thrive to play in the highest division available through to players seeking more relaxed and social outcomes.

He mentioned the vital importance that the various bowls divisions like selectors, match, greens, coaches and officials work cooperatively to achieve common Club goals and an overarching bowls strategy.

Rob explained that the Club had approached a well-known, experienced, successful and respected member of the bowls fraternity to assist with the formulation of our bowls strategy.

In introducing John Goddard, Rob explained that the Club has been working with John over several months to develop the bowls strategy and hoped that he would be able to assist with its implementation.

John Goddard addressed the members thanking them for their attendance and referred to several bowlers that couldn’t make the morning discussion but who had earlier taken the time to speak with him. He invited members to speak freely and ask questions as part of an open forum. Questions and interaction from the members throughout the session was energetic and constructive and contributed fundamentally to the outcomes and decisions determined at the meeting.

John said that a successful strategy involves a mix of the whole Club including genders, ages and capabilities with effective communication.

Highlights of a successful strategy outlined by John included: • Involvement by as many members as possible in activities such as coaching. John welcomed Brian Clausen as a valuable member of the coaching team.

• Development of basic philosophies, Club and team rules, such as being on time; playing two bowls the same; finishing behind the head; watching a bowl to its finish, body language etc.

• Building a head; correct shot selection; and appreciating player capabilities and strengths • Knowing the role of each position • No recriminations and avoiding “bar talk” John outlined his thoughts on a strong Club culture, that being an agreed set of values aligned to a common goal. Values include encouragement, commitment, respect, working and practicing together. Culture is hard to build but easy to lose.

Frank Tyson used his scrabble skills to develop the following explanation of what Sorrento stands for, that being: S – Successful O – Outcomes R – Require R – Responsibility E – Enthusiasm N – Nurturing T – Training O - Ownership The meeting overwhelmingly supported the implementation of the new bowls strategy and the introduction of the following initiatives: • Assistance to the Selection committees to provide information concerning the lower division players and improve information flows.

Where possible coaches will be assigned to each division to support the players and provide feedback.

• Communication channels will be strengthened to ensure that players are adequately supported, informed and can participate.

Communication and participation will be inclusive with no elitism and no negativity.

• Players seeking to improve their bowls should practice three times per week which includes Thursday pennants.

• A 40-bowl drill will be introduced to be completed once per fortnight by participating players to determine where their bowls capability is at and to establish their strongest hand. The 40-bowl drill is best played with a partner for ease in scoring. Brian Clausen volunteered to run the first drill commencing at 10am Saturday.

• A Pennant voting system will be introduced that allows players to also vote for themselves.

• Club and team culture will be strengthened around common goals and values.

• Game plans will be developed.

The President and Rob Tozer met with John Goddard at the end of July to discuss his continued involvement in this initiative and the Club is pleased to announce that John has agreed to take on the role of our Bowls Development Manager over the next three years. Initially John will not play pennants, enabling him to focus across multiple divisions.

Men’s Match Committee Report Veterans’ Singles The veteran’s singles for 2018-2019 concluded on Friday 10 May, with the 18 entrants from the previous week distilled down to the six section winners plus two “lucky losers” making up the quarter finalists.

From the quarter-finals, Barry Stewart, Bruce Eagles, John Collishaw and Juris Lorencs progressed with victories over Brian Saul, Bob Mulroy, John Sturk and Bob Jeffs respectively. Then, in some of the closest and 26

best matches in recent veteran’s championship history, Bruce triumphed 21-20 over a dogged Barry Stewart, while Juris edged John Collishaw 21-19 in the semi-finals. This meant that Bruce and Juris met in the final, which were played in beautiful sunny conditions on 15-second greens.

Juris started well by picking up three singles in the first three ends but then dropped six shots in the next three ends to fall behind. But a three on the seventh end tied the scores. Alternate singles meant that the scores were tied again at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 before Bruce picked up a maximum four, followed by a two and a three to establish an 18-9 lead and be in sight of the 21 shots needed to win. Juris fought on well, but in the end Bruce’s selection of draws and drives saw him to victory 21-14.

Men’s Invitation Fours The inaugural Men’s Invitation Fours, sponsored by TREVORS CARPET, was held on Saturday 11 May and was a spectacular success.

Due to the hard work of Men’s Captain John Godfrey, an outstanding field of 36 teams converged on the Club. Many Premier League players were present in club teams competing for over $10 000 in prize money on offer. With no “composite” teams permitted, and a limit of the number of teams allowed to represent each club, an exciting day was promised, and was delivered.

Players from as far afield as Dunsborough, Busselton and Bunbury were joined by Perth metropolitan teams representing Kalamunda, Mundaring, Forrestfield, Armadale, Gosnells, Thornlie, Cockburn, Bassendean, Mt Lawley, Rossmoyne, Victoria Park, Melville, Dalkeith-Nedlands, South Perth and Manning, joining with teams from our “neighbouring” clubs Warwick, Joondalup, North Beach, Cambridge and Wanneroo on the day. Five Sorrento teams were also formed to represent the home club, and to balance the number of teams competing. Magnificent weather and three 15-second greens prepared by the ground staff also contributed to the day’s brilliant outcome.

After morning tea, coordinated by Jan Cook and voraciously consumed by the players was served, play commenced at 9:30am. Four rounds were played. The first and fourth rounds of 13 ends were played as fours, with split pairs rounds of 11 ends as rounds two and three, allowing the “resting” players to enjoy their lunch. Players were rotated across all three greens during the course of the day. A roast ham and desert lunch was prepared by SILVER FERN and was universally enjoyed by all players and supporting volunteers, with many compliments being offered by the visitors.

The raffle for a set of bowls, bag and shoes was drawn on the day and was won by Jeff Baker. This raffle raised over $1000 for the Club.

Some notable upsets were recorded in all rounds, and some highly-fancied teams failing at each round. In the final analysis only two teams recorded the maximum four wins, three teams recorded 3 ½ wins, and only two teams failed to win a match. Notably, David Opie (Cambridge) and Noel Staude (Vic Park) both lost their final matches after winning each of their first three; which cost their team a share of the major prizes.

Outstanding contributors to the success of this event were John Godfrey and Pauline Marsden, who brought the day together. They were helped by Trevor and Anne Orton, Ken Giles, Chris Lander, Bob Jeffs, Joe Mola, John Farmer, Stan Van Mosseveld and many others that I have probably missed. Sorry. So successful was the day, that pre-registrations for next year’s event were submitted by around 15 teams on the day. A short review of the day was conducted at the end of the proceedings, noting the successes and areas for potential improvement for what promises to become an annual event. Dash for Cash #1 The first of the 2019 Dash for Cash events was held on Saturday 25 May, and attracted a field of 18 teams, including a number of visitors. The Dash for Cash events for 2019 are again being sponsored by SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS, and our thanks goes to Barry and Paul Bradshaw for their on-going support. Beautiful weather and magnificent greens greeted the players who, after enjoying morning tea, ventured onto their assigned rinks for the first of four, 11-end matches.

The first round saw one remarkable 24-2 result, but generally the draw was kind to most and close contests were the order of the round. By the lunch break, only three teams had recorded victories in each of their two matches, so the afternoon matches would be needed to separate these three, and possibly allow a team with fewer than four wins to claim a share of the prize money on offer.

Ultimately, only one team won all four matches, and even the team that got “smashed” 2-24 in their first match won their remaining three matches and claimed a share of the spoils. Only one team failed to win any of their four matches, but we won’t mention who they were will we Neville, John, Barry and Trevor?

Dash for Cash #2 The second Dash for Cash, again sponsored by Safeway Security Screens, was held on Saturday 29 June. This instalment of our regular winter series attracted a strong field of 22 teams which included around 30 bowlers from other clubs, several of whom are regular premier-league players. The weather was not great, being cool and cloudy, with showers of rain threatening. But we got through the four matches of eleven ends on greens running a surprising fast 13-14 seconds without serious interruption. Morning tea and soup-and-a-roll lunch were provided once again by Jan Cook’s team of volunteers and was much appreciated.

Only two teams managed to win all four games, but with prize money being distributed for first to fifth, for the best morning and afternoon and for individual rounds, half of the teams competing shared in the $2,000 on offer. Dash for Cash #3 The 3rd Dash for Cash for 2019, supported once again by SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS was brought forward one week to avoid a clash with a West Coast Eagles home game, and was played on Saturday 20 July. Windy and showery weather threatened to disrupt proceedings, but the weather held out and all four 11-end matches were completed with only a brief flurry of rain. Morning tea was coordinated by Jan Cook and was gratefully devoured prior to play commencing by the 80 players who attended: 28 of whom were visitors. This event is now establishing itself as almost a State-standard event with several Premier League players among the participants.

After the morning rounds were completed, only four teams had recorded two wins, so a keen afternoon’s competition loomed. The now-traditional soup-and-a-roll lunch was welcome in view of the cool weather, and once again our thanks to the volunteer ladies (and Peter McIntosh) who put the lunch together.

At the end of the day, only one team recorded wins in all four matches, but two others recorded three wins and a draw. Major results are shown below.

Major Change to Men’s Midweek Pennants

I

n the 2019/20 season male bowlers will see a change to the way Thursday Pennants are played. In late 2018 the Bowls WA Board commissioned the Bowls 2025 Committee to consider the current forms of the game in WA. The Committee considered the suitability of the current format(s), structures and timings of the various competitions. Submissions were requested from all clubs as well as from individual players. The Bowls 2025 Committee focussed on concerns about: 36

• the reducing participation rate for Pennant competition • excessive travel time as bowlers deal with Thursday peak traffic • declining interest by some players during one-sided games Based on the above Bowls WA announced the Men’s Midweek will now be as follows: • a Sets play competition comprising two nine end sets with winners of each set, based on shots up, will win a point. If the “shots up” score is equal after a nine-end set each team will get half a point • if after both sets are complete, and each team has won a set, a threeend tiebreaker (determined by shots up) is to be played to determine which team gets the two points on offer for a winning rink • in summary the scoring will be as follows: • one point per set won • half a point for a set draw • two points for the winning rink • thereby contributing to a maximum of twelve points for a threerink match • Point scoring is different for the 6th Division as only eight points are available • remember the aggregate has no bearing on the competition • play will be continuous. There will be no break between the sets • there will be no dead ends with the Jack placed on the “T” to complete the end. If the Jack cannot be correctly placed on the “T” due to an obstructing bowl, the Jack shall be placed as close as possible to the “T”, on the centre line of the rink without touching a bowl i.e. in front of and not behind the “T” • the first team to play will be as follows: • first set – winner of coin toss can choose to take the mat or give the mat away to start play • second set – the winner of the first set must take the mat to start the second set. If the first set is a draw, the winner of the last scoring end in that set must take the mat • three end Tiebreaker – as for the first set 37

• each further tiebreaker end if required – as for the first set • the game will start at about1:00pm (being ¾ hour earlier than the previous Pennant start time), with a non-compulsory open roll up (trial end) period commencing at 12.30pm. Note: there is no restriction on the number of trial ends undertaken within the trial period, but they must be completed or stopped prior to the game start time There have been some rumours that the new format will be for a oneyear trial basis. Ken Pride CEO of Bowls WA has, however, advised there has not been any decision as all competitions are reviewed at a season’s end and this season will be no different to all the others.

The shorter more exciting game will attract younger players. Sets play is now frequently used for televised bowls and bowlers will be able to try out this format of our game • the 30-minute roll up prior to a game will assist players who normally play on grass or synthetic as it will provide an opportunity for them to familiarise themselves with the different surface • the game will finish about an hour earlier due to the discontinuation of the current 20-minute roll up, the earlier start, the re-spotting of the jack and the change to 18 ends. It will however take a bit longer if there are tiebreakers required. This will help bowlers miss some of the peak hour traffic • if one rink loses badly, the other two rinks can win their games and the day, depending on set and overall match outcomes. Ken Pride has advised that this is one of the key reasons this new scoring system 38

was brought in. For example, if Team A loses 15-0, 10-1 and receive no points but their fellow team members win their four sets and go away 8-4 overall winners available which should help prevent declining interest by some players during one-sided games.

Other points to note: Clubs that were inclined to “stack� a team with bowlers from higher divisions will now need to seed in more stronger bowlers, rather than perhaps slotting in a strong couple or rink of bowlers hoping to carry the aggregate.

Selectors, team members, and particularly Skippers who are to play 39

points-critical bowls, will need to be aware of the impact of these changes as the much-promoted “last 7 ends” from previous seasons no longer applies.

Team managers will need to be appointed that are fully conversant with the changes and develop strategies for dealing with the various scenarios that could develop, with the aim of maximising the points available.

Clubs that take steps to address this aspect will be more successful than those that do not in my opinion.

A large club like Sorrento will need to lead the way here and appoint or develop a “strategist”.

he finalists in the Bowls WA Norma Samuel Award for the “Over 60’s Female Bowler of the Year” were Lee Poletti (Mosman Park), Irene Arndt ( Safety Bay) and our very own Pauline Bourne (Sorrento).

We were all thrilled when Pauline was announced as the winner of this prestigious award. We are so proud of Pauline and all she has achieved no only this year but throughout her bowling career.

She is a well-deserved winner of the award and we offer our congratulations and good wishes for her future endeavours. Pauline won the Over 60’s Mixed Pairs, was Runner-up in the Over 60’s Pairs and she was a semi-finalists in the Women’s Over 60’s Singles and a Semi-finalist in the Over 60’s Triples.

A

fter 20 years of marriage, a couple was lying in bed one evening, when the wife felt her husband begin to fondle her in ways he hadn’t in quite some time. It almost tickled as his fingers started at her neck, and then began moving down past the small of her back.

He then caressed her shoulders and neck, slowly working his hand down over her breasts, stopping just over her lower stomach. He then proceeded to place his hand on her left inner arm, progressing past the side of her breast again, working down her side, passed gently over her buttock and down her leg to her calf.

Then he proceeded up her inner thigh, stopping just at the uppermost portion of her leg. He continued in the same manner on her right side, 43

then suddenly stopped, rolled over and started to watch the TV. As she had become quite aroused by this caressing, she asked in a loving voice, “That was wonderful. Why did you stop?”

The Greek ‘J’ Party

D

id you hear that Jan Paniperis and her friend, Judy Etheridge, set off for a Greek adventure in May. The day after their arrival in Athens Judy was the victim of a very professional pickpocket. It put a real dampener on their first couple of days. However, copious amounts of ouzo soon made them forget their problems!

A Chinese proverb says that ‘A journey of a 1000 miles starts with one step’, well J&J may not have walked a 1000 miles but they certainly experienced a lot of steps! Anyone who’s been to Greece knows that the most important ‘must see’ church, castle or castello is usually the up the highest hill, read mountain, on the island! From Athens they moved to the Islands of Hydra, Mykonos, Naxos, Amorgos and Santorini, then back to Athens.

They tell me that they always kept up the quota of at least three ‘Js’ (a Judy, a Jan, two Janes, a Jeanie, a John and a George (not strictly a J but it sounds like one so George got included!).

Most islands have a Happy Hour so they were able to have cocktails at cut prices and of course ouzo! They did however manage some cultural events as well: 45

• the island of Delos off Mykonos which was the site of the first Greek financial crisis about 2500 years ago • a dinner and a tour of an organic vineyard on Mykonos • a recital by Mikis Theodorakis’ pianist on the island of Naxos • the phenomenal monastery of Panaghia Hozoviotissa on Amorgos • the opera ‘Norma’ by Bellini at the Herodes Atticus Theatre on the side of the Acropolis • on Hydra they found Leonard Cohen’s house and a seat, and a plaque dedicated to him.

Jan tells me that they discovered that it doesn’t matter how many miles you walk and how many steps you climb, you still put on weight if you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and have wine, cocktails and ouzo each day for five weeks! PS: for those interested, the only way to serve ouzo is – ouzo, water and then ice, any other way is sacrilege !

Sorrento’s 2019 Biggest Morning Tea

sea of yellow, greeted participants at Sorrento’s 2019 Biggest Morning Tea in aid of the Cancer Council. Robyn Rowe excelled herself decorating the hall with the help of Charmain Harris who created the table decorations which of course were yellow !! The day was filled with laughter, silly games and quizzes. Annie Taylor donated her “Fluffy Duck” cocktails, ably helped by May McLiver. The Fluffys were delicious and yellow. Betty and Mary sold huge amounts of raffle tickets for our many donated baskets of goodies.

Tony Krsticevic, Member for Carine, kindly accepted our invitation to attend. He judged the Bring Your Best Cup Competition. Tony picked a lady who had bought her cup from Boans, years ago and he told us he had worked at Boans years ago too.

Brenda modelled an item of clothing in our Dutch Auction, she looked 46

“cosy cat”, and it sold quickly. A silent auction, for a beautiful painting kindly donated by Larraine Brickell, raised $175. A vintage Scrabble set sold for $ 250 dollars. Generous people! Thank you to all who contributed wine, cakes, beer and goods to our efforts at fund raising for this worthy cause. An amount of $ 1857 was raised. We hope all who attended had an enjoyable morning. Thank you for attending.

Just another game of Pennant Bowls

A

while back bowlers on our rink were made aware by a somewhat forceful call from the opposing Skip, from another team, who declared an errant bowl was short and had to be removed. An umpire in our group chirped up declaring the required distance from the mat a bowl had to travel was 14 metres.

The umpire of the day was also present on one of our rinks and confirmed the 14m rule and the measurement proved it to be a legal delivery. As a final gesture a senior member of the club’s umpiring fraternity was also on hand and ruled that all was in order and the correct decisions had 47

been made. Thank goodness that was sorted. The amigos saved the day and proceedings proceeded.

Club Season Wind-up

T

he usual outstanding table settings welcomed a good turnout of members for this self - catered event. The opening entertainment began immediately. Dizzy Miss Lizzy belted out familiar renditions of favourite songs with her usual prowess. What a class performer she is!

Always a good choice for entertainment and insured the dance floor was busy. Some more busy than others with displays of dance moves not expected, perhaps, by the clientele attending. She entertained the crowd for a lengthy session.

Act 2, The Blues Brothers. Elwood and Jake were truly amazing. To be truthful not a lot of dancers took to the floor. We were mesmerised with their energetic renditions of their great songs. Heidi Heidi Ho. A great night. Well done Jan Cook and your helpers.

Does your Skipper Confuse you?

N

eville asked me to prepare a short summary of the various types of shots that players may be called upon to play during a game of bowls. He thought that some bowlers did not know the difference between an up-shot and a full blooded drive so here are my thoughts: “While the requirements of the term “Draw-Shot” is well understood a Skipper may request a member of the team to play range of different shots to provide the team 48

with an advantage or further improve the team’s potential to win an end. The following attempts to explain the terminology relevant to the various types of shots and the requirements of those shots: The “Wresting” shot

The purpose of the “Wresting” shot bowl is to turn a bowl out of the count and take its place. The important requirement is the control of the pace required to turn an opposition bowl. The pace of the bowl then determines the line of the bowl. Ideally, if the shot fails to make the required contact then the bowl should cross the head and come to rest within one metre behind the head.

The “Reach the Head” shot Where your team’s bowls are short of the jack (within a metre) and may be affecting an attempted draw shot. The bowler may choose the desired pace of the bowl to advance the short bowl towards the jack. They may be asked to “crack an egg” on a specific bowl. The pace of the bowl then determines the line of the bowl. There are advantages in playing this shot at the correct pace as there is a chance of glancing off existing bowls or the bowl may contact the jack.

The “Run Through” shot or “Stun and Run” shot Where opposition bowls are located short of the jack, the bowler may adjust the pace of the bowl to push the opposition bowl through the head (or sideways) and the bowl continues towards the jack. The pace of the bowl then determines the line of the bowl. In the case of the “Reach the Head” or “Stun and Run” shots the Skipper should be aware of the potential for the jack being moved backwards which could result in the loss of additional shots.

The “Trail” shot This shot is similar in execution to a “Wresting Shot” with the intended pace of the bowl to go just beyond the head and cross the head with the objective to move the jack backwards or sideways.

The “Controlled Running” Shot On mid-length ends, a Skipper may request a “Controlled Running” shot to be played where it is intended to disturb the head. The bowl should not go into the ditch. Having bowls located behind the head provides the Skipper with alternatives to attempt to win an end including playing a similar shot.

The “Running” shot The “Running” shot is a bowl played with at least ditch weight. This is quite a distinct shot from a drive as the bowl may bend 60 centimetres or more depending on the pace of the green. The “Running” shot is most valuable when trying to remove a bowl from the head or to take the jack through to the ditch. When playing this shot the pace of the shot determines the line of the bowl.

The “Drive” shot The “Drive” shot is the power shot in bowls and is utilised to remove an opposition shot bowl, to send the jack into the ditch or to kill an end.

However, there can be inherent risks with overuse of this shot, as not every “Drive” shot achieves the desired result. A bowler should not attempt to play a drive faster than his capacity.

The amount of bias on a “Drive” bowl will vary more for a heavy green than a fast green.

Staff Training in Action

The “Position” shot A Skipper will often request a team member to play a “Position” shot and indicate the desired spot for the bowl to finish. The “Position” shot usually requires an adjustment of line to ensure that the bowl clears the head in order to reach the desired destination.

The “Block” shot or “Robbo” This shot is now known as a “Robbo”. A Skipper may request a team member to play this shot to place a bowl into a position designed to protect the head or block the opposition from playing a hand. Care should be taken not to place the “Robbo” bowl in a position that would broaden the target for an opposition bowler or provide a bowl in a position they might be able to wick off. The “Block” shot is effective if it influences an opposition bowler to play a different shot. Enjoy your game of bowls – John Farmer

Getting To Know Our Members

C

armel and Lorraine Hyde have both come through the school of hard knocks but 63 years after first meeting they are in a good place and can look back on their lives with great satisfaction.

They have been playing bowls for 44 and 27 years respectively. Lorraine was a Member of Wanneroo prior to coming to Sorrento and it was there that she persuaded Carmel to join her on the greens.

Being a nurse, Lorraine met her husband, Max, at the Grand Hotel in Wellington Street where all the nurses lived. Carmel lived opposite her prospective husband, Kevin, when she was 17. He first asked her out to see a film, but she was more interested in dancing and sport of any 52

type, being good at tennis, netball, hockey, badminton, ten pin bowling, swimming and as we know too well, bowling.

Kevin and Max are longer with us but the bond between Lorraine and Carmel is stronger than ever. They live in the same complex at North Beach, play in the same division at the Sorrento Bowling Club and go on holidays together.

They have had their share of misfortunes – Lorraine with cancer and Carmel’s life did not get off to a happy start. However, they both worked hard and have been fortunate to have had wonderful family lives with supportive husbands and loving children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. The happiest moments in their lives were when they were married and had their children.

They are an indomitable pair as anyone knows who has played bowls with or against them. Both have a positive never-say-die attitude. However, they are both also very practical people, amongst many other things Lorraine has fixed cars and tiled her laundry and Carmel helped her husband build their first house, whilst looking after their first child at the same time.

It is not always the case that sisters-in-law become friends, but these two have been firm friends since meeting in 1956. They now spend their time playing bowls and travelling the world together. Those Hyde boys knew what they were doing when they chose Lorraine and Carmel – practical, hard-working, positive and lovely ladies.

“Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated”

his is a saying attributed to the American novelist Mark Twain, but Mike McGeehan could also have owned this quote during the Dash for Cash held in June. Mike had put his name down as a spare for the event, and on Friday the match committee was able to rustle up a full team to balance the numbers for the Saturday. On Friday night at around 8:30pm I messaged Mike’s mobile confirming that he was in a full team as it was a bit late to call him.

On Saturday morning, I was distressed to receive a reply from Mike’s mobile number that “Mike is dead. Please delete this number”. Somewhat shocked (to say the least) I messaged “Mike” back delicately asking for confirmation of his demise. About 10 agonising minutes later, Mike walked in the door! Mike has changed his mobile phone number, and that number is now assigned to another user in Queensland, who is apparently getting a bit fed up with people ringing Mike’s old number. A lesson in Sensitivity 101 might be in order for that Queenslander.

Life Membership Awarded to Wayne Gray

A

s President John Abercrombie emphasised at the Club’s AGM in June, one of the greatest recognitions that a Club member can receive is to be awarded Life Membership. Life Memberships are not awarded lightly. Nominations are carefully considered by a specially convened assessment panel that includes existing Life Members.

This group considers the merit of a 56

nomination against a strict criteria that is encapsulated in the Club’s Constitution and includes a requirement for nominees to demonstrate at least ten years Club membership; serving on one or more committees for not less than five years; consistently performing duties and functions at a level greater than generally expected, without seeking recognition or reward; having an unblemished record; and a nominee who always puts the welfare of our Club above personal ambition.

Governing Council unanimously and without hesitation agreed with the recommendation of the assessment panel to award Wayne Gray Life Membership of the Sorrento Bowling Club.

Wayne originally joined Sorrento to play darts but quickly became a competent and dedicated lawn bowler. During his 18 years as a member of Sorrento Wayne has fulfilled the role of President of the Sorrento Darts Club. He was also a member of the Club’s previous Executive Committee. In 2014 Wayne was appointed Vice President of Operations on our Governing Council.

In addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of the Vice President, which includes everything to do with Club operations, Wayne has applied his substantial project management and technology experience to oversee many projects such as clubhouse extensions, kitchen renovations, flood lighting, general infrastructure management, installation of CCTV security systems and a myriad of other technical and technological issues. With his input these projects have all been brought to a successful conclusion.

The Club is extremely fortunate to have a long serving volunteer with the breadth of experience and expertise that Wayne possesses. Projects such as our Club extensions require careful planning, negotiation and execution if they are to be successful and Wayne’s stewardship of these projects is greatly appreciated.

Croquet Report

Terry Craddock ready to take aim at his opponent

Events In May, Di McGivern, accompanied by new member Jenny Wilmot, attended a reception hosted by Mayor Albert Jacob and Councillors to show their appreciation of the contributions made by sporting clubs in Joondalup City Council. The evening was a delightful success and provided an opportunity to network with members from other sporting clubs. The Club was presented with a “Certificate of Appreciation” on the evening.

As a result of this event, a group of ladies from the Marmion Squash Club have expressed their interest in visiting Sorrento Croquet Club to try their hand at our game. We hope that several friendly games can be encouraged in future.

In June Kerry Bomford and Thora Lay made their way across Perth to play in the two-day Golf Croquet event known as the “Gosnells 12”. Although they did not bring home any major prizes, they felt very encouraged by some favourable remarks made by senior players about their standard of play.

Jenny Wilmot, Jan and Terry Craddock, all players from Sorrento, joined Beverley & York at the York Croquet Club for a day of Fun Play with plenty of food and laughter. (As per the York Croquet Club’s comments.) The aim was to get together as we are small clubs and need more variety of partners/opponents. It was arranged that when the numbers were drawn, you paired with a member from another club. This proved very beneficial and resulted in lots of discussion on the way home with regards to tactics. It was some of Sorrento’s members first time playing with members from another club and all enjoyed the experience.

Sorrento have extended a return game to York and Beverley.

Darts Club goes to Cervantes

ur Darts Club had a great trip to Cervantes. Some say it was a “Pinnacle” of success! The festivities started with a great after59

noon when we bowled against the locals from the Cervantes Bowling Club. This was followed by a very enjoyable evening at the club and a game of darts against the Cervantes team.

Unfortunately the Cervantes boys came up trumps in both bowls and darts but a good time was had by all. Kishore Dudhia tried his skills at lawn bowls but decided he would stick to playing darts. Apparently he found it a bit hard to stand up to the competition.

A big thank you to Richard for organising the bowling and to John for organising the darts. I would also like to thank the Cervantes Bowling Club for their hospitality.

This is our second trip to Cervantes and I’m sure we will be back again.
