R

eaders may be interested to know that this June 2017 newsletter is the 50th newsletter Denise and I have produced so apologies if we sometimes repeat ourselves.

We started with edition number 19, in February 2007, so have been going for ten years – an average of about five newsletters a year.

We now produce a newsletter each quarter and as a result they are a bit longer and take a quite a bit of time to produce. For each newsletter we need to: • Take, edit and sort photos. We now have 120061 images in our Sorrento folder in our computer so looking back for specific images is time consuming. We appreciate the photos we receive from Bruce Eagles, Carmel Hyde, Ray Stapledon, Jackie Maxwell and others.

• Find and write articles, stories and “Did you knows?” of interest to members. We appreciate the reports we receive from the Governing Council and the various Committees. It is great to receive contributions from Jim Woodward, as these are always so well written and enjoyed by our readers.

• Decide on what goes where and what is suitable and unlikely to offend members.

• Make sure all 41 Sponsors adverts are up to date and that suitable advertorial is written to promote Sponsors’ businesses.

• Do the final layout/sequence and edit and arrange a “Contents/Index” page. Pages and photos need to be juggled to make sure everything fits on the 64 pages.

• Arrange final proof-reading by Denise Odell, Jan Paniperis and Alan Rolls. They make sure we get the spelling of members names correct and that there are not too many grammatical errors, split infinitives or inconsistencies in the format of dates and the use of capital letters.

We get mainly positive feedback and not too much negative feedback from members.

We were however criticised for publishing an anonymous “Letter to the Editor” in the March 2017 edition and will not do this in the future. So please make sure that when you write a “Letter to the Editor” you include your name.

We have also had a complaint that we used a photo of a person in a previous newsletter

after having been asked not to use it. Apologies for this error. Will any member who does not want their photo to be used in the newsletter, on our Facebook page or on our website please advise Pauline Marsden and we will make sure it is not used.

Some more “Did you hear/knows?”

Did you know that in a test to see whether women were better at multi-tasking than men it was found that when men and women, under time pressure, had to juggle simple mathematics problems, answer the phone and decide how to find something lost in a field the women were found to be calmer, better organised and planned more carefully than the men? This is why Pauline Marsden, our Office Manager, is a great multi-tasker. During a one hour period, one Wednesday morning, during the Veteran Pairs, she was seen to: • be making toasties for hungry Veterans.

• selling beer to thirsty Veterans as the Barman had not arrived.

• adjusting the air-con as some Vets were too hot while others were too cold.

• answering the phone.

• photo copying menus.

• acting as a P.A. for Silver Fern Catering.

• resolving computer problems and sorting out the barbecue.

Someone offered her a broom so that she could sweep the floor as well.

Did you know that Saulie has had his cataracts done? When he arrived at bowls to tell us he had been able to read the paper that morning without his glasses he was asked whether he would still have to run after his bowls to see where they finished. The consensus was that his eyes were now so good he could remain on the mat and watch his bowls finish in the head.

Did you know that Colin Campbell has been cleaning the our Club’s windows? Thank you Colin! Keep up the good work.

Did you know that Jaffa (John Sturk) has not had an alcoholic drink for 35 years? His one mate has calculated that he has saved nearly $200 000.

Did you know that Osborne Park are this season’s Bowls WA Metropolitan Club of the year due to the work put in both on and off the green? Regularly considered one of the States biggest and progressive Clubs it is surprising to know they last won Club of the Year exactly forty years ago in 1977. They fielded teams in the finals of the all three top grade competitions with the Men’s Saturday and Midweek both narrowly defeated. However it was the work off the green with major renovations to the Club house, excellent greens, terrific Club run events and an extremely successful hosting of the Over 60’s National Championships that contributed to their success.

Did you know that when Jim Ironside went to New Zealand recently for his son’s wedding he played so well in a social game of bowls at the Otaki Bowling Club, that he was asked to stay on for a week so that he could represent the Club against their main rivals Waikanae?

Did you know that one of our newsletters ended up with Centenarian Jean Pfeiffer and her daughter Pam (Ellis) who live in Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast in Qld. Jean was 100 years old on Christmas Day As an ex bowler, she really enjoyed reading the articles and funny stories.

Did you know that in the recent State Mixed Pairs competition held at both Sorrento and Osborne Park Clubs, there were seven pairs representing our Club?. All did well, with three pairs winning their sectional play. Pauline Bourne paired with Chris Lander and Coral Smith with Brian Saul. Both pairs reached the semi-finals, but were both outplayed in their games and lost to better teams on the day. Both pairs were happy with their performances and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a great achievement for Sorrento having so many competitors representing our Club.

Did you hear that the pizza delivery man thought Bob Jeffs was Shelley’s father?

Perhaps he was just a bit short-sighted when he delivered the pizzas to their house..

Did you know that Barry Bradshaw has had eight sets of bowl in ten years? He told me that one of the changes occurred when he decided he did not want bowls with “nipples” as these are more affected by the wind. It is tough when you get on in years and end up not knowing the difference between dimples and nipples!

Did you know that a very good bowl can be described as a lollapalooza. Your Editor heard a bowl being described as a lollapalooza. The Webster dictionary defines this word as “one that is extraordinarily impressive”. Have you ever bowled a lollapalooza? (aka as a “humdinger”) Did you know that the Australian Croquet Team won the World Association Teams Championship “The MacRobertson Shield “ for the first time in 82 years? The contest was held in Palm Springs, California, USA and was contested by the World’s top four nations – USA, New Zealand, England and Australia.

Did you know that $1015 was raised for the Vienping Children’s Home Charity in Thailand at Marie Smart’s Jumble Sale? She is very grateful for the generosity shown by people who supported the garage sale through donating goods and money and also the people who purchased goods and the helpers on the day..

Strung up by the bowls!!!

Did you know that the Balmain Bowling Club NSW has a bowl banger in their Club?

This device is also know as “Newton’s balls” or an “Executive Ball Clicker”. Named after Sir Isaac Newton, it demonstrates the conservation of momentum and energy via a series of swinging spheres. But what will using lawn bowls bring? If the air is slow, there is humidity and the wind gusts probably a biased result that was not the fault of the player releasing them. Did you know that a comprehensive analysis of our volunteer effort showed that over a twelve month period our Club had 120 regular volunteers who contributed a total of 17070 volunteer hours valued at $530 000. Pretty impressive! Thanks go to our wonderful volunteers. The analysis showed that if it was not for our volunteers it’s hard to see how the Club could remain viable. PS: If you are feeling a bit guilty after reading this because you are not a volunteer – do not despair. Ken Giles will be more than happy to hear from you. You can contribute as much or a little as you wish; even an hour here and an hour there adds up and makes a great contribution to your Club.

The Third is all but hopeless,

Another drink before the game,

Before they venture ‘out’,

Then arguments on ‘tactics’ –

(An’ whose turn it is to shout).

These Sportsmen of the Green,

These athletes of the bowling mat,

The best you’ve ever seen.

Them Bowlers is a funny lot,

(As I said once before),

“Club of the Year” finalists – once again

T

hat’s right. Once again this year Sorrento is a finalist for both Bowls WA and Clubs WA Club of the Year awards. This award recognises and celebrates the Clubs who excelled during 2016/17 by demonstrating strong performance across their Club’s programs, administration, training and development, governance and management.

Unfortunately Sorrento missed out on the Bowls WA award no doubt influenced by our four demotions in the 2016/17 season. Nevertheless, we await anxiously the results from the Clubs WA award which will to be announced at their gala dinner on 17 June. Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff who have enabled the Club to be recognised as among the best in the State and thanks to the members who make Sorrento truly one of the best bowling Clubs around.

The “14 Game Format” and Challenge Cup

n the President’s absence overseas, and given recent discussion around the Club about our position to not support the Notice of Motion to be presented at the BowlsWA AGM on 29th July, it was decided to present his views to members. A full explanation is displayed around the Club. The following is a summary for members’ information.

His position does not so much relate to the decision to change the format in itself, rather the validity of the process that was used to arrive at that decision The “Fixtures and Events Committee” of Bowls WA was looking for a solution to address the continuing decline in pennant players which has halved since the 1990s; address complaints that the season is too long and therefore not attractive to younger potential players or people with health issues; and to reduce the number of pennant forfeits occurring after the Christmas break. They were also looking to try a shorter, more exciting format of the game; entice younger players to play who are time poor; and reduce travel, hence the Challenge Cup. Their recommendation for a fourteen week format with a Challenge Cup was supported by the Bowls WA Bowls Management Committee and then endorsed by the BowlsWA Board. Each of these bodies is made up of representatives elected or appointed from 13

bowling Clubs to represent the interests of bowling Clubs and each operate under a charter under the Bowls WA Constitution.

The proposal was progressively presented at five separate forums of bowling Club representatives including a number of President’s forums. A formal vote was never asked for but from the general mood and lack of complaint at these meetings, BowlsWA concluded that there was support for the new format from the majority of Clubs.

BowlsWA have given an undertaking that the format will be fully reviewed at the conclusion of the season and they will ensure that the review is comprehensive.

To overturn this decision at the BowlsWA AGM is by inference a vote of no confidence in the process that was used to arrive at the decision and/or the people involved. Our President is not inclined to support this move, rather to see how the season unfolds and make changes if necessary in the light of experience.

i All: Country Week was a roaring success. The great comments about our fantastic Club and the coldest beer in the West were amazing !! It was a top weekend in regard to turnover. Hats off to the volunteers Glenn and Trish McCarthy, Graeme May, Ron Taylor, Lindsay Baker and Brian Collins who helped me achieve yet another great result for the Club.

Women’s Captain’s Report

W

e have had a busy, and at times challenging 2016/17 season, which has produced some great successes for our women bowlers – a Saturday Pennant flag, 1Green North making the Grand Final of Tuesday Pennants and Marie Smart finishing top of the Skip ladder in her Tuesday Pennant division just to mention a few.

We have had new people join our bowling group and we have lost a few for a variety of reasons. I take the time here to mention the very sad passing of our dear friend, Jean Baker. Unfortunately, severe ill health took her from us far too soon and suddenly. Her smiling face on the bowling green, in the kitchen and at Wednesday Mahjong will be very sorely missed by us all.

Special congratulations need to go to Pauline Bourne, who, having won our Club Women’s Singles Championship for 2017, then went on to represent Sorrento in the State-run Champion of Champion Singles. In this event, the singles champions from 14

other Clubs around the State compete against each other to see who the champion of all of the champions might be. This year the title went to our Pauline who will now go to Darwin in October to represent the State, when the State Champion of Champions play off for the National Champion of Champions title. We wish Pauline all the best of luck for this exciting challenge.

This will be my last report as the Women’s Bowls Captain – for now anyway. I have held this position for four years and have decided that I need a bit of a break from committee work for at least a year. I have really enjoyed representing the women bowlers and the Club in general in all of the facets that this role has required. I have coordinated many successful events such as fashion parades, Club Opening Days, gala days, our prestigious Trevors Carpets Invitation Fours days, a second change of uniform shirt and now our new Club jackets and track pants. I am looking forward to working closely with the person who takes over this very important role from me.

I wish you all a very relaxing off-season and hope you will all return refreshed and eager for an exciting new 2017/18 season.

Trevors Carpets Women’s Invitation Fours

O

n 17 February 2017, the women in our Club ran our annual Women’s Invitation Fours sponsored very generously by Trevors Carpets. This prestigious event is open to Division 1 players only from Clubs around the state.

This event has now been supported by Trevors Carpets for six years and year by year the interest in the event has grown significantly to the point where 34 teams entered this year’s competition. Teams play three games of 11 ends with prize money being awarded for game winners, round winners and 3 overall placings, the major winners receiving $1000 for their efforts. Ray Green again added prizes for the first toucher – after a whistle is blown – on each green in each round plus free drinks at lunchtime and at the conclusion of the day’s play. It is Ray’s awesome generosity that makes this event such a draw card and enables us to attract a lot of teams without a lot of effort.

For this, we offer our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to Ray. Jan Cook and her intrepid band of usual helpers, rearranged tables, blew up balloons and decorated the hall in the Trevors Carpet black and yellow the evening before.

Wendy Saul and a small group of very hard-working ladies prepared all the wonderful food. Delicious ice cream was again donated by Kishore Dudhia from Wendy’s Garden City as the dessert provided on the day – thanks again to Kishore for his continued support.

Three raffles were held on the day as a small contribution to fund-raising and these were very handsomely supported by all in attendance. Thank you to those people who manned the raffles tables and also to those who donated items, particularly Vanessa from Aero Bowlsworld who is so generous in supporting our women’s major events.

The weather was perfect and the organisation on the Match side of the day was very ably coordinated by Charmain Harris and her team. Umpiring was provided by both men and women – thank you so much. Many compliments were received about how smoothly things ran, so great thanks to the Women’s Match Committee. The major games prizes were well shared around as were the raffle prizes. A team from North Beach took out the overall win having won all three games by significant margins.

Whilst this event is not considered one of the women’s major fund-raisers, like our Gala Day is, over $2300 profit was made which goes straight into the Club’s general funds.

So thank you to all of the people who helped out in any way with the running of this event – every little bit really helps and goes towards making the day such a success. We have earned a well-deserved reputation for putting on a professionally-run, prestigious but highly entertaining competition and many attendees have already requested being automatically included each year.

Men’s Match Committee Report Men’s Singles Congratulations to Chris Lander who captured the Club’s Men’s Singles Championship for the first time. Chris comfortably defeated Juris Lorencs in the final. A field of 47 bowlers competed, with John Collishaw (a previous singles title winner) and Lindsay Baker (a first-time semi-finalist) making it through to the semi-finals, only to be defeated by Chris and Juris respectively.

Men’s Triples Chris Lander also combined with Brian Kiely and Alan Walton to capture the Club triples title from Steve Mortimer, Warren Elliott and Greg Taylor in a close and exciting final. The result was in doubt until the last end.

Men’s Veteran’s Championship This event was won by Graeme Heard who beat Roland Hill in the final.

Father and Son This was a great success with Alan Walton teaming up with Snowy’s grandson, Mitchell Snow to win the event.

Jan Cook’s team of ladies excelled themselves again by providing both morning tea and a soup-and-a-roll lunch, with five (!!) different varieties of soup on offer. Thanks ladies.

Despite drawing their last game, the team of Ray Green, Brian Clausen, Barry Bradshaw and Bruce Eagles were the overall winners as the only team to have 3 ½ wins. Tony Kay’s rink of M Sharp, Fred Faigenbaum and John McGrath will regret losing their first game because they had a better shot differential than the winners but only 3 wins.

Winners are Grinners

O

n a gorgeous Autumn St. Patrick’s Day, four teams of very relaxed lady bowlers from Sorrento set off to the Wanneroo Bowling Club to play for the Wanneroo/ Joondalup Cup. The Cup involves six of the bowling Clubs in the shires of Wanneroo and Joondalup, the other five Clubs being Merriwa, Warwick, North Beach, Quinns Rock and Wanneroo.

They had few expectations of a win as the last time Sorrento had won this handicapped event was 2010 and usually the teams were made up of a fair spread of first and premier division players. This time, however, the teams had only one Premier player (Jackie Maxwell) and one First Division player (Moira Dean), the rest were Division Two and Three players. One team in fact could only make up 10 of the 14 maximum points. The teams were: • Moira Dean (Skip), Monique Kopec (3rd), Kay Martin (2nd) and Anna Wimbridge (Lead) • June Gregory (Skip), Jan Paniperis (3rd), Helen Ironside (2nd) and Beryl Tutt (Lead) • Jackie Maxwell (Skip), Cheryl Benn (3rd), Wendy Stobie (2nd) and Betty Stern (Lead) • Marie Smart (Skip), Cheryl Grieg (3rd), Shona Carter (2nd) and Helen Teasdale (Lead) 22

Therefore, it was a total surprise when, after a fabulous day of fun and friendship, Her Worship, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Wanneroo, Diane Guise, announced that Sorrento had beaten the hosts, Wanneroo, by the grand total of half a point!

You can imagine the jubilation – the place erupted in a sea of blue and gold ladies jumping up and down !! Well done girls – let’s hope we can make it two years in a row! PS: Thanks to Jackie Maxwell who took the above photograph.

Other Competitions

Women’s Veterans The Women’s Veterans Championship was undertaken by a large group of bowlers, who not only took each other on to take out this valued trophy, but also took on the weather! On what has been regarded a somewhat cooler summer, the day of this event was not only a bowling challenge, but also a challenging day of both high heat coupled with high humidity for the field to contend with. The finals were played in somewhat better conditions and we congratulate Annie Taylor on being the Veteran Champion for 2016/17. The runner-up, who also fought the good fight in this event was Judy Campbell. Congratulations ladies.

Women’s Triples This event was won by Nerrida Porteous, Fran Bracknell and Shirley Palmer who beat Kathy Gobbart, Sharon Eggers and Roz Newick in the finals Mixed Veterans Winners were Denise and Neville Odell with Ray Stapledon and Lorraine Hyde as runners up.

Undercover Bowling Green Facility Update

M

embers will recall that Sorrento Bowling Club was awarded a $17 850 City of Joondalup Sports Development Program grant in November 2016 to conduct a feasibility study to assess the viability of developing an undercover enclosed bowling facility on E-Green. This grant built upon earlier work undertaken by a group of members who felt a development of this nature was worth further investigation.

Independent consultants A Balanced View Leisure Consultancy Services (ABV) have now completed their feasibility study into the viability of the project, which has been submitted to the City of Joondalup and the grant has been acquitted.

ABV provided two estimated costs for the project, one at $737 350 for a steel structured roof and the second at $1.292 million for a membrane fabric roof (similar to those used in the Eastern States). A membrane structure such as that of Cabramatta is favoured because of the improved lighting that it provides over a steel structure and also because it will be more attractive to potential users and make a statement for the both the Club and the City of Joondalup.

ABV confirmed that provided the Club can secure two thirds of the funding through a Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grant, then the project is feasible. This would mean that members would need to agree at a Special General Meeting (through a 75% majority) for the Club to proceed and provide the remaining one third funding from whatever sources are available (bank loan, soft loan, debentures, commercial arrangements, chicken raffles etc.)

As previously mentioned, such a decision would represent a major investment by the Club and also present financial risk if it was to prove unsuccessful in operation. CSRFF funding is by no means easy to secure, particularly in today’s economic climate and could take several years. There remains much to do before we arrive at a decision point for members to consider.

Ahhh – Blissful Retirement

W

hen I asked Brian Lucas why he was stepping down from the Presidency last year he said that you can only sustain a high level of pressure for so long before you need a break. When President John Abercrombie invited Brian to stay on the Governing Council, as a Director for this term he perhaps didn’t realise what that meant. In a conversation that I had with Brian recently he told me about the past week in the role and what that involved. He said that he had: • Prepared and submitted two grants applications for funding for our Club • Worked on preparing the Club’s proposal for Clubs WA Club of the Year 2017 • Provided input into the newsletter • Done some work to update the Club’s strategic and operational plans • Signed up a couple of new sponsors • Met with the mayor and South Ward Counsellors • Liaised with the consultant preparing the feasibility study for the undercover bowls facility • Attended two meetings as part of his role as director with Bowls WA 28

“Miss is a Hit”

W

hen somebody mentions the name Miss Maud what is your first thought – pies, cakes, sausage rolls, coffee with the girls? Well my partner Jenny and I were lucky enough to win a meal voucher for the Miss Mauds restaurant, on the corner of Pier and Murray street in Perth, in last year’s Christmas raffle. So ourselves and two friends (Tommy and Cath Jefferson) hopped on the train to Perth one Saturday evening see what was on offer at the restaurant.

On arrival our first impression was the age of the building and how they had kept it maintained to its original look, when we walked inside we were greeted by a gentleman playing the acoustic guitar and performing songs even we knew the words too.

Our waitress , in her famous Miss Mauds uniform, showed us to our table, after taking our drinks order she turned and pointed to the food with the words “please enjoy’.

The array and presentation of food was of a 5 star hotel standard, seafood, cold meats, salads, dressings galore, cheeses to die for, different varieties of bread to please everyone, then there was the carvery, a choice of roast meats with all the trimmings not to mention the soups on offer. In many ways the walk from the table to the food was like a game of bowls, we must have gone up 21 times, with much expanded waist lines we sat back in our chairs and all agreed it was fantastic night, what was the highlight, well all being poms, we decided it was the cauliflower cheese. Would we go back? Only on a day with a y in it.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, my advice would be to book as it is very popular, music is on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

Greens and Grounds Report

T

he greens are still in good shape and rolling nicely thanks to Alan, Ron and the volunteers. C green is slow coming back in and unfortunately the worms have returned to C and D green which doesn’t help the mowers or the rollers. The Thumbs Up Club and other volunteers, as usual, have the garden and grounds looking great.

The Club hosted the Masters Builders recently for their national bowls competition and it was considered a great success. Alan and his crew worked hard the whole week and therefore we received positive feedback on how good our greens were each day.

The weather was kind and one of the bowlers was heard to comment, “If the conditions are like this in winter then it must be great to play here in summer”.

Enjoy the greens, take care when you’re on them and we will all enjoy a great winter of bowls.

Men’s Pennant Report

T

he 2016/17 season was quite demanding for the Club with the ramifications of the proposed structure for the 2017/18 season. With the competition changing to eight teams in each division, avoiding relegation became very relevant. Unfortunately, two teams in the midweek and the Saturday competitions have been relegated. Considering how cut throat survival had become especially in the 3rd Division although disappointing the relegations were, overall, we should be pleased with our overall achievement.

On Saturday our 1Blue and 3Blue finished on top and in the midweek competition, 3Blue 2 finished on top and our 1White side finished a very credible third. Unfortunately no side achieved promotion which in most divisions was not automatic.

Again, the Club ran a very successful Pennant presentation and awards night at the end of the season. To Ross and Trish Cunningham thank you for again catering the event and to Ian Lucas and the rest of the bar staff thank you for your support on the night.

Women’s Pennant Report

O

ur Pennant season ended up with some good results. 1 Red Saturday won the flag from Leeming which was a great effort. 3 Violet had some great results but didn’t do so well but enjoyed their season .

Tuesday Pennants was also rewarding with Premier finishing second. They played Osborne Park who they beat then Mosman Park who they lost to so they reached the semi final . 1 Green North finished second. They played Dalkeith Nedlands at North Beach then played North Beach at Mt. Lawley who they beat so ended up winners for 1 Green North. Then they had to play 1 Green South who was Leeming but they lost.

2 Blue who was on top all year ended up playing a Challenge Club game with Quinn’s Rock but unfortunately lost. Apologies to 2 Green and 3 Green who had players taken from them all season because of shortage of players. In spite of sickness and people going away they had a successful season Special thanks to: • Our valuable reserves – I thank you for helping us out so much we couldn’t have managed without you. To Kevin Scammell and Terry Parker who each played a game for us – thank you it was much appreciated .

1st Division Red Bring Home the Flag.

T

he season started well with our first game against Leeming resulting in a four point win. This started us off at the top of the ladder with a percentage slightly higher than Manning 1.

As the weeks progressed it became a game of cat and mouse between Sorrento and Manning 1 as to which Club would be on top. Our first loss came against Mundaring, in round 5 and the following week another loss against North Beach. This left Sorrento in 2nd position on the ladder for the rest of the season although only 2 points behind Manning 1 after the last home and away game.

With Manning ranking first on the ladder the finals games were hosted on their greens. Top four teams being Manning 1, Sorrento, Gosnells and Leeming in that order.

Semi-finals were Manning 1 against Leeming and Sorrento against Gosnells. Leeming defeated Manning 1 to progress in the semifinals – this was rather unexpected and Sorrento defeated Gosnells to play off against Leeming in the Grand Final.

It certainly was a GRAND FINAL for the Sorrento Ladies with both teams beating their Leeming opponents with an aggregate score of 36-29 giving us a four point win to enable us to bring back the Pennant Flag to our Sorrento Club. We had a spectacular season, some great bowling by all, and a fantastic achievement by all the ladies in Sorrento’s Saturday Division 1 Red. – Lee Leach 33

Jan’s Famous Broccoli Salad

number of members have asked that we publish Jan Cook’s recipe for a broccoli salad. All you need are: • 2 bunches broccoli, • 3-4 sticks of celery, • 3-4 shallots, • 1 cup of toasted sunflower seeds and • 2-4 bacon rashers (oven roasted ) Chop all finely. Add dressing of one cup miracle whip, one and a half teaspoons white vinegar and two dessertspoons of sugar.

Umpires’ Corner

irst of all thanks to umpires, Gavan Ebsworth, Derry Ellis, Ray Slimper and Sharon Eggers who gave their time and effort to officiate at the Masters Builders National Competition recently hosted by Sorrento.

The competition featured teams from most states and as often happens with players from interstate it produced a couple of unusual situations regarding the Laws which I had not previously come across.

One situation involved a player placing the mat behind and just touching the T. The opponents objected saying that the front of the mat must completely cover the line of the T which in this case was still partially visible (being several millimetres wide). What is the rule? The Laws make no reference to the use of the T but simply states the mat line (front of the mat) must be at least 2 metres from the ditch. The use of T’s marked on the green is optional and is only there to indicate the 2 metre distance. As an umpire I would (baring pulling out a tape measure) accept the mat just touching the T. In another situation a player came up to me after his game had finished complaining that an opposing player continually stood a metre behind the mat when he was delivering his bowl (gamesmanship?). This was causing him some distraction and annoyance as he was using an artificial bowler’s arm which needed extra space behind. When he protested the opponent claimed he was in compliance with the Laws which states that players not on the mat must be at least 1 metre behind the mat, which he was. The player felt there was nothing he could do about his opponent. Not so. There is another law that states that players in possession of the rink must not be interfered with, annoyed or distracted in any way by their opponents. The player should have taken the matter up with his Skipper who, if unable to resolve the matter with the opposing Skipper, can call an umpire.

Croquet Corner News Competition News The April Fool’s Day Tournament (Golf Croquet) Inter-Club tournament coincided with 1 April and hence its title! However, it was a serious tournament that attracted entries from Como, Gosnells, Moorabinda and Sorrento Croquet Club, who fielded two teams – Trish and Judith Skeet; and Terry Harvey with Di McGivern. The feedback from the other Clubs was very positive and encouraging indeed. Each team played every other team with a total of five games being played by each pair. The day’s play was followed by drinks and snacks with prize-giving in the Club – catered by croquet volunteers to whom we were all very grateful. The tournament was won by Di and Terry who won all five of their games; runners-up were Maggie Cussell and Terry Brown, who won three of their five games. Ex-members Peter and Kathy Hamilton won two games to come third. A great day was had by all!!

Platinum Day The annual Platinum Day, organised by the City of Joondalup for residents of 50 years and over, was held the 6 April. This year 50 to 55 visitors who were all new to the Club attended. The group splits into two sub-groups one of which plays bowls for a couple of hours, enjoys a tea-break and then plays croquet for the same length of time. The second group plays croquet first followed by bowls in the same time slots. Each of the sports fields their own volunteers to assist the new players in learning to play.

The Croquet section is delighted with the outcome of this event which resulted in two new enrolments into our section. We warmly welcome these new members, Poh-Choo Ng (known as “PC”) and Janet Fuller. These ladies are also being great ambassadors for the Club by bringing along friends and neighbours.

A service in Jean’s honour was held at Pinnaroo Park on Thursday 1 June; and was attended by members of both the Croquet and the Bowling Club. Jean was a keen bowler at the Club and will be sadly missed by all.

Welfare We have had news that Kath Braybrook, an inaugural member of the Croquet section, and who is now over 95 years of age, has recently suffered a stroke. We send our thoughts, prayers and best wishes to Kath and her family at this difficult time. Also, our best wishes for a rapid return to good health are conveyed to Terry Harvey, who has commenced treatment for a cancer that was recently diagnosed.

Grant from City of Joondalup The Grant from the City of Joondalup to try to promote the sport of croquet with particular focus on encouraging school-aged members to take up this mallet sport has disappointingly not been at all successful. We contacted seven schools as a start to the program, but have had no positive responses from any of these schools. We have decided that our next attempts with schools will need to be with the upper levels of Primary Schools. We ask, again, if any member has personal contacts with any schools in the area, please let the croquet section members know – we need all the help we can get!! We have had to make a negative report to the City of Joondalup when the time line expired at the end of June.

City of Joondalup Sports Clubs Appreciation Dinner Brian Lucas, Di McGivern, and Judith Skeet were invited to attend this function held at the City of Joondalup Civic centre in April. Judith and Di had the opportunity to discuss the future prospects of encouraging primary school students to take up this sport, with Cr. Christine Hamilton-Prime who had planned to meet with several of the School Principals and support our efforts. A follow up meeting with Christine has been arranged.

Applying the Rules of Golf Croquet # 4 (Answers on Page 57) 1. In a handicap doubles game, the striker of Red, who is entitled to take extra turns declares that he will take an extra shot, but then changes his mind and says that he will not take the extra turn after all. His partner (Yellow) has a word with the striker, who now says “Sorry, but I will take an extra turn.” Is he allowed to take the extra turn?

2. In a handicap game, the score is 6-all. The blue ball is played and goes over the boundary line directly in line with Hoop 13. The red ball is played and also crosses the boundary line, slightly to one side of blue. The striker of red decides to take an extra turn and knocks the blue ball away to a side boundary, leaving his own ball in line with Hoop 13. How would a referee rule on this play?

3. At the start of a doubles game, the owner of blue plays blue into the court and then the owner of yellow plays his ball in. The owner of blue says that yellow has been played out of sequence. How is this situation resolved?

“An Amazing Find!”

I

n 1959, age 22 years, I left Scotland to join the Navy, later migrating to South Africa and working on construction sites. Whilst there, I sent letters home but received no replies! My mother had died in 1958 (aged 44); and although my father had written, none of his letters ever reached me. I gave up hope of making contact with my family and past life; and made a new one in Rhodesia where I married Diana. Over the years more unsuccessful attempts were made to contact my family. A friend in England twice tried to find my family for us but without success.

In 2015 she tried again and eventually came across a name “McGivern-McClure, H.E.” and called me to ask if this entry meant anything to me! I gasped before declaring that my youngest brother, who was 8 years old when I left Scotland, was named Henry Elliott McClure McGivern!” The link was made!! I called the mobile number and the following conversation was had with a broadly Scottish-accented man: Me: He: Me: He:

“Hello, is that Henry?”

“Noo, it’s Harry!” (He had changed his name) “Harry, this is Chuck, Charles, Charlie (what name would he remember best?)

“Ooh, Charlie, it’s been a long while since we heerd from ye!”

This was the understatement of the century!!! It had been 57 years since he had heard from me!! My “baby” sister (a 3 year old when I left) and Harry, (who flew from Glasgow to London to meet me) were at Heathrow to welcome me back!! Later, we all flew up to Glasgow, where the four brothers still live. For the first time in 57 years the six siblings were all in one place at the same time – what a miracle meeting!! We spent 10 days in Glasgow getting to know the long-lost family! I discovered that my father had asked the Salvation Army to try to locate me worldwide, but they, too, failed to find me and I was pronounced “missing, presumed dead”!

Since then, two siblings have visited me in Perth and in August this year, we will return to Glasgow for another 10-day visit (before I get too old to travel) to try to meet more members of the extended family. We have learnt that one must “Never give up hope or effort to get what you want most!”

Bowls Welfare Report • The passing of Jean Baker on the 23 May was very sad but a great number of SBC members, family and friends turned up for the funeral on Thursday 1st June. I believe there was over one hundred and many had to stand.

• I met up with May Leyland at Jean’s funeral and she is doing well, Bill is also doing well apart from having Grout in the foot.

• I was told that Graham Whitehorn was not well and called and spoke to his wife on the 5th May, she said he had a cold but was coming good. Graham was at Jean’s funeral and was fine.

• Eric Tompkins was sent to Joondalup Hospital in early May with fluid in the lungs, I visited him early in May and he was positive about going home the next day, which he did. He is walking around with a walking around with a walking frame and looking forward to getting back to bowls.

• I was recently told that Denis O’Brien was not well and I called him early in May and spoke to Barbara, she said he had had a heart attack but was starting to come good and was out walking the dog. I called Denis again yesterday, 7th June and he said he had recovered from the heart attack and is looking forward to getting back to bowls.

• I called John Godfrey in the middle of May and spoke to his wife and she said he was recently diagnosed with early stage Bowl Cancer and was in hospital and that the surgeon was sure it had all been removed. John is now at home and was hoping to get back to bowls soon.

• I spoke to Stan McCullagh early in June, he is still on oxygen but was losing energy.

• Had a chat with Fran Bracknell at Jean Baker’s funeral and Roy is doing OK. • I spoke to Jean Middleditch early in June and she will be seeing the Oncologist tomorrow the 8th June and was hoping for a good report.

1. He has been bowling for 14 years and still doesn’t know how to draw. He knows how to elutriate sunflower seed husks, work out the productivity of an ice-cream freezer, disinfect an epidiascope and refine glycerine for the manufacture of dynamite. Has some interesting stories about panti-hose and popping roll-on balls.

2. This member lived in Belfast, not the one in Ireland, for 12 years. She has been a “Bowler of the Year”. Loves doing jig-saw puzzles, cryptic crosswords and “Killer” Sudokus. Was a good tennis player in her youth. Recently celebrated a Golden Wedding Anniversary. Is now a Regional Master at bridge and is married to the person in number one above.

3. He is lean and tall and enjoys food. He likes things green especially grass. Married with three children and four granddaughters. His Irish father-in-law accompanied him on his honeymoon in 1968. Was a surf life saver and squash player but now, because of aging legs, is restricted to playing bowls and bridge. Like to ride a bike to bowls.

4. This member arrived in Australia on a “10-Pound POM visa” but is not British.

Apparently you could be a 10-pound POM even if you are Dutch. He married a girl from the bush and now has nine grandchildren. Writes right handed but played cricket left-handed. A good right handed lawn bowler with aspirations to become a Skipper. Works part time for Woolworths.

He served overseas in the army, played football in front of 25000 spectators at Subiaco Oval, played snooker against Eddie Charlton (Australian Champion), golf against John Muller (Amateur Champion) and has won 25 Club Championship events and was rated in top 30 State bowlers. Was a Club Champion at the Bayswater Bowling Club in 1987/88/89 and 1997 and 1999. Not normally the first to finish a game of bowls as he likes to follow his bowl to the head. Had red hair in his youth and he tells me he has been a member of only 11 bowling Clubs.

6. An accomplished diver and gymnast and then a fine tennis player and now an aspiring bowler. She was born and educated in Melbourne, became the school captain and then trained as a nurse in various operating theatres working with some of the best surgeons in Australia. Lived and worked in England and has toured Russia, Croatia, China, Africa, Asia, USA and New Zealand. Eventually settled and married in Perth. Her passion for charity work and her sewing skills allow her to travel in pursuit of that passion. An incredibly kind person. She has to shout at her husband.

7. Has been a member for six years and has risen very rapidly through the bowling ranks due to his exceptional skill as a sportsman. He claims to be a very humble type! He gets along with most people as long as they are not Leads, Thirds or Skips.

He enjoys Pennants, does volunteer work around our Club. He prefers the company of anyone that will buy him a beer. Has been known to kick a footy and silly enough to take on that little white ball that prefers to live in the bush. Has a shortened intestine. Please don’t ask him for an autograph as he embarrasses easily’ 8. This very efficient Payroll Controller once tried her hand at bowls. She took some lessons with Graeme Heard, who shook his head in despair as both the jack and the bowl went all over the greens. You could hear his sigh of relief when she took up croquet instead. After five plus years playing croquet, sometimes she can take a hoop. Has a husband who normally has a smile on his dial and never seems to get upset.

9. Has been bowling for 19 years. Born in the WA Goldfields. Only bowler in the Club to use “International” bowls and therefore takes plenty of grass. Has recently changed to a narrower bowl. Has hiked the Grand Canyon and cycled over 1000 km around England. Normally the first to finish a game of bowls. Married to a lovely and very efficient lady who will sort you out if you need an x-ray or scan!

10. Born and married in Perth and has been a member for 11 years. Supports all aspects of our Club especially the Croquet section. Aimed to travel after completing her education but travelled as far as Sydney before falling in love on a “blind” date.

Has three children and two lovely granddaughters. Enjoys serving on committees.

Known for her love of her garden which brings her peace and happiness. Also loves dogs but ended up with a cat but fortunately the cat behaves like a dog.

11. His eight grandchildren are 8th generation Australians, ancestors of Nathaniel who after an unfair trial, was transported from England to arrive at Botany Bay in 1788. He likes fishing in exotic places. Worked at the Commonwealth Bank before he became a senior public servant for a 40 year career before retiring to take up work part-time in 2004. He is now playing in his 52nd competitive season in one of his chosen sports. He has won five Club Fours Championships and one Club Pairs and a Bowler of the Year. He has something in common with one of the Batman Movie characters. Very efficient and clear thinking. Has the ability to make things happen and has done so much for our Club. Worth his weight in gold.

12. An Aussie through and through, but with a Greek connection. She has been bowling for six years. Has lived and worked in the UK (under the dictator Maggie Thatcher), Romania (under the dictator Nicholai Ceausescu) and Greece (under the dictator Giorgios Papadopoulos). Has travelled to over 25 countries, worked with animals of various types, both dead and alive, at the WA Museum, travelled the world with politicians, almost caused an international incident in the Lebanon, and now bowls and travels as much as her dog will allow. Very good at proof-reading documents and fixing your editor’s spelling mistakes and bad grammar.

13. This tall and handsome member was born in NSW and moved to Perth in 1990.

Has been a member of Sorrento for about 10 years. Has owned well-used passports.

Has a license to drive a Gopher in times of distress. Despite usually playing Second, has been known to use a pen for other purposes. In a recent 2x4x2 match on a Saturday managed to touch the kitty with four consecutive bowls (witnesses available) and is partial to a drop of Kilkenny.

14 This member was born in 1937 in Kalgoorlie and started work as a telegram boy with the then Australian Government Postmaster-General’s Department. As a result of hard work and study eventually retired as Customer Services Manager CBD Perth. He took up bowls in 1971 after damaging his “Anterior Cruciate Ligament” playing cricket. Joining Sorrento in 1992 was one of the first of three Skippers to win a First Division Premiership in 1995/96. Now happily playing 3rd Division and helping out with various jobs around the Club which he has been doing for 25 years.

Is partial to a glass or two of the best red. Knows a lot about bowls so if you want advice chat to this member.

15. This member grew up in Scarborough very close to the beach where she spent most of her free time as a blue eyed blonde surfie chick. She played State schoolgirls 41

hockey whilst at Churchlands High School. She married at eighteen and moved to the far north where she lived for ten years and played all sports as you tend to do in country towns. On returning to Perth she and her husband settled in Duncraig.

Played Pennant squash with a few ladies who now bowl at Sorrento. She has been bowling for six years and has been known to be a bit competitive. If you have a crack at her you can expect a quick response with a bit of interest. She loves our Club and could not think of a better Club to be a member. She has five grandsons spread across the country and enjoys regular trips east.

The Blue Water First Division started the year off very well with some good wins against very stiff competition with only three losses.

Progressive first division team average is 56.51 - including individual averages of Buck Rogers 61.49, Glen Holman 60.68, Phil Webb 59.59, Tony Kay 59.44, Brian Lucas 58.42, Doug Lorencs 54.40, Juris Lorencs 47.42 and Brian Collins 45.18 The Sports And Bowling Club Divisions averages were not available when this report was written but will be available on the Darts notice board soon.

Brownlow Trophy for 2016/17 Season

T

he counting of votes for the Brownlow Trophy was held at the Club on Monday 10 April 2017. This award is for the best player in the Saturday top Division team and votes are cast by each player for other members in the rink. The awarding of this trophy commenced in the 2001/02 season and has seen multiple winners since its inception.

The format of the presentation was changed this year to include members of the Club’s Executive and Selection Committee and a talk by Clive Adams who is one of the top 42

bowlers in WA, including representing the State and playing his 200th State game this year. Clive provided positive comments in relation to the directions the Club is taking and provided some tips to assist players in the Division to strive to greater heights.

Additionally Bruce Eagles interviewed Shane Rixom and Patrick Murray discussing their experience of joining a new Club and playing in the top team in the Club. Again this provided positive comments about the culture of the Club and the way in which younger and older members can interact with each other effectively.

This season 21 players were used in the Division and 15 players played sufficient games to be able to win the Trophy – the largest number since the start and with the Division winning 15 of their 18 games, it led to an interesting count.

After 12 games, Tim Murray led the count with 119.5 votes followed by Chris Lander and Rick Munt on 114.5, Bruce Eagles on 109.5 and Ron Rogers on 109 votes. After 15 games, Tim had opened up a lead of 9.5 votes but a number of players started to poll well to make the calling of the final 3 games very interesting. After the 15th game, Tim was on 153.5, Chris on 144, Patrick Murray on 140.5, and Geoff Murray on 138.5.

Chris Lander continued his great form scoring well over the concluding games to shoot to the lead and be announced as the winner of the 2016/17 Brownlow trophy. Tim Murray also had a great year finishing second and Geoff Murray finished the season off in great style getting up to finish third. The final scores were as follows: Chris Lander 180 votes Tim Murray 173.5 votes Geoff Murray 172.5 votes Bruce Eagles 171.5 votes.

The players also selected their “Team of the Year” after considering a number of factors in addition to their bowling skills.

The Lost Treasures of Our Club

A

s early as the Dark Ages, as tribes evolved they adopted or lost parts of their new founded organisation. Sometimes this happened to satisfy costs or needs of their tribe. This is the story of one such lost treasure sadly taken from the members, but never forgotten.

In the beginning there was only sand and salt water in a Northern suburban area when a group of enthusiastic lawn bowlers banded together and developed a bowling Club that they named “Sorrento Bowling Club”. Unfortunately it was based in the suburb of Duncraig. And so we became the SBC and not the DBC! Not to be dismayed, this group continued to develop the Club whilst encouraging the Tennis Club and Soccer Club to use the same name. In the 1970s things were not as advanced as they are today.

As our Club developed further various rituals were introduced and were enthusiastically embraced by the members One popular ritual was the presentation of the “POTS” to the Pennant team that scored the highest winning margin. The members of that team were presented with a PINT of beer of their choice after the match and the Pennant players applauded this magnificent achievement – AND SO THE POTS WAS BORN. To further enhance the acknowledgement of their deed the Club purchased Pint glasses with the engraving of POTS on the side of the glass and these were used by winners and returned to the bar for use by next week’s winners. In the meantime the winners would saunter around the Club holding up their Pot so everyone would notice them and know who was important amongst the Pennant players.

Time, however, is a great degrader of rituals and eventually the pint drink was replaced by a schooner of beer and the pots glasses put in the trophy cabinet for safe keeping. The schooner, however, was replaced by a middy of beer (except Kilkenny, which costs 30 cents more, “ far too expensive”) and players stopped doing the “boasting walk” 44

around the Club rooms. Only time will tell if the middy eventually becomes a pony (except Kilkenny) – AND SO A TREASURE OF THE SORRENTO Club IS LOST – Richard Currie

“Loafing” is not on Jan’s List!

U

nlike the Little Red Hen, Jan Cook hasn’t had to battle the likes of the lazy dog, sleepy cat and noisy yellow duck since becoming Sorrento’s events coordinator.

While the Little Red Hen got no assistance whatsoever from that trio of dastardly malcontents, Jan, along with her trusty lieutenant Jenni Lockwood, has had nothing but support from an enthusiastic army of Sorrento volunteers.

The result has been that when deadline time comes for Jan’s many and varied projects, things run like clockwork. With sleeves always enthusiastically rolled up these volunteers, probably without realizing it, are the backbone of our Club and the prime reason the overall culture at Sorrento is regarded as relaxed and enjoyable.

But from her early days growing up in Collie, Jan became aware of the benefits to be gained from a solid community spirit. They were the days when a young bloke named Ray Green, also a classmate of Jan’s, used to ride around Collie on his push-bike delivering telegrams.

Jan went on to become a nurse and remarkably, half a century later, she was on hand at the Sorrento Bowling Club to treat Ray when he got the staggers and had to withdraw from his Novice Singles grand final match against Al Walton.

But you would be sadly mistaken if you thought Jan’s sporting prowess lay purely with bowls. Hockey was originally Jan’s game but after she met and married Kevin in Albany, she switched to soft ball and played and umpired for many seasons. Never one to be left on the sidelines, Kevin got hooked as well and coached the team.

On moving to the Pilbara Jan and Kevin continued their formidable soft ball partnership in Goldsworthy and Port Hedland, with Kevin becoming Club President while still coaching his highly successful wife, who by that stage had also gained her Grade Two State Umpiring badge. Not surprisingly, Jan then joined Kevin, already a keen golfer, and took to that sport like a duck to water, playing in such events as the Ladies Pilbara Open Championship.

On moving back to the city, Jan played Pennant golf with Lakelands but in 2008 she and Kevin fortunately decided to join forces with the Sorrento Bowling Club.

Never one to watch from the sidelines, this busy grandmother of eight served a lengthy spell on the selection committee, including its chairman, before resigning to become the Club’s Events Coordinator. If she didn’t have her eyes wide open then she certainly does now with major events such as the Club’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Christmas in July, Saint Pat’s Day, AFL grand finals, Melbourne Cups, and a host of special gourmet and musical nights to organize.

The tasks that need fulfilling in order to make these events successful are many and varied with not too many of them being classified as glamourous. Of course, two of the most popular contributors, purely because of what they do, are Club caterers Trish and Ross Cunningham.

But Jan relies on so many more people to make things tick, like a neighbour Clive Barnard who does her poster designs, event ticket designer Sharon Eggers and Pauline Marsden, who informs Club members of what is going on and coming up. Then there are those who are handy with needle and thread and who made all the white table cloths – Robyn Woodward, Glen Larcombe, Jenni Lockwood, Maureen Green, Lorraine Hyde, Fran Bracknell and Jan Hollick. These table cloths are hired out for various functions, generating valuable income for our Club, while Ray Green has paid for black cloth for more covers to be made.

After each event there are also several willing ladies like Emily Dunn, Denise Odell and Charmain Harris who wash and iron all the tablecloths and get them ready for the next function.

Then, if you ever wondered why the decorations look so good at Club functions you have the likes of Jenni Lockwood, Carmel and Lorraine Hyde, Coral Smith, Wendy Saul, Pauline Bourne, Lee Leach, Shelley Jeffs, Roz Newick, Sharon Eggers, Kath Harris and Liz Marshall to thank.

No function could be held without the booked tables being in the right place but with Kevin Cook, Kevin Coffey, Ian Lucas and Tony Bourne on the job --- no problem.

And Brian Collins takes great pride in his role of Arch Designer at the entrance.

There are also plenty more unsung heroes, men included, who attend to the tedious chores, right down to the washing up.

So, with help like that, how dearly would the Little Red Hen loved to have had Jan Cook’s mob on hand when she set out to bake that much celebrated loaf of bread?

47 – Jim Woodward

Tribute to Jean Baker 1939-2017

O

ur dear friend Jean Baker was born in Collie, the eldest of seven children, and this is where she worked and met her husband, Vince. They had two children, a son, Keiran, and a daughter, Nicole. She also had a granddaughter who she loved dearly. Although they moved to Perth, Jean and Vince always had close ties to Collie and kept in touch with their families.

Jean was a very active lady becoming involved with the Red Cross. She worked at the shop in Wellington Street and later moved to the shop in Duncraig. She started a morning walking group for anyone who enjoyed walking and I believe they did a long walk every morning around Carine Park, finishing with a deserved cuppa and biscuits. To my knowledge this group still meet regularly.

Vince worked for the Railways and he volunteered, with Jean, to operate the week-end train at Dwellingup. On a Saturday evening one could travel on the train with fine dining and see a murder mystery at the local Dwellingup theatre afterwards. This was great fun and enjoyed by many.

Then Jean joined our Bowling Club and had so much fun playing Social and Pennant bowls, as well as enjoying Gala Days on a Friday.

She was one of our valued volunteers working in the kitchen, doing sandwiches and also took on the task of being the Welfare Officer.

She did a great job in this roll keeping in touch with members who were not well and sending out get well cards or sympathy cards. She also joined Probus which she really enjoyed.

Jean was such a lovely lady and she fought her illness very bravely. She will be sadly missed by all her friends at Sorrento. Rest in peace, Jean. – Jean Middleditch Message from Vince Baker Vince, Nicole and Keiran Baker as a family were quite overwhelmed by the support, messages of condolence, flowers and attendance at Jean’s funeral service. Attendance 48

at the funeral service particularly by so many Bowlers showed us how much her friends at the Club appreciated her companionship as much as us. We are sorry that there are too many to thank personally so trust you will all take this as a very warm and sincere thank you from the Bakers.

CHASE the JOKER – $5000 Winner

O

n Friday 5 May after 36 draws the “JOKER” Jackpot was won by Sharon Eggers.

Sharon buys two ‘stars’ every week. Congratulations Sharon.

The large crowd gathered were very vocal is showing their support for your win. Well done. However, there is a story behind how Sharon had the two ‘Stars’ (65 Joker winner and 47 - $10 winner) that night.

An unnamed member who I’m told has these numbers regularly had accidentally taken the Stars home and returned them to the Club mid-week and they were loose in the container. The regular patron had given up on the numbers!!!

Sharon’s purchased the two Stars. Not only did 65 come up as the ‘Joker Draw’ but 47 won a $10 bonus draw. And No Sharon did not win Lotto on the following weekend!

The Joker starts at $1500 and is probably the highest starting prize in any venue in Perth. Not a bad claim for a Bowling Club.

The Joker does make money for our Club – but each week there are “Bonus” draws to give a something back to the members.

This new round is a MEMBERS ONLY DRAW. Meaning it is ONLY open to Sorrento members – Full / Recreational and Social. Regular guests are encouraged to become Social members ($25) if they wish to participate.

Two new boards were set up to go forward. To ensure security of the card system 8 members were involved in the setup.

I hope ALL members continue to support Friday night Raffles, Joker draw and the Kitchen which generate a lot of fun and interest for all. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Club on Friday night.

Personalities of Bowlers

W

eird thing is its true – people play to their personality – it’s the ones that don’t do this that are better off, as how can your personality truly determine the best shot to play. We have the: THE GAMBLER A risk taker. Likes a punt in the real world and isn’t scared to do so on the green either.

If you have one of these as your Skipper, expect the bowls to be flying everywhere.

Big losses and big wins can happen, but if there is an opportunity to have a go, they will.

THE ANALYTICAL ONE Wants to know every last detail of the shot they are about to play. How far away was I? Which edge of the bowl do I need to hit? How much weight do I need to play? Show me the path of the bowl?

THE CONSERVATIVE ONE Always fears the worst in terms of the shot to play. Better to draw the shot and be safe, than play a risky shot that could go sour. Often find good leads are quite conservative in nature.

THE TECHNICAL Will always be trying to find out WHY things don’t quite turn out right. Was it the way I let the bowl go? What angle was I on? Can sometimes over think a situation, but also could be good with reasoning.

THE CROWD PLEASER Would rather play the adventurous, flashy shot than the boring reliable shot. Often goes against the percentages in favour of the highlight moment. On a good day this can work great and can demoralise an opposition, but watch out when it doesn’t go to plan. Similar to “The Gambler”.

THE SWITCHED ON Makes good decisions based on the situation in the game. Is very aware of the aggregate and plays accordingly. Thinks a few moves ahead, and has the opposition in mind when determining the shots to play.

THE OLD STYLE This personality loves the wide hand and believes that the swinging, drawing bowl is the way to go.

THE NEGATIVE NED/NELLIE There’s always a reason why the bowl didn’t go where it should’ve, and it’s very rarely the player themselves. It’s the wind, the green, the bump that you hit or didn’t hit.

THE TALKER Wants to provide every last detail of everything that has either happened or could happen in a game or head situation. As a Third, this person could have issues communicating with the skipper.

THE DIRECT Just tell me how it is, what you want and let me go about doing it. I don’t need all the other information.

THE OWN WORST ENEMY Run themselves down and generally look for what’s going wrong. Use the time they have between bowls to further re-inforce the negative thoughts.

THE LONER Happy in their own mind. If they play a bad one, they don’t need telling – they can walk away, re group and come back to play another bowl. These people don’t need heaps of communication.

Our Volunteer Appreciation Evening

T

he Club was pleased to recognise the tremendous efforts and contribution of our many volunteers with a Volunteers Thank You Night held on 10 May 2017. The event took place during National Volunteers Week and we would like to acknowledge the support for the event that we received from Volunteering WA. At the event, our President John Abercrombie thanked the hundreds of Club volunteers who freely give of their time and energies to support our Club and make it the success that it is today. He acknowledged and thanked all those volunteers who were present to celebrate; those that could not make it; and those who sadly are no longer with us. He reminded us that in the past twelve months over 100 volunteers had contributed 18 000 hours valued at $540 000 to our Club.

John highlighted the tremendous variety and scope in the work that our volunteers undertake, with roles and tasks as varied as being our Volunteer Coordinator; serving on the Governing Council; participating on Bowls WA committees and as delegates; participating on sporting committees such as management (including our Bowls, Croquet and Darts captains); Match and Selection committees and those who donate their time as Umpires, Markers and Coaches; members who run and support social and Club events, like our review nights, Melbourne Cup, fashion parades, Gala and charity days; those who work behind the bar and on the Greens and surrounds, including members of the Thumbs Up Club; members who regularly maintain our premises and fix things that are broken or in need of repair; make sandwiches for Pennants and State Events, make soup, organise morning teas; polish trophies, organise library books, clean windows; run our Club raffles and Chase the Joker and on Pennant days barbecue cooking and cleaning; co-ordinate Community Bowls; look after social groups playing bowls; and so much more.

John also thanked our volunteers who work behind the scenes, rarely observed by members, undertaking such tasks as managing our membership; recruiting and looking after our Sponsors; maintaining our website; overseeing room and event bookings; reconciling and banking revenues; maintaining Facebook; looking after member welfare; producing our Club’s excellent newsletters; undertaking audits for OH&S, risk management and compliance; applying for grants; preparing submissions for Club of the Year and hundreds of other general Club duties.

Even with our high numbers of volunteers, which incidentally other clubs can only dream of, we still need more – whether that is for an hour here and there or something more substantial. he twenty third annual Silver Chain fund raising event, organised by the Sorrento Bowling Club, was held on Friday 31 March. It was a beautiful day for bowling and forty five members participated and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The raffle, together with a percentage of the days green fees, and including all money normally set aside as prizes for the days winning team members, raised a total of $909 on the day, increasing the total Club members have donated to Silver Chain over the twenty three years this event has been running to an impressive $30576.

Club members can feel proud of this significant contribution to a very worth while organisation.

The event is called the Walley Smith Silver Chain Charity Day in memory of an earlier long term club member who was receiving care from Silver Chain when he suggested the inclusion of this event in our Clubs annual programme.

A number of Sorrento bowlers or their family members are currently enjoying Silver Chain care.

Many Club members helped with the days event including Stan Wood and Barbara Spence who arranged the bowling teams. Stan also donated a number of items to be raffled and announced the names of the numerous prize winners as raffle tickets were drawn.

Sylvia McLaughlan who spent two weeks visiting restaurants and other business houses in the Sorrento vicinity and raised an incredible total of thirty four vouchers and other items to be raffled. One restaurant alone, The Harbour Terrace Bar & Grill, gave her five $50 vouchers totalling $250.

Many Club members embraced the day either by themselves donating items to be raffled, collecting items from corporate sponsors or selling raffle tickets. They included Mary Cressey, Wendy Stobie, Kerry Sjepcevich, Pat Duffy, Annie Taylor, Monique Kopec, Joy Hennessy ($50 voucher) .

Sincere apologies to any member who has assisted in any way and been inadvertently not included in this list.

Answers to “Applying the Rules of Golf Croquet” 1. The striker is not allowed to take the extra turn in these circumstances. The first decision not to take the turn is allowed, but a further withdrawal of that decision is not allowed. [Rule 16(f)].

2. The play would not be allowed as the blue ball was an “outside agency” at the time and cannot be knocked away from the point at which it left the court. [Rule 6(g)].

3. Yellow remains an “outside agency” until all four balls have been played into the game. Thus no fault is made and the yellow ball is simply returned to the starting corner and red plays into the game. [Rule 5(f)].

Black and White Awards Dinner “WOW!” was the opening comment by our Club President, John Abercrombie, who opened proceedings for this prestigious event. He was of course referring to the amazing table settings presented by and conceived by our Events Committee headed by our very own, Jan Cook. She never fails to impress. The ambience created was fit for a stylish wedding feast, white chair covers with black bows and mega cocktail glasses filled with white orchids which complemented her usual beautiful table arrangement.

Wow indeed! Add to that the dapper dressed guys and fabulous frocked fillies; a visage the Club can be very proud of.

The entertainment, provided by Scott Vance, certainly added to the atmosphere. He seemed to be on hand the whole evening playing and singing mellow songs in between presentations and dinner served by Trish and Ross. The meal, as usual, was superb.

After the presentation of all awards, the fun commenced with Scott’s Neil Diamond tribute and then Abba, not John, but two lively ladies who quickly filled the dance floor. The evening ended with a touch of Italian favourites which featured Lisa Minelli.

This was a glamorous affair, well befitting the presentations of trophies and awards to those successful Club Champions who attended. The organisers may have been a little disappointed with a smaller than usual attendance which is a shame as I rate it the best I’ve attended.
