elcome to this special bumper 72 page commemorative edition of our Sorrento Bowling Club newsletter. There has been some debate about whether this special occasion marks our “40th birthday” or our “40th anniversary”. Well who cares! Let’s celebrate both! First of all some thanks to: • My bush poet mate Grahame “Skewiff” Watt for writing the lovely Sorrento birthday poem on page 5.

• Jim Woodward for a great article about Ron Taylor.

• Bruce Eagles, Gavan Ebsworth, Phil Oldershaw, Glen Larcombe, Di McGivern and Kevin Kennedy who sent me photos. Sometimes photos received are a bit blurred and can’t be used. Please try and get high resolution photos for me to use.

• Greg Taylor for once again taking the photographs at our Presentation Evening. What a difference it makes when a real professional takes the photographs!

• Jan Paniperis, Denise Odell and Alan Rolls who are always prepared to help with the proof-reading. They all make sure members’ names are correctly spelt and that your Editor is consistent with his use of capital letters, apostrophes and inverted commas.

• Brian Lucas for writing up our Club’s history. This needed many hours of research and digging through old papers. It is great to finally have a comprehensive record.

Did you know that . . .

• The Sorrento Bowling Club was named Bowls WA Metropolitan Club of the Year 2015/16 and also WA’s Club of the Year (Medium) Category for 2015? We also received the Club Manager of the Year award. These awards are great achievement for our Club and recognition for the hard and dedicated work of our many volunteers. Brian Lucas spent more than 50 man-hours collating information and preparing our submission.

• Graeme and Helen O’Brien have just become grandparents to a grandson (after five grand daughters)?

• Trevor Orton has been on the Match Committee for nearly 18 years? We all need to say

a special thank you to Trevor for the professional way he runs the various competitions.

It is not an easy job, what with “the no-showers”, the late arrivals, the duplicated entries and the whingers who shall remain nameless!

• Eric Tomkins and his wife Hilda celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary on 2 April

• Bruce Eagles reached the finals of the Men’s Over 60’s

State Singles? He played Sam Perica in the finals at Osborne Park but unfortunately lost by a narrow margin. Well done Bruce. It’s great to see Sorrento members doing well in State events.

• Ray Routledge has just turned 80. He tells me he had

• When Denise and I were celebrating our Golden Wedding Anniversary in New Zealand

(after 50 years of “wedded bliss”) my good wife, with the aid of our Tom Tom GPS, managed to navigate us up a four lane one way street? This resulted in us being heckled, shouted at and laughed at by a number of Kiwis. We also managed to end up in the middle of a retirement village when trying to find the Whangerei waterfall.

• Bruce Eagles has taken on the role of Administrator of the Sorrento Bowling Club Facebook page? A template for a monthly electronic newsletter (similar to the concept used by BowlsWA) is also planned.

• John Sturk, our very clever handyman, is now specialising in drilling thumbs? Ouch!

• Our Club is keen to increase our income by promoting the hire of our hall, barbecue

and greens? All submissions for use of our facilities should be made under the heading of “Hall & Greens Hire” displayed on the Club website. Bookings for non-regular club events such as Club opening day should also be lodged using the website. This ensures we do not double-book our facilities. All submissions will be replied to within a couple of days with hire costs and conditions of use noted. Our hire costs are very competitive.

• When one of our members turned 80 years, he got a letter from the State Member for

Joondalup? In the letter he was informed of some interesting events that took place in 1935, the year in which he was born. The World’s first television programme was transmitted from Berlin and the World’s first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City.

Qantas Empire Airways made their first scheduled service from Darwin to Singapore.

The Top single in Australia was “Cheek to Cheek” by Fred Astaire and the winner of the Academy Award for best picture was ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’. Makes you think!

• Tim Murray was appointed to the Bowls WA Board in October 2015? Tim’s appoint-

ment recognises his substantial contribution to the sport for over 30 years. Tim has played over 200 Premier League games, skippering before the age of 30. His other accomplishments include winning 31 club championships and the Gold Coast Fours. Tim

One final thank you to Kevin Coffey, another volunteer we don’t always acknowledge.

He runs the “Chase the Joker” each Friday evening and also opens the bar on some public holidays so that the Club doesn’t have to pay wages when there are only a few drinkers.

President’s Report

A

t our half yearly meeting I mentioned an article, that I had read, that argued that Clubs that fail to adapt to their ever-changing and dynamic environments will face a slow decline into obscurity as they will be replaced by newer, more innovative, less bureaucratic and less change-resistant competitors. I am pleased to report to you that your Club has indeed adapted over the past twelve months, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers and of course the Governing Council.

Our Club’s vision is to be recognised as the best bowling club in Western Australia. It was therefore pleasing when, a few weeks ago, at their annual awards night at Crown Casino, Bowls WA recognised Sorrento as being just that by awarding your Club the coveted title of Metropolitan Club of the Year 2015/16. We won this award against strong competition from finalists Leeming, Manning and Osborne Park. Then three weeks ago, also at the Crown Casino, Sorrento was award WA’s Club of the Year (Medium) Category, once To the Sorrento Bowling Club Fantastic news Brian, congratulations and well deserved.

I will advise the media team and someone will be in touch to appropriately mark this special occasion.

again against strong competition. On behalf of the Club I also accepted the trophy for Club Manager of the Year. We were previously recognised for achieving our vision by winning the 2011/12 Bowling Club of the Year and Clubs WA Club of Year (Medium) Category” in 2013.

Steve Pallas, Managing Director of Sports Community, who recently presented a three-day workshop on successful clubs on behalf of Bowls WA, said in a recent pod cast that he recognises Sorrento as being in the top 5% of all clubs that he has visited throughout Australia. Members and particularly our volunteers should take a bow for their role for indeed making this Club the “best bowling club in WA”. The judging of the finalists this year was very close and so the combined contribution of each and every volunteer made all the difference.

Congratulations Sorrento Dear Brian Congratulations to the Sorrento Bowling Club and to you and Ian as well. What a wonderful achievement and so well deserved.

Sorrento Bowling Club has now rceived official confirmation of what its members already knew – that it is the club of choice for those wanting to find a place where they can combine companionship with exercise.

Your club provides such a valuable service to the community and I am very happy to hear that you have been rewarded for all your hard work in making Sorrento Bowling Club such a wonderful community for your members.

2015/16 has been a year of reform. We changed our Constitution twice and reviewed our Club’s By-Laws to ensure Regards that they matched our road map for the Tony Krsticevic future and reflected changing circumMember of the Legislative Assembly stances and compliance requirements.

Member for Carine We introduced the new membership class of “Recreational Member”. We bedded down the new Governing Council structure, empowering your Vice-Presidents and their Committees, to make the running on operational issues. The Governing Council implemented more formalised and business structured processes such as operational budgets, a Capital Investment Plan and our Volunteer Management Plan. A few months back, the Club successfully completed a Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor compliance audit.

We have joined Volunteering Australia to access their resources and expertise and we have joined Connectingup, a not-for-profit organisation that enables the Club to benefit from substantial technology discounts.

System; solar panels on the roof; more cladding of face brick; replacement of our CC TV system with a state-of-the-art system; upgrading of our security system; new heated cool room doors; development of the information nook and sponsors area and a new TV and events management system (donated by the Dart Club).

Planning for the kitchen refurbishment is complete and work will commence in August.

We are also waiting for the outcome of a $13 200 “Building Stronger Communities” grant to assist with this project.

The City of Joondalup has commenced its detailed planning for the Western extension of the clubhouse that will see a 13 by 5 metre office and meeting area established on the Western side of the clubhouse in 2018, which will in turn will allow the kitchen to be further extended with the addition of a cool room and dish washing area plus additional room will be provided in the sports area.

The development of a synthetic, covered green on E-Green was discussed at the half yearly meeting. This of course is a big ticket item costing over $1 million. We have been actively trying to find funding sources to underwrite this venture. A grant application, made to Lotterywest, for a $1.3 million grant, as part of their “big ideas” programme was unfortunately unsuccessful, despite being supported by the Mayor of the City of Joondalup and MLA for Carine Tony Krsticevic. Wayne Gray is continuing discussions with the City of Joondalup regarding this project and seeking a Community Sporting and Recreation Fund Grant which will be the most likely source for funding. It appears that a comprehensive feasibility study will be required costing around $30 000, which the Club might have to fully fund. A financial commitment of this magnitude would naturally need to be put to a meeting of members. I am sure that this project will stay on the agenda for the incoming committee.

I once again thank all those members who have volunteered their time and effort over the past twelve months. As well as those that we see working in obvious places like the greens and gardens, kitchen, bar and bowls committees and officiating at events, there are also many people who work behind the scenes managing functions such as Club memberships, Bowls Connect input, participating on Bowls WA committees, managing room bookings, cleaning glasses and general cleaning, reconciling and banking, cleaning BBQs, undertaking maintenance, executing OH&S and compliance audits and so much more.

To sum up our Club’s achievements of the past twelve months: • Planning – we developed a new iteration of the “2020 Vision” called “Continuing to Thrive Through 2025” and are implementing its strategic direction.

• Finance – In what proved a quite difficult financial environment, we maintained our 11

strong financial position achieving a modest net profit. Despite increasing bar sales, our financial return was impacted by lower gross profits margins. Gross profit is the difference between what we pay for stock and what we sell it for. While members benefited from the delay in increasing bar prices, we do need to recognise that every six months Government Excise duties will increase our costs.

• Audit – You will recall that I mentioned at the half yearly meeting that Dion Smith

had been advised by his professional association that he should not conduct our audit because of professional indemnity issues. He could however conduct a review of our accounts which is permitted under the Associations Incorporations Act. Given the limited time available, Governing Council decided to ask Dion to complete his review for 2016 while auditors were sourced. The Club has now appointed PKF Mack to undertake the 2016/17 and subsequent audits.

• Membership – We experienced strong growth over 2015/16, at a time when many clubs were faced with declining memberships. Our membership target set out in the strategic plan is 700. We are very close to this target, finishing the year with a total of 655 members, comprising 325 bowlers; 32 croquet players; and 298 social members, including 35 dart players.

• Club Environment – Our House and Social committee has been active during the year

putting on a number of successful events. And didn’t they do a great job with our 40th Anniversary celebrations last Friday night. Chase the Joker and our Friday night roasts have proved very popular. All in all I think the Club is a happy place for members and their guests.

• Bar Operations and Club Usage – I believe it’s been a great bowls year with the Club

putting on numerous bowls and other sporting events, with increasing levels of innovation. We have seen some great Friday nights and attendance by members is up on previous years. I think that the bar is now quite a lean and cost-effective operation. Darts has once again been a success in bringing people to the Club, playing both Tuesdays and Thursdays and running a summer competition. Hall hire bookings are also on the rise.

• Sporting Performance – Five promotions, two Pennant flags and the ladies getting to the finals of 1 Red; what more can you say? Our players made a name for themselves in State competitions with Bruce Eagles narrowly beaten in the final of the State Over 60s. Oh, and the Darts section won the 1st Division grand final.

• Greens and Grounds – Aren’t they coming along well? The grounds look spectacular. Four greens now with lights – 2016/17 is looking like a great year for bowls and croquet.

I would like to thank our Sponsors for their on-going support and the work done by our volunteers in this area. It is so important that members and their families support our sponsors. They offer members great discounts and all they ask is for the opportunity to win your business.

There have been many initiatives undertaken over the past year including a revamped and renewed sponsorship effort; volunteers survey; a range of charity bowls events and Gala Day; reviews of office procedures and processes; technology and telecommunications upgrades and many more. It must be recognised that so much more has been done at an operational level that while not highlighted in my report, continue to be so vital to the Club’s success and ongoing sustainability.

So much has happened to your Club since 1976, thanks to the dedication of so many people. Well, what will the future hold? Will the world continue to change? Will there be more compliance and regulation to deal with? Will membership threaten to decline? Will profitability become an issue? Will bar prices go up again? Yes our Club continues to be challenged because change is inevitable and as a Club we need to continue to be receptive, adaptable and innovative.

Already on the horizon we have a new Associations Incorporations Act, Bowls WA are putting a proposal to their AGM this month to bring in a flat fee structure, major changes to the structure of the Bowls Pennant competition will happen in 2017/18 and to a lesser extent in the coming season and I am sure that there is much more around the corner.

This is my final report to you as President. I thank you for putting your trust in me and I hope that I have not let you down. I thank the Governing Council for their support and hard work during the past twelve months.

In closing, I express my appreciation to Ian Wittber who is retiring from the Governing Council but remaining active in the Club. It is pleasing that other members of the Governing Council will be continuing on. I extend my best wishes to your incoming President John Abercrombie and Vice-President of Sports and Participation, Ian Marshall, together with all of the members of the Club committees and sub-committees. I am confident that you will give them the support that they richly deserve. Thank you. – Brian Lucas

I

submit my report for the year ended 30 April 2016. Net Income for the year after depreciation was $5124 (previous year $12 530). Depreciation for the year was $32 112 ($31 151 for the previous year) and during the year $16 257 of fixed assets were acquired.

As at 30 April 2016, total cash on hand and in the bank amounted to $109 003 (last year $117 084), total creditors and other payables amounted to $62 409 (last year $62 836), 14

leaving a net cash position of $46 594 (last year $54 248).

Sundry debtors of $32 072 include an amount of $29 047 recoverable from our insurers.

As at the end of May, $19 970 has already been received. Accounts payable include $9984 which is included in the amount recoverable from our insurers.

Bar turnover for the year was $33 120 more than the previous year. However net income from bar trading only increased by $2192. This was a direct result of reduced margin during the year of 3.6%, which had a direct impact of $19 732 on the net income. The reduced margin was mainly the result of the increase in the cost of stock purchased during the year.

This increased cost was not reflected in the selling price of the stock until March-April 2016.

The net yearly cost of running the Bowls division was $78 004 compared with $77 406 the previous year. Net income from Croquet was $1742 less than the previous year. This was due to purchase of croquet balls for $1273 and increased depreciation charges of $967.

Net income from the Darts section was $2630 compared to $2595 for the previous year.

Net income from gaming was $109 more than the previous year. Overall gross income and expenses from gaming have reduced by approximately 50% from the previous year.

Dunno! (numerous people) Member’s Comment: Are you here to take orders for trousers?

I was next to the rack of trousers with the order form in my hand so didn’t understand the problem!.

Member’s Comment: I need shorts but I have no money or bank account, how do I pay?

Dah!!!

Luckily there was only one person who said that.

At least he got that right.

Member’s Comment: Can I wear my King Gee Navy Blue shorts with the Bowls logo on the side of my shorts?

He was quickly told the shorts were illegal because where he had placed the Bowls logo where our Sponsors logo will be placed. Can anyone guess who that was? The same member offered other members to come to his house, with their white trousers and shorts, because he had a old bath tub and he was going to dye them blue to save them money!!!

The classic. I received a SMS from a member who did not say who he was. All he asked was Mr. Humphries – When is the Grace Bros. store open for the next fitting?

My answer was, due to stocktaking the store will not open till 12.30 pm.

His answer, Book me in for a fitting.

I asked under what name? He never answered back. I was at the Club at 12.30 pm. Our Club was closed because of rain and I was told it would open at 3.00 pm so, seeing that I am such a nice guy, I sent a message to this unknown person to let him know. Next I get a message back saying the Club is closed and he didn’t read the message I sent him earlier. At about 4.00 pm I see this guy walking towards the Club. Then the penny dropped! I knew who he was. He’s the one with a little purse.

Last but not least. This guy comes in and says: “I need to try on some trousers”.

I took him over to the rack picked out two pair for him to try on. He then asked me, “Has anyone else tried on these trousers”?

So I said yes but its all right. I spay everyone that tries on these pants so people cannot catch anything.

But everyone who placed orders were fantastic and I appreciate everyone’s support. I have received orders from 154 male members.

Women’s Bowls Captain’s Report

W

ell, we are now well into the winter of 2016 and the terms of our current committees are drawing to a close. As I finish my time as Women’s Captain, I would like to take this opportunity to say some thank you to the Committee ladies, in particular, who have made the running of the women’s section of the Club so successful and so enjoyable.

First of all, I would like to thank all the members of my Ladies Management Committees over the last three years, who have made such a great contribution to the running of events such as Opening Day, Fashion Parade, Gala Day and Sorrento Women’s Invitation Fours and helped to make these functions such successes. My 2015/16 Committee of Pauline Bourne, Jan Cook, Pauline Marsden, June Gregory, Trish Cunningham and Anne Lilley have been so valuable in helping with decision-making, organisation and the actual running of each of these events. This committee of dedicated ladies has made the operations of the women’s section so much smoother and more pleasant. So I say a hearty thank you to you girls! There have been many other ladies who contributed in so many positive ways at each of our major events – far too many to name. But please know how grateful I am to every one of you for your contribution.

Pauline Marsden deserves special mention also, for the many and varied ways in which she has helped me in my role as Women’s Captain over the 2015/16 season. Her assistance in the office and with the Match side of all events I was involved with has been absolutely invaluable. She has been a ‘right-hand person’ to me on so many occasions and the tasks she has performed are far too numerous to list. She has also assisted the general bowling populous with her organised and professional running of her Match Committee and all of the events that they have been responsible for. Pauline has taken on many tasks around our Club, most of which go unnoticed and probably un-thanked. So to you, Pauline, I say a most sincere and grateful ‘thank you’. She followed in the very ‘big shoes’ of Coral Smith who for a number of years was my ‘right-hand’ Match person. A big thank you to you, Coral and come back very soon.

I think everyone will agree that the women’s section of the club had a particularly successful year in Pennants. In fact over the last four or five years, the Women’s Pennants has, in general, been on a steady path upwards – a highlight being the winning of a Pennant

by Tuesday Division 1 White in 2015 – an awesome achievement. Jan Cook has been at the helm of the Selection Committee for at least five years and it was largely her vision and planning to create Pennant sides that would continue to improve from year to year. A major aim was to get a side back into Premier Division and keep it there – a feather in any club’s hat, I am sure you would agree.

This process involved a lot of planning and hard work, particularly on Jan’s part, a lot of dedication and a fair amount of abuse – sad to say. However, with the help of some 18

dedicated ladies who joined the Selection teams at various times, this dream was achieved this year with the Premier side exceeding all expectations and making the play offs, having finished 4th overall. What a thrill – and this largely due to Jan’s planning, determination and dedication. So for that, my friend, we all thank you so much. You have done an awesome job on Selection, in spite of some pretty challenging moments.

Over my three years as Women’s Captain, I have had the pleasure of working with some wonderful ladies (and men), who have all helped to make my job so much easier. ur Sponsorship Committee continues to make good progress in ensuring our Sponsors receive recognition for their on-going support of our Club.

During April we held a “Sponsors’Appreciation Bowls Evening”. On behalf of the President, John Abercrombie welcomed the Sponsors as follows: “Welcome sponsors and guests. I am delighted to see you here tonight for some fun and merriment and of course to have a game of night bowls. Tonight is our Club’s way of saying thank you for your past and hopefully your ongoing support.

By our last tally Sorrento has 645 members, 212 who have joined the Club for its social side and 333 to play sport. Our members have families, friends and neighbours. Their collective purchasing power is significant and their ability to influence the purchasing decisions of others is substantial.

We were all worried that we would be rained out but the anti-rain dance that Alan Bishop did in the privacy of his own home (thank goodness, as we believe that nakedness was involved) worked because the rain and electric storms that were predicted for the northern suburbs on the night of 8 April stayed away. Therefore, the celebrations we had to thank our wonderful Sponsors went off without a glitch.

Unfortunately, not all our Sponsors were able to attend but those that did had a great time and vowed to return next year and in the meantime to try out bowling in earnest in the near future. Trish and Ross Cunningham did an amazing job in providing a superb array of finger food amidst the happy chaos that is a Friday night at the Club, which was exacerbated by the Brownlow count for the Men’s 1st division players. Ian Lucas behind the bar was also extremely helpful and supportive – nothing seems to be too much trouble for these lovely people. A special word of thanks to Kevin Cook and his staff who made sure A green was available.

Men’s “Bowler of the Year”

F

or the first time in my recollection, there was a tie and in fact a 3-way tie for “Men’s Bowler of the Year” in 2015-2016.

With equal points being awarded for the winners for all events, three bowlers won two events each.

Brian Lucas and Brian Collins each won the Pairs and Fours, while Greg Taylor won the Singles and the Triples. Each received their well-deserved trophies on our presentation night.

Women’s “Bowler of the Year”

I

t gave me great pleasure to inform Sharon Eggers, Ladies Captain, that on Presentation night she would be announcing Jackie Maxwell as the Woman Bowler of the Year.

Jackie had an impressive season that resulted in her achieving an overall score of 46 points.

She achieved this score as a result of winning the Mixed Pairs, Women’s Pairs, Women’s Triples and Women’s Singles.

In the Mixed Pairs Jackie played with Rick Munt and they were a formidable team. In the Women’s Pairs Jackie teamed up with Barbara Lorencs and it proved a winning combination for them both.

Jackie and Barbara also entered the Women’s Triples with Judy Campbell but unfortunately Judy had to pull out and was replaced by Vonnie King. In the Women’s Singles Jackie consolidated her winning streak.

In accepting the award, Jackie acknowledged the support and encouragement she received throughout the season from Rick Munt and Judy Campbell.

She said, “I couldn’t have done it without them”.

As Jackie went out to face Lorraine Hyde in the Final of the Singles, Rick was heard imparting the following advice “Remember, if you’re down, don’t be ****ing short”. Clearly, Jackie took his advice.

The final was a 25-up game and went for 29 ends with Jackie triumphant winning 25 – 21.

A number of people have asked Jackie how long she has been playing bowls. Her introduction to Bowls was in the Winter Scroungers in Toodyay. Her first season of bowls was in 2007/08 and she won the Club Championship Singles event. Jackie said she didn’t play bowls again until she joined Sorrento.

Jackie explained to me that she has played a few different sports throughout her life and said “if you master the basics you can become a reasonable player”. Jackie is far more than a ‘reasonable’ player and proved it by her impressive wins to achieve Woman Bowler of the Year. Congratulations Jackie and I wish you a very successful 2016/17 season.

Men’s Match Committee Report Men’s Pairs Championship The Men’s Pairs Championship for 2015-16 was concluded on Sunday 13 March, with Brian Collins and Brian Lucas proving too strong for Brian Saul and Ron Rogers. The two Brians started well and looked to have the match under control when they picked up a seven on the 12th end, only for one Brian and one Ron to collect a six on the very next end. But in the end, that six shot end was the last challenge and having only one Brian in the team was just not enough. Congratulations to Messrs. Collins and Lucas. The Plate final was completed several days earlier, with Barry Stewart and Rob Tozer winning over Phil Bilich and Alan Wood.

Men’s Singles A first-time winner of the Club Singles Championship was assured when Greg Taylor and Trevor Orton won through to the singles final. Greg had comfortably accounted for last year’s runner-up Ross Cunningham in one semi-final, while Trevor had narrowly defeated Craig Grisbrook (a first-time semi-finalist) in the other. Trevor started well and led 6-2 after 5 ends, before Greg found his length and strolled away to win easily. Congratulations Greg. Greg added the singles title to the triples title he won earlier in the season.

IGA Duncraig Twilight Pairs The Twilight Pairs Competition concluded on Tuesday 22 March, The best 10 cards are awarded to the player who submits the highest-scoring 10 cards during the 19-week season of twilight bowls). Overall, an average of 48 bowlers competed each week but 120 individual bowlers were recorded. 232 matches were played but the cards for one round were mislaid, so the actual number would have been slightly higher. Another week was lost to rain and, with the usual Christmas gap week, only 16 weeks were completed. In all, 48 bowlers submitted at least 10 cards during the year with the top 10 in the “Best 10 Cards” competition being:

The highest-ranked woman was Monique Kopec, at 31st overall. The biggest win of the season was by Brian Self and Colin Cramond with a +28 margin. I won’t mention who they beat!

Police vs Sorrento The annual Police vs Sorrento bowls night match took place on Wednesday 9 March. 29 bowlers from each side played 8 matches, with each side winning 4 matches. But, for the first time in several years Sorrento emerged victorious by virtue of ‘shots up’ – 131 to 115!

A sausage sizzle preceded the evening and with drinks and a raffle to follow. One Police bowler, Peter Rogers, had to “change sides” in order to even up the numbers and he ended up being in the top winning rink. The Police are trying to think of an appropriate charge to lay against him.

Somewhat disappointingly, and despite advertising on the Bowls W.A. website, only 3 visiting teams were in attendance. But those that did play had a great time.

Three matches were played – 15 ends of fours, 8 ends each of split pairs and another 15 ends of fours was the schedule. Only four teams managed to win all 3 games, with the team led by Nerrida Porteous, (with Jenny Lockwood, Russell Lockwood and Ross Porteous) the unlucky team to miss out on the overall prizes.

Trevor Carpets Mixed Fours Trevors Carpets (Ray Green) once again generously sponsored the Mixed Handicap Fours held on 23 and 24 April. A good field of 22 teams of Sorrento members entered the event.

Teams had to comprise of no more than one division one man, one woman and no more than 13 points handicap; applied to the bowlers main division. This format encouraged a number of lower division players to be drafted into teams with innovative names like “The Bowled and The Beautiful”, “Sausage Rollers”, “Lean Mean Green Team” and “Fourlawn”.

Fortunately the weather was beautiful on the Saturday and it started spitting with rain just after we finished the last of the Sunday matches.

The format was to play three games of 15 ends each day but this proved too strenuous and the number of ends was reduced to 12 ends per match for the second day. With one round to play, two teams had won all of their matches, so a tight overall finish was in prospect. In a tight finish, the “Bourne Supremacy”, consisting of Tony Bourne, Craig Grisbrook, Pauline Bourne and Brian Saul scored a two shot win and the “Carpetbaggers” (Ken Foggo, Kevin Cook, Jan Cook and Mick Martin) found the last hurdle just too high and fell one win short. Men’s Veterans Championship The 2015-2016 final took place on 1 May in beautiful sunny conditions and on an immaculate green. Jim Ironside and Brian Saul had progressed to the final from the field of 14. Sectional play and an alignment round were played prior to the final. Brian won the toss and the first end but from then on it was Jim all the way, racing out to a 12-2 advantage after 8 ends and maintaining his familiar steady drawing ability to the end to win his first veteran’s title 25-14. Other Men’s Match Committee Announcements Two decisions that affect next year’s Men’s events were made this week following a review of the past year’s program.

The first is that all men’s championship events next year will be played under the sectional format. There will be no plate. The plate will remain in the mixed pairs and fours championship events.

The other decision was that Twilight Pairs will move to WEDNESDAY evenings from next year. This move will take advantage of drier and theoretically faster greens. Green speeds have been compromised recently due to the maintenance schedule which must prepare the 30

best possible greens for Pennants.

Another decision reached earlier in the year was to avoid scheduling club championships that clash with State championships when scheduling our program for the season. The proposed move to 8-team divisions for men’s Pennants for next year will assist in this regard by reducing the number of Saturday Pennant days but it is also likely that some events will need to be played on a Friday evening in order to fit all championships in between October and April. Women’s Match Committee Report

N

ow that the 2015/16 Women’s Bowls Calendar of events has reached its conclusion and the off season schedule is under way, I would like to reflect on the past few months. Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to the Match Committee who have done a fabulous job in facilitating the Championship events, Invitation Day, Women’s Country Week and the Women’s Handicap Triples.

Trevors Carpets Invitation Day Due to the generosity of Ray Green, the Trevors Carpets Invitation Day was a very successful event. We had 32 teams entered – an increase from 26 the previous year. The feedback from visiting players was very positive with them expressing a keen interest in returning next year.

Mixed Veteran Pairs A total of 36 players competed in this event The overall winners were Peter Snow and Judy Campbell and the runners-up were Neil McLaughlan and Sylvia McLaughlan. The am winners were Tiger Hogan and Nola Mullumby and the pm winners Jim Ironside and Beryl Tutt.

Women’s Veteran Singles The Women’s Veteran Singles had a better response this year with eight women competing for the title. The winner was the defending champion Judy Campbell, the runner-up Lorraine Hyde and the Plate winner Eleanor Adams.

Women’s Singles The Singles Championship event was an amazing competition with high quality bowls being played in stiff competition. In the semi-finals, Jackie Maxwell played Nerrida Porteous in a game that ended 21 – 19 to Jackie. A good crowd attended the semi-final and final matches with the Men’s finals played on the same green. The semi-final between Lorraine Hyde and Kathy Gobbart was a 26 end battle that resulted in Lorraine winning 21–16.

Other events In April Country Week, Presentation Night and the Women’s Handicap Triples brought the Match Committee’s major commitments to a conclusion. It was an honour for Sorrento to host three days of Women’s Country Week in April. The first two days were a Fours Competition and the third a Pairs Competition. We received numerous compliments from the players on the high quality of the greens and the delicious food provided by Ross and Trish of Silver Fern. The highlight was clearly the carving skills and winning smile of Ross as he graciously and generously served the women.

Presentation Night It has been a pleasure throughout the season, to collaborate with Trevor Orton, the Chair of the Men’s Match Committee. He has been incredibly generous in his willingness to be inclusive in regard to Mixed events and the support and advice he has given me was invaluable. I therefore looked forward to the culmination of our efforts and the achievements of the men and women bowlers when we facilitated the Presentation Night. Although the attendance was disappointingly low, Presentation Night was a resounding success.

Thanks to our interior design specialist Jan Cook and Company, the hall was transformed into a welcoming venue and the music from Richard Roberts added to the ambiance. It was great to see so many members in celebratory mode and of course Brenda Richardson was the first to take to the dance floor. A special thank you to Greg Taylor, who through his business Fotomakers W.A., gave members the opportunity to purchase the professional photographs he took on the night. They say every picture tells a story and the proofs certainly ‘proofed’ that!

Women’s Handicap Triples Nicki Whitehorn from egoli Place of Gold jewellers in Glengarry sponsored this event.

She donated $100 prize money and a pair of beautiful pearl earrings to be raffled. In total $490 prize money was awarded. The overall winners were Moira Dean, Charmaine Harris and Judy Campbell. The runners-up prize went to Pauline Bourne, Vonnie King and Robyn Woodward. The 3rd prize was awarded to Jan Cook, Larraine Brickell and Liz Marshall. Nerrida Porteous, Barbara Hill and Mary Cressey were the am winners and the pm prize was won by Jackie Maxwell, June Gregory and Eleanor Adams. Nicki presented the prizes and Mary “Queenie” Cressey was the lucky winner of the raffle.

Nominated Open Pairs From early May, the Match Committee began facilitating the Nominated Open Pairs for 20 weeks. We averaged 20 teams last year and now that it is an “Open” competition, we have increased this number. Please be mindful of playing fast and loose and swapping 33

partners, as in the Divorced Pairs, the Mixed competition, pencilled in for Wednesday 28 September, you will not be allowed to play with your Nominated Open Pairs partner. I have started creating the Fixtures list for the 2016/17 season to ensure we lock in important dates such as Opening Day which will take place on Sunday 18 September. The 29 June afternoon will be sponsored by Bowra Panel and Paint and the 21 September afternoon by Modern Plastics and Pergolas.

Social bowls In closing this report, I would also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous commitment of the Social Bowls organisers. The Friday team is Stan Wood and Barbara Spence and they have done an incredible job of facilitating social bowls on a Friday and incorporating three fund raising events, the Cancer Charity Day, the Joe and Barbara Stow Memorial Day – Heart Foundation fund-raiser and, with the support of Neil and Sylvia McLaughlan, the Silver Chain Day. Sunday Social Bowls is an institution here at Sorrento due to the consistent support and enthusiasm of Betty Stern and Stan McCullagh. Social Bowls is often the introduction and stepping stone for new bowlers and their welcoming hospitality and generous support is very much appreciated by them and the many players who enjoy a social game.

In conclusion Personally the 2015/16 Season has been an incredible learning journey and I appreciate all the positive comments, support and advice I have received. It has been a privilege to be part of a great team and I thank Lee, Liz, Fran, Trish and Nerrida for their time and commitment.

A big thank you to Kevin Cook, the Chair of Greens, for his support and to Alan McFayden for the high quality of the greens. The Match Committee also appreciates the way in which Jim Ironside, the Co-ordinator of Umpires, has ensured we have an Umpire at our competitions.

SBC’s Trevors Carpets Women’s Invitation Fours

O

n Friday 19 February 2016, we ran our annual Women’s Invitation Fours sponsored very generously by Trevors Carpets. This prestigious event is open to Division 1 players only from clubs around the state.

This event has now been supported by Trevors Carpets for five years and year by year the interest in the event has grown significantly to the point where 32 teams entered this year’s competition. Teams play three games of eleven ends with prize money being awarded for game winners, round winners and three overall placings, the major winners receiving 34

$1000 for their efforts. Ray Green has also added prizes for the first toucher – after a whistle is blown – on each green in each round plus free drinks at lunchtime and at the conclusion of the day’s play.

It is Ray’s awesome generosity that makes this event such a draw card and enables us to attract a lot of teams without a lot of effort. For this, we offer our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to Ray. The day before, Jan Cook coordinated a small band of women, who decorated the hall, spent a number of hours moving tables, laying black and yellow tablecloths, blowing up balloons and putting decorations on the tables. A sumptuous lunch was prepared by a small team of very efficient and hard-working ladies, coordinated by Trish Cunningham, who began preparations the day before to ensure that there was more than enough food for all players and workers on the day.

Delicious ice cream was again donated by Kishore Dudhia from Wendys Warwick as part of the dessert provided on the day – thanks again to Kishore for his continued support.

Three raffles were held on the day as a small contribution to fund-raising and these were very handsomely supported by all in attendance. Thank you to those people who manned the raffles tables and also to those who donated items, particularly Vanessa, from Aero Bowls in Balcatta who is so generous in supporting our women’s major events.

The weather was perfect, following some very unpleasantly hot days and the organisation on the Match side of the day was very ably coordinated by Pauline Marsden and her team.

Umpiring was willingly provided by Geoff Murray and Tony Friedlieb – thank you, gentlemen, for your valuable assistance.

Many compliments were received about how smoothly things ran, so great thanks to the Women’s Match Committee. The major games prizes were well shared around as were the raffle prizes. A team from Osborne Park took out the overall win having won all three games by significant margins.

Whilst this event is not considered one of the women’s major fund-raisers, like our Gala Day, over $2000 profit was made which goes straight into the Club’s general funds. So thank you to all the people who helped out in any way with the running of this event – every little bit really helps and goes towards making the day such a success.

We have earned a well-deserved reputation for putting on a professionally-run, prestigious but highly entertaining competition and many attendees have already requested being included in next year’s event.

Well Done to the 4 Gold Men’s Pennant Team

O

ur team consisted of Alan Rolls, Raymond Slimper, Dan Greig, Frank Tyson, Stan McCullagh, Wim Wouts, Richard Fermoyle, Kevin Kennedy, Bill Jones, Barry Jones, Stan Brickell and Bob Steven. This team was a good representation of English and Scottish players with a couple of South Africans and Australians and one from Holland.

We had very little to worry about during the season because of our manager, Bob Steven.

Bob did all of the necessary worrying for the team. A master stroke from the Selectors was to select Stan Brickell as a Skipper. They must have read in a past newsletter that Stan and his mower need 30 minutes in the sun to warm up and get to work, because as a Skip he is in the warm sun all afternoon and just gets better. Stan is a “10 pound Pom” from Manchester. He supports that other Manchester team, you know the one that has spent more money on buying players than Colin has spent on the new stadium and Betty’s Jetty.

“The Lord of Doughton Manor”, Stan McCullagh, our elder statesman bowler puts his longevity in playing bowls down to his performance enhancing banana that he eats mid game. After eating a banana occasionally his big black bowls have been known to go rogue and have demolished the head swooping in from the edge of the next rink.

By the time that we reached the final, the road from Sorrento to Maylands was a road well travelled. We had played Maylands on the last but one game of the season. At that time we were in second place on the ladder and optimistic of hosting home finals. The Maylands green took us all by surprise. If you used the same weight when bowling towards the clubhouse as you used bowling away from the club then you would be many meters short and the lumps and bumps on the green were tricky to negotiate.

The final score was Maylands 87 (6) Sorrento 34 (0). During the Pennant season Maylands had won all but one of their home games with an average winning margin of plus 40 shots per game. Maylands finished the season in second place and Sorrento dropped down to 4th spot. We were paired with Bassendean in the first final. Having recently played on the Maylands green was in our favour and this helped us win through to the final against Maylands.

By now we were more familiar with the green and we did not let Maylands dictate the game as they had done so during our earlier encounter. Their tactic of playing long ends on such a difficult green had been to their advantage. In the final on our rink, skip Stan Brickell and third Alan Rolls proposed that we try bringing the mat right up and playing around a minimum length.

This tactic was very successful Maylands did not handle the short ends with as much confidence as they had when playing long ends. Sorrento’s improvement in the final compared 36

to our earlier Pennant game with Maylands was massive.The win was down to the application of all of our bowlers and a positive winning outlook. Well done to all team members.

During the drive back to Sorrento Stan told us that his opposite Skipper spent most of the afternoon complaining about the state of the green. There is just no pleasing some bowlers!

Umpires’ Corner

W

ith the Club’s 40th anniversary this year, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on some of the aspects of umpiring in those early days. Being a relative new-comer to lawn bowls myself, I had to rely on one of our more senior bowlers for her memories of those days. I would like to thank Fran Bracknell for providing some interesting aspects of the game and the umpiring of that period.

To become an umpire in those days required weeks of tutoring and undertaking umpiring exams to test your ability to memorise all the laws and rules of the game, i.e. ‘a closed book exam’. Later, umpire’s exams became ‘open book’ and this made life a little easier.

In that era, the Men and Women bowlers were highly segregated and unification was considered a dirty word in most Clubs. Bowls etiquette and dress standards were strictly enforced, particularly with the Ladies.

Fran remembers the dreaded ‘measuring box’ the ladies had to stand in to make sure their skirts were no more than the regulation 15 inches above the ground. This would be checked by one of the lady umpires. No cloths were allowed to hang out of pockets or off clips, they had to be either completely in your pocket or held in your hand. Ear rings were not to be worn although bracelets could be worn literally up to the elbows.

All bowls clothing was white with no advertising logo’s permitted. Skirts were the standard dress for Ladies and slacks were not permitted until some years later. The wearing of the BWA hat badge was strictly enforced.

One of the rules applying at the time stated that where a player disturbed a bowl or bowls in the head before the number of shots had been agreed, the end would be regarded as completed and the opponents of the offender will score as many shots as there were bowls in use by such opponent, e.g., in a game of fours this would be eight shots.

The game has moved on from those days and will undoubtedly continue to change into the future to meet the ever changing demands and priorities of the sport and future players.

Umpire Confiscates Jack

T

he cry rings out across the green for an Umpire to do a measure for shot. The Umpire requests approximately what gap is required to be measured. The lady requesting the Umpire holds up a thumb and forefinger about two millimetres apart. The Umpire, upon arriving at the head, finds the measure required between the jack and bowl is about 30 centimetres.

With much laughter from the spectators on the bank, the Umpire returns to the Umpire’s trolley to obtain the correct trammel and proceeds to do the measure. On completion of the measure and, unseen by the bowlers, the Umpire picks up his gear, including the jack and returns to his chair. The winning lead places the mat and then looks for the jack. After numerous requests amongst the bowlers at the head, nobody can find the jack. Suddenly the Umpire springs up from his chair with the missing jack firmly clutched in his hand.

This brings more laughter from the watching spectators.

Who was the Umpire? If you replace one letter from Tom and Jerry with the letter ‘D’, this will be revealed.

Thank you Ron Taylor

T

he common denominator between the Mr. T who forged a career as an American actor and the one who parks his car outside the Sorrento Bowling Club is – GOLD. While Ron Taylor isn’t as ostentatious as the Chicago-born Laurence Tureaud, he has at least allowed himself the luxury of sporting personalised Mr. T number plates. And while Tureaud draped himself with gold chains, our Mr. T is pure gold as far as Sorrento is concerned, having been a stunning contributor to our Club over many years.

Ron joined Sorrento in 2002 and it’s hard to find anyone who can match his commitment, loyalty and value to the Club.

Having retired at the age of 53 from his government job in the administration section dealing with country water supplies, Ron thought he had better find a few things to do and, with such healthy bowling blood lines, it was 38

no surprise he decided to take up the sport.

His grandfather was a life member of Mosman and his mother a life member of the Bedford Bowling Club.

On phoning Sorrento one day, he was instructed by Des Bennett to come straight down to the club as he was just about to conduct a coaching session. He got badly bitten by the bug and in his first season as Skip in the 5th Division Ron, with a team of basically firstyear bowlers, helped Sorrento beat Perth Tatts 50-0. He still has no trouble remembering that the carnage occurred on D6.

At the first AGM Ron attended, Ian Marshall talked him into joining the Match Committee.

The following year he was its Chairman and he was only too happy to oblige again when Glenn Boston, the then Assistant Treasurer, said he was going away for a while and suggested to Ron he come down and be shown what the job entailed. The only problem was that Glenn didn’t return to his post and Ron has thus held the complex job, which involves taking stock every week and doing the banking, for a decade.

Other positions followed such as Club Secretary, again at short notice in 2011/12, a stint on the Bar Committee, including being Chairman and qualifying as an umpire where he often officiated at Ladies Pennants.

When you throw in countless sausage sizzles, including at Bunnings and curry nights as well as helping run community bowls, there isn’t much Ron hasn’t done around the Club.

“I guess I am a glutton for punishment,” he confessed.

Dear Club Members We would like to pay particular thanks to Ron Taylor, the distinguished man who has worked incredibly hard giving so much to the Club over so many years. His huge efforts greatly assist in the ongoing functioning of the bar.

Ron’s time and devoted efforts are a true reflection of the man he is and his love and patronage for our Club.

Over the years Ron has fulfilled very important voluntary roles within the Club. He currently works tirelessly reconciling bar accounts and also helps out within the bar. He provides a great deal of support within social bowls and our Club in general.

Ron’s diligent and consistent efforts over the years have afforded him the well-deserved respect for which he has undeniably earned. As an integral part of the Sorrento Bowling Club and with his interest in bowls, he is placed in solid stead with his good mates and Club counterparts.

We would like to sincerely thank Ron for all the great work he delivers in his various roles.

Ron still sends down a pretty handy bowl and was in Sorrento’s Saturday division 4 Blue squad which recently won the grand final against Wanneroo at Joondalup to earn promotion to 3rd Division.

And when opponents, at any level, become annoyed and even slightly dislike Ron after being on the receiving end of a beating at Sorrento, he unconsciously has a rapid-fire way of fixing that.

If the queue at the bar is long and the vanquished become even more peeved at the delay, Ron unselfishly jumps in and starts pulling beers in order to make sure their thirst is more quickly satisfied. Now surely, there is a member of our Club truly worth his weight in gold.

Reflections on Life

• As we get older, we get wiser. I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People move • • • • • • • • • •

out of the way much faster now.

Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their father.

You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone. That’s common sense leaving your body.

I don’t like making plans for the day because then the word ‘premeditated’ gets thrown around in the court.

I didn’t make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying that I went to the Jim this morning.

Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven’t met yet.

I don’t need anger management. I need people to stop irritating me!

Old age is coming at a bad time! The biggest lie I tell myself is: “I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it”.

The kids text me ‘plz’ which is shorter than please. I text back ‘no’, it is shorter than ‘yes’.

I’ve lost my mind and I’m pretty sure my wife took it.

Why do I have to press one for English when you’re just going to transfer me to someone I can’t understand anyway.

Men’s Selector’s Report

he 2015/16 was a very successful season for the Sorrento Bowling Club. In mid-week Pennants our Club won two Pennants (1 Blue and 2 Blue) and four promotions (1 Blue, 2 Blue, 2 Gold, 2 and 4 Gold). On Saturday Pennants we achieved one promotion in 4 Blue.

On 12 March the Pennant wind-up was held and over 100 players attended which was excellent. During the evening the annual awards were announced.

Women’s Selection Report

L

ast year has been one of the most successful and exciting seasons for all of the Ladies Divisions. The Selectors thank all who participated in making this such an excellent season.

The Premier Division finished in 4th place and were unfortunately beaten 49-60 by North Beach in the semi-finals. After a slow start, Green 1 came home with a rush to finish in 6th place. 2 Green had some excellent wins to finish 3rd. 3 Green won promotion finishing on top but were unfortunately beaten by Warnboro, going down by one shot in the semi-final which was a most exciting game.

4 White also finished in 1st place and gained promotion to 3rd. They also were unfortunate to be beaten by Hollywood Subiaco in the play-offs. Well done ladies, you did your Club proud.

Saturday pennants were also very successful with 1 Red finishing 2nd but were unfortunately beaten in the play-offs. 3 Purple finished the season well to take 3rd place.

Why be a Selector?

T

he worst job any volunteer can undertake within a bowls club is that of Selector. You can be sure that there are a number of things that will happen to you if you undertake this role and some are:

You will never be able to satisfy everyone, Your phone will run hot for at least six months, You will have a sore ear that lasts for at least six months and You will either be loved or hated based on your selections.

You will also have to face members who will question their selection and everyone else’s as well. The question is why members do not agree with the Selector’s decision; some reasons may be:

• • • •

I am better than that, I would be better playing in a different position, I cannot play with that person and I can play better than he can and he has been selected in a higher division.

The Selectors will have many questions asked of them during the season and members will wonder if the Selectors know what they are doing and if the right people are on the committee.

HOWEVER, regardless of anything else, the one and only validation of a Selector’s performance that cannot be argued with is the results at the end of the season. If there are promotions then the Selectors have had a good year and if there are demotions, the Selectors have had a bad year. Let’s face it, this is a no win job. Why would any sane person be a Selector?

Men’s 1st Division Brownlow Trophy

T

he count for the best performer in Saturday 1st Division for the 2015/16 season was held at the Club on Friday 8 April 2016. This was the 15th year that the Brownlow count was held. There have been nine previous winners with three players having won the trophy on more than one occasion. Peter Crow and Geoff Murray were joint winners for the 2014/15 season.

A maximum of 15 points could be allocated for each game by the other members of the rink and a total of 16 games could be used for the count.

This year 25 players were used in 1 Blue and finishing second on the ladder was a great result. This was much better than most predicted. With a top finish, the count for the Brownlow was expected to be close with most of the ‘good judges’ thinking that Chris Lander, Mick Martin and Geoff Murray would fight out the finish. After the first 11 games, Richard Bone led the way on 108.5 points followed by Chris Lander on 106, Ron Rogers on 104 and Mick Martin on 98.5 points. However after 15 games, Chris Lander had taken the lead with 140 points with Richard Bone on 134.5, Ron Rogers on 128 and Mick Martin on 127 points.

The voting for the last three games was always going to be interesting as Sorrento won their last three games with the three leaders in the voting being in teams that won their last three games. With one game to go, Richard Bone joined Chris Lander at the top of the score board both being on 158.5 points. John Godfrey called out the last votes and it was revealed that in the final game away at Bassendean, it was Richard Bone that scored the most points on the day to get up and win the Trophy. Richard played the whole season as second to Ron Rogers with Brian Collins as the third and Steve Mortimer and Brent Marshall playing as leads. They won ten games and had two draws.

This year also saw all the players in the 1st Division Blue pick what they considered as the ‘Team of the Year’. Players nominated were to be considered not only for their bowling skills but also their ability to positively influence their team mates and the team, they could not nominate themselves and the player could only be selected for 1 position in the team and they must have played in that position during the season.

The selected Team of the Year was as follows: Skip: Chris Lander, Third: Ross Cunningham, Second: Brian Lucas and Lead: Geoff Murray.

Sorrento Scoop Pool at “Touch of Style”

O

ur ladies added a true “Touch of Style” to the best run event on the Ladies calendar.

By invitation only our Club had seven entries namely Jan Cook, Pauline Bourne, Liz 45

Marshall, Barbara Lorencs, Kathy Gobbart, Lee Leach and Nerrida Porteous.

This competition runs with 48 Country Ladies and 48 Metropolitan Ladies. One doesn’t know who they are teamed up with until they arrive for play on Day 1. Teams are made up of 2 Country players and 2 Metropolitan players who stay together for the duration of 2 and a half days and play sectional play format.

What a wonderful outcome for 3 of our ladies when it came down to the final day’s play.

Liz Marshall and team had secured a third place win hence $800 pay out.

Barbara Lorencs and team and also Jan Cook and team had done themselves proud with both teams finishing with wins of +11 points a piece. Now here comes the nerve racking part - back on the green for a play off.

Bowling to the ‘yardstick’. This, folks, is where you hope your draw shot hasn’t deserted you. The spectators were very supportive of both teams. After brilliant play from each and every player, Barbara and her team took out the major prize of $1800 with a 3-1 win and Jan and her team picked up runners-up prize to the tune of $1400. With lots of vocal support and hugs and kisses from our other four Sorrento ladies and the crowd the prizes were handed out.

We at Sorrento Bowling Club must be pleased and proud of the ladies who participated in, and won, this very prestigious event. I know how each and every one of them felt after the event – tired but happy. New friendships were formed and lasting memories made of happy times at the Vic Park-Carlisle Bowling Club. Bring it on next year!

Greens and Grounds

I

would like to say a big thank you to Alan Mcfayden who has done a tremendous job in returning our greens to a standard that can be appreciated by all ‘grass green bowlers’.

Although we have two greens still under renovation, these are both showing healthy signs but still require some work before being able to be bowled upon. E green is the most advanced, however you may have noticed that all the plinths have been removed and the ditches widened. When the plinths are joined together and are staked in such a way as to alleviate movement, white sand will be placed in the ditches in a way that will allow the ditch rubber to swing freely, which assists in the elimination of rebounding bowls. In addition, the levelling of the plinths may require some light top dressing on the playing surface. B green is progressing and may need another light top dressing to remove some small indentations that exist.

Our worst problem, at the moment, are the earthworms on C and D. Various attempts have been made to rectify this problem but with no success. The problem that worms create are their castings which cause the mower blades to wear out quickly (these are not cheap) and also when it is wet the rollers cannot flatten the surface as these either stick on the roller and drop off in lumps or squash down and cause the bowls to vary in line or length.

Continuing efforts will be made to find a solution.

The plinth work on both these greens will be carried out immediately after E but only on the North and South Banks. A green looks to be in good condition, however there is a problem with the hardness of the surface which may have been brought about by the loam/sand mix used during the laser levelling process. This is highlighted during watering when the green floods and it takes a very long time for the water to soak in. Furthermore, when testing this, a screwdriver will not go very deep into the surface when compared to other greens. Deeper drilling may be needed.

To Ken Vercoe, who led the ‘Thumbs Up’ gardening crew, thank you for a job well done, as we have received lots of comments on how well they looked throughout the years. You have been on the job. You have set a high standard for the future. To Bill Long, Colin Bangs, Bob Jeffs, Robyn Rowe, Roger Haber, Tony Bourne and Dennis Crocker, your regular attendance on a Monday at the Club is very much appreciated. There are many others who are readily available to carry out the specialised type work and some names that spring to mind are Warren Elliott, John Sturk, Brian Saul, Brian Collins and George Sjepcevich. There are others and thank you all for your assistance.

Many of our requirements are implemented to assist with the spread of wear on the greens.

We thank you all for assisting in this regard as it helps us with keeping all areas suitable for play for as long as possible.

Croquet Corner News Ladies’ State Championships Sorrento Croquet Club was this year chosen to host the WA Ladies’ State Golf Croquet Championships – thanks to the lovely condition of our lawns. The event was a great success and brought our Club into the eyes and minds of players who had never previously visited the Club. For me, the greatest measure of success was the willingness that our members showed in supporting the event – both as spectators and volunteer workers.

It is most encouraging to witness such support and gives us hope and motivation for the future success of the Croquet section. Sincere thanks to everyone involved from the Croquet Committee.

Easter Monday Fun Day Following the Bowling sector’s lead of having an Easter Monday event, the Croquet section decided to call a “last-minute” Fun Day and sent an urgent e-mail to all members. Those members, who had not already gone away for Easter responded positively to the invitation, delighting the organizers. The morning session was devoted to a Singles Competition, with Doubles being played in the afternoon – both events were Handicapped play. The day’s winners were Odette Moro, Terry Harvey, Thora Lay and Kerry Bomford, who celebrated with other participants over a drink and “nibbles” in the Clubhouse – overall a very happy and successful event.

State Squad Practice Day This event was held from 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday 8 May and was attended by twelve potential members of the WA State Squad. The Sorrento members who attended learned that players at all levels needed to practice “drills” and warm up prior to playing. We also learned more about tactics and strategies used to help win hoops. The players were delighted with the condition of our lawns but had to bring along their own set of “Quadway” hoops. The croquet section has requested the purchase of these hoops, which are becoming the “standard” Nation-wide and are delighted by the response of the Executive Committee to the request. We hope to see these new hoops in use in the near future.

The George Parslow Cup The intrepid ladies of Sorrento CC - Kerry Bomford, Pat Hobson, Judith Skeet and Thora Lay – set forth to Cambridge CC to claim the George Parslow Cup. Instead, they won themselves the title of “The Sorrento Dreamers” with this changing through the weekend to “The Sorrento Boozers” and ending with “The Merry Sorrento Players”. How reputations are built – and croquet games lost! It was handicap play and we think we know what our players’ main handicap was and where their strengths lay!

Having been knocked out of the Main Event on Saturday, they decided to enjoy the celebratory dinner and were greeted with questions concerning the well-being of their heads the next morning as they sipped their “Cappuccino Diet Cokes” – they, of course, claimed to be “just fine”. They proved their croquet abilities on Sunday by reaching “The Good Egg” finals but failed to win the title! Nothing to do with the state of their heads, mind!

The most successful Sorrento player of the weekend was Rex Morgan, who participated in the “Rocketball Challenge” and was pipped at the post by ex-Sorrento couple Peter and Kathy Hamilton, Rex losing by only one hoop. An enjoyable weekend was had by all and Sorrento proved to be “good sports” in every way!

The Brian Hadley “Rising Star” Invitation Tournament Entry to this Tournament is by invitation only and this year Di McGivern was one of thirteen players State-wide invited to participate. The tournament was a level play full Round 49

Robin event – meaning that players with varying handicaps from 10 down to 4 competed without any “extra” shots allowed. A player with a handicap of 4 won the Tournament without losing a single game! Di enjoyed the experience and learned a lot from playing against a variety of much stronger and more experienced players.

Scouting Group Re-visit On Tuesday 31 May, a local scouting group visited the Club for the second time, with the youngsters who came playing with great enthusiasm and making comments such as “I don’t know why more kids don’t try it – it’s such fun!” Thanks go to Pat, Thora, Jim and Di for hosting the visitors on a chilly night from 6 to 8:30 pm. We took the opportunity to encourage the young visitors to invite their friends to “have a go” one day soon.

“Heartfelt” letter from Terry Harvey “I would especially like to thank Denise Vercoe, Trish Cunningham and Chris Lander for saving my life by doing CPR on me and using the defibrillator machine to resuscitate me when I collapsed at the Club having had a heart attack. My grateful thanks to the Sorrento Club for having invested in a defibrillator and thanks to all club members who wished me a speedy recovery after my heart surgery”.

Community First Responder System Members of the Sorrento Club are fortunate that our Club, by owning a defibrillator (Resuscitation Machine) as part of our First Aid equipment, is part of the “Community First Responder System” creating a direct link between the Club and St. John’s Ambulance Service, W.A. Owning the machine is one thing – being able to put it to good use is quite another.

It is imperative for survival that, in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, the person is defibrillated within the first five minutes. Terry Harvey put this to the test a few weeks ago (over the Easter weekend) and, thanks to some of our members being able to use the machine effectively and immediately, Terry was kept from dire consequences.

To ensure that all members have the confidence to use the Resuscitation Machine, when and if necessary, Judith Skeet will organise for some training sessions to be held in the Club for new learning or revision of past learning. Being able to use the machine with 50

Referee Workshop Croquetwest has organised a Referee Workshop to be held on 9,10 and 11 July at 9 am with one of Australia’s top referees. All croquet players are encouraged to attend and become qualified referees while brushing up on the details of the rules at the same time! Those accredited before the National Championships in August – September could find themselves refereeing these high level games. What a challenge!

Farewell from the 2015 Committee Di McGivern (Captain), Pat Hobson (Vice-Captain); Margot Bindeman (Social Events), Robyn Rowe (Player Events) and Harley (Mack) Williamson (Safety and Maintenance) will all resign their positions with effect from 1 July 2016. Tribute to Martie Angelinovich: 1933 – 2016

M

artie was born in July 1933. He was always known to us as Martie Angelo as most of us had problems spelling or pronouncing his surname. He joined our Club in 1998 and had to resign in 2014 when his health deteriorated.

He was always a regular social bowler and was very competitive and really enjoyed winning ‘the money’. For some reason, which he would never divulge, he declined to play Pennants but nevertheless enjoyed Club competitions. He had a good upshot/drive which he would use when he needed to get an extra point for another end. Martie passed away on 10 April 2016. He will be sadly missed by all his friends

ome feedback on member’s health status: • Charlie Beggs is doing well and has been travelling around and will be off to Queensland in the near future.

• Gordon Kirkham is suffering from pneumonia but is quite positive of recovery and is looking forward to returning to bowls.

• Bill and May Leyland are a little frail but are still getting around OK. • Coral Smith is still having preventative treatment and is going to gym to build up her strength and hopes to start bowls again in the not too distant future.

• Glenn Boston has had another operation and still in a lot of pain.

• Val Thornett is making progress and is having physio to help with her speech. Both Val and Mike are quite positive.

• Ken Vercoe says he is in good hands at Hollywood hospital and is hoping to get back to bowls soon.

• Both Helen Ironside and Jean Baker returned from overseas holiday and ended up quite unwell.

• John Hammond, who was a member of our Club for 20 years, is undergoing treatment for cancer. We wish him a speedy recovery.

• Jim Woodward has completed his course of chemo and we are pleased to see him back on the bowling green.

• Vonnie King has had her knee operation and is back home. Moira Dean tell us she is doing well and has to be on crutches for a while.

• We were pleased to see Dick Merton back at the Club after his eye problems.

• Wendy Saul’s shoulder operation was a success and she is very happy with the results On behalf of all Club members we wish you all a quick and good recovery. Now the very sad part of our report, ‘Member’s Deaths’. Our friends Martie Angelo, Mike Smith, John Warner and Ian MacIntosh passed away in the last few months. On behalf of all Club members, we pass on our deepest condolences to all families.

Tribute to Ian MacIntosh: 1934 – 2016

I

first met Ian and Margaret when I joined the Sorrento Bowling Club to play social bowls and, of course, we met in Joe’s Corner (now called “Fat Cats Corner”) swapping our stories and various opinions of what was happening in the World.

We discovered that Ian had a very colourful past. As a young man he joined the Royal Navy where he met Margaret at a dance. They became engaged and later married.

After leaving the Navy, he became an English Policeman and from all accounts was a very reliable cop. During this period he and Margaret had two children, both girls, who they brought up to be independent young women. Later Ian left the Police force to become a publican. Although it was hard work and long hours, it was very successful and, of course, with Margaret by his side.

Later in life they emigrated to Western. Australia as a family. However, Ian and Margaret with their youngest daughter returned to England, leaving their eldest daughter in Perth.

After a few years they returned to Perth and started a business called Curtain Man. Ian did the measuring and fixing whilst Margaret oversaw the machining and running the office.

It was a business they both enjoyed.

They bought a caravan and took off up north, stopping at Broome, where they met up with the Hanlons and Taylors. However, Margaret decided that caravanning wasn’t for her so they visited Holiday Camps in various parts of the world. They were always ready to go on trips so, with the Hanlons and Middleditchs, took off to Kalgoorlie on the train taking in the sights and enjoying the pubs.

Whenever there was an event to celebrate amongst the members in Joe’s Corner, we all enjoyed lunches at each others homes, where celebrations would go on for some time. Ian and Margaret were always there and good times were had by all.

It is always sad when one of our members passes on. We will miss you Ian. - Jean Middleditch

The History of the Sorrento Bowling Club

I

n this article, our Club President, Brian Lucas, looks back over forty years of our history:

Early History Ever wondered why we are called the Sorrento Bowling Club and yet we are located in Duncraig? The concept of a sportsmen’s club had its origins back in December 1970 when a group of local residents thought it was about time that the expanding northern suburbs had better sporting facilities. This was at a time when Warwick Road had yet to be constructed.

Momentum had gathered by 1973. Warwick Road had become a single carriage road, splitting at one point to go around a large tree, and extending all the way to the Ocean (Marmion Avenue did not exist). The Duncraig shops had been built but little other infrastructure existed in the area and in particular very few sporting venues.

1973 was the year that the first public meeting of local residents was held in the Sorrento Hall located in Padbury Circle. The meeting organised by Jim Fitzmaurice was called to consider what could be done to advance local sports in the area.

Representatives from various sports attended this inaugural meeting, including darts, tennis, bridge, little athletics, Aussie rules, soccer and of course lawn bowls. Over the next few years the group continued to meet, mostly in people’s homes or in the Sorrento Hall.

A sporting club was subsequently formed with a President, Secretary and Treasurer plus the presidents for each of the individual sports. The group looked at what was happening at other sporting clubs such as Innaloo and Scarborough.

The Sorrento Sporting Club (called so because they were meeting at a hall in Sorrento) started with around 150 members but this included many juniors from soccer and little athletics. Bowling membership was around 20 players. At this stage the group had no facilities. They approached the then Shire of Wanneroo to see if they could find suitable land, preferably in the Sorrento area.

Bowlers during this period were using the Wanneroo Bowling Club as their home ground, the tennis club played on public courts adjacent to the public library in Warwick Road and little athletics used Robin Reserve located in Sorrento.

The Council suggested land in Warwick Road that was being used by Thiess Bros to mine for limestone and sand to sell to the Main Roads Department for the building of neighbouring roads. Thiess Bros had an indefinite peppercorn lease over the land.

During 1974/75 the Sporting Club undertook discussions with Wanneroo Shire Council to agree on a land lease and the construction of club rooms. Thiess Bros was approached to relinquish the lease for a 2-hectare parcel of land and for the reserve to be transferred from mining to recreation. The land was to be used to construct a club room and two bowling greens. Substantial adjoining areas were earmarked for parking and large areas for other sports to operate from. The whole area was then combined into a single area to become known as the Percy Doyle Reserve.

The Sorrento Sporting Club approached the Wanneroo Council for funds to build a clubroom and the Council agreed on a dollar-for-dollar loan. Funds were raised through club memberships, debentures, raffles, etc., which was challenging because no physical structure existed at the time.

The Club’s original president was Peter Wooldridge, ably supported by his wife Helen.

Keith Minkey worked tirelessly as its secretary as did the treasurer Alan Pallett.

The Sorrento Sporting Club (Inc.) became an incorporated body in June 1976.

After deciding to form its own internal club, the Sorrento Bowling Club held its first meeting on 21 June 1976 electing Arthur Steward as its president and Ray Schofield as secretary.

A Club Constitution was also developed.

The clubhouse was handed over to the Sporting Club in December 1976 and was officially opened on 27 February 1977. A liquor license was applied for and an architect, Michael Broderick, was commissioned to do the initial designs.

A number of foundation members are still active in the Club today, namely Bill Leyland, Graeme Herd and John Murphy. Others such as Peter Wood still visit from time to time and 58

sadly many have joined the big bowling club in the sky.

Internal Rumblings Discontent started to appear about how the clubhouse should be used. Operating through licensed premises proved unsuitable for clubs with juniors such as little athletics, tennis and Aussie rules. Soccer at the time was played at Kingsway, with players and supporters returning to the Sorrento Sporting Club premises to celebrate or commiserate their day’s sport. It soon became evident that the cultures of soccer and rugby didn’t mix well with lawn bowls. Soccer also wanted a paid coach and to pay some of their players. Not wanting to be left out, lawn bowls and tennis also expressed interest in having a paid coach, naturally going beyond the financial resources of the Club.

Hence clubs started to go their own way and establish their own facilities. Lawn bowls took over the clubhouse and its loan repayments in 1979/80. Funds were raised through debentures, BBQs, raffles and bar profits.

The Darts Club was formed in 1982. Its original side included current members Juris Lorencs and Brian Collins.

The Sorrento Sporting Club (Inc.) became the Sorrento Bowling Club (Inc.) in May 1983.

Sorrento was named Club of the Year in 1991/92. At the time the Club fielded ten ladies Divisions, ten men’s Divisions on Thursday and nine on Saturday, with a total membership of 520.

Building Development The first clubhouse design envisaged a two storey facility with entrance and toilets located on the upper floor. As so often happens, money is too tight to mention and only $140 000 was allocated for the construction of a 20 by 20 metre single storey facility to house a lounge and main area. Following much discontent concerning the size of the facility, a small storeroom was converted into a decidedly inferior kitchen. Acknowledging the inadequate size of the original building, the Western wall was built of a timber structure to allow for future expansion. The building became available on 15 December 1976 and officially opened on 27 February 1977 by Wanneroo Council President Charlie Cearson.

Like true pioneers, people attended the site back then, together with their cars, had to endure large quantities of limestone dust blown up from the limestone road leading to the site from Warwick Road and blown in from surrounding areas. Many of the older bowling 59

members had experienced a World War and possibly the Great Depression. They were stoic stock.

The first bowling green was constructed by volunteers, who walked shoulder-to-shoulder across the greens area picking up debris, to make them ready for planting by the end of 1976. Bent grass was used for the green and paving slabs for its banks. Water did not become available on site until March 1977. A second green planted in 1978.

The use of voluntary labour on the greens proved challenging with many people (as they do today) giving their two-bobs worth of advice on what should be done and how. A parttime greenkeeper who was working at another bowling club was subsequently engaged by the Club for two days per week. The greenkeeper’s instructions were unambiguous – “I don’t take advice from committees. Enjoy your bowls and your drinks and I will look after the grass”.

The clubhouse building did indeed prove inadequate for the Club’s requirements. A small extension of the clubhouse to the South and East was undertaken in 1983 to extend the kitchen and make a secretary’s office.

In 1984, the then Shire of Wanneroo approved changes to the Club’s leased area extending it to the West by 10 metres to allow for machinery sheds and dedicated parking bays.

A further extension to the Western end of the clubhouse was undertaken and opened on 8 December 1990 (lucky our founding members had the foresight to use timber in the Western wall of the original structure).

Two additional greens were constructed in the mid 1980’s to the south of the original greens. E green was constructed in 1995/96.

Croquet had its beginning in May 1994 playing on Percy Doyle Field No 3 (a football ground) and in April 1997 became the Sorrento Croquet Club using recently constructed courts at the Sorrento Bowling Club.

A formal lease with the Shire of Wanneroo was entered into in 1997.

Bowling Club Leadership The Club’s foundation members, including Graeme Heard, Bill Leyland and John Murphy, received their Foundation Members Badges at a ceremony held in April 1993.

The first President of the Bowling Club Section was Arthur Stewart in 1976/7. Arthur served the following two terms as President. In all we have had eighteen presidents, many serving multiple terms. The longest serving President is Ian Marshall who served for six years, followed by Ian Wittber who served for five years.

Bowling Achievements Originally playing at the Wanneroo Club, our first two-rink 6th Division bowls side won the pennant in their first season in 1976/77, defeating another new club, the Bellvue RSL. They continued to play at Wanneroo until 1978.

Membership Growth From its humble beginnings with twelve members in 1976, the Club grew to 318 members in 1982/83 and then to 434 in 1987/87. By 1997 the Club had grown to 575 members with 322 male bowlers, 175 lady bowlers and 78 social members.

Currently the Sorrento Bowling Club has 645 members, including 301 lawn bowlers, fielding 25 Pennant Divisions making it the largest Club in the State in terms of capitated bowlers.

Our members mostly come from within the City of Joondalup with the largest concentrations in Duncraig (27.3%), Sorrento (10.7%), Hillarys (10.1%) and Kingsley (6.3%).

These spectacular achievements follow on from previously winning Bowls W.A. Bowling Club of the Year in 2012 and Clubs W.A. Club of the Year in 2013.

It is important that members appreciate the dedicated work that took the Sorrento Bowling Club to get to where it is today and the ongoing contribution from its members that it will be required to keep us a great club in today’s ever changing world and retain our current mantle of the “Best Bowling Club in Western Australia”.

Have Your Say – Send a letter to the Editor As a regular bowler I wonder whether it is really necessary for some bowlers to be sarcastic on the green? Recently when his team were bowling short bowls a Skipper shouted out, for all to hear, “Are you trying to build the Great Wall of China?”.

This was followed by “If you are going to move about when I’m trying to bowl then go and stand on the bank”. For interest the Skipper then proceeded to bowl a bad short bowl.

On another occasion when a Third said “I’m not sure if we are holding shot or not” this was followed by “Even Stevie Wonder would be able to see we have the shot by an inch” Oscar Wild once said “Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit”. Its aim is to belittle or hurt someone and to perhaps raise a laugh at their expense. Is it really necessary on the bowling green?

I recently played a game of 2-4-2 pairs against a bowler who refused to kick back bowls.

He stated sarcastically that “Kicking bowls is women’s work” and that the mat should just be placed in front of the bowls. He proceeded to stand on the bank when we changed from short ends (which we were losing) whilst I kicked all the bowls back. This rather unpleasant person never once said “good bowl” or “well done”. Surely we need to remind ourselves that we play bowls for fun!

Tribute to John Warner 1930 – 2016

J

ohnny Warner was born on 10 May 1930. He was a man of many, many attributes. He was a very strong man both mentally and physically.

He was also an extremely caring man who helped a great many people in need, visiting friends in hospital and homes. He never gave up on them as long as he was needed.

He was also multi-skilled and could fix just about everything around the home and garden.

This was not restricted to his own home as he answered lots of calls from people who required his help and of course he gave them just that!

He and Annie embraced their twilight years with gusto and spent Perth winters in Broome swimming, walking, playing bowls and socialising. In 2009 they went around the world on the Dawn Princess. They snorkelled, scuba-dived, parasailed and took advantage of most of the outings on offer. They also enjoyed trips to Tasmania, Langkawi, Bali and our own beautiful South West.

Last year they went by ship from Fremantle to Tilbury docks (38 days across and up the west coast of Africa). On arrival they tried to hire a car only to be told they were “too old”.

They eventually hired one from an international company and over six weeks Johnny and Annie drove all over Britain and up to Scotland where Johnny met relatives that he had only spoken to on the phone. In all Johnny’s travelling he had never been to Scotland.

They travelled the Highlands and went over to Skye. Although the weather was cold and wet they enjoyed the warm and cosy pubs with their good food roaring fires and talkative locals.

Annie’s grandson Brendon was only four when Annie and Johnny got together. Johnny filled the gap left by his late grandfather. Brendon just adored Johnny with his whacky sense of humour and his many tales of when he was in the merchant navy!

One of Johnny and Annie’s lovely neighbours, on hearing that John was a “10 Pound Pom” remarked that Australia got a ‘bloody bargain’! Most people who knew him would agree.

This special man will be missed by his family and friends at the Sorrento Bowling Club.

The Mystery of the Missing Rings

D

id you hear a true Lord of the Rings happening experienced by our own Lindsay Baker? His wedding ring was found to be missing from the third finger on his left hand after a day of vigorous garden clean-up which resulted in a mountain of rubbish piled high in his trailer. Appears the cold day had reduced his finger to ring slip proportions and that wedding ring was somewhere in the pile of rubbish. Daunted not, Lindsay peered into the rubbish for a week with no luck and, but for a gust of wind to move one of the larger leaves to reveal the ring just before giving up. That ring was on its way to the tip. For a day following, with sweat on brow and a steady hand working a twisted wire into the bowels of the pile of rubbish, Lindsay succeeded in extracting the ring to save the day. Not so lucky on another lost ring experience though, Lindsay’s wife, Marilyn, reported the loss of her wedding ring somewhere in the house.

That elusive hiding place was not revealed during the ensuing search and Lindsay, true the loving husband that he is, felt the only thing to do was buy a replacement, identical in every respect, down to the inscriptions of name and wedding dates and whatever other encrypted words are engraved on wedding rings. The joy was met with despair, when following a later 65

Not sure what one gets for engraved wedding rings on Gumtree these days? Popular belief is things happen in 3’s. There was some talk about a ‘ring of fire’ story following a curry night but no details have been provided.

Did you hear another wedding ring story? A right “Ripley’s Believe or Not”. One Russ Lockwood lost his wedding ring while snorkelling over coral in Port Villa, not 48 hours after the wedding. Luckily a couple, met just the night before and also on their honeymoon, had witnessed the distress and declared their ability to find the ring some 150 meter out into the lagoon over finger coral. Yah right! Appears, as born again Christians, they sought Divine intervention for guidance but alas, after a lengthy search, they ceased the search and progressed to frolic as newlyweds tend to do, when out in the middle of a lagoon on their honeymoon. The ensuring mishap of a dislodged snorkel saw it fall to the fingered coral below. You guessed it – right on the piece of coral that the wedding ring had settled on. Tribute to Mike Smith: 1943 – 2016

O

ne of the Club’s most charismatic and flamboyant members sadly passed away last month. Mike Smith who was with the Club for over 30 years will be remembered for his firm opinion on all manner of subjects, no doubt fuelled by his time adjudicating as a first grade cricket umpire. Mike would often appear at ‘Table 13’ carrying new scares from his recent adventures or misadventures and with that dry sense of humour of his, try to explain what had happened. Occasionally, some of us ‘gits’ would not fully understand. Mike will be sadly missed.

Community Bowls – a Huge Success

T

he evening of 19 April 2016 saw the culmination of a great season of community bowls at Sorrento. Twenty teams of four competed every Tuesday night over sixteen weeks and a big thank you is to be extended to the greenkeeper who ensured a quality playing surface every week. The weather gods also smiled upon us with only one week of competition being washed out and that was the second last week, the week before the finals.

Fortunately the weather was great on the night of the finals and all games were tight.

The A Division final was hotly contested and with one end to play scores were level at 11 each however it was ‘The Chiefs’ who secured victory over minor premiers ‘Aussie Aussie 67

In the play-off for third and fourth, ‘DT’s’ were victorious over the bookies’ favourite ‘Sultans’.

In the B Division it was the minor premiers ‘Wild Turkeys’ who held steady to take the division title against ‘M & M’s’ whilst ‘Four Pack’ secured third place defeating ‘White Tigers’.

Season highlights included a number of theme nights where bowlers were encouraged to play in fancy dress including St Patricks Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter and of course Christmas. There were some memorable people in dress and the ongoing raffles and giveaways kept everyone entertained.

Whilst the Club looked after the running of the competition it really was the input and vitality of the Community Committee that ensured the success of the season. Neil and Erin McCormack, Mark Kiely and David Palm worked tirelessly to firstly secure 20 teams for the season and then to ensure every night was an enjoyable experience.

Wally Smith Silver Chain Charity Day 2016

ur Club has hosted a charity fund raising day for the Silver Chain organisation every year over the past twenty-two years and this year the event raised a total of $700 bringing the grand total to $29 667. The Silver Chain is a not-for-profit organisation and is one of the largest providers of community clinical and health care services in Australia.

They offer a diverse range of services, including home care, palliative care, emergency care, family health care and other services. The event is called the Wally Smith Silver Chain Charity Day in memory of an earlier long term club member who was receiving 68

care from Silver Chain when he suggested the inclusion of this event in our Club’s annual program. A number of Sorrento bowlers or their family members are currently receiving Silver Chain care.

The twenty-second annual event was held on Friday 26 February and following a great afternoon, bowling members took part in a raffle of over forty prizes donated by Corporate Sponsors or members. Funds raised from the raffle, together with a percentage of the days green fees and including all money normally set aside for the days bowling prizes, formed the total donation.

Competition winners on the day were Cheryl Greig, Ken Evans and Lee Leach. They each received a bottle of wine and will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy.

Unfortunately Cheryl was missing when the winners were photographed. Runners up on the day were Helen Teasdale, Jenny Bartlet and Clair Hanlon.

While it is not possible to thank all of the volunteers who either personally contacted local business houses seeking sponsors for the days events, donated prizes themselves or helped run the event, we do need to thank the following members who made a significant contribution: • Sylvia McLaughlan who rounded up a great many prizes to be raffled from local business houses.

• Wendy Stobie, who sold raffle tickets throughout the day.

• Monique Kopec, who provided a bottle of whisky in memory of Dennis Saunders, who had provided one or two bottles of whisky to be raffled each year for many years.

• Paulene Marsden who helped run the day’s event.

• Joy Hennessy and Herbie Eisenmann who both donated $50.

Each year the success of this fund raising event has been heavily dependent on the goodwill and generosity of the many corporate sponsors. Club members are encouraged to appreciate and support the sponsors listed in the magazine.
