President’s Report

(As tabled at the AGM held on 17th June 2012)

O

ur vision expressed in the Club’s Strategic Plan 2020 Vision - Planning for the Future of the Sorrento Bowling Club is to be recognised as “the best bowling club in Western Australia”.

At the Bowls WA annual trophy presentation held at Burswood on Friday 25th May 2012, we received much of that recognition by being chosen as the Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year for 2011/12. The award is given to the club that demonstrates outstanding performance for membership and capitation, pennant performance, greens, outside facilities, holding State events, participation in association events and promotional activities, under 18 promotion, community use of facilities, major works carried out, administration, having sports officials and Bowls WA officials, duty of care and club achievements.

This prestigious award was given to us for being the outstanding bowling club of the year and recognises not only the hard work put in by the current Executive Committee, committees and sub-committees but also the preceding Executive and supporting committees who have laid the foundations upon which our strong club is being built. It is recognition for the tremendous contribution made by our greens contractors, bar staff and our army of volunteers who have worked so tirelessly in so many aspects of the Club’s operations.

The entire Club should be extremely proud of winning this award as it demonstrates the recognition given by Bowls WA and the bowls fraternity for the achievements of the Sorrento Bowling Club.

A big thank you to Ian Marshall who has resigned from the Executive Committee due to the workload associated with his new position with Australian RSL Bowls. Ian has been a strong servant of the Club, including six years as President. Ian will continue his involvement with the Club, working with the Greens Committee and in other areas where his expertise is needed, and hopefully will return to the Executive when time permits.

Last month I received a petition signed by a number of members who were objecting to the implementation of a ClubTab due to perceived issues associated with a lack of space; the untenable nature of gamblers in the Club and their associated noise; and the turning of the Club into a pub. I have also heard suggestions that decisions such as the ClubTab should be voted on by members at a general meeting. I am not in favour of referring this type of decision to the general membership. As members you elect other members to represent you on the Executive Committee and to make decisions on your behalf. Some decisions you may agree with and some you may not.

Those members who signed the petition will be pleased to learn that a ClubTab is not on the agenda in the foreseeable future – not because of a decision by the Executive but a rather a decision by the Department of Racing and Wagering who considered that the Club took too long to make up its mind and are now looking at other options for their TAB. I am taking the opportunity in this President’s Report to outline the thinking behind the decision which led the majority of Executive members to vote in favour of a ClubTab. To operate the Club in a manner that members have come to expect costs around $500,000 per year. So where does the money come from to run the Club?

By far our greatest income source is bar profit; followed by subscriptions fees and a range of other incomes such as green fees, raffles, sponsorship etc.

We are currently 100 capitated members under our peak 2008/9 season and we have been drawing on our financial reserves to make up a deficit between what we earn and what we spend. This year compared to the last financial year while our bar has been performing well, our subscription fees are down, our green fees are down and other sources of income are also down. We will spend more than we earn.

So what happens when we use up our financial reserves? One of two things - we find new revenue sources or/and increase our fees and prices, or we reduce expenditure by, for example, closing some of our greens or reducing the hours that the Club operates to enable volunteers to be used.

I am sure that the members here would not wish to see their fees raised substantially or prices increased dramatically; nor would they wish to see Sorrento follow the route travelled by many once vibrant clubs that have had to amalgamate or now operate with a couple of synthetic greens and fewer than 100 bowlers. It is certainly not a legacy that I would want to leave, especially having been part of a Club now recognised as the “best”.

Unfortunately, as I have explained to members before, our membership whilst extremely loyal, is aging. With an average age of 67, we tend to play less bowls, spend less money and for various health and life style reasons, a number of members have left the Club.

The ClubTab was seen as one possible solution to increasing our revenue streams by increasing membership and bar turnover by making the Club more attractive to younger people. We anticipated that the ClubTab would generate around $25,000 per year. When you do the maths that works out to be $70 per capitated member.

Like I imagine many who signed the petition, members of the Executive Committee 5

were wary of unintended consequences that may result from putting in a ClubTab. We contacted five bowling clubs that have installed ClubTabs. We were told that the ClubTab is not like the traditional TAB, attached to a pub. They are automated, compact facilities. They will increase membership and bar turnover and had not resulted in anti-social behaviour. The introduction of a ClubTab has been a financial saviour of the North Beach Bowling Club, increasing membership substantially and adding considerable money to the club’s coffers.

The Executive Committee decided to give the ClubTab a twelve month trial. It would have been located near the administration office and away from the main operations of the Club. Only Club members would have been able use the facility and associated noise from the facility would have been closely controlled so as to not disturb other patrons. The trial would have been evaluated by the Executive Committee, the City of Joondalup; and Racing and Wagering. Finally, should the Executive have decided to continue with the ClubTab after the trial, members would have had the option to replace the Committee with another at the 2013 AGM. I have spent some time setting out the Executive Committee’s deliberations over the ClubTab to hopefully convey to members a better understanding the challenges that confront not only this club but all clubs.

I like many members would like the Club to stay exactly the way it is. Unfortunately it won’t. We, like other successful clubs must continually reinvent ourselves to remain relevant and attractive and generating enough income to not only survive, but to prosper – and to keep our new title of “Metropolitan Bowling Club of the Year”.

This does not mean that we throw away those things that we value. The heart and soul of the Club must endure but at the same time we must be realistic about what we need to do to stay strong and vibrant.

With the ClubTab option seemingly eluding us, we must innovate to find other ways to make money without continually calling on our members to pay more. This the Executive will focus on in the coming financial year.

All in all, I think 2011/12 has been a sensational year and I look forward to an equally rewarding year in 2012/13. I would like to thank the Executive and our committees and sub-committees for their great efforts during the year, and to thank our many volunteers for their unselfish contribution.

I

concur with President Brian’s remarks and congratulate everyone, on playing a part in achieving the Metro Bowling Club of the year award for 2011/2012. Yes it is a great honour. Looking back over our previous achievements and successes we must now focus on the future.

Richard Fermoyle has indicated he will be unable to continue on as a committee member, although he has indicated he will assist Chris and his team if required. Ray Stapledon will replace Richard. I would like to thank Richard for his commitment as a member of Match.

The Match Committee are looking for Volunteers to assist in running Corporate Bowls. If there is a member out there who would be interested in assisting be it Tuesday or Friday Corporate Bowls please relay your expression of interest to Ken Giles. Everyone who assisted last season I thank you. The Match committee are working on next year’s Bowls Calendar. This should be available in October 2012.

Jim Ironside is looking into recruiting umpires. If you would like to become an umpire please contact Jim. In addition Graeme Heard and Graeme Whitehorn are seeking interest from Club members who would like to become a qualified Lawn Bowls Coach. All interested members please contact either Graeme Heard or Graeme Whitehorn.

Ken Giles is coordinator of Club Volunteers. Any form of volunteering in club activities is very much welcomed and appreciated. If you are in a position to assist with volunteering please register with Ken. The Selectors are currently looking into the role of Duty Teams and Team Managers.

More about this at a later date. Please be reminded to place your Bowls application form in the box provided under the team notice board. This is important as it gives the Selectors an indication of how many teams to nominate for next pennant season.

Alan Rolls and his team have assured me that the previous high standard of Greens and Grounds will continue – “yes”. Also thanks to Graeme Whitehorn for doing such a great job in the Secretary’s role AND has committed for another term – Thanks “Whitey” Finally – remember “Our club’s future is in your hands”

Men’s Match Committee Report

F

irst of all I would like to congratulate all the competition winners especially Ron Kuziela and Fran Bracknell who were named as Bowlers of the Year.

Ron did well throughout the year, He won the Mixed Fours and the Men’s Pairs and was runner-up in the Men’s Triples and in the Singles. Ron won his first trophy in 1986 and over the years has won numerous Single, Pairs, Triples and Fours at North Beach, Scarborough and Sorrento. In 1994 he won the Australian Champion of State Champions Fours in NSW and was also a Rosenthal Medallist. He has won the State Singles and the State Fours and in 1996 won the Masters Singles held at Vic Park. In 2002 he was equal 3rd Australian Champion of Champion Singles in Victoria. Well done Ron! We need bowlers like you in our club.

The Sorrento Bowling Club Dash for Cash was played on Saturday 26th May with 16 teams on a bright but cool autumn morning. The club was happy with the numbers and look forward to the coming program of Dash for Cash events with the remaining days being Saturday 23rd June, 28th July and 25th August. Sponsor for these events is Safeway Security Screens and it is the third year of their support for this event. We are pleased to welcome them again.

Winners of the May event were Trevor Orton, Colin Stainsby, Brad Williams and Neville Odell from Sorrento while L Johnson, A Partington, M Martin and J Lorencs (composite) were the runners up. The winners of the morning prize were B Young, N Lewis, W Tan and L Mola with the afternoon prize going to T Kay, B Lucas, N Gibbs and B Collins.

In the Novice Men’s Singles Championship all the players seemed to enjoy their time in the sun although not all were happy with the results of their games.

At the commencement of the games all players were instructed in the duties of a Marker and handed out the brochure produced by our umpire’s co-ordinator. This 9

information along with the rules of play were well received and acted upon by all competing.

Scheduling of the games was difficult as two of the novices were playing in the Men’s Pairs Championship and, after progressing into the plate event, continued to win through. We did overcome this eventually and the final was played on Sunday Morning 25th March at 10.00am. David Cowell and Colin Stainsby matched up and a tough game ensued with both players bowling well.

Unfortunately for David, Colin was able to bowl that bit better and went on to win what spectators considered was a high quality performance from both players.

The pleasing aspect of the Novice’s event this year was the keenness of all new members, some who had been bowling for less than 6 months, to participate. What a great future the Club has if this attitude continues. We look forward to seeing them in more Club Championships in the future.

Please remember that on most Saturdays in the winter we play nominated triples and popsticks so get your names in by 12.15pm. If you don’t have a team please don’t worry as we will make up teams on the day.

Men’s Pairs Championship

T

he Men’s Pair’s Championship was held over three days in March 2012. This was the last competition of the year in which to earn points towards Bowler of the Year. Thirty teams participated and on the first day an alignment round and the first round were played.

In the alignment round played over 13 ends there were some close games, the closest being the Tony Pilgrim/Brian Self combination beating the Tiger Hogan/Steve Draper team 13-12 and Jim Ironside and Graeme Heard triumphing 12-11 over Bruce Eagles and Peter Snow. At the other end of the scale A beat B 21-5 (no names no pack-drill).

In round one (also played over 13 ends) there were no really close games in the major but in the plate Steve and Tiger beat John Collishaw and John Sanders 15-13 after having to play an extra end.

However there were some big wins with a 25-3 in the major and a 22-4 in the plate.

The quarter finals and semi-finals were played on the following Sunday. This 10

was a scorcher of a day and the temperature was closely monitored by the umpire of the day. At one stage the official reading was 39degC. However our contestants bravely soldiered on and completed both rounds, but it was a long hot day.

The two major semi-finals were both keenly contested with Peter Crow and John Godfrey beating Kevin Price and Wayne Gray 14-13 with Ron Kuziela and Mick Martin coming from way back to eventually triumph over Ian Linford and Brian Saul.

The plate semi-finals were not as keenly contested and Colin Stainsby and Brad Williams together with Tony Sabatino and Ken Giles won the right to meet in the final.

To the finals played on the 25th March.

The games, played over 17 ends, started at 1.30pm and there was a fair crowd of spectators.

In the major Ron Kuziela and Mick Martin won the first three ends to take a 6-0 lead which set the tone for the rest of the game. By the 11th end they had built up a 12-6 lead and eventually ran out winners by 18-8. Congratulations to them both.

In the plate final the scores were level at Ken Giles and Tony Sabatino nine all on the 11th end. Colin and Brad Winners of the Men’s Pairs Plate scored a two on the 12th end to lead 119. Unfortunately for them Tony and Ken rallied and did not allow them to score again while scoring seven shots themselves in the last five ends to run out winners 16-11.

Ladies Match Committee Report

W

hat a wonderful turn out we had for our Mother and Daughter afternoon. We had 36 participants who were all willing and able to master the art of bowling.

We didn’t have too many bowls on the wrong bias and I’m happy to say that we had quite a few touches from the novices who had never played bowls before. (Bring out the membership application forms quick!!!). Thanks to Glenn Boston, Mike Smith and Joan Whitham for organising the sausage sizzle afterwards.

The Ladies Novice Championship was played late last year in what could only be termed “very hot” conditions with the temperature reaching 36.8 degrees at one stage. Three ladies contested the Novice competition with Jane Hayes and Shelley Jeffs playing in the final.

The final was a hard fought match with the score being even at ends 8,12,14,17 and 19. (Wow! This was close) Shelley Jeffs drew away in the last two ends to win by 5 shots. Well done to all three ladies and especially Shelley.

The Ladies morning of “Bowling with a Twist” was a great success. It was always meant to be a way of winding down after a long hot summer full of bowling, bowling and then some more bowling. I think we did manage to achieve just that with a game of Irish Bowls, bowling backwards between your legs, blindfolded bowling and using your opposite hand to bowl. I can assure you that a lot of skill was required just to get your bowl on the right bias at times, not to mention which foot to step out with.

Some ladies (including myself) would perhaps be better off playing pennants blindfolded or with their left hand, or maybe our bowls are just so well trained that they know where the jack is. All in all it was a great way to relax and enjoy each other’s company but the best thing about the day was that everybody went home a winner.

Congratulations must go to Pauline Bourne on her outstanding results in the Champion of Champion Singles event that was held at Yokine Bowling Club on the 28th and 29th April. Pauline won her section and then beat her opponent Debbie Smith from Kukerin in the alignment round. In the quarter final she came up against Noelene Abe from Corrigin and had her 8-0 down before Abe even scored. People on the bank at this stage were asking “who is this woman from Sorrento”? From there on Pauline still was on top of Abe until Abe clawed her way back into the game and had Pauline 16-15 down. With that Abe unfortunately scored a 4 on the next end and the game was all but over. Abe ended up winning 21-15 - she also went on to win the competition. Pauline should be very proud of her performance and also the recognition she received for herself and for our club.

On behalf of the Ladies Match Committee we would like to congratulate all the 12

Championship winners and especially to Fran Bracknell our Lady Bowler of the year. Fran was runner up in the Mixed Fours, a winner in the Ladies Triples as well as winning the Ladies Pairs with Barbara Hill. Fran started her bowling achievements in 1982 when she won the Novice Singles at Emu Point. She has since won numerous Championship and State events. Fran was our Bowler of the Year in 2005/06 as well. She is a hard working member of our Selection Committee but she always has time to help out and offer advice to anyone who is in need of a little guidance. Well done Fran! You are a Star!

To all the winners we look forward to seeing you competing on the greens again next season. Maybe in the meantime we will see you playing on Wednesday afternoon in the Mixed Pairs competition.

Ladies Veteran’s Singles Championship

T

he 14th March was a hot day with ten starters for this event. With so few players there was no Plate competition this year. At the conclusion of day one, the numbers had been reduced to four semi finalists who would continue play in the next round.

The semi finals were between Clair Hanlon playing Monique Kopec and Lorraine Hyde playing Carmel Hyde. The match between Clair and Monique was very close with the scores being even on numerous ends. The last end saw the scores close again with Clair drawing three shots to reach the 18 up to progress to the final. The standard of bowls in his game was of a very high standard as it took 25 ends to get a result.

Carmel and Lorraine also had a real struggle with both ladies playing some excellent draw bowls. Carmel came from behind with a four on the last two ends to win and progress to the final. What a way to get to a final! It must have been very difficult for these two ladies playing against each other considering they are sister-in-laws and know one another’s bowling inside out.

The final between Carmel and Clair saw the players neck and neck all the way. The lead changed many times with Carmel finally winning with a four and a one on the 13

last two ends. Congratulations go to Carmel for winning this Veteran’s event as she played and won against some strong opposition to get to this final. To Clair, you played some great draw bowls right throughout this competition and well done for being the runner-up.

Greens and Grounds Report

M

etropolitan Bowling Club of the Year 2011/12! Wow! What an achievement.

This award is not easy to win, so every member who has contributed to getting the club to where we are at the moment should pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

One of the many things that helped us win this award is the great condition of our greens and grounds. This of course comes down to all the good work the green’s staff and the volunteers have done over the last year. If you look at the photo below, you will see just how many of you have put in the time and effort that helped us win this award. Congratulations one and all.

You will have noticed that our ‘new’ shed is now in position after being moved from the old tennis courts’ area. It will give us greater storage for all the equipment and there is a small, lockable room inside where all our dangerous chemicals can now be safely stored.

The club has been able to negotiate a new contract with Richard Cox that will see him working here for at least another year and therefore keeping our green in the condition that we have now become accustomed to. Tony and Ron will be his hard working assistants so, along with some volunteers, we will be able to continue to have great greens and grounds. Have an enjoyable winter break and then we will do it all again next season.

Croquet Report

T

he Sorrento team, ‘A Jack and Three Jills’ took out the seven week inter club C Grade competition (held at Cambridge Club) - a first for the Sorrento Club.

Glenda Laidler, Charlie Crute, Peter Hamilton and Denise Baldock climbed slowly back from next to bottom of the table after two weeks, to be in contention for the outright win at the start of the final session. A clean sweep of three games was enough to see them move ahead of the competition to take the win.

Our other team ‘First to Seven’ (Trish Klemp, Alan & Liz Wood and Paula Burnell) took on the even more daunting task of tackling the open division. They didn’t make the podium but they gave a healthy account of themselves when they had a convincing 7-2 win over the eventual second place getters. A brave effort.

Congratulations to both teams!

The Safeway Security Croquet Challenge Day was held on Saturday 19th May, this was a fun day with many members participating on the day. The winner of the day was Peter Hamilton, with runner up being Barbara Long. A few drinks and sausage sizzle was the go for the end of the day. Thank you to Barry Bradshaw from Safeway Security for sponsoring the day and to Joan, Monique & Greg for the meal at the end of the day.

special birthday milestone with fellow croquet members at the Kingsway Tavern. An enjoyable day was had by all who attended.

Caroline Russell-Browne after 30 odd years of living in sin finally tied the knot with Graeme on Magic Island, Oahu, Hawaii. No it wasn’t a shot gun wedding.

They happy couple planned it themselves to the surprise of family and friends.

Congratulations and best wishes to you both from all the members.

At the bowlers request we held a Croquet afternoon on Saturday 26th May. It was very disappointing turn up, as only three members came. That is not the end of it, as we will still go and demonstrate the game of croquet at their personal request. It is open to both Men and Ladies. You are welcome to bring friends along to try also.

Croquet is an all year round sport; we play rain, hail or shine. IT IS LIKE PLAYING A BIG GAME OF BILLIARDS. The Croquet Club would like to thank the volunteers for the work that has recently been completed for the Croquet Club. We are not going to name everyone as the list grows, but a special thank you to John Sturk for his expertise and excellent job of the shelves in our new shed and Frank Bomford for his assistance with general maintenance.

Law of the Lawn: Air Swing, i.e. you attempt to hit the ball but you miss. Is that a fault or not? The answer is NO but...! In Golf Croquet there is no fault and you replay the shot. (Rule 6c) In Ricochet, however, although it isn’t a fault as such, it is regarded as your shot and so play passes to the next player. (Rule 14c) – Judith Skeet

Coaches Corner

F

irst of all, congratulations to all those players who participated in Pennant finals and the teams that earned promotions. It will be tougher next season. Similarly congratulations and thanks to all those who helped the club to win the “Bowling Club of the Year” award. Well done all.

However, now on to a more serious note. Statistics indicate that most male members believe that our coaches are only there for others. The ladies think otherwise and their support has been excellent. During the past year, only 3 members of approx. 150 pennant players approached a coach for assistance. What does that indicate?

Our observations suggest that an estimated 30 more could benefit from a session.

If our club is to continue going forward in the higher divisions, members will need to change their attitudes and admit they have faults.(Some cannot be corrected).

Certainly we would like to hear from you. Now is the time to prepare for next season.

Umpire’s Corner

W

ith the competitive bowling season now completed umpires can now take a well earned break from officiating the many men’s and ladies events and competitions Sorrento has held during the year. All up, there has been over 200 umpire allocations made to adjudicate these events and I thank all those umpires for making themselves available and assisting in making them a success.

I am pleased to report that Sorrento players and umpires have not been involved in any umpiring disputes or unsportsmanlike incidents this year as appears to have occurred at some other clubs across the metropolitan area – ref. Jack Hi - April - May, P8 ‘From the Umpires’.

A number of umpires have successfully undertaken re-accreditation this year (required every 4 years). They are Gavin Ebsworth, Tony Friedlieb, Graeme Heard, Graeme O’Brien and yours truly.

Some “Umpiring Oddities” sent in by Ray Stapledon; Did you hear about two skippers who decided to call an umpire to measure the length of an end during the Pre-game roll up?

Men’s Selection Review

W

ell the season has now finished and all teams on Thursday and Saturday performed very creditably, so much so we won Club of the Year. We now look forward to next season.

We have been looking at finding an answer to a more pleasant Pennant Practice Program. Last season we had a problem with players arriving late for the 12.45 PM report time which gave the Selectors great difficulty in forming the teams. It would be appreciated this coming season, if players would accept a 12.30PM report time, by arriving at that time or ringing in to the office. This would assist the Selectors in preparing the teams and cards for an early start time. If you cannot assist the Selectors by reporting in this time frame, then it may have a reaction to where you play during the practice weeks.

Pennant application forms must be lodged by the end of August to assist the Selection Committee in arranging teams for the coming season. Thank you from the Selection 17

Division 3 Red Pennant win (Thursdays)

ivision 3 Red had a very good year ably led by skippers Keith Cooper, Trevor Orton and the old fox Noel Summers. The end result of this fine effort was to get promotion to second division and get to play off for the division pennant.

The teams in the play off were; Fremantle, Warnbro, Dalkeith-Nedlands and Sorrento.

The first round of the play-offs was held at the Dalkeith-Nedlands club with the home club being belted by Warnbro. Sorrento went on to win against Fremantle with a wonderful display of skilful bowling by all three leads!!.

The next round for the flag was held at the Morley Bowling club. Sorrento were up against Warnbro who may have thought that they were the favourites. As the game progressed it seemed that we thought that they were the favourites as well. Things didn’t seem to be falling our way and across the boards the scores were edging back and forth.

Trevor’s team were struggling and “the old Fox” and his team were hanging in, but some quite brilliant bowling

by Coops (against a skipper whom we reckoned was from the Premier division) was not only holding his own but gaining ground. Coops’ team of misfits managed to edge up the aggregate by one in our favour. His opposition skipper had one bowl left and drove the kitty into the ditch gaining one shot and narrowly missing 18

the second in a measure. The aggregate was tied. It had the same effect as a draw in a footy grand final, WTF, then Noel boldly announced each team would have to play another end each.

Trevor and his team had to be dragged out of the bar with his team having finished early and eaten their snacks already and away we went. Then playing quickly, as usual, managed a four up to every ones delight ‘and amazement’. Next to finish ‘the Summers Sensations’ also grabbed a four up when their opposing skipper drove an important counter out of the head.

Keith and crew, relaxed as ever, let their opposing skipper have one shot as a consolation prize? The end result, a ‘7 up’ win on the extra end and the flag was ours.

The opposition were stunned and so were we!!!

Men’s 4th Division White Does Well

A

fter 18 rounds Yokine ended top of 4 White with Warwick second, Sorrento third, Scarborough fourth and Beaumaris fifth so on Saturday 31 March 2012 our Men’s 4th Division White team played Warwick in the first round of the play-off for promotion.

Tom Nasuti’s team of Ray Dunn, Graeme Whitehorn and Stuart Cartwright and Barry Bradshaw’s team of Neville Odell, Spider Webb and Roland Hill started well.

Unfortunately Tom’s team dropped four ends. Keith Tompkin’s team of Herbie Eisenmann, John Taylor and Ken Giles picked up three shots on the 5th end. Barry’s team picked up three shots on the 6th end giving them an 8-2 lead whilst Keith’s team picked up a four on their 8th end making them 8-8.

Noel Summer’s team of Kevin Coffey, Barry Stewart and Murray Newman started well and had a six shot lead by the 5th end but dropped the next three ends but managed to hold the strong Warwick team to 7-7 on the 9th end. Barry’s team continued their good form with a 19-10 lead after 16 ends. From then on this team was unstoppable and ended up with a 24-12 win.

Tom and his team struggled a bit but picked up a five on the 15th end but with a late surge from Warwick they lost 17-24. Noel’s team picked up two threes and a four to reach 19-19 on the 16th end. Another strong finish from Warwick resulted in Noel’s team going down 22-28.

Fortunately Keith and his team picked up a five on the 11th end but then lost the next four ends. A strong finish with four shots on the 19th end and a further four shots on the 21st end gave them a two shot win.

I think Barry, Roland, Spider and Neville were the savers of the day with their 12 shot win which gave us the aggregate by one shot (86-85). Well done guys! Also well done to other three rinks and a great team effort to get us into the grand final on the Sunday.

On the Sunday morning we had to play Warwick again as they had won their Saturday afternoon game against Scarborough who had beaten Beaumaris. The Nasuti/Dunn/Whitehorn/ Cartwright team started well picking up four shots on the 1st end and three on the 3rd but unfortunately from then on struggled to stay with Warwick going down 16-23. The Bradshaw/ Hill/Webb/Odell combination started well with two shots on the 2nd end three shots on the 6th end and five shots on the 8th end. From the 12th end on Barry’s team dropped only one shot finishing 35-5.

Well done!

The Tompkins/Giles/Taylor/Eisenmann team were slow to start until the 8th end when they picked up a four followed by two two’s and another four to give them a 14-11 lead on the 12th end. From then on the game sea-sawed with Keith’s team winning 21-16. Well done!

The Summers/Newman/Stewart/Coffey were also a bit slow out of the blocks with Warwick getting to a 19-4 lead on the 11th end. Noel and his team then started to come back picking up eight shots in five ends but unfortunately did not finish strongly enough going down 13-25. The final score was 85 to Sorrento and 68 to Warwick which means “3rd Division here we come” The best rink over the two days was without a doubt Barry, Roland, Spider and Neville who carried the aggregate on both days.

Ladies Selection Review

C

ongratulations to you all on the overall performance of all teams throughout the year. We now have a team back in the Premier Division unfortunately they missed winning the pennant flag in the grand final. Well done ladies, a great team effort.

I must make mention of 5th Division. These girls played under adversity, due to the teams being decimated resulting from absences in other divisions, yet all year they never complained, tried their hardest and their attitude under the circumstances was tremendous (thanks Ladies).

A special thanks to Kevin Scammell and Jim Woodward for their support, throughout the year, when the number of ladies was insufficient to field a full 5th Division side.

Congratulations to Vonnie’s and Brenda’s teams for winning eight badges. Well done to coaches Graeme Heard, Ray Stapledon and Graeme Whitehorn who have been there every week for us a very big thank you. A big thank you also to John Watson who has given his time freely to drive the bus when I am sure he would have preferred to be out playing golf.

To the Selection Committee – you have been terrific to work with and been totally supportive all the way. Thank you Lee for organizing umpires all season, To Anne and the Ladies Committee thank you for your assistance and support throughout the journey.

The down side of the season has been the absenteeism. It is difficult to get teams up and winning if we have to make numerous changes each week to cover for those missing. To play in a pennant team is a privilege and a seasonal commitment so when you fill in the application to play pennants you are required to fill in any absences that you will have (illness and injury aside), our reserves will be formed from those who are only available for part of the season. Forfeitures cost the club money and this occurred on one occasion due to lack of numbers.

We would like to make an appeal to bowlers who would like to donate their old bowls for use in our Community bowls competition, preferably size four or less. The bowls that we currently use are very dated and need to be replaced with more recent bowls.

Did you know that a study has found that those who sleep to the left of their partners are more likely to be cheerful and positive and to cope better with stress and heavy workloads? Those who sleep on the right are more likely to wake up grumpy!

Did you hear that the European Food Safety Authority has ruled that prunes do not have a laxative effect and do not aid the normal bowel function and producers of prunes may no longer make this claim!

Did you hear that Ray Dunn backed a “horse” at the Gold Coast Casino only to be told by his son that he had in fact backed a “Dog” (a grey hound)? He was pleased when his dog won the race and he got $140!

Did you hear that in early March Sorrento’s 6 Blue team played North Perth. The team of Skipper Ken Anderson, Third Colin Bangs, Second Bob Horgan and Lead Neil McLennan all bowled magnificently to score 8 and receive a coveted 8 Badge.

Did you hear that a 79 year-old Auckland lawn bowls employee has been sentenced to six months’ community detention after swindling more than $600 000 from community grants to pay off loans used to buy pubs? Between 2006 and 2009 Noel Gibbons applied for 150 grants amounting to more than $800 000. A Department of Internal Affairs investigation found $605 550 worth of those grants were fraudulently obtained. Gibbons had said the money would be used for bowling green maintenance.

He then fabricated various quotes and invoices from contractors who later told investigators that they had never carried out the work.

Did you know several members answered the call and agreed to play mixed darts for the club and immediately made B grade? They are still full of enthusiasm after losing their first two games 10-1 and 11-0. Judy Campbell was the only winner. Pauline Bourne, a beginner, has the highest aggregate at over 40. Apparently not a single player is remotely likely to score their age with 3 darts.

Did you hear that a radio station was inviting listeners to call in with their nicknames for their wives? The best call was from a guy who called his wife “Harvey Norman”. Why? “No interest for 48 months!

Did you hear about the Australian and NZ version of Shortmat Bowls known as Indoor Biased Bowls? Short mat/ Indoor Biased Bowls is a significant participation bowling sport in the UK with over 150,000 active players and here in Australia and NZ we have approximately 100,000 participants. Played on a rolled out carpet, it 22

Did you hear that a Victorian teenager, Robert Fletcher, is already planning to challenge for next year’s World Croquet Championship? The 18 year old, narrowly lost the international grand final in Adelaide on Sunday. Fletcher is the youngest Australian to hold the national title and the first Australian to make the international grand final. He says he wants to win the international crown next year.

Broadband for Seniors Program.

his is a Government sponsored program to help Seniors gain access to the Internet, send and receive e-mails and be familiar with the use of Skype. Officially this is for all Senior club members and non club members but I will help anyone who needs it.

I am sure that the more exposure we can give this the greater the benefit to the Club. I am in attendance every Monday from 1pm - 2pm but I am willing to help outside of this time slot if at all possible. Some members may find this time inconvenient. A Trip on the Queen Mary 2

O

ur newsletter editor asked me to write something about our recent trip on the Queen Mary 2 so here goes. When we boarded in Cape Town we were told that very high winds were forecast and departure would be delayed. In true British style and with Cunard’s impeccable manner the ship’s band was assembled to play on the quay to celebrate our “delayed” 5pm departure. We didn’t actually sail until 7am the next morning, a 14 hour delay.

During the voyage we were reminded by the Commodore (a posh name for the Senior Captain in the Cunard fleet) that we were on an ocean liner and not a cruise ship. A 24

liner’s hull is designed to cope with rough seas as its main function is to cross the North Atlantic between Southampton and New York. (A posh name for an expensive ferry).

Cunard’s philosophy is to reproduce the 1920’s golden age of cruising by retaining the art deco design of the ship’s interior. Queen Mary 2’s facilities include fifteen restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, a ballroom, a theatre, and the first planetarium at sea. There are also kennels on board, as well as a nursery.

They have also reinstated the dress codes of the era by dressing for dinner. There were four formal nights with black tie or at least dark suit and evening dress for ladies. Fortunately there were five semi-formal nights with jacket and tie and cocktail dress for ladies and five smart casual when you were allowed to drop the tie but not the jacket. Smart casual was still required for the ladies. They unfortunately didn’t have to drop anything! There were options for those who did not wish to comply, but this type of cruise is not recommended for the shorts and thongs brigade.

The quality of food was first class and the drinks cheaper than most Perth pubs.

You were allowed to bring your own wine on board, but corkage had to be paid in the restaurants. Each day about 950 bottles of wine and champagne are drunk.

Apparently 4188 eggs, 287 litres of fruit juice and 2600 tea bags are used.

For those who want to be pampered and rejuvenated, the ship features the Canyon Ranch Spa Club. Athletes can play basketball and virtual reality golf and there’s a state-of-the-art gym. You can go to the theatre or cinema or visit the planetarium. The highlights were the excellent entertainment programs with well- known West End entertainers one of which was James Galway.

A popular lecture was by Sir David Frost on his experiences and he brought the house down with his anecdotes. One story was about a notable British politician who was notoriously fond of the drink and who was attending an official reception in a South American city when he spied a gorgeous creature dressed in purple so he strolled over and requested a dance. The reply was: “There are three reasons why I will not dance with you, one, you have had too much to drink, two, there is no music and three, I am the Archbishop of Lima”.

Another unscheduled bit of excitement was when there was a blackout on board in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The engines ceased to function so we were adrift for 30 minutes. The Commodore was doing an interview which was terminated so that he could make his way to the bridge to take charge of the emergency. When he resumed the interview a day later he was asked how long the Queen Mary 2 would be able to drift without power. He replied “until the beer runs out.”

I would highly recommend the Queen Mary 2 provided you don’t mind the dress 25

regulations and contrary to popular belief it is much less expensive than most other cruise lines.

Junior bowls still being promoted at our club

I

n conjunction with Nick Lambert (Australian Sports Commission), Rene Farrell (Bowls Australia) and Tony Bourne, there is currently a program of after school bowls running with Our Lady of Grace Primary School, North Beach and Hawker Park Primary School, Warwick.

Our intentions are to bridge the coaching at after school activities to bowling sessions at the club. The children are engaged in one hour school sessions of bowls culminating in playing “revised rules” games at our club over 4 weeks, which began on Tuesday 29th May. Thanks to a grant of $1500 obtained through the ASC, our club is now in possession of 7 sets of Junior Ace bowls which helps to present a “real feel” experience of bowling on grass greens. The trial program will be reviewed after the event by all interested parties.

Rene Farrell and I have proposed a follow up Saturday morning bowls event at our club, please see the notice below which has already been e-mailed to members. We have contacted most West Coastal clubs and have invited them to send teams of 4.

We believe there are juniors out there who do not necessarily play the dominant sport’s codes. A Saturday morning competition is our aim and as such we hope our members will support our endeavours, particularly the June 30th event. It is in our interest as a club to pursue this as having junior members and the possibility of their parents participating will certainly strengthen our club.

The Job Interview

A

major International company was looking to hire someone for an important position, so they interviewed dozens of applicants and narrowed their search down to three people from different parts of the world.

In an attempt to pick one of them, they decided to give them all the same question to answer within 24 hours, and the one with the best answer would get the job. The question was: “A man and a woman are in bed, nude. The woman is lying on her side with her back facing the man, and the man is lying on his side facing the woman’s back. What is the man’s name? After the 24 hours was up, the three were brought in to give their answers. The first from Canada, says “My answer is that there IS no answer.”

The second, from the United Kingdom, says my answer is, that there is no way to determine the answer with the information we were given.”

The third one from Australia says “I’m not exactly sure, but I have it narrowed down to two names. It’s either: Willie Turner or Willie Nailer.” The Australian got the job!

Wally Smith Silver Chain Charity Day 2012

A

grand total of over $25 000 has been raised by members of the Sorrento Bowling Club over the nineteen years this event has been held. All of the money raised, including the amount of $1158.50 raised at this years event, has been donated to the Silver Chain.

This year’s charity day was held on Friday 16 March and was a marvellous success.

Over seventy bowlers participated on the greens and the names of the winning team on the day, Neville Cleary, Denis O’Brien and Herbie Eisenmann, will be recorded on the perpetual trophy. They were also each awarded a bottle of wine donated by the Sorrento Bowling Club.

Thanks are owed to the principal organizers of the fund raising aspect of the day’s events, Barbara Stow and Sylvia McLaughlan, and to the other volunteers who assisted. While it is not possible to record the names of all club members who helped with the fund raising, helped to organize and run the days event, or who made 28

Geoff Murray Wins Brownlow The count to identify the best performing player in the men’s Saturday One White Division during the 2011/12 season was conducted on Friday 20th April 2012.

Players were able to score up to 7 points from each of their colleagues in the team (maximum of 21 points per game) and could include in their overall total, a maximum of 15 games. Many thanks go to John Godfrey and his wife Robyn for maintaining the votes throughout the year.

A total of 22 players were used in the 1st Division during the year with 7 players playing all the games and a total of 12 players playing 15 games or more – all being in the mix to win the Brownlow Trophy. After a tight count, Geoff Murray was declared the winner by 5 votes with Ron Kuziela finishing second and Richard Bone finishing third, a further 6 votes behind Ron. Geoff had an outstanding year playing as a lead and was responsible for giving his rink a great start throughout the games with bowls in the head.

The winning of the trophy by Geoff demonstrates how players and skippers see the importance of how a good lead can contribute to the success of a team. The top 6 players in the vote were Geoff Murray (235 points), Ron Kuziela (230), Richard Bone (224), Peter Crow (220), John Brown (215) and Alan Anderson( 212).

Club Captain John Abercrombie not only volunteered his services to cook the BBQ but also attended to present the trophy to Geoff. Those that attended the count participated in a fine meal put together by Judy Brown and Gaie Bone and from all reports, a fine night was had by all.

Sponsorship Report

T

his my final report as Sponsorship Officer of the Sorrento Bowling Club. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain sponsorship from the business community as competition from other sports is becoming more competitive.

Companies are now becoming more selective as to who and what to support. It is becoming a trend to support an event that will attract attention from a wide cross section of the sport involved. The Police and Nurses Credit Union is a classic example. They were only prepared to sponsor the ladies gala day if there were a certain number participants from across the metropolitan area.

I am recommending that we discontinue advertising Red Rooster, Northside Meats and IGA as neither have paid monies for this season. The signs should be removed or sold to another potential Sponsor. HSBC Bank is interested in taking on one of those signs as they have paid a substantial amount of money. Once the Treasurer has removed these from our books the figures for sponsorship account will alter.

Another Company to be removed is the Weather Wizard as they also are not continuing sponsorship from reports I have received. There are several signs above the Bar that should also be removed. However to remove them would be unsightly.

I also believe that invoices should be sent out to existing sponsors as soon as possible to coincide with the financial year so these companies are not hit with another impost. I realize most are only small amounts. However in these times all pennies are counted. I would suggest that they are sent out as early as the end of April each year.

If possible a person that takes on this position should either be still in business or just retired to still be able to interact with the companies we are targeting for sponsorship.

Once again I urge all members to use our sponsors whenever possible and to let the Executive know of a potential sponsor.

Twilight Twos - Season Wrap

T

hank you to all who have participated this year in our “Twilight Twos” competition. We have had some fun, haven’t we? Particular thanks to Richard Fermoyle and Ken Giles who have been there to collect your green fees and arrange the scorecards. It is not easy when players turn up late (or don’t turn up at all) and if anyone has missed out on a game due to odd numbers, we’re sorry. Thanks, too, to 33

the club who have chipped in to supplement the year’s final prizes.

The champion bowler for this season is Mike Hodge. Mike’s best 10 scorecards aggregated 147 shots, to just pip Trevor Orton on 146 shots. The best of the ladies was Jane Watson with 40 shots up on her best 10 cards. These three bowlers take home today’s prizes. Some of the top scores were Mike Hodge 147, Trevor Orton 146, Colin Campbell 134, Neville Odell 134, Euie Tennant 132, Barry Stewart 106, Rob Tozer 106 and Stuart Wright 101.

There were 208 matches recorded, spread over 20 weeks with one week rained off and one week’s cards misplaced (sorry). $5,824 was collected in green fees and $1,664 distributed in prize money and “lucky fivers”. Congratulations to all winners.

And of course a few dollars spent across the bar. 112 different players took part this year, and 41 of those played more than 10 times, while 33 played only once.

On the last evening we were privileged to welcome “God to Sorrento”. The photo alongside shows John “God” Goddard who teamed up with Cal O’Donnell against yours truly and Euie Tennant.

Some brilliant bowling from Euie resulted in a God and Cal losing by a narrow margin.

Thank you for your support. Only 6 months or so and we start all over again.

20th National “Friendship” Carnival

arly in May 452 bowlers from NSW, VIC, SA, ACT, QLD and WA enjoyed the 20th National “Friendship” Carnival held in Perth for the Past Presidents Association of Australia. A great time was had by all the participants. Our club’s welcome and hospitality was appreciated by all the participants. A Certificate of Appreciation was received and is on display at the bar.

Our 4th Annual Art Exhibition

O

ur Annual Art Exhibition this year was held on March 16th and was very well attended. We would like to apologize for the absence of the “Wine Tasting” 34

which was advertised. The Company who had agreed to present the wines “forgot” the appointment, and we were unaware of this until they failed to appear on the night.

We were very disappointed.

This year nine of our members exhibited 49 works. They included paintings by Sandy Hogg, Ken Hollick, Eileen McRae, Barbara O’Brien Marie Sturk, Janet Siney and Beth McCormack. The Photo graphics were by Brett Dunn and Ceramics by Pauline Marsden, Ken Hollick donated 3 excellent oil paintings, the proceeds going straight to the club. A total of 4 paintings were sold, and a commission of 10% of all sales goes to the club.

We felt that the exhibits maintained our very high standard and would like to thank club members for their continued support of this popular event.

Friday Night Community Bowls

A

nother season of Community Bowls has passed and once again this event has proved very popular and successful. Twenty teams vied for the win during the Friday competition with no one team really making a clean break from the pack and this kept the leader board quite tight throughout the twelve week competition.

Although competition was in evidence on a Friday night there was a little bit of the ‘wow it’s the end of the week’ atmosphere which was made even more so with the antics of Kev ‘the spruiker’ Coffey out amongst the crowd with his drinks wagon.

The crowd was kept entertained during play and eagerly took part in the sometimes dubious raffles and competitions that were run.

There were many helpers during the season and I thank them all, Muz Newman & 35

Ron ‘The Hobble’ Rogers cooked up a storm at the BBQ, Pat Dichiera made sure every cent was accounted for, Derry Ellis left no stone unturned in selling every last spot on the raffles and John Farmer and Keith Cooper put in to help with the work load.

A big thank you goes to Joan and her crew in the kitchen for the tears they shed in preparing the mountain of onions each week, (thought I would give a hand one week and I still weep when I think of it). The presentation of the food each week was terrific and went a long way to help make the evenings a success.

The finish was tight with S.A.N.Z. (Singapore, Australia, New Zealand) running out winners by one point.

Tuesday Night Community Bowls

E

ven with the late start to the season waiting for A and B greens to be ready, Community Bowls on Tuesday nights had a very successful season. 20 teams competed this year and when one team had to sadly withdraw mid-term due to personal reasons, we were able to field a temporary team to complete the season.

Under the influence of some (or was that some under the influence), but anyway, we introduced some background music during play that gave somewhat of a party atmosphere that made for cheers all round.

Team Astros headed by Wayne Smith, son of members Ray and Ethel Smith left it until the last game of the season to clinch the winner’s trophy, a lovely futuristic trophy it was too, along with a team dinner on the coast. They went on to represent Sorrento Bowling Club at the Corporate Shield played at Safety Bay against other club winners. We congratulate not only Team Astros but all teams that participated at Sorrento this year. Great people each one of them and some great bowls as well as fun bowls was played by all.

Due to a mix up of dates for our travel to Brisbane, Barry Stewart had to officiate on the last night, so I pass my thanks to Barry for that last minute call up.

Come November 2012, we do it all again.

Darts Report

T

he new dart year is under way. Sorrento has entered 4 sides this year, 2 in the Sports and Bowling Club competition and 2 in the Blue Water Dart competition.

Sorrento did not enter any sides into the West Coast this year due to the format which only had 4 players per side and all games were played best of 3. The 4 player format meant all players were either playing, scoring or marking not giving any time for a quite drink and conversation, which of course is important to all social darts players. The best of 3 for all games also meant the night was not finishing till 11pm to 11.30pm. Although it is still early in the season Sorrento has 3 sides in the four and we are all looking forward to another successful year. But, as always, the most important thing is to enjoy the company and the night out.

Tribute To Phil Kimberley

P

hil was not just an excellent bowler – he was a dedicated club member and most of all he was a genuine mate. Phil is survived by his wife of 43 years (Chris) and his two daughters (Jody and Leanne). Those who knew him well would have recognised his devotion and love to all members of his family.

Prior to joining our club, Phil was a member at Cambridge and North Beach clubs.

I can testify through interaction with current members of both those clubs where he was a valued and highly respected member. He gave his time willingly to our club having been secretary for a number of years. That is where I first met Phil as we worked together through some challenging financial times.

On a more personal note, I have great memories of being his partner for Monday Pairs at Cambridge. He was generous to a fault at providing tips and encouragement to improve my game. The fact that we were both avid West Perth supporters was always a lively topic of conversation. However it was really our weekend trips to the South West for bowling carnivals with Phil’s caravan in tow that cemented our mateship. We had a lot of fun. We miss you Phil –Trevor Peters 37

large crowd of family and friends gathered at Pinnaroo on Tuesday May 1st to commemorate the life of Barbara Claffey. Many members of the Bowling club and the Probus club were present.

Barbara was a valued member of the Sorrento Bowling club for a number of years and served on the Ladies’ Match Committee for more than two seasons.

She was a quiet achiever and well respected by us all.

Barbara was also a member of Probus and their ladies formed a roster to spend time with her over her last extremely difficult months, especially so that Norm could have some time to attend to essential matters.

It seems so unfair that she was taken at such an early stage of her retirement, and our hearts go out to Norm at this time.

May she now rest in peace.

Lets End on a Light Note with a Romantic Dinner

A

man and woman were having a quiet, romantic dinner in a fine restaurant. They were gazing lovingly at each other and holding hands. Their waitress, taking another order at a table a few steps away, suddenly noticed the man slowly sliding down his chair and under the table, but the woman acted unconcerned. The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight under the table.

Still, the woman appeared calm and unruffled, apparently unaware her dining companion had disappeared.

The waitress went over to the table and said to the woman, “Pardon me, ma’am, but I think your husband just slid under the table. “The woman calmly looked up at her and said, “No, he didn’t. He just walked in the door.”

Dorothy Dix, our Agony Aunt gives advice Dear Dorothy I keep getting irritated and grumpy when new (and experienced) bowlers persist in talking to my bowls as they arrive at the head. Page one of the “Etiquette Manual” says this is an unacceptable practice. What should I do?

– John Dear John Before your bowl leaves your hand you need to treat it like a child as once it leaves you there is nothing that can be done to change its trajectory except for a bit of wind. So remember that instruction from the opposition for your bowl to go through a gap will have no effect. Some say bowls are deaf lumps of plastic so this will also make them ignore the opposition’s nasty and snide comments – Dorothy Dix Dear Dorothy Is it really necessary for some of our Skippers to be so rude and critical about the players in their team? After all everyone is trying their best and if a Skipper shows by their body language or their harsh comments, that they are displeased by a bowl, it is unlikely that subsequent bowls will be any better – A demotivated bowler Dear “Demotivated Bowler” We are lucky that we have some very motivational Skippers in our club. These Skips manage to find something positive to say about most bowls and their encouraging remarks bring out the best in their players. Try and ignore negative Skips and remember when you are a Skipper one day that there is a way to motivate and encourage rather than criticise and demotivate – Dorothy Dix 39
