Presidents Report

As tabled at the Annual General meeting Sunday 12th June 2011 When I decided to take on the position of President six years ago I did not realize the tenure would be for so long. It took nearly a season to fully grasp the enormity of the task. However I do not regret that decision.

Since taking office I have worked with many people within the Club and outside the Club environment. There have been differences of opinions on various issues but we have managed to work through these issues to obtain a satisfactory outcome for the benefit of the Club and its members.

The only down side over the years has been the decline in the standard of the greens over the past two years. However I think the Executive has made the correct decision this time around and there will be a marked improvement over the next 12 to 18 months. This may not be quick enough for a minority of members.

We have steadily improved our financial position over several seasons and we also have increased membership to a point of being one of the biggest Clubs in Perth.

The treasurer’s report covers our financial position so I will leave it to Richard Fermoyle who will present the report in Barry Bradshaw’s absence.

With the assistance of the City of Joondalup we have upgraded the Clubhouse. New furniture was purchased to compliment the upgrade to the premises. The bar is being upgraded with a new facia for the display of goods available for purchase. The beer taps will be upgraded in June to allow a more streamlined service to our members and visitors.

The kitchen has been upgraded by the City of Joondalup and whilst it is still not large enough, in appearance it is definitely an improvement.

A highlight of my time as President was to present the Club to members of the Australian Police Bowls Carnival that was conducted in April 2010. There is a strong chance that we may be asked to host the event again in 2013.

Over the years we have had many tireless and dedicated volunteers to assist in maintaining the appearance of the Club and the surrounds and in assisting the greens staff to maintain the greens and equipment. To all of those wonderful people I thank you all for your assistance.

The City of Joondalup is implementing a five-year master plan for the Percy Doyle reserve. They wish to reduce the number of Club premises from the present number to three major buildings to cover the 42 Clubs that use the reserve. This means we

may be asked to share with other Clubs. This can work but a lot of work will have to be done to appease all parties. This basically means that we are restricted in some ways as to what we can do to our section.

We have had some preliminary talks with the City but we have not committed to anything. We completed a survey put out by the City, which asked all Clubs of their opinions and wishes for the new Complex and a City representative addressed the Executive on the master plan. We are awaiting further contact from the City on further meetings.

Our match committees have done a great job in organizing events for members and events that attract outside competitors. I can assure you that it is not an easy task to arrange the Clubs fixture having to allow for Bowls WA events and events like the Police Bowls Carnival. This season we will host two days of competition by the Australian Past Presidents National Carnival. We have been advised that there could be in excess of 140 competitors that we will have to cater for. Another test for our dedicated kitchen volunteers.

All committees have performed their tasks to the best of their abilities and the Club should be grateful for the time that these dedicated persons have sacrificed for the benefit of other members.

In closing I once again thank all members for their valued advice and constructive suggestions when warranted. I also take this opportunity to congratulate members who have committed to the Executive and committees for the coming season. – Ian Marshall

Secretary’s Report I present this, my final report as secretary of the club, with some mixed feelings.

Due to some health issues which started some eighteen months ago, I had decided that I would complete my term, and then allow myself the luxury of being able to undertake some travel, which had been put on hold for a while, and whilst still wishing to be associated with the club, will continue as a regular member. Of course I will assist as necessary, and trust that the incoming committee get the same level of satisfaction that I have gained over the years.

The year has not been without some concerns. Our first and major concern has been the greens, and it was fairly obvious that our last full season was not completed without some complications due to lack of suitable greens. The Executive were addressing this, however it is not as simple as saying to the green keeper that he has to go, as we were not satisfied, and we were obliged to go through a fairly lengthy

process of warnings and directives, before we could get to the situation that we could ask him to leave. Whilst he was a very personable guy, at the end of the day, he did not have the knowledge that we needed for a green keeper at our club. By resigning, this process was shortened considerably.

We have since appointed Richard Cox as a consultant/green keeper on a twelve month contract. We are confident that this will assist us, as he is familiar with our greens, familiar with the grass that we have (Santa Anna), and the majority of bowlers would appreciate that the greens at Osborne Park are usually of a high standard, which is where he is also the green keeper. All this has been done with the approval of the Osborne Park Club, and we thank them for their support and co-operation. So we welcome Richard on board, and trust that the members will assist us by allowing him time to rectify the damage that has been done. I am sure that we will have better greens by the time Pennants recommence.

We had also previously employed Karin as our office support staff member, and this proved to be of great value to the club. There were some members that were not in agreement with this move, but it allowed me as well as the Treasurer and President, not to have to spend quite as much time at the club as was otherwise necessary. Karin was manning the office, as well as assisting myself with my duties, completing quite a lot of work for the Treasurer, as well as keeping the executive fully informed of the happenings around the club. Unfortunately she decided that she needed more hours than we were prepared to offer, and left for a full time position with another firm. In hindsight, perhaps if we had offered more hours, we may have retained this valuable resource.

However, at the time that Karin left, I was going to be away for some time for health reasons, the President was going interstate for RSL bowls, and we did not have a Chairman of Bar, and the Treasurer and I were covering this position. Our previous chairman of the bar had sought some time off for health and other reasons, and had indicated to the committee that he did not wish to have a more permanent role.

As a result, we were in a difficult position, in that we needed someone to cover some of these jobs, and it was fairly obvious that this was not going to come from within the membership, as the time necessary was not something that our volunteers were prepared to put in.

We were made aware that Alison Moulton was available, as Osborne Park had made some changes to their structure, and after several discussions with her, she was appointed as Secretary/Manager of the club. She would assume the role of running the bar, with requirement to undertake purchasing and receipt of stock, management of staff, as well as being responsible for manning the office and undertaking majority of the work previously completed by the Secretary.

Unfortunately not all members of the club were in agreement with this course of action, but at the time, we had little alternative other than to make some changes.

There were a number of members that did not understand the reasons for this change, and hopefully given time they are now appreciative of the need for these decisions.

Subsequently, and after some discussion with various members of the club, it was decided that we would change the title to that of Club Manager rather than Secretary/ Manager, and this would then obviate the need for the position of Secretary of the club, to be deleted from the positions available on the executive.

During all of this membership of the club has continued to grow, and it is necessary that we all work together to enable this club to grow, and if the greens and the internal workings of the club are in place, we can make additional efforts to attract new members.

The President has made mention of the City of Joondalup plans for this reserve, and this has hampered our plans to some degree. Part of this is the option of installing one or more synthetic or carpet surfaces. We have gained quite a bit of information on this subject, and will ask members at the AGM, just how they feel on this subject. It would seem that we need to make a start sooner rather than later, but in any event this is approximately a three year process, given that Department of Sport and Recreation, as well as the City give their approval for finance in order for us to proceed. If they do not approve such sharing of costs, it is fairly obvious that we cannot complete such a project on our own.

In conclusion, I wish to thank those of the club that have assisted me over the last few years whilst I held the position of Secretary, and there have been many, especially when my health was giving me some concerns. My only regret in recent times has been the apparent unrest amongst some of the members, and I attribute this mainly to the fact that the greens were not up to standard, and that some decisions made by the Executive did not sit well with all of our members. However in difficult circumstances, I feel that we have made progress, and a lot of misunderstanding could have been cleared fairly quickly, if members were prepared to discuss their concerns with the right people, and not just rely on gossip and innuendo.

Men’s Match Committee The Men’s Championship Fours was closely contested for most of the game with John Brown’s team of John Abercrombie, Mike Carrigy and Richard Bone holding 5 or 6 shots up. But slowly Ian Linford’s team of Ron Rogers, Keith Cooper and Ray Dunn pegged them back to be 2 shots down on the last end. John Brown’s two bowls 10

missed the target and Ian on his last bowl was able to move the jack to win by one shot 28-27. Well done especially Ron Rogers who played from his wheel chair.

The Men’s Fours Plate was won by Mick Martin, Brian Lucas, Wayne Grey and Kevin Price Fifty-seven men entered the Men’s’ Singles which was played off in sections of three.

There were some surprises which made the tipping competition difficult. Tiger Hogan was able to predict twelve of the nineteen winners. It was interesting to see section one had three Barry’s (Bradshaw, Stewart and Jones) playing each other.

Steve Draper did well and managed to beat last year’s winner Ron Kuziela in a marathon game consisting of 31 ends and 124 bowls each. Steve eventually lost to Peter Crow in the semi-finals. Peter after being down 9-17 won 7 ends in a row to lead 2117 eventually winning 25/20.

In the other semi Bruce Eagles got off to a good start against Graeme O’Brien and led 16-8 after 14 ends. Graeme picked up a 3 and a 4 on the 16th and 17th ends to narrow the gap to 19-15. However Bruce was too good and ended up winning 26-17.

The final between Peter Crow and Bruce Eagles was closely contested. With Bruce leading 23-17, Peter picked up a 4 to get to 23-21. Bruce then got a single but Peter followed this with a 3 to go into the last end at 24 each. On this last end Bruce was able to draw a resting toucher which Peter just failed to dislodge.

In the Veteran’s Singles Norm Claffey did well beating Brian Saul and Graeme Heard in the sectional play offs. He then lost to Ray Dunn. In the finals Ray Dunn played Neville Cleary – a combined age of 165 years! The final was exciting with scores being tied at 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20. At 23-23 Ray got a 4 to take the title.

The Veteran’s Mixed Pairs was won by Graeme Heard and Myrtle Raven, for the second year running, with 4+25. Close behind with 4+24 were Dick Currie and Clair Hanlon. Third place was won by Stan McCullagh and Marie Smart. The morning prize was won by Niel and Eleanor Adams (a special birthday prize for Niel) and the afternoon prize went to Fran Bracknell and Ray Stapledon, The event was enjoyed by all. Marie had to ask one competitor for his Birth Certificate as he appeared to be too young to participate!!! Another complaint was about to be lodged with Bowls WA when Lee Leach arrived in her whites but, when it was established that she was the Umpire of the day, it was dropped!!! Special thanks go to Russell Lockwood who filled in at short notice to even the numbers. Although he was under the qualifying age, he was given special dispensation by the organisers to play.

Ladies Match Report Since the last newsletter we have completed the Ladies competitions for the season.

Congratulations to Coral Smith who beat Jane Watson in the singles final. In the Plate event Beth McCormack beat Annie Taylor.

In a closely contested final of the Ladies Fours Judy Campbell, Pauline Bourne, Emily Dunn and Marie Smart beat Nelly Heard, Vonnie King, Bev Cherry and Eileen McRae. Moira Dean beat Clair Hanlon in the Ladies Veterans Singles with Judy Campbell beating Annie Taylor in the Plate event.

Wednesday afternoon Mixed Pairs is being well attended. Those wishing to participate must submit their names by 12.15 pm. Combinations can be mixed or two ladies but two men cannot enter.

Men’s Pennants Well another Pennant season has come to a close. The good news is that 1 Blue has finally got promotion after years of getting to the finals and narrowly missing out.

This year they gained promotion with two rounds still to be played. In the play off for the flag, they met Mount Pleasant and lost by 5 points.

Good luck in 1 White next year.

3 White and 5 White got into the play off’s but unfortunately lost all their games and 3 Gold got relegated.

On Thursday we fared better. 2 Blue battled all season with Quinns Rock for the top spot but narrowly missed out. They went into the play-off but having lost a few players, went out in the first round.

Five teams went into the play-off and three got into the finals with two of our third divisions gaining promotion, 3 Gold 1 played Quinns Rock at Mount Lawley and won 60-44 and 3 Blue playing South Perth at Victoria Park won 51-49. 4 Red played Beaumaris at Warwick and lost by six points.

3 White were also unlucky not to get into the finals, they played Nollamara at Lake Monger, two rinks were finished and Sorrento was plus 1 on the aggregate, the third rink with one end to play was 17-17 with the last bowl to come, Sorrento was holding shot, the opposition Skipper had driven his first bowl and missed everything, but with his second bowl, he came in, wicked off a front bowl, and took Sorrento bowl’s clean out and won by 4 points. Of the 504 bowls played that afternoon, the last one was the winner and Sorrento looked on in disbelief.

We had one relegation and we lost 3 Gold 2. We started the season with 4 third divisions and next season we will have one.

Thanks to my fellow selectors, Neville Cleary, Tiger Hogan, Lindsay Baker and John Brown. I have enjoyed working with you and I hope everyone enjoys their winter break.

Ladies’ Pennants Well another season of Pennants has finished and unfortunately we have lost our Premier division and now have two teams in 1 White.

2 Blue were unlucky as they only lost the division by half a point, so now we have a 3rd division. The rest of the teams did very well finishing between 4th position and 6th position. Again we had several players out with ill health but hope to see them all well and back to playing next season.

I will be sorry to finish my term as a selector and have had many enjoyable times and some challenging ones over the last 4 years. I would like to thank all the girls who have helped and assisted me over this time and wish the new committee lots of luck.

Ladies’ Delegate Report For the first time since its introduction in 2004, the Bowls WA Inter Region Round Robin Shield was won by the Northern Region. Congratulations to the Sorrento ladies who were chosen to participate in the event. Next year’s competition will be hosted by the Southern Region.

To facilitate decisions regarding continuation of play in extreme weather conditions, clubs will be asked to purchase a thermometer to record temperatures.

A panel of delegates will meet to review nominations for the Club of the Year award.

The winners will be announced at the Bowls WA Awards night.

A Club Presidents forum will be held at Cambridge Bowling Club on 14th June at 6.30 pm.

All regions expressed concern and dissatisfaction at the long, interrupted ladies’ Pennant season. To be reviewed for the 2011/12 programme. A review of the current field of play rules has been undertaken. Any changes made will be included in the new fixture book. Gail Susac has resigned from the position of Chairman of the Umpires Committee.

The Life of “Brians” Could all Sorrento bowling club members please take note that, at the last “Brians” meeting, held on Saturday 5th February, it was unanimously agreed that in future all good bowls played by a “Brian” should be acknowledged by other club members as “good bowl B3” or “good bowl B6” and not “good bowl Brian” as this leads to too many Brian’s ears pricking up and, consequently, losing concentration on their game.

The “Brians” request that club members refer to the list below so they know the appropriate “Brians” code number.

Croquet Report My two years at the helm of Sorrento croquet club is nearly at an end and it is now time for me to wish the new committee good luck. However before I leave, I would like to thank the present committee for their work. (I know some members think that the committee do nothing and it is a waste of time – how wrong they are!)

I especially wish to thank Judith for her constant nagging regarding the state of the area where we play, the greens, sheds and shade. I feel that during the next few months with the help of Tony Pilgrim, things will improve. Also to the members who have confided in me, with personal problems – you know who you are – I wish you happiness and better health during 2011. Very best wishes –Kate Taylor

Darts Report Here we are already at the half way mark of the home and away darts season. Our two Division 1 teams are performing well with Team1 captained by Tony David sitting at the top of the ladder and team 2 in fourth spot. Division 2 is languishing in third last spot – an unusual position for this team which in past years has taken off the minor premiers Pennant finishing at the top of the ladder.

Division 3 is well placed in fifth position, only percentage out of the four. Division 4 are playing like champions heading the ladder.

Wayne Clegg heads the first division Club averages with 76.07, closely followed by Paul Clark with 76.00 and an incredible twelve 180s; Howard Jones with 75.18; Tony David with 73.05; and Dave Methven with 72.69.

Second division averages are headed by Spider Webb with a 57; third division by Barry Bradshaw with a 45.83; and fourth division by Des Bennett with a 41.85.

On the Association front, Paul Clark and Howard Jones recently won the first division pairs and Bob Mulroy and Tom Dowling took off the third division pairs. Well done to these players.

Unfortunately one of our players, George Omond is seriously ill. I first met George (now in his eighties and only giving darts away this year because of ill health) when I played at the Swanbourne and Shenton Park hotels back in the late sixties. George was my non-playing captain in the very first Under 25 Competition held back in 1972. Naturally we won. George has made a wonderful contribution to darts over more than fifty years. As an exceptional dart player, George has made numerous State teams, captaining several of these sides. He has travelled throughout Australia playing 16

in veterans and other dart competitions, achieving considerable success. George is a thoroughly wonderful gentleman who has established himself as the elderly statesman of the sport, being an inspiration to many dart players including myself.

Darts versus Bowlers Day It was great to see Pat Sweeney back on the green, strutting his stuff, at the annual Darts versus Bowlers Competition on Sunday April 18. The competition kicked off at 10am with a “spider”, followed by a game of scroungers, with the main event starting at 1.30 that afternoon. Alan Partington won the spider and Wayne Olive the scroungers.

The main game of 21 ends was keenly contested with the bowlers looking to gain some kind of unfair advantage over the kind and accommodating dart players right from the start. Mick Martin’s team ended their game with a two shot lead over the dart side led by Tony Kay. Craig Grisbrook put in a solid performance but the starring role went to Mick Martin who drew shot within a foot of the ditch to pinch the shot off Tony Kay, following Tony’s skilful drive. Juris Lorens led his dart side to a strong seventeen shot win over the bowlers side led by Wayne Olive.

The most controversial win was that of Ron Kuziela, who relied on the exceptional skills of a dart player in Eddie Tassone to steal a twenty shot lead at the end of the day, over the dart side led by Des Bennett. Reports were that Herbie put in a solid performance as lead.

Under the Lucas/Duckyourhead formula (similar to that used in cricket for raininterrupted games), Ron Kuziela’s side would normally lose one-third of their points for playing a dart player. This, when rounded up, would reduce their lead to thirteen shots giving the dart players the overall aggregate win by two shots. However, in the usual spirit that dart player’s show for fairness and compassion, this rule was not applied on this occasion and the bowlers won the day by five shots.

All who attended the day had a great time, full of fun and merriment – which after all is the aim of the day.

Did you hear?

Did you know that a size 4 bowl rotates about 70 times when it travels 27 metres on its way to the jack? This means that to correct for a bowl that is a metre short you need to give it 2 and a half extra revolutions. A great deal of finesse is therefore required for small variations in length! (As we all know!) ☺☺☺☺☺ 17

Did you know that Niel and Eleanor Adams celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in March 2011? ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you know that when you rearrange the letters in “Election Result” you can come up with “Lies – lets recount”. Coral Smith tells me you can also rearrange “Motherin-law” to “Woman Hitler” and “Slot Machines” to “Cash lost in me”. ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you know that Ken and Nora Giles will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June 2011? Well done Nora! Nora tells me Ken is a bit of a tiger as can be seen from this photo. ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear former PM Kevin Rudd has notched up a staggering 384,000km in air travel since becoming Foreign Minister - the equivalent of flying to the moon ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear that Barry Stewart “nearly” beat a One Blue Skipper in the Over 60’s State Singles? Ask Barry for a detailed description of the game when you have plenty of time available. ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear Frank Lilley, Graham Heard, Trevor Peters and Lindsay Baker won an “Eight Badge” against Kalamunda in Division 3 White. This was a first for Frank and Lindsay. Graham has five already and your editor is trying to find our how many Trevor has won! Well done guys! ☺☺☺☺☺

A little bird told me that Euie Tennant got a big kiss from a County Week bowler. All we know is that she was from Wonthella! ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you know that one of the Beaumaris 2 White Skippers has to wear his long sleeved jumper during every Pennant game irrespective of the weather conditions?

The one week he took it off and the team lost so he no longer has any choice in the matter!

10-Year-old Boy takes out Men’s Title Both the silky skills and fresh face of Seamus Curtin are going down a treat at Plimmerton Bowling Club in New Zealand. Asked what attracted him to lawn bowls, Seamus gives the sort of response you expect from a 10-year-old; simple and emphatic. “I just like it.” He considers his forehand his strength, while his shot selection and composure under pressure are highly regarded by the club seniors.

Seamus’ young hands favour a size two bowl, however, the club shirt he plays in doesn’t fit quite so well.

Complaints Department Apologies to Sonia and Ted McGrady and Dennis Saunders for mis-spelling their names. Once again we may blame our proof-reader Denise Odell. Remember it is irresponsible to blame your Editor! Note from current proof-reader: Anyone who would like this job is most welcome to take over any time they wish!

We have also received complaints that our newsletter takes too long to read. Now that the Executive Committee have asked us to cut from five newsletters a year to four we have no difficulty filling the pages especially if we include a few jokes. It is sometimes difficult to know what to leave out and how to retain a balance between adverts, club news and jokes.

We had one complaint from a member’s wife who did not appreciate Brian Lucas’ joke about the cards. We try and exclude jokes that may offend members but sometimes we get it wrong! Apologies!

We have also had a complaint that some of the photos are too light. The newsletter is printed on our new coloured laser printer and sometimes the colour reproduction is not ideal. If you want good colour please read the newsletter on the internet as in most cases the colour is perfect. We would once again appeal to members to please read the electronic version of our newsletter so that we do not have to print so many hard copies.

A Head Butt on the Green Leads to Ban Lawn bowls has the image of being one of the most sedate games, but the sport is not immune from on-green violence. Ulverstone Bowls Club player Wayne Polden was found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute by head butting Penguin’s Ricky Richardson.

The North West Tasmania Bowls Association suspended Mr. Polden for two weeks, while Mr. Richardson was reprimanded for abusing an umpire, after allegedly calling him a “cheat”. NWTBA president David Langmaid said the incident last Saturday was the first case of head butting he had come across in 20 years in the sport.

“The association is very disappointed in the actions of both players. We don’t want to see this sort of situation arise again,” Mr. Langmaid told the Burnie Advocate.

Sorrento versus the Police 2011 In what is now to become an annual event, Sorrento were able to beat a Police team 93-74 Chris Tibbits, Ray Stapledon, Warren Elliott and Ken Giles did well and won bottles of wine. Everyone who participated agreed it was a great evening and looking forward to next year’s competition.

Arse Beats Class “Arse beats class” is a comment not infrequently heard on the bowling green. How’s this for an example: At the time of the second last Thursday Pennant round Sorrento’s Third Division Gold 2, then second last on the Pennant table, was playing Quinns Rocks, then top of the table, at Quinns Rocks. A hard task!

Towards the end of the day, two of Sorrento’s three teams had finished, one with a good win and one with a loss. At the time the skippers crossed to the head for the last end the last team, skippered by Neil McLaughlan, was eight down on the score board, three down at the head and the teams were four short of the aggregate. With just two bowls to deliver in competition with the opposition Skipper, turning any of this negative position around would appear to be hopeless.

Drawing shot would not improve the situation and as Sorrento had a number of back bowls a run at the jack was the way to go. It worked, and with the first bowl Sorrento went from three down to three up. Useful, but this still left the team two shots away from helping with an aggregate win.

At this time Quinns Rocks had one bowl close to the ditch which held a further two Sorrento bowls out of the head. If Sorrento’s last bowl of the day could put that in the ditch and stay on the green Sorrento would pick up a further three shots. Incredibly it worked, resulting in a nine shot turn around with the last two Sorrento bowls.

From three down to six up, this helped provide an aggregate win by one shot. As a consequence of this “arse beats class” event Quinns Rocks lost their top position on the pennant table. Their view could be expressed in the recent memorable words of Australia’s hopeful “Leader in Waiting”, “S- -t happens”.

Skill, or Just Plain Luck It is amazing the ability and skill some of our members possess, or think they possess.

Prior to Christmas, during the first round of Thursday Pennants we played at Midland Morrison. We had a good day on the carpet and after socialising with the MM boys we headed for home. There was considerable debate on the best way to Sorrento given that it was a work day and the extra traffic it caused compared to a Saturday.

The majority ruled taking us home via the Reid Highway.

We started by going via Lloyd onto the Great Northern Highway then left onto the Reid all the way to Erindale road, right turn along Erindale to Beach Rd and back to the Club.

This route took us through fourteen traffic light controlled intersections, one of these being a free left turn on the Great Northern. However, there was an unplanned right turn into Erindale Rd because there was a red light which was not stopping us as we took the green arrow, one way around a red light.

Apart from a couple of slow approaches to intersections we did not stop once from Midland Morrison to Sorrento. Does anyone else have this gifted ability, our driver seemed to think he was the only one?

Reply to Frank Lilley’s Comments on Volunteers Maybe Frank Lilley has raised an issue of importance when calling for more volunteers in last month’s news letter. This important issue begs further consideration, because the evidence at many clubs, as Frank rightly points out, is that tasks, once run by volunteers, are fast becoming paid jobs with the inevitable increase in the cost to operate.

Because the health of a club can be measured not only by the balance sheet, but also by the level of volunteer activity, a call for volunteers alone is perhaps only one ingredient in what is a very competitive environment for people’s time.

Perhaps the way we continue to look for and treat our volunteers is negatively impacting on our success with recruiting volunteers, perhaps there is a better way because we know that there are successful volunteer programs run by many not-forprofit organisations and clubs.

Those successful programs have, as a minimum, the following ‘core’ aspects in place.

1. A skill base audit of the members of the organisation.

2. A volunteer program consisting of : • A volunteer program coordinator.

• An active volunteer recruitment process.

• An active volunteer communication system.

• An active volunteer recognition program The coordinators task is to oversee the volunteer program to ensure it provides for: • Recruitment of volunteers, both internal & external to the organisation.

• Development and maintenance of the volunteer register.

• Establishing volunteer communications via multi channel methods (verbal, written and electronic).

• Receiving the organisations ‘duty requirements’ to be handled by volunteers.

• Communicate ‘Duty’ requirement schedule to volunteers.

• Roster or allocate volunteers to such duties.

• Receiving the organisations 12 month ‘work and project’ capital works program for both ‘committed’ and ‘subject to funding’ projects.

• Communicate ‘work & project’ requirement schedule to volunteers.

• Allocate volunteers to the ‘work & project’ work schedule In trying to explore the issue that Frank’s article evokes, it seems there are factors that are confusing when we talk about volunteering.

On the one hand, our society wouldn’t survive in so many areas of our daily life that we just take for granted – hospitals, health care facilities, aged care, homeless, deaf, blind and other disabled and so many other areas, if it wasn’t for the army of volunteers that make up the back bone of support because Govt. funding just can not provide. Have a natural disaster and volunteers come out of the wood work to offer a hand, and well appreciated they are too.

But on the other hand, sporting clubs are experiencing a drought when it comes to volunteers where the willing few do all the work. Why is that so?

It’s interesting to look back for a moment at the good old days, from which many sporting club volunteer methods and ideas have evolved. For instance – belonging to a club was for many, the centre of their social life and their volunteer involvement 23

was simply an extension of that social involvement. It has provided for lifelong friendships and life long held beliefs that volunteering is part of being a club member and it should still be the case today – But it’s not!!!

Too many other things to do – the pace of life has quickened and individual wealth is affording the more adventurous to explore the planet, social life is now a mix of many things including TV, restaurants and shows, grand kids school sports and concerts to attend and the odd game of bowls. No longer is the club the centre of the social scene, it is merely just one of the outlets of the social scene, so volunteering to the club by ones own initiative is not high on the agenda. Besides the club are now highly geared to making money to cover cost and I pay my fees, so why do I need to volunteer anyway – see it’s all changed!

Now let’s come back to the present and explore the real world. People do like to be involved and recognised, people do have time available and many do charity work just to be occupied.

Could, with a well planned program, there be an opportunity for a club so diverse in activities as our club, to tap into that sea of people who may or may not be members, but would love to participate?

From this perspective, it appears that Frank Lilley’s call for volunteers to attend a myriad of things necessary for the successful running of our club, without the cost impost does challenge us all. This response to that article is an attempt to raise the bar to meet that challenge.

Umpire’s Corner Congratulations to Sharon Eggers and Eleanor Adams who passed their umpire’s written and ‘on green’ exams to become accredited level 1 national umpires. With a busy schedule of events each year needing umpires I would encourage anyone interested, particularly the ladies, to take up this rewarding activity which is an integral part of the game of bowls.

With the main competitive season finished and moving into the more relaxed winter season, players should not become lax with the laws of the game as it may become a habit they will carry into formal competitions. In particular laws relating to ‘possession of the rink (mat)’, encroaching on neighbouring rinks, improper delivery of the jack, position of players and player’s duties need to be adhered to so that everyone can enjoy the game. If you are not sure of these requirements get hold of a law book and check them out.

situations or misunderstandings relating to the “Laws of the Sport of Bowls” which players have encountered. Your feedback will be included in up coming newsletters and would be of interest and benefit to fellow bowlers.

We have reduced the price to $10 per copy if purchased from behind the bar. We have been selling books for more than six years now so will be pleased when all the books are sold and we can make the final donation to Alzheimer’s.

Musical Tribute Night A musical “Tribute Night” took place at the club on the night of March 26th. The show was a sell-out and everyone who had bought tickets was eagerly looking forward to seeing the acts advertised.

There were some initial grumbles over seating but this soon dissipated once the performance began. The first entertainer was a Cliff Richards impersonator who not only sounded like Cliff but who also looked a lot like him. He performed a whole raft of famous Cliff Richards’ songs, which after about two numbers, encouraged lots of people onto the dance floor.

The second artist was a Tina Turner look-alike with a powerful voice, who did immense justice to the songs she had chosen to perform. Again the dance floor was filled and in fact space while dancing was at a premium – some people chose to dance outside the centre door of the club rooms.

The third act was a duo of attractive ladies who were dressed as the female part of Abba. They also delighted the crowd with fantastic renditions of some of Abba’s favourite hits. The dance floor was again bulging at the seams. People brought their own nibbles to satisfy the hunger resulting from vigorous ‘gyrating’ on the dance floor and everyone was hugely impressed by the professionalism and skill of the three sets of performers.

No one wanted the night to end and all who attended wanted to know when the next such event would take place at the club. Thanks must go to Greg Day for conceiving and organising this terrific show. He had a band of willing and cooperative helpers, without whom the show would not have happened so flawlessly. A great night!!

Approximately ninety-four members attended and enjoyed the fellowship, a dinner and dancing after the presentations.

Besides the trophies for the winners, trophies were also awarded to the ladies and men’s bowler of the year. Kath Harris won the ladies award while Bruce Eagles won the men’s.

As a matter of interest the Men’s Bowler of the Year was determined on the following basis2 points for participating 5 points for each win in the Major competition including the grand final 3 points for each win in the Plate competition including the grand final 2 points on elimination in a Major semi-final 3 points for runner-up in a Major grand final 1 point for runner-up in a Plate grand final No points are awarded for any alignment rounds No points are awarded for Plate games played during the first round of a Major competition as they are considered an alignment round in respect of the Plate competition.

The Ladies’ Bowler of the Year was determined by an abridged version of the above The basis above has been used by the Men’s Match Committee for the last two years.

Interestingly enough if the bowler of the year had been determined on the basis used prior to that the winner would have been the same.

Both Match Committees are reviewing the above to determine whether any improvements could be made for the 2011-2012 season. Members will be advised if there are any changes.

9. 57 ½ Monique Kopec 10. 57 Barry Jones Congratulations to Tony. Tony missed one week, and so did Ray Dunn, but on the week Tony missed, Ray lost. And on the week Ray missed, Tony won. Who needs who more, guys? Tony’s record was 10 bonus wins (by more than 10 shots), 10 other wins, and one loss. Very impressive numbers.

Some facts and figures The competition ran for 21 weeks. 136 different bowlers participated. An average of 46 players participated each week, with 60 players the largest and 40 players the smallest number we had. 286 matches involving 1,144 bowlers were organised during the year. We contributed $8,008 in total of which $2,288 was distributed in prize money and “lucky fivers”, and $5,720 went to the club in green fees.

Five players played all 21 weeks – Euie Tennant, Lindsay Baker, Brian Joy, Stuart Wright and Tom Harding. You will notice most of these names in the top finishers, which demonstrates how important it is to play every week you can if you want to win the season prizes. Helen Harvey and Linda Turner learnt a lot this year, with 1 win and 13 losses to learn from.

Thanks to all who played. Particular thanks go to Richard Fermoyle and Ken Giles for collecting the names and for managing the stress when the numbers weren’t even or players failed to turn up and for writing up the cards. And most weeks the money even balanced! Watch out for the new season of Twilight Bowls starting again on the 8th November, 2011.

Ladies Saturday Pennants Final The Sorrento lady bowlers who played Saturday Pennants in Division 1 Blue finished the season top of the ladder in their division. This gives them automatic promotion, along with second-placed Manning, into Division 1 Red, which is the highest of all divisions, for next season. It also qualified the two teams making up the side to take part in the play off games for the Division 1 Blue pennant.

The play offs for all of the ladies Saturday Pennants Divisions were held at the Gosnells Bowling Club on their synthetic grass greens – a bit of a trip for a northern suburbs side. In the morning, Sorrento, who finished 1st, was to play against North Beach who finished 4th and Manning who finished 2nd was to play Leeming who finished 3rd. The winners of each game would then play for the pennant in the afternoon. The Sorrento side had beaten North Beach 4 points to 0 on each of the two times the clubs had met during the pennants season. So everyone felt there was a 34

strong chance of success yet again against our close rivals.

Whether it was a case of nerves, luck on the day or some other factor(s), North Beach prevailed over the Sorrento girls on both rinks. Credit must go to the North Beach ladies for the consistent and determined way they tackled the game. On the day, Sorrento was outclassed by their opponents.

Manning narrowly defeated Leeming in their morning game and then was very slimly beaten by North Beach in a thrilling finish for the pennant in the afternoon.

The Sorrento ladies were disappointed not to have performed better towards winning the Division 1 Blue pennant, but were thrilled to have played so consistently well throughout the season to earn their promotion to Division 1 Red. The players throughout the season were Moira Dean, Anne Lilley, Marie Smart, Wendy Saul, Coral Smith, Judy Campbell, Pauline Bourne, Jan Cook, Sharon Eggers and Myrtle Raven. Well done, girls - you did the club very proud!!! – Sharon Eggers

Junior Development Programme Following an approach through the Club Executive as a result of a BowlsWA survey conducted last year Tony Bourne began the process of investigating interest in the club for a junior bowls programme. He co-opted Chris Tibbits and Sharon Eggers and those three now form a steering committee looking at all possibilities. They have discussed with BowlsWA their interest and the newly appointed Junior Development Officer, Rene Farrell, has joined us and will oversee a junior development programme for BowlsWA overall. This is a great beginning point for what we see as an important initiative for bowls in our general area and more importantly for the growth of bowls in our club.

The Club Executive agreed, in February 2011, to support the programme and has money set aside to provide equipment in the form of junior bowls. We are aware that funds for this venture can also be accessed via the Australian Sports Commission through their After School Communities Programme.

An initial approach to other local clubs was promising with representatives from 6 others clubs indicating an interest. One of our goals is to commence an inter school competition following coaching sessions at those schools interested. The first school to trial our pilot coaching sessions was Hawker Park Primary using students from Year 6, aged 11 years. It was an interesting start and one we feel can be built on in a very positive way. Belridge High School has also asked to attend our club as part of their sports programme for second term.

Any member who is interested in assisting with this venture is asked to contact one of our steering committee. Your support will be warmly welcomed and it will go a long way to showing the community at large that bowls is a game for all ages not just the mature in age.

Alan Anderson wins Brownlow On Sunday 17 April 2011, the count for the Brownlow for the best player in the men’s Saturday 1st Division Blue was conducted at the Sorrento Bowling Club. Players were able to score up to 7 points from each of their colleagues in the team (maximum of 21 points per game) and could include in their overall total, a maximum of 16 games. Many thanks go to John Godfrey and his wife Robyn for maintaining the votes throughout the year.

After the enthralling count, Alan Anderson was declared the winner and presented with the trophy by Club Captain Tiger Hogan. Alan was a worthy winner having had a great year playing as a third in the rink skippered by John Brown. Alan was a significant contributor to his rink finishing the season as the best performing rink in the Sorrento 1 Blue Division – 12 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses.

The top 6 players in the Brownlow for the 2010/2011 season were Alan Anderson, Richard Bone, John Brown, Ron Kuziela, Jim Welch and Ian Linford. This year prior to the count, a “friendly” game of bowls was held. The format was a round robin consisting of 3 games of 7 ends with each rink playing with members that closely reflected the teams played during the year. The stakes were high prize money but more importantly, bragging rights as the best rink. Despite all the claims beforehand, as they say, the proof was in the pudding with the best performing rink throughout the season coming out on top by winning their 3 games in a comprehensive manner. The winning rink was John Brown, Alan Anderson, Richard Bone and Bruce Eagles All the games were played in great spirit with considerable banter and reputations questioned. After a team photo of the group that got the Division promoted to 1 White for next season, the players and partners were treated to a feast fit for kings and queens. It was really pleasing to see the number of partners that came to also enjoy the day.

Allan Partington and his son Ryan showed their considerable cooking prowess by preparing some tasty and tender pork on the spit with roast potatoes and pumpkin.

Gaie Bone and Judy Brown completed the delights with salads, buns, fruit, cheeses and biscuits. A great day was had by all and it finished off a very rewarding year for both the players and the Club.

Silver Chain Charity Day Silver Chain, a not-for-profit organisation, is one of the largest providers of community clinical and health care services in Australia, assisting over 40,000 people each year. They offer a diverse range of services, including home care, palliative care, emergency care, family health care and other services. They have provided very necessary care to a number of Sorrento bowlers over many years and some of our existing members are currently receiving very welcome assistance.

Our Club has held a fund raising day to support the Silver Chain each year for the past seventeen years. It is called the “Wally Smith Silver Chain Charity Day” in memory of an earlier club member who had received health care before suggesting the inclusion of this annual event in the Clubs annual programme.

The eighteenth annual event was held in March and following a great afternoon bowling, club members and guests took part in a raffle of over sixty prizes which had been donated by club members and corporate sponsors. Funds raised from the raffle, together with a percentage of the day’s green fees donated by the Sorrento Bowling Club, and including all money normally set aside for the day’s bowling prizes, was again donated to the Silver Chain Association. This year the event raised a total of $957.

We wish to thank Sylvia McLaughlan and other volunteers who assisted with the days events. Sylvia spent a great deal of time over the weeks preceding the event personally contacting some thirty local business houses seeking sponsors for this event and obtained twenty three prizes to be raffled. While it is not possible to name all of the other volunteers who either personally donated prizes or helped obtain sponsors or helped to run the days events we do need to recognize some members who made a significant contribution to the success of the day. Chris Tibbits, Pat and Austin Duffey, Monique Kopek, Wendy and John Stobie and Bea Meakins all rate special thanks, as does Dennis Saunders who has never failed to donate a large bottle of whisky, which is usually the first prize to be whisked off, by a lucky raffle winner.

Bowling winners on the day were Norm Claffey, Peter Davies, Margaret Watson and Wendy Stobie. Each won a bottle of wine donated by Pat and Austin Duffey and will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy.
