From The President’s Pen
(As tabled at the Annual General Meeting 7th June 2009)
T
hank you to all that have attended this meeting. It has been a very pleasing year for the Sorrento Bowling Club, including the croquet section. You will recall that a very successful Open Day was held in the latter part of the 2007/8 season which proved to be a great catalyst for the 2008/9 season. Not only did our membership increase, our financial standing also improved dramatically. From that day our membership rose to the current membership as at 02/06/09 of 662 members of which 452 have already signed on for this season. Of those who joined on that Open Day we expect to lose some for various reasons. We thank them for their support over the season. The membership deal for those joining and haven’t played before has been extended for another season. I can’t see why it cannot become a permanent deal. The capitation fees from those who have already paid for the coming season is, $13,395. I will not go into the financial aspects of the Club, only to say that from good management of our finances we are in the best position we have been in since I have been at the Club. Our treasurer will give a very detailed explanation of our position in his report. Our greens are in the best condition they have been in for several seasons. A lot of time and money has been spent on upgrading our ageing equipment and on greens management. A quick look at the financial statement will show an expenditure of more than $60,000. The greens had the most usage they have probably had in the past 10 years. With having to cater for Scarborough and North Beach and the Police Carnival and our own extensive programme they are a credit to the greens staff. The surrounds are in excellent condition thanks to the volunteers who attend them on a weekly basis. With the assistance of the City of Joondalup we now have a new roof and ceiling. At the time of writing this we are still awaiting on a decision as to whether to put in reverse-cycle air-conditioning or put back the old and inefficient evaporative system. We have gone to the City with several proposals in favour of installing a reverse cycle system. The tables that are in the Club now have been donated to us by the City and with our new chairs the Club makes a more pleasing impression. The new carpet and tiling to
the front of the bar and a planned repaint of the interior will give a better atmosphere. I think an interior decorator should be engaged to assist in deciding what colour to paint the interior. I thank Ian Wittber and Brian Lucas for the time spent in consultation with the City over the roofing and air-conditioning and other related matters. I can assure you that it was not an easy task dealing with an organization which has so many tiers of management. I also thank the City of Joondalup for their commitment to the Club. Since being at the Club I have wondered why we don’t have a combined wind-up and presentation dinner or lunch. We could bring in an outside caterer and music and have a really enjoyable event. Doing it this way means no Club member has to worry about what catering to prepare and all the cleaning up. The two relevant committees and the social committee should get together to organize a function for this season. For the incoming committee members they should be aware that all positions are for two years. They can resign after one year however for continuity purposes it is better if they do two years. Maybe we should have introduced a system where half are elected for two years and the others for one year for the initial year. In that way you have members who can assist the incoming members. The Police Carnival was an outstanding success. Whilst it did not generate the amount of revenue that we were told it would it certainly boosted the coffers. More importantly the accolades we received from the visiting states certainly boosted the reputation of our club. Our secretary up until recently was still receiving messages of praise and thanks for the hospitality and friendship shown by our members. To run an event as large as the carnival took an enormous amount of time and resources. From markers on the green to the dishwashers, the way it was handled was a credit to all. I thank all that were involved in any way at all. Congratulations to the winners of the championship events and well done to all who participated. With the amount of time being put in by the secretary and the bar manager we should look at employing an office person to take a lot of the load off their shoulders. This person would handle general correspondence and be able to receive moneys and stock and answer general enquiries. Another option is to employ a secretary manager. They don’t come cheap but as the workload increases the volunteers are spending more time at the Club. They too have families and have a life. I will now thank those outgoing executive and committee members for the service and time they have given to the Club. A Club is only as good as its volunteers. You have performed your duties admirably and I thank you for that. To the incoming
members I sincerely hope the coming season can be as successful as the last and we look forward to your contributions. To those who elected to stay on I thank you personally for the assistance and patience you have given me and look forward to another rewarding season. To those who for various reasons have decided to leave us, from the executive we wish you all the best whether at another Club or deciding to pursue other options To those who have joined from other Clubs we welcome you to our ranks and to those who are joining as new bowlers/croquet/dart players we hope you enjoy the experience at our Club. Our Treasurer’s Report
(As tabled at the Annual General Meeting 7th June 2009)
I
had great pleasure to present the Club’s financial statements for the 2008/9 financial year to the Annual General Meeting.
Net income (profit) for the 2008/9 financial year was $106,469 compared with $17,842 in the previous financial year. Compared with the previous 2007/8 financial year, the Club’s Net bar income increased by $38,440. Bowls income increased by $33,532, while costs were contained – providing an improved result for our bowls operation of almost $34,000. Kitchen and Social showed an increase of $8,641. On the expenditure side, costs were well contained, despite increased expenditure on house and grounds (such as floor sanding, flag poles, barbecues and expenditure associated with Australian Police Bowls Carnival). After the Club’s considerable investment on the procurement of equipment for the bar and the purchase of stools, chairs and tables for the clubhouse, the Club has been able to
maintain healthy cash reserves (up by over $60,000 over last year). Members will recall that approval was given in 2008 for the Club to borrow $55,000 to fund furniture, greens and bar equipment. Our efforts over the past eighteen months have enabled the Club to make these purchases from within our cash flows. – Brian Lucas
From the Secretaries Desk
I
report that the club has undergone some major alterations and changes in the last couple of months, none more so than the replacement of the roof and ceiling within the clubhouse. As result of this work, and representation to the City of Joondalup, it would also seem likely that we will have reverse cycle air conditioning installed within the club within the next couple of months. The executive, on your behalf, have agreed to contribute an amount of up to $12,500 towards the cost of this project, and as it stand now, we are waiting on the final decision which is being made by the CEO Garry Hunt. If we had not gone down this path, the alternative was that they would reinstall the inefficient evaporative system, along with floor mounted gas heating, which meant that some floor space would also be taken up in what is already a crowded space. We have been advised verbally by outside parties, that the cost of the gas heating alone would be in the vicinity of $20,000, however that has not been confirmed, but serves to give you an idea of the overall costs of what has been mooted. We feel that if we can obtain the air conditioning, we will be better able to serve all our members, both in summer and winter, and have a far more proficient system. We will further advise when we have a final decision. Membership fees have been coming in fairly well, with a good percentage paying prior to the cessation of the discount. There are still a few to pay, with quite a few of the “new” bowlers included. This was to be expected, under this “try before you buy” arrangement. However we are still getting new applications all the time and

numbers are continuing to grow. Once we have finalised those that are not rejoining, we can then make a decision as to any new promotions for new members. Currently we have over 200 men bowlers, 120 lady bowlers, 36 croquet and almost 100 social bowlers who have paid their fees, and more coming in each day. There are always those that are slow to pay, and a few that are away on leave somewhere, and who we expect will pay on their return. At the end of the day, we expect numbers to be fairly close to what we held last year, and if we can achieve that result, we can be very satisfied with what we have achieved. The Annual General Meeting has come and gone, and seemingly all members are fairly happy with what was achieved last year. We did very well financially, and this has enabled us to make a contribution towards the air conditioning system, as well as allowing us to cover from cash flow all the works that have been carried out by ourselves, namely the bar stools and tables, as well as the new chairs in the hall area. With the carpet and tiling the overall clubhouse has been completely transformed. I will be going on my annual pilgrimage to Exmouth early in July, and will return towards the end of August. The work in the office will be continued, using the services of Rachel to some extent, along with Glenn Boston doing his usual stint, and Ian Marshall will be keeping an eye on the correspondence. Ron Taylor has also agreed to complete the minutes for the two meetings of the executive that will be held in my absence. I thank these people for their assistance, and know that I will return to a smooth running operation. Both match committees are currently working towards completing the bowling calendar, and there are a number of challenges on just when and where some of the events will fit in, as Bowls WA have a fairly heavy load with planned events. Some of you may also have noticed the 10
“structure” that was erected on “B” green last month, but unfortunately the green was damaged when trying to remove, and that green has undergone a full renovation, at a time of the year that is not really good timing, but we have been assured that all will be in readiness for the new season. Pennant players should also note that there is at least one weekend when a double header is planned, in order that season can be completed prior to Easter, which is very early in April in 2010. In addition, any players that has yet to submit their pennant playing form, should do so as soon as possible, as selectors need to know that we have sufficient players to at least field the teams that we had last year. New Category of Membership for Seniors
I
t has been proposed that some of our longer serving and more senior members of the club, be granted some reprieve in the costs of being a member of the Club.
Whilst the Executive appreciate that a lot of our members are in the senior age bracket, to extend any reduction in fees to all members who may achieve such status, and given that the majority would take up such discount, it would mean that our income from fees would be reduced. As most senior members would still play bowls on a regular basis, and the costs associated with preparing greens are the same whether they are being prepared for social bowls or pennants, it must be understood that any concessions given are in consideration of the members long term membership, as well as their age. As a result of discussions, it is proposed that the following clause be inserted into our membership category within the constitution, with matter to be discussed between now and the Half Yearly General meeting which is to be held in January 2010, and that at that meeting, a notice of motion be presented to include in the constitution as from the beginning of the following club year. That is, that this fee would apply to those that qualify, for the club year beginning on 1st May 2010 on an ongoing basis. On current fees, this would mean a reduction 11
of nearly $53 to an overall fee per year of $192 for a bowler and $224 for a croquet player. Proposed clause for insertion in the constitution is as follows:Any person, who from age, sickness or infirmity, wish to retire from full membership of the Club but desire to retain their association with the Club, can be granted membership under this category subject to the following criteria. 1. That they have attained the age of 75 years. 2. That they have been members of the Club for a continuous period of at least ten years. 3. In all other respects a Senior Member shall be afforded all privileges enjoyed by Ordinary Members and shall be elected in the prescribed manner as for full members. 4. Membership fees to be set at 75% of ordinary membership fees, plus capitation and any other levies or charges that would apply. As such, a Senior Member would be allowed to play pennants and championship events, as well as being eligible to be elected onto any committee within the club. As a result, such member would be capitated with their appropriate controlling body. – Ian Wittber
Greens Report from Jem Shorland
D
ear reader, Thank you for not giving me a terribly hard time while I attempted to look after your best bowling interests as Greens Director over the past twelve months. I know you will agree we have played on excellent greens after a slow start caused by insufficient sunshine at the start of the season. There is no need to thank me. Your thanks should be directed to the Greens staff and to Tony Pilgrim who made all the major and correct decisions. I thank the numerous members who answered the call for working bees and a wonderful set of members who labour on your behalf as members of the Sorrento Bowling Club committee. Special thanks to Ian Wittber and to Brian Lucas for their immediate and wholehearted response to assist me with the minor problems which were proving too difficult for me to attend to. I have tried to be a contributing member of quite a number of bowling, hockey, Rotary and other clubs and have never seen men as able and outstanding as these two in their control over these two onerous positions. I say bravo to them both! Bev and I have leased our home out for twelve months, so we are not in a position to return to normal Perth bowling suburbia until at least then. If we enjoy the life, we may extend it for another 12 months. 12
So until we return I ask you to always be prepared to put your hand up to assist in progressing our great Club. The rewards you get are great self satisfaction and the close company and companionship of a wonderful group of fellow members. –Jem Shorland
Message from the new Greens Committee
T
his will be a very brief report as I was only appointed chairman of greens and grounds five days prior to writing. However I will start on a positive note.
I attended my first meeting of the Executive and was pleased to find that Glenn Craig (our green keeper), had submitted his report. Glenn is very positive that we will have four very good greens for the start of the pennant season, with “B” green not far behind in terms of green speed. He is anticipating (weather permitting) that the Ladies will start off with 15 second greens for their pennant home games on a Tuesday, while the Men can expect 15.5 sec for Thursdays and 16 sec for Saturdays. Great, if he achieves that I don’t expect too many complaints. On the matter of complaints regarding greens or grounds, if you have one (or more), then talk to the Green’s Committee about it, and we will see what can be done. No problem was ever resolved by wandering around complaining, without channelling it in the right direction. The same goes for constructive suggestions, let’s hear them. I don’t play a lot of winter bowls, but I did have a roll up recently, and was amazed at how well “E” green was running, generally regarded as our poorest green among members. Darts Report
T
he 2009 Season is well under way with the Club’s four dart teams performing very well.
In the West Coast Darts Association our Premier Division is sitting second on the ladder, equal on points with the top side but with a slightly lower percentage. Our Second Division sits on top of the ladder, six points clear of the second side. They won ten out of its eleven games at its last outing. If you wish to know the name of the player who lost his singles – well you will have to look that up on the “web”. Our Sport and Bowling Clubs Darts Association sides are performing exceptionally well with the Third Division on top, six points clear, and our Fourth Division side also on top, two points clear. At this stage of the season we expect all four sides to be competing in the finals – well done players. –Brian Lucas

Friday Afternoon Social Bowls Report
T
he afternoons continue to be well patronised and winners are mixed between long time bowlers and newer bowlers. There has not been any one stand out winner in the past two months. The numbers average over the 50 mark as the weather has been very good for the game. The rain (what rain??) has not dampened the spirits of the keen bowler and we have only had one day cancelled due to the weather. The most significant event since our last report was the Police Championship Legacy Day. On that day we had 224 players with all greens in use and only one rink short of a full house. It was a magnificent day and preceded the Police Championships in the best way possible. I take this opportunity to thank all those who helped me in filling the duties over the week; your generous support was most appreciated and helped the event run as smoothly as it did. Social Friday bowls will continue through winter and spring, weather permitting and I look forward to seeing you there. At this point I must thank my main helpers Barbara and Barbara, you do a fantastic job and I really appreciate your support. What did the Atlantic Ocean say to the Pacific Ocean? Tribute to George Griffiths 1935-2009 “Lest we forget”
I
t was a terrible shock to hear about the death, on Wednesday 10th June 2009, of our friend and mate George. George, who was born in England in 1935 had a rich and interesting life which revolved around his deep love of the sea (eight years in the Merchant Navy), his love of travel, lawn bowls, pottering in the garden, his computer and most of all his wife Betty, his true love! He liked the lighter side of life and in retirement enjoyed sending funny stories, from the Internet, to all his friends around the world. In 1973 he immigrated to Perth and worked for Inghams for many years. He started bowls at Warwick and moved to Sorrento a few years ago. This “true sea-faring man” was admired and respected and will be sadly missed. Forever in our hearts, now at peace

51st Annual Police Bowling Championships
T
ake a very large bow Sorrento and many many thanks for your efforts over the week of April 17 to 24 for the duration of the Police Bowling Championships. ALL of the competing bowlers from here and interstate were unanimous in their praise and compliments for the way the week’s competition ran so smoothly and seamlessly. Glen Craig, Tony Pilgrim and all greens staff for providing the five great greens for the week (visitors most impressed with how the greens ran all week). Joan Whitham and her girls, what can you say? Magnificent catering all week from dawn to dusk which was above and beyond the standard which would have sufficed. Glenn Boston and the thirst quenchers behind the bar who kept all and sundry well lubricated all week, thank you. Well done Rachel, you followed instructions perfectly in regard to the Eastern Staters! Chris Tibbits, what a great organiser. Chris worked all day every day with the Tournament Organisers, Tony Horner & Jill Revell, and oiled the wheels of the Carnival to the point of perfection. Thank you very much Chris for putting together and controlling the Sorrento volunteers’ roster and for keeping the social bowls going every day. Special mention must go to your organisational skills which allowed Charity Day to be a huge success. Our Club Captain, Tiger Hogan cannot avoid a mention along with the Umpires, Markers, Runners and Scoreboard Attendants who all put in their time and did their part in ensuring the success achieved during the week. Thank you. And what about all the members who turned out for the Police Legacy Charity Game, all 70 of you – tremendous – you all helped in making it the biggest Police Charity Day any where in the Country, five greens full of 240 bowlers. Thank you all for entering and allowing us to present $1530 to Police Legacy on your behalf. The Championships were hotly contested from Day 1 right through to Day 7 when the Finals were played. The WA team acquitted itself very well and achieved success in the blue ribbon event, the Sides Championship, which is a round robin event with every State team fielding 5 rinks of fours against all the other States. WA sealed victory for only the second time ever, in the final round against Victoria. WA’s 27
first success came in 1994 and fifteen years is a long time between drinks. Worth a mention here is that two Sorrento bowlers were part of the successful WA team, Ric Hutchinson & Tony Horner. (It could be that the daily presence of our adopted mascot, the well dressed and beautiful Lilly, along with Dennis Saunders was instrumental in WA’s success!!) The home side also won success in the Triples Championship where a WA team skipped by a bowler in his first appearance at a Carnival, Ian Cornthwaite, Alan Booth & Rob Bellis beat another WA team skipped by Tony Cocodis with Bernie Hett & Darrell Walsh. In the Singles Championship Dean Smith of NSW got up over his team mate and last years winner George Stewart. Two WA bowlers played off in the Final of the Singles Plate with Phil Dobie victorious over Bob Bandy. The Pairs Championship was won by Jim Rook & Terry Hodge of NSW over Rob Lawrence & Darren Rowlinson of WA. Des Foley & Danny Dunlop WA took out the Pairs Plate with a big win over John McKnight & Tim Dodds of SA. In the Fours final played on the Thursday afternoon, a team from SA skipped by John McKnight won over the NSW four skipped by Dean Smith. The Fours Plate was won by Farris Derrij skipping his VIC side against a NSW four led by Neil Dell. A WA four skipped by Bob Bandy made it to the semi final before bowing out. Sorrento’s Wayne Olive was a member of the WA team which won the Police Associates Sides Championship with QLD finishing second. The Consistency Trophy was won by NSW from WA. – Tony Horner
Hot Hints from Heardie Part 8
T
his is about the basic principles of bowls and whether we should change our present style of delivery? The answer is a definite NO!
What each one of us should do is retain our own style, and build into the basic principles, which are • Rhythm: a smooth flowing delivery which will bring consistency into your game. • Balance: steady as your go, essential in very windy conditions. • Timing: make sure you have enough time to go through the full process of delivery. 28
If the length of your swing is too short you’ll find yourself “jabbing” the bowl at the last second. • Follow through: stretch out your delivery arm as if you are attempting to shake hands with your aiming mark. Your hand should not finish above knee height, and stay down until bowl has travelled about a third of the distance. Bowlers if you decide to make a change to your delivery do it now, and not in Pennant Season. Make up your mind and stick with it until you are happy that the change is working. Strive for a good fluent delivery. – Graeme Heard

ric Tompkins (Keith’s Dad) would like to thank all club members for the warm welcome he received on his return to Sorrento after many years of absence. Eric first joined Sorrento in 1983 and was a member for 13 years before moving out of the area. Eric says he is very happy to be back and see so many of the “old faces” There were only three complaints about the April Newsletter. One member was unhappy that his photograph made him look bald. Another was confused about the April Newsletter appearing in late March and a third complained that there were insufficient copies available. Apologies to those who did not get a copy of the April Newsletter but the plan was that at least half of our members would get an electronic version via their emails but unfortunately the club computer failed when asked to do this mass electonic mailing. Ian Wittber and Glenn Boston have re-assured your editor that this will not be a problem with the July edition. Members are requested to read the newsletter on their computers as this saves on the cost of printing coloured pages. • Did you know that the Sorrento Bowling Club has its own web-page? Unfortunately, even though he played well he lost! • Did you hear about Brian Joy’s “purple patch”? You editor does not have all the details and Brian refuses to supply these! Ask him yourself. • Did you hear that we had a Claffey, a Cleary and a Coffey on the same rink? • Did you know our eyes are always the same size from birth but our nose and ears never stop growing. • Did you know an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that also) • Did you know the cruise liner, QE 2 moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns. • Did you know that the first testicle guard (aka as a “box”) was used in cricket in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. It took men 100 years to realize that the brain is also important!! It is always sad when long serving members leave our club. This month we bid farewell to Bill and Doreen Crier who have moved to Busselton after 16 years with Sorrento. Both Bill and Doreen served on various committees and were both club captains. We wish them well at their new club

We were also sorry when Malcolm and Elenor Sargant decided to move to the Innaloo Bowling Club mainly to be with close friends whom they have played with many times in the past. Pennants Finals Reports 2nd Division Red It was disappointing to miss a home final by one and a half points so the following has to head off early one morning to Stirling. Rogers/Crow/Horner and Pilgrim Bywaters/Hutchinson/Beazley and Odell Marshall/Heard/Abercrombie and Townsend Martin/Nasuti/Hogan and Sanders Despite Mickey Martin’s late arrival (he thought the play-off was in the afternoon) Sorrento got off to a good start. After 14 ends the aggregate was “all square”. With one end to play, a brilliant shot by Ian Marshall gave us a four shot lead on the aggregate. After another good shot by Ian we won by 3 shots. (79 to 76) In the final against a strong Osborne Park team were too good for us and we ended up losing by 12 shots. – Neville Odell 3rd Division Red We arrived at the Cambridge Bowling Club on a beautiful autumn -morning eagerly looking forward to playing Wanneroo on the carpet, under ideal conditions, very little wind and with a green speed of 16. The Forkin, Farrell, Tompkins and Orton team had a very tight game. After the first five ends Sorrento was leading 7- 6. At the halfway mark Wanneroo just got their nose in front and it stayed that way until the 18th end when Sorrento scored a 5 to become very close again. Down by only one shot 21- 22. Sorrento then scored another 1 and then a 3, with Sorrento hiking the lead 25- 22„ Unlucky to lose the last end by one shot, but ended up with a good win 25-23. The Turner, Joy, Berecry and Stimpson team did not have a good start and were 4-nil down after three ends. Sorrento scored a 2 followed by a 3, then we were back, 5-4 up and it was game on, After 10 ends it was still very close with Sorrento 10-9 up, and 31
from then on our team played really well on the carpet and didn’t look back, ending up with another very good win 20-13. Grisbook, Newman, Trebilco and Lucas had a tough game after Sorrento won the first end. Wanneroo played steadily and was leading 11- 6 up at the halfway mark- From then on Sorrento were playing “catch-up” as Wanneroo consolidated their lead and on the 20th end scored a 6. Sorrento got one on the last end, ending the game as they had started, finally going down by I 1 shots. The Barber, Hill, Crier and Robson team had a good game and after six ends were up 10-4. Wanneroo came back hard and took the next 6 ends to lead 13-10. Wanneroo stayed in charge until near the end when Sorrento scored a 3, followed by a 2 to get close to a final score of 18-21. I am sure most of us enjoyed the match and, even though we lost the aggregate by only 5 shots, there were great bowls played an a fast carpet green. – Alan Turner 5th Division Red In 5 Red our team was as follows: G. Ebworth. B. Staples, N. Cleary and K. Coffey E. Conyngham, D. Rowland, J. Taylor and B. Bormolini G. Kirkham, W. Elliott, G. Schofield and D. Rea S. Wright, B. Jones, R. Mather and A. opposition in the last outing (2 weeks (before), confidence was high. At the half way mark the Sorrento teams were a good bet. However we will have to wait another year for that elusive win. That’s bowls! Thanks to Ron Burroughs for putting in all the effort needed to make up the teams after numerous late night phone calls. – Kevin Coffey 5th Division Blue It is pleasing to report about the wonderful season this Division produced. The teams were made up of experienced bowlers and new bowlers coming in for their first season of Pennants. We had the pleasure of introducing 11 new bowlers to the pennant competition and they all performed admirably. These players are as follows and remember the names as there will be some very good bowlers amongst them in future years. Barry Bradshaw, Greg Day, Pat Dichiera, Wayne Gray, Brian Gregory, Michael Ong Andre Pushong, Kevin Price, Don Rae, John Sturk, Phil Webb As a team they won ten of eighteen games and finished in 4th place on the premiership table which qualified them to play in the final play-offs, however, they were eliminated in the 1st Semi Final after a gallant effort. During the season there were some very good efforts with rinks having won the Pennant Pots on numerous occasions. The rink of Ron Taylor, Kevin Price, John Sturk, Greg Day have the great record of winning one of their games with a score of 50 to Nil, however, they had to experience the feeling of being on the other end of big wins in the finals, which is all a learning experience in bowls. – Des Bennett

Community Bowling Program.

he 2008/2009 program has now finished and it is pleasing to report on what was a highly successful season. This season we had complete fields of 24 teams on Tuesday night and 24 teams on Friday night under lights. We were blessed with very good conditions over the 12 weeks of the program and for the first time the players experienced good greens to bowl on and all players commented how much better it was to bowl on first class greens, this has created a great interest in our club with quite a few players becoming members. Two teams have been selected to represent the Sorrento Bowling Club in the Community Bowling Shield Carnival being held at the Hilton Park Bowling Club in April 2009. This program has been a great contributor to our financial fund raising over the years and it is pleasing to report this year we raised $15315 net towards Club funds also noting that this figure does not include any bar turnover. I would like to thank Geoff Glew for his great contribution in running the Friday Night Program and also the generous number of members who helped on both nights; we would not be as organized without these voluntary workers. –Des Bennett
Umpires Corner
E
ach issue we will try to include some commonly encountered (and obscure) regulations taken from the “Laws of The Sport of Bowls”. We welcome your feedback or comments on this section and will happily enter them in the next newsletter. What constitutes a Foot Fault? Rule 20 – Position on the Mat 20.1 Before delivery a player should be standing on the mat with one foot fully on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or a bowl, the player should have all or part of one foot on or above the mat. 20.3 Any player not meeting the terms of this law is committing a foot fault, and Law 21 will apply. Actions / consequences available. Rule 21 – Foot Faulting 21.1 If the umpire, either by their own observation or on appeal by one of the skips or 34
opponents in Singles, decides the player has not met the terms of Law 20, the umpire should on the first occasion, warn the player in the presence of the skip and advise the manager or the coach when they are present that a warning has been given. 21.2 On each occasion after this, the umpire should have the players bowl stopped and declared dead. 21.3 If it has not been possible to stop the bowl and it disturbs the head, the opponent should choose whether to:replace the head; leave the head as altered; or declare the end dead. 21.4 If a player has been given a warning and still fails to meet the terms of Law 20 while delivering the jack, Law 23.2 will apply.

J
ust a few lines to let you know that we are still alive. I seem to be spending more time going to funerals, I have lost quite a few friends since I got back. We have booked our tickets to fly back on the 20th of October with Singapore Airlines this time, we will be on one of the new bigger jets as far as Singapore and then change to a smaller one to get into Perth. 36
I have not been bowling for my club over here or in any competitions this year I may change to another club where I will feel a lot happier playing, there seems to be a lot of ill feeling at my old club being caused by new members that have joined over the past 2-3 years. Some people join and know what the club is all about and then want to change everything to their way of going on. Went to Torquay on the 13th of June to play in the weeks tournament didn’t have too bad a week got as far as the quarter finals in the pairs and trips and in the singles meet a England international in the first round and managed to beat him 21 -16 but I lost 2 rounds later to a under 25 international 21-19 The local newspaper made quite a bit of me winning the first round because the guy I beat had won it 3 out of the last 4 years it had been run. – Bryan & Rita Townsend

We wish to invite all members to an Open Meeting on 27th July at 9.30am – morning tea will be supplied. The meeting will be open for any members to offer suggestions generally, and to make a choice about provision of lunch on our Presentation Day at the end of year function. Some of our members are experiencing ill health at present. We wish them a speedy recovery, and look forward to their return to croquet in the near future. Many members are also globe trotting overseas at this time. We wish them safe journeys and look forward to hearing of their adventures when they return. A special thank you to those members who have assisted in maintaining our equipment recently, which has helped with the smooth running of our Club. We look forward to a great year ahead. Our plan is to continue growing with the prospect of continued enthusiasm and enjoyment for our members. The Rector will preach his farewell message after which the choir will sing: “Break Forth Into Joy.” At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What Is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM . The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. The Wedding Test
I
was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me...It was her beautiful younger sister. My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight miniskirts, and generally was bra-less. She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate because she never did it when she was near anyone else. One day her ‘little’ sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me that she couldn’t overcome. She told me that she wanted me just once before I got married and committed my life to her sister. Well, I was in total shock, and couldn’t say a word. She said, ‘I’m going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.’ I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. 40

I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car. Lo and behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping! With tears in his eyes, my father-inlaw hugged me and said, ‘We are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn’t ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family.’ And the moral of this story is: Always keep your condoms in your car
