Bowls Fixture Booklet 2019-2020

Welcome A warm welcome to all our members for the 2019/20 bowls season. The Club has had a very good 2018/19 season winning Clubs WA “Club of the Year” in the medium category for the third successive year. This has led to our Club being inducted into Club’s WA Hall of Fame. The also won Bowls WA “Metropolitan Club of the Year” for the second successive year. Results wise the Club’s Pennant teams achieved three promotions of which two of the teams also won their division’s Pennant. The Club is pleased to announce the appointment of John Goddard as the Club’s Bowls Development Co-Ordinator. John is highly knowledgeable and well respected within the West Australian Bowls Community. We seek all members support and participation for a range of new initiatives and strategies planned by John and our Club for the coming season. These are aimed at giving our bowlers the best opportunity to reach their full potential. This Fixtures Booklet once again combines Men’s and Women’s fixtures into a single publication, reflecting the Club’s proud reputation for inclusiveness. I would like to acknowledge our two Chairs of Match – Trevor Orton and Lee Leach who have put a lot of effort into this booklet. The Club looks forward to its members supporting the Championship, Sponsors and other Club events. This booklet should be considered as an important reference. Because events can change through adverse weather and other factors, members should also consult the Club’s website at www.sorrentobowlingclub.com.au. The website contains the very latest information on fixtures, team selections, upcoming events and much more. This booklet outlines all bowls events by months that are scheduled to be held during the season, together with condensed information on the scheduling for Club championships. Throughout this booklet you will also see reference to the Club’s valuable Sponsors. They support your Club and members are encouraged to give them your support in return by allowing them to have the chance to win your business. Selection Policy SELECTION COMMITTEES FOR 2019/2020 Men: Warren Elliot, Steve Draper, Murray Hulbert, Peter Snow and Alan Walton Women: Jan Cook, Coral Smith, Jan Siney, Shona Carter and Jan Paniperis GOAL We will aim to select the best combination of teams within each division on Club Pennant days to bring about on-green success for the Sorrento Bowling Club. POLICY Our aim is to select players on merit (in positions according to their ability and performance). Other factors that will be considered, will be a player`s:

• Team spirit and positive attitude towards the Club`s success • Commitment to regular training and practice • Willingness to play in any position and division • Commitment to playing the whole season. To achieve our goals the selection process will be fair and free from bias and discrimination. Selectors will adhere to the following guiding principles in decision-making:

• Selectors will seek feedback from Skippers, Coaches, Managers and Players • When major changes are made within divisions, the player/s involved will be

notified of the reasons • Players may request to meet the Selectors to discuss selection issues • Players have 48 hours to appeal the Selectors` decision. The appeal should be in writing and directed to the Chair of Selection who will act as mediator between the player and selectors, for negotiation of a speedy resolution. Should the matter remain unresolved, the player may request the Chair of Selection to take the appeal to the Men’s or Women’s Club Captain whose decision will be final • Individual player`s aspirations will be respected and considered, but in the context of what is best for the Club`s success • Support and promote practice regimes where training drills will be scored • Utilise player voting system to measure performance for selection and player improvement • Compatibility and player enjoyment within teams will be an important consideration. • Players who become unavailable for selection will not automatically be reinstated to the same rink/division. 5

Any reports of bad behaviour during Pennants (both on and off the green) that diminish the good reputation of the Sorrento Bowling Club will put ongoing selection at risk. Immediately before and after games, at the Pennant board or in the bar is not the right time or place for rational, fair and confidential discussion between players and selectors to resolve issues. Representing Sorrento Bowling Club is a privilege. We respect our team mates and our opponents and we value our good reputation in the bowling community.
