elcome to our June 2014 newsletter. There were only a few problems/complaints/issues with the April edition. Despite our attempt to make sure we spelt everyone’s name correctly we still managed to get Anne Lilley’s name wrong. Apologies. We also received a letter from a reader who felt we had not made enough of the fact that the same team had won the Men’s Fours for the last three years. There is a reply to this letter in “Letters to the Editors” on page 43 .

There was concern expressed that we had made Danny look bald and taken out some of Alan’s dreadlocks! This can be blamed on your Editor who is trying to teach himself how to Photoshop out obtrusive background from a photograph.

Please remember we love feedback on our newsletter so please let us have your comments on the content, layout, photos etc. After doing the newsletter for so many years we sometimes wonder whether we are still providing members with a regular informative and entertaining booklet. So send in your feed-back! We would again like to appeal to members to read the electronic version of our newsletter. Printed copies now cost almost $4 each so if you read the one e-mailed to you it will save money. You don’t have to worry about using up your broadband allowance as the link provided requires very little. So next time just click it on. Did you hear that other bowling clubs now call a short bowl “A Robbo”? It looks as if this term will soon be internationally recognised. Well done to Peter Robson! It must be the first time a “special strategic” shot in bowls has been named after a bowler!

Useful Body Language and Bowls Signs Hand and arm signals are recommended for rapid transmission of information. These silent signals are preferred on a bowling green as they are normally pre-arranged and understood by the Team!

More grass/less grass

Did you hear that in last season’s Pennants Trevor Orton’s rink managed 16 wins and 3 losses in 19 matches in 3 Blue on Saturday? Trevor’s team consisted of Gavan Ebsworth (19 matches), Steve Mortimer (16), Keith Cooper (12), Ian Marshall (3), Brian Saul (3), Peter Bartlett (3) and Wayne Gray (1). Did you hear that your Editor managed to return home (after an Over 60’s game at Osborne Park) with only three of his own bowls and one “odd one”? With some help from Barry Stewart the owner of the odd bowl was tracked down in Armadale. An exchange of the two odd bowls was arranged at the Perth station where the two absent-minded bowlers met to swop bowls. Did you know that Ron Kuziela has been “Bowler of the Year” three times in the last five years? Did you hear that four of our umpires, Jan Cook, Lee Leach, Brian Clausen and Jim Ironside kindly gave a few hours of their time to umpire at the 35th Australian Blind Bowls National Championship held this year in Perth at the Bedford Bowling Club during late April and early May.

People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.” - Cicero, 55 BC So, evidently we’ve learnt bugger all over the past 2068 years.

Did you know that 27 years ago John Forkin, who was in the real estate business at the time, sold May and Bill Leyland’s house and then found them another thereby getting a double commission? May and Bill encouraged him to take up lawn bowls and he has been bowling like a champion ever since. Did you know an interesting but little known fact? The first testicular guard (box) was used in cricket in 1874. The first cricket safety helmet was used in 1974. Which means it took 100 years for men to realise that their brains may also be important! We need to thank John Sturk and Ken Vercoe for the beautiful cover they made

for the septic tank area alongside the barbecue. Barry Bradshaw thinks it will be good when we have a jazz band to entertain us! Also a special word of thanks to Dick Merton who planted the petunias alongside the pathway into our Club. Ray Stapledon’s portulacas (donated by Tom Nasuti) were unfortunately “mowed” by a Greenkeeper so they are no more! Judith Skeet has asked me to inform members that St. Johns are running a “First Responder” demonstration and presentation on Tuesday 17th June 2014 at 10am. If you want to attend please contact me as I have more details. Some other dates for your diary are the Beyondblue Roadshow to be conducted at our Club on Sunday 25th May running from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and our AGM on Sunday 6th July 2014 commencing at 10am. Finally please spare a thought for the man who told his wife that he was going to China on that ill fated Malaysian flight MH 370 and now can’t come out of his girlfriend’s flat !! – Neville Odell

Men’s Captain’s Report

ith the Pennant season now behind us the Match committee will still be focusing on Thursday and Saturday Social bowls, sponsored events and other events that have been successful in the past. These events will hopefully encourage bowlers to support the club during the cooler months (weather permitting). The “Handicapped Fours” which were postponed due to wet weather will be rescheduled on Saturday 14 June. ”Dash for Cash” commences end of May. Once again we thank Barry Bradshaw and his company Safeway Security Screens for their continued support of this event. Scrounger’s has proved to be a popular Sunday morning event. Thanks go to Ron Kuziela for organising this event. The “Fish and Chips” days have been very successful and we hope to organise at least two of these events in the coming months. A report from Brian Clausen on the new “Bowls Performance Sub-committee” is included in this newsletter on page 28. We hope this information assists you in understanding what we are trying to achieve in ensuring the future of the Bowls component of our Club.

Lighting of C and D greens will ensure a very healthy Community Bowls participation during the summer months. Volunteers are required to organise this event. Can you let me know if you are able to assist? We are also looking into ways of utilising the lights for our members. All in all, depending on the weather the Match committee chaired by Trevor Orton in conjunction with support from Greens committee and the other Men’s committee will make winter bowling as enjoyable as possible. – ABBA “More hands make light work”

Men’s Selector’s Report

enerally the Club had a successful season with a number of new players joining and playing pennants. As stated in my first report the Selection Committee wanted to provide as many players as possible with the opportunity to play Pennants by entering extra teams on both Thursday and Saturday. Thursday Pennants: 3 Blue won the Pennant by half a point to book a place in the Pennant play off unfortunately they were beaten by Warwick who had won 3 Gold. Our 4 Blue side, who had lost their first 3 games of the season, won their promotion final to enable the Club to maintain one 3rd Division side after 3 Gold were relegated after losing their last game. Our 5 Gold 1 side also qualified for the play-offs but were beaten by Merriwa. Our Club fielded 9 sides on Thursday which was an increase of one side from last season and most were in a position to play finals right up to the end of the season. Saturday Pennants. Similar to Thursday 3 Blue was the most successful team winning their promotion play off in convincing fashion against Osborne Park to gain promotion to 2 Blue next season. Other sides to play finals were 4 Blue, 4 Gold and 6 Blue who all made the promotion play off. In an exciting climax to the season our 1 White side achieved 7.5 points at home against Safety Bay in the last game to jump from last place to 6th place and therefore avoid relegation in the tightest competition surely of all time which saw 1.5 points separate 5th to 10th on the ladder.

Our 2 Gold side unfortunately struggled in February losing a number of consecutive games which saw them slump to 7th on the ladder, while our 5 Gold side missed the play off by only half a point. On behalf of the Selection Committee I would like to thank all the players for their support and their manner they accepted the decisions of the Committee. We would also like to congratulate all the teams who achieved 8 badges this season and also to the weekly pot winners which saw some large winning margins achieved. Lastly I would like to thank my fellow selectors Ron Burroughs, Steve Draper, Noel Summers and Daniel Woodrow for their guidance, time and effort. – Rob Tozer

Ladies Pennant Wind-up Luncheon

orty seven ladies attended our after Pennant luncheon on the 5th March. The luncheon was held in our club rooms and catered for by Ross and Trish (Silver Fern Caterers). The food was scrumptious, drinks smilingly served by Paul and Ron and most importantly, the atmosphere was alive with comradeship and laughter.

I wish to thank all for making it such a success-especially the 47 ladies who attended. – Annie Taylor

Amazing Finish to Men’s 1 White (Saturday)

fter an indifferent 2013/14 season, the Men’s Saturday 1 White team was staring down the barrel with one game to go. The Sorrento team was sitting on the bottom of the ladder and facing demotion. The slight glimmer of hope was that Sorrento was only 7 points from the 5th side and if they achieved the full aggregate count and other results went their way, could finish anywhere between 5th and 10th position on the ladder. Needing the 8 points, having only won 6 aggregates for the season and having lost its last 6 games, Sorrento went into battle against Safety Bay who was in 5th 10

position – a big effort was needed by the home side Sorrento. Ron Kuziela and his team of Brian Clausen, John Dilley and Peter Crow set the pace by jumping out to a 10 shot to 1 lead after 6 ends. They led 14 to 8 after 15 and won their last 6 ends to be the big winners of the day by 19 shots. Ron Kuziela was the stand out player for the rink with all other players having an impact during the day. Ron Rogers’ team of Geoff Murray, Jim Welch and Mick Martin also got off to a good start and led 22 to 7 after 16 ends. A solid team performance saw them still leading 22 to 12 after 19 ends and running out to a decisive 14 shot win. Daniel Woodrow’s team of Steve Draper, Bruce Eagles and Ross Cunningham were locked in a tight game with scores 10 to 9 after 11 ends. With Ross playing really well in his first outing as a third, they got to a lead of 18 to 13 after 17 ends, finally winning by 11 shots. The final rink was Brian Collins, Richard Bone, John Brown and skip Ian Linford. In a low scoring game, Ian’s team led 9 shots to 3 after 6 and 18 to 11 after 16 ends. With 7 points to Sorrento safe, the Safety Bay boys fought back to try and get at least 1 point. Sorrento still led by 3 shots with 1 end to play. After the seconds completed their bowls, Sorrento held one shot and the 8 points looked good. However Safety Bay again hit back and held 3 shots with each Skipper having 1 bowl to play. Neither skipper was able to change the count with their last bowl and each side came away with a draw and ½ a point. Little did we know at the end of the game how important the 7 ½ points would turn out to be other than it put us ahead of Safety Bay due to a greater percentage. Phone calls between Clubs were under way. As it turned out, besides our own great effort, someone was looking after us because the other results fell our way. The bottom side finished with 60.5 points and teams finishing 6th to 9th all finished with 61.5 points. Sorrento having got to 61.5 points courtesy of the 7 ½ points against Safety Bay, jumped from 10th on the ladder to 6th due to its higher percentage and thus avoided relegation or having to play off to avoid relegation. If Sorrento had only got 7 points and not 7 ½ points in the final game, we would 11

have finished 9th and would have been relegated from 1st Division White. Safety Bay, who started the day in 5th position, went home to find out that they had slipped from 5th to 9th and were relegated. As in previous years, 1 White has proved to be a close competition and every result counts. Let’s hope next year we don’t let games get away from us over the concluding ends and we perform to a higher level to avoid relying on the last game and some other miracle results. – Richard Bone

Husband’s Text!

oney it’s me. I don’t want to alarm you but I was hit by a car as I was leaving the office. Paula brought me to the hospital. They have checked me over and done some tests and some x-rays. The blow to my head was severe. Fortunately it did not cause any serious internal injury. However I have three broken ribs, I have a compound fracture in the left leg, and they think they may have to amputate my right foot.” Wife’s Response: “Who is Paula?

Division 3 Blue (Saturday) Win Promotion

fter a solid performance for the season this team managed to finish in second place, well behind Bassendean. However, they produced a great all round effort to win the finals play-offs, to earn promotion to 2nd Division next season. In the morning game we beat Mundaring 99/61 aided by Bob Mulroy’s team of Neville Odell, Tiger Hogan and Barry Jones with their 38/11 win. After lunch and in the final we accounted for Osborne Park 81/50 with Ray Stapledon’s rink of Ian Marshall, John Abercrombie and Russell Lockwood easy winners 33/10. Trevor Orton’s rink had two good wins, Ray Stapledon’s rink had two wins and Bob Mulroy and Colin Campbell’s rinks both had one win each. – Ray Stapledon:Team Captain 12

The Barber

guy stuck his head into a barbershop and asked, ‘How long before I can get a haircut? The barber looked around the shop full of customers and said, ‘About 2 hours.’ The guy left. A few days later, the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked, ‘How long before I can get a haircut?’ The barber looked around at the shop and said, ‘About 3 hours.’ The guy left. A week later, the same guy stuck his head in the shop and asked, ‘How long before I can get a haircut?’ The barber looked around the shop and said, ‘About an hour and a half’ .The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said, ‘Hey, Bob, do me a favour, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but he never comes back’. A little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically. Division 4 Blue (Thursday) Win Promotion

here was high drama both on and off the green before Thursday’s Division 4 Blue squad ended a roller coaster ride-by winning its grand final promotion clash against Wanneroo. Not only was it Sorrento’s only Thursday team still alive, it was a miracle the players were there in the first place after a woeful start to the season. After three rounds the Sorrento lads had suffered aggregate losses to Wanneroo (70-42), Bedford (69-51) and Merriwa (59-50) to have collected just two competition points. A healthy round four win against Nollamara kicked-started Sorrento’s campaign and, apart from a couple of hiccups, the squad worked its way into the grand final at Wanneroo via semi-final success over Bedford. 14

Starting a clear underdog, things didn’t look too flash when Neil Mclaughlan’s team found itself six-down on the first end with one bowl to come. But Neil made it one to count and reduced the damage to a single shot. Then, late in the game with the result, and indeed the aggregate, in the balance Neil found himself left to do something about a five-shot deficit. This time he did one better by playing his “shot of the season” and converting the head into a one-up situation and ultimate 20-12 win. Meanwhile, things were heating up on the adjoining rink after Mike Hodge inadvertently kicked a bowl away before the outcome of a disputed point had been resolved. An umpire was called and the shot awarded to the home team. Nevertheless, the indefatigable and 91-year-old Arthur Richards rallied his troops for a 17-17 draw. All the drama on the other rink started before the roll-up. Colin Bangs pulled out 90 minutes before the start with a medical condition, triggering a frantic search for a legal replacement. With popsticks scheduled at Sorrento that afternoon, several players were approached as they walked through the gate with the view to replacing Colin. Former President Ian Marshall got busy on the phone and rang one of his contacts at Bowls W.A. to check on eligibility. After a couple of blokes were ruled out, a calm, cool and collected Tony Friedlieb casually strolled through the front door. His day was about to change – RAPIDLY. Cleared to play, Tony dashed off home to change and said he would drive directly to Wanneroo. But in the heat of the moment he arrived only to discover he had left his bowls in his locker at Sorrento. With no time to retrieve them, Tony had no other choice than to use Skipper Rob Tozer’s remaining two bowls, which were identical in make and size to his own. And he did to very good effect as Rob’s rink won a hard-fought contest 23-18.

Following the drubbing at the hands of Wanneroo in the opening game of the season Sorrento, a whole 147 days later, had managed to exact the sweetest of revenge. PS: Thanks to Ken Hollick for the above photo – Jim Woodward

Men’s Novices

t took 32 ends and a perfect back-hand draw shot for Rick Munt to down his opponent Stan Brickell in the final of the Men’s Novices. The game was ten all after eleven ends and then Rick won the next eight to lead 2110. Stan fought back to 18-21. Rick then managed to get up to 24-23 and on what proved to be the last end Stan held two shots for game. With his last bowl Rick produced a “bomb” to pick up the jack and take it into the ditch for shot and the game! Well done to both players for a great game. Footnote: At the time Rick’s last bowl was considered to be a strong contender for “bowl of the year” but ........... (See below) – Ray Stapledon

Bowl of the Season

e have already written in the Men’s Novices write-up (see above) about a “classic” bowl, but this one certainly qualifies for the “Top Shot”.

It was the last end and the score 22/22! Skipper Tony stands on mat FIVE down and holding his bowl for the last one for the game. He bowls on the wide hand (backhand). Shot bowl is a resting toucher sitting on the boundary line on edge of ditch. His bowl draws in beautifully (to the delight of his team) touches the opposition bowl, pushing it out of bounds and rests on Kitty for shot. Win 23/22. My Top Shot goes to Tony Pilgrim. – Ray Stapledon

Daniel Woodrow Wins “Brownlow”

he count for the best performer in Saturday 1 White Division for the 2013/14 season was held in April 2014. A good roll up of players and partners were in attendance and it was pleasing that a number of fellow diners at the Sorrento Café enjoyed watching the count and listening to the comments on how the players 16

performances were perceived by their rink colleagues. This was the 13th year that the Brownlow count was held. There have been 7 previous winners with 3 players having won the trophy on more than one occasion. Geoff Murray has been the winner for the past two years and was considered to be one of the favourites to win again. A maximum of 15 points could be allocated for each game by the other members of the rink and a total of 16 games could be used for the count. This year 25 players were used within 1 White and a close count was expected. After the first 9 games, 6 points separated the top 3 scorers. Ron Kuziela led the way on 105 points followed by Daniel Woodrow on 102 and Geoff Murray on 99. Nobody could close the gap on these 3 players over the remaining 8 games with each of the three continuing to play outstanding bowls. Daniel and Geoff finished slightly stronger in the final voting seeing them jump into the top 2 positions with Daniel being announced the winner of the Brownlow for the 2013/2014 season. For the season, Daniel skippered his rink to 10 wins and a draw while Ron skippered his rink to 9 wins and a draw. Geoff maintained his position as the top lead for the Club. The voting supported the general feeling that these 3 players were the stand outs of the playing group for this season. Hot Hints from Heardie

n this newsletter we will discuss the most important person in the team viz the Lead. Good Leaders are considered the most valuable player in the side and will often be first pick by Skippers. A Leader playing well gives the Skipper full control of the head and allows him to dictate the game. Not many games are lost when the Skipper has full control of most ends. A good leader must have good communications with the Skipper and must discuss the length of ends required either prior to the start or after the roll -up. He/she must become an expert in rolling the jack. A Lead must not just roll it. Positioning needs to be precise as the length of ends is very important in controlling the game. Leaders should practice rolling the jack. Remember Leaders have first use of the conditions and should play all their bowls on the best side of the green unless otherwise directed. Short bowls from a Leader are a disaster and place pressure on their team, leaders having an off day should resort to playing their bowls long. Your back bowls will never go astray. A Lead should avoid playing niggle shots when no direction has been given by the Skipper as there are other players in your team to play the shot. The main object is for the Lead is to draw two close bowls to the jack. If a Lead has a toucher with the first bowl (or close enough to be one) the Lead must make sure their second bowl finishes behind the head. Good teams are built around good leaders and their role can be the strength of that team. Remember bowls is a team effort, and fitness plays an important part of bowls. – Graeme Heard 19

Men’s Match Committee Report Men’s Pairs Due to long weekends and State events intervening, the Club Pairs Championship was conducted over three weeks this year. A field of 28 teams entered, which meant an alignment round was necessary. All semifinalists were decided after the first week. In the major semi-final, Trevor Orton and Gavan Ebsworth played Ron Kuziela and Bob Mulroy in the top half of the draw, and Graeme Heard and Jim Ironside played Tony Sabatino and Ken Giles in the bottom half. The plate semi-finals pitted Peter Snow and Brian Self against Dick Merton and Ross Cunningham, and Tony Pilgrim and Derek Smith against Brad Williams and Peter Blake. The respective winners then played off in the final. In something of a surprise, all major finalists were from Third Division sides, with Trevor Orton and Gavan Ebsworth triumphing over Graeme Heard and Jim Ironside in the Major final. Brad Williams and Peter Blake won the Plate event over Brian Self and Peter Snow. Congratulations to all winners. Men’s Veterans A small field of 15 entered this event, and with one “no show” on the morning, so only 14 participated. Sectional play reduced the field down to five winners after the first day, and an alignment round was then conducted. The section winners were Alan Wood, Neville Odell, Neil McLaughlan, Graeme Heard and John Collishaw. Graeme then beat both John in an alignment round, and Neil in the semi-final, where he met Alan Wood who had defeated Neville Odell. In the final Graeme 20

looked like he was running away with the title, but Alan staged a comeback, going down 25-20 in the end. Congratulations Graeme and to all who made the effort this year Crow’s Feat Members may not realise this, but Peter Crow has set a Club record by winning the Men’s Championship Fours in 2014 making it his third consecutive win in this event. The feat is also shared by his lead Brian Collins and third Brian Lucas. Ric Hutchinson played in the 2012 win and John Godfrey in 2013 and 2014. We understand that the team will again form in 2015 to try and make it four in a row. Well done gents. Easter Carnival A total of 20 teams entered this year’s Easter Carnival for the Saturday play and 22 teams for Monday. There were visiting players from Warwick, Joondalup, Yokine, Innaloo, Scarborough and Mt. Lawley this year. Twilight Pairs Another record-breaking season of Twilight Pairs concluded on April 15th. This competition continues to be extremely popular, with 44 pairs competing on one evening, and over 140 different bowlers participating at some stage. 13 bowl21

We witnessed several “8 badges”, a remarkable 24-24 score line (in 14 ends!) and even one “whitewash” where one team won all 14 ends and the other team - whose names shall remain anonymous - won none. The overall competition where the best 10 cards are totalled was extremely tight. Brian Saul looked to have this prize all wrapped up with 2 weeks to go, but was pipped by 1 shot by Tony Sabatino and Dick Currie on the last week. Trish Cunningham won the prize for the highest-finishing lady. Twilight bowls begins again on November 11th 2014, so get your pair together for another year of Twilights. Mens Handicap Fours The 10th May dawned cool and showery, and steady rain around lunchtime unfortunately saw a premature end for the 22 teams who nominated. But we still enjoyed Ray Green’s hospitality until the end. Thanks again to Ray for his generous sponsorship of these events. Ladies Match Committee Report

Ladies Veteran’s Singles This year 14 ladies entered this event which was disappointing for the Match Committee. On the first day there were some very close matches with varying results. Eight ladies progressed through to the semi finals. 22

The semi finals were held on the morning of the 2nd April with only 3 matches to be played due to one player withdrawing due to illness. This enabled Jean Baker to progress to the final of the Plate. The semi final Plate game was between Denise Odell and Annie Taylor. Denise played excellent bowls and proceeded to the final. Better luck Annie next year. The semi final of the Major saw Carmel Hyde versus Fran Bracknell and Beth McCormack versus Beryl Tutt. The match between Carmel and Fran saw some exciting bowls played by both players with the scores being even on four occasions. Beth and Beryl had a great tussle with Beth finally running out the winner. The final was held in the afternoon between Fran Bracknell and Beth McCormack and the Plate between Denise Odell and Jean Baker. Fran was away to a very good start and led for the first six ends, then Beth drew level at 6 all. From then onwards it was 9 all on the 13th end, 11 all on the 16th end, and 12 all on the 18th end, with Beth going on to win this hard fought match. Congratulations go to Beth on this victory and commiserations to Fran but better luck next year. The Plate was won by Denise Odell who played some very exciting bowls. It was noticed by some of the spectators that Denise and Jean both played with black bowls. It was suggested that one of them should invest in a set of coloured bowls to assist the spectators and the cheeky reply was “I am happy to play with coloured bowls providing the club buys them for me to use”. Jean Baker put in a great effort and was a gracious loser. Congratulations go to both these ladies for making the final of the Plate. – Helen Ironside

n Wednesday 16th April in beautiful warm, calm conditions, the ladies of Sorrento Bowling Club held their inaugural Trevors Carpets Handicap Triples. This event was open to all women members of our club only. The funds for this event were generously provided by Ray Green from Trevors Carpets, whose bountiful sponsorship makes these types of events possible. The sixteen teams were put together on a points basis by our women’s Selection Committee. This process generated fairly evenly matched groupings, which gave everyone a good chance of winning some prize money. There were prizes given for each game winner of the three rounds of 11 ends. Then money was awarded for round winners, overall first and second and ‘next year’s winners’ (woodenspooners). There were very few teams who did not win some money at all during the day. Ray Green also very generously made drinks available at his expense at lunchtime and at the end of the day’s play. This generosity was available for all players 25

and also workers who helped with the event in any way. Joan and some very kind helpers, who didn’t play, put together a wonderful buffet lunch of cold meats and salads. A fabulous crumble was made for dessert with ice cream being kindly donated by Kishore from Wendy’s Ice creams at Warwick. Some very kind men members provided help with umpiring, results recording, organisation around the greens and general tasks that needed doing during the day. Without their assistance, some of the women would have had to be doing these chores instead of playing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and most are eagerly looking forward to repeating the same event at the completion of the next bowling season. It was a fantastic way of winding up a great season and having some fun to celebrate another successful bowling year. Croquet Report

orrento held an inaugural Ladies Tournament on Friday 16th May. Twelve Ladies attended. Great merriment was had by all and we experienced three seasons in one day, like Victoria, and that goes further by a visitor Elaine Leviston from Ballarat Western Croquet Club who won the day with Kerry Bomford being 26

pipped at the post. Marion Smith and Mary Gardner played for 3rd and 4th spot with Marion being the winner. Sorrento Croquet Club was requested by West Australian Croquet Association (WACA) to host their Bi Annual Presidents meeting, which was on held on Saturday 17th May. This event proved most successful with those attending Presidents that we have a strong executive committee leading W.A. Croquet. Following the meeting, they enjoyed a lavish afternoon tea and social interaction. New player to our Club Robyn Rowe was so enamoured by her new mallet, taking two hoops in one go, then doing her perfect first jump shot, that she has decided to take her mallet to bed instead of her husband. (Wonder how her husband took this?). Out and About: Terry Harvey and Peter Hamilton entered the Autumn Nights Pennants Tournament held on Tuesday nights over six weeks. Things went well for them at first; they won the first three matches and beat one of the top seeds, only to be rolled the next week by one of the bottom seeded teams! By the final week they were placed third and needed to win 4:1 to be in the final, unfortunately they didn’t cut it. End result they came 4th. Not a bad effort and a very enjoyable competition. Kathy and Peter Hamilton travelled to Albany to compete in the W.A. State Masters Games. This comprised various sports from swimming and rowing, to athletics, cross country running and Croquet. Day 1 was a dream runs with them both winning every match. Day 2 they found harder to keep up the momentum and they won one game, which dropped them from equal first place down to fifth place. Tribute to Cosimo (â€œCharlieâ€?) Maiolo

ur dear friend and fellow bowler, Charlie Maiolo passed away peacefully in the Joondalup Private Hospital on the 16th March 2014 surrounded by his loving family Charlie was born in Nardodipace, Calabria, Italy in 1936 and came to Australia in 1956. He married Rosa in 1963 and they were married for 50 years. They had four children: Lorenzo, Anna, Marina and Nadia and also nine grand children and one not born yet . Charlie retired after many years as a manager at the Ingham chicken factory and he joined the Sorrento bowling club in 2002. He always enjoyed his bowls and was often seen practising sometimes nearly every day. His bowls were always well polished as was his car that was washed and polished every week. Herbie remembers Charlie playing at the Snake Pit at Scarborough in a Rock and Roll band. His family was most important to Charlie and we all experienced him leaving immediately after a bowls game to go to Mandurah for a barbie. Honesty was his ideal, work his life and his family his affection. Charlie will be missed by all his friends at the Sorrento Bowling Club â€“ Monique Kopec

Bowls Performance Sub-committee

he Bowls Performance sub-committee was formed primarily to facilitate bowls training in conjunction with the Bowls Manager. Currently in the absence of the Bowls Manager the sub-committee has been allocated the role of delivering specialized training and bowls education to an identified area of need. To this end we have two initiatives planned, one of which will be in operation at the time of printing. The first initiative is a Development Squad formed from Club members consisting of 24 players (12 women and 12 men). The intention is to assist these players to progress their skills to the next level. 28

The other initiative is a LEADS course planned to commence on Saturday 21st June, for which nominations are currently being sought. The course takes participants through all aspects of LEADING from “Jack Skills to Tactics”. We do have plans for our wider membership as the season draws closer. Our overall strategy is to implement better training practices for our members to increase their bowling fulfilment and enjoyment. The Bowls Performance Sub-committee contact person is Brian Clausen. Bar Survey Results

would like to thank the many members who responded to the bar survey questionnaire sent out in March. The survey was conducted via a member e-mail request asking members to complete a multiple choice questionnaire that sought opinions about the Club’s bar operations. The form contained seven multiple choice questions together with the opportunity for members to offer suggestions to improve the bar’s level performance. Response was great with around 20% of members completing the survey. Responses were received from the following broad categories of members: • 15% of respondents are occasional users of the bar • 38% are pennant players or pennant players who also use the bar occasionally 29

• 38% attend the bar on a number of days during the week, and • 9% attend on most days of the week What the respondents said was: • 66% are satisfied or very satisfied with the overall operation of the bar. • 22% are unsure •12% are either unsatisfied or very unsatisfied. • 58% said that they are satisfied or very satisfied with the length of time it takes to get served. • 19% are unsure • 23% are unsatisfied or very unsatisfied. • 68% are satisfied or very satisfied with the knowledge and attitude of bar staff. • 27% are unsure • 5% are unsatisfied or very unsatisfied • 67% are satisfied or very satisfied with the products offered. • 28% are unsure • 5% are unsatisfied or very unsatisfied • 72% are satisfied or very satisfied with the prices charged. • 16% are unsure • 12% are unsatisfied •20% thought the bar is somewhat better than they have experienced at other clubs • 49% thought that it is about the same • 16% thought that it is somewhat worse and 2% thought that it is much worse • 15% are unsure • 45% of respondents are satisfied with the appearance of the bar • 32% are unsure • 23% thought it needs improvement Common comments made by respondents in their questionnaires are: 1. The entire bar should be used to serve customers not just one end 30

2. Inequitable arrangements occurred when serving people (serving customers out of turn) 3. Staff should wear uniforms and name badges 4. Food should be served at the bar 5. The Club needs to give more back to members (happy hours, better eats, occasional free drinks etc.) It was planned to give one lucky respondent a prize. Unfortunately the way that the survey is conducted, all personal e-mail details are removed before the completed surveys are forwarded on. While this is great for anonymity it also makes awarding a prize impossible. If you strive to be the “Best bowling club in Western Australia” it is necessary to also have the best bar operation. In my view members who are unsure or undecided about the quality and operation of the bar are members who we have failed to impress. Therefore there remains considerable work to be done to impress these members and those who are unsatisfied with various aspects of the bar’s operation. All information relevant to the survey, including individual questionnaires, has been handed over to the Executive of the Club for their deliberation and subsequent action. Greens and Grounds

ou will have noticed that the winter maintenance has commenced with all greens having been cored and “B” green rubber on the southern side having been removed and by the time this goes to print we would have hoped to have the new rubber installed. As this is a new type of belting we intend to trial it for at least one season using old belting to patch the other ditches when the need arises, then assess the new rubber to see if it does do what the manufacturers state it will do. If the trial is satisfactory we will budget to spend enough each year to eventually replace all our old ones with this newer product, the down side as always is the cost, but because we have to replace all within the next few years anyway the variance will not be excessive. The continued non availability of “A” green is a worry to us but we believe it is moving forward to where we wish it to be. It is expected that we will have to do some light sanding in the early spring and follow up fertilising. The other four 31

will be assessed for Pennant use, with “A” being assessed a little later. We accept responsibility for the unavailability of this green for over 12 months, however it is pleasing to note that we do not have to carry out that type of renovation on any of the other greens in the near future. If we ever have to we have learnt a lot from this saga. We intend to rotate the use of our greens on a regular basis to ensure we rest them all as much as possible so please take note of the green usage board outside the front door and follow its instructions. We may even change from East/West to North/South to overcome wear. Watch for notices on greens for a change of this nature. You will have seen some activity close to “D”&”C” on the southern boundaries, this is the installation of the lights which will allow four of our greens to be used at night. What we need to do now is support suggestions to utilise these facilities, especially during the summer. The “Thumbs Up “ club and other volunteers continue to do a great deal of good work around the surrounds and if anyone is willing to join this group you will be gratefully accepted into the group. You do not have to attend every Monday if you have a commitment , but we can use any help that we can get, start time 7.30am – 8am until approx. midday. – Kevin Cook: Chairperson of Greens

Getting to Know Our Friends He goes out to bowl strapped up like Phar Lap but the leg supports cannot mask the enthusiasm Rob Tozer has for his role as Sorrento’s new chairman of selectors. A 58-year-old mathematics teacher, Rob doesn’t need to do his sums to know that after just one year in the job, he and fellow selectors have overseen the promotion of three Pennant squads and the relegation of just one. The performance of Sorrento on the green during the 2013-14 season plus the spirit and camaraderie at the club has whet his appetite for more and Rob looks forward to further success on his watch. Rob decided to throw his hat in the ring when, without any great aspirations for the crucial position, a few club members suggested he should. There was sound reason behind that urging because Rob has a perfect pedigree to perform his new task. Raised in the Mt. Lawley area and a student of Christian Brothers College at Highgate Rob has a deep and intimate connection to sport both on and off the field. He is a life member of the North Beach Cricket Club after serving 30 years as a player and coach as well as filling the positions of president, treasurer and selector. As a player he was a handy batsman but doesn’t talk generously about the amount of spin he was able to impart with his left arm orthodox deliveries. Rob was himself bitten by the bowling bug during his stint as a teacher at Newman where he began by playing scroungers. He has also taught at Churchlands and Kellerberrin before settling at Carine High School which enabled him to link up with Sorrento. Apart from the satisfaction of seeing Thursday’s Division 3 Blue and Division 4 Blue and Saturday’s Division 3 Blue squads gain promotion Rob says another highlight has been working with his fellow selectors. “We’ve all got on well together --- it’s been a good combination and we’ve never had any disagreements,” he said recently. 33

But rather than rest on his laurels, Rob says the whole selection process at Sorrento is going to come under review. He said he is excited by a selection model vastly experienced club member and Division 1 White player Brian Clausen wants to implement. Without revealing all the details, Rob says feedback and more discussion between the Selectors and Skippers is a vital ingredient as is paying close attention to the pre-season trials. “You can’t tell how players are going just by looking at the scoreboard,” he said. “But there’s a lot of information to gather from 30 or so Skippers so we have to work out what is the best way to do that. “But having said that, our skippers are pretty well balanced in giving honest appraisals.” Rob says he is comfortable with what comes across as a relaxed culture at Sorrento. “People wish to do well and when the majority go out there they are trying to do that,” he said. “People have good days and bad days but at the end of the day it’s just a game. “But people accept they sometimes have to be pushed sideways or downwards and they tend to accept that reasonably well.” Rob said he has been encouraged by the fact that the club has managed to attract a few younger players. “When I say younger blokes you are looking at blokes less than 60 --- which is a pretty loose definition of younger,” he said. “But it is compared to the age of the majority of our players.” Most importantly, Rob Tozer is very much a “hands-on-the-wheel” selector. The best example of that came in Sorrento’s Saturday Division 4 Blue away clash against the far-more-fancied Bassendean squad in February. After a ferocious tussle between the eight teams, the aggregate was tied with only one end of the contest remaining. Bassendean, with a vocal and schooner-clutching cheer squad watching, thought they had it in the bag when the home skipper, with his last bowl of the afternoon managed to get within a few centimetres of the kitty to grab a one-shot advantage. But our Rob picked up his last bowl and drew a deep breath before despatching it towards the head. The draw with his green Vector VS drifted promisingly towards 34

its target but when Rob nudged the kitty and followed it gently, the underdog and suddenly delirious Sorrento squad had a vital one-shot aggregate win under its belt. It was a truly magnificent final delivery and Rob would be the first to admit it turned more than any of the countless spinners he sent down for the North Beach Cricket Club. – Jim Woodward

Lady Delegate’s Report

he following points will be of interest to our bowling members:

• A Club President’s Forum was held on April 14th to facilitate information sharing between Clubs and Bowls W.A. • The Ladies Forum was held at South Perth Bowling Club on March 18th and a wide range of issues were discussed and resolved as follows:• Current extreme weather policy will continue next season • Saturday Ladies Pennants format will remain unchanged (change to a morning game not supported). • An earlier start time of 9.30 for Tuesday Pennants was not supported. • As per last season, it is likely that a Sunday Pennant game will be pro- grammed to ensure an early completion to Ladies Pennants. • The appropriate attire for Pennant games and above was again discussed. Bowls W.A. advised that Bowls Australia Attire Policy clearly states the required standard of dress, and requests that Clubs ensure that players adhere to this policy. • Des Jones has resigned as Chair, Bowls W.A. Greens and Infrastructure Committee, and has been replaced by Norm Anderson. • The 2015 National Side Series will be held in W.A. as the Northern Territory is unable to host the event. Bowls W.A. has called for expressions of interest from both Metro and Country Clubs interested in hosting the event, which will be held in April next year. The successful host Club will be advised following the Bowls W.A. Board meeting on 23rd May. • Bowls W.A. is considering the inclusion of the banks of the greens in the current non-smoking policy. Consideration is also being given to designated non-smoking areas being established by all Clubs for Pennant and above fixtures. • The Ladies Inter Region Round Robin Carnival was held at Sports Association 35

Bowling Club on April 12/13. The event was won by the Southern Region. Northern Region finished in third position. The Carnival will be hosted by the South Coastal Region in April next year. Finally, many thanks to Annie Taylor and her helpers for organizing the Ladies post Pennant lunch. It was a happy, relaxing day with great food, and plentiful liquid refreshment to help wash it down. Vale – Bill Broun

adly we need to report that one of our Life Members has passed away. Bill Broun joined as a member of the club in the early 1980s, and quickly established himself as an active and very useful member. In no time at all, he was a member of the executive, and served in a number or roles, including Secretary, and then later as President. Bill’s wife Brenda was also a very active member of our Club, and between them, they got very involved in the day to day running. Bill undertook a number of initiatives, including the revision of the constitution and by-laws, as well as being instrumental in the establishment of an additional green, this being “E” green. He along with Des Bennett, who also became a Life Member, were very active, at a time when the writer was President. Whilst Bill had quite a unique bowling action, he was keen on his bowls, and took part in most events. He was also instrumental in setting up what is now known as “The Twilight Pairs”, and sponsored this for many years, even after he left the club to move to Merriwa when he moved into one of the units. Bill was made a life member for his services, and all who knew him, felt that this was a worthy honour. Bill went on to play bowls at Merriwa, and was active in that club, as well as being heavily involved with the Bowls Past Presidents Bowls Club. Bill had turned ninety just a couple of month prior to his passing, which it seems, was due a minor mishap with a door whilst out shopping, and things developed from there. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends, and whilst only a few members 36

of the club turned up at the funeral service, they witnessed a very moving account from his children, with various and numerous stories about his life, especially about his penchant for cars, and the camping trips. Farewell Bill. – Ian Wittber

elcome to the new season. Sorrento has again entered 4 darts teams .Two on Tuesday in the Bluewater Association and two in the Sports and Bowling Club Association. It is still very early in the season but we are hoping for a good result but more importantly that all members enjoy themselves. The Club AGM has been held and we are currently looking at the annual darts trip and will advise soon. For those that may not have been aware this year’s donation to the Bowling Club was a 60 inch colour TV which has been located in the main bar area for all to enjoy. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank one of our members, Mr. Bruce Cross for making application and obtaining sponsorship for the Dart Club. Firstly there was a longish write up about the Plate plus photo and almost as an afterthought you mentioned the winners and no mention of the fact that the winners had won three years in a row, which I think is quite a feat. We have mentioned how well Peter has done, in the last three years in the Match Committee Report. – Neville and Denise Odell Lockers Having been to the Sorrento Bowling Club many times before as an enemy playing darts for the Greenwood hotel darts club. A good mate of mine and also a friendly fella called Spider Webb, who had been in my team for 15 years or so, found a liking to bowls, became a traitor, and moved to SBC telling me that bowls gets the testosterone going more than darts ever will. Bull#hit I said. Thanks to his advice I was playing Pennants within two years. The welcome, support and encouragement I have received from the Sorrento members has been overwhelming and a credit to the Club.
