President’s Report

elcome members to our half yearly meeting and a happy 2013 to all. Firstly, let me acknowledge the contribution made to this Club by one of its greatest members, Mr. Des Bennett.

Words cannot express the debt that we all owe Des for his generous and unselfish dedication to Sorrento over so many years. Thank you so much Des. We stand at the three-quarter mark of the current term of the Executive and committees and sub-committees. I am personally pleased with the way that things have gone.

Our performance should be measured against the six key performance criteria outlined in the Club’s strategic plan – 2020 Vision planning for the Future of the Sorrento Bowling Club. Following is a brief outline against these criterions: 1 Financial Viability The Treasurer will report on our financial position in his report. Suffice for me to say that we are doing well with bar trade up substantially. Importantly, what does this mean for members? Firstly, unlike many bowling clubs, and Sorrento in some past years, we are not living from hand to mouth and we have the financial resources to further develop the Club. It means that we can implement new capital programmes, maintain the Club’s facilities and contain membership fee increases.

2. Memberships and Marketing Membership has reached the heights that were achieved in 2008. We now have almost 650 members and with over 400 capitated bowling members we are now the largest bowling club in Western Australia. Unlike 2008, we have hopefully learned some lessons and will be more successful in retaining the almost one-hundred new members who have joined in the past months. Two important aspects of the recent growth are that, as evidenced by the large contingent of novice bowlers yesterday, many new members are taking up bowls and secondly because many of our new members are younger, the Club’s previous average age of 67 is coming down.

3. Club Environment I think the Club environment is going pretty well. Certainly most days and nights at the Club are buoyant. Older members will note that things are different in relation to dress standards and a few other things. Standards remain very important to the Club and our values will never be compromised. However we must also be conscious that

to attract a younger membership we need to be cognisant of the sort of environment that they are looking for are fundamental to our overall success.

4. Bar Operations and Club Usage As the Treasurer will report, our bar revenues are well up on previous years. The profits gained from the bar are a major source of income to the Club and help fund our various activities. The rapid growth in activity has caused some growing pains, particularly in relation to our systems and rostering and has stretched our volunteers.

5. Bowls Performance Last year was a great year for the Club with numerous promotions. Naturally 2013 will test our ability to maintain the levels achieved and to gain further promotions, but we will be doing our best.

6. Greens and Grounds The greens speak for themselves. I have received numerous comments that Sorrento has the best greens around.

Naturally we can do more but I think that the past eighteen months have gone pretty well. This takes me to the last five months of our term and what is planned. I said at the last AGM that we would be focusing on the development of business plans to guide the Club’s future development. Unfortunately with my extended stay overseas we have not made as much progress as I had hoped for. For a club to be successful we must implement well thought out plans and not make ad hoc and unguided decisions.

So, within the resources that we have, we will continue to drive this aspect.

Our Club premises are not large compared with most other bowling clubs and the building is not a very functional design with its L-shape and numerous pillars. The Council has not warmed to our various approaches to extend the premises and so we have developed an “inside-outside� strategy. This is designed around making our outside areas flow into the building thus increasing the amount of usable space for our members.

This strategy started with the erection of shade sails along the southern side of the building. The new BBQ facility is almost complete and adds considerably to the amount of usable under-cover space and extends our usable brick paved areas.

We are planning on erecting further shade sails on the eastern side of the building, next to the kitchen area and increasing the number of sails on the southern side. We also plan to convert the central window in the games area to a sliding door which will further integrate the outside areas with the clubhouse.

Other capital projects include a complete renovation and upgrade of all toilets.

The City of Joondalup has allocated $110,000 to this project in 2013/14 and has commenced initial planning. The Club has committed $10,000 to upgrade and expand our lockers. Council has also agreed to us connecting an outside toilet to the current septic system, which now makes such a project more viable.

I mentioned earlier that the rapid growth in Club membership and other activity has resulted in growing pains. Our current systems in place to manage membership, facility hire and other bookings are antiquated and inadequate and need to be replaced. We are currently investigating a new system that is based on “smart-cards’ that will greatly enhance our capability, but will require a financial investment by the Club.

The Club urgently needs to increase its lighting to the greens. Additional greens need to be lit in order to rest greens during our community bowls programme. Also, A Green will be renovated after the current bowls season and will not be ready for play for the start of the next community bowls season.

I wish to make a special mention of our numerous volunteers who help out in all manner of areas from the kitchen to the greens and gardens, general maintenance, bar, all aspects of bowls, croquet, raffles and much, much more. What sets Sorrento apart from other clubs is the willingness of members to hop in and help – whether that is for an hour here and there to the countless hours that many of our volunteers contribute.

It goes without saying that we still need more members to help. We are particularly short behind the bar. If you would like to get Responsible Serving of Alcohol accreditation (RSA or RSM) and help out in the exciting area of the Club’s operation then please see me or Glenn Boston. Special thanks to Ken Giles for his support in coordinating the volunteer programme.

On a sadder note, our current Secretary Ron Taylor is unable to continue on in the role after today and we require a replacement. We will be approaching members in this regard over the next few days. Many thanks to Ron for his tremendous contribution. Fortunately for the Club, Ron is willing to continue to make a contribution through the bar and in other capacities.

In conclusion, I wish to advise members that I will not be seeking re-election to the position of president at the next AGM but will be working with the Executive to consider replacements for myself and other members who may not be continuing.

Men’s Bowls Captains Report

W

elcome back to all bowlers for 2013. As we approach the business end of the Pennant season some divisions are well placed but others need a few good results to avoid the dreaded drop to a lower division. The selectors are doing as best as they can, unfortunately the unavailability list pre and post Xmas has put enormous pressure on team selections.

Club championships have commenced and congratulations to all winners so far and good luck to players participating in future events. The club expects quite a few State events including Country week over the next few months. This is the time when all committees require volunteers to assist. If you can spare some time helping out please contact Ken Giles, our Men’s Vice Captain.

Corporate bowls again is proving very successful, thanks to Russ, Jenni, Alan and all their helpers for running this event. It is great to see so many “new” members out on the greens during the week. I have been told by quite a few members that there is some talent amongst the new ones.

Congratulations to the Ladies for organising such a successful Gala day. It appears from comments around the club that it was the best one ever. Well done Anne and all your helpers.

The passing of Life member Des Bennett was a big shock and a big loss to the Sorrento Bowling Club. I would like to personally thank all Members who attended the funeral and were part of the “Guard of Honour”. It really was an impressive sight, I am sure Des would have been very proud. “Champions are very hard to replace” – ABBA

Ladies Gala Day

y very sincere thanks to all members who contributed in whatever way, whether by financial donations, sale goods or time and effort to ensure that our Annual Gala Day maintained its reputation as “a good day out”. The event was an outstanding success and we raised the very substantial amount of $4403 clear profit.

This was an increase of almost $500 on last year’s takings and considering that our sponsorship was reduced by $300 this year it was a remarkable achievement of which we can be justifiably proud.

The catering was first class, the table decorations and the “bevy of beauties” a creative masterpiece, the “Orange Sunrise” cocktails as good as a “pep” pill, the wine baskets a connoisseurs delight, the stalls a buyer’s paradise, the greens a pleasure and the bar a popular watering hole. Again, many thanks on a job well done.

Men’s Triples Championships

T

here were 16 teams that nominated for this event. This made life easy for the Match Committee as they did not have to bend their minds to line up an alignment round Round one was a mixture of some very close games and some lopsided victories which separated the teams to contest the championship and the plate.

Round two down to 8 teams in each category was more keenly fought leaving at the end of the day 4 teams in each play off and a week to consider their chances.

The Winners of the Major

In the championship semis Linford outfoxed Draper by 2 and Sabatino got caught in a ‘Snow-drift on the last two ends to go down by 2.

In the final Snow stormed home for with a comfortable win over Linford of 10 shots.

In the plate semis Eagles flew home on the last end to pick up 3 shots to beat Rolls by 1. Kuziela comfortably herded Heard into a corner winning by 19 shots.

In the final Eagles swooped home to a good victory over Kuziela of 9 shots.

Mixed Pairs Final

he oft-weather-delayed final of the Mixed Pairs will be played on Saturday 26th January (Australia Day) commencing at 1:00pm. All are welcome to watch Ron Rogers and Lee Leach take on Graeme and Nelly Heard in the major final. Beth McCormack and Kevin Scammell clash with Kath Harris and Trevor Orton in the plate final.

Twilight Pairs

(Every Tuesday Evening at 1630 – all welcome)

T

here have been seven rounds played so far, with around 50-60 players participating each week. A number of new and visiting bowlers take part, as well as a solid core of Sorrento club members. Any combination of pairs is allowed.

Weekly and season-long prizes are awarded. The season-long competition is decided by the greatest number of shots up for the best 10 cards submitted. So far Rob Tozer and Barry Stewart are showing the way, with Ken Giles and Marty Angelo not far behind. Ken Partridge and Mike Hodge are undefeated so far. I have an apology, and that is that the cards for Tuesday 8th January were inadvertently thrown out, so these cards will not be included in the season-long prizes. Sorry.

Men’s Novice Singles

U

nder normal circumstances, the final of the Sorrento Novice Singles Championship generates only a modicum of interest. But there was nothing normal about this year’s decider.

From an original field of 18 hopefuls, the final came down to a tussle between two of the most diverse characters imaginable. Nobody would have predicted that Ray Green, a soon-to-be 70 year old retired businessman, and Al Walton, a 26 year old roof carpenter, would slug it out for grand final glory.

From the vastly differing amount of hair on their respective heads to their actual paths through the doors of the Sorrento Bowling Club, it was a contrast of extremes.

Ray, the boss of Trevor’s Carpets, had long hankered to get out on the green after being involved in a watching capacity through his decade-long sponsorship of an annual bowls tournament in Dunsborough. But there was a slight problem if this desire was to become reality – Ray had a crook back. So, two years ago, Ray had major surgery in which 14 screws were inserted into his spine --- an operation which came with a warning not to even think about picking up a bowl for 12-months.

But there was a rapid transition with Ray, and a few mates, starting his bowling journey in Sorrento’s Friday corporate bowls evening, followed by lower grade Thursday Pennants and the decision to dip his toe into the Novice Singles Championship.

Al took a completely different route. With the recent closing of the nearby Glengarry Tavern, Al and about 20 of his mates, needed a new watering hole. Fortunately, the Sorrento Bowling Club gained the nod and so it was that Al, and his mates, beer in hand, began peering through the window at these strange people playing a game they had never even considered.

Things then began moving very quickly. Al bought a second hand set of bowls, and suddenly he was the one his mates were watching from the bar. Then, after only six weeks of having the occasional roll-up and not a single lesson, Al decided he was going to get serious. He announced to his disbelieving mates that he was going to enter the Novice Singles.

Thus Al, with his bright red bowls and Ray, with his obvious green set, began their championship quest. Each made the Sunday final after Al won and lost a game the previous day while Ray won both his contests.

In a bizarre quirk of the draw, Al was lucky to obtain a bye and a win the next day while Ray slaved away in extreme heat for two more wins, including a 27-end tussle against Phil Bilich to reach the final.

In front of an appreciative audience which applauded every good shot, Ray got away to a handy seven point lead. But below the surface he was struggling dangerously against the effects of dehydration and muscle stiffness. With the scores locked at 1515 a time-out was called to give both players a break in the horrendous conditions However, with Al in front 24-20 and needing only one more point for victory, Ray, by now hobbling with cramps and his vision blurred by dehydration and fatigue, announced he could no longer continue. But the incredible afternoon wasn’t over just yet.

Cook, a qualified nurse who, in the early 1950s attended primary school in Collie with Ray and who much later nursed Ray’s father in Collie Hospital.

Ray was bundled off in an ambulance to Charlie Gairdiner where temporary kidney failure was added to his list of ailments.

Ray is now fine after a couple of weeks off while Al has qualified to represent Sorrento in the State Novice Champions of Champions finals on April 13-14. .

Having climbed this unlikely ladder, Al has confessed he might seek a bit of coaching in order to hone his

undoubtable skills. We wish him well and may the fairytale continue.

Ladies Pairs Championship

T

he Ladies Pairs final was played on Wednesday 14th November 2012 in rather blustery conditions that saw many bowls on occasions heading off to the next rink as if they had minds of their own.

The Major final saw Judy Campbell and Beth McCormack play off against Carol Watson and Coral Smith. The play was of a high standard and many good bowls attracted the applause of the supporters. The game itself was even after every other end until the second last end when team Campbell scored a two and a further two on the last end to win by four shots. Well done to Judy and Beth on an excellent win and to Carol and Coral for being very competitive opposition.

The Plate Final was contested between Pauline Bourne and Jan Cook against Moira Dean and Beryl Tutt. This game also was neck and neck right up until the 17th end where Pauline and Jan had a two point lead going into the last end. Moira and Beryl scored a one on the last end allowing Pauline and Jan to take the Plate.

Congratulations to Pauline and Jan on their win but also to Moira and Beryl for being fantastic opponents.

This year was the first time that we have played three bowl pairs and the Match Committee believe that it was a great success and look forward to playing this format again next year.

Ladies Triples Championship

C

ongratulations to Beth McCormack, Pat Frawley and Judy Campbell on winning the Ladies Triples for 2012/13. It was a closely fought game against Pauline Bourne, Jan Cook and Coral Smith.

Pauline’s team lead up until eleventh end 8 to 7 until Beth’s team put their foot down and won every end from there on. The final score was 16 to 9.

Congratulations also to the Plate winners of Monique Kopec, Eleanor Adams and Betty Stern.

They too had a very close game against Clair Hanlon, Jean Middleditch and Shelley Jeffs.

This game could have gone either way up until 15th end when Monique’s team powered ahead and won the last 3 ends. There final score was 18 to 11.

It was great to see some of our new bowlers playing in the triples. We look forward and encourage you to enter in all the championships as you never know what can happen on the day.

Ladies Novice Championship

O

n Wednesday 21/11/12 we played the Ladies Novice Championship and it attracted four newly converted lady bowlers to participate.

The final saw Pam Coles play off against Jan Siney. The game started with Jan forging ahead to a 6-3 lead before Pam was able to come back to win with Jan scoring on just one more end. Well done Pam! The Plate was contested between Sue Moss and Carole Ford this turned out to be a very tightly contested game. Sue got out to an early lead and was 13-6 up before we saw Carole start to claw her way back into the game. However Sue kept her cool and went on to win.

Congratulations to all the Novices for a great effort and we look forward to following your progress into the future.

Sorrento Masters Singles 2012

W

e have again run the above event, which has been going for more than 50 years, and this year was successful, mainly due to the assistance of all of our members that undertook marking duties. To those members that did take part, I thank them, and trust that they saw some very good bowls, and that the stress was not too much.

Six of our own members took part this year, namely Rick Hutchinson, Bruce Eagles and Ian Linford, all of whom played on the first day, as well as Tiger Hogan, Ron Kuziela and Jem Shorland who played on the second day. Bruce Eagles, Ian Linford and Ron Kuziela all made it through to the second round, with Bruce getting into the last sixteen, and then being beaten by Trystan Smallacombe, a current first division and state player. Well done Bruce in your first attempt in this event, and maybe next year he will be able to go that bit further.

In all we had seventy starters in the event, which is about normal, but after allowing for another ten that could not play because of work commitments, as finals fall on a weekday, interest was good. Those that did play represented the cream of bowlers within the game in this state, and some of the games were very good to watch, and anyone that did look on would have seen some very good drawing and running bowls. All players advised that our greens were as good as they have been for many years.

The final this year was fought out by two country bowlers, with Len Mazga from Busselton and Brian Calthorpe from Cunderdin. Len won his quarter final which was 17

played against Rhett Butler, after being down 13 to 24. He then won the next eight ends, to win what was a very closely contested game. Rhett is a first division skipper from Victoria Park/Carlisle. The final was also closely contested, with Len running out winner by 25/20. He was very excited to have won, as he does not play pennants in Busselton, but is obviously a very good player.

Also to the ladies in the kitchen, who made numerous sandwiches and rolls, as well as providing scones with morning teas, I give my thanks. Without them, the atmosphere would not be as convivial, and I know that players and spectators alike enjoyed their eats, as well as enjoying the bar service.

Croquet Report

O

ur Christmas Luncheon and Trophy presentation held at the club this year was a huge success, with members being more connected to each other and being able to talk freely with each other and had the true unity of a club. Members and their partners/guests were well fed and looked after by Joan and her helpers.

The Christmas theme was well and truly set, with the handmade table Christmas decorations and a table quiz by Pat Hobson, entertained by Peter Hamilton with his paper tricks and Mary Gardner going around with her Santa basket. There were many raffles, all donated by members and past members, with some of us winning many times and re donating back for other members to have a win.

Throughout the year, various tournaments were held. We have some outstanding players and for all the doubles competitions they were paired up with a new player to make the playing field fair. This proved a huge success in giving the newer members confidence in “Having a Go”. The Netherclift Trophy for the most improved Player went to Marion Smith. The Braybrook Trophy for the person who contributed most to the club throughout the year went to Judith Skeet.

Congratulations go to our first ever Pennants team, who entered into the inaugural WA Croquet Club Pennants. Our team won all games in their division.

A 2013 calendar has been prepared and is up on our notice board. Please check and make a date in your diary.

• Safeway Security Sponsored Golf Challenge day. This was well attended last year and hopefully we will have many members again this year.

• Club Tournaments are being spread out this year and will be played on a Saturday over a few months. We encourage members to participate in these tournaments.

• We plan to host two visiting clubs this year. More details on this will follow, when we have had confirmation from the clubs.

• There are nine special birthdays to celebrate this year. So a busy year ahead.

Thanks to Peter Hamilton for clarifying the law and eliminating the confusion about the ‘Double Tap’ fault. It means that your mallet has hit the ball twice - because of a rebound effect. You may or may not hear two distinct sounds but if your ball travels almost as far as the other ball (in basically the same direction), it can only have done that because you hit it twice! If the balls are close together you should hit at an angle (say 45 degrees or even more) then your ball cannot rebound onto your mallet.

If the balls are actually touching, there can be no double tap! So you can send both balls off, hitting in whatever direction you please. However you should obtain agreement that the balls are touching, so that there is no argument.

Well done Tony Fowke

C

ongratulations go to Tony Fowke on being awarded the prestigious McCusker Charitable Foundation Award for excellence in WA’s mental health sector. This is one of many awards and achievements that Tony has received.

In November Tony was recognised in the 2012 National Volunteer Awards for Stirling. The above photo of him being presented with the Senior’s National Volunteer Award by local Stirling Member Michael Keenan MP (Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection). In October Tony also received the Sonshine FM Award for family and carer involvement and engagement.

Tony has been a mental health carer and advocate for more than 30 years. He is president of mental health carer group Arafmi WA and its national body. He is also the immediate past president, of the World Federation of Mental Health and first carer and Australian to hold this position. A retired Lawyer, Tony sits on organisations including the Mental Health Review Board in Perth and provides pro bono advice on mental health issues; he was also made a member of the Order of Australia in 2003.

Tony says that like any illness, mental illness is unexpected and can affect anyone at anytime, and whilst it can be difficult to come to terms with, as a society, we need to grow up and get over the myth that mental illness is something to be ashamed of.

With increased knowledge comes acceptance.

Tony has been a member of the Sorrento Croquet Club for many years, was Club President/Captain for one year and is currently our Club Delegate.

Oops! What a sight!

I

would like to thank all the people who helped me when I tripped and fell while serving sandwiches at the wake. Did I feel a fool, flat out on the carpet with a sandwich stuck to my knee. The women at the table near the door must have thought I was the entertainment for the day. Apart from my dignity, all is well; a few stiff joints but all’s fine. Thanks to Margaret Cooper and the rest of her crew, the wake for Des Bennett went off very well. Everyone worked really hard to make it a success.

What a great sight greeted everyone who came into the club for the Gala Day. A great deal of effort, time and energy must have been put in by a lot of the ladies to make the place looks so great. Thank you all.

Men’s Selection Review

W

e are now at the half way mark of the season and for Thursday’s, six out of nine teams are in the top half, but the Saturday’s teams are not so good. Our two seconds and third division are near the bottom. 2 Gold has improved since the players were moved around and has picked up 21 out of a possible 24 points on the last three rounds and are only eight points off a play-off position, so things are looking up.

We were saddened to hear the passing of our Chairman Des Bennett. Even though Des wasn’t able to play since the season started, he often came up on a Saturday for an hour or so and had a beer and watched, and passed on who he thought played well and who didn’t play well. He will be sadly missed and a big loss to the club. The selectors pass on their condolences to his wife Margaret.

Ladies Selection Review

A

fter 11 weeks of Tuesday Pennant we can say that the season to date has been relatively successful. Premier are in 10th position but are only 5.5 points out of 7th place. Another win like this week would see them climb the ladder. They have won against teams such as Manning at Manning, Leeming ,Safety Bay and Melville at Melville so they are showing they have the potential to hold a position in this division.

Division 1 Green North are equal 3rd and playing very well, keep it up girls hopefully playing off in the finals. Division 2 Red slipped from 2nd position to 5th after an unfortunate loss to Wanneroo but there is very little in points difference in top 5 and am sure they will bounce back and finish near the top again.

Division 3 White are holding 3rd spot 1 point behind 2nd place Doubleview, so a great effort here girls. Division 4 Red are sitting in 5th position and very little difference in points with teams above them on the ladder, well done girls. Division 4 Orange are also holding 5th position in this division and there is not a lot between them and top position.

On Saturday, Division 1 Red after 8 games are in 8th spot, but once again there is very little in points difference between 3rd and 8th position, so a couple of wins will see them climb up the ladder. Our Division 3 Purple were in 5th position, but after their terrific win against top side Yanchep this should see them move up the ladder.

New Skip Eleanor Adams has been doing very well with her team, go Eleanor.

Congratulations to all our players, whether you are playing premier or 4th Division you are all champions and doing well for Sorrento Bowling Club.

On a sour note we are still having problems with absenteeism. This does put pressure on our Divisions to perform each week as Ladies need to be found to fill in for missing players. Sometimes this means splitting teams that have been working well together, but we are left with little choice. As a committee we can only select on players who are available – Jan Cook

Calling the Umpire

I

n this newsletter I would like to cover the points you should remember when calling for the umpire.

• The umpire should only be called when both teams or opponents in singles have agreed to seek the umpire’s ruling on a measurement or law.

• Only the skippers or players in singles can call the umpire for a ruling on the laws of the game. If a member of a team believes that the laws have been breached, they should refer the matter to their skipper who should attempt to resolve it with the opposing skipper. If the skippers cannot agree they should call the umpire.

• When calling the umpire for a bowls measurement, give an indication of the distance involved so that the umpire can select and bring with them the appropriate measuring equipment.

• All non-involved bowls should be removed from the head to give the umpire a clear view and space to work.

• Advise the umpire of exactly what requires measuring.

• All players should stand well clear, preferably on the bank, while the umpire measures, except when asked by the umpire to assist.

• Every effort should be made to resolve measurement and law issues before calling the umpire, particularly when ‘playing’ umpires are involved, such as in Pennants.

For example, players can use the umpire’s long tape to measure the correct length of the jack (but not any other of the umpire’s equipment).

• For all measurements, the umpire’s decision is final and should not be questioned or commented on.

• For umpire’s decisions relating to the meaning or interpretation of any Law, there is a right of appeal to Bowls WA through the Controlling Body, by the skip of either team, the manager of either side or either player in a singles game. If the player disagrees with the umpire’s decision he/she may seek clarification of the applicable Law(s) with the umpire, but under no circumstances should they argue or protest the decision at that time. The player, however, has the right to lodge an appeal against the umpire’s decision through the Controlling Body after the match, in which case he/she should advise the umpire and pay a deposit (currently $50).

Remember that the umpire is not there as a policeman but is there to assist all players to enjoy their game by ensuring that all aspects of play are in line with the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. Umpires are players as well and volunteer their time and effort to assist in the smooth running and enjoyment of the game. There are occasions where particular situations are not fully covered by the Laws and Rules of the game and the umpire has to make an interpretation and decision based on common sense and a spirit of fair play. Always show consideration and respect for the umpire’s decisions.

When an umpire is called, he/she no longer represents or acts for the Club they belong to, but is representing and acting for the Controlling Body (e.g. Bowls WA for Pennants).

Charlie Beggs– Now a Life Member

harlie was born in Scotland in 1941. Moving to Perth, Charlie has had quite a few jobs including lighting manager for Phillips Australia. Charlie has been married to Maxine for 50 years. Charlie has been a member of the Sorrento Bowling Club since 1984. For the past 25 years he has committed many hours of his time in the clubhouse and on the greens. Charlie became a stalwart behind the bar mostly on Saturdays and Sundays and he has been club maintenance man on numerous occasions, Charlie has won a triples club championship and has played over 400 pennant games for the club. He has been a member of the Social committee, the Greens committee, and of course Bar committee. Charlie has also been a member of the Sorrento Darts club for 16 years. Life membership is an honour; Charlie Beggs deserves such an honour. Congratulations to Charlie Beggs on his Life Membership of the Sorrento Bowling Club.

4. A tortoise doesn’t run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.

And you’re telling me to exercise?? I don’t think so. I’m retired. Go around me.

Tribute to Des Bennett

D

es Bennett sadly passed away on Friday January 4th after a short stay in hospital.

The Sorrento Bowling Club is greatly indebted to Des for his many years of service.

As I mentioned at Des’ funeral, we all knew that when something needed to be done, Des was the man to ask to do it; no matter how busy he was.

Des served as our Treasurer for eleven years from 1993/4 and also for a similar period as Treasurer of the Dart Club.

He also served in other capacities including Selector and was instrumental in establishing our very successful Community Bowls programme.

He would take tasks on willingly and complete them to perfection. He was completely unselfish and so generous with his time – always putting others before himself.

Des was a natural leader who would inspire others; a willing teacher and mentor; skilful negotiator; and a role model for so many people. He was an extremely talented person; an accomplished dart player and lawn bowler over many years, playing at the highest levels; determined in his quite way; dedicated and focused on doing the job and doing it right.

A true gentleman, Des was very principled and displayed immense integrity. He was always respectful and polite, happy and charming and concerned about the welfare of others. I never heard Des say a bad word about anyone, and as a bowls selector that requires some doing.

I fondly remember the many times that Des would come up to me in the Club, firmly but gently grab my forearm, and say “now Lukey, listen to this” – followed by an insightful piece of advice. Des dealt in solutions, not problems.

Des’ services to the Club were recognised with a Life Membership of the Bowling Club in 2003 and Life Membership of the Dart Club in 2008. Des also has E-Green named in his honour.

Des Bennett will live on in our hearts and minds forever with his legacy engrained into the very fabric of our Club. Our deepest sympathy to Des’ wife Margaret; his daughter Karen; and son-in-law Nigel.

Some More “Hot Hints from Heardie”

T

he recommended delivery technique is a pendulum action of the arm with an even and continuous forward-movement. There should always be an easy relaxed rhythm in the delivery with the palm of the hand following the bowl in a natural follow through.

The eyes should be fixed on the aiming point at a convenient distance along the aiming-line, with anchor leg moving forward to stepping leg and watch bowl or jack move down the aiming line at least 5 or 6 metres or until your bowl comes to rest.

Some errors in width and length are caused by: Width • Stepping wide or narrow of delivery line.

• Changing the position of the feet on the mat for each delivery.

• Dropping the delivery arm shoulder during the delivery action.

• Not fixing eyes on the aiming point along aiming line.

• Turning hand over in the delivery or follow through Length • Changing the length of step for each delivery.

• Changing the speed of the pendulum swing.

• Changing the height of the backswing.

• Stepping too late or too soon.

• Changing the starting height of the delivery arm each delivery.

Concentration

T

here has been considerable chatter around the greens about Skippers actions and comments during a game. The question is, “how much dialogue is required, with whom and when” to successfully complete a game of bowls?

The etiquette of the game of bowls is a combination of good manners, sportsmanship and sociability.

Some Skippers say very little apart from when the head changes and a Second or Third is required to alter their approach or acknowledgement of a good shot by a player at the time or as they pass during the change over.

Other Skips chatter all day! Being made Skipper does not mean you have to talk all day. Whilst “Skippers are at all times during the game in control of the players”, it can be quite off-putting when that control is misdirected by too much talk.

From a lead’s point of view their main aim is to “draw close bowls”, therefore there is little need for comment in this regard. What words would induce a lead to get closer, moreover talking can interfere with concentration.

All Pennant bowlers would know when their bowl is wide and by how much and whether it is short or long of the Jack, so it becomes very annoying and indeed a dent to ones concentration, when one has already figured out the adjustment for the next bowl to be advised to “take more grass”. An indication by hand is generally sufficient to indicate the distance of your bowl from the Jack or the position required by the Skipper, instead of “take off a metre” or “add a metre”. Generally the bowler over compensates.

In conclusion please remember that constant chatter from the Skipper will often annoy their team thereby hindering the players` concentration. “The game is meant to be enjoyed, not endured”. Skippers should “always show positive body language and be positive when things are not going well”.

Successful bowls in the main are executed when maximum concentration is applied.

Marie Smart and Queen Elizabeth

I

n 2007, Marie received the Rotary’s Humanitarian Award for “Service Above Self” and that seems to have been her lifelong credo at home and abroad. Marie’s service abroad started years ago as a missionary in China where she worked with street kids for 15 years.

Marie also spent time at the government run Chiang Mai Orphanage in Thailand where she and one other woman cared for 68 babies. An orphanage in Cambodia sponsored by the William J. Clinton Foundation has also been fortunate to have Marie’s assistance as she helped care for 128 children affected by HIV. For many years Marie was heavily involved with WA Camp Quality activities designed to support and help children with cancer and their families cope with such serious circumstances. In between raising her own family and volunteering at home and overseas, Marie also found time to give her services in various capacities to the Ocean Reef Lion’s Club, the Hopman Cup and the Perth Zoo Dosent Association Because of her earlier Humanitarian Award, Marie was chosen as one of the 12 volunteers to attend CHOGM as special guests in 2011. It was during events at CHOGM that she held the door open for Queen Elizabeth, had supper with Julia Gillard and received an armband from Guy Sebastian!

Service with a Smile

W

hile on holidays over New Year I played a game of drawn pairs at Dunsborough District Country Club. In general “visitor” talk during the afternoon, I had let it be known that I was staying at Mandalay Caravan Park in Busselton.

My partner and I won the first of two rounds comfortably, but the second round only narrowly. I had to leave the club immediately after the second round, so I jokingly said to my partner that “he could keep any winnings” we may have collected. To my surprise the following day, a visitor turned up at our tent site in Busselton, with a meat pack I had won. Now that’s what I call service!

So if anyone is visiting Dunsborough, I would highly recommend contacting them for a social game of bowls.

pologies for the typographical errors in the December 2012 newsletter. Denise and I still try to check the spelling of members and guests names but, unfortunately, we don’t always get it right. We managed to call Bruce Eagles “Brian Eagles”. We also managed to get the possessive comma in the wrong place. (We had Eagle’s instead of Eagles’.

There were also errors in some of the captions where we misspelt Councillor Russ Fishwick’s name. This is unforgivable as we had actually received the correct spelling from Dick Currie. As Denise points out at least we know some members are actually reading our newsletter!

We also got a complaint about the lack of a “Contents page” in the December edition.

We were short of a page so this got sacrificed. It will be back in future editions We also had a complaint about the shaggy dog story “ The Hills are Alive”. The complainant wondered whether the writer was on drugs!

Apparently some of our ladies were “disturbed” by the photo in the December 2012 newsletter of Kelly Bradshaw wearing a Sorrento Bowling shirt whilst serving drinks.

I guess this misdemeanour rates alongside the starving masses in Somalia.

Did you hear that ex member Derry Barber got hit on the leg by a wayward drive? He was out of action for nine weeks after his operation. He advises bowlers to get off the green when they see a Skipper winding up for a full blooded drive. This is also why bowlers are not allowed to sit on the edge of the green. Not only are they at risk of being hit by a kitty or a bowl they are also damaging the edge of the green.

Did you hear that our genteel sport of lawn bowls has been issued with a 17 month ultimatum: abolish same sex competitions or run the risk of falling foul of the Australian Equal Opportunity Act and the Human Rights Commission.

Did you hear that one of our 1st Division Lady Skips (who shall remain nameless) arrived at bowls to play a top team from Mosman Park only to find on opening her bowls bag that she had her husband’s bowls? Apparently she managed to play well with Tony’s bowls!

Dorothy Dix, our Agony Aunt gives advice Dear Dorothy Dix, The age of the average Sorrento Bowling Club Write to member is approaching 70. I am about the Dorothy Dix average age. Like most male bowlers, I have if you have any a wife and children who I love and care about.

I also have three great sons-in-law, and the problems best set of grand-children in Australia! I try to find time to share with them and my other interests, which include gardening, Joondalup Men’s Shed, decent coffee, whisky, “The Australian” newspaper, televised sport, the Sorrento Bowling Club, and - until recently - a great bunch of fellow Rotarians. I have played and loved my bowls for thirty-eight years, but choose not to devote my time to one all-consuming interest.

WABA and many Perth bowling clubs appear to believe that bowls is the main reason we exist. Each year, pennant bowls is scheduled on Saturdays for 20 days, and Thursdays also for 20 days, and this year a pennant round was scheduled and played on December 21st, disrupting holiday plans for many.

State title events for singles, pairs, and fours require participants to commit themselves to play for up to 9 days during the summer school holidays. Our Club events organizers choose to allocate 12 Sundays to arrive at respective

Club Champions in singles, pairs, triples, and fours. These champions are only found from amongst bowlers who are prepared to play to their schedule and forego all other interests. I understand that pennant bowls plays a far less intrusive part in the lives of NSW bowlers, and that more bowls tournaments are scheduled. They do not have to make the heavy 20-day commitment to play in pennant competitions as expected by WABA and the WA Clubs.

Now for my questions: 1. What could be done for pennant bowls to reduce player commitment?

2. Many decisions of both WABA and SBC appear to be decided by officials who take the view, “Oh, we’ve always done it that way!” What would you do?

3. Why are three days allocated to each of the four major men’s Championship events requiring entrants to commit up to 12 of their Sundays to bowls, and how could these events be improved?

4. Will any of your suggested improvements to Club Championships events ever be introduced?

5. Will the Club pillory me for my letter to you?

– Jem Shorland Dear Jem, 1. Leave Divisions One Red and One White with ten teams in each of divisions, but reduce the number of teams in the lower divisions to eight. This would reduce the commitment to pennant for the average bowler to 14 games, plus finals. Promotions and demotions could be decided as per usual. Pennant games could then be scheduled so as to allow the less competitive bowler to arrange for more time with family members when free of work and school commitments over the Christmas and holiday breaks. This would also allow bowlers seeking State honours plenty of top level competition.

2. I would have them think outside the square.

3. Perhaps those who make these decisions simply refuse to see the advantages of amending some of the regimented practices currently plaguing the SBC? “Plates” are not attached to any major Club event in any other State. They diminish Club Championship events, and are included to ensure each entrant gets to play two games on day one in any CC event he/she enters. First round losers should be encouraged to enter a social competition, should they choose to do so, rather than be committed to give more of their time to continue in a non-event.

And surely the same argument for a plate could be generated again for third round losers on day two so as to ensure a second game for them? Where would it all end? We could end with up to four “plates” for every event!

Bowlers should be encouraged to enjoy more quality family time along with pennant bowls and Club events, and there would also be more entrants in each

event. Club Championships would be raised above the level of social bowls, and would regain the status they deserve as blue ribbon events. At Wimbledon and in State Bowls title events, when you lose - you’re out!

In most other States singles, pairs, and fours are major events. Triples are not so highly regarded. There is a draw for both singles and pairs events, but only the semi-finals and finals are scheduled to be played on specific days, and not necessarily on a Sunday. The playing of all but the last two rounds is left to the entrants who abide by the draw and conduct their games within scheduled time frames so as to complete the event by specified dates. Handicap events could also be introduced on similar lines to cater for those with competitive edges.

The benefits to players and the Club are many. Games could be arranged at times to suit both parties, be it in the late afternoon or on weekends, including on mornings before Saturday pennant. The Club would benefit from increased bar trade, and bowlers would get their Sundays back. Bowlers could then decide whether to spend it with their families, or return to the green to play organised social bowls.

Joe Stow Memorial Day

C

hris Tibbits welcomed all the bowlers to the Joe Stow Memorial. For the benefit of newer members he read out a tribute written by Stan McCullagh:

“Joe and Barbara Stow joined our club in 1995 and ran the social bowls every Friday and Sunday (weather permitting) for about ten years until Joe died six years ago. John Forkin, Barbara and I had a discussion and decided that in memory of Joe we would have a special day every year to remember Joe and seeing how he died we would have a charity day for the Heart Foundation.

John kindly donated this trophy which we see here today. When Joe played bowls he made it a very social affair with lots of fun and laughter on the greens. His favourite saying, if his bowl didn’t go where he wanted it to, was ‘Bloody Norah’. When we heard ‘Bloody Norah’ across the greens we knew he was having a bad day! He had a nickname for most people. Herbie was ‘My Son’, Marj Clark was ‘Mother’, Joy Hennessy was ‘Mrs. Have a Chat’, Marie Smart was ‘Maxwell Smart’, Gordon Kirkham was ‘Flash Gordon’ and there were many others as well. On Friday nights he would like to go home at 7.15pm as he liked to go to bed and read at 7.30pm. So as Fat Cat on Channel 7 went to bed about 7.30pm Joe became known as ‘Fat Cat’. So in memory of ‘Fat Cat’ lets go out and have a fun game today – Bloody Norah!!!

Winners for 2012 were Annie Taylor, John Warner and Derek Smith. Runners up were Brenda Richardson, Harold Jahn and Jan Paneperis. Well done! $509 was raised for the Heart Foundation through the raffle and a portion of the green fees. Well done to all!

Ladies Delegates Report Bowls WA • Contrary to rumours the use of chalk to mark touchers in Pennant games remains acceptable practice. The spray is mandatory for national and international events.

• Bowls Australia has discontinued the awarding of badges to those who successfully complete umpiring and coaching courses. Applicants will only

receive a card indicating successful completion of the programme.

• The Bowls WA Forum programmed for December has been rescheduled for April, date to be confirmed. Club members are asked to provide their representatives with any issues of concern which they wish to be taken to this Forum for discussion /resolution. The Ladies “Heat Rule” will certainly be on the Agenda!!!

• Following some problems the continued provision of bowls clothing by Kombat manufacturers is under review by Bowls Australia.

• Bowls WA has sent a circular to all Clubs regarding the dress policy. Particular concern has been expressed regarding headgear. If hats, caps, visors do not display the Bowls WA logo then a club hatband must be worn on the item.

• Beaumaris BC will be changing their name to Joondalup BC in 2013/14.

• The applications for use of bowling arms had increased considerably, likely as a result of the new “damage to greens (dumping) legislation”.

• “Lack of newspaper coverage for ladies” Pennants and events in general remains an area of concern. Ken Pride, C.E.O., will discuss the results process with the Sunday Times.

• At the Delegates meeting on 14th January there was much discussion and general concern about the inconsistencies relating to the interpretation and application by umpires of the rules covering extreme weather conditions (ladies).

The results from the Pennant games played on the 8th January covered forfeits, individual club abandonment, and the full 21 ends played, resulting in a diverse and inequitable allocation of points, which has the potential to distort ladder positions.

Several Clubs, including Sorrento, have submitted formal requests to the Chair, Bowls Management Committee and Chair, Umpires Committee Bowls WA for a review of the current rules.

Our new BBQ area

S

aturday 3rd December saw seventeen Club volunteers descend on the Club to demolish the old pergola; BBQs; and dig up the slabs and concrete surrounds.

The demolition was necessary to make way for a new $35000 facility, jointly funded between our Club and the City of Joondalup.

Arriving at 7am with jack hammers and all of the construction equipment necessary, the team performed admirably filling a six cubic metre skip bin to the very top. The task was completed in just over two hours.

At one stage wheel barrows filled with rubble were banking up at the skip bin while a team of people searched the bin franticly looking for Benny White’s wedding ring that had slipped off his finger while emptying rubble. Fortunately it proved not to be a needle in a haystack and the ring was found.
