irst of all I would like to wish all our readers a very happy Christmas and may 2018 be a great year.

Your Editors managed to call Barbara “Maureen” in one of the captions. John Sturk was also quick to point out that we had credited him with celebrating his sixtieth birthday when it was in fact his seventieth! We do try hard to make sure we get our facts right but these things still seem to slip through the system.

It also provides a positive option for people who have an injury as it is played in an upright position, using a mallet, at walking pace. It is easier on the body than sports which involve asymmetrical action or twisting the body, such as golf, bowls and tennis.

Did you know that volunteering is a health-enhancing behaviour, particularly among older people? There is evidence that older people benefit from volunteering because it can optimise wellbeing across the three domains of social, physical, and cognitive health. For example, it has been found that volunteering can prevent or reduce depression, and it has been associated with higher levels of self-rated health and lower mortality rates. Many studies have also found that volunteering gives older individuals a sense of meaning that enhances their quality of life. Please contact Ken Giles if you would like to help our Club.

Did you hear that John and Phillipa Collishaw had a lucky break a while back? Their grandson had a ninth birthday and at the same time John was playing bowls. John had a couple at the Club but as the party was one block away from home he grabbed a couple of full strength beers from the bar to have at the dinner party. Meanwhile Phillipa, who had gone directly to the party, after a couple of beers and a couple of Irish creams, also thought that around the corner wasn’t far to drive. Leaving the party she drove around the corner and straight into a breath test stop. She just got through and desperately tried to warn John who drove round the corner into the trap! Fortunately John also just got through thereby avoiding a situation where both the Collishaws and their cars were “D.I.U.” Did you know that Spider Webb is well known for finding interesting, unusual and very different items to share with others? He was on the East Coast doing what he does best i.e. keeping a “weather eye” open for interesting items and happened to be in a saddlery (horse supplies generally) and came across the answer to the scourge of WA bowlers i.e. the black plague - bush flies. Its quite obvious really, what/who else besides bowlers gets harassed by flies - horses. This concoction is in a very nice “roll on” bottle and is suitable for fillies and stallions especially those that attract flies. It comes in a very smart, discreet roll on tube which fits neatly into your bowls bag. It’s environmentally friendly, non toxic for delicate skins and has a lovely aroma of cedar and open forest. Just the thing for the smart horse about the racecourse, or in our case the well turned out bowler. While we don’t want to encourage a rush on supplies and overwhelm the purveyor of these fine goods, if you ask Spider or Brian Staples for more details you may be able to rid yourself of the pesky flies.

An’ Merry Christmas to ALL – from “Skew Wiff”

Did you see this interesting sentence and what is unusual about it?

“I do not know where family doctors acquired illegibly perplexing handwriting; nevertheless, extraordinary pharmaceutical intellectuality counterbalancing indecipherability transcendentalises intercommunication’s incomprehensibleness”.

Can you see why this is the most amazing sentence in English? Count the letters of each word! The first word has one letter, the second has two letters, the third and three letters and the twentieth word has 20 letters! This is known as a ‘rhopalic’ sentence was written by Dmitri Borgmann in 1965.

Did you hear that in the Mt. Lawley Split Fours competition the Kiwi team consisting of Chris Lander, Micky Martin, Ross Cunningham nicknamed their fourth member, Bruce Eagles, “Barnaby”. They named him after our Deputy Prime Minister so that he could be an honorary New Zealander for the duration of the competition.

Finally thanks to • Alan Rolls and Egon Mikolajczyk who arranged for a drone to photograph the 100 members who spelt out “ Sorrento” on one of the greens on Opening Day • Ian Lucas for making up metal slides above the bar to hold all our Awards. This will make it easy to add additional awards in the future as the awards can slide along so it is easy to add extra or to change the sequence • My friend Skew Wiff Watt who continues to write delightful poems on request.

President’s Report

A

nother year is ending, who can believe it. It has been an eventful year at the SBC. We, as the SBC, have experienced some highs and lows. We have • the most numbers of members in the Perth Metro area • the highest number of Pennant teams in the Perth Metro • one of the most financially sustainable bowling clubs in the Metro area • highest number of volunteers of any bowling club in the Metro area • the best sponsors/partners and • we are the envy of all bowling clubs in the Perth metro area

We have, unfortunately, lost a few of our members and friends. To all the families of these special people I hope this Christmas will be a day of remembering the joy and happiness that all these special people have bought to all their families and friends.

They will be missed.

We are a Club going forward and introducing new initiatives be it on the green or in the club house and I can see 2018 being an even better year for you the members.

I, on behalf of the Governing Council, wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year.

Captain’s Report

A

nother season has started and after round two of Pennants we are really doing well in just about all colours on Thursdays and Saturdays. Let’s keep it going right up to the Christmas break, then get real serious for the run home.

Congratulations to Shane Loftus for being part of the four that won the State Fours which was held at our Club. It’s the first time in our Club’s history that a male bowler has won a State title. Well done Shane. You have made our Club proud.

Speaking of the State Fours Final, a lot of people were thanked for their efforts to help run this event but two people did a lot of work and that was Shelley Gray and Ian Marshall. They both sold the sausage sizzle for most of the day. It’s people like this that makes our Club a success, my thanks to you both.

Alan Mcfayden, our green keeper, has been producing top greens for us to play on and it’s not very often a green keeper gets the thanks for what he is doing. The comments we received during the finals and even during Pennants has been nothing but first class. To you Alan and your staff, many thanks for the great effort.

The Melbourne Cup function at the Club was sold out and from the comments I heard, it was probably one of the best that has been held. A lot of thanks to Pauline Marsden and her many helpers, WELL DONE. I have some more of the Club polo shirts available in navy or royal blue. They have pockets and they are available behind the bar at $45 each. At this stage I only have various male sizes.

I would like to thank the Governing Council, led by our President John Abercrombie, Wayne Gray, Brian Lucas, Pat Dichiera and Pauline Marsden. I really appreciated everyone’s support while I was unwell.

Christmas and New Year is nearly upon us, so I would like to extend my wishes to all for a wonderful and safe festive period. And I hope you all enjoy Christmas and New Year with your families and friends but remember, we need you back, so keep safe.

Raffles Thanks to ticket sales of $1794, and a number of donated prizes, we made a profit of $1194 from the Opening Day Partner’s Raffle. Another major raffle is planned for the two weeks prior to Christmas.

Men’s Pennant Report

O

ur Club has had a very successful start to the season with many of our Midweek and Saturday teams featuring prominently towards the top of the table. With an influx of new players our Club now has more depth and this has been reflected in our results. It has been pleasing to see Peter Balcombe, Frank Tyson and Craig Grisbrook being promoted to our top side and performing well.

Umpires’ Corner Pennants - Late Appearance and Insufficient Players A couple of situations have arisen in the first few rounds of Pennants relating to late appearance of players and what constitutes sufficient players before a forfeit is awarded.

Bowls WA Pennant competition rules state that where a player or players are late, 30 minutes waiting time is allowed beyond the scheduled starting time. If, at the end of 30 minutes and there are no extenuating circumstances (e.g., major traffic delay), and a player (or substitute) is not present, play should commence on a four versus three basis, i.e. with the missing position being the second and their team bowling six bowls against the opposition’s eight.

In the case of extenuating circumstances, the Umpire of the Day may allow additional time. If, at the end of 30 minutes and there are no extenuating circumstances, a side or sufficient players are not present, the opposing side will be awarded a forfeit. Sufficient players requires a minimum of 3 players in each team of the side.

An absent player (or substitute) who arrives at any time after the game has started must take his original nominated position in the team after the end currently being played has been completed.

Test your knowledge of the Laws - Answers are on page 62 Q.1 – A bowl comes to rest near the jack and then falls over and touches the jack whilst the next bowl is on its course to the head. Is the first bowl a toucher?

Q.2 – When light rain began to fall, the players of one team left the green to take shelter without seeking the consent of their opponents who wanted to continue playing. What is the position?

Q.3 – As a widely delivered bowl re-enters its own rink it contacts a bowl just outside the boundary line which had been declared dead but not removed, and as a result both bowls come to rest in their own rink. What is the position with regards to each bowl?

Croquet Corner News Master and Apprentices Fun Day This fun competition is organised to encourage new members to enter competitions 17

as the partners of more experienced players. The day this year was held in August, attracting ten entrants who thoroughly enjoyed the games followed by pizzas and drinks giving the event both a social and sporting atmosphere.

Golf Croquet Club Championships This annual competition was played on 9 September with six entrants and was won by Terry Harvey, who once again showed that practice makes perfect. When he had a bye (break between games) he was on the small court still practising – maybe we should all take a leaf out of his book. Frank Coleman, a relatively new player, amazed us all by being runner-up. Congratulations Frank! Frank is an accomplished golf player, which obviously gave him a distinct advantage. We should hear a lot more of Frank in future croquet competitions.

Special thanks to Trish Klemp who was up nice and early on the day to treat us with her fresh home made scones. Trish is becoming quite famous for these scones which she generously provides on all special occasions. The Tournament was managed by Kerry. Scores for all competitions held at Sorrento can now be found on the website https://croquetscores.com Opening Day The 2017/18 Bowling and Croquet seasons were officially opened on Sunday 17 September. The Croquet section was well represented with a third of their members participating in the day. The formal speeches and “opening ceremony” were followed by a most enjoyable luncheon and after-lunch games in both sports.

A $10 Sorrento drink voucher was awarded to the player who took the most hoops during the day; and another one went to the player who excelled in their shots. Terry Harvey won the first voucher by scoring 17 hoops; with the second one being won by a new member, Janet Fuller. Janet played three outstanding shots during the afternoon by: 1. Successfully promoting her partner’s ball to a hoop-running position for the following hoop to be won.

2. Running a hoop in a single shot from a previous hoop.

3. Playing her ball into the jaws of the next hoop from a previous hoop.

Janet is another future force to be reckoned with – and is a close neighbour of Frank Coleman – maybe there is something in the water in Woodvale?

Halls Head Spring Carnival The long weekend in September saw three players from Sorrento, dressed to impress in their new club shirts, travel down to Mandurah to compete in this Carnival. Comments 18

from other clubs on how much they liked our new shirts were an encouraging start to the weekend. As Saturday was devoted to Association Croquet, which is not yet played at Sorrento, we joined the Carnival on the Sunday with Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles; and Monday saw us in the Ricochet Handicap Doubles.

Frank Coleman, a relatively new member, played his first competition representing Sorrento in the Golf Croquet tournament, partnered by Kerry Bomford. The weekend was very wet and windy making the greens very heavy to play on - especially as they had recently been top-dressed in preparation for the Carnival. Full wet weather gear was required for Sunday and some of Monday.

Kerry Bomford and Di McGivern were required to play five games of 90 minutes each and with the energy required to hit the ball down to the far side of the greens resulted in some very weary travellers being driven home on Monday evening. All the Sorrento players appreciated the support of their “Cheer Squad” and “Chauffeurs” in the forms of Frank Bomford and Rosemary Coleman – thank you to you both!

Sorrento has a representative at Croquetwest At the Croquetwest AGM held in September, Di McGivern was nominated and elected to the position of Vice-President of Croquetwest for a two year term. The appointment will bring additional recognition to Sorrento Club at a State level, and give our Club the ability to contribute and influence decisions taken by the governing group.

Club Championships Ricochet Singles Six players entered this event on Friday 6 October and once again Terry Harvey showed of his skills and is Club Champion in the Ricochet Singles. Judith Skeet was runner up. Well done to them both.

Sorrento player wins a State title Sorrento club hosted the Croquetwest Ricochet State Singles held the over the weekend of 7 and 8 October. Although usually scheduled as a one day tournament, ours needed to be held over three days due to us having only one full sized court. The six entrants were from Como, Nedlands and Sorrento Croquet Clubs with each entrant playing every other one. We congratulate Terry Harvey on winning this year’s title and Sandy Boon from Nedlands for being runner-up. This form of the game used to be Sorrento’s main game and had a reputation for being very good at it. These days Golf Croquet and Association Croquet are more popular. Even although Sorrento is no longer a strong Ricochet club, we thank former members, Gwen and Derek Freeman, for entering the competition and for making the following comments: “Although we find singles very tiring (they are both 85 years of age), we entered in 19

memory of the late Geoff Bloomfield, who was Sorrento’s one and only croquet Life Member - being honoured for starting the croquet section - irrespective of whether it was to play Golf, Association or Ricochet Croquet.”

Gwen also commented on the social atmosphere and the friendships they had made through these events. They did not want to see the Ricochet Competition events abandoned in the future.

Di McGivern was approved by Croquetwest to referee the tournament, although she is officially a referee only for Golf Croquet, but plays Ricochet at the club from time to time. Her participation in the Ricochet Spring Carnival held at Halls Head together with lots of studying the “Rules of Ricochet” enabled her to fulfil the refereeing requirements for this Tournament. A big thank you goes to Di for taking on this duty, which includes ensuring that the court is properly set up for the tournament. Thanks to Terry for his assistance with the court set-up, requiring measuring and marking critical points on the boundary lines, checking hoop placements, heights and firmness; and generally ensuring that the court is in good playing condition. We again thank our Greenkeepers for their preparation of the court enabling us to offer our facilities to host tournaments at this level.

Kerry, as well as playing in the competition, was Tournament Manager. She also encouraged members to support the day by bringing morning and afternoon teas, setting up the tables for tea/coffee service, preparing snacks for the post-game gathering, and cleaning up at the of the end of the day. The day was well supported by a number of members who came to give support and encouragement to the players. A big “Thank You” to all those who helped to make the day so successful.

Croquet Social Event On Friday 13 October a number of croquet players and their partners, family, friends, and past members got together for lunch at the Kingsley Tavern. The group occupied two large tables and the event provided a great opportunity for members to meet members’ guests as well as to meet each other in a social setting.

Corporate Croquet On Saturday 14 October, the croquet facilities were hired by Bankwest to enjoy a social game of “barefoot croquet”. Kerry, Terry Harvey and Janet Fuller were on hand to welcome the visitors to the Club and then Terry and Janet stayed with the visitors while Kerry and Di attended a function at Croquetwest. Club members were very cooperative by agreeing to play their games in the morning so that the visitors could use the courts in the afternoon. We hope to encourage more groups to come to play “corporate croquet” in the future.

Ladies’ Coaching Weekend Croquetwest received a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation and decided to use it to develop the croquet skills of its lady players. Five players from Sorrento registered for the course, held over the weekend of 21 and 22 October, but only four were ultimately able to attend. Our Club was recognised for having the highest percentage of players attend the course. The course comprised a two-day Coaching Clinic which, on Saturday, included: • An introductory talk by Sport Psychologist, Dr. Craig Harms.

• A session on the courts where some of the basics of croquet were demonstrated by Greg Fletcher, who, at 23, is one of Australia’s top players in both Association and Golf croquet. He went through the types of grip, the importance of the stalk, stance and swing, and mentioned ways to improve accuracy in play based on hand and/or eye dominance.

• The WA Referee Coordinator, John Doepel, refreshed the payers’ understanding of the rules with a focus on the topics of faults, offside rules, and wrong ball play.

• A demonstration of various croquet strokes used in Association Croquet, but applicable to Golf Croquet, and what can be achieved through these strokes (AC and GC).

• During a self-catered supper, players listened to a motivational talk given by Priya Cooper, a gold-medalist WA Paralympic swimmer, who represented Australia in three Games in 1992 (Barcelona), 1996 (Atlanta) and 2000 (Sydney).

Sunday was to be far more active with the program including: • A “warm-up” session held off the courts • A “warm-up” session on the courts • Demonstration and practice of jump shots • A series of game scenarios - testing players on the rules, basic tactics and recognising “triggers” within games.

• After lunch players competed in games – observed by coaches and players from the WA Squad.

Feedback from the weekend was generally positive, although some suggestions for improvements for future such clinics were made and appreciated by the organizers.

Melbourne Cup Lunch and Raffle The croquet section again held its annual raffle to provide funds to sponsor games with prizes, and hold fun days including a Pizza supper to finish, encouraging new members to join. The raffle has been very well supported by members and guests in donating items for the prizes and for buying tickets. A total of $1265 was raised.

Bowls Welfare Report Passing of Members It has been a sad couple of months with the passing of Max Gouldthorp, Graeme Heard and John Hatt. Graeme Heard’s and Max Gouldthorp’s funerals were well attended especially Graeme’s which would have been the largest attendance by Club members.

Graeme will be well missed, being a “Foundation Member”, “Life Member” and many years as a “Coach”. Well done Graeme. On behalf of all our members I send our deepest condolences to families and friends of these passed members.

Unwell Members • Stan McCullagh is still struggling with his breathing and is not playing bowls at present.

• May and Bill Leyland are doing OK although Bill is still having trouble with walking and is not sleeping well at night and has snoozes during the day.

• We were pleased to see Eric Tompkins watching Keith play bowls.

• Tony Sabatino’s hip replacement is taking a while to settle and he is looking forward to getting back on the green before Christmas.

• Our friend Glenn Boston is doing well.

• Alan Wood still has three more sessions of chemo to go and all is looking good at this stage.

• Judy Campbell has been in hospital with a chest problem. She said it something to do with Angina, but everything is going well.

• Denise Odell is still having knee problems and has not bowled for four months On behalf of all SBC members I wish you all the very best and hope you all get back to good health.

Back on the Greens It was great to see Noel Summers, Wendy Saul, John Farmer, Darryl Rowland, John Godfrey, Ron Rogers, Gavan Ebsworth and Brian Self back playing Pennants. Keep going fellas.

Match Committee Report Dash for Cash After the July Dash for Cash was abandoned due to wet weather, the fourth and last instalment of the 2017 SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS’ Dash(es) for Cash got under way under sunny skies on 26 August. Twenty teams of four men entered this 23

tournament, including over 30 visitors. The number of visitors underlines the popularity of this event which has been running with the support of SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS for several years now.

Once again the ladies, coordinated by Jan Cook, excelled themselves by providing morning tea and soup-and-a-roll lunch. Both were appreciated by all who were there.

Almost 50 litres of five different varieties of soup are prepared each tournament.

Thanks ladies.

The tournament consists of four matches of 11 ends each, and has prize money to reward overall, morning, afternoon and in Divisional round performances.

At the lunch break, only four teams had registered both wins, with another 3 teams registering a win and a draw. After filling our tummies we ventured back for the afternoon matches. At the conclusion of the afternoon matches there were only two teams with the maximum points, with Chris Lander’s rink (with Warren Elliott, Rob Tozer and Ross Cunningham) winning with the outstanding margin of 52 shots up.

This fantastic score relegated Bob Mulroy (with Dion Smith, Mick McCavana and Lindsay Baker) well back with a plus 19 margin. In third place with 3 ½ wins was Trevor Orton (with Neville Odell, Glen McCarthy and John Collishaw) and in fourth place the last team to enter – Peter Blake (with Russell Lockwood, Derry Ellis and Brad Williams). The morning round prize was taken out by Steve Murray’s Scarborough team, and the afternoon by Brian Gosney’s Quinns Rock team.

Round 1 winners Tim Murray’s rink (Pat Murray, Ron Stockton and Colin Jasper) would have to be the luckiest team on the day because, after eliminating all the teams mentioned above, their margin of plus 1 (10 shots to 9) was enough to steal the round prize from one other team with a plus 1 (11 shots to 10)! Other round prizes were taken out by:• Stan Van Mosseveld (Bob Jeffs, Kevin Cook and Mick Martin), • Jim Spencer (Graham May, Peter Balcombe and Barry Stewart) and • Alan Walton (Herbie Eisenmann, Peter Morgan and Kevin Coffey).

Balcatta Mowers Open Mixed Pairs Wednesday 20 September saw our final Open Mixed Pairs game for the season. Forty two members and guests took part, and a great day was had by all. A big thank you goes out to BALCATTA MOWERS for donating our prize money. We really appreciate our Partners’ donations and encourage members to utilise their services.

Winners for the day were Jan Paniperis and Pauline Marsden, well done girls. The second prize went to Neville Odell and Egon Mikolajczyk and the third prize to Tim Murray and Jim Ironside.

As usual we finished off our day with a delicious sausage sizzle with thanks to Keith Cooper, our chef of the day, bringing the event to a great end.

Helloworld Travel Balcatta Divorced Pairs Our annual Divorced Pairs was held on Wednesday 27 September. We had 30 teams taking part, and the event was sponsored

by Helloworld Travel Balcatta. Managing Director Rod Garnaut was present at the end of the event to hand out the prizes, and a big thank you goes out to him for his donation to our prize money. Anyone looking to book a holiday please think about visiting Helloworld Balcatta. They will do their utmost to get you the best deals.

We had a good day weather wise, and the event was a success with Ian Marshall and Lorraine Hyde, taking out the morning prize.

Afternoon winners were Shelley Jeffs and Spider Webb,. Overall winners of the event were Bruce Eagles and Coral Smith, and runners up were Russell Lockwood and Robyn Van Mosseveld.

Again thank you to Keith Cooper our resident chef for our customary sausage sizzle bringing a great end to the day.

Women’s 100 Up Our first women’s event of the new season the “100 UP” took place in October. We had 22 entries and the format played was a “Major/Plate Knockout”. The greens were in excellent condition, and the weather served us well during our games.

We had hoped that the quarter finals, semi finals, and the finals could all be played on 18 October as we had started early enough and the weather was perfect, but unfortunately we had to postpone the major final to the following week as one of the players did not feel well enough to go on. We did however go ahead with the finals of the Plate, and this was between Lee Leach and Coral Smith with Lee winning a closely contested game.

The major final was between Nerrida Porteous and Barbara Lorencs. The weather was lovely to begin with but we had to halt play briefly because of a heavy downpour. The blue sky returned and play was continued to see Barbara Lorencs taking the winning position. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the women who took part in this event.

Mixed Fours Sunday 8 October saw the first round of the Club’s Mixed Fours Championship. It was really disappointing to see only seven teams enter for this event. The event involved sectional play with three rounds of 15 ends for the teams in the section of four and obviously two rounds for the section of three, due to the odd number resulting in an alignment or bye round.

At the end of play on the first day, our two finalists were Brian Saul’s team and Juris Lorencs’s team. The final took place the following Sunday with an 18 end match. A few spectators came to watch the two teams displaying lots of good bowling, and after 17 ends both teams were tied on 16 all. After a really tight end Team Saul prevailed by two shots to win the game on the last end.

A very happy team consisting of Brian Saul, Nerrida Porteous, Coral Smith and John Smith, became the Mixed Four Winners for 2017.

Commiserations to the runners up Juris Lorencs, Brian Lucas, Barbara Lorencs, and Pauline Marsden they all played some excellent bowls.

As mentioned earlier this was a really disappointing entry list. Recent records indicate that we can normally expect around 50-60 bowlers for Club championships therefore this represents a reduction of more than 50%, which is very concerning. So come on Sorrento members and make an effort to come out and take part in your Club events .With more teams taking part it will be a better competition.

We would welcome feedback and/or suggestions from members on how we might increase the number of participants for future championships. There are other options such as handicapping or seeding, which have been used by other clubs, which may help increase numbers.

We would really like to have your comments in order that we can improve on the entries for our championship games in the coming events. Queen of Scroungers

T

he Queen of Scroungers was held on 22 September 2017 at Joondalup Bowling Club. Charmain Harris and I represented the Sorrento Bowling Club.

It started off as a very challenging day as the winds were blowing at 40 kph and gusting to 70 kph and the rain came in horizontally with a heaviness that I have not seen in Perth for years. Thinking that I was going to be restricted to a day of housework (yuk!!), I rang the Joondalup Club and was told that ‘come hell or high water the event was going ahead’.

With this good news, I put the vacuum cleaner away and then rang Charmain to let her know that the event was on. Charmain was at the time house-sitting in Ellenbrook and had a little bit more distance than I but off we went as a team with great curiosity 27

as to how the event was going to be played.

Upon arrival we were greeted with great enthusiasm from the Joondalup ladies as there had been many cancellations from quite a few clubs, particularly the south of the river clubs which was understandable given the driving conditions.

The morning tea that had been prepared was nothing short of what a Sorrento member would expect, home-made scones, biscuits and a delightful array of cakes. Then looking past, we noticed two indoor carpet bowling greens had been set out on the floor with special bowls for the game. It was priceless to feel the enthusiasm and to hear no negativity in relation to what these ladies had done from any of the competitors.

With only two greens to play on, those not playing were handed a quiz sheet and we united into small groups to complete the quiz. Then a break for lunch with two beautiful large bowls of soup with rolls and large plates of sandwiches which would match any local cafe.

The final came down to a foursome for the play-off and we all sat around united as a group of ladies from different clubs but most importantly a group of ladies having great fun, united on such a miserable day.

Thank you to Tim Martin and his lovely wife Michelle for organising Scroungers every Sunday at our Club and we look forward to the next year’s Scroungers.

An Arab and a Scotsman

A

n Arab Sheik was admitted to hospital for heart surgery. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn’t be found locally, so, the call went out around the world.

Finally a Scot was located who had the same rare blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman, as appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, diamonds and $100 000.

A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through a corrective surgery.

His doctor telephoned the Scotsman who was more than happy to donate his blood again.

After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card and a jar of candies. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab this time did not reciprocate his kind gesture as he had anticipated.

He phoned the Arab and asked him: “I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me a BMW, diamonds and money… but you only gave me a thank-you card and a jar of candies”. To this the Arab replied: “Aye laddie, but I now have Scottish blood in my veins”.

Australian Women’s Champion of Champions 2017

Hopefully, one day, Sorrento will have a facility like this!

his prestigious event captioned as “THE ULTIMATE TEST to decide the Nation’s most consistent singles player” was held at the Darwin Bowls Club in October.

The players were: Chloe Morrison (ACT), Beth Quinlan (NSW), Colleen Orr (NT), Cassandra Millerick (QLD), Cassandra Harvey (SA), Jess Wallace (VIC) and our Pauline Bourne representing WA. Unfortunately the lady from Tasmania had to withdraw.

I now write this on a personal level and completely without bias, I left that to the bowls.

Pauline was so pleased to be in Darwin to represent the Sorrento Bowling Club. I must say she was amazingly calm about the whole affair yet so proud of her achievements in getting this far.

We arrived five days before the event and a couple of hours after landing at the Top End were at the Darwin Bowls Club where she introduced herself and requested permission to roll-up. This was the beginning of an affair with members of the club, in particular the greenkeeper and NT representative, Colleen who was always on the greens honing her skills. Pauline and Colleen became quite close friends and were a bit pleased to find out they would play each other in the last game. It was jested that it would be great if that turned out to be the deciding game.

For the next four days, one morning and one evening practice session was completed

by Pauline using both outside and undercover greens. I must add that Darwin was decidedly an uncomfortable temperature to be engaging in even the slightest physical activity – 35 degrees in the daytime and a night temperatures of 25 degrees plus high humidity was a severe challenge. Anyhow, there was Pauline and often Colleen end after end, not finishing until she felt the session was performed to her satisfaction. I felt that this amazing dedication was providing a huge confidence boost for her.

Driving to the Club on the first day of the tournament Pauline commented that her only wish was to win at least one match. Somehow we both felt a slight glimmer of confidence. Due to the withdrawal of the Tasmania the Match Committee, in their wisdom, had decided the day before to play all seven games under cover and each woman had a bye.

Pauline’s first opponent was Beth Quinlan (NSW), who has a long list of experiences at both State and National levels. Beth also skipped a team in the fours at the Australian Open in 2015 where her team beat Pauline’s on the last end, last bowl of the semi final.

Pauline took control of the game on the first end and won 21-16. Wow! Her one match win achieved. Game 2 was against a young gun from the ACT. Pauline was in great touch and got away to a comfortable lead and after surviving a mini fight back ended up winning 21-10. She had a bye in the last session. At the end of the day she was in second place with the local player with three wins. She even made the NT paper’s sport section on the back of the local interest for Colleen’s success.

Day 2, “Team Bourne”, that’s Pauline plus her water boy/driver, thought another win would be a good result. Game 1 saw her up against young player, Jess from VIC whose young baby and family were in the crowd. No baby crying to distract her. With the game at 16-16 Jess played three amazing rescue shots on three ends where Pauline had bowls on the jack. Game over. 21-16 to VIC. No disappointment, Pauline played superbly.

Game 2 was against Cassandra (QLD) yet to win a game. Down five shots I called my 30

sons to tell them Mum’s game was being streamed on Facebook, Pauline thought this was not a good idea. The ditch rink got the better of Pauline and Cassandra turned in a faultless draw bowling game and won 21-3 with the streaming moving to another rink quite quickly. Day’s end Pauline and five others were equal with two wins each and Colleen (NT) with three wins.

On the final day it was possible that any of the seven bowlers could win. Game 1 saw Pauline play a young Cassandra (SA) who, like Pauline, did not have the best results on day 2. The game was always tight but Cassandra was playing some effective driving meaning Pauline often held shot but lost the end. Result a win for SA 21-12 so Cassandra could win. The NT leader also lost!

Scenario for final round: Only SA who played NSW, and NT who played WA could win. With Pauline playing outstanding bowls, a shell-shocked Colleen (NT) kept her eyes on the other game that mattered. Pauline won 21-6 and if Colleen had lost scoring 10 would still have won but her fears quickly came to an end as Cassandra (SA) lost 21-10 to NSW. The very popular and deserved local heroine, Colleen Orr, won winning four games and received her gold medallion, cup and invitation to wear the green and gold to represent Australia in next year’s World Champion of Champions event.

Pauline finished 4th on aggregate with five players with three wins. This was, in every respect, a competition played with wonderful spirit and all players experiencing the ups and downs of this fantastic game of competitive bowls we love to play. – Tony Bourne PS: I was rather occupied watching every women’s game so other than the regular smashing of bowls, lots of driving, I can’t report accurately on the men’s games. I do know that when the last round was to be played there were four players capable of winning, Jono Davis (NSW), Lee Schraner (TAS), Barry Lester (VIC) and Clive Adams (WA). Sadly Breeze Howard (ACT), who was also in contention, collapsed at the beginning of play, probably due to heat stress and didn’t take any further part.

Amazingly, on day one the TAS player lost his first game then failed to complete his second due to heat stress. He returned on day two then won the next four games and thereby became the Champion as the other three players all lost.

Farewell and Thank You Bill

O

ne of our hard working members, Bill Long, has left the Sorrento Bowling Club and moved up to Merriwa.

Over a period of nine years, Bill put a lot of time and effort into our Club. If just about anything needed to be done, all you had to do was call Bill.

Not long after he was here he refurbished both the front and rear offices. Along with Alan Wood, he devised the current system of putting up and pulling down the shade cloths on the greens. He repaired all the cane chairs on the patio, drilled all the holes in the brickwork that surround the greens and then attached the spikes to the bottom of the numbered, yellow buckets so that they could be placed in the holes.

The list is too long to mention everything that he achieved so thanks Bill, you have been a loyal servant of the Club and you will be sadly missed both as a friend and a volunteer worker.

Mandurah APL Cup 2017

T

his was the second year Sorrento was invited to this weekend tournament. Each team of four players had to have at least one female bowler and a nominated manager.

There were 32 teams playing in four sections with the eight teams playing each other once and the top two teams moving onto the quarterfinals.

Sorrento players were Kathy Gobbart, Pauline Bourne, Bruce Eagles and Patrick Murray; the writer got the Manager’s job.

There were many of the State’s best bowlers there too.

The format and rules of games are the same as in “Jack Attack”.

There were two five end sets with power plays and substitutions and three nominated players for each game. Each player played a minimum of four fixtures and a minimum of 12 bowls per game. (Enough of that, for full rules, list of teams and players please contact the writer.)

As with last year Sorrento qualified for the finals finishing on top of their section.

They won their first game 9-2, 7-6 but all the remaining were tied with Sorrento winning five of the six games in exciting tie-breakers. Well done team!

Their quarter final against the Henselite team was a quick affair with straight set wins to Henselite who went on to beat Osborne Park in the final. As a sponsor the winners will be unable to collect the prize of representing WA in the National play-offs.

As a person who watched every bowl, well just about, I must say that the players of “Team Sorrento” represented our Club with a wonderful display of sports personship and outstanding skill especially as the playing conditions were quite challenging.

An amazing two letter English word

D

id you know that there is one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition? This two-letter word has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is ‘UP.’ It’s easy to understand UP when we mean “toward the sky” but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are people UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

On the bowling green “You have to be UP when you are down”. You roll UP when you practise, when you come second you are a runner UP and 100 UP competitions are held. This may be called a f…. UP when you knock your opponent’s bowl in for shot.

With two ends to go you have an “UP and back”. We are told that Leads must shut UP and Thirds must measure UP. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

Tribute to Max Gouldthorp –1941-2017

T

able 13 has been a part of the rich history of the Sorrento Bowling Club since the early 1980s. Named after the infamous Bay 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Club, Sorrento’s Table 13 (located adjacent to the Chase the Joker board) is home to some of the Club’s great characters.

Over a few beers these learned gentlemen debate world affairs and events; history and geography; Australian politics; topical issues of the time; and of course, sport. They have opinions on anything and everything and will share them with anyone. Eventually the conversation swings to lawn bowls; bowls selection; and the bloody bowls selectors. Why would they do this or that? How could they leave this person in the top side, and so on it would go?

Max Gouldthorp became one of the power brokers at Table 13 in 1989 when he joined the Club after leaving the Wheatbelt town of Koorda and moving to Craigie. Sadly, Max passed away in September after a short but intense illness.

Max, the son of a station master and the eldest of three boys, was born in Merriden in 1941, before moving to Narrogin where he spent most of his childhood. One of his first jobs was in the wool stores in Fremantle. He learned wool classing and joined a shearing team as a roustabout travelling the State. Max married Mosman Park sweetheart Yvonne in 1961, subsequently getting out of the “big Smoke” and moving to Koorda with children Kym and Ken in 1967. He continued to shear and ran his own shearing team and celebrating the birth of third child Trina. Stories are that he effectively ran his team at times from a corner of the bar at the Koorda Bowling Club, where there was a phone (and a beer) handy. He started playing bowls in Koorda and became a most capable bowler and dart player at Sorrento.

Max was particularly proud of the significant role that he played in securing the Club’s first bowling “Club of the Year” award for the 1991/92 season.

He never did things by half. A staunch reader of the West Australian newspaper, he would read each edition from front to back, underlining and highlighting relevant parts of interest and making notes in the small notebook that he carried always. On occasions he was caught short with his contribution to a Table 13 debate because his newspaper research was a few days behind (“not enough hours in the day”).

A dedicated home brewer, Max was highly disturbed one morning to find that some of the Craigie locals had come uninvited over his back fence to visit his “Old Bustards Shed” and helped themselves to his precious stock.

Max gave away playing Pennants some years ago to concentrate on caravanning and seeing more of Australia. He remained a loyal member of the Club. His caravanning exploits initially provided amusement for Table 13 as numerous things went wrong, but Max soon proved to be a skilful and competent grey nomad as he and wife Von travelled the country. Max could recount every detail of where he had visited and who he saw along the way.

I remember our continual sparing competitions at Table 13. Max could give as good as he got and always with that wry sense of humour of his. His nickname was “Blinky” because he had an eye impediment that probably stemmed from his days as an amateur boxer. I suggested that it came about because of his fighting technique to weave instead of duck. Max received medical treatment and his eye problem improved – removing one of our sources of jest. Fortunately, along came the Dockers.

Max described himself as a “Freo boy”. Given his work with the Fremantle wool sheds, he saw himself as a kind of “walfie”. After following South Fremantle and became a vehement supporter of the Dockers. You know – “Eagles don’t have a home”. We countered with the Docker’s “empty trophy cabinet”.

When you think of Max you think of the wide expanses of the Australian bush, of paths less travelled, freedom, adventure, mates and family.

Max became ill on a caravanning trip across to Queensland to see more of the country that he loved and to visit his beloved family. He was flown back to Perth for treatment but unfortunately passed away a short time later. He now joins a more heavenly Table 13, sitting alongside old mates like Mike Smith, Pat Sweeney and Ron Neilsen and I am sure he will do everything possible to help the Dockers finally win a premiership.

My deepest condolences to Von and the family for our sad loss. Max was a remarkable mate and one who will be sorely missed. Table 13 will not be the same but will carry on in Max’s memory.

‘Touche’ – The Mechanic and the Cardiologist Lexus mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a LS460 when he spotted a well known cardiologist in his shop.

The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working.

The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. So how is it that I make $48 000 a year and you make $1 700 000, when you and I are doing basically the same work?”

The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic....... “Try doing it with the engine running.”

Sharon’s Spicy Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Soup

S

haron Eggers has kindly agreed to share her famous “Spicy Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Soup” recipe:

Ingredients: A mix of pumpkin/butternut, gold sweet potatoes and normal potatoes Ground chilli powder – as required Cream – quantity depends on quantity of soup, start with 125ml.

Milk – as required Salt and pepper (The amount of pumpkin, sweet potato and potato you need depends on the quantity of soup needed. I fill a large saucepan almost to the brim with the veges before boiling.

This vastly reduces after cooking and mashing, leaving room for cream and milk.)

Process: 1. Cut up roughly equal amounts of pumpkin and sweet potato and just a bit less normal potato and boil until soft.

2. Tip off excess water (amount depends on how thick you like the soup) and mash well 37

until no lumps remain. You may choose to retain a cup of the excess water for thinning the soup later.

3. Add salt, pepper and a little chilli powder, ensuring that you test taste as you go.

4. Add cream to taste, but roughly a minimum of 125ml.

5. If the soup is thicker than you like, add milk and/or saved water.

6. If you like the soup spicy, add a little more chilli powder, but again test taste as you go. This recipe in terms of quantities used is very much a trial and error process.

Letter to the Editor about our Melbourne Cup Day Stepping onto the red carpet and after walking a couple of metres then passing under the floral decked arbore with it’s welcoming sign, one continued on the red carpet which led to lovely ladies handing out champagne and strawberries, to get one and all in the mood. What a tremendous start to Melbourne Cup 2017 and where was this magnificent venue – the SBC! The decor was superb, the atmosphere electric and second to none. Tables were set beautifully and everyone settled down in front of the full size screen (compliments of the dart club). We were all armed with our sweepstake tickets, win was a bonus, lose no problems.

Our delightful meal followed and then the very polished entertainment ! Liza Minelli and Dean Martin and his numerous talents with singers in the era. Brian Walks Tall in the Company of Champions

B

rian Kiely knows as well as anyone else the ups and downs that sport can deliver but unlike most other participants this gentle giant has emerged from it all with the tag “champion” alongside his name.

Members at the Sorrento Bowling Club can’t help but notice the lofty presence of the 6’6” tall Brian coming and going through the clubhouse doors and performing on the greens in 1 Blue on Thursday and 1 White on Saturday.

But many wouldn’t be aware that just a couple of months ago Brian received the colossal honour of induction into the Western Australian Amateur Football League’s Hall of Champions. At a black- tie dinner at Perth’s Crown Casino in front of an audience of 800, Brian humbly accepted his award for his remarkable sporting career with the North Beach Amateur Football Club as a player, coach and administrator.

Born in Subiaco on 11 January 1941, Brian had his first kick of a footy at around the age of eight and advanced through the grades to become a foundation member of North Beach in 1964 and played in the club’s first game on April 24, 1965, in D grade He went on to play a remarkable 227 games, mostly as a ruckman, with the club from 1965-1981. There was a brief interruption to this sequence in 1968 when he played 18 games for the Floreat Amateur Football Club.

At North Beach, Brian was captain for seven years and in 1965, 1969, 1972, 1973 and 1978 won the club’s Fairest and Best Award. On four other occasions he was runner up.

But Brian’s exploits on the field were recognized further afield and in 1966 and 1969 he was the Western Australian Amateur Football League’s Best and Fairest player in D grade and in C grade in 1971.

In 1972 Brian won the TR Howard Medal for B grade’s Fairest and Best and the A2 Medal in 1976 as well as being runner up three times.

His workload was often doubled when he coached North Beach in 134 games over seven years, ranging from D grade in 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1970, C grade in 1971 and B grade in 1973 and 1974. The list goes on with Brian judged Best Clubman in 1970 41

and 1972. It was also in 1972 that he received the high accolade of Life Membership.

Completing a truly outstanding CV was his appointment as North Beach’s VicePresident from 1976-79 and Club President from 1980-83.

Brian almost made it into WAFL ranks, firstly with Swan Districts and then Claremont, but found that brand of football simply wasn’t for him.

A big man with a big boot, Brian recently recalled that, unfortunately, a lot of his kicks for goal ended up being worth only one point. He grimly recalls that in a C-grade grand final at Leederville Oval, which North Beach lost by only two points, his return with the boot that day was a miserable 1/11. “We were considered certainties to win that game,” Brian lamented.

Brian pushed on with his football until the age of 42 when he was given a “very heavy present” and not very subtlety advised by the club president to “give the game away.”

That present turned out to be a set of bowls and Brian wasted no time transferring to the North Beach Bowling Club where he spent 10 years honing his undoubted skills.

He then spent five years at the now defunct Floreat Park Bowling Club before a 210game stint at Cambridge. During that time Cambridge rose from 1 Blue to 1 White to 1 Red, now Premier Division..

And in 2012, Brian, playing with current Sorrento singles champion Chris Lander as his skipper, helped Cambridge defeat Doubleview in the Premier Division grand final.

That association has been renewed at Sorrento with Brian playing in Chris’ 1 White team on Saturdays.

For Sorrento members, whose attitude on and off the green has greatly impressed Brian, it’s great to have a now-official football champion and top-shelf bowler in their midst.

Naturally Brian will never forget his days at the North Beach Amateur Football Club which, to distance itself from a multitude of football clubs around Australia also known as the Tigers, instead prefers to be called “The Beach”. But that seems to tie in perfectly for Brian who, after changing sports, has well and truly proven that, at the age of 76, he is far from washed up.

e held our annual Darts wind-up luncheon on Sunday 12 November. The following life members were acknowledged: David Wallace, Keith Cooper and Brian Lucas. The meal was followed by the presentations and a few more celebratory drinks. Prior to the presentations we thanked • Ross and Trish Cunningham for preparing a great meal • the Darts committee and delegates for all their efforts throughout the season • Keith and Margaret Cooper who continue to run the Friday night meat raffles on behalf of the Darts Club • the Sorrento Bowling Club for their ongoing support and use of the facilities. In recognition of this support the Darts Club this year donated the new overhead projector which has been installed in the hall.

unday 1 Octber 2017 was our day of motivation and inspiration. It started off with Neil Whyte, a health and fitness consultant leading an entertaining first session. Neil holds the Guinness World Record for the longest jump between two Swiss balls. In 2006 he jumped 2.3 m at a health club in Perth. He also holds the world record for 31 press ups in one minute whilst balanced on four Swiss balls.

He spoke about the importance of “unconscious competence” and how you can develop an ability to adapt and turn a situation to your advantage by handling pressure moments. He then discussed the physical side of bowls and the importance of the correct posture, endurance, muscle strength, joint stability, core stability, flexibility, agility, balance and movement skill as these impacted on a bowler’s hips, knees, and back.

He said that if we wanted to be at our best for bowls we needed a healthy body weight, postural endurance, movement skills, core strength and muscle balance. Men “tune up” their cars but not their bodies.

Overall good health leads to feeling better and then better performance on the green.

We must reduce the amount of junk food we eat if we are to avoid obesity.

In response to a question Neil said that confidence comes with practice and time and that a bowler can learn to have confidence and no fear. John Sturk asked about how you could get your confidence back when 46

you fell in a hole. Neil’s response was that you have got to believe you can do it.

Bruce Eagles asked about the management of nerves. There was discussion about techniques of mindfulness and the importance of staying in the moment.

A final quote from Neil: When the lighthouse of the home port is in sight, the ship’s radar can be turned off and the navigation aids set aside. What remains is to keep the lighthouse in sight and simply sail toward it.

Chris Lander, Clive Adams and Pieter Harris, three of the finest bowlers in WA, then led a session. Both Clive and Pieter started their bowls careers as youngsters. They outlined their achievements and their “memorable years”. Clive said it was important that the bowl feels comfortable in your hand. There was some discussion on the best way to find line. It was noted that using a mark on the bank can create problems if your marker is moved or if the mat is brought up.

They stressed the importance of a reliable delivery and the need to get the bowl away smoothly The four “Ds” with no wobble. All the thought process should (Desire, Determination, occur before you get on the mat. There was then Dedication and Delivery) discussion about the best way to practise. It was were considered a good suggested that “quality was better than quantity” pathway to success and the 2-4-2 was not really practice. Practice needed to focus on repetition and muscle memory and that it was important to keep track of your performance. Pieter said that every practice needed a purpose and he aims for four perfect ends in total over a 30 minute period. He tries to produce the same bowl over and over again. The aim is consistency through the reduction in the number of bad bowls.

The importance of being positive and giving your team encouragement was stressed.

Bad body language was demotivating and that Skippers should lead by example. The importance of feed back was also discussed and how this is a way to improve.

Following a delicious Silver Fern lunch, Chris Lander organised an afternoon of bowls using a new format. The afternoon winners were: 1st Chris Lander, 2nd Brian Lucas, 47

3rd Tiger Hogan and 4th Bob Jeffs.

This forum was part of the “White Paper – Map to Success” that was developed some two years ago . With the ongoing success of implementing this objective the Governing Council have endorsed the ongoing commitment to this initiative and has agreed for Ross Cunningham, Bruce Eagles and Chris Lander to continue with developing the guidelines These three gentlemen were overwhelmed with the support they received from fellow bowlers. Congratulations to Ross, Bruce and Chris from the GC and all Club bowlers for volunteering their services.

Saulie and his “mob” have been decorating an old bone for 30 years. The bone is dressed up differently each year. Last year it was decorated in full ladies bowling gear and presented to Wendy Saul. This year it was Saulie’s turn to re-design the bone for the 2017 re-union of the “mob” and he dressed it as Nic Natennui. Over the years the bone has been decorated as a racing car, a nurse, a bride, a packet of biscuits, a motor bike, a baby, a door-stop, a wedding present and a hairy spider with glowing red eyes and fangs and even dressed in condoms and served on a platter.

Opening Day: 17 September 2017

M

y first impressions of this, the Club’s main event, were the large turnout and significant number of new faces; all goes well for the Club. The weather forecast for light showers didn’t eventuate and the day was cool with sunny periods. After morning tea/coffee, a huge selection of home-made cakes and plenty of mingling and chat, everyone sat down for the formal part of the day.

Club President, John Abercrombie, acknowledged the hard work and success of the Club’s Governing Council and welcomed members and invited guests, Carine MLA Tony Krsticevic, City of Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard, South Ward Councillor Sophie Dwyer and Deputy Mayor Russ Fishwick. Councillor Mike Norman was unable to attend and sent his apologies. Life Members were acknowledged and the very sad passing of Life Member, Graeme Heard was mentioned and we all agreed, Heardie, you will be a big loss and sorely missed at our Club. Graeme’s wife, Nelly, and daughters Julie and Tanya represented him. We offer our sincerest sympathies to all of his family.

Tony Krsticevic addressed the meeting and assured his continual and much appreciated support for our Club. Mayor Pickard, also a strong supporter of our Club, gave us his last address as Mayor and assured SBC of the continued backing and support by the City of Joondalup. That’s great news as we are sure to be requesting further financial assistance in the not too distant future. We thank you, Troy, and wish you every success in whatever venture you now pursue. It was said that the City has a healthy store of money so happy days for Sorrento may be on the horizon!

The 2016/2017 captains, Sharon Eggers and John Godfrey, were acknowledged for their tremendous contributions and commitment. The Croquet Club, our hidden treasure, to quote the President, was also thanked for its prestigious profile to our Club. The Darts Club was also recognised as on-going supporters and for its competitiveness and success. Finally, all volunteers were thanked for their commitment and mention was made of our success in winning consecutively the WA Club of the Year award for excellence.

Proceedings moved onto the greens for the “Rolling of the Bowls”, Troy won that only because his bowl stayed on the green, bad luck Tony. This was followed by the croquet mallet successfully hitting the ball, well done Russ.

All attending were then moved to B green to stand, as requested, on their designated spots as marked out very effectively by Alan Rolls and his team. The result was a huge ‘SBC’ made by madly waving members who posed for a hovering drone above them. People will do almost anything when asked firmly in a friendly way. How many 53

And of course, there was the after lunch bowls competition, the Men’s Captain’s Team versus the Women’s Captain’s Team, which was more of a mixed competition with players calling to each other across the rinks “are you a girl or a boy?” The Women’s Captain’s Team were proud winners of the Opening Day Bowls Tournament and the Des Bennett Memorial Trophy with many winning men losing!

This was all in all a great day with the winners each receiving a $10 voucher to put on their Club card thanks to the generosity of Graeme Whitehorn and Alan Susta.

In Loving Memory of Graeme Heard: 1931 - 2017

G

raeme joined the Sorrento Bowling Club, with 11 others, when it was established in 1976 and remained a “founder” member for 41 years. His beloved Club soon nicknamed him “Heardie”. He was always passionate about our Club both on and off the green and loved and served his Club from day one.

Whenever you played against him there was never a question regarding his fair but fierce competitive spirit. You knew you were in for a battle when you played against him. To his great credit he was always a gracious winner and a gracious loser. Heardie was a gentleman within the game and a pleasure to be with and play with as teammate or opponent.

As the Club’s main coach he helped many of us to bowl better. His “Hot Hints from Heardie” published in the Club’s newsletter were always down to earth and useful advice for Skippers, Thirds, Seconds and Leads.

He had his fair share of success as a bowler. In the 1976 season, the first for Sorrento, he was in the team that won the Pennant playing in the 6th Division. Two years later he skipped the team that won the Club pairs championship. In 1984 he won the “Perpetual Triples” title and in 2001, playing in the 3rd Division. he and the team won the Pennant. In 2006 his rink won the Mixed Championship Fours. This year he won his fifth Veterans Singles title In addition to being a very fine bowler Graeme gave his time as a volunteer. He was the Men’s Bowls Captain on two occasions and was a highly regarded accredited Coach of the game. It was only fitting that in 2006 he was made a Life Member of Sorrento.

Heardie met Nelly, the love of his life, at a St Kilda Town Hall dance and they were married in 1961 at the St. Andrews Church in East Claremont.

Nelly and Graeme had three children, Mark, Julie and Tarnya and lived in Victoria until they moved to Perth in 1975.

Graeme in every facet of his life lived it as a gentleman true and through. He was the nicest and kindliest man and was admired by all who knew him. As a quiet gentleman with a unique sense of humour he touched so many lives with his beautiful character and calming disposition. His kindness and selflessness will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know him. Heardie “loved, laughed and lived”. The passing of one of life’s true gentlemen is a great loss to his family and friends.

GRAEME GEORGE HEARD, we your fellow members of the Sorrento Bowling Club salute you. Your contribution to our Club was enormous and will be remembered with deep thanksgiving. To the lovely family of Graeme we offer you all our heartfelt love at this time.

Letter to the Sorrento Bowling Club Dear Members of Sorrento Bowling Club On behalf of my family I wish to express a heartfelt thank you for the participation of Members in our send off for Dad. How proud he would have been to see you all wearing the Sorrento Bowling Club Uniform and forming a guard of honour. We have had so many comments about how beautiful this was to see.

A special note of appreciation to the members who served as Pall Bearers for Dad. Thank you so much. The presence of so many of you from the Club was of great comfort to us at this difficult time. All of you went beyond being team mates and are now considered extended family by us.

Whilst organising Dads funeral I had a conversation with John Abercrombie and he said to me “I’ll do anything for Heardie!” That appeared to sum up the essence of all of you!

At the Club after the funeral so many came up to us offering your condolence’s and told us stories of what Dad had done for you. Especially his coaching contribution to many. You all are wonderful people and I know Dad was respected and loved by the Club. You will miss him dearly as we do. Long live Sorrento Bowling Club!

An update on how Mum is going: Mum is now a resident of the RAAFA Merriwa Estate 19 Hughie Edwards Drive Merriwa. She is living in the Jasmine Village in the Green Ward. It has just been fully renovated and is beautiful. Mum is still traumatised with losing Dad and a little bewildered as to her new living arrangements.

She said to us the other day Dad came to her in a dream and he said “all is ok and she is where she needs to be” Hearing of her dream was comfort for both her and for us. Mum has put on 3kg since moving to her new residence and the staff are just wonderful. If anyone would like to pop in and see her I’m sure the gesture will be well received by Mum. Once again I extend our gratitude for the love and support from you all. God Bless Sorrento Bowling Club.
