President’s Report

T

his is my last contribution to our newsletter as President. From the outset allow me to recognise the superb contribution that has been made by Neville and Denise Odell in producing the Club’s newsletter over the past six years. In addition to being informative and humorous, the newsletter is a wonderful medium to keep members informed and to allow people to have a say. Well done.

I believe that the Executive Committee and their sub-committees have done a great job over their two year term. The Club enjoys a strong financial position; growing membership; great greens; and I think is generally a very happy club.

Our success has been recognised by BowlsWA in awarding Sorrento the “Bowling Club of the Year” for 2011/12 and by ClubsWA by recognising Sorrento as 2012 finalists in their “Clubs in the Community Award” and “Club of the Year Metro (Small/Medium)”. Hopefully we will win one or both of these awards at the ClubsWA presentation night on 14th April.

Other highlights achieved by the Club over the past two years include: • Increasing membership by 40% to become the largest bowling club in the State in terms of capitated bowlers.

• Improving the Club’s financial position, enabling membership fees to be reduced by 13% Thank you and allowing a range of capital projects to be Mr. President implemented or scheduled for implementation.

• Lifting the standard of our greens to be for all you have recognised as among the best in the State. done for our • Undertaking significant capital improvements including : club – the completion of a $40,000 outdoor area (with the help of the City of Joondalup) – the erection of shade sails along the front of the club house – replacement of essential equipment for the greens and bar operations – additional storage sheds; construction of retaining walls; removal of trees; and the beautification of our surrounds In the coming months you will see: – the complete refurbishment of all ablution areas and the construction of universal access toilets at a cost of $100,000 (thanks to the support of the City of Joondalup); – locker refurbishment and replacement; – the installation of sliding doors in the sports area of the clubhouse; – the erection of additional shade sails; – increased lighting for C Green and possibly B green;

–”A” green is completely renovated and our other greens enhanced to ensure that we continue to be regarded as having the best greens around.

• Replacement of the Club’s ageing till system and the implementation of new membership management and function booking systems, including the introduction of new membership cards based on “smart card” technology similar to that used by Transperth.

• Hosting the National Juniors competition (28th September to 4th October 2013).

Sorrento is now host to the Sorrento Golf Club and the Northern Warriors Cricket Club, in addition to croquet and darts and we welcome these clubs into our community. In the photo alongside you will see some of the golfers enjoying a beer.

I take this opportunity also to again express my sincere thanks to the many volunteers who have supported their Club with countless hours of dedication. The number of volunteers who willingly and unselfishly help and the countless hours they contribute sets Sorrento apart from other bowling clubs.

I would like to express my appreciation to two of our past presidents, Ian Wittber and Ian Marshall for the great support that they have given the Club during my term, in particular managing the Masters Singles event; assisting with Country Week and other BowlsWA events; the Bunnings sausage sizzle; and much more.

Members are encouraged to consider the next two years of the Club’s operation.

Given the growth that we have experienced over the past eighteen months, the running of the Club is becoming an increasingly challenging task. As I have said previously, I will not be nominating for the position of President and other members of the Executive may also not be running. Please have a think about what you could contribute in terms of knowledge and skill to help run the Club in some capacity or consider who you think could do so. Make sure that you cast your vote at the upcoming elections and attend the Annual General Meeting.

On a personal note, I would like to thank you for your support of me as President over the past two years. I thank the members of the Executive and their subcommittees and our volunteers. I believe that the Executive Committee and subcommittees have been very successful in moving the Club forward and indeed as our strategic vision suggested – becoming “the best bowling club in Western Australia” Cheers – Brian Lucas

Men’s Bowls Captains Report

F

irstly I would like to thank you all for your support over the past twelve months.

You might say it has been an “up and down” year but at the end of the day we have had reasonably good results.

Members competing in Pennants should be commended for their commitment with five Thursday teams making the play offs, together with two teams from Saturday.

– Well done. Selection is always a difficult task, made harder by unavailability’s. The last Saturday Pennant round there were 30 players unavailable. Thanks go out to the new bowlers to the club who filled in.

Congratulations to all championship winners. All goes well for future years as nominations for this year were the highest for quite some time.

As this is the end to a very arduous season, there are many people I would like to thank for their support and time spent around the club, there are too many to name, but you all know who I am talking about. From organising Corporate Bowls to organising “Busy Bees” the support to commit was overwhelming. – A big personal thank you. Thank you to President Brian and his Executive for their support and Anne Lilley, Ladies Captain for her kind words of wisdom.

I guess I can say that my highlight over the past two years is the club winning the “Club of the Year award” in the words of Bruce, this was something “special.”

One last special thank you goes out to Ken Giles. Ken was my behind the scenes man, who did a lot to assist me throughout the year. Thanks Ken. Again all members should be congratulated and commended for their efforts over the past year. Without this commitment the club would cease to exist.

Ladies Bowls Captains Report

F

irst of all some general points of interest: • No nominations were received from the Ladies Section for Life Membership.

• Several new sponsors including a real estate agent and electrical contractor have been signed up. Members are encouraged to make use of our sponsors wherever possible.

• A reminder to members that we have two well-equipped, portable First Aid kits in the club. These are located behind the bar and in the Match office respectively In addition, the wall cabinet above the croquet cupboard is being restocked.

• A Welfare notice board has been mounted on the wall near the kitchen doorway

to allow the recording of any information regarding members with health issues.

• Judith Skeet from croquet has requested an annual bowls versus croquet challenge to be considered and included in the ladies 2013/14 calendar of events.

This will be for consideration by the incoming Match Committee • Congratulations to the championship winners and also a ‘good on ya’ to all those who took part in these events.

• Special mention and congratulations to our ladies in Division 1 Green North who played off for the pennant flag on March 11th/12th. Although beaten by Osborne Park on the second day it was a great effort by all players (See photo on cover) • Congratulations are extended to Wendy Saul, Pauline Marsden and Dianne Phillips who have successfully completed the umpires training course • Sorrento will host 5 days of Women’s Country Week events commencing March 18th. Thanks to all who worked in the kitchen catering for the 5 days of Men’s Country Week.

Our 3 major fund-raising events – Fashion Parade, Gala Day and Invitation Day all ran very smoothly and each made a very significant profit. Thank you once again to all members who were involved in these fundraising activities in whatever capacity.

Your contribution and effort ensured a happy and successful event.

In conclusion thanks go to Jean Baker our efficient, caring Welfare Officer and to Val and Carmel for the maintenance of the bookcases. Thanks also to our umpires, both the ladies and the ever willing contingent of men who step in when required.

Thanks go to our coaches for the time and effort devoted to Monday afternoon circuit training. To Joan and her “MKR” teams for events and Pennant catering – we salute you and acknowledge the outstanding contribution you make to the Club My sincere thanks to members of the Ladies Management Committee who have supported me during the last two years. I have tried to meet the challenges presented with professionalism, understanding and a determination to ensure that at all times I represented the lady members to the best of my ability. I wish all ladies a happy, healthy and safe ‘time out’ until the next Pennant season.

Men’s Fours Championship

T

his event saw 16 teams compete for this trophy. In the elimination round there were some surprise results with some of the fancied teams out of contention for the semis and finals. The 8 teams – four in the championship and four in the Plate – had great weather and quite a slippery green.

The Championship semi rounds were a closely matched affair with Peter Crow, Brian Lucas, John Godfrey and Brian Collins getting up by six shots over John Hauck and

his team due to a little breakaway on the last two ends. Richard Bone, John Brown, John Abercrombie and Mike Carrigy had a one shot win over Brian Clausen and his team with a similar breakaway on the last two ends.

The Plate semis weren’t as closely fought with comfortable wins to Martie Angelinovich and his team over John Sturk and team and Trevor Peters team over Norm Claffey and his team.

The finals were a different matter. In the championship Richard Bone and Peter Crow (and their teams) kept a small but very knowledgeable crowd enthralled with some high quality bowling that had the scores neck and neck for the entire game. Neither side could breakaway and it came down to the last end with scores tied at 16 all. Peter and his team prevailed by one shot.

In the Plate play off the quality of the bowling was also very good to the point that after 21 ends the scores were tied despite the fact that Martie Angelinonvich, Tony Bourne, Derek Smith and Mike Thornett had gotten off to a flyer with a 14 to 3 shot lead midway through the game. Another end was required and Martie managed to get over the line by one shot from Trevor and his team. All four teams should be congratulated for the quality of play.

Ladies Fours Championship

A

s there were only eight teams that nominated for this event we elected to play this championship in two sections. From the feedback that we have received it was a great success and will be looked at again next year if we fail to attract more teams.

The winners of each section namely Vonnie King, Nelly Heard, Helen Ironside, Sonia McGrady and Fran Bracknell, Wendy Saul, Barbara Hill and Mary Cressey went through to play off in the grand final on Sunday the 20th of January.

Vonnie King’s team got off to a great start by leading Fran Bracknell by 8 – 0 in the 10

first two ends, however, the ever cool Fran rallied her team and they then slowly clawed their way back in to the game.

It took them the next 6 ends to overtake Vonnie. Vonnie tried in vain to come back only to be defeated by Fran’s team 20 – 12.

Ladies Singles Championship

T

he Ladies Singles Championship final was played on Sunday 17/02/2013 on a windy day and believe it or not a light shower of rain.

The Major was contested by Wendy Saul and Kath Harris.

Kath jumped out of the blocks scoring a four on her first end. Wendy slowly narrowed the gap over the next three ends and then powered ahead to lead Kath 24 – 10. Kath rallied and denied Wendy her last shot for a further three ends before Wendy was able to score that all important one shot.

The Plate was contested by Pauline Bourne and Fran Bracknell. Fran also was slow to get a start but when she did get going she made Pauline work for every end that she won. At the end of the day Pauline was the victor winning by 25 -19.

From a spectators point of view the games that were played were of a high standard, and a pleasure to watch. Congratulations to the winners.

Ladies Invitation Day

he Ladies from Sorrento Bowling Club held their invitation day sponsored by Ray Green from Trevor’s Carpets, on the 8th February 2013 with 22 teams attending from various clubs throughout Perth including a team from Sorrento.

This year we were able to attract several players that play at state level and the competition was of a very high standard. The clubs that were represented were Manning, Melville, Merriwa, Mosman Park, Mundaring, North Beach, Osborne Park, Quinns Rocks, Safety Bay, Thornlie, Wanneroo, Yokine, Gosnells and Sorrento.

The overall winners on the day were R Coote, N Separavich, S McCutcheon and M Cooney from Thornlie and the runners-up were R Jolly, H Heal, S Hogg and L Merz from Manning.

A special thank you to Ray Green for his very generous sponsorship, without which, we would have struggled to run the day. A big thank you to Jan Cook and Carmel Hyde for supplying the flowers for the table decorations, and making up the wine baskets for the raffles. Thank you to Joan and her ladies for feeding the hungry hordes of players. Last of all thank you to the Match Committee for their support and help on the day. A great day was had by all, with many promises from attending teams that they will be back next year. – Coral Smith

Mixed Pairs Championships

T

he major final of the mixed pairs championship was played on Saturday 26th January (Australia Day) between Ron Rogers and Lee Leach and Graeme and Nelly Heard. The mixed pairs had started in November, but the final had been delayed due to thunderstorms, rain and unavailability of players. The plate final is yet to be played because of injury to one of the players.

Ron and Lee prevailed by 4 shots after sneaking out to a 3-4 shot lead in the early part of the match. Every time Graeme and Nelly challenged, Ron pulled out his thunderbolt drives to kill the end. A total of 5 ends were killed and the match took just on 3 hours to play.

Congratulations to Ron and Lee, and to Graeme and Nelly for reaching yet another final. And thanks to all players who took part in sometimes trying conditions.

After a number of delays due to weather, player unavailability, injury and despite a recent red-back spider bite (!), the Mixed Pairs Plate final was completed under lights on Wednesday 6th March.

by Kath and Trevor, but a 4 and a 3 in consecutive ends put Beth and Kevin in a commanding position from where they coasted home. Congratulations Beth and Kevin.

Ladies Delegates Report

– Trevor Orton

• Daniel Woodrow, the new Bowls Australia CDO has met with the club’s Executive to explain his roles & responsibilities. He has also attended the Regional Delegates meeting.

• Lyn Colmer, the Chair of Bowls WA Ladies Match Committee has resigned. Leonie Potts will act in the position until the AGM in July.

• Bowls WA will be calling for nominations for Metropolitan Club of the Year within the next few weeks. I will be proposing to Executive that we submit a nomination for this award as Sorrento certainly meets the required criteria.

• The IRRR will be hosted by the Northern Region this year and is to be held at Scarborough Bowling Club on 13/14 April 2013. This is a most enjoyable competition and as it is a graded event, it is open to all lady pennant bowlers, including Saturday players. Nominations close on the 8th March • The heat rule and use of men playing as thirds in ladies pennant sides remain areas of concern. Sorrento has forwarded formal submissions to Bowls WA on both of these issues and they will be items for discussion at the ladies forum in May. • A circular has been received from Bowls WA expressing concern at the perceived drop in dress standards at Association events. As an initial step, Bowls WA requests that clubs self-regulate the dress policy before Bowls WA intervenes with more specific action.

• Mike Garratt the Chair of Bowls WA Umpires Committee reported that he had received several complaints from umpires about the confrontational attitude of some players- both from club and Association level events. Our umpires have the responsibility of decision-making and upholding the Laws of the Sport of Bowls.

At all club and Association events, they act as Bowls WA representatives and are answerable to Bowls WA as the controlling body for the sport – Anne Lilley 14

Men’s Championship Singles

A

field of 66 entered this year’s singles championship, including a number of our newer members. This number was fantastic to see, and those that I have spoken to all agreed that the event was very successful, although there is always fine-tuning to be done.

After a long first day of sectional play and an alignment round which did not finish until almost 7:00pm, 16 players advanced to the first round. By the end of the second day, only the four semi-finalists remained in the quest for the 2012-2013 champion’s award. In the first semi-final, Brian Clausen – who only returned to the club this year after several years away – was matched against Brian (Tiger) Hogan.

On one occasion, their marker Barry Stewart was asked who had shot, to which he replied “Brian’s black bowl!” As both were using black bowls, a second clarifying question became necessary! After being 9-9 at one stage, Brian Clausen pulled away over the final ends to win comfortably. The second semi-final was between Ian Linford and Mick Martin. Ian established a handy 10 shot lead by half way through the match and held this margin until the end.

The final was then played between Brian Clausen and Ian Linford. This was a very close match early, with the scores tied at 5-5, 8-8 and 12-12 before Ian had a good run of 5 consecutive end wins to set up a 9 shot break. Brian fought back to within 6 shots, but Ian picked up a 3 to be within 1 shot of the win. But Brian wasn’t done with yet, and with Ian holding match, Brian moved the jack to his own advantage and picked up 3 shots. Brian then followed up with a 2 on the next end to be only 4 behind. But Ian was able to get close enough on the last end to close out the match 25-20.

Congratulations to Ian and Brian, and to the losing semi-finalists Tiger and Mick. A small crowd braved the windy and cloudy conditions – a contrast to the first two days of the tournament – to witness an excellent match.

– Trevor Orton Note from your Editor As usual Trevor ran his tipping competition where members were able to back the winner of each of the 22 sections of the sectional play in the Men’s Singles. A very worthy winner of the contest was a bashful and modest Jem Shorland. When 15

interviewed Jem told your Editor how humbled he was to pocket the winner’s envelope (containing $58). Jem did not fancy himself, nor was he fancied by too many others, but he proved too strong for the rest. He picked 17 winners, ahead of four other unlucky tipsters who each selected 16 winners, and a stack of others who only managed to pick 15 winners or less, in this winner-take-all cutthroat event.

Competitors are already in training for this very popular event on the SBC Calendar, and organizers are hoping that some of the more fancied lady members strut their stuff next year.

Mixed Veterans Championships Unfortunately the weather was unkind and this caused the afternoon game to be cancelled.

Morning winners were Neil and Sylvia McLaughlan with Neville and Denise Odell in second place. Kevin Cook and Carmel Hyde were third. Everyone enjoyed and morning game but all supported the Match Committee’s decision to invoke the heat rule.

Men’s’ Championship Pairs

W

e had 32 teams nominate for this event and it was pleasing to see a couple of brand new members nominate, them being Sousta and May. As there is with an event like this there are a few teams that are regarded as favoured to win and at the end of the first round some of these had dropped out of the championship race and into the plate.

The second round further sorted out the teams giving us a look at the calibre of the run into the finals. The third round produced as expected some very close finishes on very good greens and ideal bowling conditions.

So down to the semis we had Snow/Eagles versus Linford/Pilgrim and Nasuti/Elliott versus Sturk/Coffey in the plate and in the championship Hutchinson/Shorland versus Olive/Grisbrook and Bone/Brown versus Draper/Hogan.

Snowy 1 up into the last gained another shot to win by 2. Nasuti pulled away in the last few ends to win with a comfortable margin.

Draper 1 up into the last dropped a 3 to go down by 2. Hutchinson drew level on the 15th end then drew away to win by 5.

The finals were a very close affair with the major going to Hutchinson/Shorland and the plate going to Snow/Eagles. An additional end was required to separate the teams in the plate and in the championship it was another great game with the final score not being indicative of the standard of the game. Congratulations to not only the winners but to all that competed.

Veterans Championships

T

wenty four over 70 men entered this “prestigious” event. After a few “surprises” in the sectional play, Richard Fermoyle, John Collishaw, Brian Clauson and Kevin Cook ended up in the last four..

After two closely contested semifinals John and Brian ended up as finalists. In a close game John managed to draw a three to get to 2324. In the next end John managed to take the jack back to hold three shots.

A beautiful draw to the sprung jack gave with his last bowl gave Brian victory In the Ladies event here were a number of closely contested games.

In the semi-finals Judy Campbell lost to Fran Bracknell and Eleanor Adams lost to Beth McCormack. In the final Beth beat Fran. In the Plate event Denise Odell lost to Sonia McGrady 17

Croquet Report

A

BIG THANK YOU to all the volunteers who have worked around our Croquet area making it look a spectacular part of the Club. Special thanks to Brian Collins, John Sturk and Peter Blake for the new patio roof. Ray Green and Trish Klemp donated plants and Michael Thornett, Ken Vercoe and Jim Woodward helped with the gardening.

Rumour has it, that water was being carted in buckets to the croquet area for the watering of the plants at 6.30am in the morning. Tony Pilgrim on seeing this happen promptly put in reticulation around the new plants.

Dorothy Woods celebrated her 90th birthday in February. Dorothy celebrated her birthday in the style with family on the day, with her son in law cooking her favourite dishes. A luncheon was held a few days later at ‘Primo Cucina’ restaurant at Hillary’s with her Croquet friends.

Even though it was 40 degrees and the chocolate melted in the hampers and the bottles of wine boiled over it did not spoil the genuine happy atmosphere created for Dorothy as a long time active member. It was lovely for her to see the attendance of so many old and new members.

Wandering Members News: Peter Hamilton and Terry Harvey represented Sorrento in the State wide Ricochet Tournament competition held in February.

Glenda Laidler and Mary Ricochet is very popular at Sorrento but not Gardner playing in the all that commonly played at other clubs. The Bunbury Competition. rules were streamlined to minimize delays and formalities and was dubbed as ‘Turbo’ ricochet! This was just as well as we still played from 3:30 on each (35C) afternoon until around 9pm!

To add to the jollity, a book was ran in which you could back the final winner by handing over your free drink ticket at odds ranging from 3:1 up to 20:1. Terry and I decided to back ourselves at the outset, at the 10:1 price. How did we go?

We certainly didn’t win every game but at the end of each of the 4 rounds we were leading the field (and of course the odds went down). Starting the final round we had the situation where, if the York team we were playing won all of the 3 games they 18

would take out the prize. No pressure? Our team lost the doubles - uh oh. Then went down in the first singles. Oo-er. The final singles was a ding dong battle, going down to the bell, then reaching a draw - to be decided by a sudden death’ or ‘golden hoop’ - i.e. next hoop wins. We made it! Another great win for Sorrento.

Daft Doubles: Di McGivern One day in mid-January there came an interesting-looking invitation to register for a competition that was: “The 2013 DAFT DOUBLES TOURNAMENT with a NEWISH FORMAT QUICK-NOISY-FUN ****DIFFERENT AND IMPROVED ****” it boasted!

Being a relative beginner but keen to enjoy the game as much as possible, the unlikely title attracted my attention and I boldly registered my name!

I was accepted, an unsuspecting partner was found for me (Alan Wood), and I arrived with keen anticipation on Friday 22nd February to have some fun!

Before very long, I met Kathy and Peter Hamilton of Sorrento Croquet Club, who expressed their surprise at seeing me there! I soon realized why! The rules were read, the clock was set, and the competition began. Too late I realized that this had nothing to do with being “daft” in nature – it was only me who had been daft enough to enter!

The “field” comprised 48 real players from National, State and Club levels – all very serious and all very good! Nonetheless, I braved the future and played regardless!

After Day 1, all pairs were placed into three discrete groups and the “knock-out” rounds began. Kathy and Peter had won their way into the top group and I was in the bottom one.

Imagine my surprise later when I realized we were playing the semi-finals of the third group, which we lost. We then had to play the losers of the other semi-final, which we won – coming overall third in our section and 19th out of the full field of 24 pairs.

The two-day event wound up with a dinner in the clubhouse and presentation of prizes – for winners of the competition and of the extensive raffle! I left prizeless, but happy that I had broken the ice and played in my first competition – albeit inadvertently!

Flirtation Golf Doubles: Judith Skeet Bunbury Central Croquet Club celebrated their 60th Anniversary on the long weekend in March and invited other clubs to participate in the Flirtation Golf Doubles. Four members from Sorrento attended: Judith Skeet, Di McGivern, Glenda Laidler & Mary Gardner. Each game played was with new partners and opponents.

This created new challenges along with a great social environment.

Coaching Clinics: Kerry Bomford The Golf Croquet National Coaching Director, Greg bury from Queensland visited WA in February and held a coaching clinic of two days. Day 1 was accrediting existing coaches under the new national program. Sorrento was represented by Terry Harvey. Day 2 was a general coaching session open to all players. Sorrento was represented by Terry Harvey, Judith Skeet & Kerry Bomford.

Now to put what we learnt into practice and get rid of those bad habits.

Australia versus “The Rest of the World” Match

A

s Australia Day fell on a Saturday this year, I thought that we would have a novelty day in lieu of Pennants. Forty players turned up, and were formed into two sides based on their country of birth – one for Australians and one for “Aliens”. We actually had two more Australians than Aliens, so Chris Tibbits kindly volunteered to skip for the Aliens.

When the score cards were totalled, each side had won three matches, but the Australians prevailed 112 shots to 106. The game was enjoyed so much that the match committee is considering making this event and annual occasion.

Reminder to our only (I think) German-born player – when you have a roll-up end, you have to roll the jack before you roll your first practice bowl !

Men’s Selection Review

W

e are now at the end of the season with just the play-offs to go. After such a successful season last year, we were always going to struggle with so many teams in the higher divisions.

We had three 2nd divisions on a Thursday, but one was relegated, so we now have two 3rd divisions which gives us a better balance. Also two teams in one colour wasn’t popular with many people. We also lost a 5th division team. On the bright side, we have five teams in the play-offs, so we may still obtain a few promotions.

Saturday’s were not so good with two teams getting into the play-offs and four teams trying to avoid relegation which went down to the last game of the season and two of 20

them playing teams next to them on the ladder also trying to avoid relegation. All that tension could send some of our Mr. Mannering’s into nursing homes. The final results on Saturday, 2 Red and 5 Gold were relegated but 3 Gold got eight points and 2 Gold six points, so both avoided relegation.

Ladies Selection Review

O

verall the season has been quite successful. Relegation by Premier was disappointing but in the latter part of the season they showed they are capable of playing in that Division and with some rebuilding they can return to Premier and hold their position.

Green North finished one (1) point away from second position and played off for the pennant flag in which they made the finals. Well done ladies. (See cover for photo) All others will hold their Divisions. Newer players have come into the various divisions this season and they with the more experienced players are taking a keen interest in where they are placed on the ladder this can only have a positive effect on performances. To advance we all must become determined to improve and make Sorrento a great club overall, rather than good individuals or one good team.

I found Selection Committee members will never be able to satisfy everyone’s requirements, so individuals with concerns must come in and discuss problems 22

rather than ring any one individual. We must also learn to not criticize our players to opposition players, keep our business in house and put the team before personal desires.

Saturday Pennant divisions face relegation next season, it came down to the last game of the season which made the game similar to a final. One Red were half a point away from success, Three Purple were also unsuccessful.

To all Pennant players congratulations for the effort you have put in this season .

To Selection and Ladies Committees you have all been very supportive and it has been a pleasure working with you. All the best for the incoming committee’s.

Greens and Grounds Report

A

nother Pennant season has finished and thanks to our greens’ staff and volunteers, the greens have played very well throughout the season. With the close of Corporate Bowls, A green is now being renovated but the rest of the greens should stay in good condition for the winter competitions.

Work will continue around the grounds with the help of our band of dedicated volunteers. The shade cloths have to come down after Easter and thanks to Alan Wood and Bill Long, this job has been made easier by a new system they have devised of taking down and putting up.

Some work still has to be carried out to the Croquet shed and surrounds but the major part has been completed.

On behalf of myself and the greens’ staff, we would like to thank all the volunteers and committees for their support and enthusiasm during the season and especially the Executive Committee who have contributed to the development of our greens and grounds.

Umpire’s Corner

W

ith the competitive bowling season now completed umpires can now take a well earned break from officiating the many men’s and ladies events and competitions held during the year.

There has been almost 200 umpire allocations made during the season and I thank all those umpires for making themselves available and assisting in making these events a success.

The role of the umpire has changed in recent years with the introduction of the extreme weather rules adding another dimension to their duties and responsibilities.

This has seen an increasing trend across bowls in WA, in players questioning decisions and feeling that umpires are being over officious in applying these and other rules as well as making decisions with a home team bias.

If you enter or play in an event or competition that is at a level or standing that requires an accredited umpire you must expect and accept that it will be played and umpired in accordance with the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. The umpire has a duty to make sure this happens. Most of the questioning of umpire decisions is due to players not being aware of or understanding the laws and rules of the game or the role of the umpire.

When an umpire is called, he/she no longer represents or acts for the Club or Team they belong to, but is representing and acting for the Controlling Body (e.g. Bowls WA for Pennants) 24

About this time each year Bowls WA conducts one of its twice-yearly training courses for new and re-accrediting umpires. A notice from Bowls WA is currently on the notice board giving details of tutorials and venues. All competitive bowls events require accredited umpires and I would strongly encourage any player with an interest in this area to take up the challenge and become an accredited umpire.

Sorrento will be fielding 4 darts sides this year. Two sides have been nominated in the Sports and Bowling competition and two in the Bluewater competition.

The Sports and Bowling Club Association darts are programmed to start beginning of April with Bluewater Association starting at end of April. These dates will be confirmed with teams and fixtures as soon as the information becomes available The Darts Club has donated money for the supply and installation of a set of sliding doors to the bar area opening out to the covered verandah. The plans have now been approved by the club executive committee and Joondalup city and we hope they will be installed within the next two months.

Fee’s this year are $20 per player for dart club membership and $5 per night for players. Could everybody try and pay membership fee’s to Mr. Brian Lucas or Wayne Gray by the second night of competition We hope everybody enjoys themselves and look forward to another successful year – Wayne Gray 25

Some More “Hot Hints from Heardie” In this newsletter we will discuss the role of the Lead, Second, Third and Skip.

Lead The Lead should deliver the jack as close as possible to a distance determined by the Skip and play draw shots close to the jack for the development of the head. A Lead should practise the art of delivering the jack and try and perfect the basic shot of the game – the draw shot.

Second The Second should be able to draw to the jack or to a position as requested by the Skip. They need to be a versatile and competent player and play a controlled weighted shot.

Third The Third should be a versatile and experienced player and should be able to play all shots – draw, metre on, wresting shot, on shot and drive. Should have a good knowledge of the rules.

Skip The Skip is the person in charge of the team and therefore needs to have tactical and bowling skills. He/she must direct the players to develop the head. Should have the capabilities to get the best from the team. Must display encouragement and never be critical.

hanks to Ray Stapledon for running this competition and for donating a bottle of his top quality Scotch. Unfortunately there were only 34 entries of which 10% were from one member and 10% from our ladies. This means that only about 8% of our members participated in this competition.

A survey of the 92% who did not participate found that members did not enter for one or more of the following reasons: • Don’t drink Scotch • Don’t read the newsletter and did not know about the competition • Found the competition too difficult No one was able to pin-point Bruce’s position exactly so it was decided to place all the entries in a bag and to draw a lucky winner. enise and I hope you are enjoying our April Newsletter. You will see that with all the club competitions in the last few months we do not have too much space available for jokes and funny stories.

We did not have space for Eleanor Adam’s joke about the gynaecologist who decided to become a mechanic or Helen Ironside’s joke about celibacy, Ian Marshall’s joke about chewing gum or Warren Elliott’s puns.

Did you hear that in the “important” International game on Australia Day Herbie Eisenmann managed to put his first bowl down before he had delivered the kitty? Barry Bradshaw, who was present on this historic occasion, was thrilled as he was no longer the only person to hold this record!

Did you know Bin Laden was living in hiding in Pakistan with 3 wives in one compound and never left the house for 5 years. It is now believed that he ‘phoned the US Navy Seals himself.

Did you hear about Barry Bradshaw taking his lawn mower to one of our sponsors, Balcatta Mowers, for a service. When returning home he managed to place it on a slope alongside his swimming pool. Whilst his back was turned the mower rolled down the slope into the pool. Balcatta Mowers (one of our sponsors) were then requested to do a second service.

Did you hear that Frank Gandras, risking life and limb climbed perilously high {well fairly high} to the ceiling and skylight windows of our clubhouse function area to clean and dispose of a colony of spiders [two daddy long legs] and a heap of black spider webs, a lot of dust and countless left over streamers and balloons? Club members can now feel safe and clean and it may even be a bit lighter.

The lawn bowls faithful were a little nervous when they heard ScarboroughWombarra Bowling Club management were putting a hole in their sacred green.

But club spokesman Phil Jordan reckons it won’t take them long to come round, especially after they give the new Bowl in One game a shot. The game involves rolling a lawn bowl down the green, aiming to sink it into the flagged hole. Each week, the prize money jackpots until someone sinks the bowl in one roll.

Did you know that Wendy Saul, our new Ladies Singles Champion has been bowling for only about seven years? Brian Saul claims credit for chatting her up and thereby getting her to transfer from Morley to Sorrento.

Thanks to Brian Self and Peter Farrell who both sent in an article that expresses concern that lawn bowls is now a hotbed of drug use, with sports scientists using all sorts of concoctions to keep players alive for their next game.

Apparently there is also evidence of widespread corruption, with meat raffle prizes offered to bribe players to keep quiet about the sport’s sordid goings on. Arthur Crimshaw, head of Bowls Australia, denies any wrong doing saying it is perfectly natural for players to want to be kept alive.

But he refused to answer many questions at a press conference, mainly because his hearing aid was turned down too low. Some players have been found to be wearing electronic devices to artificially stimulate their heart, giving them an advantage over other players who don’t use the device and are … well, dead. Others are taking stimulants to keep them awake during the game. These drugs have also been passed to spectators so they don’t fall asleep when games are televised. The government has announced a probe into the sport. Crimshaw said his players were used to probes, just as long as they’ve been sterilized and are not too cold.

Did you hear that twelve of our members went out to celebrate Emily Dunn’s and Stan McCullagh’s birthdays? A quick calculation from Margaret Cooper confirmed that the combined age was very close to 1000 years?

Barbara Rutherford tells me she played at the Greenslopes Bowling Club in Queensland. The local possums like to hide in the folded back shade cloth and do not like to be disturbed. Greenslopes’ members have also had problems with nesting plovers attacking Pennant players. We are lucky at Sorrento! We are only hassled by the odd maggie!

Did you know that John and Phillipa Collishaw celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary 16 March 2013? Well done!

In the last newsletter we failed to mention that Ray Stapledon hand raises and sell weiros (cockatiels). When he is not practising his topiary skill, he can also entertain an audience by squeezing jelly through his teeth. We certainly have some very talented members at Sorrento.

John Forkin sent in a cutting about a Brit Sharon Tendler who married a dolphin she has been visiting for the past 15 years. Wearing a white dress she kissed him to the cheers of the spectators. “I’m the happiest girl on earth and not a pervert” the bride said as she swam away with her new husband – Neville Odell

Wally Smith Silver Chain Charity Day – 2013

T

he Sorrento Bowling Club has hosted a charity fund raising day for the Silver Chain organization every year for the past twenty years and this year the event raised a record donation of $1500, bringing the grand total raised over the years to $26,500.

The Silver Chain is a not for profit organization and is one of largest providers of community clinical and health care services in Australia. They offer a diverse range of services, including home care, palliative care, emergency care, family health care and other services.

The event is called the Wally Smith Silver Chain Charity Day in memory of an earlier club member who was receiving health care when he suggested the inclusion of this event in the Clubs annual programme. A number of Sorrento bowlers or their family members are currently receiving Silver Chain care.

The twentieth annual event was held on Friday February 22 and following a great afternoon bowling club members and guests took part in a raffle of over forty prizes which had been donated by corporate sponsors or club members. Funds raised from the raffle, together with a percentage of the days green fees donated by the Sorrento Bowling Club, and including all money normally set aside for the days bowling prizes, was again donated.

Bowling competition winners on the day were Stan McCullagh, Cal O’Donnell, Bob Stephen and Trish Smith. They all won a small prize and will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy.

While it is not possible to thank all of the volunteers who either personally contacted local business houses seeking sponsors for the days events, donated prizes themselves, or helped run the days events, we do need to thank some members who made a significant contribution, including Sylvia McLaughlan, Barbara Stow, Chris Tibbits, Pat Duffy, Ros Pittaway, Kerry Sjepcevich.

Dear Seeker of Excellence

Your first job is to be mentally focused on your body during each component of your delivery. How are you standing? Are your feet pointed toward your aiming point? Are your knees bent? Do you take your backswing straight away and along your aiming line? Is your downswing straight along your aiming line?

Do you flip your wrist? Do you dump the bowl so high off the surface of the rink that is would be subject to “taking a funny bounce” and going awry? Do you meticulously scrutinize your delivery line to see if it is exactly on top of your aiming line? (If you don’t, you won’t know how to adjust your aiming point if you don’t dead draw the jack.) Do you follow through until your arm is parallel to the surface of the rink and your hand is pointing toward your aiming point?

An exaggerated follow through is often an instant fix for people who have a tendency to miss their aiming line. Good bowlers usually hit their aiming line consistently. Then all they have to do is adjust their weight. You’ll see many good bowlers come up short or finish behind the jack on their first bowl. But on their second bowl they adjust their weight and finish very close to their target, whether they’re drawing to the jack, putting in a block, or sending down a back-bowl.

One of the best drills for making your deliveries consistent is called “The Reproducibility Drill” or “Garbage Can Lid Drill.” You roll a bowl, then try to reproduce that same delivery with your next three bowls. Practice until you can consistently roll four bowls, whereby you can cover all four of them with a garbage can lid.

Mixed Social Bowls – A Great Day Out “Nothing antisocial about this fabulous four”

T

heir names don’t appear in gold type on Sorrento’s honour boards but the stalwarts who run the social bowls afternoons are truly club champions. It’s a task which attracts little fanfare but Chris Tibbits and Barbara Spence on Fridays and Stan McCullagh and Betty Stern on Sundays play a massive role in Sorrento’s overall wellbeing.

Apart from providing an outlet for those seeking companionship and friendly rivalry, 34

the club’s social bowls program also generates valuable, and mostly underestimated, revenue for the club. And the Heart Foundation, Silver Chain and Cancer Foundation can certainly vouch for the generosity and enthusiasm of Sorrento’s social bowlers in three big fund-raisers each year.

Chris, Barbara, Stan and Betty have been running the social bowls for around five and a half years following the death of the legendary Joe Stow, who had performed the Herculean task, along with his wife Barbara, of overseeing the job on both Fridays and Sundays. A roster system was tried after Joe’s passing but this proved unsatisfactory and it was then that our current quartet stepped up to the plate.

Chris Tibbits reckons social bowls at Sorrento is a “community within a community – a family affair and the very fabric of the club”. Like his three selfless cohorts, Chris is very passionate about his role and, as a former bank manager, can produce statistics which verify the outstanding value of social bowls to the club.

During the course of 2012, a total of 1994 players took part in Friday’s social bowls and generated $13,958 in green fees and prize money. That an average of 40 people attended each Friday afternoon last year, and spent a conservatively estimated $10 each at the bar afterwards gives a clear view of the whole picture.

Stan McCullagh reports that during the last 12 months a total of 1400 Sunday social bowlers generated $7000 to the club’s coffers – not to mention bar trade. Six Sundays were lost to heat, rain and club champions. But Stan is concerned numbers are dwindling a bit on Sunday with an average in the 20s turning up. “Give us a ring between 11.30 and 12.30 on Friday and Sunday to have a game – you might enjoy yourself,” he said.

“Mixed social bowls has been the backbone of our club for many years,” Stan said. “Most of us, possibly, started our bowling journey as social bowlers”.

Stan said while some may think social bowling was a bit boring, we should never forget that we were all learners once and today’s learners need help and encouragement to improve their game.

“As most of us play Pennants, we realise we haven’t got time to play socially as well but it’s a good opportunity to practice different shots and play in different positions in a team as well,” he said.

Sorrento’s Pennant selectors can certainly attest to the value of the club’s social bowls program. Each week during the Pennant season a total of 104 on Thursday and 112 on Saturday must be found to fill up the men’s team boards. And on Tuesdays 64 ladies are required and 16 on Saturdays. Not all have come through the social bowls system but a hell of a lot have.

So, next time you have a Friday or Sunday afternoon free, pick up the phone and dial 9447 0696 for, make no mistake – you will be doing yourself and your club a big favour.

Women’s Over 60’s State Triples

S

orrento bowlers Wendy Saul, Lee Leach, and Coral Smith took part in the Women’s Over 60’s State Triples event. The first round was held at north beach bowling club on the 6th March and involved sectional play. Our group opponents were a team from Thornlie along with a composite team of Lee Poletti, Vicki Spragg, and Kerry Anderson, who have played and won many state games.

Our first game was against the composite team and we played some great bowls to beat them 17/12. A win over Yokine took us through to the next round on the 7th March at Rossmoyne bowling club. At Rossmoyne we were up against Safety Bay and to our delight a victory over them took us through to the quarter finals.

In the quarter finals our opponents were another composite team of ladies who have played and won the state triples previously. This team played an excellent game of bowls and regrettably ended our involvement in the contest.

The three of us were elated to get so far in this competition, it was such a wonderful experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our participation. We would encourage more Sorrento ladies to take part in these events. There is nothing to lose but there is a lot to gain.

hese photos show one of our members in a “before and after” pose at a football match in Japan. The caption under the photos was “We BEAT the Kiwis – but my head still hurts”. It appears that at an Interservice Rugby Carnival at Kure in Japan between the Australian Army, Australian Air Force and the New Zealand Army.

The Spirit of the Game

Y

ou are in that game just managing to keep level with your opponent and they get a lead of three.

You draw three in the next end and then with their last bowl they draw one, you are now down by four shots.

You win the next four ends with one hard won shot each end. Now the score is level 17 shots all. Your opponent wins the next three ends by taking out your close bowls with shots you have to appreciate. Then you score three the score now 20 shots each, 21 to win. Who will win this last end? Tense play, good tight ends, and played in a good spirit, each opponent appreciating the skilled shots of the other. THAT IS A GOOD GAME played in the RIGHT SPIRIT. That is what sport was once all about, training to improve a skill and playing a good competitive game against, hopefully, a strong opponent IN THE RIGHT SPIRIT OF THE GAME. Sport was used to teach children a set of rules, the discipline of brushing up their skills and teaching them to appreciate good play done within the rules of the game as well as recognizing the umpire or referee ruling.

Unfortunately the ethics of sport has changed now to win at any cost in the 38

professional sport is seen to be so dominant. We see the smashing of racquets, arguing with referees, taking opponents out, brawls in the field of play. None of this on the bowling green! But body language can be recognized by your partner or opponent such as turning away, not speaking, raising ones arms or eyes as a sign of, ‘I don’t believe this’. The act of taking bowls out of the head when counting before giving your opponent the opportunity to measure, surely when in doubt measure it out. Also not shaking hands at the end of the game. All these actions mentioned in all sports raises the question did this type of behaviour enter sport from society or did sport give this attitude to society?

We have been taught from writings from early times such things as, ‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. That means leave something for those less fortunate than you. Also ‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbour as yourself’.

Sport is a one-winner situation; hopefully you will have a good loser when the game is played in the RIGHT SPIRIT. In most of society of all cultures A FAIR GO is asked of us to live a life with the RIGHT SPIRIT. Most of us do this, but not all, some will play the winning game to get there at any cost to the detriment of those in their way, this is not what we are called to do and not living in the RIGHT SPIRIT of life.

Father and Son Day

espite some cancellations, thirty teams of genuine and some dubious combinations and families enjoyed the annual Fathers and Sons night of bowls and BBQ. It was not a case of “like father like son” when Ken Partridge team up with son Mark to be overall winners, narrowly from Tony Sabatino ( also known as AIM*) and son Nigel in second place with John Farmer and Clinton in third place.

Glenn Boston and Adrian Caroll may not be “winners” but a “6-pack” certainly made them smile. The four Bradshaw teams excelled in the raffles 39

each going home with a “6-pack”The organising committee thanks all the participants and suggests a few team start training for next year! * AIM. = “Always in the Money”

A Nine Badge?

uring the organised game of ‘3 bowl triples’ on Saturday 2nd March the team of Philip Oldershaw, Ken Partridge and Bob Jeffs scored a 9. Should we mention the opponents? Oh – alright then, Alan Anderson, Harry Bandow and Ray Dunn. In the interest of fairness, it should also be mentioned that Alan and his team went on to win the game comfortably.

Community Bowls 2012/13 Season Report

W

ith the thankful help of many club members, back in October last year, with letter box drops to their local areas, our flyer produced a near full house for Tuesday nights (22 teams) and a full house for Friday nights (24 teams) contributing to Community Bowls being a huge success this season. Regrettably we did see a couple of teams withdraw before the season end, but the competition continued with some very good bowling.

The play-off for bragging rights between the Tuesday night winning team, ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie’ and the Friday night winning team ‘Kelly’s Hero’s’ saw some fantastic bowls played with scores locked at 6 all after 7 of the 11 ends played in the allocated hour and a half.

Perhaps it was the pressure of the game or the performance enhancing qualities of that NZ wine used by team Aussie Aussie Aussie not being up to scratch, whatever it was, Kelly’s Hero’s went on From left to right: to win 14 shots to 1 over Kelly’s Heros – Alan, Danny, Alan, and Dave the last 4 ends to clinch Aussie Aussie Aussie – Dale, Neil, Gary and Erin, the game to loud applause from the team faithful. A 40

round of 3 cheers and Aussie Aussie oi oi oi followed as the teams congratulated each other. In recognition of their respective team efforts throughout the season, both teams were invited to represent Sorrento Bowling Club at the Bowls WA Corporate Shield event to be played at the Thornlie Bowling Club on the 4th May. We hope they can hold their form and go on and win some of the money on offer to winning teams.

We congratulate both teams on their season winning performances and wish them success on the big stage on May 4th.. – Russ and Alan.

Our Mahjong Ladies

I

n 1994 our then Bowls President, Irene Gatter, suggested that, if any ladies were interested in learning how to play Mahjong, she was willing to teach them.

A few ladies took up the offer and the group quickly grew. New ladies to the Club joined and we soon had a large group.

Sadly our numbers declined a little as ladies moved to other areas or became too ill to attend. We have two originals still playing and two ladies aged 89 and 93 enjoying the fellowship.

We start at 9 am every Wednesday and would welcome new players.

Bring your lunch.

There is also a small group who play on Wednesday afternoon starting at 12 noon. They would also like some new players to join them. – Joan Napier 41

September 2014 Trip to Greece

I

, along with my two great friends, Jane and Dick Marks, have been to Greece many times and we would love to show you some of our favourite places.

In September 2014 we are organising a trip to Greece – one week on the mainland taking in Athens, Delphi and Meteora and a one week cruise amongst the incomparable Greek Islands – and it would be fabulous if you could join us!

You will be staying in a hotel in Athens with views of the Temple of Zeus, the Acropolis and Lykavettos and we can expose you to the classical Greek art in a way that Keats would have envied but there is more to Greece than its rich history and its fascinating ruins – so come with us and we can explore together!

Also if there is enough interest, we are thinking of adding an optional week to Croatia to the two weeks in Greece. Because of the Cruise content of the tour, we will be requiring a fairly definite expression of interest as soon as possible with deposit paid

by September 2013.
