Wow… what a spring we’ve had at BIGiOK! We started out with EmPowerHer in March with a sold-out crowd at Cole’s Garden. We presented the BIGiOK Woman of Impact to Sara Bradshaw Ray, who has a longstanding legacy with our Association. Sara has 35 years of experience with agency ownership, company underwriting and alliance development. More recently, she has

During his six-year tenure as our state director on the IIABA National Board, he has drawn on his insight into and knowledge of our Association and industry to lead our mission on both a state and national level. We presented Glen Mulready with our Legacy of Service Award to thank him for his years of service to our industry and the state of Oklahoma as a legislator and state insurance commissioner.

We presented our own BIGiOK member, Chris Floyd, with the Eagle of Excellence Award, which honors individuals whose

and his wife, Kathy, have been a joy to travel with over the past six years, and I have personally appreciated their support and friendship. I wish them the best!

I would be remiss not to mention all of our award winners at INSURCON! We have an outstanding membership with many incredible people. The awards are by a vote of their peers, and I moved every year by the stories that we hear about them. We should all be inspired to do more in this profession that we have all chosen.

One more word about INSURCON. … What a great turnout! We had more that 550 people attend and more than 70 booths at our Trade Show. We hosted an Insurance Candidate Commissioner Forum, during which attendees able to hear from those running to lead our state for our industry.

How Cause and Effect Relates to Insurance

Cause and effect can in some ways relate to most events in our lives. It’s the relationship between events where one event (the cause) makes another event happen (the effect). For example, what does it take for someone to invent something? First, set a goal to solve a problem, then conduct a process of experiments until the desired result is obtained. “If I do this, then this is the result”: cause and effect. Some other examples are that rain causes slippery streets, or that studying causes higher grades.

Factual vs. Legal Causation Factual causation uses the “but-for” test; but for the event, would the loss have happened? Legal (proximate) causation determines if the loss was a foreseeable result of that event.

Chain of Events A single cause can trigger a cascade. For example, a storm (cause) might knock over a tree, which breaks a power line, leading to a fire (effect). If the storm

For insurance, this requires looking at both the legal mechanics of claims and the economic drivers behind premium rates. At its core, insurance is a financial tool designed to manage the “effects” of unpredictable “causes”. Let’s look at four factors next that break down the mechanics of all this.

The Legal Core: Proximate Cause In insurance law, the cause of a loss isn’t always the most recent event.

Instead, courts and adjusters look for the approximate cause – the active, efficient 6

is the “covered peril,” the ensuing fire damage is covered because the storm started the chain.

Concurrent Causation This occurs when two or more independent causes – one covered and one excluded – combine to cause a loss. Some jurisdictions follow a “cause theory”; others use an “effect theory” to determine how many separate occurrences took place.

From the Chairman Underwriting: Behavioral Causes and Financial Effects Insurance companies use cause-andeffect data to price risks. Your personal choices are the “cause” that dictates the “effect” of the premium. Some examples of this in life and health insurance would be that tobacco use leads to higher premiums than non-tobacco use.

Healthy diet and exercise lead to lower premiums. High-risk hobbies such as skydiving and racing automobiles lead to premium hikes or coverage denial. And a safe driving history can lead to lower automobile insurance premiums.

Increased frequency and severity of severe weather (cause) can lead to a “hard market” where premiums rise and some insurers exit high-risk areas entirely (effect).

After an incident occurs, the insured is responsible for taking steps to prevent further damage (e.g., tarping a roof after a storm). Failure to do so may cause the insurer to deny part of the claim.

Macro-Level Trends: Systematic Cause and Effect

Increasing litigation costs and higher jury awards (cause) drive up liability insurance rates for businesses (effect).

On a personal note, I’ve had formal training in the U.S. Navy as a jet engine mechanic. In my youth, auto mechanics always fascinated me and I’ve had a lot of informal training there as well. As referenced above for insurance, I see this process as very much mechanical. From all my years in this industry I can see how this is all intermingled, which makes it all the more intriguing to me … my “cause and effect.”

Message to Young Agents: No One Starts Out With All the Answers

For many young insurance agents, confidence often feels like something that only comes with time. It is easy to look at top performers and assume they are simply more experienced, naturally gifted or somehow unaffected by pressure.

Confidence is not pretending to know everything; it is being comfortable enough to say, “I do not know, but I will find out for you.”

The truth is that most successful agents have felt the same uncertainty at some point in their careers. Success is rarely about grinding harder or waiting until you finally “feel ready.” It is about learning to think clearly under pressure and understanding the fine line between confidence and arrogance.

Early in your career, it is normal to secondguess yourself or feel like everyone else has everything figured out. Most people are learning as they go more than they let on. The difference is not the absence of doubt. It is the ability to recognize unhelpful thought patterns, regulate emotions, and refocus quickly instead of letting those moments define you.

Experience will come with time.

Confidence, however, is built by learning to trust your preparation and master your mindset now.

The mental side of this business matters just as much as product knowledge and sales ability. High performers learn how to manage nerves before an important client meeting, quiet the internal dialogue that creates self-doubt, and stay present enough to make sound decisions in real time.

One of the hardest lessons for young agents to learn is that no one has all the answers, and that is OK. Our industry changes constantly, and so do our clients’ needs. Questions will come up that you may not know how to answer. Even the

A Final Message of Gratitude and Confidence As I conclude six years of service as national director, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to represent Oklahoma’s independent

agents at the national level. It has been an honor to serve alongside so many dedicated professionals who care deeply about this industry and the communities they support.

I also want to assure our members that they are in excellent hands moving forward with our incoming national director, Stewart Berrong. Stewart brings strong leadership, experience and dedication to this role, and I have every confidence he will continue advancing the mission of the Big “I” on behalf of independent agents across Oklahoma and the nation.

How We’ve Helped Oklahomans Save Money and Strengthen Their Homes

As I look back over the past seven years in office, I’m proud of the real results the Oklahoma Insurance Department has delivered to Oklahomans. Our focus has been simple: we work at helping people protect their homes, their families and their financial future. Every program and effort have been aimed at saving Oklahomans money and strengthening consumer protections.

We are also encouraging Oklahoma consumers to participate in the Wildfire Prepared Home designation program, a program of IBHS, which is now available in Oklahoma. This program empowers homeowners to take science-based, proven steps to meaningfully reduce wildfire risk to their home and property.

From roof grants to fire protection improvements to money recovered for consumers, OID’s work over the past seven years has focused on one goal: protecting Oklahoma consumers and strengthening our insurance market.

Protecting Homes and Lowering Insurance Costs Last year, OID launched the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Grant Program, modeled after a successful program in Alabama. This program helps homeowners strengthen their roofs to better handle Oklahoma’s high winds and severe storms.

By installing an IBHS FORTIFIED Roof™, homeowners can reduce storm damage, avoid expensive repairs and save an estimated $700–$800 a year on their homeowners' insurance premiums. This program is about more than grants; it’s about building stronger homes so

Improving Fire Protection Across Oklahoma OID’s Fire Protection Services Division also plays an important role in helping communities lower insurance costs. Through the Public Protection Classification program, fire departments are evaluated on their training, their equipment and their ability to respond to fires.

Nearly 20% of Oklahoma’s 1,000 fire departments across all 77 counties have improved their PPC ratings. We all know that better fire protection not only saves lives, but it can also lower insurance premiums. Insurance companies use PPC ratings when setting continued on page 14 Summer 2026 | POLICY

Recovering Money for Consumers When Oklahomans have problems with either insurance claims, billing or coverage, OID’s Consumer Assistance Division steps in to help. In 2025, OID helped recover $10.8 million for consumers. This is money that was returned directly to policyholders. This shows our commitment to making sure insurance companies follow the rules and treat people fairly.

Helping Families Find Lost Life Insurance Benefits OID also helps families search for lost or forgotten life insurance policies through the Life Insurance Policy Locator. Since December 2016, this program has helped match 10,278 policies totaling more than $200 million in benefits.

INSURCON 2026 Brings Together Oklahoma’s Independent Insurance Community INSURCON 2026 brought energy, connection and industry insight to Oklahoma’s independent insurance community, drawing more than 575 attendees for one of BIGiOK’s most active and memorable annual gatherings.

The Partner Showcase featured 78 booths, creating a vibrant trade show floor filled with conversations, resources and opportunities for agents, company representatives and industry partners. Foremost earned the Best Booth Award for its standout presentation, while Amwins received Best Swag honors for promotional items that quickly became attendee favorites.

The event also delivered meaningful impact beyond the conference floor. OK Keys for a Cause, featuring a dueling piano bar, raised more than $10,000 for OKPac, demonstrating the continued commitment of BIGiOK members and partners to advocacy efforts.

INSURCON also celebrated leadership through the Annual Awards presentation, recognizing individuals whose service and dedication continue to strengthen the profession. The FILO (Future Insurance Leaders of Oklahoma) Reunion and Kickoff welcomed more than 75 rising leaders, marking an exciting step for the next generation of industry professionals.

A well-attended Insurance Commissioner Candidate Forum provided timely discussion on issues affecting Oklahoma’s insurance marketplace. Breakout sessions added practical value, including E&O insights, technology trends with Catalyit and information on the Fortified Homes Program.

From education and advocacy to networking and celebration, INSURCON 2026 was more than an event. It was a reflection of the strength, momentum and shared purpose within Oklahoma’s independent agency system.

Commissioner Candidates Outline Market Concerns, Consumer Pressures BIGiOK’s Insurance Commissioner Candidate Forum gave attendees a valuable look at how the Republican candidates view Oklahoma’s insurance market and the role of the Oklahoma Insurance Department.

Throughout the discussion, several common themes emerged. All four candidates pointed to rising property insurance costs, the need for greater competition among carriers, and the importance of restoring consumer trust in the insurance system. They also agreed that Oklahoma’s weather risk continues to shape the market and that stronger mitigation efforts, including better construction standards and rural fire protection, must remain part of the conversation.

Where the candidates differed was mainly in emphasis. Marty Quinn highlighted legislative experience and the need to improve the overall business climate. Gretta Schuler focused on consumer concerns and practical local solutions. Chris Meredith stressed transparency, data access and operational reform. Bob Sullivan centered his comments on trust, accountability and the value of the independent agent perspective.

For agents in the room, the forum reinforced one clear point: the next commissioner will play a major role in shaping affordability, competition and confidence in Oklahoma’s insurance marketplace.

There are moments when an event delivers exactly what you hoped for – and then there are moments when it quietly exceeds expectations in ways no one saw coming.

EmpowerHER 2026 was both.

On Wednesday, March 25, nearly 160 women gathered at Cole’s Garden in Oklahoma City for a day that lived up to its promise: Real Women. Real Stories. Real Power! From the very first welcome to the final moments on the patio, the energy in the room was undeniable – women showing up ready to grow, connect and lead with intention.

A Day Designed for Growth – and Delivered With Purpose EmpowerHER 2026 wasn’t just another conference. It was an experience intentionally crafted for women at every stage of their leadership journey – whether just beginning, stepping into new roles or rediscovering their spark.

In a surprise presentation, Sara Bradshaw Ray was honored with the “BIGiOK Woman of Impact” Award – a recognition of her visionary work in building a women’s empowerment movement that now stretches across multiple states and into the national Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (Big I) network.

What began as a passion for equipping and encouraging women in leadership has grown into something far greater: a movement rooted in connection, courage and meaningful growth.

The standing ovation that followed said everything.

The Real Power of EmpowerHER If there was one takeaway from EmpowerHER 2026, it’s this: The power isn’t just in the content.

It’s in the collective.

It’s in the courage to share real stories.

It’s in the willingness to listen, reflect and grow.

And it’s in leaders who create spaces where others can rise.
