he mission of International House is to enable selected graduate students and interns from countries around the world to live and learn together in a challenging and supportive residential community that builds lifelong qualities of leadership, tolerance, respect and friendship among individuals of all nations and backgrounds. An independent, non-profit organization, I. House achieves its mission by daily interaction among its residents and other members through programs, facilities and residential life designed to foster diversity of thought and experience, and to prepare our residents to meet the challenge of an interdependent world.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Resident Member:

It is my fervent hope that you enjoy this /nternational House Directory! In addition to serving as a handy reference for our large and diverse community, it describes our mission or purpose, our 85 year history, our profile, our distinguished Board of Trustees, our World Council of Alumni and the endowed scholarship funds that are provided by supporters of the House to help resident members and achieve greater diversity. Perhaps most importantly, it is Keepsake of your participation in our |. House community. We know that former resident members save their Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their community life and prompting memories when contacting at friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni members for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of “whatever happened to...?” and “do you remember when...?” often refer to the directories provided when was a resident member at |. House during my graduate studies. It is for these reasons that we have continued to print the Directory rather than move it onto our website as we have done with many other publications.

The Directoryis not a “year book” nor, since it is published each fall, a reflection of a year gone by. Rather, it anticipates a year to come and, significantly your future lives as |. House alumni and world citizens. We hope that you will find it useful throughout your residency to help knit our global community together, and that in the coming years, as you peruse its pages, you will remember with fondness your experience here, and be encouraged to contact an old friend or acquaintance, as well as support the House. Lifelong friendships and cross cultural interaction are at the heart of the |. House community experience, and this visual record —a “snapshot” of our community in 2009-10— forever preserves a time and place in our lives.

Midway through the year, an addendum will be published containing photos and information about resident members who arrive mid-term. In the back of the Directory you'll find printed the pledge, which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of each academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of resident members from this unique community experience into your roles as global citizens. In the years to come, hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing your International House experience and its mission in your daily lives.

Sincerely yours,

The 2009-10 academic year at International House marks an important milestone in the House’s history, as it marks the LOOth anniversary of a seemingly inauspicious event which led to Its founding 85 years ago. That event was recalled by I-House originator Harry Edmonds, then secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M.C.A., in his memoirs:

International House was opened in September 1924, but it really had its beginning in the autumn of 1909. One frosty morning | was going up the steps in front of the Columbia Library, when | met a Chinese student coming down. | said “Good Morning.” As | passed on, | noticed out of the corner of my eye that he had stopped. So, | stopped, and went back to him. He said “Thank you for speaking to me; | have been in New York three weeks, and you are the first person who has spoken to me!”

“Well,” | said, by way of apology, “you know New York is a big place and people dont ordinarily speak unless they know you. ”

After we had exchanged names, |asked him what and where he was studying. He told me, thanked me again, and we separated.

| went on about my errand, but had no sooner gotten around back of the Library than /realized that something extraordinary had happened. Here was a fellow who had come from the other side of the world — China, to study in America; he had been in New York three weeks and no one had spoken to him! What a tragedy!

!retraced my steps to see if|could find him, and perhaps be of some service, but he had vanished in the crowd. That evening when | went home | told my wife of my experience. She said “can’t we do something about it?”

The Edmondses began inviting foreign students to their home for simple suppers of sandwiches and coffee. These gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the | first in a series of Sunday Suppers was held in Earl Hall at Columbia University. The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. Held four times during the academic year, the all-House suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good will among the 700 residents from 100 different countries. To mark this “Centennial of Welcomes” |-House alumni around the world have planned celebrations for this anniversary, from New York to Singapore, San Francisco to Hamburg, Boston to Florence, through the 2009-2010 academic year.

RESIDENT MEMBER GIFT CAMPAIGN

DateMarysg.tereeiy

ifrhe,muse,NYC$¢LOYet - Nd Four unde?

The

he Resident Members Gift Campaign (RMGC) is a vehicle through which residents provide financial support for a scholarship, program or project that they select by democratic vote. The campaign is an opportunity for current residents to help shape the |. House community and to leave a legacy for all future members.

In its fifth year, the Resident Member Gift Campaign, led by now alumnae Shirin Eskandani ’09 and Christina Renckens ’09 along with Bogdan Dulu, raised $10,504 including $5,000 in challenge grants from |. House Trustees Adrian Looney ’92, Mary Miller ‘66, Anthony Spikes 96 and Ross Youngman ’91, to establish a Study Center fund. This fund will be used to make improvements to the Center such as more comfortable, reconfigured seating, better lighting and additional basic office supplies such as a 3-hole punch, stapler, etc. The fund will be used, beginning as early as academic year 2009-10, until a zero balance is reached, meaning that it will not be endowed and once the money is spent, itwill not be replenished.

Three hundred and sixty-six residents (52% of the House) and scores of friends, alumni and staff participated in the Campaign, donating gifts ranging from $1 to $500 with many more participating in fundraising events like the annual garage sale.

The Resident Member Gift Campaign, like Sunday Suppers and the All Nations Celebration, is an |. House tradition which is sure to endure and will benefit all future generations of |. House residents.

If you would like to get involved with the 2009-2010 Resident Member Gift Campaign, please contact Director of Alumni Programs Nicole Davidson at ext. 8425 or ndavidson@ ihouse-nyc.org or visit us online at Attp://residents. ihouse-nyc.org/ RMGCHome.

International House greatly appreciates and proudly recognizes the hundreds of residents and other donors who generously supported the 2008-2009 Resident Member Gift Campaign. To viewa list of contributors, please visit www./house-nyc.org/honorroll.

THE ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN

he International House Annual Fund Campaign is supported by the contributions of the network of alumni and friends comprising this unique community. The health of the House and its residents is buttressed by the support of these dedicated individuals, corporations and foundations. Contributions to the Annual Fund enable the House to subsidize the expenses of every resident member by about $2,500 and to provide $400,000 in scholarship and fellowship aid annually.

Contributions to the Annual Fund Campaign are made in as diverse forms, intents, and denominations as our alumni and residents’ backgrounds. While some donors’ gifts support particular scholarship funds or program areas, others contribute to offset the general costs of operations. And while some contribute cash, some make gifts of securities, and others establish planned gifts to support International House in perpetuity.

In addition to subsidizing the residents’ expenses and providing scholarship and fellowship aid, donations to International House also support:

e Internet access in resident rooms and e Events organized to celebrate the wireless internet service on the C Level diverse cultures comprising the in the Map Lounge, Study Center, HR International House communityCommons, and the Pub;

Cultural Hours, Salon Nights, and International Festivals;

• The Fourannual Sunday Suppers which over the past 80 years have served to unite the International House communityin the spirit ofbrotherhood;

• Speakers' Forums providing the opportunity for a lively interchange between resident members and such distinguished visitors as

IINelson Mandela, Colin Powell and Madeline Albright;

• Specializedtrainingsessionsfor participants in the International Leadership Program, Program Fellows, and Resident Fellows;

• Community outreach programs, such as the ongoing International House

Tutorial Program that pairs resident members with local schoolchildren for tutoring and mentoring, including educational field trips and other learning experiences;

e A series of day trips and community weekends for residents and to get to know one another, as well as New York City and the surrounding areas.

Whatever their area of interest or means of support, all those who contribute and donate to the International House are united by their strong belief in the value of the International House experience and its capacity to inspire cooperation, understanding and, peace despite diversity.

The Annual Fund supports activities such as Community Weekends, Cultural Nights, Salon Nights and many other programs held throughout the year
