T he mission of International House

T is to enable selected graduate students and interns from countries around the world to live and learn together in a challenging and supportive residential community that builds lifelong qualities of leadership, tolerance, respect and friendship among individuals of all nations and backgrounds. An independent, non-profit organization, I. House achieves its mission by daily interaction among its residents and other members through programs, facilities and residential life designed to foster diversity of thought and experience, and to prepare our residents to meet the challenge of an interdependent world.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Resident Member:

It is my fervent hope that you enjoy this /nternational House Directory! \n addition to serving as a handy reference for our large and diverse community, it describes our mission or purpose, our 82-year history, our profile, our distinguished Board of Trustees, our World Council of Alumni and the endowed scholarship funds that are provided by supporters of the House to help resident members and achieve greater diversity. Perhaps most importantly, it is a keepsake of your participation in our |. House community. We know that former resident members save their Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their community life and prompting memories when contacting old friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni members for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of “whatever happened to...?” and “do you remember when...?” often refer to the directories provided when was a resident member at |. House during my graduate studies.

The Directory is not a “year book” nor, since it is published each fall, a reflection of a year gone by. Rather, it anticipates a year to come and, significantly your future lives as |. House alumni and world citizens. We hope that you will find it useful throughout your residency to help knit our global community together, and that in the coming years, aS you peruse its pages, you will remember with fondness your experience here, and be encouraged to oye Ganke Weho contact an old friend or acquaintance, as well as support with Herman “HR” Rottenberg. | the House. Lifelong friendships and cross-cultural interaction are at the heart of the |. House community experience, and this visual record —a “snapshot” of our community in 2006-O7— forever preserves a time and place in our lives.

Midway through the year, an addendum will be published containing photos and information about resident members who arrive mid-term. In the back of the Directory you'll find printed the pledge, which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of each academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of resident members from this unique community experience into your roles as global citizens. In the years to come, hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing your International House experience and its mission in your daily lives.

Sincerely yours,

HISTORY

On a frosty autumn morning early in 1909, Harry Edmonds (pictured at left), secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M. CA. w s walking up the steps of the Columbia aver “libre ry when he passed a Chinese student coming down. Edmonds said“Good morning,’ "and continued walking until he noticed out of the corner of his eye that the young man had stopped. “Thank you for speaking to me,” he said. “I have been in New York for three weeks and you are the first person who has spoken to me.”

Deeply affected by this encounter, Edmonds and his wife, Florence invited a group of foreign students to their country home for simple suppers of sandwiches and coffee. These gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the Edmondses held the first series of Sunday Suppers in Earl Hall at Columbia University.

The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. Held four times during the academic year, the all-house suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good will among the 700 residents from nearly 100 countries.

RESIDENT & PROGRAM FELLOWS 2006-07

he Office of Programs & Resident Life works closely with resident members serving the community as Resident and Peer Counselor Fellows and Program Fellows to provide programmatic activities and support services in support of the mission of the House. Each year Program Fellows plan and implement the activities featured on the monthly calendar. They rely on volunteers from the community and may ask you to share your talents and ideas. The Resident Fellows and Peer Counselor Fellows, along with the Resident Social Worker, encourage and facilitate resident members to make new friends and develop support networks within the House. Resident Fellows, assigned to each floor, create a sense of community on individual floors.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

he admissions season for the 2006-2007 academic year marked the beginning of an exciting new endeavor for International House: the International House Ambassador Program. The idea was spawned in order to give admitted applicants the opportunity to learn about the community from the points of view of |. House Alumni who have generously volunteered their time to become “Ambassadors”. The Ambassadors provide information about their own unique experiences at |. House, which is information these prospective resident members cannot obtain through simply reading the |. House website and brochures.

Admitted applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in the Program upon their admission to International House. As of August 1, 2006, dozens of applicants submitted their questions about life at International House to the Ambassadors, with the Ambassadors enthusiastically providing quick and honest answers. As a result, an overwhelming number of participants decided to join the community in 2006-2007.

Questions asked include, “With the community at House consisting of so many members from different nationalities, does the community tend to form groups of the same nationality or is there an effort to stay as homogeneous as possible?”; “| have heard a lot about House and its goals of building leadership in its members. Has this effort by House helped you specifically in your academic or professional life to gain better opportunities that would have been outside your reach otherwise?” and “Did your experience at International House give you a new perspective in looking at problems? How did this experience support your personal development?”

Much like our current |. House community, the Ambassadors represent a diverse crosssection of |. House’s 65,000+ alumni. The Ambassadors are lawyers, musicians, educators, engineers, journalists, businesspeople, artists, scientists, architects, diplomats, social workers, and professors. They were resident members as recently as 2006, and as long ago as 1960. They are citizens of countries on each continent and attended a wide variety of institutions during their resident membership. Living in this “global community” bestowed upon these alumni a high level of understanding of different cultures and communities around the world and a fondness for |. House, which motivates them to give back to |. House by describing their experiences to admitted applicants.

The |. House Ambassador Program will continue throughout the 2006-2007 academic year, when the Admissions Office is still receiving many applications for the remainder of the year. The Assistant Director of Development for Alumni Relations will continue to recruit alumni volunteers for the Program. The Program is expected to continue to grow, including inviting current resident members to be Ambassadors, and we look forward to making the Program bigger and better in the future!

Via “the world wide web”, “Ambassadors” answer questions from newly admitted applicants. They do not answer logistical questions meant for administration but rather describe what it is like to live at the House- giving them a flavor of the |. House community. Some typical questions and abbreviated answers are illustrated below.

RESIDENT MEMBER GIFT CAMPAIGN

he Resident Member Gift Campaign is a vehicle through which residents provide financial support for a scholarship, program or project that they select by democratic vote. The Gift Campaign isan opportunity forthe current residents to help shape the |. House community and to leave a legacy for allfuture members.

In its third year, the Resident Member Gift Campaign, led by now alumnae Camilla Nas ‘06, Alex Pang '06 and Lynne Saito '06, raised $10,365, including $5,000 in challenge grants from Trustees Adrian Looney 92, Adam Quinton and Robert van Zwieten '87 to endowa recreation fund. The income off of the invested recreation fund will be used to purchase items related to games and entertainment. The foosball table in the pub lounge was the first gift purchased through the fund. 286 residents and scores of friends, alumni and staff participated in the Campaign, donating gifts ranging from $.50 to $150 with many more participating in fundraising events like garage sales and a bike auction.

The Resident Member Gift Campaign, like Sunday Suppers and the All Nations Celebration, is an |. House tradition which is sure to endure and will benefit all future generations of |. House residents.

If you would like to get involved with the 2006-2007 Resident Member Gift Campaign, please contact Nicole Davidson at ext. 8425 or ndavidson@ihouse-nyc.org.

With sincere appreciation for their generous support of the 2005-2006 Resident Member Gift Campaign, International House is proud to recognize the following residents, staff, alumni and friends whose gifts helped raise $10,365 for the 20052006 Resident Members Recreation Fund.

THE ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN

he wide variety of programs, services and resources available to |. House resident members are made possible each year by generous alumni and friends who contribute to the Annual Fund Campaign. The life of the House—as well as the lives of all those who participate in this unique community—would be dramatically different were it not for the support of these dedicated individuals, corporations and foundations. In fact, contributions to the Annual Fund enable the House to subsidize the expenses of every resident member by approximately $2,500 a year and provide $400,000 in scholarship and fellowship aid to new and returning residents. Donations to |. House also support:

e Events such as Cultural Hours, leadership programs as well as Holiday Balls, Salon Nights and for residents serving as Program International Festivals organized Fellows and Resident Fellows; to celebrate the many diverse e Outreach efforts like the Internacultures of resident members; tional House Tutorial Program,

e Four annual Sunday Suppers that which pairs resident members with bring the |. House community local schoolchildren for mentoring, together in the spirit of brother- educational field trips and other hood—a House tradition for over learning experiences; 80 years;

e A series of day trips and

e Speakers’ Forums featuring such Community Weekends for residistinguished visitors as Nelson dents to get to know one anothMandela and Madeleine Albright er—as well as New York City and participating in lively discussions the surrounding areas—in inforon salient topics with resident mal, fun settings; members;

e Internet access in resident rooms

e Specialized training for participants and wireless Internet service in the in the House’s international Map Lounge and Study Center.

The range of contributions to the Annual Fund Campaign is as diverse as our alumni and residents’ backgrounds. NAMED AND ENDOWED FUNDS

A variety of need-based scholarships and merit-based fellowships are available to resident members each year, as are special outreach grants that are used to attract prospective residents from geographically, culturally or academically under-represented areas. Several committees drawn from the Admissions and Programs Offices and volunteer advisory panels meet several times a year to award grants to applicants who have demonstrated financial need as well as those who have requested leadership positions within the |. House community as resident or program fellows.

Many of the educational and cultural programs the House offers are supported by named and endowed funds as well. A complete list of all of the funds that will have a direct impact on the |. House community during the 2006-2007 academic year follows. International House is sincerely grateful to each of the donors who established funds over the years, providing a source of financial continuity that enables the House to achieve diverse representation within the community and address changing needs as they arise.

The Arab Cultural Fund was established in 1986 by the Suliman S. Olayan Foundation to provide support for Arab Cultural Programs at

International House. The Olayan Group of Companies, of which Mr. Olayan is founder and chairman, oversees a vast array of interests in the Middle East, including industrial, agricultural and construction equipment; communications and electronics gear; medical supplies; real estate investments; and an extensive insurance operation.

The Art Program Fund was established in 1984 through a contribution from former |. House Trustee Barbara Duncan and a matching contribution from the Phelps Dodge Corporation. Mrs. Duncan, an art curator and consultant specializing in contemporary Latin American painting, served as a trustee of the Americas Society and as a member of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art. The fund is used to provide support for art programs at International House.

The Cuneo Fund was established in 1974 through a gift by Donald L. Cuneo, former partner with the law firm of Shearman & Sterling. Mr. Cuneo has served as President of International House since September of 1993. Mr. Cuneo was a resident at International House from 1966 to 1969, and a Resident Advisor from 1972 to 1974. This fund is designated for support of general program activities. The International Visitor Program Fund was established in 1985 by the Board of Trustees of International House to launch a program that would recognize the contributions of an individual from a country other than the United States. In so doing, the Board reaffirmed the importance of the Marshall Visitor Program, which honors outstanding Americans, and acknowledged the necessity of a parallel program to recognize the significant contributions which people of all nationalities make to the common welfare of humankind. Under this program, which alternates with the Marshall Visitor Program, the Board of Trustees invites distinguished International Visitors to meet with students at International House. This fund provides support for this program.

The George C. Marshall Visitor Program Endowment Fund was endowed in 1959 after the Board of Trustees voted to establish the program as a tribute to the late General George Catlett Marshall. General Marshall had served as Chairman of the Board of International House from 1949 to 1953, and as Honorary Chairman until his death in 1959. The Program brings a distinguished American to visit the House to meet with students and
