PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Resident Member:
hope that you enjoy this International House Directory. In addition to serving as a handy reference for our large and diverse community, itdescribes our mission, our history, our profile, our distinguished Board of Trustees, our World Council of Alumni and our endowed scholarship funds provided by supporters of the House to help resident members and achieve diversity. Perhaps most importantly, it is keepsake of your participation in the |. House community. We have learned that former residents save their | Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their residency and prompting memories when contacting old friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of “whatever happened to...?” and “do you remember when...?” often referto the ones produced when was a resident member during my graduate studies.
The Directory is not a “year book” nor, since it is published each fall, a reflection of a year gone by. Rather it anticipates a year to come and, significantly your future lives as |. House alumni and world citizens. We hope that you will find it useful throughout your residency to help knit our global community together, and that in the coming years, aS you peruse its pages, you will remember with fondness your t h db Don Cuneo then and now. Top: Don during his Slaynere,an€encouragedtocontactanoldresidentmembership.Bottom:Don,asPresident, friend or acquaintance as well as support the — “lking with resident members. House. Lifelong friendships and cross cultural interaction are at the heart of the |. House experience, and this visual record —a “snapshot” of our community in 2003— forever preserves a time and place in our lives.
Midway through the year, an addendum will be published containing photos and information about resident members who arrive mid-term. In the back of the Directory you'll find printed the pledge, which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of each academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of resident members from this unique community experience into your roles as citizens. In the years to come, hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing the International House experience and mission in your daily lives.
Sincerely yours

HISTORY
On a frosty autumn morning: early in 1909, Harry Edmonds (pictured at left), secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M.C.A., was walking up the steps of the Columbia University library when he passed a Chinese student coming down. Edmonds said.
“Good morning,” and continued walking until he noticed out of the corner of his eye that the young man had stopped. “Thank you for speaking to me,” he said. “I have been in New York for three weeks —— and you are the first person who has spoken to me.”
ees ETI EEC
Deeply affected by this encounter, Edmonds and his wife, Florence invited a group of foreign students to their country home for simple Suppers Of sandwiches and coffee. These gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the Edmondses held the first series of unday Suppers in Earl Hall at Columbia University. The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. Held four times during the academic year, the all-house suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good will among the 700 residents from nearly 100 countries.

RESIDENT & PROGRAM FELLOWS 2003-04
he Office of Programs & Resident Life works closely with resident members serving the community as Resident and Peer Counselor Fellows and Program Fellows to provide progammatic activities and support services in support of the mission of the House. Each year 25 Program Fellows plan and implement the activities featured on the monthly calendar. They rely on volunteers from the community and may ask you to share your talents and ideas. The 21 Resident Fellows and 3 Peer Counselor Fellows, along with the Resident Social Worker, encourage and facilitate resident members to make new friends and develop support networks within the House. Resident Fellows, assigned to each floor, create a sense of community on individual floors.
Resident and Program Fellows build their leadership skills at Leadership Weekend, September 2003.

As well, the ocean cleans the sand so that each new individual will not simply follow her path, but make his or her own way on to the beach. The man thought about this answer. He liked what she said, but added that he thought the sand dunes represented his past because if he stood on top of them,

he could see further to the horizon. The woman nodded in agreement. They took comfort in each other’s answers.
As for the stretch of beach on which they currently stood, the woman explained that she believed this beach symbolized her present. Each new step is hers to take. The music and the languages spoke loudest to her on this beach, she told him. The man stopped and indeed he could hear the music playing and the languages being spoken. He enjoyed the music for a bit, but then said to his friend that this beach is calm and peaceful and would be the perfect place for him to study. The ocean is vast and mysterious, he said, and will give me a lot to think about. The man added, while contemplate the mysteries of life, can meet others, both alike and different from myself. They will help me gain knowledge. The woman agreed that he will indeed meet new people as she has since stepping on to the beach. The two took comfort in each other’s answers.
The man looked toward the lighthouse. He turned to his guide and asked how long the beach stretched, for he could see the lighthouse, but the beach seemed to fade away. She nodded. The lighthouse, she told him, represents her future. The only way to reach it is by walking along this beach. There, she said, the music hear will come from my heart. Itwill be a part of me. The man was intrigued. How long is the journey to the lighthouse, he inquired? The journey is yours to make, she believed; some people reach it in a few months, others may take years. But, she insisted, everyone gets there. When reach the lighthouse, he said, the knowledge gain along this beach will turn to wisdom. We will carry our music and insight with us forever. The friends took comfort in each other’s answers.
The man turned once more at his past and the fading footprints in the sand and the dunes along the beach. He smiled at the thought of how his past had gotten him to this point. He then looked at the present and out into ocean before him. He grew excited thinking of what his new friend had helped him realize. He could hear the music and the languages, he felt his knowledge growing and he began to understand. He then turned, took his friend’s hand, and walked toward the lighthouse leaving his footprints in the sand.
After awhile, he felt his friend’s hand slip away from his. He looked at her as she quietly moved to different section of the beach. He did not lament the loss of her touch because he felt her close in his heart. The man was walking toward the lighthouse when a hand slipped into his. Thinking his friend had returned he continued to look forward. A voice he did not recognize then spoke to him. He looked to see a different woman holding his hand. She looked into his eyes and said that she just arrived at this beach and wondered ifhe had been here before. He smiled and led her toward the lighthouse.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
nternational House is fortunate to be governed by a Board of Trustees, whose members serve on a purely voluntary basis and devote considerable time and resources to the House and its resident members. The Trustees provide leadership and guidance in shaping policies aimed at meeting the long-term goals and mission of the House. Their expertise and influence is felt in all aspects of the community: setting financial policy, fund raising for improvements and scholarships, overseeing the upkeep of the facilities, and initiating and supporting programs and activities. Their level of participation and commitment is extraordinary.

WORLD COUNCIL OF ALUMNI
stablished in 1966 by L.W. “Bill” Frolich, the World Council of Alumni is International House’s body of alumni representatives from all geographic regions of the globe.
The council seeks to further the House’s goals around the world, to retain contact with | its global alumni body, and to promote it among potential residents, friends and sup- i porters. During the meetings of the Council, held on an alternating basis each 18 months between New York and sites around the world, the Council receives updates on House activities, advises the President on future directions, and develops plans by which it can further the House’s mission.

THE ANNUAL FUND
he House relies upon the Annual Fund and its endowment earnings to make up this deficit every year, subsidizing each resident by $2,500 on average per year. It Is a common misconception that resident members’ fees more than cover International House’s operating expenses. Actually, the opposite is true. In Fiscal Year 2001 resident member fees were not sufficient to cover our budget of almost $10.7 million. Without the generosity of the following corporations, foundations and individual donors, we would not be able to:
e provide more than $310,000 in scholarships last year
e present more than 10 Cultural Hours, 4 holiday balls, 4 formal dinners for the entire House, 4 Community Weekends outside New York City for the residents to become acquainted with one another
e provide specialized international leadership training to more than 80 residents
e host 10 high-profile distinguished speakers to the House
e mentor 50 schoolchildren through the Harlem Tutorial Program
e lead more than 30 trips within New York City and surrounding areas
e organize more than 10 Resident Roundtable discussions on salient current events
e support residents’ arts and literary performances through “Salon Nights” and Special events
e host 10 social events
e convene more than 75 special-interest meetings for various groups in the House community
e carry out two international food, film and performance festivals attended by upwards of 600 visitors
e subsidize dining operations and telephone services
e provide wireless Internet service in Map Lounge and Study Center
e renovate the Pub
¢ provide a new boiler and related equipment
e refurbish International House North kitchens and bathrooms and plan future renovations
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS FISCAL YEAR 2003
onors to the House are able to give to the Annual Fund in numerous ways: cash or securities, scholarship donations, participation in special events, naming opportunities, and planned giving (bequests, charitable gift annuities, pooled income fund). More than just funding vehicles, these are different ways for our donors to invest in the International House global family, to affirm the power of letters to combat cultural and intellectual myopia and to support higher education across borders.
This past fiscal year was the final year of the 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign, to which many of the following donors also contributed. The Campaign, officially launched May of 2000, successfully met and exceeded its goal of $21.5 million by December 31st, 2002. Resident members donated $2,000, and helped work two Phonathons that raised an additional $50,000. The House was able to sustain giving to the Annual Fund during this five-year Capital Campaign due to the generosity of the following donors. It is with the deepest gratitude that International House recognizes them:

NAMED AND ENDOWED FUNDS
ach year, Annual Fund contributions are combined with investment income generated by International House’s Named and Endowed Funds to provide over 10 percent of the House’s annual budget. The generous alumni, Trustees, friends, Staff, corporations and foundations who have established these special funds provide an important source of income for the programs and financial aid offered at International House.
Funds that provide financial assistance to residents may support either monthly stipends for residents who receive fellowships, or direct grants to cover resident fees. The House’s Admissions Committee reviews financial assistance applications and awards grants based upon an evaluation of individual need. This committee also makes recommendations for special “outreach” grants to attract potential residents from geographical, cultural, or academically under-represented areas.
Funds that support the House’s program activities may finance either ongoing activities or innovative new projects. These program enrichment funds may also support the team of resident/program fellows and position holders who assist in the operation of the House, and in organizing programs for resident and non-resident members.
For their role as a source offinancial continuity that allows us to address changing needs while retaining diverse representation within the International House community, we are pleased to recognize the following:

House Trustee Barbara Duncan and a matching contribution from the Phelps Dodge Corporation. Mrs. Duncan, an art curator and consultant specializing in contemporary Latin American painting, has served as a trustee of the Americas Society and as a member of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art. The fund is used to provide support for art programs at International House.
The Gigi Michelle Asouline Memorial Fund was established in 2002 by International House alumna Natalie Asouline in the memory of her daughter. This fund is used to provide financial assistance to graduate students in residence at International House whose field of study is health or related studies, with preference given to residents from Sub-Saharan Africa or Israel.
The Barbara Chapin Babbott Award is given every year to an outstanding staff member of International House. Barbara Babbott was an active resident in the 1950’s, who later became a staff member, and this award is made in memory of her dynamic spirit and generosity. International House’s Mural Room is dedicated in her memory.
The Gerald Barsdorf Memorial Fund was established in 1986 and is used each year to provide a partial stipend for a resident to assist in the House’s alumni efforts and to further communication between alumni and International House. Born in Germany, educated in Argentina and the United States, widely-traveled and fluent in six languages, Gerald Barsdorf was truly a citizen of the world. He became a Trustee of International House in 1975 and served as Chairman of several Board Committees prior to his death in 1986. He believed deeply that former residents should keep in close contact with each other and with the House, so that they might carry the important message of International House abroad.
The Bertelsmann AG Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 by Bertelsmann AG in addition to its named room gift. Bertelsmann AG, a German-based communications company, oversees such operations as the Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, the Arista and RCA record labels, as well as other publishing, printing, and electronic media concerns. This fund may be used to provide financial assistance to residents at the discretion of International House, depending on particular needs each year.
The Ralph Bunche - Lee Fund was established through the efforts of International House alumnus Dr. Thomas Gardner. Originally known as the Robert E. Lee Scholarship, this fund was later augmented and dedicated in memory of Ralph J. Bunche, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, and member of the International House Board of Trustees. Stipends and direct grants for minority U.S. residents are currently made from this fund.
The Stephen Clark Fund was established in 1960 with a bequest from the Estate of Stephen Carlton Clark, art collector, benefactor and President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The son of Alfred Corning Clark, a founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Stephen C. Clark was a director of the Singer Manufacturing Company, and founded the Clark Foundation to further his philanthropies. Mr. Clark was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Modern Art from 1939 to 1946, and was also a director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This fund may be used to support scholarships and stipends at the discretion of International House, depending on particular needs each year.

The Howard A. Cook Fund was established in 1995 by alumni and friends to honor President Emeritus Howard A. Cook on the 40th Anniversary of his association with International House. Mr. Cook served as President of International House for twenty-five years from 1955 through 1979. In recognition of his extensive travels on behalf of the House, this fund is designated to provide outreach grants to bring residents from under-represented countries to live at International House.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE ALUMNI
pon leaving International House, you will join more than 70,000 remarkable men and women in over 145 countries who have learned from their own experiences here and have carried the spirit of international understanding with them throughout their lives. We hope you will stay in touch with |. House and your fellow alumni.
The Development & Alumni Relations Office offers several ways to help keep you connected. The Alumni Online Community enables alumni to locate and contact former |. House friends through the use of the online Directory and other online services. The World Newsletter, published twice a year, will keep you informed of |. House programs and alumni activities. Alumni who remain in the New York Area may also become Alumni Members of the House for a minimal contribution. Alumni Members may use the House’s facilities and participate in many of the programs offered to our resident members. There is also a strong alumni chapter in New York City, the New York Area Alumni Council (NYAAC), which hosts social and networking events
2 throughout the year.
Two residents share the spirit of International House.
International House, in part through its local and regional alumni chapters, also offers opportunities for alumni around the world to help further our mission with activities to raise scholarship funds, recruit new residents, and network with other alumni.
For information about Alumni Membership or to inform us of a change of address please contact:

CANDLELIGHT PLEDGE
As light begets light, so friendship and goodwill are passed from one to another. We who have come from many nations to live in one fellowship at u International House promise one another — to pass the light wherever we
Two resident members pass the light of friendship to one another during the annual Candlelight Sunday Supper.
