Dear Resident:

Ihope thatyou willenjoy thisInternational House Directory. Inaddition toservingasahandy reference forourlarge and diverse community, itcontains descriptions ofendowed scholarships funds provided by supporters ofthe House tohelp residents and achieve diversity. Perhaps most importantly, itisakeepsake ofyour stay at I. House. We have learned that former residents save their Directory throughout theirlivesasaway ofrecallingtheirresidency and prompting memorieswhen contactingoldfriends. Inevitably, theyarebrought outatinformal gatherings ofalumni forlengthy and enjoyable sessions of“whatever happened to...?”

The Directory is not a “year book” nor, since it is published each fall, a reflectionofayeargone by.Rather itanticipates ayeartocome and, significantlyyour future lives asI.House alumni and world citizens. We hope thatyou willfind it usefulthroughout your staytohelp knitourcommunity together, andthatinthe coming years asyou peruse itspages you willremember with fondness your stay here, and be prompted to contact an old friend or acquaintance as well as supportthe House. Lifelong friendships areatthe heart ofthe I.House experience, andthisvisualrecord—a “snapshot” ofourcommunity in2002—forever preserves a time and a place in your lives.

Midway through theyear, anaddendum willbepublished containing photos and information about residents who arrive mid-term. In the back of the Directory, you'llfindprinted the pledge which isrecited atthe Candlelight Sunday Supper attheend oftheacademic year.Thismoving ceremony marks inanunforgettable way the passage of residents from this unique community experience into your roles as world citizens. In the years to come, Ihope that you will read these words again from time to time as away ofrenewing the International House experience inyour daily lives.

Sincerely yours,

na frosty autumn morning early in 1909, Harry Edmonds, secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M.C.A., was walking up the steps of the Columbia University library when he passed a Chinese student coming down. Edmonds said “Good morning,” and continued walking until he noticed out of the corner of his eye that the young man had stopped. “Thank you for speaking to me,” he said. “I have been in New York for three weeks and you are the first person who has spoken to me.”

Deeply affected by this encounter, Edmonds and his wife Florence invited a group of foreign students to their country home for simple suppers of sandwiches and coffee. These gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the Edmondses held the first series of Sunday Suppers in Earl Hall at Columbia University.

The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. Held four times during the academic year, the all-house suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good will among the 700 residents from nearly 100 countries.

Our Mission

The Mission of International House, New York is to enable selected graduate students and interns from countries around the world to live and learn together in a challenging and supportive residential community in New York City that builds lifelong qualities of leadership, tolerance, respect and friendship among individuals of all nations and backgrounds. This independent, non-profit organization achieves its mission by daily interaction among its residents and other members through programs, facilities and residential life designed to foster diversity of thought and experience and to prepare its residents as alumni to meet the challenges of an interdependent world.

THE ANNUAL FUND

[It is a common misconception that resident members’ fees more than cover InternationalHouse’soperatingexpenses. Actually, theoppositeistrue.InFiscal Year 2001, resident member fees were not sufficient to cover our budget of almost $10.7million. The House relies upon the Annual Fund and its endowment earnings tomake upthisdeficiteveryyear, subsidizing each resident by $2,500 on average per year.

[International House expenses include:

¢ programs and resident support services

e scholarships

e subsidies for telephone services (includinganew telephone system)

e subsidies for dining operations

° programs

e administration

e loan interest and depreciation

* capital improvements such as providing wireless Internet service in the Map Lounge and Study Center, renovation of the Pub. upgrading of the Bazaar, provision of a new boiler and related equipment, refurbishment of International House North kitchens and bathrooms, and other planned renovations.

Without the generosity of the following corporations, foundations and individual donors. we would not be able to:

e provide more than $310,000 in scholarships last year

e present more than 10 Cultural Hours, 4 holiday balls, 4 formal

dinners for the entire House, 4

community weekends outside New York City for the residents to become acquaintedwithoneanother

¢ provide specialized international leadership training to more than 80 residents

e host 10 high-profile distinguished speakers to the House

e mentor 50 schoolchildren through the Harlem Tutorial Program

e lead more than 30 trips within New York City and surrounding areas

¢ organize more than 10 Resident Roundtable discussions on salient current events

¢ support residents’artsandliterary performances through “Salon Nights”

e host 10 social events

® convene more than 75 specialinterest meetings for various groups in the House community

® carry out two international food, film and performance festivals attended by upwards of 600 visitors.

Donors to the House are able to give to the Annual Fund innumerous ways: cashor securities, scholarship donations, participation in special events, naming opportunities, and planned giving (bequests, charitable gift annuities, pooled income fund). More thanjust funding vehicles, thesearedifferentways forour donors to invest in the International House global family, to affirm the power of letters to combat cultural and intellectual myopia and to support higher education across borders.

It is with the deepest gratitude that International House recognizes the following donors to the Annual Fund:

NAMED AND ENDOWED FUNDS

Each year, Annual Fund contributions are combined with investment income generated by International House’s Named and Endowed Funds to provide over 10 percent of the House’s annual budget. The generous alumni, Trustees, friends, corporations and foundations who have established these special funds provide an important source of income for the programs and financial aid offered at International House.

Funds that provide financial assistance to residents may support either monthly stipends for residents who hold positions, or direct grants to cover resident fees. The House’s Admissions Committee reviews financial assistance applications and awards grants based upon an evaluation of individual need. This committee also makes recommendations for special “outreach” grants to attract potential residents from geographical, cultural, or academically under-represented areas.

Funds that support the House’s program activities may finance either ongoing activities or innovative new projects. These program enrichment funds may also support the team of resident/program assistants, house managers and other position holders who assist in the operation of the House, and in organizing programs for resident and non-resident members.

For their role as a source of financial continuity that allows us to address changing needs while retaining diverse representation within the International House community, we are pleased to recognize the following:

The Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Endowment Fund was established in 1984 by His Royal HighnessPrince Abdullah Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia to provide program assistant stipends to graduate students at the discretion of International House, depending on needs each year.

The Vivian Beaumont Allen Fund was established in 1963 in memory of noted philanthropist Vivian Beaumont Allen, heiress to the fortune of J. E. Beaumont, founder of the Mays department stores. The Vivian Beaumont Allen Fund is used for scholarships and stipends at the discretion of International House, depending on particular needs each year.

The Altajir Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by Ambassador Mehdi Altajir to provide scholarship assistance to graduate residents at International House.

The Arab Cultural Fund was established in 1986 by the Suliman S. Olayan Foundation to provide support for Arab Cultural Programs at International House. The Olayan Group of Companies, of which Mr. Olayan is founder and chairman, oversees a vast array of interests in the Middle East, including

industrial, agricultural and construction equipment; communications and electronics gear; medical supplies; real estate investments; and an extensive insurance operation.

The Arab Student Endowment Fund was established in 1976 by alumni Salim Ahmed Al-Moosa and Abdulla A. Almoosa, two World Council Members, and Khalaf Al-Habtoor, from the United Arab Emirates, to provide assistance to Arab residents of International House.

The Art Program Fund was established in 1984 through a contribution from International House Trustee Barbara Duncan and a matching contribution from the Phelps Dodge Corporation. Mrs. Duncan, an art curator and consultant specializing in contemporary Latin American painting, has served asa trustee of the Americas Society and as amember of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art. The fund is used to provide support for art programs at International House.

The Barbara Chapin Babbott Award is given every year to an outstanding staff member of International House. Barbara Babbott was an active

resident in the 1950’s, who later became a staff member, and this award is made in memory of her dynamic spirit and generosity. International House’s Mural Room is dedicated in her memory.
