INTERNATIONAL HOUSE RESIDENT DIRECTORY 1999-2000 A Global Community 500 Riverside Drive New York, NY 10027-3916 Phone: (212)316-8400 Fax: (212) 316-1827 E-Mail: admissions@ihouse-nyc.org Website: http://www.ihouse-nyc.org
Dear Resident:
This International House Resident Directory serves a number of purposes. It’s a handy reference for a large and diverse community, it contains descriptions of endowed scholarship funds provided by supporters of the House to help residents achieve diversity, and, perhaps most importantly, it is a keepsake of your stay at I. House. We have learned that former residents save their Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their residency and prompting memories when contacting old friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of “whatever happened to...?”
This Directory is not a “year book” nor, since it is published each fall, a reflection of a year gone by. Rather it anticipates a year to come and, significantly, your future lives as I. House alumni and world citizens. We hope that you will find it useful throughout your stay to help knit our community together, and that in the coming years as you peruse its pages you will remember with fondness your stay here, and be prompted to contact an old friend or acquaintance as well as support the House. Lifelong friendships are at the heart of the I. House experience, and this visual record—a “snap shot” of our community in 1999—forever preserves a time and a place in your lives.
Midway through the year, an addendum will be published containing photos and information about residents who arrive mid-term. In the back of the Directory, you'll find printed the pledge which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of the academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of residents from this unique community experience into your roles as world citizens. In the years to come, I hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing the International House experience in your daily lives.
Sincerely yours,
Donald L. Cuneo President
na frosty autumn morning early in 1909, Harry Edmonds, secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M.C.A., was walking up the steps of the Columbia University library when he passed a Chinese student coming down. Edmonds said “Good morning,” and continued walking until he noticed out of the corner of his eye that the young man had stopped. “Thank you for speaking to me,” he said. “I have been in New York for three weeks and you are the first person who has spoken to me.”
Deeply affected by this encounter, Edmonds and his wife Florence invited a group of foreign students to their country home for simple suppers of sandwiches and coffee. These gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the Edmondses held the first series of Sunday Suppers in Earl Hall at Columbia University.
The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. Held four times during the academic year, the all-house suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good will among the 700 residents from nearly 100 countries.
The Mission of International House, New York is to enable selected graduate students and interns from countries around the world to live and learn together in a challenging and supportive residential community in New York City that builds lifelong qualities of leadership, tolerance, respect and friendship among individuals of all nations and backgrounds. This independent, non-profit organization achieves its mission by daily interaction among its residents and other members through programs, facilities and residential life designed to foster diversity of thought and experience and to prepare its residents as alumni to meet the challenges of an interdependent world.

be L House community is celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the House in many ways throughout this academic year. The celebration kicked off on September 17, 1999 as residents, trustees, alumni and staff participated in programs throughout the day and evening honoring the history of the remarkable institution that 700 graduate students and interns from all over the world call home each year.
he day began with a ceremony in the Main Lounge attended DonaldL. Cuneo, WilliamD. Rueckert, AbbyM. O'Neill, Irene Halligan, Paul Volcker
by trustees, residents, alumni and staff followed by a luncheon in Davis Hall. Speakers included President Donald Cuneo, Chairman of the Board, Paul Volcker, and two trustees who are descendents of I. House's founders: Abby M. O'Neill, granddaughter of Jobn D. Rockefeller, Jr. and William Rueckert, grandson of Cleveland E. Dodge.
r. Volcker read letters from President Bill Clinton, former Presidents Gerald Ford and George Bush and New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani congratulating the House on the anniversary and wishing further success.
he ceremony also included the unveiling of two plaques honoring the placement of the building on both the State and National Registers of Historic Landmarks. The building, known today as I. House South, received this honor in “recognition of significance in American history and culture." In addition, Irene Halligan, Commissioner of the New York City Commission for the United Nations, Consular Corps and Protocol presented Mr. Volcker with the Mayoral Proclamation that Friday, September 17, 1999 was “International House Day" in the City of New York.
estivities continued into the evening with an Open House celebration for residents and alumni that included cultural demonstrations in the Main Lounge, historical films and videos about the House in the Dodge Room and musical performances by residents in the Hall of History. The evening culminated in Davis Hall with a performance by the MorganScott Ballet, a 75th Anniversary cake, a live jazz band and dancing into the night.

Council of World Members
Established in 1966 by L.W. “Bill” Frohlich, the Council of World Members is International House’s body of alumni representatives from all geographic regions of the globe. The Council seeks to further the House’s goals around the world, to retain contact with its global alumni body, and to promote it among potential residents, friends and supporters. During meetings of the Council, held on an alternating basis each 18 months between New York and sites around the world, the Council receives updates on House activities, advises the President on future directions, and develops plans by which it can further the House’s mission.

THE ANNUAL FUND
For seven decades private sector philanthropy has been central to International House's ability to fulfill its mission. The program activities which create the unique character of life at the House, and the financial assistance which ensures diversity within our community, are made possible through the generous support of numerous individuals, corporations and foundations. The Annual Fund surpassed its goal in FY 99. This year’s Annual Fund goal is $796,500.
For their voluntary financial support throughout this past year, we are deeply appreciative of the following corporations, foundations, alumni, friends and Trustees who have provided substantial support for the House.

NAMED AND ENDOWED FUNDS
Each year, Annual Fund contributions are combined with income generated by International House’s Named and Endowed Funds to provide over 10 percent of the House’s annual budget. Over the last 35 years a number of these special funds have been established to create an additional source of income for the programs and financial aid offered at International House.
Funds established to provide financial assistance to residents may be used to award either monthly stipends for residents who hold positions, or direct grants to partially cover resident fees. The size and nature of direct grants are based on an evaluation of individual need, and result from a review of financial assistance applications by the House’s Admissions Committee. This committee also makes recommendations that special “outreach” grants be awarded to attract potential residents from geographical, cultural, or academically under-represented areas.
Funds which support the House’s program activities may be used to finance either ongoing activities or innovative new projects. These program enrichment funds may also be used to support the team of resident/program assistants, house managers and other position holders who assist in the operation of the House, and in organizing programs for resident and non-resident members.
For their role as a source of financial continuity which allows us to address changing needs while retaining diverse representation within the International House community, we are pleased to recognize the following:
The Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Endowment Fund was established in 1984 by His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia to provide program assistant stipends to graduate students at the discretion of International House, depending on needs each year.
The Vivian Beaumont Allen Fund was established in 1963 in memory of noted philanthropist Vivian Beaumont Allen, heiress to the fortune of J. E. Beaumont, founder of the Mays department stores. The Vivian Beaumont Allen Fund is used for scholarships and stipends at the discretion of International House, depending on particular needs each year.
The Altajir Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by Ambassador Mehdi Altajir to provide scholarship assistance to graduate residents at International House.

Candlelight Pledge
As light begets light, so friendship and goodwill are passed from one to another. We who have come from many nations to live in one fellowship at International House promise one another to pass the light wherever we go.
International House Alumni
Upon leaving International House, you will join more than 70,000 remarkable men and women in over 145 countries who have learned from their own experiences here and have carried the spirit of international understanding with them throughout their lives. We hope you will stay in touch with I. House and fellow alumni who constitute a wonderful networking opportunity. Our Alumni On-Line Community enables alumni to communicate swiftly, post resumes, institute job searches, create homepages and establish permanent e-mail addresses, among other features. The World Newsletter, sent twice a year, will keep you informed of I. House programs and alumni activities. Our alumni who stay in the New York area become involved with I. House’s New York Area Alumni Council, NYAAC. NYAAC hosts social events throughout the year and provides a wonderful networking opportunity. Many New York alumni also become Alumni Members of the House. Alumni Members may use the House’s facilities and participate in many of the programs offered to our residents. International House also offers opportunities for alumni around the world to help further our mission with activities to raise scholarship funds, recruit new residents, and network with other alumni.
For information about Alumni Membership or to inform us of a change of address please contact:
