Portrait of International House

International House - we live here - and who are we?

We come from all corners of the globe - to study, of courseand they say the process of learning never ends. But, as we go along, we make our contributions, every day, every moment. We give a little, take a little; and we do this all the time, growing to greater understanding.

In the warm clima.te of our International House community, understanding of indi, riduals, which, of course, increases understanding of nations, becomes at. everyday experience. When we pack up to go to our corner of the eart.h, we carry this treasured year with us.

Were we lonely when we arrived in New York? Who wasn't? Soon a neighbor discovered tbat everyone felt just about the same, no matter where she or he came from. We need each other-and in this need, we understand our friends,. The machinery of I-House works smoothly with the help of the staff, who through their varied backgrounds and experience have helped to make our lives enjoyable, and to them we are very grateful.

This is the portrait of International House, lighting our way to appreciation of the be,tter spiritual and material things in life, under God, eo "that brotherhood may prevail." We hope this book will serve as a memento of our pleasant year here.

INTERNATIONAL HOUS ASSOCl.id'lON

In 1937, a group of former members of the New York International Rouse in Berlin decided to get together a:od observe "lnterna-. tionaJ. House Day" on November 10th. Simultaneously, groups in New York City and other places celebrated. Alwnni agreed that the segment of their lives 'Which was spent in International House was far too important to be forgotten and, through an International House alumni association, they felt that they could still put into practice the policy of 11Hands Across tbe sea."

It was not long before the Berkeley and Chicago International Houses followed suit. The first issue of the Interrw-tional House Quarterly -was published in 1937, the three Houses thus being brought into a closer union as the editorial board comprised members of the three Houses.

The International House Association was incorporated in New York City in 1947, formally uniting the alumni organizations of the three Houses into one body-, and records were set up in the Central Office including the names and addresses of some 50,000 form.er members -an impressive menbership potential. A compiete geographical file was compiled, so that at any given time, this office could supply lists of names and addresses to groups of people interested in seeing up local Chapters.

Two years ago, an agr-eement was reached 'Whereby for:mer members of the Philadelphia International House couJld joi:q the Association; ana one year a:go, it was agreed that aiumni of the Cite Universitaire in Paris could have dual membership in the Association and the Paris alumni association.

The first Orui.pters of the Association to receivr their charters were those connected with the three parent Houses. Hawaii became a Cb.lJ.pter shortly thereter; Italy, Mexico and the United Kingdom also formed Chapters in 1.948; eight lllore in 1949, and so on until the beginni.I\g of 1953, when there were 57 Chapters.

Herrick B. Young, who resigned as Executive Director last December to become President of Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, made a Round-the-World-Trip early in 1953, as a result of which nine Chapters were organized in the Near East and Asia. At the present time, there are 69 Chapters, 44 of them outside the continental United States.

In ad.dition to the Chapters, there are about 40 areas in llhich there are very small groups or correspondents who are willing to serve as contact persons for International House alwnni visiting their countries. November 10th is still observed as International House Day each year.

The International House Quarterly is sent to all paid mmbers and di-stributed t(1 all House residen'ts. Most of the contributors of articles and iJ:lustrations are alumni, and the subjects are of intellectual .interest with a special emphasis on cultural and educational processe,s, human relations, and the advancement of international underf!tanding throughout t.b,e world. Personal news of alumni is given, nd also coverage of activities of Chapters and groups. A newsletter is published from time to time in addition to the Quarterly.

The Central Office of the Association is located in the New York House, and is open from Monday to Friday (o a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Hause members interested in receiving nwnes of alwnni in their home community, and introductions to members in countries where they are planning to visit, will always be welcome.

House members ho did not join the Association before leaving are invited to write to "International House Association, Inc., 500 .Riverside Drive, New York 27, N.Y." at their convenience, and we will be glad to supply.01embership applications and other information by return mail.

The following is a list of correspondents of Association Chapters and groups (asterisks indicate Chapters):
