That Brotherhood
May Prevail

Fie successful establishment of International House, New York in 1924, led to the building of similar International Houses in other student centers. The first opened in Berkeley at the University of California in 1930.
International House, Chicago, was founded in 1932. The other American Houses are official units of the Universities at which they are located, while the New York House is an independent organization.
La Maison Internationale in Paris serves as the social and cultural center of the great Cité Universitaire. It dates from 1936, and, in common with the three Houses in the United States, was the gift of Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.

Notes and News

There is always a controversy on attendance at Sunday Supper. Does the crowd come for a free meal, or to listen to the program? For those who came for the latter, here is a list of those who spoke during the year.
Mr. FREDERICK OsporN, Member of the Board of Trustees, and authority on Population,—International House.
Mr. Epwarp C. Carter, Secretary-General of the Institute of Pacific Relations,—International House and the World Crisis.
Professor Roy MiTcHELL and the Consort SincERS, in a program of Foreign Folk Songs.
Mr. Maxweuy Stewart, Associate Editor, The Nation,—The Soviet Union.
Mr. Morris Ernst, Lawyer,—Civil Liberties.
Major Georce Fietpinc Exior, Author, “The Ramparts We Watch,’—The Military Situation in Europe.
Mr. Harpince ScHoLte, Director, Museum of the City of New York,—Old New York.
Mrs. Mary K. Smmxkuovitcu, Director, Greenwich House,—The Settlement House Movement.
ProFressor G. A. Borcese, Author, “Goliath, the March of Fascism”,—Becoming an American Citizen.
PRoFEssoR CLyDE EaGLeton, New York University,—American Foreign: Policy.
Mr. Victor D’Amico, Museum of Modern Art,—Trends in Modern Art.
Dr. Harry Gipeonse, Department of Economics, Columbia University,—Needs in Modern Education.
Mr. W. A. LypcatTe,—The Gallup Poll.
Dr. Foster KeNNeEpy, Professor of Neurology, New York Hospital,—Trends in Medical Education.
Mr. Rockwe.t Kent,—Art and Democracy.
Mr. James Myers, Labor Expert, Federal Council of Churches,—Labor Problems in the United States.
Mr. STERLING FisHER, Director, Department of Talks, Columbia Broadcasting System,—Problems in International Radio.
Mr. Brackett Lewis, Secretary, American Committee for Relief in Czecho-Slovakia,—Crisis in Central Europe.
Miss Emma EnpbrEs, Piano; Mr. WILLIAM GEPHART, Baritone.
HONORABLE JERRY Vooruis, Representative from California.
The final Sunday Supper of the year followed tradition in the Candle Ceremony, when the unity of all members of the House was symbolized in a simple ceremony.
The artistically inclined were very active during the year. In the fall Mr. Y. K. Chang of Shanghai, who resided at the House, exhibited an interesting selection of his Finger Paintings, in which he followed an ancient Chinese painting technique.
A group of artistic pathfinders mystified the House with an exhibition of Surrealist paintings, abstractions and symbolic riddles.
Through a happy suggestion of Miss Ellen Simon, the Gold Fish Bowl was transformed into an exhibition room where individual artists have shown their work. Exhibitors, as we go to press, have included Mr. Kenneth Hunt, who showed examples of textile work made in the Art Department of the Teachers College of Denton, Texas. Miss Joy Spearman exhibited a charming group of water

colors showing scenes of England, France, the Channel Islands and the United States. Mr. Richard Snow showed a group of wood-cuts and other black and white work. Others are touching up their pictures for the future.
The International Affairs Tray Supper met regularly for a lively series of talks and discussions. In the fall session, the main focus was on the Munich Agreement, and its effect on the major countries involved. The Social Problems Group organized a series on Race Problems. The Friday Morning Breakfast Club, a group of Education Students and other hardy folk, rose early for discussions and talks by well known educators and psychologists.
Language tables were the occasion for many instructive evenings for those interested in LatinAmerican and French culture. Talks, gramophone renderings of folk music, trips to Spanish and French restaurants and an increasing use of the Spanish and French languages themselves were salient features of these programs.
Musicians, too, were active; singers, strings, and the more persuasive instruments. At musicales and Sunday Supper, they have been a constant delight. Notable was a Sunday Supper performance devoted to the compositions of Mr. D. K. Lee of Hawaii, played and sung by House members. Few will forget Burl Ives and his jovial repertoire. Special mention must be made of Monday Evenings in the Home Room with Professor Mitchell and his Consort Singers.
The Alumni Association now numbers over 1600 members in over fifty countries, and keeps up contacts and the spirit of the House far afield. On November Tenth, the Annual Banquet was held, and greetings were received from friends from all parts of the world. All House members, past and present, can keep in touch with each other, exchange ideas, and retain the fellowship of the House in the Association, and in its journal, The International Quarterly. As the Alumni Association grows, the House grows...
